I would like to believe the above. I became an admin with that as my guiding principle. But being a Wikipedia admin isn’t so simple. How am I supposed to judge someone who’s devoted more of their being to the project than I ever could? Someone who loves Wikipedia just as much as I do, if not more? Just because they don’t follow proper decorum when they’re arguing? This is why highly active editors become immune to regular policy enforcement. In a way, they outrank us. They’ll demonize us and so will members of the community. No one wants to be that admin.

So my ultimate conclusion? Trusilver is right. This is an academic society. You don’t get to be aggressive and hostile just because you’re behind a screen. And, yes, we’ll give you a chance to change, we’ll give you free passes, we’ll literally give you whatever help you need if you call us in. But if you’re a hostile, aggressive bully, you’re gone. Just until you change your ways. We’re not asking anything unreasonable. The top Wikipedia editor is the nicest guy you’ll ever talk to. Wikipedia is no place for malice.
