two little improvements

The reason I came here was because I have a question. Would it be constructive to put a little blurb in the article for each station that supports ITunes tagging so that users like myself won't have to search the dial trying to figure out why I can't tag songs off of the radio? This is what the example for KNBQ would look like, KNBQ is one of only a handfull of radio stations in the US to support RDS technology, which allows users of IPods to tag songs directly from the radio. It is the only station in the Seattle market to do so. Also, I think some of the years in radio should be improved. The last time I looked at 1999 in radio there were only a few events. Also, I think the lists of radio stations established in a particular year should be updated. KFMK needs to be added to 1998 and KUBE and KZOK to 1964. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bobdavcav (talkcontribs) 04:07, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (radio series)

Hello, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (radio series) is one of the few radio Featured Articles, and I would quite like it to be the featured article on 11th May. However, because it was promoted in 2006, it needs a bit of work doing before then. I'm currently working on improving it, but any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks! Edits needed to List of In Our Time programmes

Hello there. I was just looking at List of In Our Time programmes. The article could be edited by some more au fait with tabulation on Wikipedia than me. While I am here, I also mentioned on the article's talk page that rather than saying "Next programme" we should specify dates on which the next programme will be broadcast - any feedback to that suggestion is welcome. Also, does any one know how to tabulate the article on the Lent Talks? Feedback will be most welcome. ACEOREVIVED (talk) 09:38, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

Irish pirate radio

Irish pirate radio has no source or citations. It has mostly been edited by anonIPs but really needs an expert to review and add at least a few references, assuming one can find some books or other available sources. Perhaps Irish media: a critical history since 1922 by John Horgan will be of help if someone can access a copy. ww2censor (talk) 17:54, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

Target of FM Redirect

FM is currently a redirect to frequency modulation. That said, an non-exhaustive survey suggests that majority of incoming links are really referring to FM broadcasting or another page or context related to FM radio and not to the page that describes the physics of analog frequency modulation.

User:Georgia guy and I have been having a conversation over at Talk:FM about where the FM redirect should point.

If folks have a moment to read the conversation so far, we'd love some additional thoughts from other involved Wikipedians. Thanks in advance! —mako 05:49, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

WikiWomen's History Month

Hi everyone. March is Women's History Month and I'm hoping a few folks here at WP:Radio will have interest in putting on events related to women's roles in radio; as performers, hosts, voices, executives. We've created an event page on English Wikipedia (please translate!) and I hope you'll find the inspiration to participate. These events can take place off wiki, like edit-a-thons, or on wiki, such as themes and translations. Please visit the page here: WikiWomen's History Month. VOA help if possible

Hello I just took a bunch of pictures of all 3 Voice of America broadcast sites near Greenville NC, enumerated at International Broadcasting Bureau Greenville Transmitting Station

However the pictures I took directly contradict the text on that page, specifically concerning which site is named after Edward R Murrow (article says Site C, but I have pictures of Site B with that title on the side of a building), and also site A looks active (but the article says it isn't), sooooo if there are any VOA nerds out there I would appreciate some help in the cleanup process- I will upload the images anyways but sooner or later this will need to get sorted out. 64.134.242.7 (talk) 05:18, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

More opportunities for editors to access free research databases!

The quest for getting Wikipedia editors the sources they need for articles related to radio and other subjects is gaining momentum. Here's what's happening and what you can sign up for right now:

  • Credo Reference provides full-text online versions of nearly 1200 published reference works from more than 70 publishers in every major subject, including general and subject dictionaries and encyclopedias. There are 125 full Credo 350 accounts available, with access even to 100 more references works than in Credo's original donation. All you need is a 1-year old account with 1000 edits. Sign up here.
  • HighBeam Research has access to over 80 million articles from 6,500 publications including newspapers, magazines, academic journals, newswires, trade magazines and encyclopedias. Thousands of new articles are added daily, and archives date back over 25 years covering a wide range of subjects and industries. There are 250 full access 1-year accounts available. All you need is a 1-year old account with 1000 edits. Sign up here.
  • Questia is an online research library for books and journal articles focusing on the humanities and social sciences. Questia has curated titles from over 300 trusted publishers including 77,000 full-text books and 4 million journal, magazine, and newspaper articles, as well as encyclopedia entries. There will soon be 1000 full access 1-year accounts available. All you need is a 1-year old account with 1000 edits. Sign up here.

In addition to these great partnerships, you might be interested in the next-generation idea to create a central Wikipedia Library where approved editors would have access to all participating resource donors. It's still in the preliminary stages, but if you like the idea, add your feedback to the Community Fellowship proposal to start developing the project. Women's History Month is in March

Hi everyone at WikiProject Radio!

Women's history month is around the corner, in March, and we're planning the second WikiWomen's History Month.

This event, which is organized by volunteers from the WikiWomen's Collaborative, supports improving coverage about women's history during the month of March. Events take place both offline and online. We are encouraging WikiProjects to focus on women's history related to their subject for the month of March. Some ideas include:

  • Women who have made an impact in radio both on the air or in the radio business
  • Radio stations owned or started by women
  • Radio technology developed or created by women

We hope you'll participate! You can list your your project focus here, and also help improve our to-do list. Thank you for all you do for Wikipedia! SarahStierch (talk) 20:20, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

ENGVAR in category names

I'm just passing through, but I was trying to put some cats on the newly-created Category:Television programmes which were adapted for radio and noticed what a mess the radio show hierarchy is, with the old problem of WP:ENGVAR raising its ugly head. For instance, Category:Radio programmes based on novels‎ is in Category:Radio programs based on works which is clearly a nonsense. The TV people achieve ENGVAR neutrality by having their categories based on Category:Television programming, so Category:Radio programming could work, but Category:Radio shows might be more natural? For consistency Category:Television programmes which were adapted for radio might be renamed to something like Category:Radio shows originating on television but I suspect in practice the radio show will mostly be a footnote on the main TV show article, so the current wording will be more accurate in most cases. Anyway, I just thought I'd point it out, I'll leave it to the radio regulars to work out how you do it.... Le Deluge (talk) 13:56, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Kingston Hospital Radio

The article Kingston Hospital Radio has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable - radio for the hospital only. No secondary sources and nothing establishing notability.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Help a new user?

Hey, I recently moved an article into a user's mainspace at User:Trentfinlay/Live Wire Radio as it was up for speedy and I didn't want it to be immediately nominated for AfD once I declined it. Live Wire Radio looks to be potentially notable upon first glance, so I thought I'd ask for some assistance with the user and the article. He seems really eager to work on the article, but is just green. I thought it'd be helpful if I got someone specifically interested in radio articles to really help him out in editing the article and looking for sources. I've given him some explanation on sources, but the article still needs some work before it'd be a comfortable keep. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 05:36, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

Lists of radio stations by frequency pages Disambiguation or List?

There are many pages listing radio broadcasts on different frequencies, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Lists_of_radio_stations_by_frequency

Many of these, such as 88.0_FM are assessed as being Disambiguation pages - as logically they list articles of a 'similar' or 'connected' nature.

However are these truly disambiguation pages? As most of the time the individual articles have very different names (being the names of the radio services or their call-signs) so are these pages more correctly a 'list' page?

I recently assessed a few of these pages as 'disambiguation' - mainly following what seemed to be the current pattern. Another editor challenged this assessment. I can see both views having strong arguments to be adopted, so wish to get a wider view, as I think that there should be uniformity across the board here.

List of Australian Radio Broadcast Transmissions

  • G'day Guys
  • I have limited experience on Wikipedia, but have been working on a new list for the last few weeks.
  • Content is starting to look good (months of work ahead), but the format is terrible.
  • Can someone please have a look at the article and tell me how to remove the negative comments at the start from an administrator.
  • Also would appreciate some advice on how to format the article / list better.
  • Specific question: how should I format a date range of say, before 1958 to after 1960?
  • Specific question: the table of contents / list of sections at the start is massive, can I shift it to side by side (with content) to right?
  • Samuel.dellit (talk) 06:31, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
In your sublists there are a lot of ?? appearing. Are you going to be able to fill any of those dates in? Also we need to know where the information came from, ie references. Some clues may be in the ACMA2013 etc, but what does that mean? For your characteristics a table may be more compact. But where things have changed over time, perhaps you need multiple rows. What you have here is more than a list, but a history of technical characteristics. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 11:19, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

Smooth Radio relaunch

Hi, I'm looking for some advice on how to handle the relaunch of Smooth Radio, a UK station about to undergo a dramatic change. Smooth came about as a result of the merging of several regional stations into a national station in October 2010, but its owners are now taking it off the national DAB multiplex and returning to some regional programming. As Smooth will effectively no longer be a national broadcaster, my proposal is to start a new article covering the new format station(s), and perhaps to move the existing article to another title. I was thinking of something like Smooth Radio (2010) for the existing station and Smooth Radio (2014) for the relaunched one. Smooth Radio would then become a disambiguation page, and is likely to be the main search term for anyone looking for Smooth stations, so we could direct them to the appropriate article. Smooth's previous incarnations all have separate articles, and the page on the present station is a GA, so I don't really want to see it ruined with the addition of lots of information that may not necessarily be sourceable. I've mentioned this on the talk page, but thought it might be worth asking here for input. Your thoughts would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Paul MacDermott (talk) 19:45, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

American Radio History is a very good site. Among the more useful resources for those interested in old-time radio are directories/yearbooks and issues of publications such as Radio Mirror and Broadcasting magazines. It also has material related to other aspects of radio. Volumes can be browsed individually in PDF form. Certain format of rock radio

I have heard of radio stations with a modern rock format that plays hard rock artists found on active rock stations like Metallica, Chevelle and Crossfade; artists found on alternative stations such as 311 and American Hi-Fi; and rock artists like O.A.R. and U2. Such stations like this do not play artists like Avicii or Lorde. What article would this fit in? Leaflet For Wikiproject Radio At Wikimania 2014 (updated version)

Please note: This is an updated version of a previous post that I made.

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

The deadline for submissions is 1st July 2014

For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

Help needed for expanding "years in radio" pages

As I have looked at Wikipedia's "years in radio" pages, I have noticed that many -- probably all, although I haven't checked nearly that many -- have much room for expansion.

If you aren't familiar with those pages, Table of years in radio gives links to the individual pages. Typically each page has sections for events, debuts of programs and births of people associated with radio. Each section consists of a bulleted list, so little writing is required.

I have begun trying to remember to add to those pages when I come across a program debut, a person's birth or something like that. If each of us who is interested in radio would add to the appropriate pages when we find relevant information, that could mean significant expansion without much extra work by anyone.

Including references when we add items will enhance the usefulness of the lists. Eddie Blick (talk) 02:59, 20 July 2014 (UTC)

Feedback sought on list of OTR American announcers

Just today I read a post higher on the page ("AfC submission")regarding a proposed article, Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/List of old-time American radio announcers. The article interested me because at one point I submitted a proposed article along the same lines. The critique includes the comment, "if the list is going to include names without associated Wikipedia articles, references will be needed to confirm who they are and why they belong on the list."

My question for this group is, "What kind of reference would be sufficient?"

  • Inclusion in an OTR reference such as John Dunning's "On the Air"?
  • Listing in one of the old radio directories/annuals/yearbooks?
  • Something else?

My feeling is that a list like this one should include announcers who do not have articles on Wikipedia so that researchers can easily identify names of people about whom they might want to write. Eddie Blick (talk) 20:08, 20 July 2014 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Cleared the entire GA Review backlog for Media and drama

  1. Thank you all to all our editors who help to contribute to Quality improvement efforts on Wikipedia related to WP:RADIO.
  2. I've helped to clear the entire GA Review backlog for Media and drama, which can be seen at Wikipedia:Good article nominations/Topic lists/Media and drama.
  3. I'd like to make a suggestion, here, which is optional, for you to please consider:
  4. Suggestion: This suggestion is optional only, but I ask you to please at least read over the Good Article review instructions, and consider reviewing two to three (2-3) GA candidates from good articles nominations, for each one (1) that you nominate. Again, this is optional and a suggestion only, but please do familiarize yourself at least with how to review, and then think about it -- as a way to pay it forward.

Thank you,

Auto-assessment of article classes

Following a recent discussion at WP:VPR, there is consensus for an opt-in bot task that automatically assesses the class of articles based on classes listed for other project templates on the same page. In other words, if WikiProject A has evaluated an article to be C-class and WikiProject B hasn't evaluated the article at all, such a bot task would automatically evaluate the article as C-class for WikiProject B.

If you think auto-assessment might benefit this project, consider discussing it with other members here. For more information or to request an auto-assessment run, please visit User:BU RoBOT/autoassess. This is a one-time message to alert projects with over 1,000 unassessed articles to this possibility. ~ RobTalk 01:20, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

FEBC radios

At page patrol, I merged DXAS to Far East Broadcasting Company since it looked like the thing to do per WP:BCAST.

I realized afterwards that there are plenty of stations of the same broadcaster with articles. While the current coverage is generally speaking a bit promotional, I wonder if there was a former consensus about what to do in those cases. Any thought from the Wikiproject?

Popular pages report

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Radio/Archive 3/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Radio.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Radio, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

radio/TV transmitters and towers

I find that the radio/TV generators (transmitters) and their towers/masts are usually discussed in the same article. But I find the articles are variously categorized into Category:Radio masts and towers, Category:Communication towers and Category:Broadcast transmitters and their subcategories with neither rhyme nor reason and no explanation. What might be a good categorization structure to pursue here and why? Hmains (talk) 17:46, 21 May 2017 (UTC)

Translators

In many articles about AM radio stations, there are one or more FM translators. The articles often state that these translators extend the station's coverage area. I read somewhere that this is not allowed for AM stations. Instead, translators merely give AM stations a presence on the FM dial in an era when many people are not using AM radio. Even if I don't know where this idea came from, perhaps the Wikipedia articles should not say the translators extend the coverage area, without any justification other than the fact (if this is a fact) that this particular station does not have a source for this information.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 20:19, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

Disambiguation links on pages tagged by this wikiproject

Wikipedia has many thousands of wikilinks which point to disambiguation pages. It would be useful to readers if these links directed them to the specific pages of interest, rather than making them search through a list. Members of WikiProject Disambiguation have been working on this and the total number is now below 20,000 for the first time. Some of these links require specialist knowledge of the topics concerned and therefore it would be great if you could help in your area of expertise.

Proposed deletion of Mathematics of radio engineering

The article Mathematics of radio engineering has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Serious concerns on talk page have not been addressed since 2012.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. — Sebastian 01:51, 22 December 2017 (UTC)

Distinction of PACTOR

Irish pirate radio

It's been 6 years since I posted a request for someone to help with Irish pirate radio article but the silence has been deafening. The article has few sources or citations and these are rather minor for such an extensive article. It has mostly been edited by anonIPs but really needs an expert to review and add at least a few references, assuming one can find some books or other available sources as there seems to be little available online. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:52, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

List of In Our Time programmes

Use of "(radio series)" in titles

Does WikiProject Radio (or Wikipedia in general) have a style rule for using only "XXX (radio series)" for disambiguation with articles about programs on radio? A number of titles have been changed to that form recently, causing me to wonder if I have overlooked a rule when I have created articles. I searched the WikiProject Radio talk archives and found Radio Article Names from May 2007 in which someone asked about variations in titles, but no response appeared. Eddie Blick (talk) 00:34, 1 August 2018 (UTC)

Improving consistency would be an improvement. My observation is that standards for these things emerge organically and some inconsistency through the process is not a disaster. I prefer simple and broad parenthetical disambiguation so would support "(radio)". ~Kvng (talk) 12:24, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply, Kvng. I assume that the person who made the changes that I have seen did so based on his or her preference. Perhaps those of us in WikiProject Radio could come up with a standard naming convention. I don't know what the procedure to do so would be. Eddie Blick (talk) 13:49, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
The procedure would be to get at least one more editor to comment here on a concrete proposal and see if we can establish a WP:CONSENSUS around it. This might me helped by listing here the articles we would propose to move/rename. Once we have a consensus we would move articles directly, where possible, or through WP:RM where necessary. ~Kvng (talk) 16:03, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
If disambiguation would be an improvement, by all means "(radio series)" would be appropriate. Can someone give examples of articles this might be needed at? - LuckyLouie (talk) 16:55, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
Kvng, LuckyLouie Compiling a list of all articles to which the proposal would apply would take some time. I have created more than 40 articles with "(radio program)" in the title, and many more with "(radio)" or "(radio program)" were created by other people. Most of the time the parenthetical element is used to differentiate from a TV program with the same title. Occasionally, it differentiates from a film or some other work with the same title. Probably the best single source would be List of U.S. radio programs, but we would have to use the source editor; the links are all piped to show the title without the parenthetical element. Eddie Blick (talk) 20:07, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
OK, I see. The "(radio)" disambiguation is simplest and can cover all cases, which may be best. - LuckyLouie (talk) 20:13, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
@Teblick:, do you know what sort of disambiguation do television programs use? My listmaking suggestion is not required but if we're going to rename stuff, we'll have to track it down so it's not busy work. It is a waste of time to discuss how we want articles to be named if we don't follow that by actually doing the work of renaming them. I am able to help with this work but not this week. ~Kvng (talk) 01:44, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
@Kvng:, television programs are covered in Wikipedia:Naming conventions (television). You might also be interested in a discussion in which I was involved at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Television#Television articles with incorrect naming style. Eddie Blick (talk) 02:01, 7 August 2018 (UTC)

Date formats for years-in-radio lists

Is there a reason for listing dates in day-month-year format in "XXXX in radio" lists? Since most of the lists are dominated by American programs and events, it seems to me that the American month-day-year format would be appropriate. The format used to vary from one list to another (I suppose depending on which editor created each list) but recently some of those that were in American format have been changed (such as 1945 in radio). Is there a style consensus here that I'm not aware of? Eddie Blick (talk) 22:15, 6 January 2019 (UTC)

You'll want to get consensus before making any across-the-board changes. We can try to establish consensus here. If there is not enough participation you can use WP:RFC. To keep unproductive thrashing from happening, we generally try to stick with what is established unless there's a strong argument for change. "Dominated by American programs" does not appear to be a strong argument. Changes that clearly improve consistency, such as those you've identified, can usually be done without controversy. ~Kvng (talk) 14:43, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
I appreciate your feedback, Kvng. I agree with the principle of establishing consistency. I just wonder why the day-month-year format is preferable to month-day-year. Eddie Blick (talk) 19:20, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
One is not preferable over the other. We have established these leave-it-alone policies so that editors don't spend time arguing and flipping back and forth over it. ~Kvng (talk) 21:13, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
I was not trying to argue or flip back and forth. I thought this page would be the place to seek consensus. I apologize for wasting your time on something so unimportant. Eddie Blick (talk) 22:08, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
I was not accusing you of flipping, just trying to give you some background on policy and past experience. Thank you for being considerate of other people's time. Rest assured this is all good.
To be clear though, I don't support making these date formatting changes without a consensus. This is the right place to try and get consensus but we need to have more than the two of us involved to get there. See my earlier suggestions if you're interested in pursuing this further. ~Kvng (talk) 03:47, 11 January 2019 (UTC)
I don't have a strong opinion about whether the lists should be using MDY or DMY. This wikiproject has never, so far as I know, established a formal consensus one way or the other — because our domain of activity is international and thus encompasses countries using both standards, its position is much like the one used by Wikiproject Canada (where we have conflicting perceptions of the "standard", based on whether you appeal to government or media sources): as long as the article's date formatting is internally consistent within itself, it's not productive or useful to go around flipping it the other way. Also, the main reason "Year in radio" articles contain primarily American content isn't that they're meant to contain primarily American content, it's that other countries' radio stuff isn't getting added to them as reliably or comprehensively as it's supposed to be. So even those lists themselves are supposed to be crossing over the DMY-vs.-MDY line too — they're just incomplete, not intentionally exclusive to MDY countries. Question about adding a new page of interest to a WikiProject

Hi,

Can I ask a quick question...if I want to add this WikiProject to a page in which it would be potentially interested (IHeartRadio Canada), can I do that unilaterally and, if so, what's the tag should I use?

Also, I see your notification of moves seem to be auto-generated. How can I have the page notify your page?

Thanks, Doug — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dmehus (talkcontribs) 13:37, 28 August 2019 (UTC)

New bot to remove completed infobox requests

Hello! I have recently created a bot to remove completed infobox requests and am sending this message to WikiProject Radio since the project currently has a backlogged infobox request category. Details about the task can be found at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/PearBOT 2, but in short it removes all infobox requests from articles with an infobox, once a week. To sign up, reply with {{ping|Trialpears}} and tell me if any special considerations are required for the Wikiproject. For example: if only a specific infobox should be detected, such as {{infobox journal}} for WikiProject Academic Journals; or if an irregularly named infobox such as {{starbox begin}} should be detected. Feel free to ask if you have any questions!

Global

Hi there,

I've just noticed that Global have had a rebrand and are no longer called 'Global Radio'.

There's also a new blue logo so the red one on this page is no longer used. Looks like they're using one logo for all of their work.

Thanks Sophie

Update to peer review page

Hi all, I've boldly updated your project's peer review page (Wikipedia:WikiProject Radio/Peer review) by updating the instructions and archiving old reviews.

The new instructions use Wikipedia's general peer review process (WP:PR) to list peer reviews. Your project's reviews are still able to be listed on your local page too.

The benefits of this change is that review requests will get seen by a wider audience and are likely to be attended to in a more timely way (many WikiProject peer reviews remain unanswered after years). The Wikipedia peer review process is also more maintained than most WikiProjects, and this may help save time for your active members.

I've done this boldly as it seems your peer review page is pretty inactive and I am working through around 90 such similar peer review pages. Please feel free to discuss below - please ping me ({{u|Tom (LT)}}) in your response.

Cheers and hope you are well, Tom (LT) (talk) 23:58, 10 November 2020 (UTC)

Big Merger for Guyanese Radio

Article on Great Lives

The article on the BBC Radio 4 series Great Lives needs updating. It has the entries in it for 2020 and then stops but there have been editions of this programme broadcast in 2021. Rollo August (talk) 20:53, 21 May 2021 (UTC) Yes, there has been a series of this programme broadcast between April and May 2021. Its first programme was on Patricia Highsmith, who had been nominated for "Great Life" status by director Jonathan Kent. Other programmes in the series include one on Chinua Achebe, who was nominated for "Great Life" status by Yasmin Alibhai Brown, and Harry Hopkins, who had been nominated for "Great Life" status by David Dimbleby. Rollo August (talk) 21:07, 21 May 2021 (UTC) Yes, there have been programmes broadcast since then, such as that on Ivor Cutler and that on Elliott Smith. I am pretty sure the latest edition of the programme broadcast at the time of typing was on William Hazlitt, who was nominated for "Great Life" status by Ben Miller. External links on the PMR446 page

The page on PMR446 has had a link added to it that, in my opinion, violates the guidelines on external links, particularly point 11 in Wikipedia:FANSITE. I've also talked personally with a person who was partially responsbile for the edit, and they admitted to adding the site in hopes that it would bring traffic. In my eyes, this is a conflict-of-interset, but I'd like somebody else to take a look at this. Radostin04 (talk) 14:05, 11 December 2021 (UTC)

Try bringing it up on Talk:PMR446 and see if there is consensus to remove the EL. While Wikipedia:FANSITE is very specific about such links, a number of radio articles appear to tolerate ELs to noncommercial "user groups" simply because there are so few published resources on the topics outside of amateurs, collectors and other enthusiasts. (Caveat: naturally, such user groups would not be suitable as citable reliable source for article text). - - LuckyLouie (talk) 17:09, 11 December 2021 (UTC)

Please Verify or Clarify article

If FM radio was invented in the United States, then why was an Electrical Engineer from Ecuador already broadcasting in FM by 1925? Many of his invention were purchase by RCA to be used in the US. His name is Carlos Enrique Jose Maria Cordovez Borja. Could you please verify or post the correction. Thank You — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marine794life (talkcontribs) 00:10, 17 December 2021 (UTC)

According to the Spanish Wiki article on Cordovez, es:Carlos Cordovez Borja he was operating a shortwave station in 1925, not FM. He seems like an interesting fellow and getting a translated version of his es.wiki article on en.wiki would be good. If you have WP:RS about him and FM broadcasting, bringing those to the table would be good too. —Carter (Tcr25) (talk) 12:03, 17 December 2021 (UTC)
There are some hyperbolic articles [8] that credit him with inventing a vacuum tube that was somehow influential in the development of FM. However, we'd need some very high quality sources to add this to the article. - - LuckyLouie (talk) 14:47, 17 December 2021 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Stolp radio transmitter

Someone who understands these things might like to have a look at this: an unreliable editor altered "by suitable feeding of single antenna of an antenna group" to "by suitable feeding of a single antenna or an antenna group" in the lead, and I'm not confident enough of my German or Google translate to make sense of the German version. The same editor changed "metres" to "meters" throughout, when MOS:NUM says "m" should be used (which nicely avoids ENGVAR issues here): I've fixed those. The article has no refs, but an External Link which appears to source some at least of its content: Google translate offers:

"by a transmitter in Stolp (Pomerania). This transmitter has become interesting and unique because its antenna was a model test for a large project. Two questions should be clarified, namely whether a good fading reduction can be achieved with an extended surface antenna and the possibility of generating any desired directional diagram by changing the phase position of the individual radiators. The first question would have been important for long-wave broadcasters, the second question for a project that even today seems utopian. The so-called "construction project X" planned to arrange 10 active antennas, i.e. each equipped with a high-performance output stage, on the circumference of a circle with a diameter of around 1 km, in order to be able to generate any fade-free directional diagrams with central control through appropriate phases. A single, central transmitter was sufficient for the model test in Stolp. With the beginning of the war, these attempts did not come to an end, "construction project X" never came about. So the antenna in Stolp remained the only one of its kind."

Over to you. PamD 15:11, 27 September 2022 (UTC)

Is any of this citeable to a WP:RS? Point me to one and I'll add it to the article. - LuckyLouie (talk) 16:20, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
That change is clearly wrong. One can't change the directional pattern of a single antenna by adjusting its phase. That only works in an array. The passage has further problems – it obfuscates the skywave suppression part of the trial (for which only a single central antenna is required) and the directional control aspect (for which a circular array of antennas is required). Also, the claim that the phase of only a single antenna is varied (the German source does not say that) is probably wrong. Much more likely all the elements were varied simultaneously. The whole article needs a good copyedit. SpinningSpark 16:38, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
The German Wikipedia entry cites a couple of possible sources:
  • Andreas Brudnjak: The history of German medium-wave transmitters from 1923 to 1945. Funk-Verlag Hein, Dessau-Roßlau 2010, ISBN 978-3-939197-51-5, pp. 86-89, 119.
  • Long and medium wave radio transmitters as of 1943. Society for German Postal History (ed.) In: Archive for German Postal History, yearbook, volume 1972, table 1.
It's unclear if only a single radiator was completed as the model, or the rest of the array was later constructed. It would be good to clarify this. - LuckyLouie (talk) 16:58, 27 September 2022 (UTC)

Shortwave radio receiver

Right-now the en: article is about consumer/prosumer all-wave receivers. But there are also literally shortwave (nothing but shortwave) communications and military receivers. Right now, wikidata and commons lump them all in one commons:Category:Shortwave radio receivers and d:Q2558173. Shouldn't the two groups be split, at least for wikidata? Retired electrician (talk) 13:45, 11 February 2023 (UTC)

The shortwave receiver article doesn't emphasize "consumer/prosumer all-wave receivers". It encompasses communications receivers like the R-390A and consumer receivers like the Trans-Oceanic because they are both examples of shortwave receivers. If you are looking for a clear distinction, see the communications receiver article. - LuckyLouie (talk) 14:12, 11 February 2023 (UTC)
We shouldn't make any change to any article solely because Wikidata has a problem. Wikidata can sort its own problems out. SpinningSpark 17:39, 11 February 2023 (UTC)

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. I think what you’re saying is there are an unknown number of links to the FCC database that are published in articles that are dead or no longer working. You might ask at Village Pump for possible solutions, but I think they will need the specific articles and the specific dead links you want help repairing. - LuckyLouie (talk) 00:54, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
I don't think it's possible to figure out all the articles. I thought maybe there would be a way to search for the first part of that URL and then somehow replace that. It's not simple because the URL hasn't changed, but getting there is the problem.16:22, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
I think a WP reference search for specific url prefixes does exist. I don't recall exactly how it works, but again, the Village Pump could probably help. Or perhaps @User:DrChuck68 could help. Good luck! BTW I was just poking around and found this: [[9]]. It appears to be a template to generate a link to callsign history PDF's contained in the FCC database. There are some other interesting templates in the "see also" section of that page. - LuckyLouie (talk) 16:57, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
