Agenda edit

At the Feb 15 meeting the attendees discussed what could be improved to make the meetups more effective. The decision was more focus on tools and demonstrations of tools.

  • Introduction to meet up by organisers
  • Round table for participants to say what you’re working on and if you need help with anything - bring along your Wikipedia, Wikidata, or Wikimedia problems
  • Review of videoconferencing software - is everyone happy with the user experience?
  • Ambrosia10 - Sandra Fouconnier has produced a WikiCommons and Wikidata editing workflow for public art images. Her comprehensive set of three youtube videos that gives a fabulous "how to". See Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3. I'll also explain how to add a cool tool for those who edit Wikidata - go to your Wikidata common.js page for example https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Ambrosia10/common.js and add the code importScript( 'User:Magnus_Manske/mixnmatch_gadget.js' ); Save. Then clear the cache of your browser and when in Wikidata other mix'n'match authority control id suggestions to be added should appear.
  • Mike - Point people to Task Force Tohutō
  • Get on with problem solving, editing, and chatting
  • MargaretRDonald Wikicommons & wikidata editing for plant images focussing on Category:Photographs by Kevin Thiele] (see Kevin Thiele)

Outcomes edit

  • Mike is testing out a "Lockdown Wikitutorial" meetup, where he shares his screen and tackles one particular task. First one is tomorrow, Sunday 12, 1:00–2:00 pm NZST, and you can sign up here on this Google Sheet.
  • If you want to help with macrons in NZ places articles, we now have task force tohutō; check it out and see what there is to do.
  • Answer regarding the query on .js pages - see this example for a Wikipedia .js page which as the article quality script installed on it.
  • Answer to "where to list a newly created article on a woman for Women in Red project editors to see": this is the list of newly created articles which are not part of one of the Women in Red focus areas. The specific monthly focus areas all have their own lists of newly created articls - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women_in_Red/Meetup/150#April MurielMary (talk) 22:58, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Answer to Wikidata question - participant pointed towards resources on main Wellington meet up page - in the training and resources section.
  • Answer to a copyright and reuse question regarding uploading images with No Known Copyright Restrictions images from South Australian State Library. Group noted that the images are out of copyright but the owner of the images has placed an ownership restriction requiring source acknowledgement. After discussion the decision was made that images could be uploaded to wikimedia commons with the required citation as this was wikimedica commons best practice. Any reuse on other wiki platforms by participants will respect the acknowledgement requirements placed on reuse by the owner but the group acknowledges that image crediting on wikipedia is sometimes not consistent with this practice.
  • Discussion on how to ensure newbies have a good experience if they join the Wellington meetup by video conference. Group acknowledged that this meetup has two purposes. The group exists to give contributors to the wiki platforms a place to discuss issues and challenges and get help as well as support new editors. The group recognized that sometimes the discussion goes beyond what a newbie could reasonably be expected to understand and balancing these two user needs is important. The resolution from the discussion is that attending newbies would be offered the choice of a one-on-one session with an experienced editor. That session could either come after the initial introductory agenda items or be arranged for a separate time depending on whether the newbie wanted to contribute or listen to the rest of the meetup agenda or whether they chose to split off the main meeting for their one-on-one.
