Short paging disambiguation pages

Explain to me please why that even needs to be done... Sadly many disambiguation pages will be shorter than you want, they're disambiguation pages not articles. Why don't you set something up so that the short article list avoids pages that (are properly) marked as not being articles instead? I've just taken a look at the category that you are adding DAB pages to and it says this: "as they meet a minimum level of quality, but that still could benefit from attention and fleshing out." Disambiguation pages, as I said above, are not articles and therefore do not need to be "fleshed out". You yourself shortened the pages further at the same time you added the longcomment template to them. I'm removing your changes, and I'll watch that category for other DABs. If you have a problem with this you can start an edit war or come up with something more convincing that makes what you're saying valid.  ^{æronphonehome}  04:00, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

Further proof that editing Wikipedia turns people into a powder keg. I have been editing DABs for a year now, the two articles you marked as short is the first time I've even seen that template, and you are the first to proclaim the inevitability what you do. Veiled threats from one established user to another aside, what is your response to the information I've shown you that makes it look as if short paging a DAB is going to far? Since you've been silent for two days I'll assume that the issue is resolved between us. I agree that DABs do not belong on the Short Pages list, but equally do not belong on your watch list or need a template reserved for articles. A bug for this problem already exists on Bugzilla so at Mannings suggestion I bumped it and commented on the nature of the bug. Hopefully you won't continue applying that template and allow time for a MediaWiki update, because once it takes place however many DABs are on your page will have to be manually removed whereas all DABs on the Short Pages list will simply disappear.  ^{æronphonehome}  04:44, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Template:Surnames by language

Excellent idea on adding exclusion parameter! I've made it optional, and reworded a bit to allow more extensive exclusions. See Category:English-language surnames for the most (so far). Thanks for making the effort to update all of the existing categories. I've added documentation, so hopefully folks will take the time to follow the examples in the future.

Highspeed

I've seen the vandalism that Highspeed did to your talk page, but where are the personal attacks? An IP claiming to be Highspeed has posted at my talk page, asking for a review or at least the ability to post an unblock template on the talk page. As you seem to be involved in a dispute with this user, I'm gravely concerned not only that you blocked them, but that you attempted to stifle their ability to seek independent review of your action. As is mentioned very explicitly both in the blocking policy and at Special:Block, that option should generally not be used without careful consideration. Now, I do see this very unusual edit, but given that I see no warnings in the history of Highspeed's talk page history, and this user has been with us since 2006, I simply don't see how an immediate and indefinite block, with zero warnings and no obvious history of disruption, set by an involved administrator two days after the fact, can be justified, let alone the talk page lock. Please be mindful of the chilling effects your actions may have on impacted users and wield your tools carefully. I'm referring specifically to discussion at Template talk:Monterey County, California and here at your own talk page where Highspeed was requesting the deletion of several articles you had recently created -- apparently in your eyes, this marks a user as a sockpuppet, vandal, and "racist". I say again: indefinitely blocking an editor who's been with us since 2006, and removing that user's ability to appeal, is extremely draconian. You are not judge, jury, and executioner. You've repeatedly accused Highspeed and apparently Norcalal of being socks of Biaswarrior or otherwise colluding, but I don't see any evidence of that -- and I do say that having checkusered or otherwise examined several of Biaswarrior's actual socks. German politicians

Appreciate your comments at the drama queen centre that is ANI. What frustrates me greatly is that the articles are intended to be transferred and would seme to differ from others in that the information exists already on wikipedia in German, it just needs putting in english. Claus Peter Poppe was expanded in two minutes flat and clearly meets content requirements. Any other one of them could be, they are not perma stubs and anybody who can be bothered can expand in two minutes flat. Over half of the articles up for deletion to not even violate BLP they are about politicians who died 30 years for example. It is always this moral panic by the community, the same attitude they showed when we made the geobot proposals. People are willing to spend time moaning and calling me names but if each and every one of them actually supported the new articles and did there best to build up the articles we'd at least get half of the new articles up to scratch. It is very disheartening to face this kind of opposition from people. I don't have to spend a minute of my time editing wikipedia and this sucks. Dr. Blofeld ^{White cat} 10:20, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

Sujit Mukherjee

Hi Carlos, I saw your deletion of the above article yesterday. It is an article I am in the process of creating. Just started it, and mentioned as a start stub. Sujit Mukherjee is notable as probably the best cricket writer to have come out of India, and in many opinions, one of the best ever. It is surprising that he as not there on wikipedia in the first place.
I do understand if your concern is that of the stub article being created without sources, and without enough information (that will change, the plan I have is to complete a detailed one in some time). The writer, however, is notable. Here are a few examples. Obituary on The Hindu, reputed Indian newspaper, List of books by Sujit Mukherjee, from an online portal, He has been a First-Class cricketer- Cricinfo, [2], [3], [4]. Sutterville

Hey, I was wondering what prompted you to redirect Sutterville, California to Sutter Creek, California? On page 565 of California's Geographic Names, for Sutter Creek there doesn't appear to be an alternate name as "Sutterville", but there is a "Sutterville" listing on that same page. I went searching for a Wikipedia entry on Sutterville because it is a California Historical Landmark now. I have ancient APN books at where I work, and Sutterville is mapped out to be its own area. Nowadays that area is probably within the city limits of Sacramento, but Sutterville Road remains a major thoroughfare.

I am the son of a banned user of en.wiki and I want to ask you if the fact that I am going to use the same modem of my father (I live with him and my family in Coconut Creek, a town inside the greater Miami metropolitan area) will create problems. I apologize in advance if this is not the proper way to ask you a question about this edit. I discovered only discovered that the link from the page Flatland (film) regarding the creator Ladd Ehlinger Jr was a redirect back to the same page today when I went to update information on the page. The original page was created by a intern for the film over two years ago and I did not realize that neither the director/animator/editor Ladd Ehlinger Jr nor the writer Tom Whalen had individual pages as did the Composer Mark Slater.

Is there a way to recover the original material that you may have "deleted" and/or change the redirect to an actual page such as the composer Mark Slater has? Ella nunca ha escrito nada agresivo ni ha participado en alguna edit war desde su inscripcion el pasado marzo 2009. Cuando se inscribio' te pidio' si podia usar wikipedia aunque su marido estaba "banned" y tu le dijiste que no habia problema alguno ([5]). What do you mean, various populated places are being deleted right and left? I haven't seen an AFD on a place in ages actually. IN my view there are more AFDs on bands than places. Agnes of Anhalt-Dessau and nobility cruft

Here are some thoughts about articles on members of the nobility, as a follow-up to your AfD nomination of Agnes of Anhalt-Dessau. Outside of situations where the holder of a title of notability was automatically included in their country's parliament (as was historically true for members of the peerage of the United Kingdom and its predecessor countries), I agree that notability is not inherent in a noble title. But WP:NOTINHERITED can be misleading. People with the advantages that come with being born into a country's nobility (education, wealth, connections, sometimes high military rank) are likelier than most to do things that will make them notable. Finding the evidence of that notability for someone who died a long time ago can be difficult, though, particularly for people outside the English-speaking world. I found out about Agnes of Anhalt-Dessau's book from a brief reference in the Los Angeles Times, for example, and at first I couldn't find it in a library catalog because I was looking under the English-language title (the book was published in German and later in Italian, but apparently not in English). Still, because members of the nobility historically received the kind of attention that movie stars do today, there is still some chance of establishing notability for them.

Many articles on people like Agnes of Anhalt-Dessau start out as if they were copied from a genealogy book. This fact shouldn't distract us from the possibility that notability by Wikipedia standards can be established, and should probably discourage us from tagging such an article for deletion without a careful search.

I would also say that someone who is created a noble, rather than acquiring a title by birth or marriage, is almost certainly notable both for other accomplishments and from the media coverage that the title's creation would have caused. - Eastmain (talk) 04:33, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

Well, I am a citizen of Mersin and I found this assertion highly questionable. For one thing, there is neither molybdenum production nor abandoned molybdenum mines around Mersin. More important than that is the fact that molybdenum had been analyzed first time in 1778 in Sweeden long after ancient ages. Can you name a second source other than Catholic Encyclopedia ? Thank you a lot for your laborious work on numerous stubs about Armenian villages. I really appreciate your job and understand its importancy, unlike some ukwiki users, or, to be more precise, uk:User:Ліонкінг, he's also User:Ліонкінг here. Most his edits in ukwiki consist of exact translations of your (or Cxz111's) articles into Ukrainian without any mentions of your of his authorship. Furthermore, these translations exclude links to any reliable sources - Ліонкінг is attributing this to the fact that "they are present here and in frwiki articles, and the information shouldn't arouse any doubts". Most likely, it was done in order to make him able to do whatever he wants with the articles (changing dates, coords etc., and posing it as "update"). Note that I've been indefinitely blocked on ukwiki, just because "nobody has challenged the blocking" and with no explanations and accusations of infringement of certain rules - the only my guilt was in adding templates "no sources" and "citation needed" to unverified data. However, it didn't prevent Ліонкінг from reverting my edits with comments like "rv vandalism" and alleging me for his harassment. His behavior suggests that he poses himself as the genuine author of the stubs.

Well, I'm not asking you to do anything with my contribs - given the total turmoil in the Ukrainian Wikipedia, I'm not surprised - I just would like to explain you the situation in whole.

The historical (i.e. no longer extant) "Coyote Valley Rancheria" GNIS entry used for this article refers to a former location of this reservation, now part of Lake Mendocino and/or the surrounding recreation area (check the coordinates). The modern day reservation, whose official name does in fact appear to be "Coyote Valley Reservation" according to the BIA [6], is located to the northwest, on Coyote Valley Boulevard (approximate coordinates 39.254015,-123.207596). Policy on Classification by Ethnicity, Gender, Religion and Sexuality

Hi, I have a problem with the article White Argentine. In the article I mentioned many people who are Argentine by birth and by option (they immigrated when they were children and stayed in Argetnina until their death, or they are now living there). All those people mentioned in the article are perfectly Caucasian by phenotype, and all have European/Middle Eastern ancestry. To see the names, check this older version of the article, for they are now removed. This is because some users appeared criticizing the article and alleging that mentioning all those persons without a source that explicitly define them as "White Argentine/Argentinian" was a breach to Wikipedia's BLP policy. Is that true? Because I read the article of WP policy on categorization by ethnicity, gender, religion and sexuality, and the topic "Race" is still under dispute. Besides, one of the users that criticizes the article is also involved in the proposal/discussion/RfC of the policy itself. If the matter isn't still resolved, can they apply a rule that it is not fully valid yet? If I provide sources that every living Argentine mentioned in the article is of predominantly European ancestry, isn't that enough to define him/her as White? Category Dacian tribes

The Category:Dacian tribes was merged here under CFD 2009 May 28 however this creates a problem.

I am working to add categories like gods, towns, kings, tribes under Category:Dacia. With this merge it is no longer possible to add the tribes.

Why not have Category:Dacian tribes under both Category:Dacia and Category:Ancient tribes in the Balkans?

Hello - I don't want to start an edit war and I ain't gonna - but why take out the majority of contributions to this page without explanation - if it was you? Mean does have a standard and acknowledged meaning of stingy or 'miserliness'. I think it is appropriate to list that if the cruel and and angry, cheifly American meaning is listed. Mr. Mean of the Mr. Men, the British-written children's literature series, makes the distinction clear - since he was given the name 'Mr. Stingy' in the original American release according to the Mr. Men article. Splitting the article is the protocol with large tornado outbreaks from what I understand and what I understood when I was a more regular editor. Is there a way to move specifically a section so that the history of just that section is retained? Inferno, Lord of Penguins

Tram, Kentucky

My edits weren't based on a misunderstanding of the USGS listings; they were primarily based on the fact that Tram (and the other places I changed) are not listed in the 2010 census gazetteer of places in Kentucky or the 2010 population tables, which include all other new CDPs such as Auxier. My mention of the USGS listings was based on the census class codes; note for Auxier the census class code is U5, for a census-designated place, but for Tram the census class code is U6, for an unincorporated place which is not a census-designated place. I'm not sure why the GNIS has listings for census-designated places which aren't recognized by the U.S. Census Bureau, but it appears to be a mistake on the part of USGS. My source that they aren't CDPs is their absence from the census gazetteer and population counts, which contain all places included in the 2010 census. The gazetteer also includes places from the 2000 and 1990 censuses, and Tram isn't listed their either. Besides, considering the USGS source is a list of "New Census Designated Places" submitted in 2010, it is unlikely to be from an earlier census. Since census-designated places are by definition places which are identified by the Census Bureau, the fact that the places aren't included in the census gazetteer or its population counts means they are not CDPs in 2010. I think alt names for cities are fascinating, but just like New York City's lede doesn't mention New Amsterdam, this kind of information should be in the history section. As a good comparison, Istanbul does mention Constantinople and Byzantium in the lede, but that's because the city was very well known for those names in earlier eras. If you want to avoid trouble like that in the future (for towns, townships, and villages in China), then I suggest you do one of the following: 1) add Chinese at the very top of the article. 2) List the county-level division that the settlement is in. And, after reading WP:NC-ZH#Administrative, title the article appropriately 3) Add coordinates independent of any possible bullshit GEONet could give you.

Hello, again. I really must protest the boilerplate. Your are capitalizing white, which should be lower-cased, and you are giving the amount of the ocean or rivers or lakes or whatever to areas that are almost completely dry. Also you are using a percent symbol (%) in text when it should be in a word, percent. Now I have to go through all the articles I am watching and correct everything. flags in infoboxes

I respect your belief that flags make an article prettier. However, aesthetics are in the eye of the beholder. The Wikipedia manual of style specifically discourages the use of flags in infoboxes. As it says at MOS:FLAG, they are unnecessarily distracting and give undue prominence to one field among many. Please stop adding flags to infoboxes. —Stepheng3 (talk) 18:03, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

It does, absolutely. And its a complete contradiction when we see thousands of articles which tons of flags in them. Personally I think the country parameters of infoboxes look odd without flags and bare and can I change Peru or something to Peru. An editor persisently reverted the changes you made to MOS fFLAG. Ajabaj

Hi Carlos,

I am attempting to deorphan the Ajabaj article you created and I am running into some difficulty. The article states that Ajabaj is a town in Syunik Province, but the Syunik Province article states that there are only 109 communities in the province, all of which are listed, and Ajabaj is not in that list. Are towns different from communities in Armenia? If so, could a list of non-community towns be added to the Syunik Province article?

Hi Carlos,

My concern is that Ajabaj, Getishen, and Vocheti are all orphans without any apparent articles that could meaningfully link to them. If they were merged, the coordinates could simply be stated in the body text of the article rather than being pinpointed on a map; the differences in location are not very large anyway. The other option is to create a navbox that links to all the villages in the raion of Kapan divided by community, but that would necessitate determining the community that each village belongs to.

...for creating Wolf, Nevada County, California. I had left it as a red link in the Wolf (disambiguation) page for years as a lacuna hoping to attract someone to fill it in. Red link items are a no-no on WP:MOSDAB, and made me worried and embarassed. Say, I was thinking....do you think it would be helpful to a user if each "Wolf, CA" articles mentioned the other somehow? Something like a "not to be confused with" statement, maybe a hatnote, or a link to the disambiguation page subsection, or the independant disambiguation page Wolf, California, or some other such thing? The reason I mention it is, there seems to me to be a high likelyhood of there being some user confusion when there is such a thing as two places with the same name in the same state. La Palma 2010 demographics figures errors

I have totally changed the reading of the 2010 La Palma, California demographics figures for two reason. First off it makes no sense to list the number of people in each racial group instead of the percentages. Percentages are the better way to go. However I am pointing this out to you for the second reason, that is that you made statements about the data that are not supported by the data. Specifically you do not know how many of the various Asian populations sub-groups, such as Koreans, may or may not have been part of the 0.3% of the population that was Asian and Hispanic or Latino. You are mixing and misreading your sources. For all you know all 0.3% of the Hispanic Asian are Korean. On the other hand for all you know absolutly none of them are Korean. You can not legitimately list the Korean population when specifying the non-Hispanic or Latino population of La Palma, or in fact any place that has any Hispanic or Latino Asians.John Pack Lambert (talk) 17:25, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

Demographic Additions to Vista, CA

Are you sure you want to add all that information for the city? It seems like it overwhelms the article to have so much information, all of which is easily available at the link, and which any researcher would need to visit anyway if s/he were looking to confirm. I understand that it meets the technical standards to add it here, and I respect your substantial contributions in the community, so I'm not editing it or deleting, but please consider again whether it's appropriate or necessary. Carlos, I found your response rather harsh. If I've offended you, I apologize. Clearly, MOSFLAG is an area where good-faith editors can have honest differences of opinion as to what's best for the encyclopedia and its users.

Like most editors, I am primarily motivated by a desire to improve the encyclopedia. I've been using {{Infobox settlement}} regularly since at least 2009. Now I feel caught in the crossfire, and it's uncomfortable for me. I'm not interested in sabotaging any discussion, but I reserve the right to disagree in a respectful fashion.

That said, I searched the edit history of Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Geography back to 2007. I didn't find the discussion in question, but that's probably because I didn't know what to look for. Carlos, I think perhaps you misunderstood me. I'm looking for the extensive discussion that justified you creating this project-wide exception to MOSFLAGS. The discussion you pointed me to does not mention the Manual of Style or any of the six other infoboxes covered by the exception, nor does it explain why flags are desired in {{Infobox settlement}}. I, too, find our dialog frustrating. Since I'm not trying to change any guidelines, just implement them, I don't feel any need to start RFC.

I've done more research, and here's the sequence of events, as I see it:

1. There was a long-standing practice of including flag icons in geographical infoboxes such as {{Infobox settlement}}, particularly for settlements outside the United States, though of course it was never done 100% consistently. I'm not aware of any serious public discussion of this practice prior to 2010; it was merely the status quo.
2. Attempts to parse the subdivision_name= parameter in {{Infobox settlement}} eventually led to performance concerns, which were raised by Wikid77 in March 2010. Wikid77 suggested removing all the flag icons, but Xeno told him not to bother because the concern was being addressed through template changes and a bot request. The MOS was not mentioned, but neither was any rationale given for including flag icons in {{Infobox settlement}}.
3. When the bot finished its work in June 2010, the performance issue was closed.
4. In December 2010, there was a brief discussion at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (icons) about avoiding flags in infoboxes for individuals. No geographical infoboxes were mentioned. Jpatokal added a blanket prohibition at MOSFLAG against flags in infoboxes, which was ignored by WikiProject Geography.
5. In February, the new MOSFLAG guideline came to my attention when Gnevin requested deletion of all flags from {{Geobox}}. This seemed non-controversial and was quickly implemented.
6. In early June, you were adding 2010 census data for California cities and CDPs in a big way (thank you again for that) and changing the subdivision_name= to {{USA}} in every article you touched.
7. On June 10th, I asked you not to add the flag icons, pointing you to MOSFLAG. You said you would update MOSFLAG to reflect that {{Infobox settlement}} was an exception. You did, but were promptly reverted. You started a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (icons).
8. On June 13th, you quietly added a footnote to Wikipedia:WikiProject Geography indicating that there was a project-wide exception to MOSFLAG.
9. On July 9th, I saw that MOSFLAG had not been successfully changed. I began removing flag icons from {{Infobox settlement}}, mostly ones you'd added the month before.
10. On July 19th, you asked me to stop remove flag icons, and I did so. We began the current dialog.

I suspect that you misled me when you claimed that your June 13th edit "was the result of a long discussion" and have been trying to understand where you were coming from. We don't seem to be getting anywhere.

Reading the discussion at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (icons), I see that there's considerable disagreement about whether MOSFLAG should apply to {{Infobox settlement}}. The arguments on both sides seem to boil down to matters of taste. I am keeping out of it.

Carlos, I do not see anywhere in the infobox template where we should be posting flagicons. To the contrary WP:MOSFLAG says don't add flags. The edit summary you added for Corona, California said WP:GEOGRAPHY, but that is simply the project page -- it does not serve as a guideline. The settlement infobox template has a line for a flag, which I read as applying to the flag of the particular settlement. It does not suggest adding flags for the higher levels of government. Aside from China, and possibly Russia, I actually think Iran is missing more sizeable towns than any country on here, certainly by population. In fact we are literally missing hundreds of cities I think, which is rare, given I've gone through most countries and tried to ensure we at least have articles on cities and major towns.. Most countries already have articles on the cities, just most of the small towns and villages are missing... Some of these are really big towns on google maps! ♦ Dr. Blofeld

Sure I can read Persian . Sometimes if there are not phonetic markers and the word is not familiar , it seems to be difficult to read the word correctly (same as English) . I am all for comprehensive templates like the Armenian ones etc but it would be ridiculous to have 1500 articles linked in a template!! At least if there are going to be a lot of districts you should make optimum use of the width of the pages!! I've addressed it here. My eeling is that if the templates are going to be that long you should use shrinkable sub section templates like the Serbian monasteries one. When the template starts to approach x 20 the length of the article it becomes an issue, especially as you are against shrinkable templates...♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:55, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

Ah its my browser, I just looked on standard on Safari browser and it is indeed 3/4. That's fine. Trust me on my browser the template looks ridiculous and covers less than 1/4 of the width!! If the template is going to be twice or more times as long though perhaps you would consider shrinkable sections like the Serbian monastery template. MSU Interview

Dear Carlos,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you.
