Meetup Code of Conduct and Anonymity when Meeting Via Video Conference edit

All attendees are expected to understand and abide by the Draft Universal Code of Conduct for the Wikimedia Movement.

This video conferencing meetup is a replacement for an in-person meetup. While attending and remaining anonymous is supported by the group, lurking is not supported and will be actively discouraged. All attendees are expected to use their User name as an identifier on the video conference call and to introduce themselves and their interest in joining the call on the chat channel of the call as a minimum. Participation using video and / or voice in addition to Chat is encouraged but not required.

Some members of the group have been the target of cyber bullying in the past and these measures are intended to support creating a safe space for collaboration.

If a new attendee joins the group with video and voice disabled, they will be encouraged to participate by the facilitator, using this script:

Welcome new attendee. This group respects your right to remain anonymous. This group has a policy of discouraging lurking as it makes some of us uncomfortable. If you are happy to introduce yourself over voice, please let us know what you've been working on and if you need help with any editing issues.
If you're not comfortable updating the group by voice, then that's okay. You have the option of introducing yourself and adding your user page link into the chat feature. The chat is deleted once the video conference finishes.
If you want to remain completely anonymous and not chat, then this meetup is not for you. We make comprehensive and extensive notes of the meetup that will be included in the meetup page afterwards. That's the best way to catch up with what this meetup has been doing if you don't want to contribute during the video call.
If you're not sure how to use the chat feature you can access it by clicking on the icon that looks like a speech bubble in the bottom left corner.

If, after an appropriate length of time, the new attendee does not participate by video, voice, or chat, the facilitator of the group will remove the attendee from the video call.

If the new attendee persists in logging in, the group will discuss abandoning the meet up.

Chat for sharing pastes, URLs and so on edit

The Jitsi video conferencing platform has a chat feature. This is used to share URLs and other commentary while the discussions are occurring. The facilitators may take a copy to help with writing up outcomes from the meeting on the meeting Wikipedia page. Any copies will be deleted once outcomes and notes are completed.

Ambrosia10 (talk asked about formal presentations. Einebillion thoughts so far is that the weekend is aimed at digital inclusion and involving new editors from targeted community groups. Therefore presentations should be aimed at new users. However it's still unclear of the make up of those attending and perhaps people could do alternative presentations for more experienced editors. Is also thinking that we enjoyed the small bit of time we spent editing together at the West Coast WikiCon and I'd like to build in some time for this as well.
Marshelec asked about marketing. Mentioned that the Facebook ad was doing well for the May Women in Red edit-a-thon. Was wondering whether anyone can check with participants to see whether they saw the ad and attended in response to the ad. Was hoping to do something similar for the Auckland WikiCon. Doesn't need the confirmed programme but would like some ad information to promote the event.
Action: Prosperosity is organising the Auckland Edit-a-thon in May. He will ask attendees how they heard about it and respond back to the User Group.
Action: Einebillion will work on WikiCon marketing information for this use.
  • Ambrosia10 (talk) met with Caddie Brain the newly appointed Wikimedia Australia Community Support and Outreach Coordinator. This is a new paid position and she is organising the Wikimedia Australia group. As part of this organisation she is offering the support of the Australia Wikimedia group to the Aotearoa New Zealand group. She is planning a printing run of Wikimedia Australia stickers and offered to fund and print up some Aoteaoroa New Zealand User Group stickers and send them to us. I accepted this offer gratefully!
She also mentioned two campaign initiatives that the Aotearoa New Zealand User Group may wish to "piggy back" on or join in the effort of. The first is a #1Lib1Ref campaign that will be taking place for three weeks between the 15 May to 2 June 2021. Caddie offered to make this an Australian New Zealand event with us promoting it to New Zealand librarians. See the page for information on this. Alternatively she offered the admin support of Wikimedia Australia if we wanted to instead hold our own #1Lib1Ref campaign. What does the group think?
Outcome: Aotearoa New Zealand User Group decided to support this initiative.
Action: Gertrude206 will contact school librarian community (Done: contacted SLANZA and National Library School Service)
Action Ambrosia10 will contact LIANZA - (Done: Emailed Ana Pickering Executive Director of LIANZA on the 26th of April.)
Action Einebillion (talk) will contact Te Papa's Online Librarian.
Caddie also mentioned the other major campaign the Wikimedia Australia group is planning . That is a Wikicommons Wiki Loves Earth campaign. This campaign is being organised by MargaretRDonald. Again Caddie suggested that it may be possible for the Aotearoa New Zealand user group to become a part of the effort with the prizes being available to entrants from either country. If we agree to become part of the campaign we should be willing to have one of the Aotearoa New Zealand user group or alternatively find an outsider who would be willing to help judge the competition. The likely workload would be considering approximately 200 photos to decide the winner but obviously this would depend on the number of entries. Again what does the group think?
This (non-NZ person MargaretRDonald ) is currently terrified with the amount of work arising from Australia alone. Currently the Australian competition (see Participating countries in WLE2021) is due to start in five days. The schedule is very tight with respect to all the work needed, so my preference would be for Aotearoa to participate next year. Next year with one WLE experienced at the organising end, I believe both our countries would be better set to each participate and to help each other. MargaretRDonald (talk) 20:50, 25 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
MargaretRDonald talked about the project and explained the amount of data improvement work necessary to run this project. Ambrosia10 offered to help after remote attendance to the Auckland Women in Red Edit-a-thon. MargaretRDonald added that New Zealanders can participate in the Australian competition by digging out their old photos of trips to Australian National Parks, Reserves and all the incredibly many Australian places which satisfy the competition rules. (This would be very very welcome).
Caddie also very generously asked if there was anything else that Wikimedia Australia might be able to offer the Aotearoa New Zealand user group. In light of the travel bubble gave her the links for the two upcoming WikiNZ conferences to inform the editors of Wikimedia Australia. I also asked her to keep in contact with both our twitter feed and public facebook page in order to let us editors know of any meetings or events that we might be interested in either attending virtually or participating in. Does anyone have any other suggestions.
Action Ambrosia10 (talk) to email Caddie back with the group's decisions on the above after this meeting. As Caddie was in the meeting she was updated with progress.

3. Wiki News – add any news from the wider Wiki movement the group may be unaware of

4. Round table for participants to say what you’re working on and if you need help to do anything or want anything demonstrated – You can add requests for help here prior to the meeting if you want

Ambrosia10 working in Wikidata uploading NZ protected areas using OpenRefine with the help of Canley. Contributed to the recent Wikidata Youtube weekly broadcast on this topic. Also working on modelling scholarly article references to indicate a link to these reserves. Advised that you can use the property Main Subject if reserve is mentioned in the title or abstract of the article. Has also been working on Mix n Match and a deep dive on a woman botanist, Winifred B. Chase, resulting in a Wikipedia article.

Oronsay encouraged to do some more mix n match iNaturalist work. Found some scenic reserve items that might be duplicates in Wikidata. Ambrosia10 noted that the official name of the scenic reserve and what Department of Conservation call it can be different. Canley and Ambrosia10 offered to help work on disambiguation. List subsequently provided to Ambrosia10.

Prosperosity Auckland Museum has dropped a new issue of the Records of the Institute of Museum so has been working on a bunch of citations for articles on raranga (weaving) and southern ocean islands. There are over 50 citations out of one issue. Reminded group that the Women in Red Edit-a-thon is happening next weekend so please attend or attend remotely if you can.

MargaretRDonald Preparing for Wiki Loves Earth photography competition and having fun with CiteQ. Oronsay sent a list of wikidata items that needed work. Found the original articles available in WIkidata and as a result, was able to add "Described By Source" property to the taxon wikidata item as well as an excellent citation in wikipedia. Always worthwhile looking for an article by name in wikidata.

Schwede66 has spent time reviewing for Marshelec and asked the photographer for photographs. The Photographer has donated to the images to Wikimedia Commons. Has also tidied up street addresses for historic places. Has been working on this with DrThneed. It’s a pain that Listeria tool is not working with Namespace as it made the workflow more difficult. Also working on a List of King's and Queen's Counsel in New Zealand. The aim is to get missing people into Wikidata and eventually change table formatting as per talk page. Started in 1907 and is up to 1936 so a few more decades to go.

Marshelec inspired by the West Coast WikiCon to write https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ward_Beach and then take a punt at the Did You Know process. The article is currently in the staging area of Did You Know. User Group applauded Marshelec for giving it a go and noted this was a great outcome from the WikiCon. Marshelec aslo wondering how to get good quality boundary images of protected areas. Has been working with Pakoire on the Mount Bruce information and this led into working on the Treaty of Waitangi settlement page. The Treaty settlement page hasn’t been updated since 2008. Marshelec raised the idea of a proposal to do something with the page to update it. Needs to consider whether a list is the best option for the settlements given there is a good and more current list outside of Wikipedia. Would like to add this project to the talk page of the article and encourage further support for editing the page including posting on the Maori taskforce. Early days and may need some support from the user groupl. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Waitangi_claims_and_settlements

Gertrude206 Also inspired by the West Coast WikiCon and now has a Hokitika to do list. Visited Reefton and worked away on their page, and on the pages of Reefton Hospital, Reefton School of Mines, and Seaview Hospital. Had article vandalised but others had come to the articles rescue. Commiserations from User Group that Gertrude206 had had that experience.

Oronsay MurialMary shared an article on writing pages on women rugby players - a joint project of Guinness and Wikimedia UK. She wrote a bio which has been moved to Draft because of notability criteria for women rugby players. Has also been assisting City of Sydney Librarians with 3 edit-a-thons. First is an Edit-a-thon called Picture This. Will be assisting online. Feeling some concern about this as it wasn’t clear the picture librarians involved understood that ownership isn’t copyright ownership. Second is indigenous. Third is para-olympians - not sure of notability for those that aren’t medalists. Paralympians have different notability to Olympians. Schwede66 reassured Oronsay that someone attending the Olympics is inherently notable.

Canley has been working on the New Zealand heritage list, helping with New Zealand scenic reserves, and for Australia doing some work on the two state elections currently occurring. Also demonstrated the free and open source geographic information system QGIS. Uses this for the go-to geographic programme. There is a tool you can use to input coordinates and it will jump to it. There are complicated things you can do to produce maps and find coordinates. Can do intersections or if elections change and export a jpg file for wikidata / wikipedia.

David Nind Went along to the National Library of NZ talk about identifiers by Nicola Frean. Group got a shout out because of the Taika ID in mix and match. Ambrosia10 talked with Nicola prior to her talk and mentioned that the leaders in this type of work are the National Library of Wales. They’ve added 10,000 items to Wikidata. National Library of New Zealand with the Alexander Turnbull Library Names 1 and 2 sets in Wikidata have well over 12,000 contributions.

Einebillion has been working through Nineteenth century New Zealand artists: a guide and handbook https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q80587764 Has just finished the B’s.

5. Review of questions raised during round table

  • Group asked Canley to explain his geographic information system QGIS https://qgis.org/en/site/ It's an open source product that can be helpful for creating a geographical location that can be downloaded as a pdf for input into Wikimedia Commons. Can also do some other tricks.
  • Marshelec asked about learning journeys. The West Coast WikiCon and today's meeting has shown that there are a lot of tools that are unfamiliar and may be useful for a lot of members but there doesn't seem to be any resources that offer a learning journey. Einebillion stated that the top page for this meet up has a resources list for newbies to Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. These resources are mainly YouTube videos that have been checked and allow a newbie to gain skills through time. The intention with this list was to cherry pick out the best videos for learning as there are a lot of less useful or incomplete videos on different topics. The best ones are in that list and are stepping stones from the very beginner version to more complicated and in depth tutorials. Marshelec acknowledged these resources but emphasised he was talking about a guided learning journey. Oronsay stated that the Wikimedia Foundation were trying to do work in this space and pointed to this project https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Growth_Team_features. Group agreed that this was something that needed work. Einebillion asked how others documented what they learned. There was general acknowledgement that the documentation of How-To's in Wikimedia Foundation platforms wasn't great. Personally Einebillion has set up manuals to help with the development of knowledge around Wikidata. These are on the user page. see: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Einebillion/Teaching_notes Wikidata Teaching Notes and https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Einebillion/Manual Einebillion's Wikidata Manual. These are updated regularly and kept up to date for personal use as a remembering aid. Other group members stated they did similar things on their talk pages.
