Meetup code of conduct and anonymity when meeting via video conference edit

All attendees are expected to understand and abide by the Universal Code of Conduct for the Wikimedia Movement.

This video conferencing meetup is a replacement for an in-person meetup. While attending and remaining anonymous is supported by the group, lurking is not supported and will be actively discouraged. All attendees are expected to use their User name as an identifier on the video conference call and to introduce themselves and their interest in joining the call on the chat channel of the call as a minimum. Participation using video and / or voice in addition to Chat is encouraged but not required.

Some members of the group have been the target of cyber bullying in the past and these measures are intended to support creating a safe space for collaboration.

If a new attendee joins the group with video and voice disabled, they will be encouraged to participate by the facilitator, using this script:

Welcome new attendee. This group respects your right to remain anonymous. This group has a policy of discouraging lurking as it makes some of us uncomfortable. If you are happy to introduce yourself over voice, please let us know what you've been working on and if you need help with any editing issues.
If you're not comfortable updating the group by voice, then that's okay. You have the option of introducing yourself and adding your user page link into the chat feature. The chat is deleted once the video conference finishes.
If you want to remain completely anonymous and not chat, then this meetup is not for you. We make comprehensive and extensive notes of the meetup that will be included in the meetup page afterwards. That's the best way to catch up with what this meetup has been doing if you don't want to contribute during the video call.
If you're not sure how to use the chat feature you can access it by clicking on the icon that looks like a speech bubble in the bottom left corner.

If, after an appropriate length of time, the new attendee does not participate by video, voice, or chat, the facilitator of the group will remove the attendee from the video call.

If the new attendee persists in logging in, the group will discuss abandoning the meet up.

Chat for sharing pastes, URLs and so on edit

The Jitsi video conferencing platform has a chat feature. This is used to share URLs and other commentary while the discussions are occurring. The facilitators may take a copy to help with writing up outcomes from the meeting on the meeting Wikipedia page. Any copies will be deleted once outcomes and notes are completed.

Future meetups edit

1. Introduction to meet up by organisers

2. Wikimedia User Group of Aoteaora New Zealand Update and Discussion (15 minutes)

Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand Inc (WANZ)
  • Note: Transparency of meeting agendas and minutes is limited at the moment due to a lack of a website for WANZ. This is being worked on to make them publicly available. If you want copies please contact secretary-at-wikimedia.nz.
Update from President, WANZ

Work this month has included:

  • organising an in-person strategy and planning weekend for the WANZ committee. We've held this once before and it was very useful in ensuring the committee was invested in and agreed with the ways of working, direction of WANZ and the strategic priorities. We made significant progress on various pieces of work last time and we're hoping to replicate that again this year. The strategy weekend is happening on the weekend of 22/23 July in Wellington. There's a pay-your-own-way social event happening on Friday 21 July if anyone is in Wellington and wants to join those of us committee members who are already in Wellington.
  • writing a letter in support of the Lottery Grants application by Maanaki Whenua Landcare Research for the digitisation and upload of a large photographic slide collection into Wikimedia Commons. The slides include images of a number of species, scientific expeditions, collecting activities, off shore islands and also expeditions and collecting trips to the Pacific Islands. This last group is interesting as it includes images of members of local communities helping Maanaki Whenua Landcare Research staff and activities.
  • connecting with James Taylor from Auckland War Memorial Museum. James updated the WANZ committee members on the progress of the Auckland Museum project. I updated James on the success of the WANZ general funds application to Wikimedia Foundation and the 2023/24 plan of activities. Meeting notes are available at this google docs link.
  • We've been developing the membership process for the Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand incorporated society and we're now regularly accepting membership applications, considering and approving applications at the monthly committee meeting. If you aren't yet a member of the incorporated society I greatly encourage you to read this document on why being a member is important.. Please do consider joining us.

Einebillion (talk)

Update from Treasurer, WANZ
  • Work has included developing the process for making grants, membership application administration, plus preliminary steps towards implementing an online accounting package. This will be necessary to help manage the increased scale of operations we expect with the new multi-year funding from WMF. Also drafted an initial version of a Request for Proposal for our planned 2023/24 Wikipedian-at-large project. This will need to be advertised soon if we are to avoid schedule "drift" and under-expenditure in the first year of the new grant.

Marshelec (talk)

3. Wiki-Con Weekends, Editathons, Events and Outreach in 2023

Don't forget to add your program to the Campaign Dashboard. The Dashboard is a key tracking tool for reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation and will help us ensure that we get funding in future years. If you are unsure how to add programs to the Campaign dashboard contact: Ambrosia10 (talk) on her talk page
  • New Zealand Wikidata Thesis Project aims to get New Zealand dissertations into Wikidata. Project Page, Project Dashboard. DrThneed has been furiously adding 'main subject' statements to try to get all theses covered (we were at 52% of theses with at least one statement, now we are at 65% and counting).
Congratulations to DrThneed for her successful application to present on the project at the LIANZA 2023 conference in Christchurch later this year.
You can help: Video on how to add thesis to people's pages has been completed.
Project Contacts: DrThneed, Giantflightlessbirds and Ambrosia10
  • 2023 August 16-19 Wikimania, Singapore and online New Zealand has their largest contingent going to Wikimania this year with an estimated 16 people having either recieved scholarships, grant funding, or project funding to attend. This is a huge opportunity to boost the Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand group as there is likely to be significant opportunities to learn from other affiliates, understand more about the Wikimedia Foundation structure and work process, and other affiliates projects. And, last but by no means least, learn more editing tips and tricks. Those that are attending include:
  • Other suggestions for themes around events include Library Week, Conservation Week, International Volunteers Day, 24hr editathon for Ada Lovelace Day, WikiSource Women's History Month for Wikisource, Winter Olympics, Matariki Event, Library Week. We should think about the focus of the work - is it to onboard folk or to focus on content. Any further update?
Anything to update / discuss?

Ambrosia10's report back to the Aotearoa New Zealand editing community on her Wikimedia Foundation funded attendance of SPNHC2023 edit

Part of the metrics gathered for this funding requires Ambrosia10 to formally report back to various Wiki communities on her participation in SPNHC2023.

Ambrosia10 has drafted up a detailed conference report that can be found here.
The links to the two presentations slides and scripts can be found here and here.
A conference report has been drafted in google docs and can be found here
The formal report back to the Wikimedia Foundation giving impact metrics and a financial report has also been submitted and can be found here. As well as giving an oral report to the Wellington Wikipedia meetup and the Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand meetup, I've also shared my conference report with WikiProject New Zealand via the project talk page, to the Wikidata WikiProject Biodiversity group via their Telegram feed and I have drafted a section in New Zealand's portion of the GLAM Wiki newsletter which will be published at the beginning of next month.
Today's oral report back to the Aotearoa New Zealand Wiki community will cover the following
  • Pre-conference engagement brought about as a result of social media posts
  • Presentations at the conference by Ambrosia10 and the reception of the attendees to the presentations
Ambrosia10's highlights of the conference - including
  • the two Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) workshops and learning more about the Darwin Core standard to assist in the creation of digital extended specimens and GBIFs efforts to work with this standard to empower institutions to provide data to empower the digital extended specimen.
  • the symposia about "Broadening Access and Use of Natural History Collections Through Innovative Approaches and Engagement"
  • the symposia about "Narrowing the Gaps: The role of digital infrastructure in shortening the distance between physical collections and their derivative research products"
  • Highlights of discussions had at the conference. Examples include Miranda Lowe from the Natural History Museum, London, Adania Flemming from University of Florida and the Florida Museum of Natural History , Ely Wallis from the Atlas of Living Australia, CSIRO and current chair of Biodiversity Information Standards TDWG (Taxonomic Databases Working Group), Deb Paul (the previous chair of TDWG) and now Biodiversity Informatics Community Liaison for the Species File Group, Shelley James for the Western Australia Herbarium and co organiser of TDWG2023, Austin Mast at the Florida State University and organiser of WeDigBio a twice annual transcription event and so many more.

4. Round table for participants to say what you’re working on and if you need help to do anything or want anything demonstrated – You can add requests for help here prior to the meeting if you want

  • Ambrosia10 Other than attending the SPNHC2023 conference and doing a lot of reports and reporting back, Ambrosia10 has been working on the Harvard Index of Botanists Wikidata mix'n'match dataset. She's also created a very stubby article on New Zealand's Chief Archivist Anahera_Morehu. By now there should hopefully be more press coverage so if folk feel keen could they consider expanding it, as it is very stubby! She's also been preparing to present to the Natural History team at Te Papa this coming Friday on Bionomia and by extension Wikidata. She's having a meeting on Tuesday with a Smithsonian Institute intern Katie Wedderstrand and her supervisor Holly Little. Katie will be working to identify the women associated with the Fossil collections at the Smithsonian this summer. Katie started on the project last week and has quickly delved into building out our list of people to work on, learning more about Wikidata and Bionomia in parallel. This project is part of the Because of Her Story Internship Program under the American Women’s History Initiative. Holly reached out to Ambrosia10 during SPNHC2023 so its yet another benefit coming from in person attendance at that conference.
  • Marshelec's work in the past month includes a collaborative project with Wainuiomartian on a substantial new article CentrePort Wellington. This led to expansion of Wellington Harbour Board and Reclamation of Wellington Harbour- although there is more to do on these. Also did some expansion of Matiu / Somes Island and then responded to the GA review of this article that is underway. At present, the featured article Kākāpō is undergoing extensive review and improvement by multiple editors, to avoid it being delisted. Marshelec has made a small contribution and plans to do more. New articles created by Marshelec this month include: The White Swan Hotel, Greytown and Colin Pugh Sports Bowl. Also did a major rewrite and expansion of Pariwhero / Red Rocks. Also expanded New Zealand performing arts venues, and contributed weekly updates of Wikipedia:WikiProject New Zealand/Critter of the Week. Marshelec has been active as a reviewer for Articles for Creation and has put considerable time into supporting a new user with Draft:Jason Connor - although this still has a long way to go. A draft article that was accepted after some tidy up was: Nate Wilbourne about a teenage environmental activist from Nelson. This work led on to some minor improvements to Wharariki Ecosanctuary and Farewell Spit.
  • David Nind has mainly worked on Wikisource. All the pages for Life and Work of Richard John Seddon are now validated and it is ready for "transclusion" - thanks to everyone who has proofread and validated pages! Also validated NZ Institute/Royal Society Acts in Wikisource, and added Wikidata items and two additional Acts.
  • DrThneed has been adding main subject statements to theses in Wikidata, as mentioned above. She is also exploring other visualisations based on main subject statements, e.g. which taxa are best covered, a map of places mentioned in theses, what occupation you should have if you want someone to write a thesis about you, that sort of thing (see the thesis Wikidata project page). She'd love suggestions if you can think of interesting angles to take! DrThneed has had her talk on the thesis project accepted at Wikimania. Also planning a second Women in Architecture event as part of the heritage festival later in the year. Last week DrThneed and Mike did a presentation on copyright for scientists at the Department of Anatomy at Otago.
  • Oronsay has done some work on NZ Thesis Project and the Aussie King's Birthday Honours. Lots of work in the back room of the Women in Red project, including digging out articles that are linked to Wikidata but don't even have "instance of". User:Tagishsimon seems to have disappeared for last 3 weeks, not on Wiki and no Twitter account. Concerned because of his great help to WIR and Wikidata generally. Interviewed by Phillip Adams for Late Night Live with Jess Wade. See link for interview
  • Paora - Worked on King's Birthday honours list - Axel and he were up early putting that all that up on Wikipedia. Three Dames companions - none had articles but now they do. One knight companion didn’t have an article which he fixed. He's also been doing the usual Wiki gardening, a few people died who didn't have articles that have now have articles. Also mentioned an article that has been nominated for deletion Rebecca Bellingham article that folk may want to look at.
  • MargaretRDonald (talk) - Working on Korean articles in Wikipedia. Also Wikidata items that don’t have English labels but have 2-3 wikipedias. Korea was occupied in 1910 - 1945 & ruled by Japanese. Working on this content in both Wikidata and Wikipedia and finding it interesting to enrich. In particular information on Korean language advocates. Editing Community is small in Korea.
  • Beeswaxcandle (talk) - Doing a lot of Admin work for Wikisource because Wikisource is getting SPAMed a lot. He’s completed one book and has nearly finished reading a book in order to share recording. He's started looking for next project - wants to do NZ fiction - he can’t find scans of books on Harthi etc He wants folk to look for/find scans. He’s getting tired of transactions and having a break. Reader of fiction - he’d like to get back into it. He also did an Anthony Trollop book on the clergymen of England.
  • Prosperosity - Working on East Auckland, and more history project content. Also his Wikidata geo coordinates project. Fixing multiple issues and ensured 400 project deleted pages as a result! Talking about Geonames, old maps etc. which have places that aren’t actually in NZ Gazetteer. He contacted them explaining how it works. 2 maps considered “official” govt map, admiralty map etc not geologists or scientific publications, by mapping service, even commercial. Features are too big for a map.
  • Jonathanischoice - working on New Caledonian articles particularly about the currency. Updated scanned images of coins and put on commons. Changed coins in January of this year. Musical instrument articles and got some articles to good article status. Ross Harris lecturer at Victoria University so he’s been doing work improving his article. Worked on Currency categories on commons and fiddled around with categories. Discussed Araucaria columnaris.
  • Einebillion - Working on New Zealand medal recipient dataset - Victoria uni history group. Trying to see who is significant in Wikidata using that list. Mostly doing editing in WikiTree in order to get them into Wikidata. Doing president work.

5. Review of questions raised during round table

  • Commons categories: options for categorising the 2,000+ items (Acts) in Law of New Zealand - ideally I would like to organise by name (with an A-Z index) and year to help more quickly find and locate the document you are after. David Nind

6. Further discussion

  • Wikisource "translcusion": if someone could walk me through how to transclude a book, or is prepared to demo, perhaps using Life and Work of Richard John Seddon. (David Nind)
  • Demo of Cat-al-lot (if of interest): a Commons gadget for working with categories, including moving items between categories in bulk. (David Nind)

7. Wiki Community notices/information

  • A great blog about Wikidata and awards with queries to assist in modelling data etc
  • Copyright activism - The GLAMwiki newsletter had an interesting special story that can be seen here. The Global Advocacy team, in collaboration with others at the Foundation, are launching a mapping project to compile the public policy advocacy initiatives that affiliates and community members have pursued for governments to preserve or change copyright policies. Might be worth keeping this in mind if the Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand committee wants to make submissions to lawmakers on copyright given the UK trade agreement - Ambrosia10 (talk)
  • GLAMwiki draft newsletter for June - please add any GLAM wiki work you've been undertaking and would like to inform the community about.
  • Wikidata Lab XXXVII: Uploading images to Wikimedia Commons with OpenRefine youtube video
  • White Rose Event - Several presentations on Wikidata and things happening in the UK to do with Wikidata and digital humanities. See this document for links to recording.
  • ResearchBazzar 2023 is on from 26-30 June. There may be some sessions of interest to Wikipedians, for example, on using OpenRefine and Zotero. Free to attend, online using Zoom.

Outcomes edit

  • Add anything you worked on or learned during the meetup.
  • Organisation time: 1 hr doing notes, 1.5 h adding info after meeting

Next meeting and meetup timetables edit

  • 23 July 2023, same time, same place

Note that WANZ committee members will be busy at their strategy weekend
