  NOTE: This video conferencing software link will ask permission to use your computer camera and microphone. You will need to agree to get full functionality. Google Chrome or Chromium is recommended for the best experience (not all aspects work correctly with other browsers). The Jitsi web-based video conferencing platform is 100% open source and fully encrypted. No account is needed and it's free.

Meetup code of conduct and anonymity when meeting via video conference

All attendees are expected to understand and abide by the Universal Code of Conduct.

This video conferencing meetup is a replacement for an in-person meetup. While attending and remaining anonymous is supported by the group, lurking is not supported and will be actively discouraged. All attendees are expected to use their User name as an identifier on the video conference call and to introduce themselves and their interest in joining the call on the chat channel of the call as a minimum. Participation using video and / or voice in addition to Chat is encouraged but not required.

Some members of the group have been the target of cyber bullying in the past and these measures are intended to support creating a safe space for collaboration.

If a new attendee joins the group with video and voice disabled, they will be encouraged to participate by the facilitator, using this script:

Welcome new attendee. This group respects your right to remain anonymous. This group has a policy of discouraging lurking as it makes some of us uncomfortable. If you are happy to introduce yourself over voice, please let us know what you've been working on and if you need help with any editing issues.

If you're not comfortable updating the group by voice, then that's okay. You have the option of introducing yourself and adding your user page link into the chat feature. The chat is deleted once the video conference finishes.

If you want to remain completely anonymous and not chat, then this meetup is not for you. We make comprehensive and extensive notes of the meetup that will be included in the meetup page afterwards. That's the best way to catch up with what this meetup has been doing if you don't want to contribute during the video call.

If you're not sure how to use the chat feature you can access it by clicking on the icon that looks like a speech bubble in the bottom left corner.

If, after an appropriate length of time, the new attendee does not participate by video, voice, or chat, the facilitator of the group will remove the attendee from the video call.

If the new attendee persists in logging in, the group will discuss abandoning the meet up.

Chat for sharing pastes, URLs and so on

The Jitsi video conferencing platform has a chat feature. This is used to share URLs and other commentary while the discussions are occurring. The facilitators may take a copy to help with writing up outcomes from the meeting on the meeting Wikipedia page. Any copies will be deleted once outcomes and notes are completed.

Wikimedia User Group of Aotearoa New Zealand – update and discussion (15 minutes)

Update from President, WANZ

The committee are preparing for the Annual General Meeting on 7.30pm on 21 May 2024. If you are interested in becoming a committee member there are spaces available. We are still looking for someone who is interested in becoming the secretary of the committee. Please contact me or Christine via Dianne at info@wikimedia.nz for more information and an application form. I'd like to take this time to thank all the committee members that work hard at establishing our strategic priorities, obtain funding, develop policies, manage the money, and organise or contribute to organising events for everyone to participate in. It takes a community to support what we do and I thank everyone in the New Zealand community who work on the myriade of tasks other than content creation. You are all champs.

Update from Treasurer, WANZ

The annual performance report for the 2023 calendar year is now essentially complete and ready for submission to the forthcoming Annual General Meeting. Once it has been approved by the AGM, it will be filed with Charities Services. There is likely to be a significant under-spend for the 2023/2024 Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) grant year, but we currently expect that WMF will formally agree to WANZ establishing an operational reserve, using the unspent funds from the 2023/24 year. We are currently waiting to hear from WMF about the details and amount of the grant for the 2024/25 year.

Wiki-Con Weekends, Editathons, Events and Outreach in 2024

If you're an event organiser, don't forget to add your event as a program to the Campaign Dashboard. The Dashboard is a key tracking tool for reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation and will help us ensure that we get funding in future years. If you are unsure how to add programs to the Campaign dashboard you can find further information here on how to create a new event dashboard and how to link it to the overall campaign dashboard. • Content: New Zealand Wikidata Thesis Project aims to get New Zealand dissertations into Wikidata. Project Page, Project Dashboard. There is a google spreadsheet of theses authors with Wikipedia pages who need their theses adding to their page if folk want to work on this during #1Lib1Ref. There is also a video on how to add thesis to people's pages. This work is ongoing and could use more editors to help out.

• Wikidata Levelling Up Days events This is an online event designed to welcome new people to Wikidata and to provide an introduction to a selection of useful tools and topics so you can start getting involved with Wikidata. During April 5–7 and April 12–14 there will be presentations, live editing and social events.

• Alexeyevitch^(talk) – Less time on Wikipedia, due to a trip to Japan. More active on Commons, adding images with an open license. Most work on Wikipedia was expanding the Christchurch article (still a lot more expanding to do). It is also satisfying seeing my neighborhood (suburb) in the article, I knew how rich the history was in this area, then I wrote about it and found some quality references. I will expand the article even more in May since I'm going to be at home pretty much all month.

• David Nind (talk): Mostly Wikisource, with a few random Wikidata and Commons edits:
  • Papers of William Shakespeare Hall, 1861–1895: finished validating pages
  • Castaway on the Auckland Isles: completed validating pages
  • Fairy Tales and Folk-Lore of New Zealand and the South Seas: completed validating pages
  • Transactions and Proceedings of the New Zealand Institute, Indexes to Volumes 1–40 + Voumes 41–51: steady progress validating index pages

• Schwede66 has expanded some articles (Andrew Richmond, Leslie Lee, 1868 Collingwood by-election, Joseph Beswick, Lorraine Warren). Helped Piers, who had come to the Golden Bay edit-a-thon, write an article (Milnthorpe Model). Was delighted to see that another editor picked up on my talk page comment on Richard Leggat that the woeful cricket stub can be turned into something decent as he's way more notable for things he's done since (I have a COI). Started writing an article on Christchurch amalgamations in support of tidying up the Christchurch article.

• Marshelec has put significant time during the past month into improvements to the Christchurch article. This article receives over 40,000 page views per month, and was in a fairly poor state, so improvements are really worthwhile. Other highlights were supporting the development of a new article Axel Downard-Wilke and then nominating it for DYK. Other projects have included creation of new articles about dark-sky preserves in New Zealand Wai-iti Dark Sky Park and Oxford Forest Conservation Area, and improvements to other dark-sky articles including Wairarapa Dark Sky Reserve.

• Oronsay has been doing all her usual editing activities, plus taken on updating Fellows of the Australian Academy of the Humanities on Wikidata and Wikipedia and finding a number of NZ connections. One being Douglas Ernest Yen, a NZer of Chinese descent, world renowned ethnobotanist, had a 1947 Master's thesis from Massey, so created the QID via Mix'n'Match and then added info - and had a lot of pleasure doing it.

• Paora has been organising the Auckland meetup for May. Looking at running this monthly. New Lynn is a great library and near a transport hub. Hopefully trains running next weekend. Keeping an eye on newly deceased New Zealand people's representation in Wikipedia and keeping up with new New Zealand articles. Considering proposing a new Wikidata ID property.

• Cloventt working mostly on the Christchurch article and getting the Victoria Square article to GA status.

• Einebillion asking for a dataset from Te Papa to be released. This is going through the process.

• Pakoire has been working on delivering a Wikipedia article per week on a woman. Has also been working on a presentation for ESEAP including the creation of a zine.

Review of questions raised during round table

• Wikisource – some formatting and other questions: (David Nind) ', FI vs using File, dhr, table templates vs using CSS, PDF vs DjVu formats, transclusion – rationale for not having the next section on the main page (default seems not to have it).
• Wikisource – help with transclusion of Fairy Tales and Folk-Lore of New Zealand and the South Seas: (David Nind) For some reason previous and next section links are not working, not sure why.
• Commons and paintings: (David Nind) Notability for creating a Wikidata item for a painting/art work for NZ. Project page: Sum of all paintings

Group discussion agreed that the paintings discussed were notable enough to add into Wikidata as images of the paintings were being included into Wikimedia Commons and they were in a public GLAM collection.

• Commons and document files: (David Nind) Using Wikidata information for document information – is it possible? Sort of like category pages. Example: Castaway on the Auckland Isles.
• Discussion around proposing a new Property to Wikidata. The group agreed that the Komako author list would be a useful ID added to Wikidata. The link to the [ https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Property_proposal Property Proposal application is here]. Two examples of similar properties were also pointed out. The MacDonald Dictionary ID and the NZ Museums ID.

Opportunities for skill development

• AU-Aotearoa Carpentry Connect 2024 – 23 May 2024: Hybrid – Melbourne, Perth, Dunedin, and Auckland. The Carpentries are a global community of reserachers that teach data coding and data science skills to other researchers. Carpentry Connect is a day of lightening talks and online connection between those researchers and interested people. It's free. Link to draft agenda.

• Research Bazaar Aotearoa is happening between 8-12 July 2024. It's an annual festival promoting digital literacy in modern research. These events aim to equip researchers with digital skills and tools to do research better. It's free. Registrations are provided via EventBrite. Sign up and they'll email you to be notified when workshop registrations open.
