What Is The Use Of Working On Editing Current Articles When Others Seem To Take Ownership And revert Changes

Recently worked on an article "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapter_Two_(play)" since it was rated as low quality the changes of which included increased references as well as tightening the text. Someone, probably the "original" writer of the article reverted the changes. So what purpose does it have to take the time to increase the quality of articles when people act as article terrorist? I didn't realize that this article was "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/so-and-so's_Chapter_Two_(play)" instead of "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapter_Two_(play)".

• Your edits were reverted by Frze in good faith hardly terrorism? And since you had just inserted large numbers of #'s into the text (see [1], or the diff here [2]) the revert was correct as you did not "take the time to increase the quality of articles" as you claim. I do not know why it appears as "#" since I had inserted """ "" when the edits were made. but that may have been a technical glitche since sometimes Wikipedia returns an error message saying that the changes were not made. Instead of approaching the person that made the changes you decided to unilaterally suggest the sandbox. So instead of unilaterally reverting and then sending an insulting message to that effect maybe that message of notification should have been one asking if the changes were intentional then pointing out what you found. That would be a rather more conventional way to handle a situation in an environment that is supposedly contributory universally but instead you present yourself as somehow the Wikipedia Police actions irrefutable. If I am in an apartment below yours and water is dripping from the ceiling I don't call the water department directing them to contact you; I knock on your door to say something is leaking. If no one is there I then call the management company representative and if they are not contactable then the water company since they in most likelihood will have a third party way of contact. Can you understand in what manner participants supposedly with more experience and knowledge present themselves? It seems that many corrections suggested by Wikipedia deal with assumption. Better to provide documentation from sources of lasting value than to assume merely by speculation even if highly likely. You assumed. And the result is you make a reputation for yourself that is less than complimentary. There are within the talk pages notes from people on various contents of articles about details that the person is aware there are subtle differences but not so knowledgeable as to make substantive changes. That seems a far better approach to resolving problems than unilateral revert and the sending of an insulting message. So instead of establishing what is the problem you assumed that I know what has gone wrong. Can you see the pattern? Being a poor and ignorant person I cannot remember the source but does the saying haste makes waste come to mind. So instead of resolving a problem you have increased potentially everlasting effects since what am I to think about someone supposedly with more experience not taking the effort and time to resolve questions with respect and courtesy. It is one thing to be someone's legal guardian and make unilateral decisions; you are not. And I hope it is npt a practice that others are subject to the same treatment.A1Houseboy (talk) 02:46, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

• Hi A1Houseboy, sorry that this incident has appeared to upset you. Can I ask just a simple question to test your assertions to what should have been done by Frze, myself or any of the many others that patrol:

• If after the constructive work you did in December then you saw that the next editor made this edit - would you have done as you say "asking if the changes were intentional then pointing out what you found", or would you have assumed vandalism and done as you did to Frze and just revert and call them an article terrorist?
• If that person then reverted your revert and called you a terrorist would you then go discuss politely or revert and assume as it had been done twice it was vandalism?

• The note I added to your talk page was just a standard template and I did so because: when you reverted Frze you firstly obviously did not look at the results; and secondly chose to immediately revert and just call him a terrorist.

• You had already had a notice from BracketBot on your talk page indicating a problem that along with the revert should have indicated that your edit may have a problem (in this case almost certainly a WP caused error - I'm guessing maybe your using the beta visual editor.)

• I agree that the wording on the standard templates for using the sandbox does not always fit the case, but it is a standard part of many template responses.

• On a side note the (TW) parts on the end of both mine and Frze's revert messages indicate both were done with the inbuilt patrolling tool Twinkle and do things is a standard WP way.

• Reverts are part of WP, you should not take them so personally: Most editors make mistakes, most editors get reverted now and them, sometimes we get reverted wrongly or don't understand why and have to discuss.
• Assume good faith goes both ways, Frze assumed good faith on the problem caused, and it appears that it was a good faith edit by you, but you did not then assume good faith to the revert claiming terrorism and claims of ownership.

• In fact I have just been reverted - but rather than assume hostile intent, I checked and found they had reverted but also changed the filename to a valid copyrighted image - so I thanked them for it.
• I also have made accidental mistakes I haven't noticed, and luckily another editors have reverted, but I take it as my mistake for not checking the result. A revert is not a blame thing, or a claim of ownership, its the same as an edit, it's purpose is to improve the article.

• Lastly let me say again that I'm sorry that what is fairly standard procedure on WP you have taken personally and has appeared to upset you. Note that their are usually dozens of changes every minute 24/7/365 and in most minutes you'll find an act of deliberate or accidental vandalism, so those that patrol in its various forms use standard tools and templates to keep on top of things. I hope that you decide to continue to try to improve articles, but if you do it is likely that you will be reverted at some point - just remember that their could have been a good faith error caused by either yourself or the reverter; don't take it personally; just as you don't consider an article yours if you edit it, don't assume a revert is someone claiming ownership. Try to always assume good faith

All the articles to which I have made revisions have been identified as needing work and yet practically everyone has been reverted although I have such as in the area of plots establish what is said is a plot and not a storyline. And in some cases the revisions I made were reverted with words that I selected that better describe characters or situations lifted and placed into the old and usually longer plot that has been presented as a storyline. With respect to Chapter Two I had no ides as to there being anything wrong even when I ran the test for errors. There are examples listed in the talk pages of article about problems with articles and yet these are not revert or eliminate so just what purpose is it to revert revisions when there already exist within very old articles the need for revision? Not only that but if you use a template to notify people of your general action, i.e. revert and not the problem that prompted the action then you should not be using a template that essentially creates antagonism. If you have the experience involved in this activity then you should be aware of the long term implications of your actions and decisions. Yes, I realize that there are many revisions made but again, if currently there are articles that need work and they remain as such then who ever finds that there is a problem should notify the author of the revisions to indicate, beyond the "BOT" that there are problems. That does not seem to be part of the mentality of those that essentially through their acts of reverting act on behalf of Wikipedia. The "#" that appeared after my revisions are to be found in areas that I nothing with which to do with changes. The before and after screens show changes made by the person. By unilateral reverting without notification of what is wrong and with the template that uses the term sandbox can only be accepted as belittling the person. You should not be using it if what you intend to create is an atmosphere of inclusion instead of exclusion which is what because of this experience supported by that of other revisions seems to be with my experience so prevalent with Wikipedia. It seems far easier to have existing crap articles remain than actually revising the quality when it seems that any person that finds a difference of opinion about revisions. When I was presented with the reverting actions I never was told what was the problem just that what was done was of inconsequential value. When I respond to something with an understanding that it was done to what I had intended then what am I to think about reverting. Now, was the problem the changes made with replacement of programing with "#" or was the reverting due to content or format? You clearly say in the message send that it was basically inconsequential changes. You tell me just where is it that I am to get any inkling that there was not a problem of inconsequential revision but potentially a programing gliche. I am being told the reverting was for inconsequential revisions. The template you are using is not suitable, You, acting on behalf of Wikipedia which appears to be some level of authority conveyed upon you should have the experience and understanding just as to what impression is created by what is sent. So if crap can remain without issue then it seems appropriate to give some notification that there is something wrong in the revision and you have so much time to correct or the article will revert. This would seem particularly useful especially if inappropriate and antagonistic template responses are being used. When I select an article to potentially revise and add to I look to see what is there that can be said with fewer words, where is there redundancy within that article and auxiliary articles and in which should particular levels of information should be included instead of having extensive repeats in all the related articles. Taking something personal? What am I to think otherwise when I am not a robot yet treated to inflammatory template use. There was never any mention of what was wrong until I posted about article terrorism. Do you think that such a statement would be coming from a person that was reasonable and logical enough to deal with being told what was the problem, not that the changes were inconsequential? All I can say is that there is something missing here. And if you wish to fall back upon that there is so much that needs to be done in the usual functioning of Wikepedia then maybe your approach has some tweaking to be made.A1Houseboy (talk) 19:20, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

Houseboy, your edit was a mess, and you didn't take the time to look over what you had done to see that you had made a mess, and now you blame others for your error. I beg to differ with your assumption that I did not check my work. Do you honestly think that someone would forward a revision that included nothing but "#"? If so then you have beans for a brain. The "#" appeared in the coding as well which would have taken far more trouble than reasonable. Many of the productions listed are not notable, with no notable actors, no notable director, a producing theatre company that is not notable, etc. After the Broadway production is described, I would just say something like: "The play was revived in Seattle [3] and Toronto (both in 1981), again in Toronto (1996), in Minneapolis, Minnesota (2000) [4], at Cornell University by Risley Theatre (2001) [5], in Singapore (2003) [6] and at Trafalgar Studios in London, starring Alan Cumming as Max (2006). Joan McCracken

I've just considerably expanded the article on Joan McCracken, 1940s Broadway and film star and dancer. Problem is that there is only one good source, a biography from 2003. It's a very good and authoritative source, but I hate to base an entire article on one source. The problem is, except for obituaries of questionable reliability, I can't find much else. Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

English Renaissance theatre

Hello WikiProject Theatre members. I just wanted to introduce myself as a new Wikipedia contributor and to say I've added myself as a project member. My specific areas of interest/expertise are Elizabethan/Jacobean theatre, musical theatre and opera – I recently submitted a new article on Nathan Field's 1609/1610 play A Woman Is a Weathercock. The helpful editor who reviewed and accepted the article pointed me in the direction of the Theatre WikiProject. Once I've got my head round policies and conventions I'm happy to do as much as I can to help the project – and any advice will be gratefully received. I can see there was an Elizabethan theatre sub-project that is now defunct but I assume it's ok to look at the most obvious holes in the area and start helping to fill them.--Parasitaster (talk) 17:11, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

Need help on Ian Charleson Awards

These are very highly regarded, very prestigious theatre awards in the UK; however there is little publicity and no glitz (serious actors/theatre-goers actually prefer it that way and feel it adds to their greater legitimacy). Because of the low publicity, there is less information easily available about the awards as a whole (e.g., no official website). Also, the Sunday Times, which sponsors the awards, is behind a paywall. For all of these reasons, the Wikipedia article on the Ian Charleson Awards is greatly lacking -- much information is missing, and most of what is there is uncited. If anyone would like to help out with expanding the article, please help! Even just the basic information for many years is incomplete or missing. Any additions to the article would be greatly appreciated! It would also help if you have a subscription to The Times (I don't, currently), but it's not necessary because the award information is out there on the web in other more scattered places. I also just spent many hours cleaning up the format of the article, which was a mess. I'm not 100% convinced that the format I came up with is the best one, so other opinions on that are welcome, too. Belated followup: I managed to get a one-month subscription to The Times, and a three-day subscription to The Times' digital archive, and printed out all of the twice-yearly Sunday Times articles on these awards, and updated and corrected and expanded the Wikipedia article accordingly. Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. Not conversant with how to edit items, but am suggesting that the following minor corrections be considered for the Dylan Thomas: Under Milk Wood entry:

1. The date 1954 for Under Milk Wood: I understand this may be based upon the date of first publication, but I believe, since Thomas died in 1953, & was working on final fixes to the script at that time, that it is odd, really, to date it 1954, after the author had died. Why not simply date it 1953?

2. The article called t a radio play later adapted to the stage. In drafts of what would become the work, he had subtitled it "A Radio Play Perhaps?" But he jettisoned that reference well before his death, when he was still working on finishing touches. By that time he had changed the designation to "A Play for Voices." True, Thomas had a long history of working for the BBC, and he likely imagined it would be broadcast on radio. But the fact is that in his final months he participated inane supervised several public readings of the play, and he was about to embark on a cross-USA trip, during which he hoped to initiate more such public readings. So he clearly saw the work as much as not as a live performance genre, admitted of a somewhat confused genre identity. A new navbox

I made the following, after seeing Template:History of theatre. Then, I saw Template:Stagecraft Nav. So, should we trash this new navbox or keep it?

Dance theater

Whereas [[Dance theater]] redirects to Tanztheater, [[Dance theatre]] currently sends you to Concert dance. Neither page really covers the entire topic. As, for instance, in "Butoh is a form of Japanese dance theatre^hum..."

Thank you for bringing this up, 86 -- this has long been an issue of concern for me -- that is, the general state and lack of detail/diversity in our articles on concert dance, theatrical dance, musical theatre dance, broadway dance, jazz dance and so-forth. I made a personal review of the matter about two years back, but the major stumbling block holding back significant expansion in these areas (aside from editor involvement) was the poor state of the sources; dance just does not, as an art form, have the level of scholarship covering its historical and stylistic distinctions that some other visual and performing arts do. Sufficient sources are out there, but getting ahold of all of the right ones for all the right areas and distilling their salient points without original research will be a challenge. But as it happens, I am going to be trying to rejuvenate WP:WikiProject Dance soon, so I will try to make this a first order of business once we (hopefully) have more hands on deck. Hmm, yes....honestly the articles themselves seem to be a (non-obvious) fork. I think Tanztheater (and it's many good sources) should probably be merged into Concert dance, as part of a history section that describes the evolution of the latter. Unfortunately, Concert dance itself is very underdeveloped. I'm going to point both redirects to Concert dance (the parent topic and the one most users of en.Wikipedia would be looking for when referencing "dance theater", regardless of spelling) and then look into a merge when I do a general overview of this area, hopefully soon. Concert dance should be a massively larger article. Lambtron, you've provided us with a lot of good media for styles derived from concert dance; any chance you've got textual resources in this regard as well? Snow talk 20:48, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

Unfortunately I am rich in media and poor in textual resources. I have a sense of what these genres are and, to some extent, what differentiates them, but no sources that would enable me to write about them with authority. Afraid I don't have a source on Tanztheater at the moment, although I know of a good library nearby. (And thanks, Lambtron, I'm flattered!) I think the problem here is that Tanztheater is a particular artistic movement—drama+tragedy+pantomime+heavy makeup+Arnold Schoenberg—and "tanztheater" happens to be German for "Dance theatre", a British term for art dance in general. Given the broader applications of "dance theatre," I propose a WP:Hatnote on Concert Dance saying

"Dance theatre" and "Dance theater" redirect here. For the 20th-centrury German interdisciplinary style, see Tanztheater.

Well, Pina Bausch's usage of the term (as in de:Tanztheater Wuppertal [7]) has, I think, generally been referred to in English as "dance theater". I'm less sure about the 1930s expressionist Tanztheater genre from which she borrowed the term, though it is sometimes translated literally as "dance theater". (And Japanese butoh, I think, also has aesthetic links, internationally, to the Tanztheater tradition.)

However, the common usage of "dance theater" in English is, I think, largely independent (and closer perhaps to "concert dance"?). 2c, 86.134.203.235 (talk) 23:18, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

Good call on the hatnote and the transclusion. I find I'm in agreement with both of you on this; in German Tanztheater, as far as I've observed, can been used in the literal and general sense to refer to what English speakers would call concert dance, but typically has a more idiomatic meaning relating to a specific tradition in theater. In English, I think "dance theatre" (or "dance theater") would generally be thought to be analogous to "concert dance"; although, to my perception, "dance theatre" also seems warmer to styles like jazz, musical theatre/Broadway, and ballroom shows, whereas concert dance, while I think it works with any of those, is often used for contexts with dance that is more classically-derived: ballet, modern and contemporary. That's just an impressionistic generalization, mind you; could be when the sources are put together a different story is told, but that's the feel I've always gotten from people when they use it in general speech. No Obie lists?

It appears that there are as of yet no lists for either the Obie Award for Distinguished Performance by an Actor or the Obie Award for Distinguished Performance by an Ensemble. The only one which has been created is the Obie Award for Distinguished Performance by an Actress. This seems like a rather large oversight to me. Only one of the recent RMs to change (pornographic actress)s to (actress) succeeded but it's already been used for further undiscussed moves and non-admin close by one of two editors proposing the change. Use of categories that contain "Play" for musicals

Recently, Plain Jane Doe removed all categories that contained the word "play" in them from articles on musicals. Given such sources as The American Heritage Dictionary, which defines a musical as "A play or movie that contains musical numbers", I would say these categories certainly apply to musicals. Our own article on Musical theatre also cites reliable sources that define a musical as a "musical play where songs and dances are fully integrated into a well-made story with serious dramatic goals that is able to evoke genuine emotions other than laughter" (quoting the article, not the sources themselves). You can see an example of the removal of categories here: [8]. There are 25-30 such edits in total. I've asked Plain Jane Doe to stop removing those categories until a discussion on this concludes. Let me begin with this: User:BU Rob13 has yet to address the issue with User:IJVin concerning their vandalism in placing play category into musical category articles. I simply removed this vandalism. There's a reason why the Tony Awards have play categories and musical categories, because they are categorized differently.

If the issue is not addressed between the two mentioned users, a check user will need to confirm on the possibility of a sock between User:BU Rob13 and User:IJVin, who may be one and the same. --Plain Jane Doe (talk) 17:56, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

As I recommended before, read WP:NOTVANDALISM. A content dispute, which is more-or-less what this is, is not vandalism. I did not ping IJVin previously to avoid WP:CANVASSing. And thanks, the sockpuppetry accusation gave me a good laugh on an otherwise miserable day. I'd recommend restoring the categories immediately. Whatever the solution we should be able to select (for example) "Autobiographical X" category and it would include stage works, musical or not, that were autobiographical.

I fully agree with that. I'm going to revert those edits now, given the emerging consensus and the negative effect on navigation among theatre articles that the change is causing in the meantime. In some parts of the category tree there are indeed Musicals subcategories, which are nested appropriately. (I sometimes worry about operas subcategories elsewhere not being findable because they're not nested, but that's a bit of a tangent.) –Roscelese (talk ⋅ contribs) 03:40, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

I ran up against this a couple years ago when trying to cleanup categories for librettists, book writers, and composers, and there was no good solution for the play v. musical problem. To take one of the recent examples: If I want to change the Categorization of Matilda the Musical, I have to create Musicals Set in England, and from that I have to create Musicals set in the United Kingdom > Musicals by country of setting + Musicals set in Europe by country > Musicals by region of setting + Musicals set in Europe > Musicals by setting + Musicals by continent of setting. And that's just to set up a parallel tree for the geographic setting of the play--if I were doing A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, I'd have to do the same thing for the time component as well. Honestly, I wish *parts* of the category tree for Plays could be renamed Plays and Musicals just to make it easier. Aristophanes68 (talk) 22:03, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

Infobox for Non-Profit/ Commercial Theatre Companies

There currently exists an infobox for Theatre Groups, Theatre Festivals, and Stage Productions, but I think it would enhance the ease of inputting/ locating information if there were separate infobox entries for both Non-profit and commercial companies. In the Chicago theatre scene (as well as in NYC, to my knowledge) most theatres must eschew the use of infoboxes because there isn't one that fits theatre page-type. The current available company boxes on the List of Infoboxes also fail to provide the necessary information for these pages.

I'd like to open a dialogue on the creation of what information to provide for each.

Non-profit theatre companies should include basic information such as name, image, image size, founded date, location, and a website link but should include information pertinent to their specific structure: Artistic, Development, and Managing directors as well as the listing of notable members.

I don't have experience in the realm of commercial theatres, so perhaps someone else could speak to that? kstoffers (talk) 18:25, 18 August 2015 (UTC)

Should "Act 2" be capitalized?

I was changing "act 2, scene 1" etc. to "Act 2, Scene 1" in a few articles. It seems to me that "Act 2" is a proper name (though "act" is a common noun in "the second act"), just as "6th Street" is a proper name. But I received complaints from another editor. Should I stop making such changes? About 80% of the time "Act 2" is capitalized, and it seems to me desirable to have consistency. There appears to be less support for capitalizing "scene 1". Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Capital letters might be better, although this WikiProject should certainly be notified. The Chicago Manual of Style recommends "act 1, scene 3", but that's just, like, their opinion, man such manuals frequently disagree. FourViolas (talk) 04:22, 26 August 2015 (UTC)

Giles Leonard/Linnett Barrett??

I recently created Giles Leonard Barrett, a late 18th century English actor who came to America in the 1790s. Trying to link together his English career with his American, I stumbled across sources about "Giles Linnett Barrett" who seems to be the same person based on biographical details, e.g., [9] [10]. Any ideas why the middle name is different? There are drawings in the public domain of Giles "Linnett" Barrett which I'll add to the article once I erase any doubts that these are the same person. Also a fun fact about Barrett, he performed once for U.S. President John Adams, who disliked the play he saw (for political reasons), and said "My friend, General Warren was a scholar and a gentleman, but your author has made him a bully and a blackguard." Another Language Performing Arts Company

I added the WikiProject theatre banner to Another Language Performing Arts Company because the article is listed in Category:Theatre companies in Utah. I'm wondering if anyone in this WikiProject has heard of this group and can help determine whether is satisfies WP:ORG. I Googled "Another Language Performing Arts Company", but didn't find much more than social media pages or other trivial mentions. Most of the information seems to have been added by a couple of SPAs, including one who is claiming to be a cofounder of the group. Hello. There is a resource for theater fans called Show-Score.com. Like Rotten Tomatoes for movies or TripAdvisor for hotels, Show-­Score organizes information about all New York theater productions, ​from Broadway to Off­-Off-­Broadway, including cast information, showtimes and trailers. It collates all professional reviews for each production and generates an aggregate score for every show. It is also an online community for theater lovers and invites members to share their own reviews. Show-Score is the only site where you can find professional and fan reviews, production information, and ticketing information all in one place. Since I work for Show-Score, there is a clear conflict of interest in regards to me taking action on any Wiki pages, but I thought I’d bring Show-Score to your attention to be used as an external resource. We would also appreciate being considered as source in the “Critical Reception” section of individual show articles or in the footnote section of individual show show articles, like Kinky Boots. We've been covered by The New York Times, ABC News and several other media outlets. Further, Show-Score contains reviews of Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway shows that aren't always covered by sites like Playbill and/or BroadwayWorld. Further, while Playbill and BroadwayWorld have review round-ups, Show-Score has more information and a larger number of reviews than either of these sources. For "Hamilton," Playbill and BroadwayWorld each contain 20 reviews, whereas Show-Score has 52 critic reviews and nearly 1500 member reviews. We are a growing community of over 30,000 registered users and our aim is to be the largest repository of Broadway information for theater lovers. Notability for a play

Hi there, I'm not a member of WP:Theatre, but today created an article for the play If Love Were All (play). Only after I created it did I realize that I'm not sure what are the notability guidelines for this project. Personally I feel it's notable for being a play written by a woman and produced by an all-woman team (the playwright and her partner) - in 1931. But since the author wrote under a male pseudonym, none of the few writings on the play talk about this. Could I state it (unless that's original research)? • Hey Kosboot, I am not a formal member either, but I've seen you around and think you already have a good feel for notability of plays. My guess is that about every play that makes a decent Broadway theatre has a good claim for notability. (Look at the sourcing I pulled up for the one-month run of dreck like The Kaffir Diamond!) Short runs (like this one), after 1923 (when little commentary on it is readily online), could be tougher, but if sources show it meets WP:GNG, that seems fine. This one looks fine to me. As for the author & producing team, it seems OK to cite those facts since they can be proven, though the lack of other sources saying it is notable for those reasons means I personally wouldn't factor that in too much in deciding whether its notable, but it could certainly influence my decision (as it probably did yours) to write the article in the first place.--Milowent • ^hasspoken 13:28, 17 March 2016 (UTC)

Agree with Milowent that overall notability should not be a problem for most 20th-century Broadway plays, and clearly not for this one with coverage in the Times, Variety, etc. There are also a variety of books that document Broadway plays in this period, and quick Google Books search suggests this play is covered in several of them. As far as the pseudonym goes, the Internet Broadway Database is considered a reliable source, and it confirms that "Hatch" was Morgan. So the factual point is no problem. But if you want to discuss the significance of the author being a woman, you will need some source(s) that cover that in particular. --RL0919 (talk) 16:29, 17 March 2016 (UTC)

Plays with over 100 performances

• Anyone aware of source that readily lists all Broadway plays with over 100 performances? I've enjoyed digging up old plays like The County Chairman (play) (1903, 222 perf.) to write articles about, but this has been a random process. Cheers.--Milowent • ^hasspoken 13:28, 17 March 2016 (UTC)

I don't know of a source that lists only the ones with a particular number of performances, but there are reference works that document Broadway plays. If you want to be systematic, you could pick a time period and/or genre, and likely there is a book covering it. If your interests hit time periods before 1930, I guarantee you will find more opportunities than you have time to write. I've found a number of big hits from that era (e.g., Within the Law (play), The Gold Diggers (play), and Nellie, the Beautiful Cloak Model) that did not have articles. Personally, I've found it interesting just to wind my way through the careers of different people and see which of their works are missing. A single prolific producer or writer can generate a list of dozens of potential articles. --RL0919 (talk) 22:27, 17 March 2016 (UTC)

Writing about plays

Are there any guidelines for writing about plays, on the lines of the "article structure" section of Wikipedia:WikiProject_Books or Wikipedia:WikiProject Academic Journals/Writing guide?

An article on a possibly non-notable play Orange Flower Water is being re-created with long list of original cast and crew and very detailed synopsis, where there is actually more encyclopedia information at the section on the playwright's page at Craig Wright (playwright)#Pine City plays to which it has been redirected a couple of times. Miscategorisation at The Threepenny Opera

Would any active members please take a look at Talk:The Threepenny Opera. This musical has been miscategoried as an "opera" for a long time. Even the opera-source, Grove says that it's a musical. In the list of "Operas, Operettas, Musicals and Ballets", it is described as "play with music". (Grove 1980 v.20, 309). The arguments against calling it an opera are that, as the image in the article states unambiguously, as does the lede, that it is a "play with music", or a musical. The categorisation in place is OR. A search on Youtube for recordings offers a common-sense based definition as well. No one who has actually experienced the work imagines it's an opera. Our article ought not to mislead its readers with a false categorisation, regardless of a Wikiproject's (false) sense of ownership. IMDB is deleting its message boards in a couple of weeks

IMDB is deleting its message boards, and all of the content therein. The deletion will be on February 20, but it's not clear what time zone, so I would err on the conservative side and say February 19th (or 18th in case they mean zero hour Feb 20). If there is data or information on any threads on any IMDB message boards you wish to save, make copies now. (It seems the actual data pages for films and people will remain, but any and all message boards will be deleted.) On some of the boards I see a petition being floated to stop the deletion; if you feel strongly about it you could look into signing that. Softlavender (talk) 06:45, 4 February 2017 (UTC)

Talk:Konstantin Stanislavski/GA1 - Looking for some help

The GA nominator/article-editor of Konstantin Stanislavski has not edited Wikipedia since this past September. I am attempting a Review of this article but I cannot edit it or fix its issues because that would, of course, be a WP:COI. Am hoping that a WikiProject Theatre participant would be willing to step in and fix this article up so we can work together and I can then complete my Review. The article is fairly massive and I just realized that I could get done with my going through all of its many parts only to be unable to complete my review... @Shearonink: Please note that the nominator (DionysosProteus) tends to come and go and can be absent for long stretches before returning to edit. Since the article was nominated back in September I would guess they have simply become busy IRL in the interval until the review was finally opened. You could either just keep the article on hold until they pop back up, or fail the article and encourage them to renominate immediately when they are available again. Either way your review will not be wasted. I also see they have email enabled, so you could try emailing them to ask whether they are likely to have time to address the review within whatever timeframe you consider reasonable. I'd offer to help but I lack both the time and expertise to be of much help with Stanislavski.

However, having scanned quickly through your review as it stands, I have to say, these do not appear to be problems that would necessarily fail the article under the GA criteria. Stuff to fix, yes, but the GA criteria are really not all that strict (unlike FA; compare GA criteria 1 "well written" with FA criteria 1 "brillian prose"). See, for instance, WP:WGN; GA articles are "decent articles", not "great articles". You may want to consider just passing the article even absent fixes for these, if no more substantive problems show up. And also keep in mind that WP:COI as a policy addresses editing articles about yourself or where you have have some personal stake in the article's subject. There is no general prohibition on GA reviewers editing nominated articles to fix problems they find (within reason; you can't review an article you have "edited significantly"); there just isn't any requirement that they do so. --Xover (talk) 15:05, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

@Xover: Thank you for your thoughts on this. I agree, am not finding anything egregious enough to fail. This article is probably one of the biggest ones I have ever attempted to review but it has been a pleasure to read, even at the depth I have been having to do as part of my GA-Review readthrough. I always try to give the nom/article-creator as much time as they need to take care of any issues that I do find. I hesitate to fix any of the somewhat-minor things I have found because I am participating in the GA Cup and don't want to have any appearances of a COI. I think I might ask the Cup Judges if I can do so without running afoul of any possible COIs with the Cup. Shearonink (talk) 17:51, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

If the items you have raised thus far are the extent of your concerns, then I agree that these are not things that should stop a GA promotion. If you just need someone to help with minor cleanup to avoid conflict with GA Cup requirements, I'm willing to help with items like removing a dablink or rewording some confusing sentences. @Shearonink: Since the GA Cup awards points for reviews and not for closing nominations (pass or fail), I feel pretty confident they don't care whether you help fix problems in the article. For the GA process in general (the GA Cup is an independent initiative to reduce the backlog in the main GA process) the guidance for reviewers is to avoid reviewing articles that you have "edited significantly" (which would be a pretty high bar for this article), and that's mainly intended to avoid various scenarios where you have edited the article prior to its nomination. I've never seen or heard of any problems with a reviewer helping to fix an article they're reviewing (except that the nominator might be irritated by it, which I don't think would be a concern here). Anyways, if you're uncomfortable or uncertain about it you should certainly check with the GA and/or GA Cup communities, but I don't think you need to worry about it. --Xover (talk) 18:20, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

Site-specific theatre

Plenty of material could be added on history of site-specific theatre as well as connected theory. In particular, Mike Pearson's text Site-Specific Performance should be referenced, along with its bibliography of readings. A link or reference to the term “site-specific performance” would also be useful, which now currently is directed immediately to "site-specific art." A discussion of the distinction between site-specific theatre, site-specific art, and site-specific performance would also be helpful, especially as the term "performance" is utilized within both the theatre and visual art communities. • Abishe, you need to ensure that any theatre/cinema articles you are considering creating meet the basic requirements under WP:GNG. Don't just cut and paste information directly from the company's website, such as you did at Savoy Cinema (Sri Lanka), which is not only a breach of copyright but is also not an independent reliable source. IOBDB changed its URLs -- please help with cleanup

The Lortel Archives recently changed its URL addresses, and so all of our IOBDB links have gone dead. All the pages using the IOBDB templates have been placed into Category:Pages using a generic version of Template:iobdb. So, Wikipedia needs help to clean up 1,300 IOBDB dead links, and an admin has broken the links in order to create error messages and attract clean-up. Please help us. Here is the procedure: If you're looking for a specific person (say, Franklin Underwood, you'd end up here). To fix it, go to the Lortel search page here, put in his name and search. On the next screen, click on the red link to his name, and that will bring you to his listing. Get his ID number from the address bar at the top (25087), and copy it. Then go to his Wikipedia article and change the {{iobdb}} template to {{iobdb name|25087}}. For a venue, you'd use {{iobdb venue}}, and for a specific production you'd use {{iobdb title}}, all with the same procedure. Ssilvers, for the umpteenth time, I did not break the links. Lortel changed their URL scheme, and so every link on every page was broken. None of the extant usage is broken at the moment because I fixed the templates, but they are not pointing to the best URLs. I would appreciate it if you stopped trying to paint me as an evil villain. Help/eyes needed

Lemaroto (talk · contribs) has been edit-warring at length on Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat to change the infobox entries contrary to the style guidelines of this project. Moreover, the user has a long history, going back to August 2013, of frequent talkpage warnings about edit-warring and disruptive editing [11], which he always removes. He also leaves no edit summaries, or (now) misleading edit summaries. Could people put that article on their watch lists and help revert as appropriate? I don't want to breach 3RR. Thanks. Can someone find a way to improve Theatre of Zambia? It was kept in AFD discussion with everyone clamoring for notability, but not a soul wanted to add a single thing to the article, and it's still in horrible shape. Apparently closing an AFD as "keep" magically adds sources to the article somehow. If this is a notable subject, then can someone please add on it? Hi! I have a student (Paulochiossi) who recently created an article, Theatre for Young Audiences. This looks like it's the same thing as children's theater (and if so, then it needs to be moved to this title), which doesn't seem to have an article on Wikipedia as it instead redirects to the main page for theatre. The article is fairly basic and can definitely use some overall TLC from people familiar with children's theater who are willing to expand this to add in more about its overall history and other things specific to it. Sheringham Little Theatre

Sheringham Little Theatre is an article that's getting little attention from regular users. A host of ever changing IPs that seem to be used by people connected with the theater are frequently adding in advertising/POV language to the article to promote the theater. Over the last 6 or so months I've been trying to respond to it and keep it as neutral as possible, but the IPs keep returning to change it to their liking. Could I ask that others take a look at it and make it more appropriate/neutral, and that you further watchlist it to help monitor going forward? Additionally, I've started a section on its talk page to discuss the youth section that the IPs keep adding in which is primarily just a list of shows the children's theater program has put on. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Gaslight (play)

I've initiated a request to move the article about Patrick Hamilton's 1938 Victorian-era thriller from Gaslight (play), its most popular current title, to Gas Light (play), the title by which the play was copyrighted and originally performed. The article was moved from Gas Light only recently, after being created as Angel Street, one of the U.S. titles given to the play after its premiere in London. The article was moved to Gas Light (play) in 2006. In 2007 it was moved to simply Gas Light. I examined the documentation for Template:Infobox play, hoping that a method for displaying alternative titles was part of the mix, but I find it is not. @Softlavender: I do not think this topic meets Wikipedia's WP:NOTABILITY criteria.

However, this is a systemic problem Wikipedia needs to address. Beyond you raising this issue I am seeing growing interest in talking about this. Excessive listing of non-notable Theatrical appearances

At Sally Struthers, there seems to be an ever-increasing (almost COI) listing of non-notable theatrical appearances for this BLP's summer stock, especially at the Ogunquit Theater. I know at other articles on WP such as a song - when lists of covers become undue weight - they need to be scrubbed and only include substantial notable listings. At present, this BLP article reads like a resume - the television section is merely a copy of her IMDB (which is already listed), and her filmography lists films that are not even WP linked. I would like to go in and clean these sections - reducing them to partial / notable mentions - and set a consensus (precedent). WikiJournal of Humanities published first article

The WikiJournal of Humanities is a free, peer reviewed academic journal which aims to provide a new mechanism for ensuring the accuracy of Wikipedia's humanities, arts and social sciences content. We started it as a way of bridging the Wikipedia-academia gap. It is also part of a WikiJournal User Group along with Wiki.J.Med and Wiki.J.Sci. The journal is still starting out and not yet well known, so we are advertising ourselves to WikiProjects that might be interested.

Pageants

I have written several articles on women involved with early 20th century theatrical pageants (Glenna Smith Tinnin, Hazel MacKaye). I may eventually try to produce an article on them, but it would be better if someone with some actual theater history chops would do it. These were not beauty pageants, these were theatrical productions with elaborate costumes, sometimes hundreds of participants, and very popular. Anybody game? The "Stub" ranking needs updating. The article has been updated to include history, productions, awards and nominations, and numerous citations. I think the page deserves a "C" or a "B" ranking, but I'm an intern right now and I think the last person to make major changes was also an intern (source: my boss), so I'd rather someone else make that edit. Mikechase3 - Done. It is certainly more than a Stub and I'm sure one could argue for B rather than C. But I'll let someone more knowledgeable as to theatre make that call. If I had a small criticism, some of the language is a little peacocky; "It received a lot of attention", "successful productions", "the rising success of Jermyn Street Theatre", "praised revivals", "innovative adaptations", "outstanding musicals". 100% Assessed, Working on "Needs Attention"

As of this writing, 100% of the 20,000+ pages tagged for this project have an assessment for both quality and importance. That's not to claim that all of those assessments are current and accurate, but there is at least a starting point to help anyone who wants to target particular classes of articles for improvement (such as B-class articles that might be improved to GA/FA, or high-importance stub/start articles that could be expanded). Next up, I'm looking at the articles in Category:Theatre articles needing attention, many of which were tagged years ago with no particular reason explained. I wanted to let this project know that I am uploading a few thousand new public-domain images to Commons that might be useful to you. The images come from the collection of J. Willis Sayre and were digitized by the University of Washington. They date from the first quarter of the 20th century and are largely portrait shots of various people involved in theater, film, and other media at that time, and shots of scenes from plays and films.

You can make use of these images in articles, and we also need help categorizing them on Commons.

Associating a director with non-directoral theatre awards?

Hello all, I was discussing Moritz von Stuelpnagel with Worldbruce on my talk page and neither of us is sure whether it's appropriate for the page to list so many non-directoral Tony Awards - see the bottom three paragraphs of the Biography section, which lists a number of awards for plays he directed. The question is whether it's normal to list the awards won by a play he directed, even if he wasn't named on the awards, or whether that's more like claiming importance by association. In reviewing the Biography section as directed, I wouldn't use the word "appropriate" in regards to this style of content writing when it comes to encompassing multi-awarded shows. I would say: "necessary". That question - "Is it necessary" falls under the importance of such information regarding the subject, or is it just "filler" to make the subject seem more notable. In looking at this particular article / subject, I would say much of this article is filler and unnecessary. These lines: "Kline went on to win a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play, as well as a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Play, for his performance in Present Laughter" and "McTeer was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play" are definitely "unnecessary." Also, the list of works should be scrubbed to only those that are WP linked and notable, and actually mention the subject in the link. So, in answer to your question: no - it is not necessary to "lists a number of awards for plays he directed." IMHO Maineartists (talk) 14:29, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Blocking (stage) - articles and interlanguage links organization

Blocking (stage) is apparently the subset of direction relative to actor placement. (I am not entirely sure how it does not fall under the more general term of choreography, to which it could conceivably be merged, but I am not an expert by any means.) It is linked to this wikidata item with interlanguage links to fr:Didascalie, it:Didascalia, which cover a different thing - text indications from the author (or editor), covering not only actor placement but also emotional state, unspoken actions, etc. Note that we have an article didascaly but it's a dictionary definition (the #2 meaning is very close to the meaning of the French term).

The wikidata item also links to de:Regieanweisung, which is apparently the subset of the text indications (de:Nebentext) that refer to actor placement. It is also redirected from de:Bühnenanweisung (literally "stage instruction"). I thus believe it to be somewhat intermediary between the staging and didascalie/didascalia concepts.

In my opinion the thing to do would be breaking up the current wikidata item into:

• one about indications in the text of a play - including fr:Didascalie, it:Didascalia, de:Nebentext (currently a redirect to de:Haupttext, the other part of the text), possibly linking to no en-wp articles if didascaly is an obscure term in that language
• one about choreography - possibly simply [13].

Edward Bond is low-importance?

A number of writers have referred to Bond as one of the greatest living British playwrights. The Independent‘s Lynne Walker also wrote in 2005 that in France he is the most performed playwright after Molière. I think that the page on him should be classed as Mid-Importance. "Broadway Theatre People" break-up

I am in the process of removing people from the Category "Broadway Theatre People" and putting them into hopefully more useful subcategories like "Broadway actor", "Broadway theatre director", etc. This was suggested when the original category had a deletion discussion several years ago, and it seemed reasonable to me - it is large, and didn't seem as useful as it could be. I have so far been dropping the few playwrights who have made it into that category, because plays can be produced anywhere, and it is sometimes hard to say when something was written for Broadway. I think I should probably do the same with Broadway composers and lyricists, for the same reasons (again, there were few of them in the original "Broadway theatre people" category anyways). I'm not certain about that, though, since "Broadway composer" certainly seems like a recognizable idea. Anyways, if anyone would like to help or has thoughts, feel free. • Update: This is basically done at this point. It looks like the original "Broadway theatre people" category was mostly actors, but a number of other types of Broadway people had gotten mixed in due to the vague name. Should the page "Edward Bond" still be Start-Class?

I think that this article should (partly due to my edits earlier in the year) be ranked higher than Start-Class, and that it meets the C-Class criterion: "The article is substantial but is still missing important content or contains much irrelevant material. The article should have some references to reliable sources, but may still have significant problems or require substantial cleanup." (I am now focused on other editing efforts and thus I probably won't edit the page on Bond anytime soon, but I'm posting about the class because it came to mind as I was revisiting the talk page for the page on Bond.) Farce needs eyes

Farce is a "top importance" article for this project but has been reduced to a stub by removal of its list items with comment "Removing entirely unsourced list - a list of works is not valuable to this page, and the list was built up entirely without sources to explain any rationale for inclusion. Feedback on bio of Allen Lee Hughes

I submitted a a draft article on Allen Lee Hughes earlier this fall. I recently got feedback that sources lacked significant coverage. I added some more sources and I think the draft is comparable to articles about designers of similar status like Jane Greenwood and Paul Tazewell. I do have a conflict of interest, but as Hughes is the only African American to be nominated for a Tony Award for Lighting Design, I think he certainly qualifies under notability guidelines for living people. One thing you might do is to quote from the secondary sources about her and her productions. While this isn't necessary to establish her notability for inclusion, it can only help. Linking the articles as references is good but incorporating the content into the prose (with attribution) is even better. There is a current project running in New Zealand funded by the Wikimedia Foundation to increase content on Performing Arts in Aotearoa / New Zealand. Shaw Festival

Hi! I don't really know much about theatre so I was hoping someone who was could give me a second opinion here. There's some more background at Talk:Shaw Festival, but the gist is that I thought it sounded kind of more like an ad than an encylopedia article. I think there's a potential for the article to get in much better shape as independant/reliable sources seem to exist, even if the article mostly cites primary sources at the moment. User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Requesting peer review of theater article which appears to be overly detailed

An Admin suggested that I bring this to the attention of the Project. A few days ago, I was patrolling Recent Changes when I noticed a large amount of detail had been added to New Victory Theater. Is this level of detail normal?   –Skywatcher68 (talk) 14:46, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

Involved comment, as I am the editor who added this text to the article. It is worth noting that the prose size of this article is about 40,000 bytes (specifically, 40250 characters (6534 words) "readable prose size"). This is within the limit proscribed by WP:SIZERULE, which says that an article may need to be divided above 50,000 prose bytes and "almost certainly should be divided" above 100,000 prose bytes.

All active theaters listed on List of Broadway theaters (with one exception) have this level of detail, as do many former Broadway theaters, such as this one. To my knowledge, the largest Broadway theater articles are Studio 54 (46584 characters (7621 words) "readable prose size")) and New Amsterdam Theatre (46031 characters (7471 words) "readable prose size"). Anyone is welcome to weigh in on whether some specific details may need to be cut, but in all cases, I think the history of the theater justifies the added reading material. Quality articles about West End theaters, such as Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and Her Majesty's Theatre, also have a similar level of detail. – Epicgenius (talk) 14:17, 27 September 2022 (UTC)

This is simply false; likely the text has been mangled by a vandal or prankster:

An accurate statement would say:

There is a discussion over at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Actors_and_Filmmakers about when it is appropriate to add an upcoming stage production (e.g., play or musical) to a table in a "Stage performances" (or similarly named section) in a performer's biography. This could also apply to notable persons in non-performing roles (e.g., director, choreographer, etc.). In December 2022, I added (underlined): his first stage appearance was in a sketch called The Unfailing Instinct at the Brighton Hippodrome in August 1925. He tripped and fell on his face during the performance. Today, a user removed these 10 words with the edit summary: trimming unencyclopaedic trivia.

Donald Spoto's 1941 biography (page 44): After four weeks on tour with this trifle in Manchester, Liverpool and Brighton, his salary of two pounds was slightly augmented when he was asked to be assistant stage manager and play the silent policeman in a melodrama, The Ghost Train, in which ‘Miller had scored a great success in London. No such success was Olivier’s: the Brighton drama correspondent alluded to him only to note his unintentionally dramatic entry onstage.. Heedless of the stage manager’s warning about the set’s raised doorsill, Olivier reduced a tense scene to giddy farce as he tripped, sliding precariously toward the footlights. He fared no better in his next employment..." Anthony Holden's 1947 biography (page 326): Twenty-two years his junior, Joan Plowright was young enough to be Olivier's daughter, precisely the role she played at the Palace Theatre, taking over the part of Jean Rice from Dorothy Tutin....Though she too was married - to the actor Roger Gage - there followed a "euphoric" progress through Glasgow, Edinburgh and Oxford to the Brighton Hippodrome - the scene of Olivier's first professional stage entrance, flat on his face, over thirty years before." John Cottrell's 1975 biography (page 34): "That summer Olivier made his first professional stage appearance since leaving drama school, and he literally fell flat on his face. The occasion was a sketch called Unfailing Instinct, put on as a curtain- raiser before a Brighton Hippodrome production of Arthur Ridley's new play The Ghost Train. Again and again the eighteen-year-old novice had been warned about the importance of lifting his feet as he came on stage via a door built into the scenery on a wooden base. It made not a dime's worth of difference. On the cue for his entrance he stumbled stupidly into the base of the door frame and plunged head- first into the footlights with sufficient impact to earn his first, brief notice as a pro: "Mr. Laurence Olivier made a good deal out of a rather small part." Francis Beckett's 2005 biography (page 16): "[His first performance was also] one of the most dramatic: he fell headlong, his face coming to rest in the footlights. There was a torrent of laughter from the packed house, and when he eventually left the stage, they gave him a round of applause." Terry Coleman's 2006 biography (Pages 25, 485): "The first time he appeared on stage as an actor, in public, was at the Brigthon Hippodrome at a charity gala at the beginning of August 1925, and it was in music hall, and he fell flat on his face...Olivier was in the one straight act of the evening, a short curtain-raising sketch called The Unfailing Instinct."" It's also mentioned prominently in this New York Times review of Olivier's 1985 Autobiography Confessions of an Actor: "In 1925 he made his first appearance on a professional stage, on a variety bill in Brighton, and he made his entrance by tripping over the sill of a door in the scenery. He sailed through the air right into the footlights, and the accident provoked the largest laugh he has ever received in his life as an actor."

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. The Poor of New York v.s. The Streets of New York (play)

Hi all. I just came across The Poor of New York while researching on creating an article on the 1913 silent film The Streets of New York which is based on the play by Dion Boucicault. I noticed the play article did not even mention the alternative title of the work, "The Streets of New York", which in googling looks like it has been published under that title as well as performed under that title. I therefore created a redirect at The Streets of New York (play) and added it to the disambiguation page at The Streets of New York. I also created a The Poor of New York#Film adaptations section where you will notice all film adaptations have used the title "The Streets of New York". I also found an NYT review of a recent production title, The Streets of New York, which appears to be a musical adaptation. Ultimately, my question in all of this is, what article title should we use? It appears the play has been published under both titles. The Poor of New York is the original title, but all the adaptations use The Streets of New York and it looks like contemporary stagings use this title as well. I'm fine leaving it as is, but it's possible users might be more likely to search for the play under the title "The Streets of New York". Thoughts?4meter4 (talk) 18:51, 11 June 2023 (UTC)

I'm working on editing the Three Act Page

I've been researching for books and history of the Three Act structure so I can fix that page, but the thing is the history of it coincides almost one to one with the Five-act structure. I'm not sure how to proceed. Should the Five Act structure redirect to three act, or should it have a new title?

The contents I'd propose has things like the myths of the Three Act structure, the rise of structuralism with plot, as suggested by Barthes, and the figures that actually pout it together--which is not Aristotle, but more a misunderstanding of Aristotle. I do have sources (primary) for all of it, so it's not original research. But often Three act and Five act are almost lockstep with each other as saw, someone like Kenneth Row, who argued roughly for Five Act, shows up in Three Act arguements. And the person who coined "inciting incident" (as a phrase). Refers to three act, but then it shows up in the Five act structure as well.

So any advice about how to get this to work would really help.
