Message from Ganymead

I started this page in late May of this year and I have been conspicuously absent. My apologies, I took an unexpected break from Wikipedia for a little over three months, but I have returned. *flourish, trumpets* This page hasn't really changed much. We have produced some nice templates (thanks Yossarian!) and have added a few items to the action items list. Personally, since my return, I have been hard at work on Category:Theatre, rearranging, moving and generally trying to clean the category. However, I established this page with a purpose (actually there's a whole list of them on the main page) and I would like to see some of those goals attained. Ok, so we have a page, some members, now what? First off, I'd like to see some more activity on this page.

Let me share some of my ideas and I'd like to hear any suggestions you may have.

• Creating a theatre portal.
• Theatre Collaboration of the Week (or some amount of time). If we have people participating, this can be a marvelous way of improving article quality and bringing them up to FA status.
• Some type of collaboration with some of the other WikiProjects such as WikiProject Broadway and WikiProject New York Theatre. This could include a variety of collaborative efforts.
• I would like to add a new goal of establishing notabilty guidelines for theatre articles. Many these would cover actors, playwrights and other theatre personnel; plays and dramatic works; and theatres and theatre companies. There doesn't appear to be much of a problem now, but I forsee that in the future some issues may arise and having guidelines will be helpful.

And finally, we need some nominations for the Tillie Blobbs Theatre Award. For the time being, lets put our nominations here. I shall eventually create a separate page for the award and nominations.

History of Western Theatre Series and Asian Theatre Series

I was hunting around Wikipedia and found a marvelous Infobox for the History of Architecture series. I took the infobox apart and created one for the History of Western Theatre and Asian Theatre Series infoboxes. Of course quite a few articles will have to be created and/or worked on before these boxes can be launched. The boxes can be seen here Infoboxes. List of LORT Member Theatres

Well, I personally am working on the List of LORT Member Theatres and am wanting to make sure that every LORT Theatre has at least a decent stub. Plays Infobox

I created a plays infobox (based on the films infobox) that can be used on play articles: Template:Infobox_Play. It doesn't have much at the moment, I'm just using it for some ancient greek plays I've been working on. If any of you would like to use it or help improve upon it, go right ahead. Here's an example in an article: Cyclops (play)

Articles for the Wikipedia 1.0 project

Hi, I'm a member of the Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team, which is looking to identify quality articles in Wikipedia for future publication on CD or paper. We recently began assessing using these criteria, and we are looking for A-Class and good B-Class articles, with no POV or copyright problems. Can you recommend any suitable articles on theatre? Defibrillation for WikiProject Theatre

It has seemed that little has actually happened here in the almost year that this project has been in existance. So, I will try one final time to resuscitate this WikiProject. I think some good work has happened. There is still, of course, a lot to do. Because the scope of Theatre is so large, I think we need a way of focusing the efforts of individual contributors on more specific areas. As an example, I've been doing some work on technical theatre, where there is actually a lot of activity, but I think that the area needs a bit more co-ordination. I agree. If you have a clean organized list of projects, perhaps divided by topic - I think you might see more involvement here. I think I've made a lot of progress on the ancient Greek plays the last couple months. If you'd like, I can compile a wishlist to post here of what kind of things they still need. Also, I think getting the theatre box on the discussion pages would help more people find this project. Thanks for your responses. I'm glad to know someone has taken up the banner of Greek theatre. You may also wish to check out the Theatre Article Assessment and add Greek playwrights, plays, etc. to the lists. I have decided to create a few smaller WikiProjects to concentrate on specific areas of theatre. I'm hoping to roll out WikiProject Elizabethan Theatre very soon. Certainly a project for Greek Theatre should also be created. This way, theatre can be taken in a bite sized chunk. Once I finish filling in the text, I'll post the possible new WikiProject here for all to review before it officially is launched. Naming convention for stage production articles

If I want to create The Trail of the Lonesome Pine '''(stage production)''', is that the correct parenthetical designation? Would "stage" or "theatre" be preferred? I bow to your collective wisdom. Her Pegship 16:10, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

This an article on the play "Trail of the Lonesome Pine" or the outdoor production? For the play the convention would follow that it would be called "Trail of the Lonesome Pine (play)". Is an "outdoor production" not a play? (It would indeed be about the outdoor production.) Would you mind giving me a clue on the differences between "play", "theatrical production", "stage production"? Thanks so much - Her Pegship 17:11, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

Play: the written script. Production: a particular theatrical performance of that play. So for example Hamlet is a play, but there have been lots of different productions of it over the last few centuries. My guess is that your article will be on the play, rather than a specific production of it. Is that right? The Singing Badger 17:34, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

Crediting Casts

I asked this at the Musical Theatre Talk page first, but that was before I found this

As the IBDB provides a wealth of information regarding casts, as well as writers and directors, would it be appropriate to begin carrying the information over?

For example, I was browsing the site and came upon the page for The Crucible. I was dissapointed to find that the original cast was not listed there. I found the information listed on IBDB, and was considering carrying it over, but then I remembered the rules regarding copyright infringment. Is it acceptable to carry that kind of information over, if IBDB is listed as a source for information?

It would be one more step towards having the largest collection of theatre information on the internet.

That information is not copyrightable, therefore it is perfectly acceptable to transfer the information. Though, certainly with a well-known play such as The Crucible, only the information from the most notable productions should be included. In situations where there are only a few notable actors then you may simply say that such-and-such and such-and-such led a cast directed by so-and-so. Non Naturlistic theatre

Has anyone considered putting information about the styles of non naturalistic theatre on wikipedia? I for one would like to see it part of this project, as it seems to be an important and influential part of modern theatre.

WikiProject Musicals

WikiProject Broadway has recently been renamed WikiProject Musicals. Since the project has moved beyond the scope of simply New York Theatre, I think it would probably be a good idea to move it as a descendent of WikiProject Theatre. Theatres in England

User:Modernmille has added at least 50-60 stubs on theatres in England. These are one-line articles that don't assert any notability of anything of the like. In fact, most of them are the same stub, just with different names, cities, and seating capacities. Would anyone be willing to take a look at some of these and try to make good articles out of them? British theatre actor database

I'm looking for a British equivalent of the IBDB, a sort of IMDB for stage shows an stage actors in the UK. Can anyone recommend anything here? Any help is greatly appreciated. Westport Country Playhouse

Woot. I have joined WikiProject Theatre. I've been working avidly on Westport Country Playhouse in an attempt to make it a featured article. I have access to boatloads of information on it. Unfortunately, after comparing it with Abbey Theatre, I realize most of the information I've added is nothing like that featured article's information. If any of you'd like to review it or just give me some advice, I'd be ever grateful.

Theater terms

Theater terms is bad, and there doesn't seem to be any connection between it and this WikiProject. Given that theatre has its own language, this page should be good.

I've moved it to List of theatre terms, and I've begun to change the format used.

Production and Cast information

I'm not a project member, but have been adding a little content to a few theatre articles.

Is there a standard format for cast lists and production lists? Should there be? At the moment it seems like articles have all kinds of different structures.

Kabuki actors

Hi all. I've been working on Kabuki-related subjects for a short while, and now I am officially joining your Project. Do any of you work significantly on Asian theatre?

Just wanted to mention that, after a brief discussion with the guys over at WikiProject Japan, we've agreed that, for now at least, all Kabuki actors should be named in the traditional Japanese way. E.g. Nakamura Kanzaburō, not Kanzaburō Nakamura. It can get a bit iffy, as a number of modern kabuki actors have also been in film, TV, and Western-style theatre; their names may be more well-known among certain crowds by the Western order. I can't imagine this will be a problem with you all, but I thought it'd be proper to mention it. Thanks. LordAmeth 10:10, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

Mime artist, Pantomime, etc.

Could someone with this project take a look at the situation with the mime/pantomime articles? It is currently quite a mess. Here's what I saw:

• Pantomime ({{mergefrom}} request from The British Pantomime)
  • Talk:Pantomime (redirect to Talk:Pantomime (disambiguation))
• Pantomime (theatre) (redirect to Pantomime)
  • Talk:Pantomime (theatre) (has {{WikiProject Theatre}})
• Pantomime (disambiguation)
  • Talk:Pantomime (disambiguation) (does not have {{WikiProject Theatre}})
• The British Pantomime ({{mergeto}} request to Pantomime)
• Mime artist
  • Talk:Mime artist (does not have {{WikiProject Theatre}})

This situation is quite confusing and I was hoping someone involved in WikiProject Theatre could sort it out. At a minimum, articles and their talk pages should redirect consistently. I can't say whether the merge requests are valid, but The British Pantomime seems to duplicate the information in Pantomime (not to mention have a strage title that looks like the title of a particular work, not a genre or theatre tradition). It looks like Mime artist is intended to deal with mime/pantomime in the United States, but that's just my admitted confused opinion. Mike Dillon 21:52, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors.
