The other foot?Edit

Ahoy, Captain! I hope you're enjoying your vacation. I noticed you listed Mike Salzano at WP:FOOTYDEL, but I think he plays the other kind of footy? I didn't want to just remove it without checking with you first. Best, Levivich 04:05, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

When in the cloud, do as the APIs do

Half a century ago, it was the era of the mainframe computer, with its air-conditioned room, twitching tape-drives, and appearance in the title of a spy novel Billion-Dollar Brain then made into a Hollywood film. Now we have the cloud, with server farms and the client–server model as quotidian: this text is being typed on a Chromebook.

Logo of Cloud API on Google Cloud Platform

The term Applications Programming Interface or API is 50 years old, and refers to a type of software library as well as the interface to its use. While a compiler is what you need to get high-level code executed by a mainframe, an API out in the cloud somewhere offers a chance to perform operations on a remote server. For example, the multifarious bots active on Wikipedia have owners who exploit the MediaWiki API.

APIs (called RESTful) that allow for the GET HTTP request are fundamental for what could colloquially be called "moving data around the Web"; from which Wikidata benefits 24/7. So the fact that the Wikidata SPARQL endpoint at query.wikidata.org has a RESTful API means that, in lay terms, Wikidata content can be GOT from it. The programming involved, besides the SPARQL language, could be in Python, younger by a few months than the Web.

Magic words, such as occur in fantasy stories, are wishful (rather than RESTful) solutions to gaining access. You may need to be a linguist to enter Ali Baba's cave or the western door of Moria (French in the case of "Open Sesame", in fact, and Sindarin being the respective languages). Talking to an API requires a bigger toolkit, which first means you have to recognise the tools in terms of what they can do. On the way to the wikt:impactful or polymathic modern handling of facts, one must perhaps take only tactful notice of tech's endemic problem with documentation, and absorb the insightful point that the code in APIs does articulate the customary procedures now in place on the cloud for getting information. As Owl explained to Winnie-the-Pooh, it tells you The Thing to Do.

Advertising?Edit

How am I advertising him? Sorry if that came out rude I’m sorta new to this but could you tell me which part you didn’t like. Lamarsmith15 (talk) 12:55, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

@Lamarsmith15: It's commonplace enough that people wish to bolster their credibility by having a wikipedia article. The question for the Ben Brooks (investor) article is whether the whole thing is an example of that practice, or an example of an individual who passes WP:GNG. I think CAPTAIN RAJU, working at speed as we all do when reviewing new articles, decided that it was, in effect, a WP:SPAM article. I've taken the view that it is not. On another day, it is as likely that I would have taken Raju's part, and they might have taken my part. I think it's not unreasonable to say that Ben currently sits somewhere fairly close to the borderline; opinions will differ as to which side of the border he's to be found. I can totally appreciate why Raja looked at the article and decided it was spam. So I think, rather than a specific part of the article, it's the whole thing.
If Raju wishes to pursue their concern, they'll now take the article to AfD, and if that happens, we'll have to buckle down and do a more forensic examination of whether or not GNG is in fact passed. --Tagishsimon (talk) 19:29, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

April 17: WikiWednesday Salon and Skill-Share NYC + April 4 and 5: LaGuardia Community College Translatathon 2019Edit

April 17, 7pm: WikiWednesday Salon and Skill-Share NYC
Wikimedia New York City logo.svg

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our monthly "WikiWednesday" evening salon (7-9pm) and knowledge-sharing workshop at Metropolitan New York Library Council in Midtown Manhattan. Is there a project you'd like to share? A question you'd like answered? A Wiki* skill you'd like to learn? Let us know by adding it to the agenda.

We will also follow up on plans for recent and upcoming edit-a-thons, museum and library projects, education initiatives, and other outreach activities.

7:00pm - 9:00 pm at Metropolitan New York Library Council (8th floor) at 599 11th Avenue, Manhattan
(note this month we will be meeting in Midtown Manhattan, not at Babycastles)

We especially encourage folks to add your 5-minute lightning talks to our roster, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Wikimedia New York City Team 21:05, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

Thursday April 4 and Friday April 5: Translat-a-thon NYC 2019 @ LaGuardia Community College
LaGuardia CC E jeh.jpg

Translat-a-thon NYC 2019 @ LaGuardia Community College is hosting the second annual Wikipedia Translatathon! At this event on Thursday evening and during the day Friday this week, anyone from the public is invited to LaGuardia to join students, professors, and CUNY faculty in translating Wikipedia articles among any languages which attendees understand. Themes for this event include public health and the history of New York City.

New York City has a large immigrant population and great diversity of speakers of various languages. Among all schools in New York City, LaGuardia has the highest percentage of immigrant students, the highest percentage of students who speak a language other than English as their first language, and the greatest representation of language diversity. It is a strength of LaGuardia that it can present "Wikipedia translatathons", which are Wikipedia translation events.

(You can subscribe/unsubscribe from future notifications for NYC-area events by adding or removing your name from this list.)

Bhapa pithaEdit

Why do you think that my contribution was not constructive? If you can read you should also know that the name "Bhapa pitha" is a Bengali which referes to Bangladesh or West Bengal but West Bengal is not the whole india so in the country section India can not be puted as West Bengal is not a country. But in the region or state section you will see that it is like what it was before cause West Bengal is a state or region not a country. And now come to the point of origin in next chat. • Two more administrator accounts were compromised. Evidence has shown that these attacks, like previous incidents, were due to reusing a password that was used on another website that suffered a data breach. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately. All admins are strongly encouraged to enable two-factor authentication, please consider doing so. Please always practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.
  • As a reminder, according to WP:NOQUORUM, administrators looking to close or relist an AfD should evaluate a nomination that has received few or no comments as if it were a proposed deletion (PROD) prior to determining whether it should be relisted.

Speedy deletion request on Doubles curling is erroneousEdit

Hi, you recently tagged the article Doubles curling for speedy deletion due to copyright infringement. In looking further at the website you cited [16], they reference the Mixed curling article that Doubles curling was just split from directly above the two paragraphs that match with this article. Therefore there is no copyright infringement because they got the text from Wikipedia, not the other way around. This speedy deletion is erroneous and should be removed. Thank you. - A202985 (talk) 21:08, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

Deletion sortingEdit

WP:AFD/USA reads 'This is a high level category for deletion sorting. Whenever possible, it is recommended for deletion discussions to be added to more specific categories, such as a state and/or relevant subject area.' If a AFD is already in some state deletion sorting, it does not go here too....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 09:28, 20 April 2019 (UTC)
