OverviewEdit

This election is to appoint the project coordinator team for one year, from 30 September 2017 to 29 September 2018. Coordinators are generally responsible for maintaining all of the procedural and administrative aspects of the project. All of the coordinators, and especially the lead coordinator (or lead coordinators), serve as the designated points-of-contact for procedural issues and focus on specific areas requiring special attention. They are not, however, endowed with any special executive powers.

ResponsibilitiesEdit

From Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Coordinators:

The primary responsibility of the project coordinators is the maintenance and housekeeping work involved in keeping the project and its internal processes running smoothly; this includes a variety of tasks, such as keeping the announcement and open task lists updated, overseeing the assessment and review processes, managing the proposal and creation of task forces, and so forth. There is fairly little involved that couldn't theoretically be done by any other editor, of course—in only a few places have the coordinators been explicitly written into a process—but, since experience suggests that people tend to assume that someone else is doing whatever needs to be done, it has proven beneficial to formally delegate responsibility for this administrative work to a specified group.

The coordinators also have several additional roles. They serve as the project's designated points of contact, and are explicitly listed as people to whom questions can be directed in a variety of places around the project. In addition, they have (highly informal) roles in leading the drafting of project guidelines, overseeing the implementation of project decisions on issues like category schemes and template use, and helping to resolve disputes and keep discussions from becoming heated and unproductive.

Practical information on coordinating may be found here and here.

The current coordinators are:

  • The election will be conducted using simple approval voting. Any member of the project may support as many of the candidates as they wish. The candidate with the highest number of endorsements will become the lead coordinator (provided he or she is willing to assume the post); this position may be shared in the event that multiple candidates receive the highest number of endorsements. The remaining candidates with 15 or more endorsements will be appointed as coordinators to a maximum of 11 appointments (including the lead coordinator). The number of coordinators may be increased or reduced if there is a tie or near-tie for the last position.
  • Both project members and interested outside parties are encouraged to ask questions of the nominees or make general comments.

AnotherclownEdit

Anotherclown (talk · contribs)

I’ve been a project co-ordinator on and off since late-2012. Although I’m busy in real life I’m throwing my hat in the ring for another year to help keep the lights on.

Comments and questions for AnotherclownEdit

  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • Along with a large number of our other volunteers I sometimes get some small sense of satisfaction out of having been (an admittedly small) part of the steady improvement of a subset of our articles (including a few A and GA articles listed here).
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • I’ve been involved with MILHIST in some form for about 8 years I think, and a co-ordinator for four, so probably time in grade and a pulse. More seriously though, when I have the time I’m more than willing to do some of the more mundane administrative tasks expected of our co-ordinators (including tagging and assessment, welcoming new members, helping to administer our A-class reviews, helping out with backlog drives, and offering advice when its within my competence).

AuntieruthEdit

Auntieruth55 (talk · contribs)

As time permits, I've been a project coordinator since about 2012-2013, but I've been involved in MilHist since 2009, when I first started editing for Wikipedia, so I'll throw my hat into the hopper for another round.

Comments and questions for AuntieruthEdit

  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • I try to assess articles regularly, usually slogging through the backlog of unassessed and new articles with no task force, all mundane tasks, but necessary to keep the doors open. I also try to contribute my mite to the regular avalanche of articles needing review. I typically edit articles on Seven Years' Wars and French Revolutionary Wars.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • Calmness. Editing skills. I check in regularly, although sometimes real life intervenes, but I pitch in when I can.

AustralianRupertEdit

AustralianRupert (talk · contribs)

I have been a project co-ordinator since March 2010, with a couple of breaks in service. I had been hoping to take next year off to focus on article writing and other things in real life, but feel that with so few nominations that I should probably offer my services again if project members want me to.

Comments and questions for AustralianRupertEdit

  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • Mostly not forgetting my password and remembering the mark up coding to trigger Milhist bot to archive A-class reviews...I would also like to think I have made a few useful contributions to our review processes and have written a couple of articles since I joined the project eight years ago.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • Probably a lack of other hobbies.

BibliowormEdit

Biblioworm (talk · contribs)

For as long as I can remember, I have been interested in military history. Naturally, then, I joined this project almost as soon as I heard about it, which was not long after I joined Wikipedia. In all, I have been a member of the project for more than two-and-a-half years. Throughout that time, I have perhaps not been an especially visible or vocal member, but I have made contributions to the project, particularly in the area of content (for more information, see my response to the first question).
However, that is not the only reason why I am interested in this project. In addition, MilHist is, in my view, one of the few areas of Wikipedia that actually works. It is organized, collaborative, and, above all, effective. It achieves its goals, such as the five milestones listed on the main project page.
So that, in summary, is why I have decided to become a candidate for MilHist coordinator. To be clear from the start, I will not be available every day; I do have off-wiki matters, such as my profession and family, to attend to. And without a doubt, those things will always take precedence. But I am offering to assist whenever and wherever I can do so.

Comments and questions for BibliowormEdit

  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • The core purpose of this project is, quite obviously, to build high-quality military history articles. Therefore, I am most proud of my content contributions to this project. I have four good articles, all of which directly pertain to military history. I created three of those articles; I brought the fourth one up, from a rather dismal state, to good article status. I also have five DYKs which are related to military history. Finally, I have reviewed good article nominees related to MilHist, and I copy-edited several military history articles when I was active in the Guild of Copy Editors.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • First of all, I have access to the administrator tools, so I could help out with any administrative tasks which need to be performed within the project. But more importantly, a good part of my tenure on Wikipedia has been spent trying to improve its system of governance. Thus, my greatest strength is probably my ability to produce possible solutions for any issues that might arise. Even the most vehement opponents of my reform efforts have conceded that I am quite good at coming up with ideas. In another words, I am very much interested in solving problems. As I said in my statement, I believe that this project already works very well, and hopefully, things will stay that way. But if there ever is a problem that must be addressed, I would be more than glad to help in doing so.

Cinderella157Edit

Cinderella157 (talk · contribs)

I have been editing here since 2014 with major rewrites of two significant articles and the creation of some others. I am not a prolific editor but I have tried to contribute positively to discussions and have been very grateful for the guidance and mentoring that I have received. While my interest might be narrow, I have copy-edited several articles. I respect the contributions of other editors and have generally been able to improve articles for readability and style while maintaining cordiality.

Comments and questions for Cinderella157Edit

  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • My two most significant contributions are Battle of Buna–Gona and Kokoda Track campaign. These have been significant undertakings. Somewhat equally, is the article on Herbert Thomson Kienzle. In writing the article, I made contact with his biographer and daughter-in-law. It was rewarding to engage with the family and to gain their affirmation.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • I am a very "analytical" person. To this extent, I can contribute my balanced and reasoned judgment. I am a teacher and would like to reciprocate the guidance and mentoring I have received. It has been suggested to me that I should nominate. To this extent, I do not seek office but would accept same if the community deems that my contributions might be of value and undertake to attend to any duties to the best of my ability.

  1. Support. As with Biblio, new blood is welcome. It brings new perspectives and fresh eyes. Hello! I'm Harry. I've been a coordinator since 2011 (with a one-year break in 2016). Milhist is the project that most other projects aim to emulate and it's the people that make it what it is. We have an amazingly supportive community who are able to nurture articles and their authors through all the stages of an article's development and the coordinators play a vital role in keeping our internal review processes running smoothly. I've been kept busy by real life lately, but I'd like the opportunity to serve again if you'll have me.

Comments and questions for HarryEdit

  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • If I had to pick one above all others, it would be British military intervention in the Sierra Leone Civil War, which I wrote from scratch and took through FAC. I was pleased with that because it was a challenging article at 7,000 words and on an important piece of recent history and felt like a more serious academic subject than some of the things I'd written before. More recently, I've taken to writing about war memorials to mark the centenary of the First World War, a project which has produced several featured articles so far with more to come. I'm also proud of some of my reviewing work at A-class and FAC, where I tend to review thoroughly if not very prolifically.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • I'm an admin and oversighter, so I can help in those capacities if needed. I have a good understanding of the review processes, and I've been involved in Wikipedia and Milhist for a long time so I bring some institutional memory.

Ian RoseEdit

Ian Rose (talk · contribs)

I've been a coordinator since 2009 (with a break in 2015-16) so if I'm not a known quantity by now I don't know who is! I'm also a FAC coordinator, which gives me a further opportunity to put myself in harm's way... ;-) Why do I do it? Well apart from the fame and the money of course, I just think someone should do this kind of thing and if people are prepared to give me a go then I'm happy to help.

Comments and questions for IanEdit

  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • I've taken a lot of articles to A/FA-class, sometimes in collaboration with other editors, all of which has been very enjoyable, as has editing the monthly Bugle for several years, initially with Ed and then with Nick-D. If I've helped out with discussions, or kept things ticking over with the housekeeping that's part-and-parcel of coord work, then that's the icing on the cake.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • Endless patience...! No, seriously -- long experience, continuing enthusiasm and (I hope) a willingness to keep learning.

IazygesEdit

Iazyges (talk · contribs)

I've been "contributing" since 2014, although my account laid dormant for about a year because I forgot about it initially. Of the time I have been editing, almost all of my edits have fallen within MILHIST areas, as they are my main interest. While initially I worked on Roman and other antique MILHIST articles, the relative lack of sources in that area turned my interests towards Maritime MILHIST, which I have been working in for almost a year now. I have been a coordinator for one term.

Comments and questions for IazygesEdit

  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • Most of my work lies in MILHIST, so it's a hard question to answer; but probably my work with my Kriegsmarine Destroyer user project, where I currently have one FAC, and six GAN articles. Or else my various four A and seven GA class articles.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • I've been a coordinator for the last year, and I've picked up a lot of the skills required to "run" the wikiproject smoothly. I am quite active, both in mainspace and in wikipedia space, so I am around to help much of the time. Most of my MILHIST activity wiki-side has been on the assessment request pages, handing out awards and maintenance work.

  1. Support. Classical history is a tough topic for all sorts of reasons so kudos for trying to make a dent there. Unless you've got a pile of very old dusty textbooks and access to all the academic journals, there's no shame in migrating to a subject area where it's easier to find sources. You've also done a good job of keeping thing ticking over behind the scenes. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:20, 17 September 2017 (UTC)

Krishna Chaitanya VelagaEdit

Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk · contribs)

Contributing since December 2014, my predominant interest lies with the Military history topics. Though initially I attended to creation of articles, I gradually realized the quality of an article is rather important. So I put efforts to develop articles to their maximum. During this period, the Military history project helped me a lot to hone my skills both in terms to writing and reviewing. As of September 2017, I hold the credit of one featured article, two featured lists, 3 A-class articles, 1 good topic (first from Indian military history), 10 good articles and several DYKs. I have reviewed over 100 good article nominations and several other A-class and featured content candidates. Though for the past few I have been passive on en Wiki, due to my outreach activities, I intend to comeback. So I find this an opportunity to serve arguably the largest WikiProject on en Wiki.

Comments and questions for Krishna Chaitanya VelagaEdit

  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • 2 Content review medals of merit, 3 WikiChevrons, 2 A-class medals, and mostly importantly the title of "Military history newcomer of the year" for 2016.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • As a coordinator, I would like to review and revamp the Academy of the project on a collaborative basis, and create more necessary policy pages for smooth functioning. Regularly, as a primary duty, I will look after the various administrative aspects of the project.

Votes in support of Krishna Chaitanya VelagaEdit

  1. Support. I was a coordinator back in 2009–11 and then stood again last year. I'd be happy to help keep things running again this year.

Comments and questions for ParsecboyEdit

  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • Over the last 7 years or so, I've written over 50 FAs on articles in the project's scope, along with probably a few hundred GAs.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • Experience, first and foremost - besides the writing experience I have, I've been a member of MILHIST for going on 10 years now. I'm also an admin, so I can help with tasks that require those tools.

Peacemaker67Edit

Peacemaker67 (talk · contribs)

I was a coordinator of the project from September 2013 to September 2016 before taking a break this last year. I believe I know most of the ropes, and if I don't, I know who does. Always happy to help keep the wheels turning.

Comments and questions for Peacemaker67Edit

  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • My content creation (30 FAs and a bunch of A-Class and GAs), and my reviewing work (which includes plenty of FA, A-Class, and GA work). I feel I make a contribution to keeping the project ticking along at all levels.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • I have been a coordinator before, so I have a fair amount of institutional knowledge (I know how to do all the regular maintenance work, contest checking, handing out awards, passing A-Class reviews, welcoming new members etc). I've updated a few project "how-to" pages, and run a couple of backlog drives, so I have a bit of a clue there too. I'm also on WP a fair bit because I'm semi-retired, so I'm generally available and the only time I am a bit sketchy is in the lead-up to ANZAC Day (25 April, when I have some pressing RW responsibilities). All this means I can contribute pretty consistently throughout the year. I'm an admin, which can also be useful for helping members do routine maintenance at times.

The ed17Edit

The ed17 (talk · contribs)

Hey, folks. I'm The ed17, but most call me Ed. I've been part of Milhist for nearly a full decade now, and was a coordinator of the project from 2008 to 2014. (I declined to run for re-election that year while facing the pressures of the first year of a master's program.) You may also know me for the battleship articles I've written as part of Operation Majestic Titan, or for my tenure at the editor of the Signpost from 2012 to 2015. With the current dearth of candidates running this year, I thought I'd throw my name in the ring again. This project is a model for the rest of Wikipedia, and I'd like to help keep it that way.
Note that while I currently work with the Wikimedia Foundation, I am running for coordinator in a personal volunteer capacity.

Comments and questions for The ed17Edit

  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • I bring some amount of institutional knowledge to the table, having been around for awhile, and I'd like to get involved in A-class reviewing again.

TomStar81Edit

TomStar81 (talk · contribs)

I've been a coordinator for like...forever, but I'll stand again if the community will have me back.

Comments and questions for TomStar81Edit

  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • Well there's an assortment of FA, A, and GA-class articles i've worked on, those are a source of pride. More recently, I've taken a quiet pride in being the primary editor behind the op-eds for WWI, although a shout out must be made to the community for spell correcting and contributing to the WWI op-ed series as well.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • I've done pretty much everything at one point or another, so I'm well acquired with how this project is run and what work needs to be done; that being said, I do need to pay a little more attention to behind the scenes work that the community relies on us for.

  1. Support. Even if you had nothing else going for you, and you have many things, your institutional memory alone would be worth keeping you around for. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:29, 17 September 2017 (UTC)
