Agenda edit

At the Feb 15 meeting the attendees discussed what could be improved to make the meetups more effective. The decision was more focus on tools and demonstrations of tools.

  • Introduction to meet up by organisers
  • Round table for participants to say what you’re working on and if you need help with anything - bring along your Wikipedia, Wikidata, or Wikimedia problems
  • Review of questions raised during round table
  • Demonstration of another tool - to be confirmed - talk about Wikipedia Weekly and iNaturalist https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22eXkUV6qug
  • What to do with the Wellington Meetup after we come out of lockdown
  • Get on with problem solving, editing, and chatting

Outcomes edit

  • Link to the Wikipedia Weekly - iNaturalist and citizen science video that Giantflightlessbirds and Ambrosia10 appeared in.
  • Request for photos from Quilt Phase of Hannah playhouse on their next walk
  • Question about project notes on user page - Discussion on anonymity and that it's different for everyone. User pages are often used to list future work and projects. They are also used to represent you to the editing community.
  • Question on conflict of interest - There is a conflict of interest template you can put on the talk page of the specific article. You can also add a conflict of interest section to your user page and list the pages you have a conflict of interest in. Giantflightlessbirds said there is an interesting discussion on conflict of interest on weekly wiki discussion Wikipedia Weekly #132 - Conflict of Interest and Best Editing Practices for GLAM entities. Ambrosia10 said check out the talk page of the Auckland Museum Wikipedia article as a staff member has been navigating getting that page edited and ensuring no conflict interest. Giantflightlessbirds recommended that organisations bring in Wikipedia editors for a time, giving them coffee and treats, providing resources and asking them to edit and update the page for their institution.
  • Wikidata - Pakoire needs a one-on-one to walk her through it. Group suggested a couple of people who could help.
  • Rights question - photography of the theatre shows - is there a copyright issue in uploading these images and using them on Wikipedia given that it's possible that there is copyright in the costumes and the staging? Group felt that the images should be uploaded as a lot of these types of images are already in use around the world and this hasn't been an issue before.
  • Ballofstring asked about structured data in wiki commons and why aren't categories enough. Categories are too blunt also categories in wiki commons are not the same categories in wikipedia. It's the way the wiki community is making wiki commons items searchable using multiple languages. The machine learning opportunities are greater with linked structured data.
  • Te Ara - would they be open to changing the default of their licenses for the content they create? They might be. Perhaps the Wikipedia group of New Zealand might contact the CEO?
  • Discussion on how this group will continue after the New Zealand Covid-19 Alert levels descend and a physical meetup becomes possible again. The online group has grown to include members from Australia, and areas outside of Wellington. A consensus was reached that, once the Wellington Meetup can meet up physically once again, the meetups of that group will be reduced to monthly. A new Aotearoa New Zealand Meetup will be established to continue with the digital meetings on a monthly basis alternating with the Wellington Meetup timetable. The Aotearoa New Zealand Meetup administration and set up of main meet up page and meetup dates will occur when New Zealand moves to Covid-19 Alert Level 1. There was acknowledgement of the work Einebillion contributes to administrating and facilitating the meetings. The group want the same quality for the proposed Aotearoa New Zealand meet up group. Agreement that the administration of both groups will be continued to be the responsibility of Einebillion with assistance from Ambrosia10 and other editors for the time being. Einebillion and Ambrosia10 noted that the facilitation was often shared so that the group could continue to be supported. They encouraged others to jump in if they wanted to help with the facilitation or administration. Further discussion noted that all members are encouraged to add items for discussion into the agenda of the meetup pages and that if the group wanted to do a deep dive on a particular topic just to go for it.
  • Noted that user User:Paewiki has been doing some interesting work around locations and wikidata. Group want to award that user a barn star and ask them whether they are interested in joining us.
