You likely know this stuff.
A few days ago with a different IP, I took him out of Category:2014 deaths and replaced it with Category:Recent deaths—
I've just keyed <nowiki>[[Category:Recent deaths]]</nowiki> in case it doesn't show up—and it doesn't show up in the page. What's happening? Your explanation would be appreciated—I've yet to give the hidden category meta article a thorough reading. I'd like to put it and the deaths from heart failure categories next to 1944 births. Support request with team editing experiment project edit
Dear tech ambassadors, instead of spamming the Village Pump of each Wikipedia about my tiny project proposal for researching team editing (see here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Research_team_editing), I have decided to leave to your own discretion if the matter is relevant enough to inform a wider audience already. I would appreciate if you could appraise if the Wikipedia community you are more familiar with could have interest in testing group editing "on their own grounds" and with their own guidance. In a nutshell: it consists in editing pages as a group instead of as an individual. This social experiment might involve redefining some aspects of the workflow we are all used to, with the hope of creating a more friendly and collaborative environment since editing under a group umbrella creates less social exposure than traditional "individual editing". I send you this message also as a proof that the Inspire Campaign is already gearing up. As said I would appreciate of *you* just a comment on the talk page/endorsement of my project noting your general perception about the idea. Nothing else. Your contribution helps to shape the future! Automotive Building edit
Hi, I was starting an Automotive Building article of my own, (User:Alaney2k/Automotive_Building when I saw the link to your Automotive Building article from the Wikimedia Commons picture. I have not gotten very far. I have added City of Toronto Archives pictures and am working on that right now. Eventually, I was going to build up the content by looking through the Star and Globe archives from the Toronto Public Library website. Your content looks pretty good. I noticed that you have not done any work on it since 2014, though. Are you planning to continue it? Your work is pretty close to being moved into the main space, I think. WikiProject Good Articles's 2015 GA Cup - Round 3 edit
 Greetings, all! We hope that everyone had a nice summer. Saturday saw the end of Round 2. Things went relatively smoothly this month. The top 2 from 4 pools, plus the top participant (the wildcard, or "9th place") of all remaining competitors, moved onto Round 3. We had one withdrawal early in Round 2, so he was replaced by the next-highest scorer from Round 1. Round 2's highest scorer was Pool D's Tomandjerry211, who earned an impressive 366 points; he also reviewed the most articles (19). Close behind was Zwerg Nase, also in Pool D, at 297 points and 16 articles. The wildcard slot went to Good888. Congrats to all! Round 3 will have 9 competitors in 3 pools. The key to moving forward was reviewing articles with the longest nomination dates, as it has been in every round up to now. For example, 2 competitors only needed to review 2 articles each to win in their pools, and each article were either from the pink nomination box (20 points) or had languished in the queue for over 5 months (18 points). The GA Cup continues to be a success in many ways, even with fewer competitors this time. For some reason, the competitors in the 2015 GA Cup have reviewed fewer articles in Round 2, which has made the judges scratch their head in confusion. We've speculated many reasons for that: the summer months and vacations, our competitors are saving their strength for the final rounds, or they all live in the Pacific Northwest and the heavy wildfire smoke has affected their thinking. Whatever the reason, Round 2 competitors reviewed almost 100 articles, which is a significant impact in the task of reviewing articles for GA status. We've considered that the lower participation this competition is due to timing, so we intend to discuss the best time frame for future GA Cups. For Round 3, participants have been placed randomly in 3 pools of 3 contestants each; the top editor in each pool will progress, as well as the top 2 of all remaining users. Round 3 will start on September 1 at 0:00:01 UTC and end on September 28 at 23:59:59 UTC. Information about Round 3 and the pools can be found here. - More Wikipedias can now use information from any Wikidata item in any Wikipedia article. Previously they could only use the Wikidata item that matched the subject of the article. [61]
- The VisualEditor welcome dialogue has been changed. The intention is to make it more helpful for new users. [62]
Problems
- Wikimedia Labs' HTTPS certificate expired for most of Tuesday 15 September. To reach Wikimedia Labs and Tool Labs securely you had to ignore your browser's security error message. There was no risk to data security during this time. [63]
- Last week the notification system was split into two parts. This was temporarily undone because of a bug and performance concerns. It will return to two parts this week. [64][65]
- UploadWizard couldn't upload files larger than 5 MB when using chunked uploads. This has now been fixed. [66]

Hallo, I've started the review of Les Demoiselles d'Avignon for GA. In general it is a fine article which I'd be pleased to see as a Good Article. The referencing needs a little tidying up, there are one or two points that should be mentioned, and the legacy section needs a little beefing-up. 2015 GA Cup Wrap-Up edit
The second-ever GA Cup is now over! The competition officially ended Thursday. Congrats to everyone who participated, and especially to our finalists. The winner of the 2nd GA Cup is Zwerg Nase! He earned 408 points, over 100 points more than he earned in all previous rounds. He tied with our second-place winner, Sturmvogel 66 with 367 points, in number of articles reviewed (24), and they earned almost the same points for reviewing articles that were in the queue the longest (Zwerg with 322, Sturmvogel with 326). Basically, they tied in points, but what made the different for Zwerg was the advantage he had in reviewing longer articles. It seems that the rule change of earning more realistic points for longer articles made a difference. All of our contestants should be proud of the work they were able to accomplish through the GA Cup. Congrats to these worthy opponents! Our third and fourth place winners, Johanna and Tomandjerry211, also ran a close race, with 167 points and 147 points respectfully. We had one withdrawal; we found it interesting that competitors dropped out in Round 2 and 3 as well. One of the original judges and co-creator of this competition, User:Dom497 stepped down as judge during Round 3; as stated previously, we will miss his input and wish him the best. The judges were pleased with our results, even though fewer users competed this time compared to our inaugural competition. We recognize that this might be due to holding the competition during the summer months. We intend on looking more closely when we should conduct this contest, as well as other aspects of the GA Cup. We've set up a feedback page for everyone's input about how we should conduct the contest and what rule changes should be made. - @Knowledgekid87: If you're merging pages, it's common practice to ask for input from editors that have recently contributed to the page to provide their input. Not everyone is watching their watch lists.
- Regardless of procedure, take a look at the literal translation of kigurumi: "to wear a stuffed toy". It's a pretty good definition of a mascot costume, and it's a fair definition of people with animal pyjamas. It's a terrible definition of people wearing a costume to look like another person.
- While some Japanese stage shows include animegao costumes, animegao is largely a hobbyist practice.
- To me, and I can assure you to the animegao kigurumi community, merging the two is like merging Giant pandas and red pandas. Yes, at the heart of things both are mammals with mask-patterned fur, but it's really just a case that one of the two was badly named early on, and it's too late to change that.
- Ultimately, the pyjamas should be shuffled off as onesie pyjamas, the Japanese word for mascot shuffled off to there,elsewise we should have articles on bortargas and mascottes, and the article on kigurumi should largely be about animegao kigurumi, with a see also up top saying Kigurumi is the Japanese word for... The other two.
- As to sources, that's always been a challenge. It's still niche in English speaking countries. Many of the references are about mask construction, or located on social media sites. I'm looking. -- Zanimum (talk) 00:23, 11 January 2016 (UTC)

- The Capiunto extension is installed on test wiki. Capiunto provides flexible infobox functionality for Scribunto and generates HTML for infobox features such as headers and rows. It is designed for clean and modern infoboxes that are driven by data from Wikidata, easily usable across different language versions, and easily extensible.
- The visual editor now follows the TemplateData
formatsetting announced in November. When you edit or add a use of a template, the wikitext will be laid out in one of the two ways. [144][145] - The order of parameters and format defined in a template's TemplateData will be now respected. [146][147]

- Bare attributes in tags now parse according to the HTML5 specifications.
<pages from= to= section=1>will parse as<pages from="to=" section="1">instead of<pages from="" to="" section="1">as it used to. Please use<pages from="" to="" section=1>or<pages section=1>instead. This is mostly likely to affect pages on Wikisource projects. [156]
Problems
- Phabricator has been a bit unstable lately. This should be fixed now. [157]
- The PageView API shows wrong data between 23 February and 29 February for pages with special characters in their title. [158]
- The parsing change mentioned above caused a large number of pages to break, especially on Wikisource. [159]
- You may see falsely formatted edit links on both mobile and desktop devices. Mobile devices can also show incorrect formatted table of contents. This should be fixed soon. [160]
- Templates using TemplateData that were edited with the visual editor might have some problems in wikitext mode. This can be fixed by editing and saving the page by using the visual editor without making any changes. [161]

- Wikimedia has a new backup data center in Dallas. Because of planned work on this, you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for a short period of time on both 22 March and 24 March. This could be postponed to April 18. You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. Because of a test, there will also be a couple of minutes where you can't edit the wikis on 15 March starting 07:00 UTC. You can read more about the server work. There will be more notifications and updates about this.
- Administrators and other users with advanced permissions will need to have an 8-byte long passwords. This change takes place on 15 March. Users with too short passwords will be asked to change password the next time they log in. This was decided in a discussion on Meta and is because they can use tools that can hurt the wikis. [168]

- Changedforbetter, this is unfortunately typical behavior for Zanimum these days. As I noted above in #Talk:Aurora (Disney character)/GA1,
Reviews are typically expected to take no more than a week from the time of being opened before they are posted.
At this point, it is up to you whether you wish Zanimum to continue or not. Should you ever get tired of waiting, just let me know, and I'll put the nomination back into the pool of those waiting for reviewers without any loss in seniority. I've had to do so with several GA reviews opened by Zanimum so far. - Notifications are grouped by types. They are now counted by number of notifications and not by unread groups. That change may increase the number of notifications displayed. The earlier way of counting was often incorrect. Unread notifications will also be displayed first. [220][221][222]
- Special:Notifications now has a maximum width for the notifications list on desktop computers. This allows long titles and descriptions to be cut properly. Notifications are now also better parsed. [223][224][225]
Problems
- On 5 July Wikimedia Commons had problems and could not be edited for 20 minutes. For a short while after that the recent changes log and some gadgets were not working properly. It affected administrative actions on other projects too. [226]
- Users who have multiple unread notifications can mark them as read by visiting Special:Notifications page on their wiki.

Problems
- Last week Tech News announced you will get a notification when you mention yourself the same way as if someone else had mentioned you. This caused some problems and will happen later instead. [244]
- Creating and editing links to sections on other pages on the wiki now works again in the visual editor. [245]
- For some users, cross-wiki notifications haven't been working properly. The count has been wrong when only cross-wiki notifications were present. The cross-wiki bundle has been showing only the names of wikis and not the actual notifications. This will be fixed soon. [246][247]

- The login session when you choose "Keep me logged in" will now last a year. Previously it was 30 days. This will happen on August 16. [248]
- Some abuse filters will have to be updated during the week. This is because a bug will be fixed. [249]
- In compact language links, two new kinds of languages will be shown in the shorter language list: Languages that are used in the article's text, and languages where the article has a badge like "featured article" or "good article". [250][251]

Recently there has been a proposal to define a separate sister project for journals under Wikimedia and to move the pages under journal.wikimedia.org similar to the case of WikiSpecies. Recent changes
- The ORES review tool is now available on Special:Contributions as a beta feature. It can make it easier to find contributions that are probably damaging the wikis. The ORES review tool is available on Wikidata and Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Dutch, Turkish and Russian Wikipedia. [254]
- The
normandccnormfunctions have been updated to make it easier to write abuse filters. This also affects the TitleBlacklist extension. You don't have to transform "I" and "L" to "1", "O" to "0" and "S" to "5" anymore. [255] - The old pageview data in the "pagecounts-raw" and "pagecounts-all-sites" files is no longer being updated. You can find the new pageview data here. This happened on August 5. [256]
Problems
- Some big image files could not be thumbnailed. This has now been fixed. [257]
- When you moved a page over a redirect it would delete the redirect without saving it in the logs. This has now been fixed. [258]
Changes this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 23 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 24 August. It will be on all wikis from 25 August (calendar).

Future changes
- Sometimes when you mention another user they don't get a notification. You will be able to get a notification when you successfully sent out a mention to someone or be told if they did not get a notification. This will be opt-in. You can test this on the test wiki. [259][260]
- How you add text after an edit conflict might work in a different way in the future. You can test the prototype. [261]

- When you edit a table with the visual editor, pressing
Tabin the last cell of a row will take you to the first cell in the next row. PressingShiftandTabin the first cell of a row will take you to the last cell in the previous row. [263]
