Wellington Meetup 18 March 2023 edit

  • Location: He Matapihi Molesworth Library at National Library, corner Molesworth and Aitken Streets, Wellington
    Come to the main entrance of the National Library on Molesworth Street.
  • Bring a laptop if you have one. There are publicly available computers if you don't have a laptop.

Venue edit

The group meet at the He Matapihi Molesworth Library within the National Library. This is a Wellington City Council pop up public library. Mask wearing is encouraged. Drinks are permitted in the library.

Agenda and Notes from Meeting edit

  • Letting the group known Einebillion and Ambrosia10 will both be away.

3. Round table for participants to say what you’re working on

  • Ambrosia10 - busy helping advise BHL including their white paper on their Wiki engagement plans, Women in Genera project work, working on SPNHC 2023 papers, working on a presentation in the WeDigBio 2023 symposium that is happening in April (will include Wiki related content), Hidden Figures module editing and then mix'n'match including BHL creator id set and a little bit of NZ moth editing on Wikipedia.
  • Marshelec has been undertaking a GA review on an article about a railway station in Melbourne: Huntingdale railway station. The nominator seems to be relatively inexperienced but has nominated 4 articles for GA. Marshelec also attended a fascinating talk about Dragonflies at Zealandia on 17 March, and has added comments to Talk:Uropetala carovei about the Bush giant dragonfly. Other work has included adding Strap-toothed whale to the Wikipedia:WikiProject New Zealand/Critter of the Week also some additions to Karamea, and assisting a relatively new editor with improvements to Te Rapa cogeneration.
  • Wainuiomartian (talk) has been expanding stub articles and created a couple of new articles. She created an article for Ruben Pattison - who is exhibiting at the city gallery. Expanded stubs including the NZ south seas expedition 1889 and the “Crate Day” article.
  • Noracrentiss - still working on Kelly Talton article. Doing Wiki administration - "engine room" activities. Discussed about BeesWaxCandle's Wikisource WikiProject on the Transactions and Proceedings of the NZ institute. She's discovered a couple of them and adding her information to the Wikisource author discussion pages.
  • Jon - Will help with the Kelly Talton article. He's been trying to improve NZ wine article. He's split it and created a new article for the Auckland Wine region and a couple of others. These need to be tidied and expanded as they have missing history, viticulture etc. He's put the "to do" information in the talk pages of the article. Original article was just too long so he's making it more suitable for the reader. Also fiddling with trombone articles, and getting images. Went through the process - wizard tool to "please email permission".
  • Pippipip was inspired by Marty’s presentation on upgrading suburb articles and including history for the NZ history curriculum. So she's been working on the Brooklyn suburb. Adding lots of citations, changing the order of information and adding new sections. Adding gallery of images etc.
  • Pakoire - Getting conference delivered! Also Wikimania Singapore is coming up. Have idea from when attending ESEAP in Sydney - of doing a Pacifica take over and a Pacifica programme stream. 28th of March is the deadline for this submission. A lot of work but it is possible. She's also been discussing a Theatre collaboration with Singaporean artists. Has been discussing this during the Network NZ arts market with a festival director. She also did a shout out about Wikipedia at the same event. A couple of people responded to that. An Indian woman who lives in Dunedin and makes feminist shows about Indian cultural dance expressed interest. So she's been undertaking engagement and networking. She's also been organising the Women in Architecture editathon in May. Also been doing the accounting for the conference etc and once finished she’ll write wikipedia articles again. Agrees that as an entry point for new editors that photographs really good idea. Thinking about creating a competition and prizes for architectural structures etc created by Women for the editathon.
  • Gertrude206 - working on a Virginia King sculpture article. Marty and Alex asked to take photos of sculptures in Auckland and Melbourne. Also working on the Green Lane hospital in Auckland - recently got photos. Whites aviation photos are being used but their metadata in Tiaki in the Alexander Turnbull Library needs improving and so is in the process of combining a request to the Turnbull to change the metadata because it helps with search.
  • Quilt Phase - Attended conference. Learned a lot about commons knowledge, how to link it, create category. Australian Memorial at National War memorial park which didn’t have Wikidata item nor category. At dedication ceremony there were images he could reuse. He added references & got all the photos and added them to the category. Another photo of the Well_ngton sculpture which has been reskinned. Now got a new photo. He also took pictures at the Home of Compassion at the WikiCon where he learnt about categories. He's also interested in the Water Whirler - Wellington sculpture trust sculpture. No wikidata item for WREDA - agency which commissioned the Well_ngton sign. Instagram magnet - tourism sign. Creator and designer needed adding.

4. Progress on Action Points and future events

Group had a wide ranging discussion on the event. Quilt Phrase said event was regarded as extremely well run providing plenty of opportunity to break out in smaller groups and then come back together to do more general presentations. It had really good catering and the location was fabulous. The attendees learned a lot. Some added gadgets but don't now know why they’ve done it. Ambrosia10 added slides of tools presentation to agenda to help. Noracrentiss said the event had a really great feeling. It was different from Auckland conference as it was GLAM focus & museum. She felt Auckland was a more traditional conference and venue wasn’t as pleasant. Lots of good elements worth thinking about making sure happens at the next conference. Marshelec suggested we could have done better with marketing in order to obtain another 10 people. Goal was originally 60 which wasn't achieved. Discussion amongst group about strategies of how the organisers might have been able to get more folk to attend, how to reach potential audiences. Pay for advertising was mentioned. Paid for marketing approach is to something needs to be measured. The group discussed further outreach activities that might improve attendance not just at conferences but at other meetups including a discussion concerning teaching packet for secondary teachers about Wikipedia and also offering prizes for participation. There was also a discussion about the GTP4 that’s just been released and its effect on Wikipedia. Noracrentiss really liked the different streams for different levels. Said she got a feeling of knowing what her purpose was and a sense of belonging about the conference. Quilt Phase really liked the 3 different rooms divided up into streams and key notes and in particular the balance of the conference. He did mention that the Wikidata breakout room presentation and round table was a bit unbalanced for him. He wanted more of Tamsin's presentation and less of the round table discussion. Wainuiomartian gave feedback that she assumed the conference would be too technical and so didn’t attend (but on seeing the agenda afterwards thinks she should have attended). The group expressed their disappointment on missing out on her contributions and she said she'd consider it next time. [Ambrosia10 suggests organisers reach out to Wainuiomartian to see if she has any suggestions about how we could have made her feel more welcome.] The group had a discussion about how we could make "newer" editors more comfortable attending. One suggestion was an editathon prior to conference - perhaps a way to get folk more comfy into coming to conference. Marshelec wants these suggestions to be published in an event guide, along with ideas about recruitment, diverse audience inclusiveness to be made it clear in marketing and promotion etc. Where was it advertised. Parliamentary group didn’t come. Marshelec suggests we might do a better job explaining the story for example about how Wikipedia can support teaching history of schools. Currently limited as we do not have someone with a market focus on the committee. No comms plan - reality of limited capacity. Jon is considering reaching out to the History teachers network and creating and info pack. Others suggested reaching out to David Nind as he has info.

Progress update

  • There has been some work done but we need more focus. Marshelec is going to find out more about transfer of ownership. Lede needs improvement. Wainuiomartian thinking about volunteers that have helped improve the island and link them in. She's happy to nominate the article for good article status when we feel like nominating it. Discussion about the first 2 or 3 sentences end up in a Google summary can be regarded as very important. Marshall will put a bit more time in improving the article in the near future.

  • Jon - demonstrated the process of how to get an email permission of use sent to the copyright owner of a commons image that needs permission to be copied.
