Meetup Code of Conduct and Anonymity when Meeting Via Video Conference edit

All attendees are expected to understand and abide by the Draft Universal Code of Conduct for the Wikimedia Movement.

This video conferencing meetup is a replacement for an in-person meetup. While attending and remaining anonymous is supported by the group, lurking is not supported and will be actively discouraged. All attendees are expected to use their User name as an identifier on the video conference call and to introduce themselves and their interest in joining the call on the chat channel of the call as a minimum. Participation using video and / or voice in addition to Chat is encouraged but not required.

Some members of the group have been the target of cyber bullying in the past and these measures are intended to support creating a safe space for collaboration.

If a new attendee joins the group with video and voice disabled, they will be encouraged to participate by the facilitator, using this script:

Welcome new attendee. This group respects your right to remain anonymous. This group has a policy of discouraging lurking as it makes some of us uncomfortable. If you are happy to introduce yourself over voice, please let us know what you've been working on and if you need help with any editing issues.
If you're not comfortable updating the group by voice, then that's okay. You have the option of introducing yourself and adding your user page link into the chat feature. The chat is deleted once the video conference finishes.
If you want to remain completely anonymous and not chat, then this meetup is not for you. We make comprehensive and extensive notes of the meetup that will be included in the meetup page afterwards. That's the best way to catch up with what this meetup has been doing if you don't want to contribute during the video call.
If you're not sure how to use the chat feature you can access it by clicking on the icon that looks like a speech bubble in the bottom left corner.

If, after an appropriate length of time, the new attendee does not participate by video, voice, or chat, the facilitator of the group will remove the attendee from the video call.

If the new attendee persists in logging in, the group will discuss abandoning the meet up.

Chat for sharing pastes, URLs and so on edit

The Jitsi video conferencing platform has a chat feature. This is used to share URLs and other commentary while the discussions are occurring. The facilitators may take a copy to help with writing up outcomes from the meeting on the meeting Wikipedia page. Any copies will be deleted once outcomes and notes are completed.

Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand Inc (WANZ) update
  • Meeting held on 17 March. Constitution approved, Incorporation approved, Committee elected. See Meeting notes
  • Drafting up WF funding application for the year. The majority of the funds are targeted at setting up the incorporation, website and graphic design. Not including funding for a support person at this time. The budget and application text is in draft. If you're interested it's being worked on now and is here
  • Three more signatures are needed to incorporate (Beeswaxcandle and Paora volunteered), after which an AGM can be called to set any membership eligibility requirements and fees. Stuartyeates will provide some words around previous work that was done around working with te ao Māori.
  • The committee are planning to meet physically in Wellington in May or June, to discuss strategy for the user group. A grant proposal for the meeting is in progress here.


Wiki-Con Weekends in 2022 and Events
  • Auckland Meetup on 9 April - will be virtual
  • WikiCon Wellington Postponed until WANZ set up but will be retained on agenda going forward as a reminder.
  • International Women's Day Editathon a great success.
  • Creative New Zealand Wikipedian in Residence Pacifika Project Edit-a-thons at Te Papa Omicron outbreak hindered progress on this. Any further update? Pakoire not present, no update.
  • #1Lib1Ref campaign Australia Wikimedia Foundation and the Wikimedia User Group of Aotearoa New Zealand continue to work on the One Lib One Ref campaign in June. (see this document Ambrosia10 is starting planning for this with Caddie in Australia. The proposal is for zoom meetings who want to learn to add references or liaise about setting up an event for the middle of the year. Planning meeting due mid-April.
  • Other suggestions for themes around events include Library Week, Conservation Week, International Volunteers Day, 24hr editathon for Ada Lovelace Day, WikiSource Women's History Month for Wikisource, Winter Olympics, Matariki Event, Library Week. We should think about the focus of the work - is it to onboard folk or to focus on content.
Anything to update / discuss?
  • DrThneed updated on the thesis project. A summary of the current status is in the next This Month in GLAM. Briefly, a dataset of 66k theses has been collected and a sample of 116 has been uploaded to Wikidata. It is now time to create a Wikiproject for the work to keep the Wiki community abreast of what is happening, and also to think about a grant proposal to raise the profile of the work and make DrThneed report on it when she might otherwise focus just on the data! DrThneed unsure how to go about the grant, Giantflightlessbirds suggested a meeting with Einebillion and others to sort it out. DrThneed is also wondering about how to assess the current state of NZ theses on Wikidata in order to show progress (consensus seemed that there is not much to do other than count the items, as most citations to thesis in Wikipedia currently are straight to the repository rather than via Wikidata). The group had some useful insight into the historical status of theses in NZ and gaps/difficulties in the dataset. Ambrosia10 is keeping a good record of what we are doing in the project so it can be written up as a publication.


3. Wiki News – add any news from the wider Wiki movement the group may be unaware of

  • Giantflightlessbirds with Caddie from Wikimedia Australia have delivered a new GLAMR training program. The training will be described in This Month in GLAM newsletter next month. It consists of 4 1-hour training sessions, with slides, notes, a script for the presenter, answers to typical questions and so on. Everything is CC-BY so can be adapted by the NZ user group or tweaked for particular circumstances. Giantflightlessbirds is working on a Commons session too, and thinks that including one for WikiSource would also be useful. There was a plan to create badges for user pages, which when all four sessions have been done, will fit together to create a design.

4. Round table for participants to say what you’re working on and if you need help to do anything or want anything demonstrated – You can add requests for help here prior to the meeting if you want

  • DrThneed/Tamsin: mostly dissertations project work. Also added award statements for all the new FRSNZs in Wikidata, and a couple of other prizes that came out this month. Had almost completed the list of Wikipedia pages for women FRSNZs with only one to go, who has poor sources, but now have a longer list to work on.
  • Stuartyeates Made a Wp page for Cat Pausé which disappointingly received a bit of vandalism and had to be protected. Also wrote a bio for her supervisor, and has been working on Moana Jackson. A reminder to us all that we should ask for photos of recently deceased people for their pages. Has also been working on NZ naming conventions, and a list of all NZ royal commissions and commissions of inquiry (there are about 100), which can provide a worklist for later and in the meantime is the sort of content that is useful for NZ history, given recent history curriculum changes.
  • Marshelec: has worked on a series of articles related to a large private South Island tourism company, RealNZ/RealJourneysNZ. The articles were self-promotional but now much improved following a recent rebranding of the company. Has also been working on Wingspan National Bird of Prey Centre. Has wondered about seeking funding for a campaign of work on articles of NZ national parks, which are in a pretty bad state. General agreement from the group that the work needs doing, although Giantflightlessbirds pointed out that as DOC has 60 comms staff and a lot of photos they could provide, we should be approaching them to support this. Schwede66 pointed out DOC have a lot of birdsong files that are openly licensed if anyone is interested. Group members also pointed out this would be of relevance to Wikivoyage, and that Acts of Parliament (& the debates around them) that established the parks will be out of copyright so can be used for quotes about the importance of the area.
  • Oronsay: Doing what she describes as "gardening" type editing, and some biographies of women, including Alison Stewart. Will be involved in #1lib1ref and the Franklin women editathon this week.
  • MargaretRDonald: Congratulations to Margaret on her Wikidata fellowship! Working on linking people in reference lists, and the Australian Faunal Directory in Wikidata. There is a lot of clean up needed at the genera level but species level matches pretty well.
  • JH: attended a Smithsonian editathon "If Then She Can", based around 200 3D sculptures of women scientists, and another Spelman College editathon around African American women. Has been working on a biographical dictionary on Wikisource, three more volumes to do!
  • Giantflightlessbirds: Library work scanning out of copyright books continues, has had a volunteer scanning images from an out of copyright household encyclopedia, and deploying the images, including a whole set of images of horse teeth. Also some work on Ethel Richardson, an illustrator who worked for the Dominion Museum and illustrated some Elsdon Best books. Made a presentation to the select committee on the UK/NZ free trade agreement relating to the proposed copyright term extension (at approx 59 minutes here). Had a followup meeting with Mike Wolfe from Tohatoha and Melanie Johnson a retired librarian, regarding potential celebrations for public domain day. Currently this is a big deal in the US, but not marked in NZ at all. Also planning to revisit Wikipedian-at-Large, with a focus on the bits of the West Coast so far neglected (far south, up to Karamea, around Lake Brunner).
  • David Nind: nothing in the last little while, hope to get back into Wikisource, Wikidata and Commons work this month.
  • Schwede66: Has worked a bit on the Heaphy Track article, and on Auckland high rise buildings in Commons, which were pretty disorganised. Looked at family trees in Category pages (example Weston family in New Zealand). Just started an article on the Golden Bay Cement Company. Wikipedia is losing admins as people become inactive, there are several people in the group who have the potential to be good admins, if you are interested please talk to Schwede66. The process is quite intensive but there are things you can do to prepare. The group suggested there are admin tasks that people can volunteer for, smaller wikis like WikiSource where people can undertake "lower-impact" admin roles to get some experience. It was also agreed that a community capacity survey would be a great thing for the user group to undertake.
  • Noracrentiss: mostly been dealing with the bureaucracy of setting up the user group. Also working on a woman academic who started the field of women's studies in NZ, prompted by a relative of the woman who wanted to write the page. Source material is lacking. (Stuartyeates has offered to help if Noracrentiss would like to contact him). Also working occasionally on the Alexander Turnbull Library Mix'n'Match.
  • Ambrosia10: Did a 3 day workshop with paleontologists aimed at getting them into Wikidata to connect with their collections on Bionomia. Participants were very enthusiastic. Presenting at Digikult this week, didn't think it would be controversial but a recent blogpost by the new director of the Finnish national gallery proposing to rollback open access has caused a stir. Continuing to work on George Vernon Hudson moth illustrations. WeDigBio is coming up, focusing on transcribing specimen labels and connecting to Wikidata. Is in the process of co-writting a women genera paper, which may be being presented at a conference shortly, possibly the American Botanical Society conference. And is contribution to writing a paper on author disambiguation, which is being submitted for publication shortly.
  • Paora: Has been uploading publications from Massey University faculty as they are published with an open license. Also making stubs for old counties, not yet complete. Made a list for Mayors of Motueka, the last one is still alive at 103 years old. Also worked on some recent deaths, Jack Monaghan and Murray Day. And sneakily adding macrons.

5. Review of questions raised during round table

  • Schwede66: Has trouble adding points of interest to a map template (Mapframe, which redirects to Template:Maplink; case in point was the article Heaphy Track; desired outcome was to add location markers to the map for the huts along the way, similarly how it's done on Kathy Lynch). Suggested that he talk to Jonathanischoice. Also noted that Canley is doing a presentation on working with maps shortly, through Australian usergroup. There was interest in the idea of a one-day map workshop if someone could be found to run it. There are Commons resources on working with maps here.
  • David Nind: copyright question, what license do you apply to items to which copyright does not apply (rather than things that have come out of copyright), e.g. items tabled in Parliament, produced by government agencies during their normal course of business. Beeswaxcandle says there is a Wikisource template for that.
