International Women's Day Wikipedia Editathon Aotearoa New Zealand

To acknowledge International Women's Day on Tuesday, 8 March the New Zealand Wikipedia Usergroup are holding a weekend edit-a-thon on 5 and 6 March 2022. It is online on Zoom intended for people to participate for any length of time that suits them and to enable people to come and go. There will be two facilitated catch up times a day – morning and afternoon, to enable any users to get support they might need and to provide a more social aspect to the virtual event.

Purpose and suggested content edit

The purpose of the event is to increase content about women in Aotearoa in Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikiquotes or Wikisource. Editors are free to contribute in anyway big or small on any Wikimedia Foundation platform. We look forward to finding out what is generated – you can share in the Outcomes sections

Wikimedia Commons

Images of women are important to illustrate articles. The New Zealand Governor Generals Office has many images in their website under an open license that could be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. For people new to this we can offer tutorial – indicate your interest when you add yourself as a participant.

Meetup Code of Conduct and Anonymity when Meeting Via Video Conference edit

All attendees are expected to understand and abide by the Draft Universal Code of Conduct for the Wikimedia Movement.

The video conferencing meetup is a replacement for the in-person meetup. While attending and remaining anonymous is supported by the group, lurking is not supported and will be actively discouraged. All attendees are expected to use their User name as an identifier on the video conference call and to introduce themselves and their interest in joining the call on the chat channel of the call as a minimum. Participation using video and / or voice in addition to Chat is encouraged but not required.

Some members of the group have been the target of cyber bullying in the past and these measures are intended to support creating a safe space for collaboration.

  • If a new attendee joins the group with video and voice disabled, they will be encouraged to participate by the facilitator, using this script:
    • Welcome new attendee. This group respects your right to remain anonymous. This group has a policy of discouraging lurking as it makes some of us uncomfortable. If you are happy to introduce yourself over voice, please let us know what you've been working on and if you need help with any editing issues.
    • If you're not comfortable updating the group by voice, then that's okay. You have the option of introducing yourself and adding your user page link in the chat feature. The chat is deleted once the video conference finishes.
    • If you want to remain completely anonymous and not chat, then this meetup is not for you. We make comprehensive and extensive notes of the meetup that will be included in the meetup page afterwards. That's the best way to catch up with what this meetup has been doing if you don't want to contribute during the video call.
    • If you're not sure how to use the chat feature you can access it by clicking on the icon that looks like a speech bubble in the bottom left corner.

If, after an appropriate length of time, the new attendee does not participate by video, voice, or chat, the facilitator of the group will remove the attendee from the video call.

If the new attendee persists in logging in, the group will discuss abandoning the meet up.

Aotearoa New Zealand online meetup edit

Meeting Invitation: to establish Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand Inc ("WANZ Inc") as an Incorporated Society and register as a charitable entity edit

This information has been added to the page to encourage participants to attend the meeting to establish WANZ Inc. This meeting falls between the International Women's Day take over and the next Aotearoa New Zealand Online meetup.

The WANZ Establishment Working Group (WEWG) consists of the following people:

Why an incorporated society? edit

Our purpose is to establish an organisation in New Zealand that can promote and support development of content on Wikimedia Foundation platforms and encourage increased participation by New Zealand residents and those associated with our country. In particular, we require a more formal organisation if we are to apply for and receive significant grants.

The proposed structure (an incorporated society with charitable status) enables grass-roots involvement of the membership in all the important decision-making of the society. The proposed society will:

  • keep members informed of its activities through a range of media
  • provide learning pathways for developing Wikimedia-related skills
  • coordinate projects
  • apply for or support applications for funding

What will be the entitlements and obligations of being a Member of WANZ Inc? edit

Entitlements: Members of WANZ Inc can

  • stand for election to the Committee
  • vote at the AGM

Obligations:

  • Members must pay an annual membership fee (determined at the AGM) in order to retain their entitlements as a member. Members can resign their membership at any time.

What’s been done so far edit

WEWG prepared an initial draft Constitution for WANZ which was made available for comment. Notices were placed on and off Wikipedia calling for input. The WEWG received and considered several comments and suggestions and made a small number of changes to the document. The revised draft is now available for the next step (you can read it here).

Meanwhile, User:Marshelec (Marshall Clark) has begun drafting a set of Standard Operating Procedures for consideration and adoption by the new organisation. These SOPs will cover the everyday running of WANZ including things like Role Descriptions for Committee Members.

Next steps edit

The WEWG will convene an online meeting of "members" (people interested in setting up the Society) to do the following:

  • approve the rules/constitution
  • resolve to apply for incorporation
  • decide who will be the president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer (two-year terms)
  • choose who will fill the other committee positions (two-year terms)
  • decide on a physical address for the registered office plus an email address for communications
  • decide on the month in which the Society's AGM is to be held (The Society's financial year is the calendar year so April seems a suitable month for the AGM.)

After that meeting, the newly established Committee will:

  1. gather 15 signatures for the application for incorporation
  2. submit the application to the Registrar of Incorporated Societies
  3. apply for registration as a charity with Charities Services
  4. establish a bank account

The Constitution requires formation of a Committee so please consider whether you wish to put yourself forward for one of the Committee roles set out in the Constitution. (While the Constitution states that the term is for 2 years, a Committee member can resign at any time.)
