Overview edit

The project coordinators are responsible for maintaining the procedural and administrative aspects of the project. They are the designated points of contact for procedural issues and are responsible for ensuring the project as a whole is properly informed of them.

Here are some examples of coordinator duties: the coordinators manage the proposal and creation of new task forces; ensure project announcements and task lists are kept up-to-date; initiate drafting of guidelines needed by the project; organize the category system; oversee the recruitment of new members, including the use of project notices and other advertising methods; create and maintain any collaborative projects; maintain the project page and the various guidelines on it in a clean and easy-to-use state; monitor technical policies and ensure project templates satisfy them; and assist in organizing and promoting any Backlog Elimination Drives and Blitzes.

They are also expected to generally assist project members with any questions or concerns.

The coordinator positions do not confer any executive power.

Positions edit

  • Lead Coordinator (one open position): will have overall responsibility for procedural and administrative matters within the project.
  • Coordinator (2–4 open positions): will assist the Lead Coordinator by focusing on specific areas within the project that require special attention. These areas will be selected based on need and interest among the coordinators.

Election process edit

  • The nomination process ran for two weeks from December 01, 00:01 UTC until December 15, 23:59 UTC.
  • The election process will run for two weeks from December 16, 00:01 UTC until December 31, 23:59 UTC.
  • Any member of the project may nominate themselves for either position by creating a new section under Nominations below and copying the sample form below. Nominees only interested in one position should indicate this when adding their names. Candidates need not make extensive statements if they do not wish to do so.
  • The elections will be conducted using simple approval voting. Any member of the project may support a nominee for either position. If the nominee is running for both positions and you wish to support them for only one, please make a note to that effect as part of your vote.
  • Both project members and interested outside parties are encouraged to ask questions of the nominees or to make general comments.

I have been a member of the Guild since 2010 and a coordinator since 2016. I enjoy the low drama and high productivity of this corner of Wikipedia and will do my best to see that continue. In addition, I note that this coming May will mark ten years since our very first drive. It would be great if we were to celebrate that fact as part of the May drive!

The introduction of the YiFeiBot to archive articles (for which you and the developer deserve a huge "Thank you") leaves me with no area at present that needs improving. My biggest takeaway, recognizing that we all make mistakes, is that as coordinators we must be prepared to spend time to mentor newer editors when we discover that their work on GOCE Requests is unsatisfactory. Puddleglum2.0 edit

I have only recently actually added my username to the project member list, but I have been watching this Project even before I had an account (I made hundreds of edits with my IP to various military related articles, mostly cleaning up grammar and typos.) One of my favourite pastimes and jobs in real life is coordinating events, and I love really getting things done. This position seems like it would be a good fit, as I like 1) helping new editors, 2) being civil, and 3) being productive. I have read and understand all of the coordinator requirements. If elected coordinator, I will do my best to maintain and ensure a productive, civil, and welcoming environment for this fantastic project. Thanks.

A: Right now I think my best edits are reverting vandalism and fixing up grammar and spelling mistakes. This is an area where few readers are going to notice contributions like mine because they take them for granted, but someone needs to be doing he behind-the-scenes work. My three specific best contributions so far have been helping three former vandal-users learn how to edit helpfully. Now those users are contributing constructively to Wikipedia. A: Yes, thanks for the question. I am a rather new editor persay, but I have been on Wikipedia with my IP since early 2019, if that counts. :) As an IP I did a lot of grammar corrections and typo fixes, but mainly I just read up on a lot of policies and looked around at projects. I didn't become a registered editor at the time because of all the controversial stuff going on then. I have watched many copy-editing Blitzes and Drives happen while watching this Project, so even though I have not actually participated in one (I have signed up for the upcoming December event though!), I am familiar with how they work. Mainly I would like to be working on setting up and coordinating those events, although I am familiar with and know how to do all the rest of the coordinators jobs. I realize this nomination may be a bit early and am definitely willing to wait until some future election, but I do already know how to do the job and would like to get involved helping as much as I can. I believe that overall, with a little practice, I can do everything that is expected of a coordinator, and because I am willing and eager to do that sort of work, I am running now. Thank you for your answer, Puddleglum 2.0, I'm glad to read you've done some homework before your nomination. It took me a fair while to familiarise myself with the way drives and blitzes work, especially updating the stats. Depending on your answer, I was going to ask you an awkward question about Guild operations but I don't now think that would be helpful. Rather, I'll just reiterate that I appreciate your enthusiasm and willingness to learn but I like candidates to have had at least a few months of demonstrable experience of the GOCE, such as copy-editing, gnoming, communicating on talk pages, etc. That's all from me; good luck with your candidacy. '5' I don't know if anyone will see this in time, but I wanted to write this, so here we go. As it is near the end of this election, and as I only have two support votes as compared to the average eight, I am willing and ready to switch places with Miniapolis and withdraw. I feel that bit is better for the Project as a whole that there are coordinators that have the popular vote and respect of the majority, not of two people. (Although I do greatly appreciate those two votes.) If the deadline comes up and no one has commented on this and talked, I will not withdraw and I will do my best to do good work as coordinator. I am still willing to be and would like to be a coordinator, however it would be better to have an experienced coordinator step up who is already familiar with everything. Although I'm very disappointed with the relative lack of support (what is this, a mini-RfA?) from editors who might welcome more help in the future, I understand completely whatever you want to do and hope this doesn't sour you on the GOCE; we used to be less clannish. I think the truth is that being a coordinator does not come with any great privileges. Anyone can help out around the Guild, e.g., by updating the daily progress chart during drives. Having coordinators simply means that there is a group who is committed to doing the routine gnomework that keeps the Guild running. As such, I think people would like to see evidence of more sustained participation at the Guild from a potential coordinator. I first came here to learn encyclopedic writing style, and I like to pass that along as well as performing maintenance and cleanup, running with tasks that others had initiated. Thanks for the question. The biggest takeaway is that the GOCE works best when we focus on our work, assume good faith, avoid drama, and contain our project scope. The coordinators have been very good at all of that in the last few years, and our efforts have borne fruit in the success of the project.
My personal accomplishments in the day-to-day, month-to-month realm have included ensuring that every drive and blitz actually happens and starts/ends on time, and ensuring that the coordinators' task list is checked off consistently. My technical accomplishments that ensure consistent, easy blitz and drive coordination have included work on refined "2.0" versions of {{GOCE-new-blitz-page}} and {{GOCE-new-drive-page}}, building on the work of Baffle gab1978, that make it easy to create new drive and blitz pages. My personal favorite creation, because it saves so much tedious work in an elegant way, is {{GOCE award}}. – Jonesey95 (talk) 06:42, 9 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks as always to my fellow coordinators for their help and support; and for Reidgreg for being a fine leader. I'm happy to wear the juice serve for another term if you'll have me; though I've no wish to lead—I'm better on the shop floor than in the office. For those who don't know me, I'm an active REQ copy-editor and current coordinator at the Guild. My main focus has been the ever-busy Requests page, checking requests for suitability, discussing where necessary and doing other small tasks in Guildspace such as setting up Drive and Blitz pages. I've also helped write newsletters and annual reports, and I plan to continue with all of these tasks for the foreseeable future. On the downside, I don't suffer fools gladly and can be a bit impatient and bitey towards inexperienced editors, though I think I'm improving in that area. Hi BlueMoonset, thanks for your support and question. Yes, my RL activity usually picks up around March, when I'm busier doing RL things that keep me away from Wikipedia, so I tend to be more active here in the northern winter. Even so, I'll usually spend two or three hours most days copy-editing and coordinating. I think it's fair to tell other editors and coordinators not to expect me to maintain my current high levels of activity until June.
