An edit-a-thon focused on FindingGLAM – updating and creating articles about galleries, libraries, archives and museums in Canterbury. The FindingGLAM Challenge page is here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/FindingGLAMs

What's it about? edit

An edit-a-thon is an attempt to improve the Wikipedia pages on a particular topic. Led by an experienced Wikipedia editor, participants learn to edit pages, correct mistakes, add references, and upload photos. Complete beginners are welcome; training and troubleshooting is provided. Some of us will be working on Wikidata and others will be creating Wikipedia content (new pages and add to existing pages).

When and where edit

  • Thursday, 20 February 2020, 7.30p.m. onwards
  • ViaStrada office on Kilmore Street; above Pomeroy's pub (directions)

What to bring edit

  • Laptop and power cord. There is wifi you can use.
  • Any snacks and drink you want.

Preparation edit

If you're coming, try to create a Wikipedia account beforehand! Here's a form you can use. Creating an account makes editing much easier (more info). You'll need to pick a "handle" for your username; you could use your real name, but it's nicer to have the option to be a bit anonymous if you want.

Have a think about topics you'd like to work on. Check out their pages and see if there are obvious mistakes or problems. Maybe even do a little research first so you're prepared. Bring along references for information you want to add. If the topic you're interested in doesn't have a Wikipedia page, we could even create one.

Outcomes edit

  • MurielMary remotely participated by creating articles:
Notes for our future edit-a-thons
  • It's handy to prepare what to do ahead - at least insert the key links into "To do" section. Mix up Wikipedia / Wikidata / Wikimedia Commons tasks
  • It's good to stay realistic about the results and rather finish 1 activity properly than leave a few unfinished projects
  • If the main purpose was to have fun with Wiki, we can proclaim it as a successful event :)
