Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Problem with the Template:WPFinland sidebar

I've created the sidebar above, but any time I include it it automatically restricts the "type range" of everything below it to it's own size. If anyone knows how to fix this, please feel free to do so. Badbilltucker 23:09, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

Proposal for Project Page Additions

Hello! I'm interested in joining the project, but I couldn't bring myself to signing under the Project organisation header. So I would like to propose a few changes to the Project Page.

The first change I would like to see would be the renaming of Project organisation to Participants, and also changes to the structure of it. Here is an example:

I find that the current Project organisation is good, but a bit too specific (sorted into Sports, Bio, Arts, etc.).

Navigation boxes in Finnish railway station articles

How should we do the "previous - next" navigation boxes in articles about Finnish railway stations? For the VR commuter rail network, it is easy: simply treat Helsinki Central railway station as the heart, and have one box for each route, or group of routes, having the same previous and next station and this one.

But long distance trains pose a huge problem. The long distance railway network in Finland (see List of railway lines in Finland) is much more interconnected and decentralised than the VR commuter rail network. How should we mark each box? With the ultimate endpoints (Helsinki and Kolari in the best case)? This would create a problem when deciding which stations are more important than which. Or should we do it like the Finnish Wikipedia appears to do, by only marking one individual, nonambiguous piece of track at a time? For example, the track from Helsinki to Riihimäki is a straight line with no forks. From Riihimäki it then forks to Tampere and other directions. And how to decide which way the routes go? Automatically treating central stations in large cities as starting points and minor stations in surrounding municipalities as ending points can lead to collisions between two major cities, such as between Helsinki and Turku. Infobox for Finnish cities

Hi all! Would you agree that the infoboxes of Finnish cities should be unified somewhat using a flexible template such as Template:Infobox City? As it stands, the infoboxes of several major cities of Finland are represented without templates using static markup instead. Big no-no. –Zinjixmaggir 17:36, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

I can't see why the current infobox should be changed. It fits perfectly for its purpose, the same design is used in the Finnish Wikipedia, and it looks a lot better than most of the infoboxes I've encountered. If the static markup is a problem, then we can certainly convert it into a template. Maybe make two versions, one for Finnish cities (Template:Infobox Finnish City) and the other for Finnish municipalities (Template:Infobox Finnish Municipality). --ざくら木 17:14, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

There is no need for a separate template for Finnish cities. Zinjixmaggir is correct that all the related articles need to be updated with {{Infobox City}}. No, we need some extra information on Finnish cities. Finland-related things as whether the city is bilingual, what province it is in, region, sub-region etc. We should use a template instead of the code, but we need own template as German Bundeslands etc have, with Finnish information. --Pudeo (Talk) 21:40, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Well, there is always need for extra parameters when discussing widely used templates like this one. If we do have a template of our own, it should be based on the markup of Infobox City, so that at least the layout matches most of the non-Finnish cities. Prolog 06:59, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

Prolog, about the edits you made in Espoo, please do not change the infobox until we have reached a consensus on what to do.

I still think Template:Infobox City is not the best option when it comes to representing Finnish cities. The current infobox should be kept the way it is because frankly, having oodles of infoboxes that more or less resemble each other closely will only make Wikipedia a duller encyclopedia. The current infobox is lively, packed with relevant information and makes even short articles interesting.

Also, we should be thinking of Finnish cities and municipalities as a whole, for the simple reason that they are equal sub-national entities. With a population of a little over 230,000 Espoo may be a "city," but if we want the infoboxes of Finnish municipalities to have a uniform look, then, even when it comes to Finnish cities, we should respect the current style that was originally established in WP:INFOBOX. --ざくら木 14:56, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

I think that as an encyclopedia we need to have a consistent layout, even if it is "dull" to some. The reader should be able to navigate through cities from different countries and find the information they are looking for in the approximately same place, without having to adjust to all the different template layouts. The current system isnt as good as the infobox template in my opinion. Ofcourse the best option would be that someone ould make a new template specifically designed for finnish cities and municipalities (I think two versions one for both would be ideal). The current system has many bad sides, worst in my opinion being the map and the lack of "skyline" picture. English wikipedia isnt ment to serve finns primaly, but foreigners who might not be able to situate the current map correctly to northern europe. Infobox city templates map is much much better. That's one of the reasons why I think there should be two different templates; one for cities and one for municipalities. There dosent have to be a skyline picture if that sortoff picture isnt available. Im sure that From Finland's biggest cities these sortoff pictures will easily be taken if they dont already exist. I think they're very fine what Jonnts added. There were some flaws that I suggest we fix, as I already did to Oulu.

1. If municipality is unilingual, don't add the language which isn't official. Eg. don't put Uleåborgs stad to Oulu. If bilingual, add majority language first.
2. Replace Municipality with [[Sub-regions of Finland|Sub-region]]
3. Add official languages with |blank_name =[[Languages of Finland|Official languages]] |blank_info =[[Finnish language|Finnish]] to the end as in Oulu.

You can add any fields you like with the blank_name. I will be correcting the ones Jonnts already added. PS. don't wikiling City managers, they rarely even would be notable, if we even got enough information to write from. (expection perhaps in Helsinki) --Pudeo (Talk) 18:45, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

Summer 2007 Assessment Drive

There is an assessment drive going on at Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Assessment/Assessment Drive, encompassing all Unassessed biography articles on Wikipedia. This is an immense task, any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Seeing this Assessment Drive made me realise that our own Project is accumulating a small backlog of articles that need to be assessed (240+ at the moment). Would someone be willing to do a few of these? I'm willing to start and finish the assessment of articles 1 through K tomorrow. Thank you in advance, Thereen 07:26, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

I'll try to start with L on Category:Unassessed-Class Finland articles. There are also lots of articles still untagged, but since I have gone through related categories randomly (2000+ articles so far), I have no idea how many articles are missing the {{WikiProject Finland}} tag. Finnish exonyms for Åland municipalities

On the advice of Zakuragi, I'm bringing this question here. An edit war has erupted in the articles on Lemland and Kökar, where 83.102.5.106 and his/her alias Jommala (see this revision) insist on adding the Finnish exonyms "Lemlanti" and "Köökari" to the top of the article. If you'd refer to their respective talk pages (Talk:Lemland, Talk:Kökar) I've provided ample evidence that both are referred to as "Kökar" and "Lemland" in Finnish and have edited the articles to that effect. In the mean time I've been referred to as everything from "swedish vandalist" to "separatist" by Jommala and his "buddies" (see here).
My contention is that the article shouldn't start off with unofficial names that are not even in conventional modern usage, other than by perhaps Jommala him/herself. To the extent Lemland and Kökar are referred to in Finnish, it seems to me they're most commonly referred to as "Lemland" and "Kökar", respectively. Compare that with the usage of Maarianhamina for Mariehamn, which is mentioned at the top of the article. As it should be.

See also Suomi.fi which seems to be pretty unequivocal in the matter. Note "Mariehamn" being referred to as "Maarianhamina", as opposed to "Lemland" and "Kökar".

The point is that NordicStorm, MoRSE and Silenzio has added several swedish name to finnish municipalities but they cannot give add same kind of name to swedish municipalities. • Names of places can appear in their official languages and in their English language versions.
• Åland is monolingually Swedish.

I don't agree that much with Jommala here, but Åland was a part of Turku and Pori County before gaining autonomy, and the municipalities had Finnish names, which were sometimes used even in the 1950-1970s. For historical interest, they could be mentioned, such as Russian cities name historical Russian, Finnish and Karelia, such as Kondopoga. I think it works nicely there. Names as Köökari aren't used today, except perhaps in spoken Finnish - Lemland, Lemlantiin. I don't see that many reasons to include Ristitaipale in the lead of Korsnäs because there is a chapter on the Finnish names already. The rest is only matter of convetion, if we don't think it's necessary to mention old Finnish names on these articles, remove unofficial Masko from Masku, Ilomantsis from Ilomantsi, Östermyra from Seinäjoki and so on. --Pudeo⺮ 16:19, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

Kökar was historically called Köökari in Finnish. Today, this name is rarely used even by those who are Finnish-speaking.

Fine to me in any case, though Jommala has removed a bunch of some inofficial Swedish names from some articles arlready, so I guess we remove all then? The point of this discussion is to form a consensus, or failing that, reach a compromise. You're not doing yourself any favours by continuing edit warring and using generally abusive language. Hey guys. I'm not a member of the project, but for ease (since I foresee that I'll be doing a little bit of work within your articles in the near future) I've moved the project's talk banner from {{WikiProject Finland}} to simply {{Finland}}. It's just much more straightforward that way. Any objections, I'm sorry, but you;ll have to ask an admin to revert, but I think it's more appropriate. Are you sure about that? I thought they changed it so that couldn't be done any more because of the reliability of the function...? Maybe not. I haven't tried in a long time, mind you, but last time I tried (with moving an uncontrovertial and straightforward page over a redirect) it knocked me back, but who knows? Yes, I'm quite sure and Special:Log/move confirms everything is working normally. There could've been other issues with your move attempt; edit history, full protection, temporary bug in the system, etc. I think Template:Finland would've made a useful redirect to Template:WikiProject Finland, and since it does not really matter what the template actually is called, a move seems like a good change too. Valtio

Can someone with a knowledge of Finnish check the article Valtio against the reference it cites. While it seems plausible that such a micronation exists, and that Helsinki Sangomat might cover it, some of the claims in the article are a bit ridiculous. I remember reading in Helsingin Sanomat's NYT-Liite about this Valtio. It is true that this reporter started this "state" but in my opinion it's like a joke, not a serious thing. I don't think the article should be deleted, but it will need re-doing. --Spiby (talk) 16:29, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

I have requested that the article on Valtio be restored at Wikipedia:Deletion review#Valtio. It would be extremely helpful if anyone could tell us what the article here says regarding the subject. I've tried an automatic translation, and regret to say that it was all but incomprehensible, and would greatly appreciate any input from someone who can actually read the original text. Thank you. Here is a quick translation of the first part of the text. My Finnish is not so good, but here goes: A reindeer? A reindeer! Luckily the expedition points out that we are just at the airport and that it’s only a stuffed one. Ruotuväki goes on a campaign to conquer reporter Ari Peltonen’s Valtio. The piece of land insanely stolen from Finland at the Posio latitude is without defence, so something has to be done about the situation.

We choose Rovaniemi as our base, because we heard in the news that Lordi has done PR for this snowy settlement. We think of our strategy almost all night and the next morning we’re ready to go. As the morning sun shines the distance to Posio grows. Of the five men in the group only one is asleep. The attitude has to be sharpened so I decide to eat the others food as revenge. We’ve heard uncertain rumours that Peltonen’s Valtio is only a piece of land in the middle of the swamp with orange string as borders. We cannot be certain about these stories. For this reason we take weapons, and juice and raisins as bribes in case of enemies. Valtio is situated about 8 km north of Posio. We know the place is within an area of about an acre. We’ve also heard that the locals can show us the precise spot. Only amateurs ask for advice, so we decide to search the area independently. After a little running about we come to the conclusion that we are ont the right spot. We start to follow the Muikkilampipuro slowly but vehemently. One hour and thirty minutes, subtropical hailstorm (sic), rainfall, bugs, depression – crisis. And we can’t find Valtio. With wet socks on our feet we decide to ask for advice. Round two. We decide that without finding Valtio we wont go home. We’re close to the jackpot. We get lost on a cliff, which is surrounded by red stockings. Orange string and red fabric are not far from each other so we believe we’ve found Valtio. Our instincts then tell us; maybe this is only a decoy by Peltonen. We continue onwards in the terrain. And finally next to the Muikkulampipuro we see orange string and a fallen flag. Valtio is ahead, ugly and defenceless! There is no-one there except blackflies/buffalo gnats. The bugs are really disgusting and bloodsucking so we head back. As a token of our victory we take the Valtio flag. Ari Peltonen can come and fetch it humbly at editors, the condition being that this plotting against Finland stops. We start the car and leave quickly. On the way home everyone is happy, only a steady banging sounds in the van – those pesky flies! "Accented" letters

As some of us remember, there were big rows about Teemu Selänne's name, see the talk page. A lot English-language editors want to remove diacritics and accented letters from Wikipedia. This is not valid in Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian etc., because the letters are not just "accented", but completely different letters. Now there is a dispute on Talk:Kimi Räikkönen, people wanting to change it to "Raikkonen". Raikkonen in fact is a completely different last name, used by 16 persons in Finland.

Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English) is very misguided, and only says "there is a disagreement". Therefore there is no common policy on the issue, but it's clear for us atleast that "Raikkonen" can't be used.

Perhaps Swedish provides the best example, if a word contains both Å and Ä, both would be rendered as A. This is utterly wrong, completely different letters. I suggest that everyone should keep an eye on the issue and provide assistance on talk pages. --Pudeo⺮ 14:03, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

There might be something to write about the usage of place names in text describing history. See Talk:Raseborg Castle, Clarifier has written a nice text about it. The current names are used in history chapters also, except articles like Treaty of Fredrikshamn? Help with "Diddú"

Hi, we could do with some help with the article "Diddú", which I created recently. According to fellow editor Stefán, the website http://www.akirkja.is/?obj=sida&id=176&uid=0,104 states that Diddú, an Icelandic opera singer, was made a "grand master" of the Order of the Lion of Finland in 1997. Stefán feels this is "very implausible", but she may well have been awarded some other class of the order. Could a Finnish speaker help to clarify this point? Do post your comments at "Talk:Diddú". Hello,

I found the article Kuikka-Koponen on the notability backlog for April. Notability has probably been questioned because no sources were given. Now the Finnish version of the article does cite a number of sources, probably biographies of the person in question. Ideally these should be added to the English article too. 200th anniversary of the Finnish War

The Finnish War started on February 21, 1808 and lasted for about a year, leading up to the establishment of the Grand Duchy of Finland. The 200th anniversary of these events are likely to be covered by media in the coming year, and this is a great chance for us to shape up the related Wikipedia articles in English as well as in Finnish, Swedish, and Russian. My problem is this: User:91.154.125.14 has removed Category:Former municipalities of Finland from articles like Zaporozhskoye and Sosnovo, Leningrad Oblast and then inserted it into redirects, such as Kirvu and Viipuri, thus effectively burying the whole category.

I think the edits should be reverted for the simple reason that having categories in redirects is inane (who the hell checks redirects anyway?). But another option has also crossed my mind: why not make individual articles for the old municipalities?

Reason for categorizing redirects is that people can find information more easily. For example if a Finnish person is going through Category:Former municipalities of Finland, they are going to search for Viipuri, not Vyborg. --Mika1h (talk) 17:00, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

I see that Nokia phones are part of this project. For your information the mobile phone Nokia 1200 has been deleted and the former page changed to a redirect and protected from editing. Re: Raptori

I am currently attempting to expand the Article Raptori, and have serious questions concerning references on the original Article fi:Raptori. I found no talk page fi:Keskustelu:Raptori, as of 05:08, 18 March 2008 (UTC), at the Finnish Wikipedia, which I presume to have counterparts to the English WikiProject Biography, WikiProject Albums, and WikiProject Songs; apparently little discussion has gone into the original Article. Could a current Finnish Wikipedia User on this WikiProject please look into creating the aforementioned fi:Keskustelu:Raptori, pre-Templated for the applicable WikiProjects on the Finnish Wikipedia?

Furthermore, I am working on an Article in alpha on this group's single "Debi Gibson," currently having no counterpart on the Finnish Wikipedia (fi:Debi Gibson is currently a redirect to a translation into Finn of the English Article Debbie Gibson (WikiProject Biography), rather than an Article on the Raptori single, released by Megamania Records in the early 1990's). What information is there in English about the song's Publisher, production personnel, &c.?

Provinces, regions and historical provinces

User:PKo, who is apparently the same person as fi:User:PekKos has taken a dispute from fi-Wikipedia to the English-speaking one. He has repeatedly:

• re-created the page Satakunta (historical province), although it was merged by consensus to the article Satakunta, which includes both the modern region and the historical province.
• moved the page Finnish Karelia to Karelia (historical province of Finland), editing it strongly without any discussion. In my opinion, this article should be moved back.
• moved the page Laponia (historical province) to Laponia (historical province of Finland), changing the entire topic of the article.

I have tried discussing these points with him, but to no avail. As the whole article structure of Finnish sub-regions is concerned, I feel this is a topic for the project to discuss.

Tórshavn and Mariehamn

Hi, I am looking for a printed source for how one cooks Gyromitra esculenta aka Korvasieni in Finnish Cuisine. All English language mushroom books just tell folks to steer well clear of it, so are not much help. Finnish Cookbooks aren't particularly popular here in Australia...

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

• The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
• The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
• A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Based on a search of Wikipedia's articles related to Finland, I've found some articles that I believe are about places in Finland, and could usefully have geographical coordinates added.

The articles in question are listed in Category:Finland articles missing geocoordinate data. At the time of writing, some examples included:

4. Loimaan kunta
5. Maritime Museum, Helsinki

...and there are many more, as well. At the time of posting this notice, there were 226 articles in this category needing geographical coordinates.

Why add coordinates?

By adding coordinates, a Wikipedia reader can easily view the location on a street map, nautical chart, topographic map, by satellite photo, realtime weather map, and in many other ways. Coordinate data makes an article eventually appear in various services such as Google Maps' Wikipedia overlay, Google Earth, and Wikipedia's own internal map service. Coordinate data also helps readers looking for geographically-based data, such as locations near a reference point, or related information.

How can I do it?

The articles are all marked with {{coord missing}} tags, which need to be replaced with {{coord}} tags that contain the location's latitude/longitude coordinates; or you might be able to add coordinates to an existing infobox. We have in fiwiki Str4ndBOT which update some templates:

• Template:Suomen kunta/väkiluku which tracks automatically Finland municipalities population count (updated once in month from Population Register Center of Finland using always latest available data)
• Template:Suomen kunta/väkiluku/järjestysnumero which tracks population sequence number (example Turku is fifth largest municipality in Finland when population is compared)

We also have acreage data which is updated manually once in year from Land Survey of Finland containing following templates:

• Template:Suomen kunta/pinta-ala containing every Finland municipality total acreage, land acreage, sea acreage and inland waters acreage
• Template:Suomen kunta/pinta-ala/järjestysnumero containing acreage sequence number (for example Turku is 313. largest municipality in Finland when acreage is compared)

Finally we have every municipality current tax rate in Template:Suomen kunta/vero which is updated manually from Tax Administration of Finland once per year.

All templates mentioned do not format numeric values so using these for example in population density calculation is possible. Date values are formatted as ISO 8601 so every date can be formatted to enwiki format with {{#time}}. Of course templates can also output reference link for data.

If project is interested for these, following is needed:

1. Do you have bot which could fetch values from fiwiki templates in enwiki equivalents? If no, then we need to think if Str4ndBOT would request bot flag (if Str4nd have time to run bot in multiple wikis, I'm going to ask this next) or would this update be done by manually (could be painfull operation, Finland have 415 municipalities)
2. List of Finland municipalities here in enwiki: this is needed because example Nokia tells about company and Nokia, Finland is used for city named Nokia
3. Some template-wiz who can implement our templates here in enwiki: code works of course here as it works in fiwiki but documentation etc. should be done someone who knows enwiki template best practises

Could someone point out bot owner who's bot would be cabable to read data from fiwiki (or from toolserver) and replace values in templates here in enwiki? Broken formatnum usage

The formatnum magic word is being used incorrectly on a number of Finnish town articles. The correct usage is {{formatnum:...}}, not {{formatnum|...}} as it is not a template. The {{formatnum}} template should not be used, as it achieves nothing. Vandalism of Nokia articles

The Nokia articles are tagged as being part of Wikiproject Finland so I thought I'd report the following here. This user (Special:Contributions/78.185.130.25 has vandalised the dates on a number of articles about Nokia phones, he/she appears to be a regular vandal, targeting articles connected with the Grand theft Auto video game, Turkish Musicians + 1 other random range of connected articles. Last time his random range was cars made by Peugeot, this time its Nokia phones. Might be worthwhile watchlisting them just incase he returns. - X201 (talk) 09:41, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Translation request

I have just (nearly) completed a total overhaul of Wikipedia's translation system. Previously, there was a very complicated method of posting translation requests. Now there are simply tags, such as {{Expand Finnish}}, that can be placed on stub articles (or longer articles if appropriate). I have tried to review all previous translation requests. Many translation requests were very old and no longer seemed needed, because the English Wikipedia article had developed in the meantime. Other translation requests were fixed by adding tags to existing English-language articles. Other articles I generally could create stubs myself that I could add the tags to. But Wikipedia:Translation/Kultala I didn't think I could do well enough to withstand deletion. Hopefully people here can create a stub for this, and tag it with {{Expand Finnish}}, so that translation can take place later. Technical drawing tools article - help requested

I was doing some research about William Stanley (Victorian inventor) and came across the above article on the Finnish Wikipedia. I have used Google Translate (and did a little bit of tidying up myself), but I don't read Finnish!

Is it possible for someone (especially if they know the subject area!) to have a look at the article, and at a minimum translate the words which Google Translate didn't? (I've put a question mark in front of any words that weren't translated, e.g. ?example.)

Some of the words which Google didn't translate I could find by looking at the original word in Finnish, looking that up on the Finnish Wikipedia, and then going to the 'English' translation - but many others I couldn't do this for!

A few of the areas are Finland-centric, but as I don't know the English equivalent, I've left them in, in the hopes that someone can correct it!

If the missing terms can be translated, I can look at it again for a clean-up, and then refer it to the relevant WikiProject for Technical Drawing, so that someone with expertise in that area can polish it up.

When I get a chance next week, I am going to copy the pictures in the original Finnish article over to Commons (copyright allowing) and then add those to the English-language entry.

Any help from Finnish-speaking editors would be very welcome!

FYI - A massive discussion is taking place at a Request for comment (RfC) Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Biographies of living people. About 50k of articles are currently unreferenced and therefore in danger of deletion, some of those are on Finish subjects (like Jaakko Syrjä speedy deleted for being unreferenced; Ior Bock, proposed for deletion for that reason, but now referenced). The cleanup link in the title above points to a list of unreferenced articles with the WikiProject Finland template on its talk page. I will add the proper template on the main page to have a bot generate the list after some days (hopefully). Please revise articles on the list, when possible

1. review them for contentious unsourced information pr WP:BLP concerns
2. add references (you may e.g. lift references from the Finish page, if that page exists)
3. remove the {{BLP unsourced}} template from the article.

Should Nokia phone models be in project scope?

Currently several dozens of Nokia phone models are in WP:Finland scope (tagged with project template in talk page: Talk:Nokia 1100). Is it really necessary to mark every phone model Nokia makes as part of wikiproject Finland? Nokia itself, certainly, and perhaps some of the phone models, but every one of them? Combating nationalist bias with... nationalist bias

Is Anders Chydenius Finnish or Swedish? This is a question I've had to face after making an innocent edit that did not go down well with certain editors.

On January 31st I added the Finnish IPA pronunciation of Chydenius's name and deleted the word "integral" from "Sotkamo (then an integral part of Sweden)" as I thought it was superfluous.

On February 2nd Aaker reverted my edits, leaving the following message: "Why add Finnish pronunciation to a Swedish name on English Wikipedia?".

I reverted his edits on February 3rd, and on the same day Narking reverted mine, leaving the following message: "Swedish name, born in Sweden".

Narking also went as far as changing the following sentence from "Born in Sotkamo in northeastern Finland (then part of Sweden)" to "Born in Sotkamo, Ostrobothnia, Sweden (today in northeastern Finland)", changing it completely to underline Chydenius's Swedishness even more than previously, as if adding insult to injury. I feel that this belittles Chydenius's ties to Finland, where he effectively spent a great part of his life, even dying there.

I understand that Chydenius is important to both Swedish and Finnish history, such a wonderful man he was, but why can't we have the Finnish pronunciation up there along with a Swedish one? It would bring something helpful to the article, even for those native speakers of Finnish and Swedish who may not be sure of how his name should be pronounced correctly.

I didn't think that would become a huge problem, but unfortunately, as Wikipedia tends to have the perfect framework for nationalistic disputes, it was not surprising.

What I did was to write in the way that has been done in other articles. In other words we use the geography of the time. Therefore Immanuel Kant was born in Königsberg, Prussia and not Kaliningrad, Russia, Nikolai Gogol and L. L. Zamenhof in the Russian Empire and not in modern Ukraine or Poland etc. Of course the present geography should be mentioned as well, but first the one the person in question was living with. I think we can treat this as a matter of which historical perspective to use, rather than immediately assuming nationalist bias and risking locked positions and high-voiced argumentation. On substance, I basically agree with Närking; since Chydenius lived his entire life (1729-1803) before 1809 there is little ambiguity as to formal nationality. However, I don't mind phrases like "Ostrobotnia, then Sweden (now Finland)" which with that small addition is both historically correct and perhaps more informative to readers less versed in history, whom we also need to cater to. IPA could be helpful, but for a Swedish-language name it should reasonably be IPA for Swedish + IPA for Finnish only if it happens to be different. IPA in Finnish only for a Swedish-language name looks a bit strange. Tomas e (talk) 22:33, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

He is obviously both Finnish and Swedish. Not only was he born in Sweden *and* Finland, in the same way as you can be born in Sweden and Uppland, he was a Finland-Swede. It's ridiculous to try to make him one or the other. I changed the IPA to just say "pronounced" instead of "Finnish pronunciation". Not being Finnish, I'm not sure, but I believe the difference isn't significant. If it is, it should probably have both. When it comes to the location of his birth we need to recognize that Sotkamo is not a place that once was a part of Sweden, but now has passed into Finnish hands. Even when it was a part of Sweden, it was also a part of Finland. By the way, what actually is the source of the "finnish" pronounciation? As far as I have heard the name Chydenius in spoken finnish (Anders Chydenius or Kaj Chydenius) the pronounciation has been same as in swedish, and if the pronounciation has been different in, say, 1700s, that is very probably a matter of time rather than language. I've changed it to a standard Swedish pronunciation. However, I know that Finland-Swedish differs in some aspects, for example the "rs" in Anders are not merged to "ʂ" (am I right?). However, I strongly doubt that the "A" in anders is pronounced "ɑ" and that the "u" in Chydenius is pronounced "u". Therefore the previous transcription was either Finnish or wrong. Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons

The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 35,715 as of May 1. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.

re Finland geo-stubs

This issue has been open since January 2010. We can't just leave this hanging forever. I have written what I hope might be a compromise solution (at least for the time being) which has the virtue of being extremely easy to implement. Its described in the comment under my name (which is currently the last comment), here.

Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

In Finnish I suppose, as he is a Finn ;-) Not easy to grasp based on English - and the autotranslations are usually horrible.

I checked the article superficially. The sources are not that good (e.g. 7 päivää is a gossip paper), but I have no reason to doubt the facts - they have been noticed also in more serious sources. Just tell if there is something special to be checked. (And please think about BLP also here: a parenthetic episode is not worth mentioning in that way.)

There is currently a redirect at the title Amerikka, Finland pointing to Amerika (disambiguation), which offers no relevant entries. This redirect has been nominated at RfD, and in looking at it I've discovered there is a village with this name in the Vieremä municipality, but no other information about it. Ridnitsohkka - not the second highest point

There is no such thing as a second highest point. There is one point which is the highest and for every other there is one (and in fact many more) other points which are higher and still in Finland. Category:Imperial Russian people by occupation

Category:Imperial Russian people by occupation is being considered for merger. Since in the 19th-century Finland was part of the Russian Empire this has potential to effect how articles on Finnish people are categorized.John Pack Lambert (talk) 00:14, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

One of the arguments that has been used to oppose the (sensible) merger proposal is that Finns born in the Duchy of Finland would somehow be happier being called "Imperial Russians" instead of simply "Russians". Finland proper vs Southwest Finland

Hello, I work in the regional council of Southwest Finland and we have encountered some problems with the wrong name of the province here in Wikipedia (english). It is not called Finland proper, I am wondering how and if it is possible to change this? I think there are several levels of confusion, which make using correct terms difficult. The first is that there are several entities called Southwest Finland or Finland Proper, both historic and current and both formal and informal.

While the council calls itself "Regional Council of Southwest Finland", this does not mean that "Southwest Finland" is the best name to use in an encyclopaedia for the province or for the region (by any or all definitions). Pointers to relevant discussions and decisions on the matter would be helpful for us to be able to judge what name to use in different contexts. I note that the official names are Varsinais-Suomi, Egentliga Finland ("Finland proper"), not Lounais-Suomi or Sydvästra Finland ("Southwest Finland").

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. Expanding and revising the article on Human trafficking in Finland

Hello! My name is Anniina and I am currently an undergraduate at Rice University. I am in a Poverty, Justice and Human Capabilities class, and for an assignment for that class I am going to start revising and expanding the article on Human trafficking in Finland. I am planning on building a whole new structure of sections and subsections, redistributing the existing information into these new sections as well as adding new information. The victims and the help the victims receive are also going to have their own sections. I would like to include a more comprehensive section on the prevention of human trafficking in Finland; what kinds of organizations there are, how the public health sector contributes and what challenges there are for the preventing work that takes place. I will also find more sources and work on improving the citations of the existing article. In addition, I want to talk about the specific laws in Finland that deal with human trafficking. Does anyone have an opinion on whether I should link the section to the Finnish law article, even though the article is basically nonexistent? My goal is to improve the article on Human Trafficking in Finland as much as I possibly can, and therefore I would gladly welcome any tips, ideas or advice anyone might have. Thank you! Sibelius' 150th anniversary

In connection with the 150th anniversary of Sibelius' birth on 8 December, I am trying to coordinate improvements to the Jean Sibelius article. I think we should try to aim for GA over the next few weeks, possibly going for FAC later. In my opinion, the article needs far better sourcing (at the moment it seems to rely mainly on one published biography), better coverage of his music and musical style, and more information on the concerts and events to be held for his anniversary. I look forward to further suggestions on the article's talk page. A good start might be to compile a list of the main published biographies on which we can draw. Although I can cope with Swedish, I am unable to read Finnish. It would therefore be extremely useful if we could find one or two Finns willing to assist. I have not yet received much support on Sibelius but perhaps some of the WikiProject members based in Finland could help with improving the Sibelius images. Most of those currently used in the EN and other wikis have serious copyright problems. There are certainly lots of good photographs published in Finnish/Swedish encylopedias from around 1900 as well as in early biographies, the press and in concert programmes. Help finding sources?

Hey, I was wondering if anyone had heard of the Joris Jofel series. It looks like it was released in the US under the title Leo Leggins book series. Finland 100 - preliminary announcement

(As this project seems rather inactive, I am writing well in advance.) Finland will celebrate 100 years of independence in 2017. In fi-wiki, we have a campaign of improving 100 central articles about Finland. Last week a milestone was reached: 50 of them have a status (such as FA, GA), none is a stub, all have at least some inline citations. We plan to organize an international challenge in November 2017 (in style of Wikipedia:Catalan culture challenge.) However, to make is a success, we need decent articles in English. So I welcome everyone to improve the English pages, especially by adding inline citations and External links in English. The Non-Finnish Language Council for Deciding How Finns Should Name their Cities, or ... ?

Hi, I am wondering about the international name for Finland's capital; and is the Language Council of Norway known for its expertise about the subject? One of the patrollers at wikipedia in Norwegian is adamant that the council is the leading source regarding that the international name for Finland's capital. This diff [3] shows removal of info that Helsinki is the name, and that the capital is also known as Helsingfors (and the reference is Norway's leading encyclopedia, Store norske leksikon). I am questioning how much weight international encyclopedias - including wikipedias - should give to the government agency (of a nation that was a Swedish colony for 91 years - until 1905) that insists on using a Swedish name for Finland's capital. If keeping Swedish language out of the equation, what is Finland's capital's international name? I do not think cities have "international" names, just names in different languages (check Vienna and Rome for starters). As Finland has two official languages, many of its towns have two official names. --Tappinen (talk) 04:38, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

You are asking about the Norwegian Wikipedia. The way to go on both the English and Norwegian Wikipedia would be to use the common name (no:WP:COMMONNAME) as it is used in the majority of reliable sources in the relevant language. The common name may or may not be the "official", "international" or some other designated name. The common name for the capital of Finland in English would without a doubt be Helsinki. – Finnusertop (talk ⋅ contribs) 19:42, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

I think it's pretty obvious that Norwegian Wikipedia should follow the official recommendations for using the Norwegian language. If there is a respected establishment saying that the Swedish form should be preferred, then be it so. Helsinki definitely has two names, although outside of the Nordic countries the Swedish name is not very well known. I don't see this is any different from that Germany is called so in en-wiki, Tyskland in no-wiki and Deutschland in de-wiki. --hydrox (talk) 11:05, 2 May 2016 (UTC)

Einojuhani Rautavaara

Einojuhani Rautavaara, great Finnish composer and one of my favorites, died on July 27, aged 87. I would like the article to be featured on the main page in Recent Deaths section, and I nominated it at Wikipedia:In the news/Candidates#July 27. However, the article is so poorly sourced that it's not going to fly. I would appreciate a helping hand there, as I'm going off to sleep and can't get to it before tomorrow morning. Cannabis in Finland needs improvement

We have a new article Cannabis in Finland, but it could really use improvement and expansion, especially from anyone who can read Finnish sources. With a little polishing, it'd also be really useful to make a translated version for Finnish Wikipedia since it's a topic of increasing interesting these days. Ugh, some misconceptions in that article. I changed to not say that cannabis is decriminalised in Finland. The 2001 reform did not aim at decriminsalisation but on the contrary to make it more efficient to enforce personal drug use and subject more users to criminal justice. --hydrox (talk) 12:44, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

Finland100 approaching

In December 6th 2017 Finland will celebrate her 100th birthday. In fi-wiki we have had a project fi:Wikipedia:Wikiprojekti Suomi 100. We have a list of 100 articles related to Finland. These are displayed on our front page during this year. All these articles have been through some kind of peer review, and reached the status of featured, good or "OK" articles. The corresponding English articles have at least one external link, but there is certainly room for improvement.

We plan to have a "Centenary Birthday Challenge" in November, to get the 100 articles translated to other languages. While there will be some people bravely translating from Finnish, I guess many participants will use the English version as their starting point.

Moomins - when?

Challenge: 100 years of Finland

On December 6th 2017 Finland will celebrate her 100th birthday. To mark the occasion, Wikimedia Suomi organises a public editing competition during November. The goal of this is to improve and translate articles from a list of 100 topics related to Finland into as many languages as possible. Subjects range from Jari Litmanen to Finnish sauna, from Tove Jansson to Maternity package. The list is here.

To participate, create an account in Wikipedia (if you do not have one yet), and register on this page. Winners will receive prizes, other participants may be granted other levels of recognition.

The contributions by members of this group would be extremely valuable, as for most of the articles, the fi-version is better than en-version, and still many participants will probably translate from English. Häme

The article Häme has been tagged as a disambiguation page and has attracted a further clean-up tag. It is not really a disambiguation page at all, it is an article about Häme. I have therefore removed {{disambiguation}} and replaced it with {{Finland-geo-stub}}, and removed the Talk page banner for Wikiproject disambiguation and replaced it with the one for Finland. In fi-wikipedia fi:Häme stands for the historical province. So, I would say that the primnary and original meaning for the word still nowadays would be the historical province. (Even though the borders of the vernacular region may not totally coincide with the historuical province.) In english language context the naming of articles may, however, also depend on how the names of each areal unit the names of which in finnish contain the word "Häme" are translated or not translated in english language contexts. de:Häme is not bad. Actually though in fi:Hämeen lääni Häme is in genitive: "Province of Häme", like fi:Turun ja Porin lääni, "Province of Turku and Pori", so the name of the province (in sense of fi:Lääni / sv:Län) does not mean that the name of the province would be Häme but that the province is named after or centered in Häme. In swedish it is sv:Tavastehus län but because the name in Finnish would be "Hämeenlinnan lääni" (litterally: "The province of the castle of Häme"), the shorter form "Hämeen lääni", litterally: "The province of Häme or Häme Province has been chosen. This also tells that finally the original and primary meaning of the name fi:Häme or sv:Tavastland is not the province in sense fi:Lääni / sv:Län, but historical province in sense fi: "historiallinen maakunta" / sv: "historisk landskap".--Urjanhai (talk) 17:04, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

The only question then would be which english language name one should use of this historical province (fi: "historiallinen maakunta" / sv: "historisk landskap") with the name fi:Häme / sv:Tavastland when writing in english. Would it be "Häme" (the Finnish form) or "Tavastia" (the Latin form). Here it seems to be "Tavastia" except for "Häme province". But not even the historical province is the original meaning, because the historical provinces oh Satakunta (sv:Satakunda) and Uusimaa (sv:Nyland) are younger than Häme in its original meaning. Template Eduskunta - change it to English version of the website?

Template {{Eduskunta}} is an easy way to produce a neat source link. Would it be better to change the language setting from Finnish to English? The URLs are almost the same: FI -> EN and Sivut -> Pages. This is a very good source to use, but because the citation says "(in Finnish)", maybe readers don't even want to open it? Much of the text is in Finnish also in the English version, but at least the names of the positions are in English. -kyykaarme (talk) 13:57, 24 February 2018 (UTC)
