Hey- could you possibly update this list? I was going to do some manual work from it, but I see that most of the issues have been resolved. Thanks. J Milburn (talk) 11:54, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

Cleanup request backlog

Hi there Svick, I see that you haven't been very active here lately, but I was wondering if you are able to action the backlog of requests at User_talk:Svick/WikiProject_cleanup_listing. Thanks, The-Pope (talk) 15:49, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

I think that an automated/secondary method of modifying the Cleanup list registrations is needed. It's been almost two months since WP:AFL has changed it's name and the cleanup stopped being updated.The-Pope (talk) 00:29, 22 October 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, sorry about that, I've dealt with them. You're right that some method of managing this without me would be great, but I'm not sure how to approach that. User<Svick>.Talk(); 15:27, 14 November 2011 (UTC)

Cleanuplisting

Is the git repository up to date? Also, you could have a simple script allow myself (or an admin) modify the db with a hardcoded login.Smallman12q (talk) 15:05, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

Yes, it's up-to-date.
Yeah, I'll try to do that when I find the time. But it might be faster if you (or someone else) did it.
User<Svick>.Talk(); 15:38, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
I can write the a simple hard-coded hash login update script. Could you give me the sql commands being used to update the tables(it'd be easier than me perusing the source and figuring out the table diagram again).Smallman12q (talk) 03:34, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
All the code is in CreateCleanupListing.php. I changed it quite a lot since your first version. It contains the schema for all tables. The one that interests you now is projects.
  • If active is 0, reports for this project are not generated.
  • cat_name is used if the category name for the project can't be derived from the project name, it's NULL otherwise.
  • is_wikiproject is used only for display purposes, when it's 1, "WikiProject $name" is used as the project's name.
  • force_create is used when the listing for this project should be created right away, even if it's not time for it yet.
User<Svick>.Talk(); 12:08, 16 November 2011 (UTC)

It required a few modifications (see the repo), but it's working now. Could you send me an email with the hash of your password, so that I can add you to the list of users? User<Svick>.Talk(); 18:21, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
I've sent the email. My php is getting rusty...but still not bad=P.Smallman12q (talk) 23:14, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks. I've added WikiProject Video games...Smallman12q (talk) 15:32, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

Hmm, the data was inserted correctly, but the listing wouldn't be crated properly. There are quite a few rules you have to remember when adding the project:

  1. If it's a WikiProject, you have to exclude the “WikiProject” prefix.
  2. You have to replace spaces with underscores, because that's how the names are stored in the MediaWiki database.
  3. If the name of the project (e.g. “Video games”) is not the same as the project-specific part of the category name (“Video game” in Category:Video game articles by quality), you have to include the category name.

Some of those rules could be handled either by ListingAdd.php or CreateCleanupListing.php, but currently aren't. (You're welcome to modify them if you want to do that.) I have removed Video games for now, so that you can try again. User<Svick>.Talk(); 16:05, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

I see...I've created an updated cleanup listing .html so it can check/correct (client-side) before submission. I've also started instructions at User:Svick/WikiProject_cleanup_listing/Add (it's a reminder for now...but can be expanded). If I were to add video games, I would need to add Project: "WikiProject video games", Cat: "Video game articles by quality‎"?Smallman12q (talk) 00:54, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
I have published your changes and made some modifications to the instructions page (it's not complete yet, though). And for your example, you would have to add project Video_games and category video_game (the articles by quality part is added automatically). User<Svick>.Talk(); 20:19, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
I've added video games...hopefully correctly this time.Smallman12q (talk) 01:57, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
It looks fine to me. But the update that was running just now was interrupted, because toolserver replag is too high. So it may be some time before the listing is actually generated (could be days). User<Svick>.Talk(); 13:15, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
The report for video games is finished. It seems it's quite a big project with lots of “issues”. User<Svick>.Talk(); 01:12, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

It's a massive, active project...I know some of the folks there will be happy to have the list.Smallman12q (talk) 22:55, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

Cleanup Listing question

The report header says:

Of the x articles in this project y or z % are marked for cleanup.

While these figures are illustrative, what would really be useful as a "performance indicator" (i.e. a measure of cleanup progress) would be the number of issues, i.e. the total number of cleanup categories attached to articles in a given project.

E.g.

Orphaned articles (April 2009), Articles lacking sources (July 2010)

are really two issues, and fixing one of them is some kind of cleanup progress, even if the percentage of articles marked for cleanup would remain the same.

Also e.g.

Articles with unsourced statements (April 2007, September 2008)

might be seen as one issue or two issues (to be precise, this means "at least two issues") - I don't have a preference on this one.

What about displaying an additional summary info on the project cleanup status along these lines? GregorB (talk) 16:31, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

I have added the number of issues for each project. Now it says something like:
Of the 47 articles in this project 23 or 48.9 % are marked for cleanup, with 48 issues in total.
User<Svick>.Talk(); 15:50, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
That's it - thanks! GregorB (talk) 16:04, 14 November 2011 (UTC)

Svick (block logactive blocksglobal blockscontribsdeleted contribsfilter logcreation logchange block settingsunblockcheckuser (log))

Request reason:

The IP address I'm currently using, 217.112.171.197 (talkcontribsdeleted contribsWHOISRDNStraceRBLsblock logunblock), was blocked, because it was an open proxy. As far as I know, it's not an open proxy anymore. Since I can't edit because of this block, I'm asking for unblocking of this IP. Thanks. User<Svick>.Talk(); 14:56, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

Accept reason:

I've granted IPBE for now until the proxy issue is resolved. This is probably a dynamic IP. Edokter (talk) — 17:57, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

I'm hardly an expert, but it appears to me that it is still an open proxy (hash.es), but I will refer it to WP:OPP for verification. —DoRD (talk) 16:50, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

It appears as open as a barn door - http://whatismyipaddress.com/ip/217.112.171.197. I would suggest a read of WP:IPBE - and in particular the section "Used for anonymous proxy editing" Ronhjones (Talk) 17:04, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for looking into this. I don't need an exemption, but I'd like it if this block was removed (as long as the IP actually isn't an open proxy). Wikipedia:OPP#217.112.171.197 says that the proxy was open few hours ago. That shouldn't be the case, the proxy should have been closed for about a wekk now. User<Svick>.Talk(); 17:25, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the exemption, but it's not a dynamic IP. The place where I am had the same IP address for several years now. User<Svick>.Talk(); 18:06, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

Hello, so I'm one of the proxy checkers over at WP:OP and I've been looking into this case. I regret to inform you that this IP remains a proxy or zombie computer. If you don't believe me, here's a few sites which show it was a proxy very recently [1] [2]. If this is your home computer, I strongly advise running a serious heavy duty antivirus like Malwarebytes. If this is a router, it would probably be a good idea to reset it. Now, I haven't been able to verify that it works as an open proxy, but I have seen similar behavior before from virus-infected computers. Sailsbystars (talk) 01:37, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
Okay. I guess there's no point in investigating this further. Jut FYI, it's a Linux server with a school network behind it. It is intentionally configured as as proxy server, but that proxy should be accessible only from inside the network for a few months now. Since it's still reported, it's most likely misconfigured. Question about your WikiProject Cleanup tool

Since your toolserver tool replaces theh old Cleanup listing provided by Wolterbot I submitted a BRFA to remove the 500ish remaining instances of the Wolterbot cleanup listing. I did this in the understanding your bot does not use this template nor is it needed any longer. If you don't mind, could you comment on whether this template is still needed. That will help me to either Withdraw the BRFA and close it or move forward on the cleanup. Thanks and please let me know if you have any questions. --Kumioko (talk) 17:46, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the input I withdrew the request. --Kumioko (talk) 01:07, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

WP:DUSTY

Tim1357 made a bot that does similar things; see here. A user I know is interested in the idea of sweeping articles for which ones have least edits in x amount of time. Do you have any input on this? Ten Pound Hammer(What did I screw up now?) 18:15, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

  • You still interested in this? Ten Pound Hammer(What did I screw up now?) 00:29, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
Sorry for not replying sooner. What query do you want me to run exactly? If I understand the relevant discussion correctly, the query Tim ran for you is just all articles that weren't edited for the past 4 years. And that is almost the same as WP:DUSTY. Or do you want to run the “articles with fewer than 40 edits in the past 4 years” version? User<Svick>.Talk(); 18:54, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
  • Sure. Ten Pound Hammer(What did I screw up now?) 17:59, 11 March 2012 (UTC)
I have looked at it and I don't think a report like that would be very useful, because it would contain a lot articles. There is more (probably much more) than 5 000 articles that had 0 or 1 edit in the last 4 years. If you wanted to list those that had less than 40 edits, that would be probably hundreds of thousands of articles, which makes the report completely useless. User<Svick>.Talk(); 00:33, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Free public transport

Hi. I noticed your 2010 edit of Free public transport. I have two comments:

  • Encyclopedias are not an advertisement or phone book. Thus, facts about past times and past events should be not erased or concealed.
  • The article Free public transport deals not only with permanent tariffs. Occasional or temporary free fare is mostly considered as a test and argument in discussions about long-term zero-fare. Besides it, such cases characterize what kind of situations can be a reason for such fare.

--ŠJů (talk) 21:01, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia is also not an indiscriminate collection of information. I felt that the information there wasn't notable enough to be included. And the entries for other countries don't list cases where transport is free only in exceptional circumstances. I think that at least the entry for Prague shouldn't be there. Current cleanup issues

Svick, is there some way of limiting your cleanup list to issues that are current? I see articles like Current sea level rise that have a long list of cleanup tags, none of which are on the page any more. RockMagnetist (talk) 17:04, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

All of the tags listed there are still current for that article. What may be confusing you is that both cleanup banners (like {{External links}}) and inline tags (like {{Citation needed}}) are listed. If you still think some of them are not current, could you tell me which ones do you mean? User<Svick>.Talk(); 17:15, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
You're right, I was confused. I realized that I could quickly view all the hidden categories if I went into edit mode, and there they all were! That so many tags are hard for a human to spot makes your listing is all the more valuable. RockMagnetist (talk) 17:28, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
Another way to view hidden categories is to tick “Show hidden categories” in your preferences. User<Svick>.Talk(); 17:43, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Talk:9 in Wikipedia:Database reports/Talk pages by size

Wikipedia:Database reports/Talk pages by size currently shows Talk:9 as number 45 with 4.5 MB. Based on Special:PrefixIndex/Talk:9/ this is mainly due to Talk:9/11 conspiracy theories. I know the situation is messy to work out when talk pages have subpages and mainspace does not. It's no big deal and probably not worth coding efforts but perhaps a note about Talk:9/11 conspiracy theories could be added to Talk:9 in the report? It looks like the only such case in the report. Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon. It's 1-3 June and registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, just mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

Our goals for the event are to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.

Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 14:50, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

Good article nominees

Hi,

Please can i have access. Jezhotwells (talk) 16:02, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. I did not realise that there was an automatic update cycle. Jezhotwells (talk) 12:01, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

I was wondering if it was possible to configure the listing. Some of the cleanup tags are not terribly relevant for GA nominations (Articles containing potentially dated statements, Articles with links needing disambiguation, All articles needing coordinates, Persondata templates without short description parameter and Articles with dead external links being the main ones). If we could screen those out that would be very useful, if not it is still a great tool. AIRcorn (talk) 12:19, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Sorry, I don't have the time to do something like that. If you think some categories wouldn't be interesting for most projects, I could easily remove them from upcoming listings, but that's the best I can do right now. User<Svick>.Talk(); 15:36, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Categories in loop

I found out that you are the main mantainer of Wikipedia:Dump reports/Category cycles. On it.wiki, we need to make the list of category cycles too, but nowadays we haven't any experienced programmer to help us; I run a bot but I am not truly an expert... How did you made that list precisely? How did you parsed the dump?--Nickanc (talk) 12:37, 20 July 2012 (UTC)

I use a C# library I wrote that can parse the SQL dumps and a console application that uses that library to find the category cycles and outputs them to a file. I think the simplest solution would be if I updated the list on request and put it in a page on itwiki. But of course, you can run the application yourself, if you want. Although it seems there aren't many category cycles on itwiki, so it's probably not worth much effort. User<Svick>.Talk(); 13:54, 20 July 2012 (UTC)
Thank you very much! :) Lately, we found some cases of cycles and we wanted to investigate the thing, expecting to found many more than the ones you found, but, evidently, there aren't so many cycles.--Nickanc (talk) 20:30, 20 July 2012 (UTC)

Deleted WT:Ety/Part

Hello Svick,

I have been away as an editor of WP for a very long time. Not for any hatred of it (though that happens to us all occasionally) but more for lack of time; I had the misfortune after a long period of solitary unemployment to get a job and a wife in the same year.

I got a courtesy message on my user page about speedy delete of {{ety/part}}, which I imagine was purely administrative – the discussion is gone already. (I seem to remember vaguely requesting it myself after we did all the good work and moved it all around over at {{ety}}). I just did a "What links here" for {{enum}} which was made for this, if you recall my surprise; and has a lot of links, but only from articles about geography by transclusion (presumably an infobox). Good to them! It is rather a pity that as a metatemplate in WP's categorisation (I don't use meta- in that sense, it is not a template describing or generating templates) presumably it is only used somewhere in a GeoBox, where it could help a lot more in general templates (and {{pluralise-number}} could be useful to, tied with {{number to word}}.

Of course none of those templates is useful to people writing an article (well, {{ety}} is just as {{convert}} is), but VERY useful to those writing infoboxes &c.

My best regards. The good-natured to-and-fro we all had when designing and implementing {{ety}} I remember very fondly. I hope to be able to edit more actively soon. (Not that I am getting a divorce or losing my job!)

Code for Wikipedia:Dump reports/Category cycles

Hello Svick, I would love to be able to create a report like Wikipedia:Dump reports/Category cycles for la.wikipedia – would you mind sharing the code for creating this report with me? Greetings, --UV (talk) 23:56, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

I can create (and update on request) that report for you, see la:Usor:Svick/Category cycles (feel free to move the page to a more appropriate name and translate the description). I don't have any automation set up for this report, so I have to make each update manually (though I could set that up).
But if you really want to know, the code is at [3]. It's a C# console application which uses a library I wrote for downloading and processing the SQL dumps. If you run it, it asks for a directory where to save the downloaded dumps (if you don't specify it, you have to redownload them each time, though that is not a big deal for lawiki), the name of the dump (e.g. lawiki), the name of the root category (that seems to be Omnia for lawiki) and the date of the dump. The values in square brackets are defaults (in the case of the dump date, that's the last dump). If you want to accept the default, just leave the line empty.
After you set that up, it downloads the necessary dump files and finds the category cycles. It then prints them to the console and also writes them to a file with wikicode links. You can paste the contents of that file to a wiki page.
User<Svick>.Talk(); 16:35, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks a lot, both for the report and for sharing the code! I will take a look at both in the next few days. Again, thank you! --UV (talk) 22:16, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Could you make sure that all your examples show that the user must set user agent to something like "TheNameOfMyBot/1.0 (http://website, myemail@site) TheNameOfMyFrameWork/1.0" (see here for specifics). The framework must force the user to set this value, no defaults please. --Yurik (talk) 18:06, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

I didn't realize that was a requirement for libraries (the library allowed setting the UserAgent, but it didn't force it until now). I have made that change now and updated all examples too. User<Svick>.Talk(); 19:07, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

Dusty Articles...

I find the Dusty Articles listing useful (I do a blitz on it from time to time!) - but I notice that it hasn't been updated since 4th January. Is there a problem with the 'bot?

Regards, PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 07:37, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

hi i was looking at that too... its not been updated yet, even though you made contributions yesterday, so your about a bit! looking at the list (which is still from 4 jan) i see that pahtnomsteve has done some work on all of them up to #74... he's going to run out of dusty article to look at soon! 198.102.219.142 (talk) 07:16, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
Sorry about that. A database on my computer that I'm using for that came down for some reason. And I'm not monitoring this very closely, so I didn't notice. It should be fixed now and the list has been updated. User<Svick>.Talk(); 16:35, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, that's working nicely again... we're almost up to January 2008 as the oldest edited articles! PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 18:22, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Database reports/WikiProjects by changes

Hi there. Is it possible to get similar figures for a project which is not in the "wikiproject" namespace? I'm interested in Wikipedia:WikiAfrica. Thank you. --Elitre (talk) 13:31, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

I have added WikiAfrica to the report. But the Toolserver has been under very heavy load recently, so it won't let me actually execute this report (it takes too long). This is why the report hasn't been updated for almost a month now (normally it's every week). Once toolserver load decreases, the report will be updated with WikiAfrica included. User<Svick>.Talk(); 22:41, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
thank you very much. Would you please ping my talk when this happens? Regards, Elitre (talk) 23:45, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
The toolserver is in a much better shape now, so I have managed to update the report, now including WikiAfrica. And it seems the project is pretty much dead, with 14 edits to all its pages in the last year. User<Svick>.Talk(); 19:32, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
something must be wrong, since just I edited surely more :-) which pages does the tool count? Tnx, Elitre (talk) 09:18, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
You're right, I made a mistake in the code. It's fixed now, but the Toolserver seems to be having some issues again. I'll update the report when that's resolved. User<Svick>.Talk(); 21:18, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
You'll find a list of the involved categories at page 5 of File:WikiAfrica and Share Your Knowledge results, March 2013.pdf. Thanks! --Elitre (talk) 17:27, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
The listing has been updated, the number for WikiAfrica seems to make more sense now. User<Svick>.Talk(); 10:29, 20 April 2013 (UTC)

WikiProject by watchers

Could you switch Wikipedia:Database reports/WikiProject watchers from all users to active users? WPMED, for example, would be listed as having 301 rather than 572. WhatamIdoing (talk) 02:02, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

I didn't even know doing that was possible with the data that's available on toolserver. After looking at the source code of dispenser's tool, I have added the same code to my report. User<Svick>.Talk(); 22:19, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
Thank you! WhatamIdoing (talk) 01:06, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

Cleanup listing by month

Would you consider implementing an alternative type of Cleanup listing display in which the articles are ordered/grouped by month instead of by issue? In this way, one could address the oldest cleanup tags which are currently a bit difficult to find. GregorB (talk) 19:49, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

I have added an “Oldest month” column to the normal report (not by category). You can sort by it by clicking on the heading. User<Svick>.Talk(); 22:06, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
Excellent, thanks! GregorB (talk) 07:55, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

Mention on bot requests page

Hi Svick. :) This is to let you know that I've mentioned your WikiProject cleanup tool at Wikipedia:Bot requests/Archive 54#Merge requests by subject, and that I'd be grateful if you can give your opinion on my idea over there. I'm not sure how much my proposal can be integrated with your existing tool, and it's all speculation at this point, but it would be great to know what you think of it. Best regards — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 09:11, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

I had similar ideas when I saw that thread, so I hacked together a script that transforms Svick's CSV data into on-wiki lists. Right now it covers only one WikiProject and has limited features, I'll have to see for how much more I have time. — HHHIPPO 21:30, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
Cool. I think lots of projects would appreciate it if they had something like this. If you need any help from my side, feel free to ask. User<Svick>.Talk(); 16:29, 30 May 2013 (UTC)
I did some more tweaking, added new features suggested by Mr. Stradivarius and made the code more scalable, see User:HhhipBot/Cleanup listing. I think it's ready for some beta-testing now, so I'll notify the two projects that are included so far and I can also add some more interested projects. Most of the projects signed up for your tool are small enough to fit the whole cleanup list on one page, so adding them is trivial. Larger projects need some more configuration to split the lists in a reasonable way. I'll also talk to the BAG before letting the bot create tons of pages.
Btw: what are your long-term plans regarding toolserver vs. WM labs? My bot is running locally right now but once everything is stable I might move it to labs and let it run automatically. — HHHIPPO 11:14, 16 June 2013 (UTC)
Currently, I'm planning to stay on toolserver as long as possible. I guess it would make sense to migrate sooner if doing that would make things better for you (since you could access the database directly, instead of using the CSV). I'll think about that, but I certainly won't have the time to do that this month. User<Svick>.Talk(); 11:50, 16 June 2013 (UTC)
I think for now it's OK as it is. We'll have to see how much it grows, and how often there are problems downloading the CSV from toolserver, but right now there's no rush. — HHHIPPO 13:27, 16 June 2013 (UTC)

AWB edit to Valyrian languages

I've just undone part of your AutoWikiBrowser edit to Valyrian languages and thought I should let you know. The part of your edit that changed ‌ to its Unicode entity is the bit I've reverted, simply because I'd argue it's much clearer to see [‌[[ than <nowiki>[</nowiki>[[ in the phonology tables (where IPA phonemes are customarily surrounded with square brackets). Like I mentioned, I felt it would be rude (a) not to let you know and (b) not to explain why. — OwenBlacker (Talk) 19:30, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

I assumed that AWB removed that ‌ and that that worked correctly. Now I see that it actually replaced it with the Unicode character (which is invisible in code, which is a very bad thing). I don't like using ‌ for this, but it's probably the best option. Thanks for reverting my edit, I'll let the authors of AWB know, so that it doesn't replace ‌ in the future. User<Svick>.Talk(); 14:52, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
No problem. And thanks for letting the AWB guys know; I should have thought of that. For context, most occasions where AWB might convert it to the Unicode character it's likely to be obvious, as it would be between two Arabic characters (for example), so the difference would be visible.
Anyway, thanks for working on the article :o) — OwenBlacker (Talk) 18:52, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

Add new categories to cleanup listing

Hi, could you please add Category:Articles with incorrect citation syntax and all of its sub-categories to the cleanup listings? It would be really helpful. In the same vein, would it be possible to automatically pull up all articles in Category:Wikipedia cleanup? That way you would not have to update if new categories get added. Request to add WP:ANATOMY to cleanup list

Hello! I've been working to get some of the administrative tools working for WP:ANATOMY. One particularly useful tool is the cleanup list. For example, for WP:MEDICINE this will produce a lovely list of all the tags in articles under the project's aegis: [5]. Is there a way to enable this for our Wikiproject? I'm trying to use the user entry form here [6] but I don't have the right privileges. @MZMcBride: The C# source was always available at https://github.com/svick/Wikipedia-In-the-news-Feed/. Most of the logic is in Models/ItnFeed.cs.
I realize there was no way for you to find the repo, so I have added a link to it to the feed source; hopefully that will be enough for others to discover it.

Of course I now notice that the feed is linked from Wikipedia:In the news (at the bottom of the page). I swear I checked the talk page... I should add a link there as well. --MZMcBride (talk) 14:09, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

digital object identifiers

I'm interested in digital object identifiers, because I think they can be used to materially improve the ease of adding references.

I see you write some of the Universally unique identifier article, so I thought I would ask you some questions, although I see you haven't worked on it recently.

My goal is to persuade our main reference sources, such as newspapers and magazines, to use a DOI for each article, which could then be used to generate a reference, without having to fill out any other field.

This requires two things:

  1. Mediawiki ability to process the DOI (in progress)
  2. Media adoption of a convention, assigning a DOI to an article, and storing the citaiton fields in an accessible database

Obviously, some of our reference sources already use a DOI, whether doi, PMID or ISBN, but that still leaves many sources without DOIs. I see five hurdles to convincing sources to implement a convention:

  1. Inertia
  2. No value, if no one will utilize them
  3. The cost of registration
  4. The cost (IT) of building a system to assign values to articles
  5. The soft cost of writers/editors having to do something to add the DOI to articles

We cannot do much about items 1,4 and 5 If Wikimedia will use the entries, we can address the second item.

My question to you relates to the third item. Am I correct (see this site) that UUID are free? This might help, if some potential users balk at the cost of registration. (Of course, there is no free lunch. With non-free options such as doi, I assume registration includes addition of the entry to a databasse. With a UUID, your own shop has to handle this, I think.)

Any thoughts welcome.--S Philbrick(Talk) 15:36, 21 June 2014 (UTC)

@Sphilbrick: Yes, UUIDs are free, everyone can generate nigh unlimited number of them from their computer.
Theoretically, I think a better option would be to use the URL of the article as URI, though I'm not sure that's feasible, since some sites like to break URLs when redesigning.
But if you want to promote something like this that doesn't have any form of central database yet (like DOI does), I think the question of what ID to use doesn't really matter, there are going to many technical decisions and issues that are going to be much more important.
Also, have you considered other approaches that already exist, like RDFa or hNews?
User<Svick>.Talk(); 14:09, 29 June 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for responding. I'll partially respond now, then come back. I do not want to use the url as a URI. My main area of interest is women's basketball, and I have a few hundred links in to various pages on their site, because they record the results of all-star games, and many awards. A few years ago, they reorganized their site, and all my links went dead. I had 50 or so at the time, so it was a pain, but not a big pain. I emailed them last week on another topic, and they mentioned in passing that they were planning a new site reorg. I didn't know whether it would break the links, but I checked and see that ::I have 400-500 links. I just checked minutes ago, and see they have updated their site, and yes, links such as:
http://www.wbca.org/education/wbca-events/wbca-high-school-all-america-game/box-scores/
are now dead.
An anecdote to be sure, but I believe I recall other situations where a major newspaper revamped its site, and all the old links went dead. My goal is to avoid that problem.
I will look into the other things you mentioned, but my current fire to put out is to figure out how to fix all my links.--S Philbrick(Talk) 14:26, 29 June 2014 (UTC)
