Unable to come edit

  • Jon (talk) has the dreaded lurgy. Well, not the dreaded lurgy, but a lurgy nonetheless.

Agenda and Notes from Meeting edit

1. Introduction to meet up by organisers (if there are any newbies joining us)

2. Progress on Action Points

  • Einebillion to make a forward meeting an edit-a-thon to focus on this open collection and also identify reporting tools to help DCC Archives track impact. Do we want to do this at our next meeting of 29 August.

3. Round table for participants to say what you’re working on and if you need help to do anything or want anything demonstrated - You can add requests for help here prior to the meeting if you want

  • Quilt Phase is feeling like that the time spent on Open Refine pulls time away from actually editing. Reassurance given by group on value of learning Open Refine.

Wellington wiki Meetup after COVID-19 lockdown
  • Giantflightlessbirds has Open Refine questions too. Working with the Dodd-Walls Centre and made a wikipedia page for the institution. Now working on pages for individual scientists working at the Centre with junior editors. Will need help reviewing these as there are some tidy up needed. Featherston Book Town Festival - now has an author’s list and reviewing and creating wikidata entries and wikipedia pages for each author. Heaps of work to do. Continues to need access to openly available photos etc. Publishers and festival are yet to recognise the value of this opportunity. Proposed a meetup away-weekend in Featherston. Meetup was positively received. Left with Giantflightlessbirds to recommend a date and come back to the group. He’s putting in a proposal to be a wikipedian in residence with libraries in the West Coast. The proposal includes running public events and working with historical societies and libraries where relationships have been developed. He’s also approached NZ Opera as this needs work as well. NZ Opera also has connections with the Turnbull 1 wikidata mix’n’match group.
Update on the Turnbull names - Giantflightlessbirds has received the 12K names from Alexander Turnbull Library. Will enter them into Mix’n’Match as one batch for names of people and one batch of names for entities.
Is also investigating being a Wikipedian in Residence for Old Wairarapa Archives in Masterton. Very nice folks and very open.

  • Gertrude206 Has been working on British playwrights. Also completed publishing article on St Helens Hospitals. Need help with disambiguation. Would also like an image if we can find one. Presenting to a Probus group on 11 August. It’s going to be more of a show and tell but will try and recruit new editors and talk up this group.
  • Creating a disambiguation page and tidying up after a page move --Gertrude206 (talk) 06:17, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Ambrosia10 still working on her bible of Canadian and American women botanists - up to H. Attending the virtual Libraries Conference LOD4 and watching the wikidata track. It’s at a beginner level but interesting and on YouTube. Still working on Open Refine information from workshop. The tutor, Anton, gave Ambrosia10 a couple of sets of data on peer reviewed journals. Done one of two.
  • LD4 youtube conference links. -- Ambrosia10 (talk)
  • Einebillion (talk) hasn't been doing much except a bit more Open Refine learning and set up of Meetup information.

  • David Nind Not doing much from Open Refine. I learnt a lot of basics. Delivering a Libraries conference 5 to 10 min talk on wikidata. Think I know what I want to do but would be good to hear ideas. (General discussion) Topic will be modelling bibliographic information in Wikidata.

  • Noracrentiss Feel that I’m still in kindergarten. Published second article ever. (Yay) Made contact with the great niece of the person I’ve written about but I can’t use the information because it’s original research. I’m also working on an article on a female taxidermist. Some of her work is exhibited in the Kauri Museum but worried about copyright of images. Member of group will address this when we break into subgroups. Was thinking about presenting to a U3A group but got cold feet.
General discussion: How did people get into wiki work? Three of the group started because of Giantflightlessbirds’s Roaming Wikimedian year and one of his public events. Another three built on their practice using Giantflightlessbirds events. Then Wellington meetup was established. Two were pretty experienced already.
A number of people who came to the Open Refine workshop are trying Tamsin’s workflow using Open Refine to clean data, then exporting data, and uploading to Wikidata via Quick Statements tool.

  • Pakoire Reminded group about the Playwrite Edita-a-thon happening on August 15. Been writing articles and prepped for this edit a thon. 15 August. Edit a thon is looking at New Zealand playwrights and improving their wikidata and then creating stub articles. Personal agenda is that more things are added to Wikipedia about NZ theatre and trying to get more editors to join her in working on this topic. Currently trying to get images for an article on Rona Bailey. Was also wondering on how to get this article as a featured article. Also wants to team up with someone from the group to look at wikidata again to check the quality. Needs help setting up a schema. Group recommended looking at VIAF, ATL Tiake db, IMDB for notability references.
  • "Good article" criteria and guidance --Ambrosia10 (talk)

4. Review of questions raised during round table

5. Wiki News - add any news from the wider Wiki movement the group may be unaware of No update

6. Demonstration of another tool

  • WikiCommons structured data tool AC/DC. Can install it via WikiCommons preferences. Then you can use it to bulk add structured data to WikiCommons. For a video showing how to see this. Ambrosia10 (talk)

7. Get on with problem solving, editing, and chatting

  • We agreed at the last meeting we'd spend the remainder of our time working on the Mix'N'Match sets for Turnbull Names. Deferred.
