Wellington Meetup 14 May 2022

• Date: Saturday 14 May 2022
• Time: 10:00 am to midday
• Location: He Matapihi Molesworth Library at National Library, corner Molesworth and Aitken Streets, Wellington
  Come to the main entrance of the National Library on Molesworth Street.
• Bring (if meeting under Alert Level GREEN): a laptop if you have one. There are publicly available computers if you don't have a laptop.

Venue

Under COVID Alert Level Orange or Red the group meet via video conference call. However, now the definition of COVID alert level Orange has settled a number of the community are interested in going back to in person meet ups and we will be going back on a trial basis for this session. If you do NOT wish to go back to in person meet up please add your name here or contact Einebillion so that a consensus can be met.

Under COVID Alert Level Green the group meets at the He Matapihi Molesworth Library within the National Library. This is a Wellington City Council pop up public library. It was formerly The National Library net.work space. Drinks are permitted in the library.

Meetup Code of Conduct and Anonymity when Meeting Via Video Conference

All attendees are expected to understand and abide by the Draft Universal Code of Conduct for the Wikimedia Movement.

The video conferencing meetup is a replacement for the in-person meetup. While attending and remaining anonymous is supported by the group, lurking is not supported and will be actively discouraged. All attendees are expected to use their User name as an identifier on the video conference call and to introduce themselves and their interest in joining the call on the chat channel of the call as a minimum. Participation using video and / or voice in addition to Chat is encouraged but not required.

Some members of the group have been the target of cyber bullying in the past and these measures are intended to support creating a safe space for collaboration.

If a new attendee joins the group with video and voice disabled, they will be encouraged to participate by the facilitator, using this script:

Welcome new attendee. This group respects your right to remain anonymous. This group has a policy of discouraging lurking as it makes some of us uncomfortable. If you are happy to introduce yourself over voice, please let us know what you've been working on and if you need help with any editing issues.

If you're not comfortable updating the group by voice, then that's okay. You have the option of introducing yourself and adding your user page link in the chat feature. The chat is deleted once the video conference finishes.

If you want to remain completely anonymous and not chat, then this meetup is not for you. We make comprehensive and extensive notes of the meetup that will be included in the meetup page afterwards. That's the best way to catch up with what this meetup has been doing if you don't want to contribute during the video call.

If you're not sure how to use the chat feature you can access it by clicking on the icon that looks like a speech bubble in the bottom left corner.

If, after an appropriate length of time, the new attendee does not participate by video, voice, or chat, the facilitator of the group will remove the attendee from the video call.

If the new attendee persists in logging in, the group will discuss abandoning the meet up.

2. Round table for participants to say what you’re working on

• Chocmilk03 has been working on NZ literature and in particular women author articles.
• Noracrentiss has been working on Wikimedia Aoteaora NZ Inc committee work as secretary and Wikisource. Raised a question about a Wikisource transcription detail and question was referred to David Nind or Beeswaxcandle as group couldn't answer it.
• Gertrude206 has had a bit of a hiatus but normally works in the NZ health area concentrating mainly on women and organisations.
• Pakoire has been contributing to the Wikimedia Aoteaora NZ Inc committee and also updating documentation on ​Wikidata Performing Arts Project - students have created an overview table with a typology of artefacts documenting activities related to the performing arts: [1] Feedback wanted. • Marshelec has been working on Wikimedia Aoteaora NZ Inc committee work as treasurer and also a DYK article in conjunction with another editor Schwede and preparing suggestions for the groups next good article (see below).
• Einebillion has been contributing to Wikimedia Aoteaora NZ Inc committee work as president - in particular the general funding bid for the year. When not doing that also works on mix and match, NZ Wars british soldiers and NZ photographers - mainly in Wikidata.
• Ambrosia10 organising NZ 1Lib1Ref campaign, creating NZ moth stubs, and getting ready for SPNCH.
• AtticEdit has offered to organise an editathon in partnership with her workplace.
• B'art homme is a beginner editor who has come along for help.

3. Progress on Action Points and future events

• 15 May - 5 June One Lib One Ref campaign Australia Wikimedia Foundation and the Wikimedia User Group of Aotearoa New Zealand are working on the One Lib One Ref campaign in May to June. Event page and Dashboard Video how to. Event contact: Ambrosia10
• New Zealand Wikidata Thesis Project aims to get New Zealand dissertations into Wikidata. Project Page, Project Dashboard. There is a google spreasheet of theses authors with Wikipedia pages who need their theses adding to their page if folk want to work on this during #1Lib1Ref. • 2022 November The Postponed Wellington WikiCon Tentatively rescheduled for November 2022. Dependent on success of grant from Wikimedia Foundation. Noting also that there maybe an Australian Wikicon in the same month.
• Visit to Parliamentary Librarians Any update from Pakoire? - Librarians have been in contact with conflict of interest information. Einebillion offered to review.
• 2022 June 5-10 SPNHC 2022 Upcoming conference with wiki outreach representation from Ambrosia10. Update: Need to buy ticket and want to reach out to those running the physical workshops to see if I can do anything to help even though I won't be there physically. - Ambrosia10 (talk)
• In-person Editathon AtticEdit offered venue and addition to events programme of that organisation. Einebillion has been contacted by AtticEdit, the events and programme organiser for an organisation planning their 2022/23 events programme. AtticEdit has been working with the Women in Red project and are wondering whether we would like to do a themed in-person editathon using them as the venue. Ada Lovelace Day is on 13 October 2022. International Women's Day is 8 March 2023. Do we want to do an in-person editathon associated with either of these days? Maybe the weekend before / after? Or do we want to have an in person editathon earlier? Group discussed the offer and decided that they would go ahead with the event sometime in October related to Ada Lovelace Day. Pakoire will work with AtticEdit to confirm date and times.
• Wellington Wikimedians - Dinner on Saturday 28 May The recently elected Wikimedia Aotearoa New New Zealand Committee is meeting in Wellington on the weekend of 28 and 29 May. Wellington-based Wikipedians and supporters are warmly invited to join the Committee on Saturday evening on 28 May when the Committee will be heading to a central city restaurant. Wellington	43,000	Rated Top importance. It’s our place, so we can feel committed to the work. It is already B class. Additional sources should not be too hard to find. Other NZ and Australian city pages are only at B grade at most. It would be great to have Wellington at GA. Probably doesn’t require “specialist knowledge” to review or develop new content	Some of it is written more like a travel advertisement, and needs toning down. It is rather long (8,470 words of “readable prose”), so getting it all improved to GA level is a really large task (however, it is already in sections that could be divided amongst a small group to share the work). Some aspects may be controversial, leading to protracted debates. Lots of people will consider they are experts on Wellington 😊 There has been lots of discussion/alteration related to the city/ metro area (maybe we spin out a new article on the Wellington metro area as a solution ?)
Tangiwai disaster	2.960	Rated High importance. Train was on Wellington-Auckland journey. Major national disaster, receiving international coverage. Many of the dead were probably from Wellington. Lots of good sources available. Large memorial in Karori cemetery
Te Papa	1,634	Rated High Importance. Major visitor attraction in Wellington. Notable as National Museum
Women's suffrage in New Zealand	1,539	Rated High importance. Article is already C class. NZ was (is ?) a world leader. Lots of sources available to cite. Work on this article would broadly align with intentions to address inequality in coverage.	There is a possible difficulty: some of the existing content may perhaps be off-topic, covering wider issues beyond suffrage (the right to vote), such as women being entitled to hold political office, incl being appointed as Prime Minister. I have now found that the topic of women holding political office is covered extensively at Women in New Zealand, so a first step might be to reduce the overlap in content. I note in passing that at present, Women in New Zealand does not mention our female Governor Generals, or list them as notable women. This is a significant gap.
Zealandia (wildlife sanctuary)	688	Rated mid-importance. Said to be a world leading initiative. Major contributor to Wellington tourism. Major contributor to recovery of native birdlife in Wellington. Large numbers of sources found in search of Google Scholar. Not likely to be controversial	Presentation of photos needs tidying up (and some culling perhaps)
Matiu / Somes Island	607	Rated mid-importance. Many Wellingtonians see this island every day, but know little about its fascinating history, or its current status as a scientific reserve. The existing article has many gaps, but there will be many sources that would help us expand it. Probably doesn’t need specialist knowledge. Small enough in scope that we would hopefully not get bogged down. Not likely to be particularly controversial	Relatively small audience at present. Page views are similar to the articles for the Wellington suburbs of Karori and Khandallah
Kohekohe	557	Notable type of tree in Wellington region	Only Start class at present
Old Government Buildings, Wellington	448	Rated High importance. Iconic building	Only Start class at present – a long way to go
Wellington green gecko	121	It would probably be a reasonably short article, even at GA level, so this could mean a lot less work is needed compared with a large article like Wellington. Not likely to be particularly contentious. Mary says “a search of Google Scholar retrieved 36 items”	Existing article is only Start class (long way to go). It is rated Low importance. It’s not drawing much of an audience. Possibly may be difficult to find lots of new sources to cite, making it hard to substantially expand the article. May require some specialist knowledge to draw out key points
