Colleagues and students at Ara Institute of Canterbury meet monthly to share knowledge and ideas about the Wikimedia movement. If you'd like to join us, get in touch with Podzemnik or MurielMary.

May meeting edit

  • We discussed editors' current articles and notability criteria e.g. Tom Webster (architect), Chris Moller, Michael Hughes (Southland cyclist)

June topic: Plan for these sessions in 2022 edit

  • 4 participants including Podzemnik and MurielMary
  • We discussed the Pokzemnik's idea of all collaborating on improving an article to Good Article or Featured Article status and agreed this would be a good way to learn a range of editing skills - we all liked the recent mahi of the Wellington group which developed the article on Kererū to Featured Article status.
  • We discussed our criteria for finding an article to work on that we would all enjoy and settled on a suburb of Christchurch - New Brighton, New Zealand. A good model for us to use as a goal is the FA on Caversham, New Zealand, a suburb of Dunedin.
  • We also discussed frequency of our meetups and agreed monthly on a Tuesday at lunchtime suits us. Podzemnik to put these in our calendars.
  • Before the next meetup - all to look over the Caversham article and compare it to the New Brighton article, and identify areas which need development. Post suggestions on the talk page of the New Brighton article.
  • Paul will check the room, and will have a look at transport in New Brighton
  • Podzemnik can check out some books from the public library and bring them over next time
  • We can all check some good online resources

July topic: Working on New Brighton edit

  • 4 participants including Podzemnik, Aerohydro, KiwiKA and MurielMary
  • The group started working together on New Brighton, New Zealand
  • Plenty of books in a local library but a lot of them are for reference only. Aerohydro managed to get a good book out, though same as we have in Ara library
  • We also discussed CoI issue that Aerohydro discovered in one of the NZ articles
  • For the next meeting, Podzemnik will work on NB's history, Aerohydro will work on Transportation, KiwiKA will work on Māori naming, and MurielMary can choose whatever she wants to work on :)
  • Modelling the headings on Caversham, Dunedin entry we transferred existing content under sub headings under main heading History.
  • Podzemnik showed us how to use the sfn feature to more tidily cite information throughout an entry from the same book so its link when hovered over highlights the book in the Literature section that was created below the references.

August topic: Working on New Brighton edit

  • 3 participants including Podzemnik, Aerohydro and MurielMary
  • The group discussed the work so far on New Brighton, New Zealand, discussed a possible structure for the article and did some editing of it. Quite a bit of discussion about where to place historical information and where to place contemporary information.

April topic: Developing/creating biographies of notable Ara graduates and staff edit

Preparation edit

MM has started a list on the talk page of the Ara article which other editors can add ideas to. It would be useful to also add links to any online resources about them and their achievements, and also something which mentions that they are an Ara graduate/staff member. If you’re not sure whether the person is notable enough for a biography on Wikipedia, take a look at the general notability guidelines (link below) and any specific guidelines which apply (e.g. academic, or athlete, or creative professional etc). Feel free to add people to the list, with sources, and then discuss on the day whether they are notable enough.

  • Round the group to report on what we have been doing lately. Assisted one editor to add a reliable source to a table in "edit source" mode as he had previously added a statement which had been reverted as unsourced.
  • Discussion of response to a request from a senior manager at Ara for a presentation at their team meeting. Agreed we could present on how Wikipedia works, what we are doing in our group, and other possibilities in terms of use of Wikipedia for teaching and learning actvities.
  • Developed the list on the talk page of the Ara article, adding names of notable current and former staff and alumni. Added a section on People to the Ara article and Jack Tame as first name on the list. MurielMary (talk) 02:17, 7 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

May topic: Continuation of developing/creating biographies of notable Ara graduates and staff/Discussion of 1Lib1Ref project edit

The list of Ara people on the article is growing! The editing of this page is producing some useful discussions about notability and referencing on WP. We could also discuss the upcoming 1Lib1Ref project: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref FYI, Wikimedia Australia is offering drop-in sessions to offer support for this project, and New Zealand librarians are welcome to join them: Tuesday 18 May at 12noon; Thursday 20 May at 2pm; Tuesday 25 May at 12pm; Thursday 27 May at 11pm; Tuesday 1 June at 12pm; Thursday 3 June at 2pm. Links to the meetings are on the Wikipedia Aotearoa NZ public facebook page under "events".

  • Agreed to book a video conferencing room for June meeting so we can join Wikimedia Australia's session about 1Lib1Cit

As Mike happened to be in Christchurch, he joined the session and introduced himself and his recent projects. He answered some questions about using templates and infoboxes in articles, and then showed us the WikiShootMe tool. This is a web-based tool that shows Wikidata items, Wikipedia articles, and Commons images with coordinates, all on the same map: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiShootMe We could use this tool at a future meeting to identify places on the Ara campus which are lacking photos e.g. buildings or sculptures.
