Meetup Code of Conduct and Anonymity when Meeting Via Video Conference edit

All attendees are expected to understand and abide by the Draft Universal Code of Conduct for the Wikimedia Movement.

This video conferencing meetup is a replacement for an in-person meetup. While attending and remaining anonymous is supported by the group, lurking is not supported and will be actively discouraged. All attendees are expected to use their User name as an identifier on the video conference call and to introduce themselves and their interest in joining the call on the chat channel of the call as a minimum. Participation using video and / or voice in addition to Chat is encouraged but not required.

Some members of the group have been the target of cyber bullying in the past and these measures are intended to support creating a safe space for collaboration.

If a new attendee joins the group with video and voice disabled, they will be encouraged to participate by the facilitator, using this script:

If you are happy to introduce yourself over voice, please let us know what you've been working on and if you need help with any editing issues.
If you're not comfortable updating the group by voice, then that's okay. You have the option of introducing yourself and adding your user page link into the chat feature. The chat is deleted once the video conference finishes.
If you want to remain completely anonymous and not chat, then this meetup is not for you. We make comprehensive and extensive notes of the meetup that will be included in the meetup page afterwards. That's the best way to catch up with what this meetup has been doing if you don't want to contribute during the video call.
If you're not sure how to use the chat feature you can access it by clicking on the icon that looks like a speech bubble in the bottom left corner.

If, after an appropriate length of time, the new attendee does not participate by video, voice, or chat, the facilitator of the group will remove the attendee from the video call.

If the new attendee persists in logging in, the group will discuss abandoning the meet up.

Chat for sharing pastes, URLs and so on edit

The Jitsi video conferencing platform has a chat feature. This is used to share URLs and other commentary while the discussions are occurring. The facilitators may take a copy to help with writing up outcomes from the meeting on the meeting Wikipedia page. Any copies will be deleted once outcomes and notes are completed.

  • Einebillion explained that the committee had received a rapid funding grant for strategy meeting which took place last weekend. As a result the user group now has a strategic plan, a business plan, is making progress on ideas about reporting and the board is now working better as a team. So the meeting can be regarded as successful. Next committee meeting 22 June talking about next steps to progress issues raised during the strategy meeting. Grant application link
  • The Aotearoa New Zealand Wikimedia Usergroup was successful in obtaining funding of US$ 45,000 from Wikimedia Foundation. It hasn’t landed in the account yet but the agreement is signed. Funding period starts on 1st July and runs to the end of June 2023. Still to be addressed is how to do reporting on this funding. Einebillion pointed out that we have previously been successful as a user group as we’ve shared reporting duties across the project to multiple members of the group. As a result it was easy to collate into the annual report. However there will be a change of platform when reporting on the impact of the grant funding The previously normal January to December reporting schedule is changing to a July - June reporting and reporting document isn’t as easily available for collaborative editing. The committee wants to ensure everyone can collaborate and are able to make a contribution to the report without losing control of the financial portion of the report. The committee also wants to ensure the impact metrics are appropriate and are reported on in line with best practice. This is still a work in progress and the committee will keep the wider user group informed of progress on these points.
  • The committee is also struggling with transparency about committee minutes and documents. The committee is working on getting better at this but if any users want access to any documents the committee generates please contact the committee secretary.

  • New Zealand Wikidata Thesis Project aims to get New Zealand dissertations into Wikidata. Project Page, Project Dashboard. There is a google spreadsheet of theses authors with Wikipedia pages who need their theses adding to their page if folk want to work on this. Project Contacts: DrThneed, Giantflightlessbirds and Ambrosia10. DrThneed gave a more detailed summary of the work she has been undertaking (see the notes below in the Roundtable session. Of particular note is her discussions with a librarian with the London School of Economics who has been wanting to do similar work and the librarians outreach to Welsh librarians.
  • 2022 June 5-10 SPNHC 2022 Upcoming conference with wiki outreach representation from Ambrosia10. - This starts very early Tuesday morning and I'm very much looking forward to it! Ambrosia10 is a coauthor of a poster being presented at the conference about her Wikidata work on the Women Genera project. She intends to share a link to the poster with the group when it becomes available.
  • 2022 August 11-14 Wikimania Discussion needed about NZ contribution. Funding applications open for affiliates and individuals. Apply by 3 June. This is still open for proposals - see the main page for the event.
  • 2022 October Ada Lovelace Editathon, Wellington Pakoire will work with AtticEdit organising. Tentatively scheduled for weekend of 14/15 October. Still to confirm date and times. See this page

Update from James on the research project Wikipedia and the Aotearoa New Zealand History Curriculum Final Report
Update from James on the Auckland History Editing Project grant application
  • Last year applied to Wikimedia Foundation for funding whether teachers interested in using Wikipedia in the new Aotearoa history curriculum which has been pushed back next year. Teachers need local history resources - an important part of the curriculum that they are struggling with as high school teachers aren't history specialists. GLAM sector is about to be overwhelmed with bespoke research requests, especially as most of the GLAM sector is still operating with covid restrictions. Potentially 200,000 students with questions will overwhelm the GLAM sector. Because of this wave it is anticipated that GLAMS will be saying NO to teachers which is obviously not a great reaction from the GLAM sector. From the Auckland museum perspective they have on site visits of up to 100,000 mostly primary aged school children in a year. So Auckland Museum started to consider Wikipedia as a way to possibly assist with this. Adam Moriarty, User:Prosperosity and James Taylor met to consider a possible research project about this. They asked the question: what if we enhance suburb pages on Wikipedia with rich local history i.e. not just history about pakeha, but also include pre human and especially Māori history. That is using suburb pages as a starting point for learning about local history. There was also the potential for using editing Wikipedia pages as a learning tool for the research method. First Auckland Museum wanted to check with teachers that this would work.
  • Survey results. When asked the last time the teachers used Wikipedia for teaching 40- 50% replied that day to within three months of survey. 64% of teachers encourage students to use Wikipedia to access information.
  • The teachers had really nice things to say about the Auckland Museum as well, i.e. reliable and accurate. Got some great free form answers from teachers. Why use wikipedia - overview of topic is good, has useful links, references can be double checked and readers can examine talk and history pages for reliability.
  • National content was regarded as reliable content but there was a concern about local content. Teachers need support. Also concern was expressed about the reading age of Wikipedia articles ie 15- 16yo. The history curriculum Only goes up to 5th form. So the reading age is regarded as a bit advanced on Wikipedia.
  • The next stage of the project was to put together a proposed larger scale editing project. Teach 10 university undergraduates how to edit wikipedia and contribute to this local history article enhancement. There was also a GLAM outreach component to the project ie to Auckland Libraries, Auckland Art Gallery etc. Unfortunately although Auckland Museum made a funding application to the Wikimedia Foundation for this large scale editing project this was declined. They are now going back to the drawing board and are now considering perhaps doing a summer internship for one or two University undergraduates to undertake some of this editing.
  • Questions asked in the meeting: Did the museum receive any feedback on why the grant application was declined? James suggested that currently the feedback was scant. There was a discussion concerning the lack of alignment with the strategy of the User Group. Members of the user group pointed out that our own funding application clearly stated that the group was in the initial planning stages for strategy and that our funding request was based on getting the user group properly established. The user group members are still working out how the affiliate hubs are operated. It was recognised that most of the funding from the Wikimedia Foundation appeared to be going to the groups attempting to organise the affiliate user groups rather than to projects such as this. There was a feeling that the user group, because it was in its infancy, was caught out not being able to support the Auckland Museum with its application as much as it would have liked. The Auckland Museum will be giving feedback on transparency of funding process and is intending to make a smaller grant application to support the summer internship programme. They are also attempt to hold more Auckland based user group meetings to help facilitate the growth of the editors in Auckland.
  • James Taylor also mentioned he had undertaken some training via the Wikimedia Foundation and was intending to pass this knowledge on to teachers. See this, this and this for the Reading in the classroom resources.
  • Image description week on Wiki along with links to "how to" presentations. - This should be noted so that others can participate next year.
  • Important news for biodiversity articles! See this by User:Onco p53. Onco p53 outlined the situation of three old websites/databases being merged into one website but this results in the citations in Wikipedia also having to be updated. He has been doing some manually but intends to attempt to convince the developers to do redirects at Manaaki Whenua website end so that an issues are avoided. The main issue is the fact that the BUGZ website is likely to be turned off in a matter of days or weeks. He is attempted to ask internally for these redirects to be made. Ambrosia10 saw the new regarding this and has emailed Aaron Wilton the Manaaki Whenua herbarium data manager and requested the developers create url redirects from the old websites to the new to help solve the issue of articles citing the old websites whose data has now been migrated to the biotanz website. She has also reached out to Mark Graham from the Internet Archive and am in discussions with him attempting to get the vital BUGZ website entirely archived and made accessible via the Wayback Machine. She understands that he was emailing Onco p53 who confirmed this and added he had replied giving Mark as much information as he could around the issues. Ambrosia10 also put in a request for the National Library of NZ to archive the BUGZ website as it likely falls within the NZ legal deposit. David Nind said he would attempt to have a go at archiving the website using some other tools he had at his disposal. Ambrosia10 is intending to email the CEO of Manaaki Whenua on behalf of the user group asking for the website to remain operational until it can be appropriately archived.

  • Ambrosia10 (talk)- attended most of the #1Lib1Ref drop in sessions and during the campaign worked on NZ moth articles adding links to original description publications in articles using the CiteQ template which also forced me to create wikidata items for those publications not yet in Wikidata (normally historic biodiversity literature). During the campaign I also sent out a tweet which had this fabulous response. More biodiversity specimen images available for Wikipedia pages! I've also been working with some American biodiversity folk planning a workshop for under graduate teachers with the aim to create teaching resources about "Revealing Hidden Figures within Natural History Collections through Data Sleuthing". See this page for more information. I've also been working on the attendees of the SPNHC2022 conference ensuring they are added to Wikidata, linking them to their publications and institutions and identifiers.
  • Jetaynz (talk) - Gave a presentation on the Auckland Museum grant application and work related to that.
  • Einebillion (talk) - Strategy weekend, working on Trello to create a business plan of tickets to track work needing done by the committee. Has contributed to the report back to WMF about strategy weekend funding.
  • MargaretRDonald (talk) - invite Aotearoa New Zealand wikimedians to serve as judges for WLE AU 2022. WikilovesEarth work - state and council reserves & protected places need Wikidata items. As photo goes up, wikidata item created for reserve. Encourage to volunteer for judges for WikiLovesEarth competition. Want 5 judges, WLX tool - two sets of ratings. For them to align nicely to go to final judging round. Experience at playing with the Ukrainian tool. 2nd request - German pre jury tool to rate images 1- 5 all of photos Works best if get lots of people rating photos. WikilovesEarth Australia. Also noted that Smithsonian has gone CC0 for all the herbarium specimen images.
  • DrThneed (talk)- also attended most of the #1lib1ref sessions, and compiled a spreadsheet of NZ researchers whose theses have been added to Wikidata, and which can therefore be cited with CiteQ on their webpages. Thanks to User:Schwede66 for crossing a good number off the list! There are plenty left and if anyone needs help using CiteQ I'm happy to show them. Other than that I have created a couple of pages for FRSNZs but am spending most of my time on matching thesis authors to Wikidata for the NZThesis Project. I have been discussing the technical details of what I'm doing with a librarian at LSE which is proving helpful for both of us, I think, and she has mentioned the project in a talk she gave to Welsh librarians interested in uploading their theses.
  • Onco p53 (talk) - editing species articles and those using links that may become obsolete as a result of changes to Manaaki Whenua managed websites.
  • Oronsay (talk) - Helping Margaret with her work. Was on the #1Lib1Ref team, upset NZers couldn’t get in on the last call as annoyed she was unaware. Launching new volunteer into Wikipedia editing. A lot of helping Margaret's project - add to existing items or create items. Looking at genera and trying to find GBIF and IRNG to add. External identifier. Capture and link to National Parks. Women in Red work. WikilovesEarth work.
  • Prosperosity (talk) - Has been working on the Ockam book awards and Wikidata items. Also doing festival work, doing work on the request photos. Giantflightlessbirds asked How to find requests for images and was pointed to this link and this tool.
  • Paora (talk) - Recently Governor General has been doing investitures so he’s been uploading photos into Commons to get into Wikipedia. Adding to honours page as well. Attended the most recent Auckland Wikipedia meetup, a hard core group of five attending! And doing some “gardening” editing. Picking tomorrow morning will be busy for his as a result of the honours list being released.
  • Beeswaxcandle (talk) - Working in wikisource. Finished his HUGE music project (the user group all applauded!) and will be taking the user group through how to cite Wikisource and the templates to use at the end of the round table.
  • Giantflightlessbirds (talk) - Have been photographing Barrytown and Punakaiki for the Barrytown Wikiblitz followup, and any help would be appreciated. The West Coast Wikipedian at Large project is back in 2022, for another go from June through August, and is recruiting volunteers – prizes for the best and most edits, and a regular "virtual postcard" with updates. You can check out the 2020 project for a taste of what's involved (this time round it's a bit less hard-core). He has been doing Wikisource, and told the group a librarian has been employed to scan books on Westcoast history 5hrs a week continued for 6 months. Huge amounts of New Zealand material. Matching grant funding to continue this work. 50 NZ books etc available for loans. Can’t keep up so needs more volunteers. See this and this. Also doing Critter of the Week work as well as a follow up for the editathon for Barrytown. He's also been giving a grant to continue his Wikipedian at large Westcoast work.
  • Schwede66 - Noted that the user group had lost a valued member as User:Moriori had died. He was an administrator for many years and was a valued member of the community. All the attendees expressed their gratitude for his contributions to Wikipedia and the Wikipedia community over the years. Schwede66 has been spending a lot of time on administrator actions. Some of us know that he is an administrator when help is required. Use the template admin help and post on Wikipedia talk page if something needs sorting. Adding thesis to wikipedia, commons work, tidying up categories and related work. See this if you want to ask for help from an admin!
  • Marshelec (talk) - Attending strategy weekend. Really enjoyed it and starting to do follow up. Looking at what we want to know about users in NZ and other parts of the world. Initial exchange with Heather raised issues about privacy. Small amount of work on articles when see things news eg Ulva Island has rats. Rat incursion that got away on them & is needed to be documented in Wikipedia. Also working on the White island prosecutions. Interested in this as safety and design tutoring that he’s been doing that is taking up his time. Up skilling on teaching via online workshops. He's also the incoming treasurer of forest and bird - enormous complexity spreadsheet. Ever growing list of projects and to dos.
