Wellington Meetup 24 October 2020

  Note this video conferencing software link will ask permission to use your computer camera and microphone. You will need to agree to get full functionality. Google Chrome or Chromium is recommended for the best experience (not all aspects work correctly with other browsers).
• Bring (if meeting under Alert Level 1): a laptop if you have one. There are publicly available computers if you don't have a laptop.

Venue

Under Alert Level 1 the group meet at the He Matapihi Molesworth Library within the National Library. This is a Wellington City Council pop up public library. It was formerly The National Library net.work space. Drinks are permitted in the library.

Under Alert Level 2 or higher the group meet via video conference call.

Meetup Code of Conduct and Anonymity when Meeting Via Video Conference

All attendees are expected to understand and abide by the Draft Universal Code of Conduct for the Wikimedia Movement.

The video conferencing meetup is a replacement for the in-person meetup. While attending and remaining anonymous is supported by the group, lurking is not supported and will be actively discouraged. All attendees are expected to use their User name as an identifier on the video conference call and to introduce themselves and their interest in joining the call on the chat channel of the call as a minimum. Participation using video and / or voice in addition to Chat is encouraged but not required.

Some members of the group have been the target of cyber bullying in the past and these measures are intended to support creating a safe space for collaboration.

If a new attendee joins the group with video and voice disabled, they will be encouraged to participate by the facilitator, using this script:

Welcome new attendee. This group respects your right to remain anonymous. This group has a policy of discouraging lurking as it makes some of us uncomfortable. If you are happy to introduce yourself over voice, please let us know what you've been working on and if you need help with any editing issues.

If you're not comfortable updating the group by voice, then that's okay. You have the option of introducing yourself and adding your user page link into the chat feature. The chat is deleted once the video conference finishes.

If you want to remain completely anonymous and not chat, then this meetup is not for you. We make comprehensive and extensive notes of the meetup that will be included in the meetup page afterwards. That's the best way to catch up with what this meetup has been doing if you don't want to contribute during the video call.

If you're not sure how to use the chat feature you can access it by clicking on the icon that looks like a speech bubble in the bottom left corner.

If, after an appropriate length of time, the new attendee does not participate by video, voice, or chat, the facilitator of the group will remove the attendee from the video call.

If the new attendee persists in logging in, the group will discuss abandoning the meet up.

Agenda and Notes from Meeting

1. Introduction to meet up by organisers (if there are any newbies joining us)

• Gertrude206 has been working a bit on the West Coast project, and is also writing an article on Gwen John, a British playwright, who had a play banned in 1912 by the Lord Chamberlain for "suggested rape" and domestic violence. She shares a name with Gwen John (artist), and Gertrude206 had a suggestion from the artist's article creator to put a hatnote on the artist's page but needs a refresher on hatnotes, disambiguation etc.
• Noracrentiss has been researching the history of Fairfield in Lower Hutt with a view to updating its article, but was concerned it might end up being too long. Group's advice was "don't worry - be bold!". Also while wanting to write a bio of the first NZ woman to get divorced (1869 ish?), discovered there is no "History of Divorce in New Zealand" or "Divorce Law in New Zealand" article so will probably end up working on those too!
• Pakoire reports doing a lot across Wikipedia and Wiki Commons and Wikidata. Has been contributing to the West Coast project, improving artist articles and Māori content. Has been in Gisborne taking photos on Wikishootme and working on Wikidata items for theatre venues and performing arts centres, eg Te Raukura ki Kāpiti. Finding it difficult to change categories that use US spelling to ones using local spelling, for example Theater/Theatre.
• Quilt Phase updated the group on his Wikishootme work and adding structured data to Commons photos, and there was an interesting discussion on the difference between Libraries and Library Buildings on Wikidata, much like Pakoire's points about Theatres and Theatre companies. Search Wikidata for "Lyttelton Library" for examples!

• In person meet up in Aotearoa 2021 update. Initial meeting of the sub-committee held. The Wikimedia User Group of Aotearoa New Zealand page has the latest update.
• Wikimedia User Group of Aotearoa New Zealand Draft annual report 2020 - I've added some content to this report including all the Edit-a-thons I could remember. I've also added a couple of twitter takeovers I did in the last year under the outreach section. I'm assuming this is appropriate but could the group discuss this and give guidance. I'm happy for these to be deleted if the group doesn't think it is appropriate to add them. If the group DOES think this type of activity should be included in the report can I encourage other members of the Wellington Wiki meetup group to add their contributions to outreach as I'm aware that some have undertaken talks and presentations encouraging engagement. Ambrosia10 (talk).

Pakoire will augment the section on the Playmarket edit-a-thon.

3. Further discussion

• Quilt Phase reported that James Taylor from the Auckland Museum wrote suggesting a talk to the Aotearoa New Zealand Online group by colleagues working on the Women in Red work he mentioned in his recent talk to that group. We agreed it was a great idea - see the group's meetup page for 8 November 2020 for more detail.
• Gertrude206 introduced the group to Wikipedia Library Wikipedia have negotiated access to databases of journals and other resources to help editors eg JSTOR and the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
• Group congratulates David Nind on winning the Kohacon 2020 Special Award for Greatest Overall Community Contribution for a Volunteer this week!
• Noracrentiss spoke about the Wikipedia:Meetup/Aotearoa New Zealand Editor Support group. The first of these is on Monday 26 October.
