• MurielMary agreed to to investigate via the affiliate rep at the Wikimedia Foundation whether there is a notification system for user groups. - Not at meeting. Transfer action point to next meeting.
• Einebillion agreed to add an agenda point to the next meeting to discuss the Wikimedia User Group of Aotearoa New Zealand communications strategy. - DONE

Open Refine workshop

• Einebillion is investigating setting up an Open Refine workshop for Open Refine beginners. We've got a number of people in this group that are just starting out with Open Refine what's the level of interest? I've heard back from the New Zealand eScience Infrastructure community person. She's consulting with her data carpentries colleagues on what would be best. Group size will be 15 to 20 people. I'm thinking we can ask around Wellington and perhaps get in touch with the National Digital Forum and Te Papa's National Services Te Paerangi group to expand the call if we don't get enough people just from the Wellington Wikicommons community.
• Update Einebillion had a meeting with Megan from New Zealand eScience Infrastructure and someone who could deliver the workshop who is associated with Canterbury University. The conversation ended with a commitment from Einebillion to work with Megan on obtaining funding for flights, workshop room rental and catering for a full day workshop. In addition the workshop may be assisted by others working towards their data carpentry certification. The meeting agreed that the workshop would be best held during a Saturday on the weekend to maximize the number of Wellington meetup attendees. It would need to wait until Alert Level One. There is also an option of a cafe session on the Sunday to go further on the more complicated coding that can be used within Open Refine.
• Action Point: Einebillion to approach Internet NZ and work with Megan on obtaining funding

Return of the physical meetup in Wellington

• He Matapihi is opening on June 2 but will not be open on Saturdays and Sundays until further notice -Quilt Phase
• The National Library is reopening including their Saturday opening hours from June 2. Einebillion emailed the WCL manager responsible for Libraries to ask when He Matapihi might be reopening on Saturdays. At this point with Alert Level 2 requiring us to maintain a physical distance of 2 metres my thought is that we continue with the online meetups until the country moves to Alert Level 1. Einebillion (talk) 22:34, 29 May 2020 (UTC) Update: Message from He Matapihi library is: Yes we are very much looking forward to getting back to full strength in our opening hours from the 15th of June. The current reduction is temporary only. Currently at alert level 2, whenever we are open we are still required to enable physical distancing to occur which would preclude groups meeting for two hours on any day. We continue to monitor the government requirements and make adjustments to our expectations from customers and offering different services or programmes. As soon as we are permitted to invite groups back, you will be very welcome to return, and at this stage, this is likely to be in the region of the 20th June. Einebillion (talk)

• Action Point Einebillion to update group on status of return to physical meetings at He Matapihi library as this will trigger the split of these online meetings and the creation of the Online Wikimedia Meetup for Aotearoa New Zealand on a monthly basis and the restart of the physical Wellington Meetup meetings.

Date and time of online meetup

• Time and day of online meetup: Feedback from a Wikipedia New Zealand Facebook group member that Saturday meetings aren't a good fit with those attending sports events. Can we discuss changing the date and time? What are your thoughts on the day and time?
• People like the Saturday day and time of the meeting and a variety of responses to possibly changing to a Sunday or afternoon. Everyone at the meeting had a different view.
• Action Point Einebillion agreed to create a doddle poll with different days and times options and will post it on the meetup agenda page, the User group of Aotearoa New Zealand page, and Wikipedia NZ facebook page.

4. Round table for participants to say what you’re working on and if you need help to do anything or want anything demonstrated - You can add requests for help here prior to the meeting if you want

• Quilt Phase has been experimenting on video upload to wikicommons via Youtube, Internet Archive. Schwede66 suggested using Vimeo as the intermediate step. Biggest difficulty is that Creative Commons licensing options in Vimeo are buried deep in options, and the upload to Wikimedia Commons takes some time but carries on in background.
• Oronsay has been working on new New Zealand wikipedia pages.
• David Nind has been working on the Alexander Turnbull Library Mix 'n' Match set. It's addictive. General conversation about how a number of the group had been contributing and frustration with the Peerage ids not having enough information for disambiguation purposes. Giantflightlessbirds thanked for organising the upload of spreadsheet to Mix n Match. Einebillion asked if there are going to be other uploads given that this is the top 2000. Action Point: Giantflightlessbirds agreed to reach out to the Alexander Turnbull Library contact for another set.
• Schwede66 is cleaning up issues with a data set loaded to wikidata on detailing New Zealand geographic points. The dataset owner seems to have got their regional data set from LINZ and used survey boundaries that are different from regional boundaries. The coordinates are also wrong so there must have been a conversion issue at some point. Schwede66 is using quick statements to clean up, and adding coordinates using google earth as a visual display / check. Canterbury is done. Starting on Otago. Noted that LINZ survey regional boundaries have nothing to do with the boundaries of the regional council. Lots of tidy up work. There are many steps to get the data correct and clean. Offered to write up the steps if others want to contribute to this clean up project. Giantflightlessbirds and Schwede66 will discuss afterwards as Giantflightlessbirds may be able to set up a group to help. Schwede66 is also working on wikidata entries for New Zealand Living Dames and Knights with an aim of creating a page list in Wikipedia. Ambrosia10 asked whether Schwede66 knew about the Listeria tool. Schwede66 was unaware of this tool. Canley has used this tool before and will show Schwede66 how to use the tool after the meeting.

• I updated the kākāpō population chart which hadn't been updated since 2011.
• I acquired the coordinates for the Heritage New Zealand list and have imported 5000 of them to Wikidata: map query --Canley (talk) 22:48, 5 June 2020 (UTC)

• Ambrosia10 continues to work through the published article listing pre-1910 Canadian and American female botanists and getting them into wikidata and identifying collected specimens in Bloodhound. Interesting deep dive into botany with a recent surprising New Zealand connection due to international collecting trips of some of the botanists listed..
• Doing some work with Auckland Museum to train volunteers on Bloodhound. Negotiated contract to ensure training notes can be released under CC BY. See https://docs.google.com/document/d/1x4ravzr4iXT11VGlNqPFxeBUbgGK0nt6aLEcK3P1PYc/edit?usp=sharing
• Also updated COVID resources into Wikicommons with the CC BY licensing and attributions and connections some weeks ago. Recently noticed that the NZ Covid website had changed the licence from CC BY to CC BY NC. Revoking Creative commons licensing is not permitted under the licence. We can prove that the licence was assigned to the site as Ambrosia10 had saved an archive copy on Internet Archive. In order to ensure the uploads are not deleted an update of the category page has been completed explaining the situation. Ambrosia10 is challenging the situation with the contact for the website including emailing an Official Information Act request asking for an explanation of the licensing change and whether this appropriate. The appropriate government minister has been cc'd into the email. The meeting had a general discussion about this situation. Schwede66 has a contact with Wikimedia Commons administrator to escalate any Wikimedia Commons deletion to if there is a problem with deletion. Contacting Keitha Booth, Independent Reviewer of the [Government Partnership NZ] might be an other avenue who would be interested.
• Oronsay has been working on author disambiguation Scholia is frustrating. Plants and bloodhound work is going well. GBIF has coordinates and creates doi for dataset downloads. In doing Bloodhound work it’s become clear that many specimen images are CC BY or CC 0 and are able to be used in wikipedia articles. iNaturalist talk by Ambrosia10 has helped as can now get images from iNaturalist for articles. Internet Archiving links from Bloodhound for referencing purposes. For some reason the Bloodhound links don’t work. It’s not accessible unless you have an ORCID. Wondered whether the administrator of Bloodhound would be opening it up more. The database is full of errors. Interested in making the curatorship of those databases more accessible as its the only way improvement can happen. Also interested in making sure the data improvements round trips back to the original databases. Currently doing this by emailing curators directly. Ambrosia10 commented that David (Bloodhound administrator) wanted to make sure that changes to the data should be traceable to others. • DrThneed has been working on Wikipedia pages for Dunedin mayors. Dunedin has a number of institutions that are against opening their collections. It is very frustrating. However the Dunedin City Council Archive is open and has a lot of great images on Flickr and using the mayoral images from this site on the Wikipedia pages. Asked Alison the archivist how come Dunedin City Council Archive was open in comparison with the other Dunedin heritage institutions. It seems that the Archives is in the IT team and that there was more understanding and support of open compared to the heritage section. Impact so far is 4.4 million views on Flickr. David Nind pointed towards Culture Waitaki's online archive that also has good material on some of the early architects and buildings in the Waitaki area. Group discussed how to help with the outreach and impact of the Dunedin City Council Archive to support them and hopefully influence other institutions to join them. Agreement was to reserve one of the meetings for an upload and edit-a-thon to use the images in Wikidata, Wikipedia and Wikicommons. Agreement that the group should start out by figuring out reporting tools on impact and then remeasure impact for a too-be-determined period of time after the edit-a-thon.
• Action Point: Einebillion to make a forward meeting an edit-a-thon to focus on this open collection and also identify reporting tools to help DCC Archives track impact.
• Einebillion spent the majority of the fortnight free time working through Open Refine tutorials and learning more about the platform. Has yet to do any quick statements to Wikidata using the database Einebillion is working from but is getting there. Hoping the workshop will help learn the product.
• Giantflightlessbirds

• I've uploaded a dataset of 2000 names in the Alexander Turnbull Library database to Mix'n'Match, and the easy ones have been done, but we need some detectives to hunt through Wikidata and find the people the computer couldn't match (if they can). — [ Giantflightlessbirds 00:43, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
• Commissioned by Auckland Museum to report on its wikimedia status and recommendations for initiatives. Will follow up to see if this can be released under CC BY.
• Currently based in the Wairarapa on a property with a heritage category 1 building. There are lots of people not in wikipedia and plenty of articles to write for this area so working on that e.g. Carkeek observatory. Working on wikidata and wikipedia articles.
• Also working one afternoon a week for the Dodd-Walls Centre in Dunedin. This institution is up for refunding so getting some of their science articles and coverage for scientists, citations, photos from archive into Commons. It’s one of the 10 research excellence centres but only 2 have wikipedia articles so plenty of work to do.

6. Discussion on the Wikimedia User Group of Aotearoa New Zealand communications strategy

Last week we discussed the User Group of Aotearoa New Zealand and how this group might receive and disseminate communications on what's happening in this group.

• Schwede66 noted there was a discussion last week at a Christchurch meeting where a website for the Wikimedia User Group of Aotearoa New Zealand was raised as a possible action for Michal Klajban. Follow up for Schwede66 and Giantflightlessbirds.
• Action Point: Giantflightlessbirds agreed to set up a monthly newsletter and set up an email network for the Wikimedia User Group of Aotearoa New Zealand. David Nind agreed to help with content for newsletter.

7. Demonstration of another tool

• Quilt Phase (talk) give a quick rundown of a Zoom preso by James Taylor at Auckland Museum they attended - much Wiki linkage love going on there. Action Point: Quilt Phase agreed to contact James Taylor, Auckland Museum to see whether he'd be interested in presenting his presentation via video conference to the group.
• There was an interesting Wikipedia Weekly podcast on how to edit food items in Wikidata. It is accessible by Facebook currently but is likely to be uploaded into Youtube in the near future. The media page for the podcast can be found here but there is a bit of a lag in information there. I'd highly recommend following the Facebook group if you are interested. It doesn't just deal with Wikidata but also has episodes about editing WikiCommons and various language Wikipedias. Ambrosia10 (talk) - Meeting facilitator accidentally missed this agenda item.
