Edmonton

edit

"The place was settled in 1838 by John Snell and first called Edmonton after a district in London, England. In 1859 the name was changed to honour Snell and to prevent mail from going to the new community in Alberta of the same name." http://www.ruralroutes.com/6650.html

"Snelgrove was known as Edmonton in the 1830s and 1840s. William Vermon Buffy had a tavern there for a number of years. After the post office was established in 1851 there was confusion over mail being sent to Edmonton, Alberta and it was decided to rename the hamlet after the Snell family who had settled in the area in the 1830s." Schedule B to by-law passed 10 March 2010. http://www.heritagetrust.on.ca/en/index.php/oha/details/file?id=892
