About this edit
editIn this edit you edited {{Template parameter usage}} (talk). However, you did not discuss this beforehand on the talkpage. This while the text is under discussion at that talkpage. Could you clarify why you felt the need to make this edit unilaterally? -DePiep (talk) 07:55, 4 April 2020 (UTC)

editHey, I just wanted to say that I appreciate your occasional reminders on Phabricator tasks that remain unfixed, even if it sometimes takes us a few months to get around to fixing them :) . It helps to know that they're important for someone! Matma Rex talk 23:49, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for noticing. I hope that it helps the developers as well. Sometimes additional examples of a problem can help debug more effectively. If there is anything I can do to help with the tasks (as a non-developer but experienced editor), please ask! – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:04, 5 January 2020 (UTC)
Help needed
editHi Jonesey, could you explain to me how to use the same tool as you did on - https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Laza_Kostić&diff=934163230&oldid=934158980&diffmode=source ? I would like to try to use it on Đura Jakšić. Thank you, Sadkσ (talk is cheap) 16:58, 5 January 2020 (UTC)
- The tool is available at User:Zhaofeng Li/reFill. The sections "To use reFill yourself shows you how to use it from a web page, and if you scroll down a bit, there are instructions for adding a line to your common.js file (a bit technical), which will give you a "reFill" link on the left side of every WP article, in the "Tools" sidebar to the left of the article. Let me know if you have any questions. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:25, 5 January 2020 (UTC)

Question
editThank you for fixing the Linter errors. As I am new to Wikipedia can you explain what they are? I noticed it involved removing the x225. Is it supposed to be 225px if I want to restrict or enlarge the size? Thanks. Boston1775 (talk) 06:42, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

Revisions to awards lists
editUpon review of your "lint error" revisions, it appears that the List of awards and nominations received by Deadliest Catch shows more errors than fixed. For example, the list bullets in the Emmy Awards table are no longer in vertical alignment, among other newly created visual inconsistencies. The "br" coding works for the RETURN function. It shouldn't be "br /". The "smalldiv|" doesn't seem necessary, either! Also during your revisions, the entire awards infobox was deleted. Please explain! Thnx. CYAce01 (talk) 22:25, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
- Your series of edits reintroduced Linter errors that I had already fixed, and also removed the navbox and categories. Rather than try to sort out the good from the bad, I reverted to a better version. I have sorted out the bullets now, as far as I can tell. Pinging Zmbro, whose useful dash fixes I also had to revert to get back to a working version.
- The underlying reason for the Linter fixes is that
<small>...</small>
tags can't wrap multiple lines. {{smalldiv}} allows multiple lines to be wrapped in small formatting. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:01, 1 February 2020 (UTC)- I redid the dash script. Is that all you both needed from me? – zmbro (talk) 01:24, 1 February 2020 (UTC)

Linter Error
editHi,
I recently made a Template, and you made an edit to fix a "Linter Error".
The following code
[[2020 United States presidential election| <span style="color: powderBlue;">2020 United States presidential election</span>]]
Was replaced with
[[2020 United States presidential election| <span style="color: powderBlue;">2020 United States presidential election<span>]].
Could you please specify to me what this was so that I could avoid more mistakes.
Thanks! CntrlAltDelete 6 Feb 2020, 0930 PST
- You have the replacement backwards in your text above. I added a "/" to the second span tag, which was an opening span tag before my edit. Each opening tag, like
<span>
, needs to have a corresponding closing tag, like</span>

Victoria County History
editThank you again for your corrections to Milton Keynes, all were very useful (and annoying that I had missed them in the first place). I thought perhaps you might find it useful to know that Victoria County History is a series, not a publisher. As I have just found out, the publisher was Constable & Co. Ltd.. So as an example:
- "Parishes: Bletchley with Fenny Stratford and Water Eaton". A History of the County of Buckingham. Victoria History of the Counties of England. Vol. 4. Constable & Co. Ltd. 1927. pp. 274–283. Retrieved 17 August 2009.
Use or ignore as you find convenient, no reply needed or expected. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 15:07, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note. That makes sense; I wasn't sure about the publisher parameter, so I left it alone while separating the volume parameters. I didn't look on worldcat or other library sites to check the details of each source; I just fixed the most obvious stuff that I came across. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:50, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

Hey Jonesey95, I was wondering if you could fix the Goofy article in the voice actors section in the infobox. Someone incorrectly changed "George Johnson" to "Danny Webb", the source it's stated that George Johnson did the voice from 1939 to 1943. I posted an edit request about it in the talk page, but no one hasn't responded. 2600:1000:B05F:FE7F:EC10:DAF:580C:D112 (talk) 13:58, 3 March 2020 (UTC)

Useless changes
editYou or your both made a number of useless changes in the article: Rank insignia of the Carabinieri. The changes were of the type / . When in a table, / is not needed to end a command; it ends automatically. Creuzbourg (talk) 16:40, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
- See this example:
Example | Explanation |
---|---|
Text |
without / after the text |
Text |
with/ after the text |
- The errors that I fixed are described at mw:Help:Lint errors/missing-end-tag. Opened tags must be closed. We can't always count on the Mediawiki software to fix editors' coding errors; in many situations, unclosed tags cause unintended formatting to be applied to text beyond the intended endpoint of the tag that was opened. Here is an example.
- Also, using
<center>...</center>
tags in tables is obsolete; see Wikipedia:HTML 5#Tables for an explanation of the modern way to center table text. Unfortunately, I do not have a script that can convert table cells to the new code, so I satisfice for now by closing the unclosed tags. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:37, 12 March 2020 (UTC)
- Well, it doesn't hurt anybody and if its amuses you, why not? Creuzbourg (talk) 20:16, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
Infobox school short descriptions edit
editHi Jonesey95, hope you're well. Noticed you made an edit to the automatic short descriptions, with edit summary "support country aliases". Say an infobox has country filled in with "USA", will this be displayed in the short description? All school articles should really be using the full country name instead of aliases and per the school article guidelines. All articles with alias country names are being changed to full ones on a gradual basis. Please let me know, thanks Steven (Editor) (talk) 20:29, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
- See the template's talk page. As far as I know, the change I made allows country abbreviations to be converted into full country names, just as the infobox itself does for the country parameters. See Kowloon Sam Yuk Secondary School. Does that answer your question fully? If not, let me know.
- I take no position on whether the use of country abbreviations should be allowed, but having a short description of "School in USA" seemed less good than "School in the United States". If support for conversion of country abbreviations is taken away after all of the abbreviations are fixed, that is fine with me. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:13, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
- If it allows country abbreviations to be converted into full country names then that's perfect, I guess the code you added could be removed when all abbreviations have been changed to full, but maybe there is no need to. Thank you, Steven (Editor) (talk) 21:13, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
Infobox road
editHey, it looks like you have worked on this template a bit. New article Route 37 (Iceland) has a error in the infobox. There is some magic going on here. I compared this to Route 36 (Iceland), and it looks to me like the name is coming from some other file (since it isn't in any parameter to the template). I can't find what needs to be changed. MB 04:12, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- It's in {{Infobox road/translation/ISL}}. You need to add a line to that template. Copy the existing format (carefully). – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:44, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- Done and thanks. MB 15:43, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
GOCE March newsletter
editGuild of Copy Editors March 2020 Newsletter
Hello and welcome to the March newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since December 2019. All being well, we're planning to issue these quarterly in 2020, balancing the need to communicate widely with the avoidance of filling up talk pages. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below. Election results: There was little changeover in the roster of Guild Coordinators, with Miniapolis stepping down with distinction as a coordinator emeritus while Jonesey95 returned as lead coordinator. The next election is scheduled for June 2020 and all Wikipedians in good standing may participate. January Drive: Thanks to everyone for the splendid work, completing 215 copy edits including 56 articles from the Requests page and 116 backlog articles from the target months of June to August 2019. At the conclusion of the drive there was a record low of 323 articles in the copy editing backlog. Of the 27 editors who signed up for the drive, 21 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. February Blitz: Of the 15 editors who signed up for this one-week blitz, 13 completed at least one copy edit. A total of 32 articles were copy edited, evenly split between the twin goals of requests and the oldest articles from the copy-editing backlog. Full results are here. March Drive: Currently underway, this event is targeting requests and backlog articles from September to November 2019. As of 18 March, the backlog stands at a record low of 253 articles and is expected to drop further as the drive progresses. Awards will be given to everyone who copyedits at least one article from the backlog. Help set a new record and sign up now! Progress report: As of 18 March, GOCE copyeditors have completed 161 requests in 2020 and there was a net reduction of 385 articles from the copy-editing backlog – a 60% decrease from the beginning of the year. Well done and thank you everyone! Election reminder: It may only be March but don't forget our mid-year Election of Coordinators opens for nominations on 1 June. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here. Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, Reidgreg, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list.

Infobox rail
editHi,
Do you know anything about this template? Stansted Express has many errors caused by unsuppported parameters - yet strangely they are still displayed. If I remove them all, there is almost nothing left in the infobox. None are listed on the doc page. I don't see any relevant discussion on the infobox talk page. Is this related to some old template merger? Am I missing something obvious. I don't see that someone has changed the type of infobox in the article recently. MB 19:54, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
- It looks like another template was merged into {{Infobox rail}} about a week ago, by Primefac, who appears to have missed adding a few parameters to the unknown parameter check. I have redone the parameter check to include those missing parameters. It is possible that there is a larger plan to deprecate certain parameters, but that is usually done with a separate parameter check (since deprecated is different from unsupported) and I didn't see any recent discussions on the talk page. Primefac is an active and competent editor and may have more insight than I. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:11, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
- No future plans, just somehow managed to miss adding... quite a few parameters actually. I'm genuinely not sure how that happened, but thanks for picking up after my mess. Primefac (talk) 20:13, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
- Teamwork makes the dream work. I figured it was an innocent mistake, of which I make plenty, but AGF'ing gets me through the day. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:16, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

Sorry for the instinctive revert; it looked too much like the inexplicable junk that newbie editors sometimes do, without enough of a bizarre streak. Hyphen or en dash?
editI tried to move Saudi Arabian-led intervention in Yemen to Saudi Arabian–led intervention in Yemen, but it turned out that it had already been moved to to the one with an en dash before—and then moved back with the claim "Saudi Arabian" is part of compound modifier
. I doubt it should be a hyphen, but I could be wrong. Do you know? Cheers, —Biscuit-in-Chief :-) (/tɔːk/ – /ˈkɒntɹɪbs/) 14:39, 2 April 2020 (UTC)

School short description
editSee Grace Christian Academy (Kankakee, Illinois), SD was mangled due to a <ref>. I just removed the ref from the infobox to fix the problem (you need to go back a couple of versions to see the reference in the |type=
). Not sure this is common enough to try to do anything better - there are rarely refs in infobox since they are supposed to summarize info in the article. All note the current SD has some issues with capitalization. I guess this is just what happens when constructing a SD in this fashion. Is the solution just to override with a manual SD in cases like this? MB 01:53, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- I think overriding is the best answer for this problem in the short term. You might ask at the template talk page for Infobox school, or at Wikipedia talk:Short description. Someone might know a trick. – Jonesey95 (talk) 03:20, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

Whitelist question
editI've seen you writing about the whitelist that you've been generating (I guess with help from my enormous lists), but its name is about all I understand about it. I add items to the whitelist when a short citation shows a new, red, hidden "no target" error, but when Ucucha's script does not complain about that same short citation. In those situations, the link from the short citation to the full citation is working fine, and the "no target" error is a false positive, i.e. not actually an error. They appear because the code that generates the error does not have the ability to look at the rendered page or inside of transcluded templates; Ucucha's script does have the ability to look at the rendered page. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:44, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
- Sorry, but I may be misunderstanding. Is the whitelist applied at a template level? Not per-article, surely? Then although in the majority of uses it would be correct to suppress the error, in cases when an editor screws up (mis-spells the default author name, or mismatches an explicit value for example) then wouldn't this genuine error be suppressed by the whitelisting? IOW I'm talking about per-article instances when the Ucucha script does show a red error when using an otherwise correctly constructed template. Which is, I think, Trappist's original intention. David Brooks (talk) 02:18, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
- The whitelist, in almost all cases, contains one-line entries that contain a CITEREF identifier matched with the name of a template. For example, one line might contain the identifier "CITEREFDrury1993" and the template name {{Drury-North American Steam}}. Any time that any page contains a short citation of the form "sfn|Drury|1993" and the page also contains {{Drury-North American Steam}}, no red "no target" error will appear after the "sfn|Drury|1993" citation.
- If someone mistakenly writes "sfn|Drury|1983" (wrong year) or "sfn|Drurty|1993" (author typo) in an attempt to use that template as a full reference, a red error message will appear. You can see an example of this at Antequera, where someone has used the invalid "sfnp|EB|1911" instead of the valid "sfnp|Chisholm|1911" to reference an EB1911 template with an identifier of CITEREFChisholm1911.
- If you see instances where Ucucha's script shows a big red error but the smaller "no target" message is not displayed, please let me know and I will take a look. – Jonesey95 (talk) 03:53, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the detail, as I admit I haven't been following closely enough. And I assume that, if the editor includes an overriding name or year in the citation template, that too would be accepted as correct. Also, to see if the 'smaller "no target" message is not displayed, I'll need to turn them back in in the first place. How is that done? David Brooks (talk) 14:33, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
- To show these hidden error messages, include the following text in your common.css page or your specific skin.css page:
.harv-error {display: inline !important;} /* display Module:Footnotes errors */
- That should do the trick. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:24, 23 April 2020 (UTC)

My edit request at the anon welcome template
editHi Jonesey95! In case you end up being the one to handle it, just wanted to say I did take your suggestion from last time to heart. The full sandbox at Template:Welcome-anon/sandbox currently reflects what I view as the most recent version of the page with consensus, as this edit has not been discussed and is not, in my view, an improvement. That's beyond the scope of the edit request, but I'm still hesitant to make the sandbox a full mirror for that reason. Cheers, {{u|Sdkb}} talk 05:24, 24 April 2020 (UTC)
Proposed changes to MonthlyArchive - you may be interested
editHi there, I saw your previous comments on the MonthlyArchive template talk page about the issues which the template has, and I wanted to let you know I've proposed some changes to the template which would hopefully address them. However, they are breaking changes for archiving bots, and would require some (minor) modifications to the bots so that they would be compatible.
When you have a moment, it'd be fantastic if you could take a look at my proposal and let me know your thoughts.

Ichthyovenator citation fixes
editHi! Been off the site for a while so not sure if you still do requests. But if you do, I would very much appreciate a citation template cleanup on Ichthyovenator, as requested in its current FAC source review[1], except for the more in-depth queries that I can answer (like page numbers and questioned reliability of some of the sources). Many thanks in advance! ▼PσlєοGєєкƧɊƲΔƦΣƉ▼ 23:13, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

Interlinear glosses
editHi! this edit did indeed fix a lot of the messy syntax, but it broke the interlinear glossed texts. I'm not sure I see what exactly was done there (did the script substitute tabs with spaces?), but the result was that the words from each of the two lines of the glosses are not aligned any more (an example of before and after). – Uanfala (talk) 14:55, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
- I don't see any pattern of alignment in the "before" page. I see that there is excess whitespace between words, but my browser does not render it in a consistent pattern. I did not deliberately change any whitespace characters, so I'm guessing that there were some unusual Unicode whitespace characters being used in a not-very-successful attempt to align text in columns, and that copying and pasting the text removed them. Per MOS,
The only invisible characters in the editable text should be spaces and tabs.
If you want tabs, use tabs. If you want tables or columns, use table or column markup. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:09, 30 April 2020 (UTC)- I'm not going to claim the formatting there was perfect – it wasn't, but it worked at least for some readers (I've just tried in another browser and it works there too). I've had a look again, and the characters concerned appear to be sequences of normal and non-breaking spaces (U+00A0). I don't imagine non-breaking spaces to be disallowed, so could it be that the action of copy-and-pasting replaces non-breaking spaces with normal spaces? My experience has been that Firefox makes such a substitution in the text window. – Uanfala (talk) 16:02, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
- For non-breaking spaces, use {{nbsp}} or . Using spaces or tabs with non-monospace text is not a valid way to align text in columns, however, since it will not work consistently from browser to browser. If you want columns, use columns or a table. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:28, 30 April 2020 (UTC)

Template:Infobox artist
editHi Jonesey95 noticing you edited that template recently, could you take a look at the bottom? There is {{Sandbox other|| to be adapted. Whitelist construction question
editAs I've been off on other project, I didn't familiarize myself with the footnotes whitelist construction. But I just took a look. Again, using my EB1911 example, I had naively assumed that the coding would be (a) Start with the default "Chisholm" and "1911" from the whitelist (b) if the template has a "last" parameter, substitute it for Chisholm (c) if the template has a year parameter, substitute it for 1911 (d) glue the two resulting strings to CITEREF and use that to validate the short refs. Not that simple, of course, when there is more than one author. But now I see it uses a brute-force method of permitting strings that include a long list of EB1911 authors (or author pairs, trios, etc). Wouldn't it be more robust to do it dynamically as I outlined? Maybe I should ask Trappist. Also, I have gathered a list of about 100 last names used more than once; I can send it if you want to check against your list. David Brooks (talk) 23:01, 7 May 2020 (UTC)
- I don't understand your proposed algorithm. I just know how the current whitelist works, which is indeed a brute-force method for almost all CITEREFs. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:21, 7 May 2020 (UTC)
- I'm referring to the concerns I had on April 22/23 above, but didn't follow up. I assumed you and Trappist were constructing a list of cite-wrapping templates along with their default values for last and year, so that when the footnotes module sees a generic {{EB1911}}, it thinks aha! the defaults are "Chisholm" and "1911", so this will generate a CITEREFChisholm1911, so there is a correct hook for the sfn. And I had further assumed that if the template had a "last" parameter ("year" is very unlikely), say
|last=Bain
", the module would think "Bain overrides Chisholm, so this emits a CITEREFBain1911", so a matching{{sfn|Bain|1911}}
would not throw an error. - I now realize that's not the case. So look at my current sandbox. I have both Harverrors.js (Trappist's version) and .harv-error enabled. What I see is (a) the first footnote, which is a very common error, is noticed by the js, but does not emit a sfn error (b) the 2nd footnote, also an error noticed by the js although less likely in practice, does not emit a sfn error because the author is whitelisted (c) the 3rd footnote is OK all round: it's valid and not marked as an error, but that's just because I chose an author in your current whitelist (d) the fourth footnote is correct, but emits an sfn error because the author is not whitelisted. Although it does suppress the majority of false positives, I still don't think it hits the mark. #1 is a false negative, #4 is a false positive, and both are pretty common. I appreciate the detailed work you've done, but I think the larger the whitelist gets, the more likely it is to miss genuine errors, especially the first category. David Brooks (talk) 03:27, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
- You are basically correct in your assessment, except that I have not found a real-world instance of CITEREFBrooks1911, so I have not put it in the whitelist, so the module rightly tags it as an error. It's basically the same as CITEREFChisolm1911, or any other misspelling. You are correct that whitelisting is imperfect. The key thing to remember is what we had before: a tiny population of editors using a Harverrors script, no way to find the errors except by stumbling upon them, and no way to tell regular editors or readers that something was wrong with the reference. Now we have a way to show and categorize these errors for everyone to see (if we unhide them).
- The whitelist causes a minuscule percentage of those errors to be suppressed and ignored, but the Harverrors script still catches them. So we have gone from a situation where 100% of errors were silently ignored to a situation where probably less than 0.5% of errors (1 out of every 200) will be silently ignored by the module (but still caught by Harverrors). Also, an incomplete whitelist causes something like 3% of module "no target" errors (about 1,000 out of 30,000, I estimate) to be displayed when there is no error; updating the whitelist will eliminate those. So that's something like a 97% improvement so far, on our way to 99.5% improvement. I'll take that any day of the week. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:00, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
- I admit I was lazy (it was late at night) and used my own name as a proxy for those EB authors who have one or two articles. I still come across new ones from time to time. Most of all, though, thanks for the detailed math in your reply; it's convincing. I do know I have seen some Chisholm1911 tags used for citations with a named author (due to editors who copy existing patterns, or those (ahem) who use an AWB hotkey), and I can probably scan and find any that are left. But I do want to return to the question: when it comes to cite-wrapping templates that pass through the standard
|last=
and|year=
or|date=
parameters, wouldn't that be something the footnotes code could handle directly? After all, it's already parsing the args. It would eliminate much whitelist maintenance. I realize not every such template is obliged to use that pattern, but the big ones probably do. Perhaps I should ask on the module's talk page.

|ignore-false-positive=yes
tweak, although I'm always comfortable with the semantics of the word "positive" in the case of finding an error. But they do bother me because, as I said right at the beginning, the messages are impenetrable jargon to the casual reader and require a very technical fix. On the other hand, the same is true of errors like "invalid access-date". David Brooks (talk) 14:08, 8 May 2020 (UTC)- I can't speak to what the module code might or might not be able to do; I am not a programmer. As for coming across EB1911 citation authors who are not whitelisted, I thought I had gotten all of them, but if you find one, let me know. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:53, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
- Well, I did look for all the articles with (a) an EB1911 reference (b) a specific non-Chisholm author (c) a Chisholm 1911 short footnote. I didn't find many but I seem to recall I made a pass at them some time back. This time I caught the following. Some should be fixed in the source but I'll leave them there for a while in case you want to look. There are no specific single names that I found not in the whitelist.
- Arghul, written by Schlesinger. She is in the whitelist so there's no sfn error, but there is, correctly, a HarvError.
- Battle of Carpi, one author is Swinburne; harv error not sfn error.
- Battle of Sahay looks right, except that "Flag" should be attributed to Swinburne as above.
- Esaias Tegnér has last=Gosse: Chisholm1911 should be Gosse1911; harv error not sfn error.
- Tarquinia has last=Ashby: Chisholm1911 should be Ashby1911; harv error not sfn error.
- Dezső Bánffy is wrong in a different way: it has a correct CITEREFChisholm1922, but it uses {{Cite EB1922}}, which doesn't seem to be covered in the whitelist.
- Archibald Campbell, 1st Marquess of Argyll and List of regicides of Charles I, written by Yorke and Chisholm (as author, not editor). Correctly coded, but CITEREFYorkeChisholm1911 is not in whitelist. I know there are quite a number of 2-3 author sfn's out there; would you consider putting all the combinations in the list?
- Parliament of the United Kingdom similar, but CITEREFMayChisholm1911.
- The Description of Britain has one of those odd "Chisholm 1910" entries (is that in the whitelist?) but also some genuine errors caught by both sfn and HarvErrors.
- I can make a separate query for specific authors aren't in the whitelist, but are otherwise correctly marked up.
- I'll be bold and make the algorithm comment on the module talk page. It'll probably not go down well. David Brooks (talk) 20:16, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
- The ones that say "Chisholm 1911" but should use another author's name are real errors, as the Harverrors script indicates. Those are in the uncategorized 0.5% that I referred to above, since "Chisholm 1911" is whitelisted when Template:EB1911 is present. I fixed the CITEREFChisholm1922, CITEREFMayChisholm1911, and CITEREFYorkeChisholm1911 entries by whitelisting them (after checking the EB entries for authorship); I don't know how my searches missed those. "Chisholm 1910" in The Description of Britain is using a regular {{Citation}} template, in which the full citation and the short citation match, but I think they are both wrong. That template should probably be replaced with an EB1911 template. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:31, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
- I did a more thorough analysis. If I did the template parsing right (it wasn't thoroughly tested), I found 440 authors or author pairs mentioned in [Cite ]EB1911 templates but not on the whitelist. Some of these may be typos of course. And, as I said, I occasionally come across new ones. However, I wouldn't panic. Right now I am seeing very few that are also represented in sfn/harv links. I came up with 34 of them, but I discovered didn't parse the sfn's properly because of the occasional disambiguation years (e.g. 1911a, 1911b). So I may have to tweak the code. Here are a couple of examples from both ends of the alphabetical list: Anthracite (Bauerman has 3 articles where I saw sfn's) and Eugène Boudin (Wedmore has two). Thoughts? David Brooks (talk) 17:28, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

- I have a .txt file of every find in AWB-ready format, and a .csv summary. Would you like them via email, or better a cloud link? As I said, there are a few mistakes due to custom citerefs, but I think most of them are valid. David Brooks (talk) 16:15, 10 May 2020 (UTC)

That template should probably be replaced with an EB1911 template. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:31, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
- I can't speak to what the module code might or might not be able to do; I am not a programmer. As for coming across EB1911 citation authors who are not whitelisted, I thought I had gotten all of them, but if you find one, let me know. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:53, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

Soyuz abort modes 'hone in' in article title
editHello Jonesey95:
In regard to your addition of [sic] to the title of a citation on Soyuz abort modes. I reverted this edit once because, in my understanding, 'hone in' is the correct usage and is not likely to be reverted by bots or other editors. Supporting this notion is the definition of 'hone in' as provided by Merriam Webster online dictionary. There, 'hone in' is defined as 'to move toward or focus attention on an objective' which seems to be the intended usage in the articles title.
Unless this is actually improper usage, I do not think the [sic] is necessary and can be distracting or misleading. Is there a grammatical rule I am overlooking either in the usage of 'hone in,' or in the application of [sic]?
Thanks, --Cincotta1 (talk) 23:21, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
- M-W tries to be nice about it, but "hone in" is nonstandard usage that has crept into common usage (see also "irregardless"). I compromised by marking the word with a template, like this: {sic|hone|hide=y}. That should ensure that other editors know that this error is in the article intentionally and should not be "fixed". Where "hone in" appears in text that is not a direct quotation from a source, I usually convert it to more widely acceptable standard prose, as one would do with any poor writing. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:46, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for fix
editThanks for the divbox fix; I sure wouldn't have substituted that template on my own. My TP looked different for some reason (probably because I haven't looked at it for awhile), and I didn't like the square-cornered ombox up against the round-cornered page border. The divbox finally worked when I substituted the tag, proof positive that coincidence ≠ cause . Stay well and all the best, Miniapolis 13:34, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
- That documentation appears to be out of date. I have tagged it. I don't understand substing as well as I should, but some parts of the template need to be wrapped in some sort of tags to make it subst cleanly.
- And yes, the divbox "worked" when you substed it, but ick, was that code horrible. I like the new look, though! You are right that it looks nicer than before. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:41, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
Multiple Links Question
editHey Jonesy,
In this article https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Badminton_at_the_2014_Summer_Youth_Olympics_%e2%80%93_Mixed_doubles how many links to the same person are considered acceptable? This page has 362 links total and only 228 words. I am thinking because it is a table it may be ok with the more than one interwiki link?
Thanks Galendalia Talk to me CVU Graduate 17:48, 27 May 2020 (UTC)
- That's a lot of links, but it's not a big deal in a table. See MOS:DUPLINK for guidance. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:33, 27 May 2020 (UTC)
formatting
editIn what way was {{ABBA songs}} broken? I didn't see anything wrong. Coagulans (talk) 04:55, 31 May 2020 (UTC)
- Your edit removed closing italic formatting tags. Tags that are opened need to be closed. There is more information at mw:Help:Lint errors/missing-end-tag. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:40, 31 May 2020 (UTC)
Lint error
editHi Jonesey95, Many thanks for your changes here,
LintHint was saying there was an error there but I had no idea what the actual issue was or how to fix it so many thanks for your fixes there :),
Thanks, Regards, –Davey2010Talk 17:17, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
- You're welcome! The problem is that the
<small>...</small>
tags are not supposed to wrap multiple lines. I created {{smalldiv}}, which is just a div tag that makes everything inside it small, in order to work around these errors. There are a few thousand pages left to fix.... – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:20, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
Links in external links
editHi. Thanks for your offer to help. I'm going to run my bot steps by steps (first run) to see what it can do with the current configuration. If you see patterns that could be added to the configuration, or improvements, tell me. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 09:30, 31 May 2020 (UTC)
- I put some possible patterns on your frwiki talk page. It will help me find patterns if you always start your runs from the beginning of the alphabet, as you have done so far. Just for the record, there are 22,860 "Links in links" Linter errors at this writing. I think your bot will be able to fix a few thousand of them. Merci. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:59, 31 May 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks. The bot works alphabetically, but what articles are scanned depends on how I launch it:
- If I run it on Special:LintErrors/wikilink-in-extlink, it only retrieves a few thousand articles, so not everything is scanned. I should see to configure it to retrieve the full list.
- If I run it on Wikipedia:CHECKWIKI/WPC 513 dump, it only works on articles where an error was detected by WPC at the time of the dump analysis, so only a partial list. Since then the configuration has been enhanced and the program also, so WPC can fix articles that are not in this list...
- --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 09:47, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
- I fixed the issue with going through only a part of Special:LintErrors/wikilink-in-extlink, the bot is currently running through the whole list. --NicoV (Talk on frwiki) 18:29, 1 June 2020 (UTC)

GOCE June newsletter
editGuild of Copy Editors June 2020 Newsletter
Hello and welcome to the June newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since March 2020. You can unsubscribe from our mailings at any time; see below. All times and dates stated are in UTC. Current events
Election time: Nomination of candidates in our mid-year Election of Coordinators opened on 1 June, and voting will take place from 00:01 on 16 June. GOCE coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought about helping out at the Guild, or you know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here. June Blitz: This blitz begins at 00:01 on 14 June and ends at 23:59 on 20 June, with themes of articles tagged for copyedit in May 2020 and requests. Drive and blitz reports
March Drive: Self-isolation from coronavirus may have played a hand in making this one of our most successful backlog elimination drives. The copy-editing backlog was reduced from 477 to a record low of 118 articles, a 75% reduction. The last four months of 2019 were cleared, reducing the backlog to three months. Fifty requests were also completed, and the total word count of copy-edited articles was 759,945. Of the 29 editors who signed up, 22 completed at least one copy edit. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. April Blitz: This blitz ran from 12 to 18 April with a theme of Indian military history. Of the 18 people who signed up, 14 copyedited at least one article. Participants claimed a total of 60 copyedits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. May Drive: This event marked the 10th anniversary of the GOCE's copy-editing drives, and set a goal of diminishing the backlog to just one month of articles, as close to zero articles as possible. We achieved the goal of eliminating all articles that had been tagged prior to the start of the drive, for the first time in our history! Of the 51 editors who signed up, 43 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Other news
Progress report: as of 2 June, GOCE participants had processed 328 requests since 1 January, which puts us on pace to exceed any previous year's number of requests. As of the end of the May drive, the backlog stood at just 156 articles, all tagged in May 2020. Outreach: To mark the 10th anniversary of our first Backlog Elimination Drive, The Signpost contributor and GOCE participant Puddleglum2.0 interviewed project coordinators and copy-editors for the journal's April WikiProject Report. The Drive and the current Election of Coordinators have also been covered in The Signpost's May News and Notes page. Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, Reidgreg, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist. To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list.

br
editJudging by this edit, <br>
is forbidden. Where is that documented? Is there something wrong with this authoritative explanation? Johnuniq (talk) 06:59, 9 June 2020 (UTC)
<br />
is equivalent to<br>
when rendered, and it makes the WP syntax highlighter gadget able to highlight formatting mismatches more easily. See this page for documentation. If Tim Starling or anyone else wants to provide a syntax highlighter gadget as part of the en.WP preferences page that can handle unclosed br tags and works as well as or better than the provided gadget, I'll be happy to use it. I'd rather have cleaner, clearer diffs too!- The br modifications make that diff a bit noisy; the goal of the edit was to close unclosed bold tags, e.g. around US Open and $2,605,102, which you can find near the end of the diff. Just standard boring Linter missing end tag cleanup (only a few hundred thousand left to fix [in article space]!). – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:24, 9 June 2020 (UTC)
- The highlighting provided with either VE or with wikitext editor 2010 both handle <br> fine (and are fairly reasonable at pointing out where things start and end). RTD's script at this time is broken TBH: wikitext is not and has never been XHTML and will not be XHTML into the future. (It should be disabled accordingly if the author is unable or unwilling to fix it. [At this point, it's the latter. One tool authors' opinionated stance on wikitext should not change the source at the end of the day.])
- As for diffs, use WikEdDiff and be happy ~ --Izno (talk) 17:31, 9 June 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the advice. VE is FAR too buggy for me to trust; I have submitted many VE bugs over the years, and not many of them have been fixed. I spend too much of my time cleaning up errant VE edits to be OK with using it to edit.
- I went to my Editing preferences and turned on "Enable the editing toolbar / This is sometimes called the '2010 wikitext editor'." When I went to edit a page like Omar Ibrahim Ghalawanji, which has br tags in it, the syntax highlighter gadget showed the usual false positives with
<br>
tags. I then turned off the Syntax Highlighter gadget in Gadgets and noticed that the 2010 editor has a pencil in the toolbar that enables syntax highlighting, which seemed to work. It is pretty different. I'll try it for a while to see if it works for me. Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:50, 9 June 2020 (UTC)- Izno, I found what appears to be a major show-stopper. I use AutoEd to fix Linter errors, and it appears to not work when I have syntax highlighting turned on in the 2010 wikitext editor. If I edit this version of my sandbox, turn on syntax highlighting, and run my custom AutoEd script that fixes missing italics, it does not make an edit. If I click the pencil icon to turn off syntax highlighting and then run the script, it fixes the missing italics. I know that not many people use AutoEd, but I use it to make thousands of edits to fix Linter errors, and syntax highlighting is key to seeing the errors. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:28, 9 June 2020 (UTC)
- Also, when I am working on a long page, and the edit window is scrolled down to a section in the middle of the page, if I click Preview, the edit window now shows the top of the page instead of the section I had been working on. I have to scroll in the edit window to get back to the section I was working on. That is some pretty basic user-unfriendly behavior, but I was unable to find a bug report for it at what appears to be the phab project page (the naming of various editing interfaces is quite confusing). I am headed back to the old wikitext interface unless you know of a fix for either of these issues. Thanks for trying to help. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:42, 9 June 2020 (UTC) [edited to add: I filed the scrolling problem as T254962. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:19, 10 June 2020 (UTC)]

- Someone's user page (mw:User:Remember the dot/Syntax highlighter) is not an authoritative statement regarding what wikitext is acceptable. There is nothing wrong with <br> and fiddling with it should not occur. Johnuniq (talk) 03:24, 10 June 2020 (UTC)
- As I said above, I would rather have cleaner diffs as well; I would leave the br tags alone if it were an option compatible with the tools that I am able to use. The syntax highlighter is a standard Gadget that is provided as part of the en.WP Preferences, which implies that it has community support, warts and all, just like the also-buggy Visual Editor. The syntax highlighter doesn't work right unless br is self-closed; Visual Editor leaves trashy wikicode lying around. There is no perfect tool, apparently, and developers appear to have other priorities. At least we gnomes won't be unemployed any time soon!
- As I said above, if there is a syntax highlighter that works, I will use it, but I haven't found one yet. I gave the one included with the 2010 wikitext editor a try, and I found two serious show-stopping bugs in the first hour, so I'm back to the functional (although not ideal, obviously) old-timey wikitext editor.
- I started a discussion at WP talk:AutoEd to see if anyone knew about the apparent incompatibility between the 2010 wikitext editor and AutoEd. TheDJ has pointed out a possible reason for the incompatibility; I don't know if anyone is available to fix it. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:03, 10 June 2020 (UTC)

Discussion about Template:Ruby
editI've looked into the changes you've made the other day to the text size within Template:Ruby and its related language variations, and since the changes were made in respect to font size limit guidelines, I feel I'm in no position to argue with it. However, I would like to invite you to a discussion I've started over the general usage of the template within the articles, especially those for Japanese works that frequently convey foreign loanwords through furigana; further details are on the linked talk page. User:SubZeroSilver (talk) 19:22, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note. I have commented there. I'm happy to help work on the ruby templates if the consensus is that their format should change. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:53, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
- Minor technical note that doesn't really have a bearing on the WP talk: you should add the CSS to the templatestyles page. --Izno (talk) 21:10, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
- Feel free to do that; I don't have the confidence to do it, since I haven't messed around with templatestyles yet. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:20, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

Undoing a lot of my revisions Comment
editHi Jonesey95,
I noticed you reverted a lot of my wp:cleaner edits for the reference tables missing. I incorporated the new heading into them based on "This article includes a list of references, but its sources remain unclear because it has insufficient inline citations. (April 2020)" I used that header to point out to create the inline citations are needed and to not just create a list of sources used, however, you said having a bulleted list is just as good. Can you please clarify this statement? Do you recommend a better way to do this? Thanks - Bakertheacre (talk) 21:24, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
- It is not uncommon for articles to have general references in addition to in-line references. Your edits were correct to add {{reflist}} templates to articles with in-line references but no reflist template, but the new heading you added was not like anything I have ever seen. If you want to separate the reflist from the general references, a heading like "General references" above the general references is much more common and advised by the guideline I linked above. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:41, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you Bakertheacre (talk) 21:41, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
SJJIF Worlds Gi & NoGi Tournament(NABJJ) Comment
editHi again Jonesey95,
I noticed on SJJIF Worlds Gi & NoGi Tournament(NABJJ) you stated to fix my script. I am just selecting what WP:Cleaner is putting up as a recommendation. As you can see in this article Brazilian_jiu-jitsu I did put the proper case for it as that is how it is defined throughout the world. As far as Epee, numerous websites list it in a variety of ways, including Epee, Épee, Epée, and Épée. How could I do this properly when various sources list it differently? Thank you in advance for any recommendations you have. Bakertheacre (talk) 21:39, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
- You have to evaluate any tool's recommendation critically; tools make errors, and you as the human operating the tool are responsible for your edits. Your brain is your best tool; use it every time you make an edit. As for the person's name, we go with what the source says. In this case, the source is https://www.sjjif.com/public/results/351, which says "Epee". – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:43, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks. What about BJJ? Using my brain says it should be how I edited it, which you undid. Since there is an article on Wikipedia that lists it in sentence case, would it be correct? Thanks Bakertheacre (talk) 21:47, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
- Two answers: 1. If the source lists a tournament name or award name or division in Word Case, you could be justified in using Word Case. 2. If you want to go with MOS instead and use Sentence case for the headers, do that. What is much less reasonable is to user Word Case For All Except two words In A Header, which is what your edit did. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:56, 23 June 2020 (UTC)

Pieter Pourbus and copyediting
editHello, As part of the May 2020 GOCE drive, I copyedited the article Pieter Pourbus. I attempted to remove flowery language and to make the article more encyclopedic in tone. However, another editor who had worked on the article previously disagreed with my edits, and is now reinserting flowery language and generally reverting my edits. While I appreciate their taking the time to look over my edits, I feel that their editing goes against NPOV and the MOS. However, they have expressed hostility towards me editing the article, and I'm afraid that if I attempt to discuss and edit the article, the situation would devolve into a flame war. I am unsure of how to handle the situation. Any advice? The war moose (talk) 23:29, 10 June 2020 (UTC)
- The easiest thing to do it let it go. Remove the page from your watchlist. Multiple people gave this person feedback, but they apparently did not listen. It's not worth getting in a big fight about it. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:25, 11 June 2020 (UTC)

Too tired to think of a subject
editI do not appreciate you editing your archived thread to talk down to or patronize me. What you saw was anger, plain and simple. I don't appreciate you stalking my contributions to try and find things to blame my anger on. I'm angry because of the way I've been treated, not because I'm autistic.
I'd like it if you removed the last edit you made to that thread. My actions (right or wrong) speak for themselves. I've explained them several times now. Don't attempt to speak for me or assign incorrect motives to what I've said.
Maybe you'll understand if I put it this way: Everywhere I go, everything I do, people attribute my actions to autism. I have no agency. I'm not even a person anymore because all people care about is a fucking label a shrink placed on me a decade ago. I'm crying now. I'm not sure I'll be able to explain how upsetting it is to be completely brushed off as "just an autist".
Please just delete it. 3nk1namshub (talk) 06:20, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
- As you appear to be either offline or AFK, I've reverted it with an explanation. As I said in the edit message, please feel free to rewrite in a way that does not remove my agency by bringing up my autism. 3nk1namshub (talk) 06:39, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
- From my own perspective: I do not think it is ever appropriate to frame another editor's actions as being due to a particular disorder, even when that editor has publicly declared one; correlation does not imply causation. Your comment may not on its own violate policy, and @3nk1namshub: is being unnecessarily confrontational over it, but I also advise you to remove that comment out of your own accord. People with disorders ought to be included, not framed as "different", especially in cases like this where they do not like being singled out. This is something I have learned from real life interactions with numerous people, including some with disorders.--Jasper Deng (talk) 07:17, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
- As a final message, I'd like to apologize for reverting your edit. In my anger about what I perceived as someone removing my agency, I attempted to deprive you of yours. I would still like the comment in question to be removed, but I will leave that for you to decide. 3nk1namshub (they/them) (talk) 07:24, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
- I have removed the comment. It was an attempt to be helpful, provide context, and encourage other editors to look at the conversation in a different light, but it did not have the desired effect. I apologize. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:11, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi Jonesey95,
I noticed your sandbox in the Category:Proposed deletion as of 3 July 2020 maintenance category, which is somewhat unusual as user sandboxes are not typically PROD'ed as they can be deleted per speedy deletion if requested by the author in their own userspace. Since you were both the only editor and since it was within your own userspace, I just thought I'd stop by to give you a friendly tip that you can accelerate requests for deletion in your own userspace by adding, or replacing the PROD tag with, {{Db-u1}} to the top of any page or subpage within your userspace. Turnaround time by an administrator is usually < 24 hours versus waiting the full seven days with PROD.
If you want to leave it up for proposed deletion, though, that is fine as well. I just thought I'd stop by and make you aware of that option.
You can also use Twinkle, in your user preferences to semi-automate the tagging process, if you wish. Happy editing! :)
Cheers,
Dmehus (talk) 16:24, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
- Dmehus, thanks for the note. I was working on the PROD templates and experimenting in my sandbox. I have cleared it. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:09, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

What was the error?
editCould you clarify, what error did you see? [2] -DePiep (talk) 19:56, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- I left a clue in my initial edit summary:
Attempt to prevent cat name from appearing in plain text, e.g. at Discovery and development of gastrointestinal lipase inhibitors
. The first edit didn't actually solve the problem, but the second one did. A space was needed after the category sorting pipe. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:14, 5 July 2020 (UTC)- Yes, that is why I came here. I could not reproduce old (faulty) situations. Translation template cleanup
editAny thoughts on Wikipedia:Bot_requests#Clean_up_translation_template_quotemarks, in the end, from a month ago? I didn't develop the template any further, but there may be an easy fix I'm unaware of. (And a bad template may be better than the current approach of putting apostrophes around absolutely everything, including strings which are already wrapped in apostrophes or quotemarks.) --Lord Belbury (talk) 11:56, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
- Been a few months now and the thread has been archived with no further input (Wikipedia:Bot_requests/Archive_80#Clean_up_translation_template_quotemarks). Any thoughts, or suggestions for a more relevant page to flag this up? Or does it seem fine to leave the live templates adding extra apostrophes everywhere? --Lord Belbury (talk) 12:15, 7 July 2020 (UTC)

Help with signature
editHello. Recently, a editor sent a notice in my talk page in other wiki that my signature was at odds with the rules. I used this tool and there it indicated that the signature was all clear. The Wikipedia:Signatures cite images, it says nothing about using an emoji, which is not classified as an image, but as a unicode character. Could you tell me if you think my signature is WP: SIGIMAGE or if it complies with Wikipedia: Signatures? I confess that I am asking more ADMs, both on ptwiki and enwiki, since I want to be sure about the use of my signature. I will be grateful if I can answer my question. Best regards. ✍A.WagnerC (talk) 21:24, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
- The signature looks OK to me, and the checking tool says that it is fine, so I would not worry about it if I were you. It definitely does not have any Linter errors in it; I don't know as much about other requirements. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:02, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the answer. I like to ask more than one for security. ✍A.WagnerC (talk) 22:18, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
- Doing that is not recommended at the English Wikipedia. See WP:TALKFORK. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:24, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
- If the signature has a link beginning with either
[[File:
or[[Image:
then it contains an image. I see neither of those in A.WagnerC's signature as used in this edit; therefore, it does not contain an image. - On a less positive note, A.WagnerC - you posted basically the same question at User talk:Jimbo Wales#Signature question and User talk:Redrose64#Signature question. In none of these three posts did you mention either (i) that you had asked the question two days earlier at User talk:Whatamidoing (WMF)#Help with signatures (which is where I first became aware of your problem), or (ii) that Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk · contribs) had already answered it. This could be construed as being against WP:MULTI and WP:FORUMSHOP. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:26, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

@Redrose64: Sorry. I asked because in ptwiki they said that was an image and I could use. I also asked to 3 adms in ptwiki. As the answers were different there, I was confused. but I promise not to ask multiple administrators again. I didn't know MULTI. ✍A.WagnerC (talk) 23:22, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker)@A.WagnerC:, your current sig is acceptable on English Wikipedia (like mine: see WP:Signatures). The Portuguese Wikipedia may have different rules so it would be best to consult the guidelines there. If you want to be certain, just remove the ✍ symbol. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 05:20, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Baffle gab1978: Thanks. I opened an appointment in ptwiki, and it is really controversial. Some editors agree others do not. But it seems that here on enwiki there is consensus. ✍A.WagnerC (talk) 05:42, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks but I don't want to get involved and I'm not interested in what happens over there. English Wikipedia and Portuguese Wikipedia clearly have different rules; you should respect the rules of the wiki you are working in. It's possible to use a different sig for each wiki, and imo it would be silly to get blocked over such a minor issue as a sig. Now please go and improve some articles; isn't that why you're here? ;) Bye, Baffle☿gab 06:19, 7 July 2020 (UTC)

- @A.WagnerC: Presumably you mean Érico, He7d3r and Fabiojrsouza (please note, I can't read Portuguese). Each Wikipedia (whether English, Portuguese or another) is a separate project, and each is free to decide upon its own rules (provided that they abide by the terms laid down by the WMF). This means that the policies, guidelines and other conventions of one Wikipedia do not necessarily apply on any other Wikipedia. Our policy on custom signatures is at WP:CUSTOMSIG; that of ptwiki is at pt:WP:ASSINE#Personalizar a assinatura. I have not compared them. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 16:46, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
Orangutan

Your change to the short description is definitely an improvement, but I'd suggest that "intimidatory cricket bowling tactic" would be even better. It wasn't illegal at the time it was used, though many thought it was unsporting, and it's really more of a tactic than a technique. I'd alter it myself, but I've no idea about how to do so. Help needed on a technical issue
editFirstly, sorry about leaving out all those closing tags, "linter errors".
Please take a look at Template:CardinalsFirstPick, specifically the footer. My changes are somehow coloring the text. I'm guessing I did something wrong but don't know how to fix it. I don't suppose it needs to be fixed at the footer template? --DB1729 (talk) 02:46, 29 July 2020 (UTC)
- If you remove the
|basestyle=
that you added, the footer will go back to normal. I don't know if that's what you want, but that is what is causing the footer colors, I believe. – Jonesey95 (talk) 03:19, 29 July 2020 (UTC)- You are correct, that's what causing it. But removing the basestyle also takes away the background color and from the
|above=
text. And directly coloring the text without the background looks even worse, unfortunately. - When I do something like this with code I'm not familiar with, I usually find something else that's close, fiddle around with it until I get what I want, and move on. Sometimes only to later discover it isn't exactly what I want. (also better known as, not knowing what in the hell I'm doing) --DB1729 (talk) 03:41, 29 July 2020 (UTC)
- To clarify. By background "color", I mean it actually turns it white in this case. Without it, the default is the bluish-gray background. See here for how it looks without the basestyle and directly coloring the sub-bar text. Not good. --DB1729 (talk) 04:01, 29 July 2020 (UTC)

editThis ain't necessarily so and is a good example of why we should not be using Wikidata here. If you read the article, it becomes apparent that he may well have been Scots. - Sitush (talk) 03:58, 29 July 2020 (UTC)
- I always check the wikidata description against the summary in the lead, which said "English" and that he was born in London. That was good enough for me. I agree that we should not use wikidata for unsourced statements, which is one reason why I am importing them; page watchers who care about the short description can keep an eye on it when it is in the article. – Jonesey95 (talk) 06:24, 29 July 2020 (UTC)
- Actually, I think it says "English-born". I agree it is confusing and perhaps I will change it to "born in England". I don't understand the logic of importing the descriptions - it isn't as if I am ever going to edit Wikidata to fix the problem, the interface of which is even more arcane than that for this project. To be honest, I'm not even sure what benefit short descriptions have in any event and they're an absolute minefield for POV/nationalism/casteism in Indian/Pakistani articles, often so subtle that they seem to be missed. - Sitush (talk) 11:19, 29 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi Jonsesy; I noticed this article popped back up into the c/e backlog and I noticed you'd already reverted the changes by Kalevipoiss. Some more changes were made to add two ref urls (I didn't check them) and some text, some of which seems a bit pointy. The reversions were unexplained and I think the edits should have been made to the current version, not a reverted version. I've re-reverted to your version but feel free to re-revert if that's inappropriate. Could it be a loose sockpuppet? Cheers, Baffle☿gab 14:23, 31 July 2020 (UTC)

editHi there.
I'm curious. Is there a policy reason why you changed italics to blockquote in the article? And was that the only change you made?
I was using italics so that any editorial comments would be easier to see. I'm not saying what you did was wrong, just a little harder to follow. G. Timothy Walton (talk) 18:46, 1 August 2020 (UTC)

Can't say I "broke" formatting
editCan't say I "broke" formatting. in fact, for some reason, "whataboutism" features 2-3 claims to different people in one paragraph and I only partially separated it into "one claim at a time" style because it's big. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Uchyotka (talk • contribs) 14:54, 25 August 2020 (UTC)
- This version of Whataboutism had nine misnested tag errors and a lot of misapplied bold formatting. Also, we don't use bullets like that. We use prose in article sections. See MOS:LISTBULLET and MOS:BOLD, for starters. Try making smaller edits and using the Preview feature to ensure that you are getting the results that you want. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:07, 25 August 2020 (UTC)

Block Quotes in the Island House, Laugharne article
editHi, Thank you for your edits on the above, the consistently excellent quality of debate on this topic and many others continues to astonish me as a novice contributor. As such I bring with me prejudices and habits about written communication acquired over a lifetime but essentially they rely for their influence on the imprint of my school days. Any departure from the principles nailed into my brain during my grammar lessons so many decades ago, causes me distress. Sadly the Wiki guidance on presenting block quotations without quotation marks is one such painful experience. I do understand the need for a community approach to punctuation rules but sadly the complete abandonment of quotation marks is a bridge too far for me. I have now removed the second quotation from Stopp and rewritten the section but the earlier Mary Curtis edit has me impaled on the horns of an intractable dilemma. Its preceding sentence was (rather poorly) constructed to rely on an inline quotation for its sense and detaching that quotation in indented block form simply empties the passage of the intended meaning. With great trepidation I've rewritten it and restored the original format in the hope you will allow me this editorial discretion on the grounds that the quote isn't really that long. Maybe I can be permitted to follow the '6-8 line/ 100 word' direction from CMOS as cited in Block Quotation Your forebearance and indulgence in this matter would be very gratefully received. Horatius At The Bridge (talk) 19:52, 2 September 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note, and welcome to Wikipedia. We have our own Manual of Style (MOS) here that may take some getting used to. It looks like you have undone some of the fixes that I put into the article (removing spaces before the sfn templates, for example) to help the article comply better with MOS. Useful sections of the MOS that I have just applied, or reapplied, to the article include MOS:DASH, MOS:REFPUNCT, MOS:DATERANGE, WP:MOS#Circa, MOS:INITIALS, MOS:ITALQUOTE, and MOS:DOUBLE. I have also restored some {{full citation needed}} templates where there are short references (e.g. Curtis 1880) without matching full references. To see that they are missing, click on one and see that it does not take you to the full citation. Happy editing! – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:53, 2 September 2020 (UTC)

When you have a moment
editHello J. The time period for this RFC Template talk:Infobox person#Home town field has expired. I wonder if you can proceed with removing the field from the 23 different infoboxes where it is used. If you would prefer that I post an edit request on the talk page for the infobox no worries just let me know. Also if you think that there should be separate RFC's on the other 22 infoboxes that is okay as well. Thanks for your time and best regards. MarnetteD|Talk 22:48, 7 September 2020 (UTC)
- This situation is unclear to me. I do not see an RFC header or an RFC closure at that page. I do not see that the discussion was advertised at pages like Template talk:Infobox writer, which is not a wrapper for Infobox person, so I don't feel comfortable applying the results of a discussion at an unrelated template. I recommend setting this discussion up as a real RFC, advertising it on all of the pages that you want to affect, and getting a real consensus. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:00, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
- Hi again. I started the thread as a discussion. A couple responses mentioned running it as a full RFC so I did that on the Aug 7 though I initially put the box in the wrong place. The last response was on Aug 25th and then the RFC template was removed on Sept 6. As I read it the WP:CONSENSUS is clear but, perhaps I made such a hash at the start (as I mentioned in the edit summary hadn't started one in ages) that it needs to be rerun. I get what you are saying about the other pages and can handle those separately. Apologies for all the confusion. If you can give me an idea what to do next it will be appreciated. - You improved the article quite a bit, and added some errors ("relaxed, Dimensional"; "interlooping" was correct; "Fibers to fabric conversion imply" is wrong; "brand can lose its reputation" should not have been changed). Try reading the article aloud to find additional errors, including ones that you have introduced. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:17, 8 September 2020 (UTC)

- This is not grammatical: "Shrinkage (in fabric), aka dimensional stability, is the change of fabric dimensions when washed". Using "etc." is not recommended in normal prose, and you neglected to insert a space after the full stop after "etc". You are missing a full stop after the word "journey".
- I did not look for errors past the first three sentences, in which I quickly found three errors. I recommend reverting your edits and letting someone else try improving the article. Unfortunately, I think that copy editing may not be your strength, and that you may want to look for a way to improve Wikipedia that does not involve modifying prose. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:13, 9 September 2020 (UTC)

- Done. It needs a sentence or two early in the article explaining why the town was created in the first place. It becomes obvious after a while, but it should be mentioned sooner. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:42, 2 April 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks, Jonesey! You have a gift. I really love having you copy edit my prose. DrGregMN (talk) 21:53, 2 April 2020 (UTC)
- That's nice of you to say. As I recently told a friend of mine whose novel I copy-edited, it's actually a curse rather than a gift. It makes it hard to read just about anything, because the grammar and usage errors pop out at me! I typically find a copy-editing error every 10 to 50 pages in popular mass market fiction books that have gone through multiple printings. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:51, 2 April 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Jonesey. Manganese, Minnesota has been through peer review and I put it up for GA nomination. The article has been expanded with additional text since you last looked at it. Could I ask you for another peek? Thanks in advance! DrGregMN (talk) 05:08, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

- Hello, Jonesey95. Could I please ask that you add this page to your watch list? I have made many revisions at the request of peer review as I have submitted this article for GA nomination. However, I will not be submitting it for FA consideration until the Minnesota Historical Society reopens after the COVID-19 pandemic since it will still need specific page citations from historical news articles. - I have had the page on my watchlist, and I haven't seen anything I objected to. I think I dropped in for an edit or two. If reviewers have specific problems with the copy, ping me from the review page and I will take a look. – Jonesey95 (talk) 03:38, 8 August 2020 (UTC)
- OK, I couldn't resist. I gave it a quick copy editing pass. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:08, 9 August 2020 (UTC)
- Page has been through GA review. I have addressed the reviewers criticisms and am awaiting a final determination. Please feel free to check prose. There are other references I wish to add before submitting for FAC, but need to wait until they can be sourced (the Minnesota Historical Society is still closed due to the COVID pandemic). editHi! Wanted to check in about this decline. I'm not actually questioning it, but wondered if you knew the history. The article (main space and current draft) appears to be some original research around the topic that they want to add to Wikipedia. Whether or not it's a G12, the material doesn't seem appropriate IMO. Disclosure, I was original AfD nom as well. Thanks and courtesy @Dan arndt:. StarM 17:48, 16 September 2020 (UTC)
- I saw the AfD, and I looked at the history of the article and of the academia page. WP:BACKWARDSCOPY can be tricky to figure out, so the speedy nomination was understandable. If you think that the current page should be deleted from Wikipedia because it is original research, I think there is a process for that. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:04, 16 September 2020 (UTC)
- I think it will end up back at AfD if it's accepted into mainspace, but possible others will have different takes on it as you did here. StarM 18:59, 16 September 2020 (UTC)
- I don't have a "take" on it. All I did was remove an inappropriately applied speedy deletion template. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:44, 16 September 2020 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) I noticed the off-wiki page claims the text was copied from a 2010 blog post and posted without permission as a WP article in July 2011. I can't confirm the reliability of this claim and I've no intention of searching for the claimed original. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 20:10, 16 September 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks @Baffle gab1978:. That seems to give some credence to the G12. It's a complicated mess that like you I'm not particularly interested in handling unless it goes into main space. StarM 01:17, 17 September 2020 (UTC)
- I admit that I only undertook a cursory assessment - the copyvios report came out as 97.7% copied from external sources, namely Defining Film. I note that that source states "This text of this article was previously available on my community blog in 2010 and was subsequently posted as a Wikipedia article. (18 July 2011)". The question then arises is Filmpartscom the same as the source article's creator, Dr. I. D. McCormick, and as such is it actually original research? I guess I will leave that up to others to make that call. Dan arndt (talk) 02:21, 17 September 2020 (UTC)

Image PRODs
editApologies if I've been incorrectly tagging things, but at what point is something not functionally in use? One of the two images, for instance, is a logo created for a user's page, and said user has not been active for 10 years. Does it being put on a user page mean it stays around forever? It has no encyclopedic use anywhere else, and therefore shouldn't be moved to Commons. Is it just going to sit forever just because somebody decided almost 15 years ago that they wanted it there?
I'm not trying to be argumentative, I really just want to know the best way to handle it, because leaving them tagged to move to Commons forever isn't a solution. --fuzzy510 (talk) 01:37, 17 September 2020 (UTC)
- I don't know much about File space, but I presume there is a way to tag files to say "this was tagged as a potential move to Commons, but it should stay here on en.WP". If not, a way to do that should be created. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:57, 17 September 2020 (UTC)
- Fuzzy510: I found it! {{Esoteric file}} is for files that are Wikipedia-specific. That is the template for a logo that exists on one user's page. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:29, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
Guild of Copy Editors September 2020 Newsletter
editGuild of Copy Editors September 2020 Newsletter
Hello and welcome to the September GOCE newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since June 2020. Current and upcoming events
September Drive: Our current backlog-elimination drive is open until 23:59 on 30 September (UTC) and is open to all copy editors. Sign up today! Election reminder: our end-of-year Election of Coordinators opens for nominations on 1 December. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here. Drive and Blitz reports
June Blitz: An uncorrected typo (even copy editors make copy editing mistakes!) led to an eight-day "leap blitz" from 14 to 21 June, focusing on requests and articles tagged in May. 19 participating editors claimed 54 copy edits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. July Drive: Over 750,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event, keeping pace with the previous three self-isolated drives. Of the 38 people who signed up, 30 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here. August Blitz: From 16 to 22 August, we copy edited articles tagged in June and July 2020 and requests. 12 participating editors completed 37 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Other news
June election: Jonesey95 was chosen to continue as lead coordinator, assisted by Baffle gab1978, Tdslk, Twofingered Typist, and first-time coordinator Puddleglum2.0. Reidgreg took a break after serving for a couple years. Thanks to everyone who participated! Progress report: As of 01:33, 18 September 2020 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors had processed 532 requests since 1 January and there were 38 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog of articles tagged for copy-editing stood at 433 (see monthly progress graph above). Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, Puddleglum2.0, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist. To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list.

Draft:Steven Umbrello
editJonesey95, given your experience, and after reviewing your work, I would appreciate some help editing two bio pages that I made (Still new at this).
Do you think you can make some edits to polish these up or at least give me some feedback as to what I can do to make them better? EthicsScholar93 (talk) 14:39, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
- Umbrello: The overall format is pretty good. Use the person's last name instead of his first name, per MOS:SURNAME. I haven't checked the sources in detail, but I can't tell if this person meets the general notability guidelines. If he does, the article should make that more clear.
- Friedman: does not appear to meet WP:NACADEMIC or WP:GNG notability standards, so the article might be nominated for deletion. Format looks OK but could be tidied up: please see MOS:CURLY and MOS:SECTIONCAPS for guidance. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:09, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
- amazing, thank you so much for the feedback. The lighter edits I have made accoring to your suggestions. The more substantive stuff will take a bit of time to tidy up! EthicsScholar93 (talk) 19:03, 4 October 2020 (UTC)

Could you shift JFCNP Allied Joint Force Command Naples and Joint Force Command Norfolk under JFCBS Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum? This the the proper arrangement see https://shape.nato.int/military_command_structure JFCBS, JFCNP and JFC-NP are operational-level commands while AIRCOM, MARCOM and LANDCOM are tactical level commands. I don't want to mess up the chart. Thank you!!!

Seoul School of Integrated Sciences and Technologies
editI am trying to create a new wiki page for our University (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seoul_School_of_Integrated_Sciences_and_Technologies). This is my first time trying to work in Wikipedia and I am using this page as a model: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheung_Kong_Graduate_School_of_Business. Yet, every time I try to improve the page and address the problems, you delete everything. You don't even leave the photos, logo or school info. Why can't you just delete what you think is not appropriate instead of all the content? Can you give some advise about how to fix the content so that is appropriate and you stop deleting it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ParosePhD (talk • contribs) 03:35, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- Please see WP:V, Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Layout, MOS:YOU, WP:NOTPROMO, and WP:COPYVIO. Those should provide some good advice for you. Content that is added needs to be sourced with references to reliable sources, formatted correctly (look at the wikicode for Cheung_Kong_Graduate_School_of_Business to see examples), and non-promotional. If the university is your employer, you also must read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest before making any edits to the university's page.
- Thanks for asking, and please respond here if you have further questions. Remember to sign your talk page posts by adding four tildes, like this: ~~~~ – Jonesey95 (talk) 03:46, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

{{lead too short}} revert
editHi,
Just a ping to say I reverted the recent editprotected request you made to {{lead too short}}. Barely twelve hours of discussion (between only you and the requesting party, with no notifications elsewhere) is nowhere near enough to justify a significant reduction in the template's wording, and the requestee's further comments on talk are wildly out of line with the existing consensus on the template. Apologies for stepping on your toes. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 02:05, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
- Thumperward: Thanks for the note. My toes are fine; I don't take things personally on WP as long as editors engage in good faith. I disagree that the new wording, which you have reverted, represented a reduction in the template's message, since most of the reduction in word count came from removal of a redundant sentence. I think that the new wording actually added more words that explained the template's reason for existence more fully. In any event, let's not banter here; please propose new text that matches the name of the template on the template's talk page. I will be happy to engage there.
- As for the requester's original suggestion and their other suggestions, you can see if you read that talk page that I disagreed with most of it, so you and I are probably more aligned than in opposition. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:50, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
- Yeah I think that too: I just didn't want to offend you. Cheers. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 09:25, 20 October 2020 (UTC)

editHi @Jonesey95: The form for posting these types of tags is usually to wait until their has been no editing for a fews days or a week or so, not while they are away getting a cup of tea, dude. It just creates more work. I always references articles. I'm autopatrolled. So if you see me editing an article then you know it will be referenced, so please don't post these useless tags. scope_creepTalk 15:29, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
- If the article had been in Draft space, I would not have tagged it. If you choose to create an article and put it in article space before it is fully cleaned up and referenced, you are essentially inviting any other editor to edit and tag it.
- Any page in article space, i.e. in the live encyclopedia that the whole world can see and that is supposed to meet WP:V, with unreferenced sections or stray numbers littering the prose is unprofessional and should be tagged as such. And now I'm off for my own cup of tea; thanks for the idea. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:02, 20 October 2020 (UTC)

- Post a neutral note at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Film/Indian cinema task force. A "neutral note" means something like "There is a deletion discussion about Hanumanthegowda at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hanumanthegowda. Interested editors are encouraged to participate." A non-neutral note would be something like "Hey guys, can you please go over to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hanumanthegowda and vote to keep the article?" – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:14, 21 October 2020 (UTC)

Edit conflicts
editHello Jonesey95, thank you for reviewing my edit. I think it is important to distinguish between an edit conflict and conflicts that are substantial and need to be sorted out between minds of good intent. - I asked you to discuss your proposed change on the talk page, Help talk:Edit conflict. Click on the "New section" link there and propose a specific change. Changing the concise summary of a long-standing page is probably not optimal. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:20, 28 October 2020 (UTC)

Rollover Number
editHello:
Sorry for the error on the rollover total. I have no idea how these numbers work. I had a rollover number for September's drive of 1405660.5 which ended up as 17992.5 for the forthcoming drive. I assumed there was a typo. Thanks for catching my mistake.
Cheers,
Twofingered Typist (talk) 13:34, 30 October 2020 (UTC)
- The mystery deepens! I was trusting the "0" in the previous rollover count, but of course that was wrong. I went back to the July drive Barnstars page and found the correct number. I think it's all fixed up now. We're going to have to make a new barnstar for you if you hit two million words; we should have done it at a million. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:12, 30 October 2020 (UTC)

ANNO
editI just noticed your changes at {{ANNO}}
. Are you going to monitor the tracking category? Did you notice the doc page says "If papers are missing please report this at the discussion page; they can then be quickly added." But since the linked talk page doesn't exist on en.wp, I didn't believe reporting it there would result in a quick fix. :) It will probably be years before this happens again. Thanks for adding the missing periodical. MB 20:14, 11 November 2020 (UTC)
- There is not a convenient way to watchlist a single category page for changes to its contents, but I put a note on that page saying to post on the talk page (which I just created). Speedy deletion nomination of Category:UK stations with missing location
editA tag has been placed on Category:UK stations with missing location requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. But when I translated it to enwiki, it looks too messy like my grammar. :( Can you please help me by copyediting the article. It also needs to be reviewed. Thank you once again. font size
editHello, saw you changed a font size for a catalog number. I often see a smaller font for catalog numbers (especially with jazz albums), so was wondering if there is an actual consensus in regard to this specific example. Of course, per a recent discussion on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Albums, catalog numbers themselves have been up for debate. Thanks. Caro7200 (talk) 15:10, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
- I expect that I explained the reason for my edit in the edit summary. In any event, always link to a diff, or at least to an article, when you have a question about a particular edit that someone has made. I have edited over 100,000 different articles, so there is no chance that I will recall the edit that you are describing. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:42, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
- I see, and of course you have edited these 100,000 articles within the past 24 hours... Take care. Caro7200 (talk) 21:02, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
- ??? You came to me with a question. If you want an answer, I have explained how to help me provide one. I can't read minds or otherwise inhabit your consciousness. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:49, 18 November 2020 (UTC)

on math
editRegarding math, 1. I anticipate someone reverting you. 2. However, even should that occur, the actual correct solution to indenting with colons is to change <math> to <math display="block">. 3. I vaguely recall a somewhat contentious discussion in the talk archived on the point in fairly recent memory.
Just letting you know. --Izno (talk) 19:45, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note. I don't know why I would be reverted for recommending a seamless (as far as I can tell) change that improves HTML validity and accessibility. As for display="block", I tried that (see the last section), and it has problems when there is additional content following the math formula, like a reference. Wrapping the whole line in a div looks like the best way to maintain the desired formatting. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:51, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
- But is objectionable for worse reasons to the same people who rejected a fix to affected guidelines pages prior. I assert content should generally not follow a formula in the same way we do not generally follow blockquotes with content (or at least references, since those are not part of the quotations in such cases. --Izno (talk) 20:16, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
- Your solution also does not play so nicely with VE which can't deal with the math inside a template natively, but can in either the prior form or the display form. --Izno (talk) 20:19, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
- References can go inline inside of block content if it makes sense for them to be there. See Template:Quote#Reference citations for just one example of recommended and semantically valid usage that is common throughout en.WP.
As for a recommendation that improves accessibility and semantic validity but is incompatible due to a bug in, or inadequate programming of, the beta Visual Editor, that's how it goes with beta software; there are plenty of higher-priority VE bugs in phabricator that have gone unfixed for years. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:26, 22 November 2020 (UTC)

Quick note
editHi Jonesey, hope all is well. I just wanted to mention (regarding the Infobox Christian leader discussion) that in my experience, I've generally found it good practice to avoid completing an edit request that another admin or template editor is already involved in responding to. It avoids confusion. Just a helpful tip I've gleaned. Cheers, Ergo Sum 18:23, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note. FWIW, I have found it helpful to mark template edit requests as "answered=yes" if a consensus has not yet been reached. That way, TPEs and admins who have User:AnomieBOT/TPERTable on their watchlists won't be made aware of the edit request before it is ready for action.
- The conversation looked like it had reached consensus, and the edit request was marked as unanswered (which is supposed to happen only if there is consensus or a non-controversial request), so I implemented it after testing it in the sandbox (the sandbox had not been edited, so I figured that no template editors were involved in the conversation yet; checking the user rights of all of the conversation participants is beyond what I am willing to do for an easy request). It was no big deal to undo the edit, and I certainly don't take any of it personally. Happy editing! – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:33, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for fixing the various templates that included
:::::This template should only be used on image pages.
There are related markup issues. User talk:Mifter/Archive Undated includes the markup {{self|cc-by-sa-4.0|GFDL|migration=not eligible}}
, which has a Multiline table in list lint error coming from the markup
:::::This template should only be used on file pages.
You can find templates with this markup using insource search for ":::::This template should only be used on file pages.". The first such template I looked at is {{Cc-by-2.0}}
, which is protected, so I can't edit it. So, I'm messaging you. It would be slightly more grammatical to say, "This template should be used only on file pages." I would move "only" in the "image pages" templates also. And looking beyond these two group of templates, I note that the search can be expanded to
- insource search for ":::::This template should only be used on", with over 100 hits. Some of these templates may be triggering Multiline table in list lint errors. —Anomalocaris (talk) 00:37, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
- I'll take a look. This may take a bit of time. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:05, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

- There are many articles on Wikipedia about things that no longer exist. It is not a problem. The article that mentions the Socialist Faction of Komala has a cited source that explains the formation of that faction on page 23. If you can find a reliable source that says that the faction no longer exists, please add it to that article and change the word "present" in the template to the correct end date. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:50, 15 December 2020 (UTC)

Tech News
- Because of the holidays the next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 11 January 2021.
Recent changes
- The
{{citation needed}}
template shows when a statement in a Wikipedia article needs a source. If you click on it when you edit with the visual editor there is a popup that explains this. Now it can also show the reason and when it was added. [6]
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week or next week.
Future changes
- You can propose and discuss what technical improvements should be done for geographic information. This could be coordinates, maps or other related things.
- Some wikis use LanguageConverter to switch between writing systems or variants of a language. This can only be done for the entire page. There will be a
<langconvert>
tag that can convert a piece of text on a page. [7] - Oversighters and stewards can hide entries in Special:AbuseLog. They can soon hide multiple entries at once using checkboxes. This works like hiding normal edits. It will happen in early January. [8]

Blocking afds
editHi, is there really no way to auto revert anybody posting Article for Deletion and prod warnings from my talk page? I want something to block them, I'm sick of logging in and seeing them.† Encyclopædius 08:40, 24 December 2020 (UTC)
- I'm not sure why you're asking me. It looks like you created a bunch of articles that are barely sourced and uploaded files that are no longer used, and it is polite to notify creators when their creations are nominated. You could clean them up yourself, I guess. I don't know how to suppress the messages; a month or three ago, I received (what, in my memory, seems like) a few dozen semi-automated category deletion messages when a large set of categories that I had created (that were needed at the time) were renamed as part of a large template/category improvement project. That's just how it goes. I just let them post to my talk page, and then deleted them in a batch or reverted or archived them. No big deal. I knew that it wasn't personal. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:26, 24 December 2020 (UTC)
