Ivory-billed Woodpeckers

In the short term, I'm content to try to work on the rest of the article (since the whole thing is a dumpster fire). It's possible with the rest of the article in place, the post '44 stuff won't seem to egregiously unbalanced (post '44 searches are the subjects of at least two books & a lot of popular media and stuff, so it's certainly worth a non-trivial amount of space.)

But regardless, at some point (certainly before a GA attempt), some sort of resolution that allows for the material in question to be re-written to be well suited to Wikipedia will need to take place. I'm at a bit of a loss on how/if that's possible (seriously, as far as I can determine, all the complaints I don't know the subject, make illogical changes, have a hidden agenda, etc. seem to stem from me writing "flap speed" rather than "flap rate", which, okay, was a bit sloppy, but is easily fixed and I've already stated multiple times I'm happy to do that), but at this point, it seems impossible to even try to discuss any content, or any way to find a resolution that can work for everyone. Since you're the only person who seems to be paying attention that hasn't earned any ire, I figured I'd reach out to you to see if you had a less involved view of how to move forward. For the next five days my free time is minimal and highly unpredictable (am busier than I expected!), which is annoying as I need to digest info and figure how to proceed. No worries, I don't think there's a hurry. Most of the egregious parts are now redone - a lot of it's now a disorganised information dump, but progress on that is going to be slower. There's a thorny issue where most sources just regurgitate Tanner's book, which is by far the best study - but it's unclear how much that study of six birds is really representative of the whole species - Cinclodes alludes to it, and it's true, and it's hard to figure out how to work around in a Wikipedia context. So I think progress on pretty much everything is going to be slow going anyhow. WilyD 08:39, 29 October 2019 (UTC)

I had a look at the article in The Birds of Africa - this is the equivalent of HANZAB or BWP for African birds. I was a bit disappointed - only three and a half pages and hardly any references - but still useful. - Aa77zz (talk) 15:00, 22 November 2019 (UTC)

Etymologies in plant articles

Please see User talk:TelosCricket#Proposed RfC where two of your featured articles are being critiqued for 'incorrect etymologies'. (Telopea oreades and Banksia sphaerocarpa). Unsure if your interest extends to this type of detail. I became aware because of a WP:AN3 report where people were disputing whether the etymologies in our plant articles were correct, and if they ought to be checked against Latin and Greek dictionaries. Or on the other hand, if such checking would count as original research. More background is at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Tree of Life/Archive 46#Problematic editing on etymologies. Right from the start it extols the virtues of the hot Tom and Jerry This hot Tom and Jerry is an old-time drink that is once used by one and all in this country to celebrate Christmas with, and in fact it is once so popular that many people think Christmas is invented only to furnish an excuse for hot Tom and Jerry, although of course this is by no means true. Page bloat

Cas, we have an important RFC ready for launch, after a month in development, with the MEDLEAD RFC also running now, and a talk page at MEDMOS that was 800KB yesterday. We really don't need another RFC right now, especially one that was not discussed in advance. Perhaps WhatamIdoing, who is an expert on RFCs (as everything else she is an expert on) will give you suggestions on the best way to proceed now. We've got to stop this !voting without discussing trend that plagues WPMED, where a conflict happens, a post to WT:MED is made, and everyone comes rushing in with factionalized !voting. Cas, now that WAID has gotten it under control, it might serve another useful purpose (even if WPMED has to wait a few months to get the real discussion about "how prescriptive the order is meant to be"). Your RFC could turn out to be a good teachable moment, with WAID involved and demonstrating an alternate path to the typical "I agree with editor-so-and-so" as a means of building consensus. I hope that consensus on article talk will allow you to install a logical narrative, but in my experience, consensus-building is something that WPMED needs to re-learn. Since I am likely to decide, again, that this is not the place I want to be, you know where to find me. I notice that you went to promote Prep 2 to Queue 2 right after you'd taken care of Prep 1, then reversed yourself because some work was still being done. I responded on Discord but you haven't been on, so I'm leaving this on your talk page. Take it with as many grains of salt as desired. ~

The comparisons in the lead to BG are off-putting. So is the clarification about the name of the system. Generally, the lead doesn't seem to do a good job summarizing.

The multiple paragraphs about the nomenclature at the beginning seem to me to be of low import to the generalist reader (me :). A table might be preferable, and/or movement to the latter etymology section.

General vocabulary seems appropriate for the class of article but I do see that it would be hard to parse for non-specialists. Links are provided where appropriate. (This is standard jargon problem on Wikipedia.) Conversely, the bit about the H alpha line gets into a sentence or two not pertinent to the article. (The history.)

Which companion star? Though, I'm not sure that sentence is exactly necessary in general, especially since it's like "well, there's another thing but we're not really sure about that other thing" which doesn't really help the reader...

I am writing to ask about your interesting comments at the Village Pump discussion on a new proposed workspace. Firstly, I am glad that you support the idea to add a new tab to Village Pump, for topics relating to "Projects."

However, I just wanted to get some details on your other suggestion, i.e. to merge the proposed page for "Town Hall" with the page for Community Portal. I don't really agree with this idea for one simple reason; even though I initiated the idea for the page "Town Hall," I don't think it has really caught on as of yet. so I don't think that merging it with another page would accomplish anything, since it doesn't currently have much of a following at all anyway. I noticed you brought back a remedy from years gone by. The "Probation". I was glad to see that. It's not just that I like Kudpung (although I do) - but rather I like to see more than just the "black and white" of desysop or not solutions to complex problems. Another one I remember from back in the day was the "Temporary Desysop" (usually 6, or 12 months if memory serves.) The project is dedicated to promoting articles on women to Good Article status. Currently only about 4% of GAs are about women, and very few core articles have reached GA status. New members and interest in this would be appreciated.
• Wikipedia:The Great Britain/Ireland Destubathon. The Great Britain/Ireland De-stub-athon is an edit-a-thon contest that aims to vastly decrease the number of stubs we have for the UK and Ireland. This focuses particularly on places and listed buildings, but the contest will include everything. It aims to eliminate as many of our 44,000-odd stubs as possible, and to see content improved for every single county of the UK and Ireland as evenly as possible. It covers all 48 counties of England (as well as the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man), 32 in Scotland, 32 in Ireland and N Ireland, and 22 of Wales, 134 counties in total. Wouldn't it be great to be able to browse a Google map of the UK and Ireland and to read a consistently good quality article for every village and monument you zoom in on? That's the primary goal we have in mind long term here!
• Wikipedia:WikiProject_Military_history/March_Madness_2020. March Madness is a backlog reduction drive, which will run from 00:01 UTC on 1 March through to 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2020. The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project; however, only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. This year the drive is focused on the following areas:
  • tagging article and non-article talk pages that fall within the project's scope, including adding articles to MILHIST task force
  • assessing articles that fall within the project's scope, including Good Article nominations
  • updating the open tasks template on Milhist task force pages (e.g. Template:WPMILHIST Announcements/Japanese military history)

I find the complaints lodged against Kudpung to be so weak that they're laughable. I also find your assessment of Kudpung's behavior unreasonable and your decision to remove his mop unmerited. While I have great respect for our admins that remain polite and unflappable in every circumstance, I think that attitude is neither required nor reasonable for all admins. While you may think that you protected this project by punishing Kudpung or preventing personal attacks, your actions today have only played into the hands of a certain clique of editors who took advantage of this opportunity to remove an obstacle to their plans. WikiCup 2020 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 57 contestants qualifying. We have abolished the groups this year, so to qualify for Round 3 you will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two contestants.

Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

• Epicgenius, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with a featured article, five good articles and an assortment of other submissions, specialising on buildings and locations in New York, for a total of 895 points.
• Gog the Mild came next with 464 points, from a featured article, two good articles and a number of reviews, the main theme being naval warfare.
• Raymie was in third place with 419 points, garnered from one good article and an impressive 34 DYKs on radio and TV stations in the United States.
• Harrias came next at 414, with a featured article and three good articles, an English civil war battle specialist.
• CaptainEek was in fifth place with 405 points, mostly garnered from bringing Cactus wren to featured article status.
• The top ten contestants at the end of Round 1 all scored over 200 points; they also included L293D, Kingsif, Enwebb, Lee Vilenski and CAPTAIN MEDUSA. Seven of the top ten contestants in Round 1 are new to the WikiCup.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. In Round 1 there were four featured articles, one featured list and two featured pictures, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. Between them, contestants completed 127 good article reviews, nearly a hundred more than the 43 good articles they claimed for, thus making a substantial dent in the review backlog. Contestants also claimed for 40 featured article / featured list reviews, and most even remembered to mention their WikiCup participation in their reviews (a requirement).

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

Draft of advice for a particular noticeboard

I've been keeping them in my mind, and thinking that it really is something incredibly positive that we are doing here, and yes, there are a few rough patches we can work on.

We rely on admins to mop up the spills and it can be a pretty bloody thankless task, so let me say thank you for your efforts. God knows that I prefer being able to run away and do something else when things get too hot, but you folk have to put on your admin boots and wade in. Thanks.

Speaking of hot, I'm sure everybody has been aware of the bushfires in Australia. There's a regular article we put out, for example 2016–17 Australian bushfire season, because of course we have most of our bushfires in the Southern Hemisphere summer which spans two years. We've been doing this for years, and it's usually a pretty uncontroversial thing.

Not this year. There have been all sorts of political aspects, and supporters of various political positions have been having a go at our article, not wanting to talk about the fires so much as make sure that they get their particular views into Wikipedia and that makes it official.

Sigh.

It's turned into a bit of a hotbed, and it's just massive compared to previous years: 2019–20 Australian bushfire season

I've tried to stay out of all that, but I got pulled in when I saw some edit-warring over something really stupid. (Story of my life, I guess.) The end date of the bushfire season. In previous years, we've gone along with the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, and they have a graphic showing the season in various regions, and it starts in winter (June-August) in the northern parts where the summers are really wet, and ends in spring (March-May) in Tasmania. So the Australian bushfire season really goes all year round from June of one year to May of the next.

I didn't know this at first, and the question in this year's article was that if all the summer bushfires were out, then perhaps the season was over? One guy said March was the end of the season because all of the bushfires were out, and another said the end of the season was ongoing because there might be more. This sounded like he had a handy view into the future to me, and I got sucked in over the philosophical implications.

Anyways, it got pretty heated there, with edit-warring and some trolling and a personal attack or two.

I was proposing an RfC on the season end date, going by the advice of Cas Liber who had waded into the flames and told us to stop throwing rocks at each other. I didn't see that this particular comment was anything but personal, so I looked up WP:RPA, removed it and left the suggested template.

The other guy complained to Admin Cas, who presumably sighed, grabbed his fire extinguisher, and jumped in once more. No criticism of Cas Liber, but I'd put in a comment about my philosophy on Wikipedia:

God forbid that any article should be seen as the personal preserve of a clique who launch personal attacks and edit-war over trivia. Let us set aside ego and attachment, and calmly accept that wikiprocedure will guide us through any difficulty.

and Cas removed it, saying that if I could remove someone else's personal attack, then he could remove my comments, which were not actually directed at anybody in particular, and are sentiments I hold pretty close to my heart and consider could usefully be employed by more people, not just in Wikipedia, but in wider life.

Again, not a breath of criticism toward Cas, but where does the community of admins stand on the matter of humble editors pushing the line of civility and tolerance so eloquently expressed by Jimbo?

2019–20 Australian bushfire season

Since one of the main protagonists at that article now seems to be otherwise engaged, and discussion on the Talk page has died right down (apart from some good suggestions for improvements), do you think it's time to unprotect it so that sensible editing might continue? May I beg your indulgence?

I try to speak with a gentle voice, and to steer discussion toward wikiwork, not personalities, but it seems that one editor on the bushfires page prefers otherwise. I'd remove his latest as an obvious personal attack, but based on previous form, he'd revert and claim the mandate of heaven for his abuse, and it would all turn into more disruption.

I'll ignore him unless he actually makes some response which is on-topic, but I shouldn't have to cop such abuse. Nor should any editor.

Fact is, your position did change and it seemed that in the end, if you want it to say 'May' then waiting till May when sources say it has ended in May would be prudent. So just leave it till then. Pish. My position is unimportant. We editors are not sources. I changed my stance when I found what we'd done in previous years. We're never going to get an official source saying this season ended in May. Virus TFA

Cas and Graham Beards, I am very confused by the feedback here, and suggest that if we must overcome bureaucracy to run a relevant and topical TFA, I don't know what the process is about any more. I am not going to jump through hoops to advance someone else's helpful idea ... and helpful it was, considering we had the chance to showcase something worthy and topical on the mainpage. SandyGeorgia, I have not taken part in the discussions because there is a possible COI. I think it is being suggested that the Introduction article should be "updated" to include the emergent viruses such as SARS and SAR-2 (the current pandemic strain) and then approval of the new content to be obtained from the med project. The former I am happy to do (although I always regarded the Introduction article to be an overview) the latter I am not. To be frank, from what I have seen with the plethora of COVID articles, where our treasured WP:MEDRS seems to have all but abandoned, the project no longer has my trust (and hasn't for sometime). Apparently there are some “leading lights” of Wp:Med and “they” are to be consulted. Curiously, none of the Wp:med fa writers know who these luminescent ones might be or how we seek their approval without canvassing. This whole thing is very odd, and considering it was someone else’s idea, I have no further interest in advancing it. There was already a thread at wt:med. I guess wehwalt just doesn’t want to do a bit extra to add value to the FA process. Oddest set of TFA requirements I have ever seen. Yet Ealdgyth was all set to go with it ... I have been asleep, it's early morning in the UK. Sandy's synopsis is accurate. I have responded at Talk:Introduction to viruses. I must stress that this was not my or Sandy's idea and up to now I have not partaken in any discussions. Perhaps my skin is too thin, but there have been hurtful innuendos regarding my competence which are demoralising. I brought a vital article to FA, served as FAC coordinator for years but still have to get my worked checked by "leading lights" at a dysfunctional project. I have had my fair share of exposure on the Main Page. There is nothing in this for me apart more concern about inaccurate edits on top of all the problems I am having to deal with at the plethora of coronavirus articles where some helpful input from leading lights would not go amiss. I created White House Coronavirus Task Force, which led me to look into 2020 coronavirus pandemic in the United States, which is so horrid I had to unwatch before I blew a circuit. (I did make a few changes first, and suggested on talk page that the article is dreadfully POV and not useful to our readers.) If there is a place I can help without getting into trouble, please point me to it, but all of these articles are in gross violation of not just MEDRS, but everything else (UNDUE, POV, NOTNEWS, the works). Any chance of a DYK prep to queue promotion?

Cas Liber, at the moment Prep 3 is ready for promotion. If you have time, do you think you could promote it to Queue 3, assuming another admin doesn't get there first?

Right now, we need to open up one more prep so we can move the lead hook (and any others) out of Prep 1 so it can be used for assembling the April Fools' Day list, so it would be very helpful to have that done. At the moment, the planned lead hook for Prep 4 is a subject of intense discussion, as there is a disagreement about what the best approach is, so it may be another day or so before it's ready for promotion.

Banksia ashbyi

Hi Cas, and other lurkers :D My Banksia ashbyi plant is being particular helpful and productive this year it has given a nice little show of the various stages of the flower growth all at once you can view the photos on commons. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Banksia_ashbyi_flowering_stages I'll keep adding to this as the progress over the next few months.
