Meetup code of conduct and anonymity when meeting via video conference edit

All attendees are expected to understand and abide by the Draft Universal Code of Conduct for the Wikimedia Movement.

This video conferencing meetup is a replacement for an in-person meetup. While attending and remaining anonymous is supported by the group, lurking is not supported and will be actively discouraged. All attendees are expected to use their User name as an identifier on the video conference call and to introduce themselves and their interest in joining the call on the chat channel of the call as a minimum. Participation using video and / or voice in addition to Chat is encouraged but not required.

Some members of the group have been the target of cyber bullying in the past and these measures are intended to support creating a safe space for collaboration.

If a new attendee joins the group with video and voice disabled, they will be encouraged to participate by the facilitator, using this script:

Welcome new attendee. This group respects your right to remain anonymous. This group has a policy of discouraging lurking as it makes some of us uncomfortable. If you are happy to introduce yourself over voice, please let us know what you've been working on and if you need help with any editing issues.
If you're not comfortable updating the group by voice, then that's okay. You have the option of introducing yourself and adding your user page link into the chat feature. The chat is deleted once the video conference finishes.
If you want to remain completely anonymous and not chat, then this meetup is not for you. We make comprehensive and extensive notes of the meetup that will be included in the meetup page afterwards. That's the best way to catch up with what this meetup has been doing if you don't want to contribute during the video call.
If you're not sure how to use the chat feature you can access it by clicking on the icon that looks like a speech bubble in the bottom left corner.

If, after an appropriate length of time, the new attendee does not participate by video, voice, or chat, the facilitator of the group will remove the attendee from the video call.

If the new attendee persists in logging in, the group will discuss abandoning the meet up.

Chat for sharing pastes, URLs and so on edit

The Jitsi video conferencing platform has a chat feature. This is used to share URLs and other commentary while the discussions are occurring. The facilitators may take a copy to help with writing up outcomes from the meeting on the meeting Wikipedia page. Any copies will be deleted once outcomes and notes are completed.

Future meetups edit

Agenda and notes edit

1. Introduction to meet up by organisers

2. Wikimedia User Group of Aoteaora New Zealand Update and Discussion (15 minutes)

Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand Inc (WANZ)
  • Note: Transparency of meeting agendas and minutes is limited at the moment due to a lack of a website for WANZ. This is being worked on to make them publicly available. If you want copies please contact secretary-at-wikimedia.nz.
Update from President, WANZ
  • A big thank you to the organisers of the Wellington WikiCon - it was a strong event with great participation and excellent to see members of the Pasifika community of emerging editors and organisers attending.
  • Members of the subcommittee have spent a lot of time in the past few weeks focussed on submitting the general funding grant application for 2023-26. This is the first multi year grant we've submitted. Other than general operating costs we are applying for funding to support:
- Event funding for an annual Wikicon and editathons and a 6 month roaming Wikipedian
- Funding for an in-person strategy weekend for the committee. This was so successful last year we want to repeat it as we've achieved and learned a lot from our progress to date and we want to focus ourselves on next steps.
- Funding for a full time contrator to provide administrative and executive services. This will allow some of the organising burden to be lifted from the committee and increase our capacity to make more impact with the WANZ incorporated society. We've also applyed for funding for a 0.5FTE comms contractor in year 2 and 3
- Funding for a Pasifika wikimedian in residence in a Pacific island. This is a pilot project hoping to connect us with the wider Pacific and trially how we might support any existing editing base and grow the editing base. Looking to promote this online meetup as an avenue for support.
- Funding for a group of emerging Pasifika New Zealanders to attend Wikimania in August.
Next steps are a meeting with our WMF Program Officer, Jacqueline to get feedback on our application.
  • AGM for WANZ is happening on 17 April 2023 from 7.30pm on google meet. The meeting will be setting the membership subscrptions - currently proposed as $NZ5 annually. As the committee members were elected for two year terms in May 2022 and as no resignations have been received since then, the current committee will continue.
  • A draft President's report for the AGM has been prepared. Once approved by the committee and after the AGM I'll also provide it at our next online meetup.
Update from Treasurer, WANZ
  • A draft financial statement for 2022 has been prepared for the AGM of Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand to be held on Monday 17 April 2023.
  • Work is also proceeding on the performance report we are required to submit to Charities Services by end June. This will be a "Tier 4 report", because the Society is currently eligible for the simple cash-based reporting allowed by this standard [1].
  • Expenditure against the WMF General Support Grant 2022-23 is significantly below budget, largely because limited volunteer capacity has prevented us from developing several of the initiatives included in the grant proposal, and the associated expenditure.

3. Wiki-Con Weekends, Editathons, Events and Outreach in 2022

Don't forget to add your program to the Campaign Dashboard. The Dashboard is a key tracking tool for reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation and will help us ensure that we get funding in future years. If you are unsure how to add programs to the Campaign dashboard contact: Ambrosia10 (talk) on her talk page
  • New Zealand Wikidata Thesis Project aims to get New Zealand dissertations into Wikidata. Project Page, Project Dashboard. There is a google spreadsheet of theses authors with Wikipedia pages who need their theses adding to their page if folk want to work on this during #1Lib1Ref.
New information: Video on how to add thesis to people's pages has been completed.
Project Contacts: DrThneed, Giantflightlessbirds and Ambrosia10
  • Other suggestions for themes around events include Library Week, Conservation Week, International Volunteers Day, 24hr editathon for Ada Lovelace Day, WikiSource Women's History Month for Wikisource, Winter Olympics, Matariki Event, Library Week. We should think about the focus of the work - is it to onboard folk or to focus on content. Any further update?
Anything to update / discuss?

4. Round table for participants to say what you’re working on and if you need help to do anything or want anything demonstrated – You can add requests for help here prior to the meeting if you want

  • Jon (talk) Use of a doctorate thesis (or theses in general) as references, WP:SCHOLARSHIP, in context: my first GA review, Talk:Contrabass trombone/GA1#Bibliography. As you can imagine, "trombone" is a small field, and "contrabass trombone" almost non-existent. One complaint that it's not cited - it was only published in 2020. It contains valuable interviews with several leading lights in the (small) contrabass trombone universe, which confirm what I know to be (pretty much self-evidently) true but not well covered in the usual sources (news, journals etc.)

Bionomia Hidden Figures Workflow
  • Ambrosia10 - continuing to work on the Women Genera project with the group of botanists I'm collaborating with, same as well for the Hidden Figures CURE educational resource (one of my collaborators recently presented at the conference for south eastern biologists in the US). Attended the workshop held at the South Eastern Biologists conference to support attendees in working on the Wikidata/Bionomia website workflow for adding collectors to Wikidata and linking them to their content. See this recording for the workflow. I really liked the way the workshop created at GitHub repository for all their documentation. This is worth having a look! As a result of supporting this workshop I had two follow up emails to help two attendees get more into Wikidata. I've also been working on the Harvard Index of Botanists dataset as well as the BHL creator id dataset. I'm late today as I'm presenting at a SciStarter celebration for Citizen Science Month. I'm going to emphasis the citsci work that can be done writing Wikipedia articles on species. My slides can be found here and the youtube recording can be found here. On the 15th of April I'll be presenting again in a WeDigBio symposium discussing my citizen science work - mainly discussing transcribing specimen label but Wikidata will make an appearance in the presentation. See here for the slides for that presentation. To register for the symposium "WeDigBio's Why Dig Bio—Major Motivations Across Scale for Digitizing Biodiversity" to be held on Friday, April 14, 2023, from 3–4 ET, visit EventBrite.
  • Beeswaxcandle hasn't done a lot lately due to conference. The Transaction project has got some accelerations. Papers Past has provided corrected html for volume 15. Investigating whether this HTML will be useful for Wikisource. May need support from Royal Society for reuse.
  • DrThneed Year has exploded with work so needing to schedule. Put in a proposal to go to Wikimania. There's also Wikidata conference at Taiwan later in the year, while not attending physically, will be on the organising committee. Also put in a proposal to go to LIANZA in Christchurch and talk about Thesis project. Women in Architecture editathon in Auckland on 20 May and likely to support a Dunedin in person event. Also have worked on Scholia for a Zoology department, as a new way of visualising some of the thesis data. Working on two publications and looking over a draft Wikidata toolkit for another editor.
  • Oronsay Working on NZ Thesis Project and noted that DrThneed has matched over 1500 to her 575. Preparation for April Women in Red campaign, including its participation in the Every Book Its Reader. Campaign from Meta to write about books in Wikidata, Wikipedia, etc. plus all the other bits and pieces.
  • David Nind Haven't looked at Wikipedia or Wikidata but things have settled so can get stuck in.
  • Slowking4 Lots of editathons and uploading images from New York Historical society. Thanks to Mike for his presentation on what’s good for GLAMs, "Nine WikiSteps" video.

5. Review of questions raised during round table

6. Further discussion

  • Oronsay demonstrated a global script that counts statements on Wikidata item for Wikipedia category and may be found on her global.js page. If you look at the contents of a Category you can see which items could use some work on their Wikidata item.
  • Historian Russell Stone will be turning 100 years old on 7 April.
  • Oronsay raised the issue that the Wikidata SPARQL query service and the fact that this may need being replaced. See March 2023 scaling update. Recommended the New Zealand community be involved in the discussions.
  • Giantflightlessbirds conducted a brainstorm of all the GLAM people working periodically in Wiki projects with the intention to encourage a get together at National Digital Forum conference.

Outcomes edit

  • Add anything you worked on or learned during the meetup.
  • Organisation time: 1 hr doing notes, 1.5 h adding info after meeting

Next meeting and meetup timetables edit

  • 30 April 2023, same time, same place
