Commas

As I stated in my reversion move, there is no consensus to insert commas into the disambiguation links for Australian footballers. If you read the (as always) fairly limited discussion that lead to the "always use commas" line being inserted into the WP:NCPDAB, there was limited consensus for the use of commas where the disambiguator was an occupation, as opposed to the sport. There was also no consensus to apply it retrospectively. What you and User:Tanbircdq are doing is a complete waste of time and unless you are going to go back and fix up the template and other links to all of these articles you are taking the project backwards. Please do not commas into the name of any articles under WP:AFL project. We already have 100% consistency across our project and are quite happy where we are at the moment. If there is limited consensus for the use of commas where the disambiguator is an occupation, as opposed to the sport then should not an RfC be raised on this issue to get this amended as this would be misleading and causes further inconsistency is article creation and moves.

If your project is consistent which you are all happy with, does this mean the use of the other format is inconsistent?

Like almost every RFC that aims for consistency, it means that any area that was already consistent, correct, unambiguous and just fine, can be made inconsistent because editors from that area either weren't consulted, weren't aware of the discussion or weren't listened to. The problem with moving articles, but leaving links, specifically template links, pointing to the redirect is that the article doesn't show up in bold in the navbox anymore. If you read the original "conformity" discussion, you see numerous people saying "comma's are OK if it makes sense, ie Politician born 1888 makes sense, Ice hockey born 1988 needs a comma. And of course it was a multi-faceted discussion, so plenty of people focused on born vs b. and ignored the comma issue. I'm pretty sure brevity and being concise used to be in the dab guidelines, but seem to have been removed, but it's weird to say "try to avoid using abbreviations or anything containing hyphens, dashes or numbers" and then force an unnecessary commas. I understand that you are just following a guideline (and remember guidelines aren't rules), but there was never any instruction or desire to force this change on existing articles. And what makes Australian footballers different? Not much, other than we have 150 footballer born XXXX articles and until recently none had commas. 8 do now. If I'm fighting a losing battle, I've got much more important things to worry about than a superfluous comma. Carry on, just don't leave too big a mess behind you. I only started doing the moves after a move I made to remove the comma on a footballer's article was reverted back.

I agree with your opinion that (occupation born XXXX) e.g (Politician born 1888) makes sense, and (sport, born XXXX) e.g (Ice hockey, born 1988) clearly needs a comma. Our 150 footballers without a comma are nothing compared to the amount of round ball footballers without a comma. So, look forward to having a similar discussion with the people from WP:FOOTY such as User:GiantSnowman when they notice what's going on. You can read his thoughts on the "consensus" here. My take on the matter - and this discussion needs centralizing by the way - is that the preferred format (in sport) is without the comma; from what I remember the change was driven by cricket editors who used that format, whereas other sports editors (such as soccer, like myself) wanted it without a comma, as shown by the thousands and thousands of articles which still use that format. But it's such a relatively minor thing and I am just happy to go with the flow. GiantSnowman 18:18, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

You talking to me?

Not sure whether to start with shallow or deep background... I'm philosophically inclined to go deep first, so I'll start there.

I think we are philosophically aligned and that most of the so-called Wikipedians would agree with my philosophy that most people are mostly good. Therefore giving them an opportunity to do good things, such as share their personal knowledge, is also good. I'm less clear how much we would agree on bad behaviors and whether or not evil exists as a motivation. I think Wikipedia seems to be hung up on a peculiar notion of "vandalism" as a key "sin", whereas I'm more focused on economic incentives. I see technology as morally neutral, but if some people see ways to make a few bucks by abusing any particular technology, then you have to expect some abuse. If you want to get at the heart of economically motivated abuse, then you need to go after the money. (There are non-economic motivations, too, but those are more difficult to address. Perhaps impossible within a NPOV model.)

Funny point of unity there. This reasoning led me to stop using Wikipedia some months ago, because I feel like using Wikipedia is supporting a naively criminal enterprise. However I decided to visit a few days ago because you were asking for money (as noticed on a friend's computer when called over to see an article on Wikipedia).

That leads right into the shallow background. In response to seeing your plea for donations, I decided to visit Wikipedia. Perhaps things had improved during my extended absence? Evidently not so much. During my brief visit, I discovered that you [Mark S] had tried to send me some kind of message via your Talk page. Perhaps you had some comment regarding my concerns about the flagrant criminals who are abusing Wikipedia? I should at least give it polite consideration, eh? Perhaps I could even map my concerns into your conception of "vandalism"? So I followed the link to your Talk page, where I could find no trace of any message directed to me.

Well, the next step seemed to be to ask you what it was about, but I was blocked. Not personally, though it was rather difficult to determine that, but because at that time I was associated with an IP address that was included in a block of IP addresses that Wikipedia had blocked over a year ago. Therefore I initiated the appeal process, which was quickly rejected by some administrator named jpgordon. From the comment associated with his rejection, it is pretty clear he doesn't know or care about what is actually going on. From a technical perspective, I'm also sure he is incorrect--but why should I care? (To send you this comment, I obviously went around your so-called block. Since the block was obviously a mistake and a bug in your so-called defenses, the evasion was trivial. I was being polite to "respect" it until I obtained additional information.)

Back on deep background again, but for an organization that says it wants to encourage broad participation, I have to conclude that Wikipedia has a really peculiar way of showing it. I don't think you need more participation from criminals and less participation from people who don't like criminals. Apart from my dislike of criminals, I could even contribute from a technical perspective, since I work for a research lab. But I won't. My current opinion of Wikipedia is that you are a bunch of well-intentioned folks, but with a rather weak grasp of reality, so the entire enterprise will probably crash and burn fairly soon.

Okay, so much for the background. Do you have any recollection of what your comment directed to me was? I'll try to visit Wikipedia again in a week or two to check for any response. However, the bottom line is that I sort of wish Wikipedia well, I definitely wish the criminals ill, and I'm extremely unlikely to donate any time or money.

Mizzou Arena

The section I removed was very promotional "fully cushioned theatre-style seats" and "offering full food and drink service, televisions and other comforts" are examples. It was directly advertising the Tiger Scholarhip Fund, the Clinton Club bar, the concession stands, and the Tiger Team store and mention of the private boxes and meeting room is probably to encourage payment for their usage. Page moves

Hi. I wonder if you could tell me why you moved the articles Scottish religion in the eighteenth century to Scottish religion in the 18th century and Scottish religion in the eighteenth century to Scottish religion in the 18th century, and other changes associated with them, given that WP:CENTURY states that: "Centuries and millennia are identified using either figures (the 18th century, not XVIII century) or words (the second millennium)". These are perfectly valid titles ‎and it is not normal to change a valid system without some very good reason, usually discussed on the talkpage of the relevant articles first. Hi. Thanks for your work on maintaining standards in article names. I see that you moved a number of Cleveland-related pages, citing WP:USPLACE as a rationale. I'm afraid you've misinterpreted the guideline in this instance. The second paragraph in the section notes that the comma convention does not apply to cities listed in the AP Stylebook, and Cleveland is among those cities. Please consider moving the pages back. I know you're probably as exhausted about the topic as I am, but Eodcarl is asking for comments about a consensus to remove the Paige Sports Arena information from the lede and infobox of the article on the talk page, and is stubbornly refusing to let any editors know to comment (their first attempt at proposing the removal basically started out as combative and I refused to comment on it and they tried to take that as an OK to remove). Moving Hillary articles

Hi. Please move United States Senate career of Hillary Clinton and Hillary Clinton's tenure as Secretary of State back to their previous titles. The main article RM close explicitly did not resolve the case of the various subarticles. Nor were these two even proposed in that RM. Discussions of some subarticles are ongoing – see Talk:Hillary Rodham Clinton/April 2015 move request #Other articles that were proposed to be moved – but these two haven't been included in that. Since much of the argument in the main RM discussion revolves around current use in the 2016 presidential campaign, these two subarticles involve past timeframes and clear use by her of the HRC form. People will make arguments for this both ways, but as you no doubt know there are strong feelings on this matter and it needs a discussion on a case-by-case basis. • I am author of this article and can be you better know which name is correct. But I understand, for example, when "Kolomna-class" due to one word in the name of class. March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

• tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
• updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
• creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

Moving over redirects

As an FYI, anyone who is autoconfirmed can move an article over a one-line redirect that is targeting the page that is to be moved. You don't need to be an admin or page mover to do that. For redirects with more than one line in the page history, or where the the redirect targets another page, you can make the request at WP:RM/TR without having to go through an RM. If an admin or page mover thinks the request might be controversial, they will create the move discussion for you as a contested technical move. I know you said that you thought The Gateway Pundit, might be controversial, but leaving a note in case you need a technical move in the future. TonyBallioni (talk) 20:19, 12 March 2017 (UTC)

I have identified that a lot of sources end up being considered unreliable on wikipedia simply for not having a written editorial policy on their website. It's an idea. I'm only freelancing for them at the moment, but I'm friends with one of their regular reporters. Hopefully some of the in-depth investigative journalism Heat Street is becoming known for will convince other Wikipedia editors the outlet is credible. What's your indication that Category:Tanks of Greece and other countries need to be produced in that country? Greece and the Phillipines etc. don't make tanks, so the result of this approach is that these categories will be emptied and then deleted. Thanks for the message. I strongly believe these are WP:TRIVIALCATs. Tanks that have a strong association with a place (i.e. place of manufacture) might merit a category to themselves. I was just reading this 2013 discussion about Gulf War categories that has informed the way I think about this. Tanks that just happened to serve in the Gulf War don't get a category all by themselves. Weapons designed specifically for that war might.

Incidentally as I write this I'm trying to decipher redlinks on my raw watchlist where the category was depopulated and then deleted w/o explanation: Category:Armoured fighting vehicles of Jordan, Category:Armoured fighting vehicles of Kuwait, Category:Armoured fighting vehicles of Peru Category:Main battle tanks of Canada. Most of these I created myself years ago and I have to agree now that most of these are undesirable. What do you think? Mark Schierbecker (talk) 07:37, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

I don't know... you have a point and you may be right. Looking at the Sherman Tank, for instance... it was used by a whole lot of armies, and to add "Tanks of X" for all those countries to the article would overwhelm the other categories on that article page

On the other hand... taking it not from the perspective of the each tank but of each country, it's different. Category:Tanks of Greece only has a few entries, and of course none are designed or even made in Greece. So if we take out all those, the category is emptied, then deleted by a bot, and someone wanting to answer the reasonable question "What tanks has the Greek Army used" will harder time of it.

So hmmm... how to thread this needle. I'm not sure. We could make a list instead... that is considerable work. Categories are blunt instruments -- you are either in or not. Lists allow more subtleties ("Here are some they made themselves, here are ones they didn't but used a lot, here are some they used a little, here are some they modified for local conditions"). I don't know as I'm up for that level of commitment...

I do think that just taking out a few tanks here and there at random isn't maybe best... a by country approach rather than than a by tank approach might be best, maybe.

For instance Category:Tanks of Greece has had the M24 Chaffee removed, but it still has five entries -- Pattons, Leaopards, etc. So it's now even worse than it was -- in addition to being (arguably) trivial it is now incomplete. It should probably be left as it was or wiped clean. (Unless you're saying that Greek M24 Chaffee use was different -- less notable, maybe -- compared to these other five, which I don't think you are, or maybe you are?)

If we do want to empty out Category:Tanks of Greece and so forth, I'm not sure how this done, but wouldn't a discussion at Categories for Discussion be in order? Or maybe not, I don't know how it is done. Herostratus (talk) 16:43, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

I have blocked the account, and deleted the talk page and user page. I didn't think it was at all likely to be you, but I thought it best to check with you before taking action just on the very remote chance it might be. Usually in this sort of situation it's a sock puppet of someone who been in a dispute with the victim (you in this case), but occasionally it is a sock puppet who just picks an editor at random to copy a talk page from in order to get an "instant" appearance of being an established editor. (Of course that doesn't work if anyone looks at the editing history.) This edit makes it look as though it's someone deliberately targeting you, though. First off, thanks for the ellipses... that's proper usage (although it is typically three dots). However, you should have also included ellipses in the beginning of your attribution, and not capitalized "T".

Your mishandling of his quote changed the meaning of the sentence. Your version makes it seem that Clapper is speaking for the intelligence community at large. But what he actually does is qualify it with "For the part of the national security apparatus that I oversaw as DNI...".

This is not a trivial mistake. It changes the meaning of what Clapper said significantly. Particularly in such a high-visibility article, we must exercise extraordinary caution, particularly in direct quotes. In the future please do be more careful. Marteau (talk) 02:58, 20 September 2017 (UTC)

Gamergate, Anita Sarkeesian, and neutral opinions.

Dear Mark Schierbecker, I noticed we both got into trouble with the same editor, by putting forward the opinions/the reverse of the coin in regards to Gamergate and Mrs. Sarkeesian. On her page I clumsily, put forwards the reasons people put forward on her hatred. 1. that she stole footage from other YouTuber. 2. mis-reviewed two games. 3. footage of her saying two completely different thing in regards to her being a gamer or not. 4. she didn't accomplish her kickstarter promise.

I admit, I clumsily put it to together as I made a section called "Reception from other YouTubers" as it should have been a sub section of her current reception.

I asked politely this editor why he edited out, and I found his reply hyperbolic, but self explanatory. Hence I asked: I read your reply real fast, thought about it, and realized it's something that should be more in the reviews of her show (currently a re-direct page), or probably as sub section of reception. As I re-read your reply and find the word egregious is extremely far fetch. As it is true or are the reasons people put forward, that she stole footage from other YouTuber, mis-reviewed two games, footage of her saying two completely different thing, and also she didn't accomplish her kickstarter promise(something I didn't get into). The result is an extreme backslash or one may argue that these are reasons people use to go after her, which I think both are valid in a relevant article. So in your opinion what do we do with that information?

Hi Bibly and Mark, Thank you both for your swift replies. I will be the first one to admit that goofed as it probably was a (NPOV) issues and, but honestly aside from me making a main section I thought it was ok. To be honest I do not for sure. I think what triggered the purge was "number 2" "mis-reviewed two games", is in regards to Hitman: Absolution and Just Cause 2. Since the core of her reviews was about strippers getting killed in these two games, this was debunked by YouTube reviewers. So I think my description was either poor, or/and sounded too vulgar for the admin who purged it. Jorm who deleted it, pointed on his page a violation of WP:BLP. By the way my thread to him is right below yours on his talk page.

Maybe, I should have balanced her opinion against her critics more fairly, but to be honest I don't entirely know.Filmman3000 (talk) 22:27, 2 February 2018 (UTC)

To clarify, the reason it was hidden was that there were accusations included in the text - that she stole footage and that she publicly lied - both sourced to YouTube videos and employing original research. As these are serious accusations, and as they were not adequately sourced, I hid the text as a BLP violation after someone else had reverted the text. I didn't want to make a big deal of the revdel, as I believed that Filmman3000 was acting in good faith and assumed that a discussion over the reversion would be a better means of moving forward. - Bilby (talk) 00:14, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

Hi Bilby, thank you for your explanation, it makes total sense. The reason I approached Mark is because the original editor was rude, to both him and I. I am not sure if came completely in good faith, but thank you for the kind words. Yes, I thought I was improving the article and many YouTubers have alleged the things I have wrote. And no because here is my bias I believe them. The two sources I put did state these accusations, but I swear to god there is so much of it out the, that we wont lack of citations. I do believe it is the best interest to cite the rebuttals of critics balanced with what she originally said. Furthermore many YouTuber who have criticized them have their own Wikipages. Unfortunately, the problem isn't one that can be solved by more neutral text. The problem is the sourcing - Wikipedia's BLP policy prevents us from making claims about living people through the use of self published sources, such as the YouTube videos. In the end, it is something that we can't add unless the mainstream media or other, similar, media choose to report on the subject. It makes things difficult, because there are times when we want to add material that mainstream media simply isn't covering, but the alternative leaves us very open to people posting libel - we assume that if a reliable media source has covered something they have also independently vetted the claim through their editorial process, but we can't make that same assumption with self published sources. - Bilby (talk) 00:52, 5 February 2018 (UTC)

I agree with Bilby. Its unfortunate that reliable mainstream outlets seldom report on anything in YouTube world besides the latest Logan Paul controversy. I don't know whether the original oversight was justified (I usually don't touch BLPs, so not an expert), but drafting this in your userspace/sandbox would not help since the policies relating to BLPs also apply to userspace. April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

• tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
• adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
• updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
• creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Mark Schierbecker. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
