Sad loss edit

Someone who ventured into the realm - another highly competent, resourceful and productive editor of 13 years duration, who simply knew when it was time to go. A sad loss, and a very sadder loss for the Indonesian project here on wp en, very very sad when this happens. JarrahTree 02:03, 18 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Sorry to see this, but I know exactly how you feel. Your focus was on content, mine was on policies, guidelines, and article quality control. Sooner or later, whatever one does here, something happens to spoil it. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 03:20, 18 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

  • Xaos: do you seriously think five people I've known for five years (or more, in many cases) would all agree that I had asked for desysopping if my account had been compromised? Because of your unwillingness to handle a simple request, I've been forced to come back here. I wanted a clean break. Instead I am stuck with further proof that TRM is meddling in processes he has no idea about ("FIFO", "a bot could do it"... please, do handle the complaints when you have eight painting articles in a row, then nine different banknotes in the same series... and this after your "bot" puts together a one-sentence blurb that contains eight different titles for the same work) and have to waste more time on this site. It's a simple request: no mop for this account. If you can't handle that, I ask that you put yourself up for recall.  — Chris Woodrich (talk) 15:19, 20 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for D. Djajakusuma, "a director who never forgot the theatre, and ultimately returned to it and saved at least one traditional art form. Our article on Djajakusuma (again, as with my previous FACs, the most detailed on the subject in English) was mostly written in 2012. During my trip to Jakarta in December I found a copy of his biography, purchased it... and left it on my bookshelf for three months. I've finally worked it in, and now our article is ready for prime time."! - We miss you. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:51, 10 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Today, thank you for Pah Wongso Pendekar Boediman, introduced: "Pah Wongso was a bit of an oddball, in many ways rather similar to myself. Although of ethnic European (Dutch, rather) heritage, he was very close with the indigenous and ethnic Chinese communities in the Indies and later Indonesia, and married an ethnic Chinese woman. His work promoting education for poor youth and raising funds to help war-torn China in 1938 led him to have great popularity within the Chinese diaspora community, and as such the Chinese-owned Star Film produced two films starring him. This article is about the first of these, Pah Wongso Pendekar Boediman, and features (among other things) perhaps the most detailed plot synopsis of the film published since the 1940s. I hope you enjoy reviewing it as much as I enjoyed writing it." - I miss the joy of your writing, and its education. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:23, 13 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Minggu Pagi (Indonesian for Sunday Morning) is a general interest weekly published by the Yogyakarta-based Kedaulatan Rakyat Group. The magazine was established on 7 December 1948 and switched to a tabloid-format newspaper in the 1980s.

This magazine cover, published 65 years ago today, features a photo of the actress Lies Noor. Born c. 1938, Noor was rapidly becoming a popular actress when this photo was published in 1954. During her career, she appeared in a number of films including Rajuan Alam (1956) and Pedjuang (1960). Noor died in 1961 of encephalitis at the age of 23.Uncredited. Restored by Chris Woodrich

Thank you today for Sorga Ka Toedjoe, "the first film which cast Roekiah and Djoemala together; their pairing lasted another three films. However, more interesting to me (and Wikipedians in general?) is that this article it the first which can provide a plot summary for the film, as cited to its novelisation; modern sources do not seem to have had access to novelisation, and they have not provided even the slightest plot summary. As such, even though this is fairly short (not as short as Gagak Item, but still only 6k characters) it is easily the most detailed look at this film now available."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:29, 30 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Adnan Kapau Gani edit

Hello Crisco, I would just want to ask about the sentence In 1954, while still involved in politics as minister of transportation in the First Ali Sastroamidjojo Cabinet, he became the rector of Sriwijaya University in Palembang in the Adnan Kapau Gani article. You cited this article, which states that [Adnan Kapau Gani] jadi Ketua Dewan Kurater Universitas Negeri di Palembang (sekarang Universitas Sriwijaya). Are you sure that he was the rector of the Sriwijaya University in 1954? Because the Sriwijaya University article states that the university was established in 1960. Regards, Jeromi Mikhael (marhata) 15:22, 30 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

  • Hi Jeromi Mikhael. You're right; it looks like I oversimplified it (I don't have the second reference, Perkembangan Kabinet dan Pemerintahan Indonesia, anymore, so I can't check to see if that's where that mistake came from). I'll correct now if you haven't already.  — Chris Woodrich (talk) 13:20, 6 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Pengkhianatan G30S/PKI edit

Hey. At the Pengkhianatan G30S/PKI page there's a bit of drama going on. Basically I cleaned up the lead without removing excess detail, however an editor decided to remove it on the grounds that if I wanna edit it, I must go to the FAR. I just stopped the edit war, but found out that (you can see in his contribs) he has called me incompetent in FA-making. What do you think about my edit— would like a third opinion here. GeraldWL 09:39, 8 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

There's a lot of bad faith in the above statement (you didn't stop the edit war, for example: you started it when you should have gone to the talk page. I have opened a thread on the talk page for you to discuss your edit. I have given a series of questions about your edit, asking just why you thought some of your changes were beneficial. I look forward to hearing from you there. I have not called you "incompetent" in anything, although I have expressed doubts you'd be able to write one (which is a very different thing). I have also not said that if you want to edit it you need to go to FAR. I have pointed to FAOWN which says big changes should be discussed on the talk page first. The context of FAR was a reply to your comment that the article "is not FA standard". It clearly is, but your edits made it a little less so. - 2A00:23C7:2B86:9800:89A0:C5A6:BF92:D084 (talk) 10:04, 8 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Palupi edit

Being fully aware that you are not exactly as active as you were, but I figured you are still the best source I can get on the site for this:

I came across the 1969 movie Apa Jang Kau Tjari, Palupi? while writing the Satyagraha Hoerip article. Apparently it won the 1970 Asian Film Festival, so I got curious and looked around - it seemed to have some contemporary coverage on snippet view, which didn't help in the sourcing department.

Do you have any advice or good spots to find sources? Juxlos (talk) 15:43, 18 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • Hi Juxlos. As I'm no longer living in Indonesia, I don't have ready access to any of the sources I had relied on. I seem to recall that Palupi has been identified as amongst Indonesia's best, but most of the sources I digitized before leaving the country deal with the 1950s and earlier. I have the contact information for the authors of a few of the articles identified in Google Scholar, and will ask them if they could spare a copy of the articles in question (and identify further sources that may be available online).  — Chris Woodrich (talk) 01:40, 19 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
That'd be great, thanks. One of the snippet views I spotted mention that it's a lost movie, so hopefully the authors could shine some lights. Juxlos (talk) 01:45, 19 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome. Glad to see Satyagraha Hoerip is getting some wiki-love. That's quite a few redlinks turning blue. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 01:50, 19 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
Have to rack up DYK scores for WikiCup somehow. Juxlos (talk) 02:54, 19 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
Juxlos, I got a few replies. Check your email. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 02:41, 19 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
Cheers for the help. Apa Jang Kau Tjari, Palupi? is done - a bit short, but unfortunately all the books are snippet view. I put it on DYK, maybe you’d like to add some ALT hooks :p Juxlos (talk) 15:07, 9 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • Hi Ed. Just doing some housekeeping, as this talk page is a mess.
Sadly, my current situation (living in North America again) precludes me from continuing to write about the topics that interest me most, so I don't think I'll be active active again. I have tossed a few pictures on Commons, but that's about it. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 01:25, 15 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Missing cite in Christine Hakim edit

The article cites "Tempo 1989-11-18, Pacar" but no such source is listed in the bibliography. Can you please add? Thanks, Renata3 23:09, 23 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • Arsip Tempo has been down for almost six years. Fortunately, the original URL was in the article's history. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 21:10, 24 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Howdy edit

Hello, friend! I hope you've been well. It's been a long time since I've written anything substantial, but since you lived in Yogyakarta and had mentioned interest in teaching ESL, I thought you might be interested in my recent article on Kurnianingrat, Indonesia's English curriculum pioneer. No pressure to do anything here, just wanted to drop a friendly message. :) —Arsonal (talk + contribs)— 22:57, 5 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • Wow, long time no see. I've been back in Canada for a little more than three years now, so I don't have access to any materials that could help supplement that... impressive article that honestly doesn't need much supplementing. Glad to see you back editing! — Chris Woodrich (talk) 23:25, 8 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
Also, Arsonal, reading through that article makes me wonder if she was involved with Berita Film Indonesia and their English-language propaganda magazine Impressions of the Fight in defence of Freedom and Democracy in Indonesia, which was printed by Pertjetakan Negara c. 1946. The language is exemplary, and if she was entrusted with matters of state diplomacy because of her language skills, it follows she could have been involved in the production of communication media. It's a shame that these writers went uncredited (as true in many cases... IIRC, Bali: The Isle of Gods and Bali: Where, What, When, How did not credit their individual writers). — Chris Woodrich (talk) 23:37, 8 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
Interesting! I haven't come across mentions of Berita Film Indonesia or Pertjetakan Negara in biographical sketches of Kurnianingrat, which were actually based on chapters from her incomplete memoir. If she had significant involvement in those efforts, she probably would have mentioned them. But it sounded like her main focus during Revolusi was teaching and providing for her family. Her gig with Voice of Free Indonesia was obtained through her good friend Utami (wife of Soerjadi Soerjadarma), so if Utami was involved with the two entities you mentioned, then there's a possibility Kurnianingrat could have been involved as well. Their relationship would be interesting to revisit, but sources are scarce. I've found one mention of Kurnianingrat later becoming involved with Badan Sensor Film (now Lembaga Sensor Film) in the 1960s because of Utami, but I haven't been able to corroborate it or determine the context of this information yet. Thanks for always adding value with your knowledge! —Arsonal (talk + contribs)— 04:04, 12 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Oh, Utami was involved in Radio Free Indonesia? I'd been wondering how she ended up chairwoman of the LSF... I had initially assumed it was part of Soekarno's broader efforts to bring different bodies under his indirect control, but now that you mention she had prior broadcasting experience, it makes a lot more sense. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 00:14, 13 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
I have another lead. In your previous research on Indonesian films, did you ever come across a magazine named Purnama published by Badan Penerbit Aneka? One of the issues apparently includes a quote by Kurnianingrat commenting about the work of Badan Sensor Film as the vice chair of the censorship committee. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)— 15:18, 30 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Purnama... No, I don't think so. I had a couple issues of Terang Boelan, but this would have been '49 - '52 or thereabouts. For the mid-1950s, all I ever had were Film Varia and a few Minggu Pagi. Unfortunately, none of those ended up digitised before I moved back to Canada.  — Chris Woodrich (talk) 22:50, 30 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Nice to see you back! edit

Hi Chris, I just noticed you editing again as I had some of your Indonesian film star bios on my watchlist. Happy New Year, good to see you again! Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 14:25, 6 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

  • Hi Ian. I'm not going to be too active, but I've been popping in every once in a while, especially with Aminah Cendrakasih and Remy Sylado both having passed recently. If things settle down IRL, I might end up taking that retirement banner down.  — Chris Woodrich (talk) 21:37, 9 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Ditto on Ian's comment - great to see you around again! - SchroCat (talk) 18:57, 11 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
