Wellington WikiCon was planned as New Zealand's third Wikimedia conference in 2021. Due to the current and forecast Co-VID Alert Levels, the conference has been postponed to 2022.

Theme and aims edit

Theme: "Wellington: people, places, politics, plants, performing arts"

The aims of the Wellington WikiCon are to:

  • raise the awareness of Wikimedia platforms with new audiences and create interest and excitement in participating in the development of content
  • create a space for skill sharing and development in all areas of Wikimedia
  • encourage the development of regular meetups or "Communities of Interest" for interested editors especially those associated with Victoria University of Wellington Te Herenga Waka.
  • progress the development of the Wikimedia User Group of Aotearoa New Zealand towards WMF Chapter status

  • 7pm Attendees meet for an informal dinner (location to be confirmed)

Saturday edit

  • 9.00am Arrival and set up in rooms (15 mins)
  • 9.15am Welcome by Wikimedia User Group of Aotearoa New Zealand representatives including Health & Safety briefing (15 min) (15 mins)
  • 9.30am Overview of the weekend (5 mins)
  • 9.35am Interviews with 4 or 5 experienced editors on how they got involved and why they stay involved (25 mins)
  • 10.00am Morning tea - catering provided (30 min)
  • 10.30am Presentation: The Wikimedia Ecosystem (15 mins)
  • 10.45am Concurrent Break out editing / info sharing session - Newbies will have their own space with Gertrude206 and another experienced editor to provide training, next steps for newbies, help answer questions. (1hr 15 min)
  • 10.45am Concurrent Break out editing / info sharing session - Experienced editors mingle and talk workflows and tool sharing tips and tricks. (1hr 15 min)
  • 10.45am Concurrent Break out Open Data (1hr 15 min)
  • 12.30pm Lunch - catering provided (60 min)
  • 1.30pm Concurrent: Wikisource, what it is, why it's important and how to contribute (45mins)
  • 1.30pm Concurrent: Wikimedia and Politics (45mins)
  • 2.15pm Concurrent Break out Newbie editing continues (45mins)
  • 2.15pm Concurrent Break out Experienced editing continues(45mins)
  • 2.15pm Concurrent Break out: Creating a Community of Interest at Victoria University of Wellington (45mins)
  • 3.00pm Afternoon tea - catering provided (30 min)
  • 3.30pm Unconference discussion topics (1hr)
  • 4.30pm Discussion on car pooling / sharing transport to the dinner, immediate feedback, conclusionsPrizes (60 mins)
  • 5.00pm Finish for the day.
  • 7.30pm: Conference dinner Location TBC- cost of dinner not included in event registration

  • 9.30am Depart on optional field trips

Option A: Otari Wilton Bush. Transport to be provided from VUW or meet at the Otari Visitor Centre at 10am for an intro to Otari Wilton Bush (10 mins) followed by a practical session on "Taking good photos with your digital camera at 10.15am
Option B Wellington Museum TBC (transport to be provided or meet at the Museum at 10am)
Option C Remain at Victoria University for more editing/Unconference content

  • 12.15pm Depart Otari Wilton Bush / Wellington Museum for return to VUW
  • 12.30pm Lunch at Victoria University (60 mins)
  • 1.30pm Beginners guide to Copyright and WikiCommons
  • 2.00pm Editing/improving articles from field trips; uploading photographs
  • 3.15pm Reminder re feedback, closing discussion, prizes
  • 4pm FINISH

Attendees travelling by private vehicle are advised to check the availability and cost of parking if staying at a central city hotel/motel. If you feel unwell during or within 14 days after this event with flu like symptoms please follow the Unite Against COVID19 instructions and also inform the event organisers by emailing us and/or by using the talk page of this event.

The organisers will be maintaining a mailing list of attendees for the purposes of COVID19 tracing. Victoria University, Otari Wilton Bush and Wellington Museum will have COVID19 app tracer QR codes and sign-in sheets available.

To be announced. We will seek grant funding to cover some of the catering and other costs and keep the conference affordable. Day registration will be available.
