GA Sweeps update

Thanks to everyone's efforts to the GA Sweeps process, we are currently over 90% done with only 226 articles remain to be swept! As always, I want to thank you for using your time to ensure the quality of the older GAs. With over 50 members participating in Sweeps, that averages out to about 4 articles per person! If each member reviews an article once a week this month (or several!), we'll be completely finished. At that point, awards will be handed out to reviewers. As an added incentive, if we complete over 100 articles reviewed this month, I will donate $100 to Wikipedia Forever on behalf of all GA Sweeps participants. I hope that this incentive will help to increase our motivation for completing Sweeps while supporting Wikipedia in the process. If you have any questions about reviews or Sweeps let me know and I'll be happy to get back to you. Again, thank you for taking the time to help with the process, I appreciate your efforts! --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 00:05, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

Brazil

Hello, Gary! I am currently working on the article about Brazil along with other editors. We have almost completely remade it from scratch. I noticed that you were one of the editors who were against the article's assessment to featured status. I was wondering if you could take a look in it, but not a serious overly detailed look because we are not finished yet. Just a quick look to see if we are going into the right direction. Thank you very much and regards, --Lecen (talk) 03:26, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

JavaScript issues

I tried adding one of your scripts to my JavaScript file and it is not working despite purging my cache. Am I doing something wrong or is something else happening? @harej 23:23, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

It appears the problems have been caused by my use of enhanced recent changes. I don't know if you've precluded this as impossible yet, but if you can, can you please try to get it to work with enhanced recent changes? Thank you, @harej 23:32, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

I saw your changes to WP:HIDEPAGES indicating it is deprecated. So I tried making the css changes, even looked at your css template, which doesn't seem to have any hidden pages. Can you reply to my help request at Wikipedia talk:Hide Pages in Watchlist#CSS pages? tedder (talk) 02:27, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

Unreferenced BLPs

Hello Gary King! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 3 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 936 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

Firebug reccomendation

thank you for the reccomendation to try Firebug and venkman. I have been trying to debug some JavaScript that is on my Monobook page, but I am discovering that the monoboook.js does not get loaded each time a page loads. Further, firebug does not break when I set a breakpoint within monobook.js . Suggestions?
thanks, Harry

I tried Control-Shift-R but monobook fails to show up in Firebug under scripts. Am I looking in the right place? DarkStarHarry (talk) 16:00, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

okay, i managed to get the monobook script under the "Script" tab. I tried setting a breakpoint in monobook, but the script doesn't stop. I also set a breakpoint in the master page where monobook is supposed to be loaded, but when I hit Control-Shift-R, the breakpoint doesn't stop anything from loading. Occasionally, the script will stop at the first of the 'wg' variable lines in the master page. Suggestions? thanks for your help so far, Harry . DarkStarHarry (talk) 19:45, 24 January 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 January newsletter

We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. We've had some shakeups regarding late entries, flag changes and early dropouts, but the competition is now established- there will be no more flag changes or new competitors. Congratulations to   Sasata (submissions), our current leader, who, at the time of writing, has more listed points than   Hunter Kahn (submissions) and   TonyTheTiger (submissions) (second and third place respectively) combined. A special well done also goes to   Fetchcomms (submissions)- his artcle Jewel Box (St. Louis, Missouri) was the first content to score points in the competition.

Around half of competitors are yet to score. Please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. 64 of the 149 current competitors will advance to round 2- if you currently have no points, do not worry, as over half of the current top 64 have under 50 points. Everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places in round 2! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, by email or on IRC. Good luck! THanks for the help: Re firebug

I managed to figure it out - my script was quite faulty and Firebug wasn't breaking b/c syntax was messed up. Have a look at my script if you'd like - it's finished now.

Add importScript('User:DarkStarHarry/externMapCoords.js'); to your monobook.

The script rewrites coordinate links and bypasses GeoHack to go straight to Google Maps.
Comments welcome.

February GA Sweeps update

Progress as of January 2010

Thanks to everyone's efforts to the GA Sweeps process, we are currently over 95% done with around 130 articles left to be swept! Currently there are over 50 members participating in Sweeps, that averages out to about 3 articles per person! If each member reviews an article once a week this month (or several!), we'll be completely finished. At that point, awards will be handed out to reviewers. Per my message last month, although we did not review 100 articles last month, I still made a donation of $90 (we had 90 reviews completed/initiated) to Wikipedia Forever on behalf of all GA Sweeps reviewers. I would like to thank everyone's efforts for last month, and ask for additional effort this month so we can be finished. I know you have to be sick of seeing these updates (as well as Sweeps itself) by now, so please do consider reviewing a few articles if you haven't reviewed in a while. If you have any questions about reviews or Sweeps let me know and I'll be happy to get back to you. Again, thank you for taking the time to help with the process, I appreciate your efforts! --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 02:32, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

Ideally, by the process being over. It looks like it will be over in one or two months depending on participation. If it unfortunately drags on for another month, I'll try and remember not to send you a notice. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 07:37, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I don't like spamming everybody's pages (as I'm sure nobody likes to receive it). I'm just trying to push everyone to review a few more articles. There's some editors who have already reviewed so many (I don't mind), and it would be great if all members actually did just the few reviews. Unfortunately, people retire, are busy, or just get sick of Sweeps. If we don't finish this month, I'll make sure it's done by March. --Happy editing! WikiCup 2010 February newsletter

Round one is over, and round two has begun! Congratulations to the 64 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our first round. A special well done goes to   Sasata (submissions), our round one winner (1010 points), and to   Hunter Kahn (submissions) and   TonyTheTiger (submissions), who were second and third respectively (640 points/605 points). Sasata was awarded the most points for both good articles (300 points) and featured articles (600 points), and TonyTheTiger was awarded the most for featured topics (225 points), while Hunter Kahn claimed the most for good topics (70).   Staxringold (submissions) claimed the most featured lists (240 points) and featured pictures (35 points),   Geschichte (submissions) claimed the most for Did you know? entries (490 points),   Jujutacular (submissions) claimed the most for featured sounds (70 points) and   Candlewicke (submissions) claimed the most for In the news entries (40 points). No one claimed a featured portal or valued picture.

Credits awarded after the end of round one but before round two may be claimed in round two, but remember the rule that content must have been worked on in some significant way during 2010 by you for you to claim points. The groups for round two will be placed up shortly, and the submissions' pages will be blanked. This round will continue until 28 April, when the top two users from each group, as well as 16 wildcards, will progress to round three. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup; thank you to all doing this last round, and particularly to those helping at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. GA Sweeps Completed!

Thanks to everyone's amazing efforts in February, we have reviewed all of the articles and are now finished with Sweeps! There are still about 30 articles currently on hold, and once those reviews are completed, I will send you a final message about Sweeps process stats including the total number of articles that were passed and failed. If you have one of these open reviews, be sure to update your count when the review is completed so I can compile the stats. You can except to receive your award for reviewing within the next week or two. Although the majority of the editors did not start Sweeps at the beginning in August 2007 (myself included), over 50 editors have all come together to complete a monumental task and improve many articles in the process. I commend you for sticking with this often challenging task and strengthening the integrity of the GA WikiProject as well as the GAs themselves. I invite you to take a break from reviewing (don't want you to burn out!) and then consider returning/starting to review GANs and/or contribute to GAR reviews. With your assistance, we can help bring the backlog down to a manageable level and help inspire more editors to improve articles to higher classes and consider reviewing themselves. Again, thank you for putting up with difficult reviews, unhappy editors, numerous spam messages from me, and taking the time to help with the process, I appreciate your efforts! --Happy editing! Project Nekton

It's totally silly to move 4 paragraphs out of an article that is not overlong already, just to have them under a different title. I've duplicated them and and put them back. There's a lot more Nekton stuff in the Picard/Walsh book which could possibly go in the subarticle, but meanwhile there's no point in moving material, making the reader follow a link, just to make a point. That just causes an Easter-egg hunt for somebody trying to read about Trieste's most famous dive. SBHarris 03:41, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Deus Ex

By moving Deus Ex to Deus Ex (video game), you've broken most of the links and redirects to it. I hope you're intent on fixing/deleting them. --92.26.49.199 (talk) 22:07, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

A few of them don't need to be changed, like you say, but almost all of them refer to things that only occur in Deus Ex and not Invisible War or presumably the upcoming third game. For example, the AI character Morpheus, Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan, and the Dragon's Tooth Sword all appear only in the first game, yet their articles now link/redirect to the series; Carolyn McCormick was a voice actress for just the one game, yet her article now links to the series; and there are numerous other articles about Deus Ex and other subjects that refer to the game itself but now link to the series; and I could go on. I consider it important for cohesion, but if you can't be bothered to clean up after yourself then it's not my problem. --92.26.49.199 (talk) 03:14, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

This will help editors in restoring confidence to the GAN process as well as actively improving, polishing, and rewarding good content. If you are interested in participating in the drive, please place your name here. Awards will be given out to those who review certain numbers of GANs as well as to those who review the most. WikiCup 2010 March newsletter

We're half way through round two, and everything is running smoothly.   Hunter Kahn (submissions) leads overall with 650 points this round, and heads pool B.   TonyTheTiger (submissions) currently leads pool C, dubbed the "Group of Death", which has a only a single contestant yet to score this round (the fewest of any group), as well five contestants over 100 points (the most). With a month still to go, as well as 16 wildcard places, everything is still to play for. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Although unrelated to the WikiCup, April sees a Good Article Nominations backlog elimination drive, formulated as a friendly competition with small awards, as the Cup is. Several WikiCup contestants and judges have already signed up, but regular reviewers and those who hope to do more reviewing are more than welcome to join at the drive page. WikiProject Economics census

Hello there. Sorry to bother you, but you are (titularly at least) a member of WP:WikiProject Economics, as defined by this category. If you don't know me, I'm a Wikipedia administrator, but an unqualified economist. I enjoy writing about economics, but I'm not very good at it, which is why I would like to support in any way I can the strong body of economists here on Wikipedia. I'm only bothering you because you are probably one of them. Together, I'd like us to establish the future direction of WikiProject Economics, but first, we need to know who we've got to help.

Whatever your area of expertise or level of qualification, if you're interested in helping with the WikiProject (even if only as part of a larger commitment to this wonderful online encyclopedia of ours), would you mind adding your signature to this page? It only takes a second. Thank you.

fpc thought on nominations viewer

Hi Gary, I've just tried out the nominations viewer for the featured picture candidates page. It's great! Thank you for writing it. I do have one observation, which I'd like to phrase as a request, if you don't mind. Featured picture candidates need a minimum of five supporting votes before they can be promoted, and, unless a candidate is particularly "exciting", a lot of nominations receive the minimum five and are then ignored/skipped by those who look at it later. Weak supports generally only count as half, but your script is counting them as full supports. When users scan down the collapsed list, it makes it look like some nominations have reached the minimum five when they haven't. I think this may lead to nominations not reaching quorum due to the misunderstanding. Is there a way to ignore "weak support"s, not including them in the summary? Maedin\talk 17:57, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

Oh, and I've just noticed that "expand all" isn't working for me. Is it operator error?  :) Maedin\talk 18:00, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

Hi Gary King, I'm curious & I'm not sure what you are fixing. The way I see the figures are: there are 70-ish reviewers and, as of this morning, 15 unreviewed articles. Doing one more review each is not possible (unless another 55 articles, give or take, are nominted). Clearing the 60-ish Holds and the 30-ish reviews in progress would eliminate the backlog. GAN backlog elimination drive - 1 week to go

First off, on behalf of myself and my co-coordinator Wizardman, I would like to thank you for the efforts that you have made so far in this GAN backlog elimination drive. It has been nothing short of a success, and that is thanks to you. See this Signpost article about what this drive has achieved so far.

We're currently heading into the final week of the drive. At this time, if you have any GANs on review or on hold, you should be finishing off those reviews. Right now, we have more GANs on review or on hold than we do unreviewed. If you're going to start a GA review, please do so now so you can complete it by the end of the month and so that the nominator has a full 7-day window to address any concerns.

See you at the finish!

Nominations viewer comment

I've been impressed with the nominations viewer so far; it really simplifies looking through FAC. I will certainly be recommending it to others. One thing occurred to me: you have a way to identify commenters in the FAC comments. One thing that's been considered in the past as a way to encourage reviewers is a way to recognize those who review many articles. Would you, for example, be able to run your script over a set of botified FACs and come up with a list of username/# articles commented on for some given time period? Such a list would have many shortcomings, as it would not be able to distinguish a formatting fix from an multi-hour review, but it might still be interesting to see. WikiCup 2010 April newsletter

Round two is over, and we are down to our final 32. For anyone interested in the final standings (though not arranged by group) this page has been compiled. Congratulations to   Hunter Kahn (submissions), our clear overall round winner, and to   ThinkBlue (submissions) and   Arsenikk (submissions), who were solidly second and third respectively. There were a good number of high scorers this round- competition was certainly tough! Round three begins tomorrow, but anything promoted after the end of round two is eligible for points. 16 contestants (eight pool leaders and eight wildcards) will progress to round four in two months- things are really starting to get competitive.

Judge iMatthew has retired from Wikipedia, and we wish him the best. The competition has been ticking over well with minimal need for judge intervention, so thank you to everyone making that possible. A special thank you goes to participants   Stone (submissions) and   White Shadows (submissions) for their help in preparing for round three. Good luck everyone! Thank you for your participation in the April 2010 GAN backlog elimination drive

GAN backlog elimination drives chart up to 1 May

On behalf of my co-coordinator Wizardman, I'd like to especially thank you for your efforts over this past month's GAN backlog elimination drive. It has been nothing short of a complete success, which hopefully results in more expedient good article reviews, increasing users' confidence in the good article nomination processes. Even if you made just a small contribution, it still helped contribute to the success of this drive. Here is what we have accomplished this last month in this drive.

  • 661 total nominations were reviewed. 541 of them passed (~81.8%), 97 (~14.7%) failed, and 23 (~3.5%) ended on hold.
  • The WP:GAN page started at 110,126 bytes length on 1 April and ended at 43,387 bytes length at the end of 30 April (a 66,739 byte reduction in the page, about 60.6% less).
  • Excluding extremes, the longest wait for someone's GAN to be review was about 11.5 weeks at the beginning. (I mistook the figure when I reported to the Signpost that it was 13.) At the end, with the exception of one that was relisted, the longest wait is now at 10 days.
  • 63 different users participated, each having completed at least one GAN, with others also having helped out behind-the-scenes in making the drive a success.
  • The drive started with 463 GA nominations remaining and 388 unreviewed. At the end of the month, we ended with 89 remaining (374 or about 80.8% less) and 47 unreviewed (341 or about 87.9% less).

For those who have accomplished certain objectives in the drive, awards will be coming shortly. Again, thank you for your help in the drive, and I hope you continue to help review GA nominations and overall improve the quality of articles here on Wikipedia.

Hi - The dup entries are a minor bug (the bot was not expecting to find a recently promoted topic that's marked as de-featured). I haven't tried it yet, but I think I've fixed this. Hide rollback in watchlist

Hi Gary. The recent changes to the interface made popups go wonky in my watchlist (i.e., not working at all); the cause was determined to be scripts that rewrite the contributions screen, such as User:Gary King/hide rollback in watchlist.js. Do you think you can fix said script, as it has saved me many times from accidental rollbacks? Thanks, Dabomb87 (talk) 23:29, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

Having trouble with Nominations Viewer

Even after copy-pasting the code you put on my talk page into User:Giants2008/vector.js, I'm still not getting the Nominations Viewer to work; in fact, it didn't work for me before your post when I was still using Monobook skin. I'm not overly skilled technically, so I'm at a loss. Is there something I need to turn on, or some other software that is required? (I have bypassed the cache multiple times, and the other two scripts work properly). Giants2008 (27 and counting) 21:18, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

I'm on Internet Explorer, so that's most likely the problem. Thanks for taking a look at it. What a shame, as the Nominations Viewer would have been really useful for me. If you get a chance, you might want to add that to your documentation for the Viewer so IE users like myself will be warned of the issue. Giants2008 (27 and counting) 01:20, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

I have started to discover where User:Miesianiacal has added <small> tags around <ref>. The editor doesn't seems to like this. Thank you

Gary, the script looks great. I've been playing with the output in Excel and will post something at WT:FAC momentarily, but I wanted to thank you for putting the effort into this first. I don't think it will answer everyone's questions about reviewer level of effort, but I think it will be a very useful way of tracking effort and I plan to volunteer to post the results periodically. Thanks again. Mike Christie (talk) 09:51, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

One other thing: I was able to make it work in monobook, but it doesn't work in vector for me. I had to go back to the old interface to make it work. If I switch back and forth it disappears in the new interface but reappears in the old interface. I see Dr. pda's script in the vector interface, so the skin is running. Any idea what could be causing that? Mike Christie (talk) 10:20, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi! I saw that you had moved the see also and main article templates in iPhone#history and availability up above the images. Against my better judgement (I have a bad history with things like this) I tried to load the script, carefully following the instructions. I need it back. Any suggestions? Brianboulton (talk) 11:43, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

Brian, looking at the diffs, it appears that you added the script with a source tag around it. Looks like you noticed it and deleted the start of the tag, but not the end of it. Nom viewer

Thanks for your nomination viewer script--just gave it a try, and I can see it will be very useful. A couple of questions: I couldn't get it to work at first, and by process of elimination I found that this script of mine was preventing it. Any obvious thoughts? At the moment I comment it out to use the nom viewer. Other than that, a suggestion, akin to the point I suggested about the other script: it would be nice if the "participants" count could exclude the nominator (and therefore perhaps be called "reviewers"). I know it sounds picky, but I think it would be useful here because the two numbers side by side, number of participants (x) and number of supports (y), make the implicit statement that (x-y) reviewers do not yet support. (Even more significant where there's more than one nominator.) Trust this minor suggestion is welcome, and hope it can be incorporated at some point. I might well make others as I use the tool more, so please make it known if you prefer comments somewhere else. Thanks again for your work on these. PL290 (talk) 20:41, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

Stephens City, Virginia

You were the original GA reviewer on the Stephens City article. I thought you would like to know that the article finally passed GA (WHOOO!) on late May 31, 2010, though didn't get the GA template til a couple after 0:00 UTC/8:00 EST on June 1. I am working on getting it to FA quality with a TON of unofficial (and one official) peer reviews, so the work doesn't stop. Thought you would like to know. :) Take Care...NeutralHomerTalk • 02:48, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

GA's etc.

Hi Gary King,

(See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Good articles#GA icons for interwiki links are not a good idea, and were not addressed in the consensus discussion above.) There are English-language articles that are not GA-status, marked in the left hand column by bot with a GA-symbol when a foreign-language version has GA-status. Thanks so much for your help. I apologize if I'm adding work to your plate. I am curious though, how does one go about learning to write templates? Hello again, Gary/Archives ... since you are so keen on rescuing articles, I thought that I would point out these articles recently created by Atikadin (talk · contribs):

They're probably subjects worthy of articles (see Cullum Geographical Medal), but they're totally lacking in WP:RS (as created), and I'm not in a lipstick on a pig mood today (I'm thinking a Notable recipients section, cross-linked to articles about recipients by referencing the medal from their article, which solves the {{orphan}} problem) ... if you don't have the time or inclination, perhaps you can point them out to Some Other Editor for cleanup. :-)

WikiCup 2010 June newsletter

We're half way through 2010, and the end of the WikiCup is in sight! Round 3 is over, and we're down to our final 16. Our pool winners were   Ian Rose (submissions) (A),   Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) (B, and the round's overall leader),   ThinkBlue (submissions) (C)   Casliber (submissions) and   TonyTheTiger (submissions) (D, joint), but, with the scores reset, everything is to play for in our last pooled round. The pools will be up before midnight tonight, and have been selected randomly by J Milburn. This will be the toughest round yet, and so, as ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Though unaffiliated with the WikiCup, July sees the third Great Wikipedia Dramaout- a project with not dissimilar goals to the WikiCup. Everyone is welcome to take part and do their bit to contribute to the encyclopedia itself.

If you're interested in the scores for the last round of the Cup, please take a look at Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Round 3 and Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Full/Round 3. Our thanks go to   Stone (submissions) for compiling these. As was predicted, Group C ended up the "Group of Death", with 670 points required for second place, and, therefore, automatic promotion. This round will probably be even tougher- again, the top two from each of the two groups will make it through, while the twelve remaining participants will compete for four wildcard places- good luck everyone! Re:StarCraft II

Aye, I've kinda disengaged from the article while its been under development, but I'm game to work on it when its up. The two of us together should make short work of it. The development section still needs a lot more work though, there's a sheer tonne of information out there from a three year development cycle that's just not in the article. I reckon it could reach something comparable to Brutal Legend's development section. At the moment, its just a list of "on this date, this was declared" and basic design stuff from announcement.

Like you, I've the same requirement, I've got to play it first before working on the article. Hopefully the FT can wait for us to have our time with it before kicking up a fuss. I need to get my act together and finish off Tales of Monkey Island and the cleanup of Characters of StarCraft in the next 20 days, and then it should have my undivided attention. The SimTower article

About ten months back you did a major rewrite of the SimTower article and removed some information regarding its Japanese release (as The Tower) and added some info about its US release. Specifically you removed the information about its Saturn release in 1996, its DSi release last year (both in Japan), and changed the US release of its sequel 'Yoot Tower' to state that is was originally released for the Mega Drive in 1999. Since the first two items removed are pertinent to the history of the game I though of re-adding them as part of an attempt to go into more detail of the games origins. Regarding the US release, the Mega Drive was long since out of production by 1999 and was known as the Genesis in the US anyway. I can't find any mention of Yoot Tower getting a console release in the US, so I thought that would be okay to change also. Do you have any objections to me making these changes? If so let me know and we can talk it over. Lando242 (talk) 19:34, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi. :) I see that Corensearchbot tagged Criticism of advertising recently, and I see that you have added attribution in the edit summary subsequently. I just wanted to remind you that any time you copy content from one Wikipedia article to another, unless that content is all yours, you need to attribute in edit summary. You should also consider adding {{copied}} to the talk pages of both the original and the new article to make attribution clear, but only the edit summary is required. Since you didn't attribute in the first paste, I'm not sure if this is a one-off oversight or if you were unaware of this requirement. WikiCup 2010 July newsletter

We are half-way through our penultimate round, and nothing is yet certain. Pool A, currently led by   Sasata (submissions) has ended up the more competitive, with three contestants (  Sasata (submissions),   Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and   TonyTheTiger (submissions)) scoring over 500 points already. Pool B is led by   Casliber (submissions), who has also scored well over 500. The top two from each pool, as well as the next four highest scorers regardless of pool, will make it through to our final eight. As ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Planning has begun for the 2011 WikiCup, with open discussions concerning scoring and flags for next year's competition. Contributions to those discussions would be appreciated, especially concerning the flags, as next year's signups cannot begin until the flag issue has been resolved. Signups will hopefully open at some point in this round, with discussion about possible changing in the scoring/process opening some time afterwards.

Earlier this round, we said goodbye to   Hunter Kahn (submissions), who has bowed out to spend more time on the book he is authoring with his wife. We wish him all the best. In other news, the start of this round also saw some WikiCup awards sent out by   Suomi Finland 2009 (submissions). We appreciate his enthusiasm, and contestants are of course welcome to award each other prizes as they see fit, but rest assured that we will be sending out "official" awards at the end of the competition. It has been alot of work since that 2008 review, but since you were the reviewer, I thought you would like to know. :) Now it is on to TFA/R. :) Take Care...NeutralhomerTalk • 02:04, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Very nice job; the article has certainly come a long way since that GA. Gary King (talk · scripts) 02:48, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
Indeed it has. :) I hope to, after the TFA/R and a short break to breath a little, to take that massive history section, which is still under OTRS from the "Newtown History Center" and bring it back as a page of it's own, History of Stephens City, Virginia with sources a-plenty. Sourcing will happen before I create the page. That way history buffs can read up on the town's history and people who want a short blurb can have that too. But that is on the list of things to do. - NeutralhomerTalk • 02:59, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

How goes the campaign?

Just wondering how far along you are with the StarCraft 2 campaign. I'm new to featured (articles) and so will likely need (a lot) of help. Regards, NativeForeigner Talk/Contribs 16:45, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Are you done the game already? I actually got the game, but my computer is so old (a four-year-old laptop) that when I run the game, it crashes within 15 minutes. So, I'm going to be getting a new computer soon; either on August 15 at the earliest, or September 7 at the latest. (I'm not buying the computer because of the game—I've been thinking of buying a new computer since early 2010, the game is only an extra incentive. So then I'll have a laptop for mobile use and a desktop for home use.) So hopefully it shouldn't be long to complete the game once that's done. Gary King (talk · scripts) 21:59, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
No problem, and no I haven't. I was just wonderign if I should hurry up ;) NativeForeigner Talk/Contribs 17:53, 11 August 2010 (UTC)
I just finished the single-player campaign. I'll try to get to the article ASAP—I'm currently in the process of migrating all my data from my old computer to my new one, though, so I'm left with half a computer the entire time since half my stuff is on each computer. I should be up and running soon, though. Gary King (talk · scripts) 16:16, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Uncategorized Task Force in the Signpost

"WikiProject Report" would like to focus on the Categorized Patrol/Task Force for a Signpost article to be published next month. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Also, if you know anyone else who would like to participate in the interview, please share this with them. Have a great day. -Mabeenot (talk) 16:19, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 August newsletter

We have our final eight! The best of luck to those who remain. A bumper newsletter this week as we start our home straight.

We say goodbye to the six who fell at the final hurdle.   Geschichte (submissions) only just missed out on a place in the final eight.   Resolute (submissions) was not far behind.   Candlewicke (submissions) was awarded top points for in the news this round.   Gary King (submissions) contributed a variety of did you know articles.   Suomi Finland 2009 (submissions) said "I'm surprised to have survived so far into the competition", but was extactic to see Finland in the semi-finals.   Arsenikk (submissions) did not score this round, but has scored highly in previous rounds. We also say goodbye to   Ian Rose (submissions), who withdrew earlier this month after spending six weeks overseas. Anyone interested in this round's results can see them here and here. Thank you to   Stone (submissions) for these.

Signups for next year's competition are now open. Planning is ongoing, with a key discussion about judges for next year open. Discussion about how next year's scoring will work is ongoing, and thoughts are more than welcome at Wikipedia talk:WikiCup/Scoring. Also, TonyTheTiger is compiling some information and statistics on the finalists here- the final eight are encouraged to add themselves to the list.

Our final eight will play it out for two months, after which we will know 2010's WikiCup winner, and a variety of prizes will be awarded. As ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. I have nominated List of mergers and acquisitions by Condé Nast for featured list removal here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets the featured list criteria. Script Installer in the Signpost

Hi, the Script Installer looks like a quite interesting project, and one that might be worth covering in the Signpost. For a full story, it might be worth waiting until it is a bit more mature (e.g. supports more browsers) and has some kind of user base (maybe it has alreay? Didn't check). But even while it is still in Beta, we might consider running a brief note. I am sorry you waded into this mess, there was a lot of trouble putting this section together and not enough time to discuss your suggestion appropriately. Regards, HaeB (talk) 01:22, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

I'd only want to run a full story in the Signpost when the tool is matured, for sure. I only released it to the public yesterday, so it's still in beta. I don't think that the user base needs to be taken into account, though; only the tool's usefulness should be taken into account, just like any other tool, script, or gadget. Once I feel that the tool is ready, I'll call in more people to review it, and if enough people feel that it could benefit the average user, then at that point we could figure something out.
The ultimate plan of Script Installer is to be the only tool that someone needs to actively "install"; from there, they can browse a "Script Gallery" included in the tool, which lists the most popular scripts available, and the user can choose which ones they want to install, all within Script Installer. Bot

Hi - are you in the process of setting up a new Bot? Thanks.  7  03:37, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

No, just creating the account so that the name isn't taken by someone else. If I do create one then I'll ask BAG first. Gary King (talk · scripts) 03:38, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

Courtesy Blanking

Under what circumstances is courtesy blanking acceptable? 169.139.19.155 (talk) 20:27, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

Did the person ask you to courtesy blank their pages? Please let me know where they asked that you do this. Ideally, they would post on someone's talk page to ask them to do this. Gary King (talk · scripts) 20:29, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
Ah, I see that the person was blocked a year or two ago. I'm not sure what the guidelines are in regards to courtesy blanking blocked users. Gary King (talk · scripts) 20:31, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
I'm the former user of that account. I checked the policy page for courtesy blanking and there's no request process. I haven't used Wikipedia in over a year and I just want it blanked. How should I do this? By the way, I'm using a public library account right now. 169.139.19.155 (talk) 20:36, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
It should be fine to courtesy blank those pages. I think it's fair to add the __NOINDEX__ to them, etc., especially if the account won't be used anymore. However, I think the sockpuppet tag needs to stay so that it's clear why the account is no longer in use. Gary King (talk · scripts) 20:39, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
What's _NOINDEX_ ? 169.139.19.155 (talk) 20:44, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
Oh, it's part of the template that you added to the page, which tells search engines like Google not to show those pages in its search results. So now your user page won't appear in search results, even when people search for your username. Gary King (talk · scripts) 20:46, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

About vandalism

Is this edit on the left side of the revision vandalism? Wayne Olajuwon chat 21:18, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

No that stuff is not vandalism. I would not revert that, at least not using a program, since as long as something is stated as fact and is possibly true, as it is in that edit, then I think it's best to leave it and let an editor take a look at that specifically. Gary King (talk · scripts) 22:28, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

Okay. Wayne Olajuwon chat 23:00, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

Thanks

Just a quick note to say thanks for the revert to Samsung Group.

Lol, I work for Samsung, was starting to wonder why we suddenly bought the company we use for advertising! Hopefully me explaining to the IP on their talk page that the two companies are separate companies has helped! --5 albert square (talk) 22:44, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

Great Wolf Lodge INC.

I don't have time to hunt through the move log to revert this, I just wanted to inform you that you were in error in making this move; this is not a lodge, i.e. a building/hotel, but a chain of resorts, it is a company; the title needs to be e≈plicit about that, which is why I changed it in the first place. Please consult WP:Companies guidelines about stuff like this in future.Skookum1 (talk) 19:46, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

It says at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (companies): "The legal status suffix of a company [...] is not normally included in the article title." Gary King (talk · scripts) 19:49, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 September newsletter

We are half-way through our final round, entering the home straight.   TonyTheTiger (submissions) leads at the time of writing with 1180 points, immediately followed by   Sasata (submissions) with 1175 points.   Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) closely follows in third place with 1100 points. For those who are interested, data about the finalists has been compiled at Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/finalists, while a list of content submitted by all WikiCup contestants prior to this round has been compiled at Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Submissions. Namespace redirect

Hi - I like the script that you created. I have asked a few fellow spam fighters if they think the "L:" extension that I coded into a copy of your script here would be useful. e.g. "L:spamdomain.com" would help you identify all the pages that link to *.spamdomain.com.

I realize that L: is not a namespace, and that you may want to keep your script focused on that functionality, but since you have the rest of the code already written so nicely I though it might make sense to leverage it. However if you would rather I keep this type of enhancement separate from your code I'll just copy what I need from you (and give you credit) and leave this as a separate spam fighting script.

Let me know what you think. Thanks.  7  02:05, 21 October 2010 (UTC)

Feel free to add new pseudo-namespaces to my script. Gary King (talk · scripts) 05:08, 21 October 2010 (UTC)
Thanks - added UT: for user talk: and also the L: linksearch shortcut. Will also add a cross ref to your script to the spam/vandal fighting sections of the users scripts directory (in addition to where it is currently listed). Regards,  7  01:37, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

Metroid

Can you take a look at Metroid: Other M, copyedit it and the such? It's the only article left for a Metroid titles GT, but I'm still waiting a bit to nominate it for the GA (maybe if VG Project upgrades its assessment, maybe you say it's good enough). igordebraga 13:56, 21 October 2010 (UTC)

It shouldn't have any problems passing a GA review. I've read it over and it looks okay. Also, I haven't played the game yet, which I should get around to soon. Gary King (talk · scripts) 21:30, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

Facebook and Facebook features edits

Hi Gary, Do you have any sources that back up the edits you made to these articles? For example, that there will be a dislike button soon? I can't find a reference for this and it really needs one. Cheers. Dylanfromthenorth (talk) 19:18, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

No, I don't have sources. I didn't write that info, I just moved it from Facebook to Facebook features so that it didn't clutter the former article. Gary King (talk · scripts) 19:57, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
Ah ok...i'm gonna take it out til I can find a source anyways. Ta much. Dylanfromthenorth (talk) 20:11, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 October newsletter

The 2010 WikiCup is over! It has been a long journey, but what has been achieved is impressive: combined, participants have produced over seventy featured articles, over five hundred good articles, over fifty featured lists, over one thousand one hundred "did you know" entries, in addition to various other pieces of recognised content. A full list (which has yet to be updated to reflect the scores in the final round) can be found here. Perhaps more importantly, we have our winner! The 2010 WikiCup champion is   Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), with an unbelievable 4220 points in the final round. Second place goes to   TonyTheTiger (submissions), with 2260, and third to   Casliber (submissions), with 560. Congratulations to our other four finalists –   White Shadows (submissions),   William S. Saturn (submissions),   Staxringold (submissions) and   ThinkBlue (submissions). Also, congratulations to   Sasata (submissions), who withdrew from the competition with an impressive 2685 points earlier in this round.

Prizes will also be going to those who claimed the most points for different types of content in a single round. It was decided that the prizes would be awarded for those with the highest in a round, rather than overall, so that the finalists did not have an unfair advantage. Winning the featured article prize is   Casliber (submissions), for five featured articles in round 4. Winning the good article prize is   Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for eighty-one good articles in round 5. Winning the featured list prize is   Staxringold (submissions), for six featured lists in round 1. Winning the picture and sound award is   Jujutacular (submissions), for four featured pictures in round 3. Winning the topic award is   Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for forty-seven articles in various good topics in round 5. Winning the "did you know" award is   TonyTheTiger (submissions), for over one hundred did you knows is round 5. Finally, winning the in the news award is   Candlewicke (submissions), for nineteen articles in the news in round three.

The WikiCup has faced criticism in the last month – hopefully, we will take something positive from it and create a better contest for next year. Like Wikipedia itself, the Cup is a work in progress, and ideas for how it should work are more than welcome on the WikiCup talk page and on the scoring talk page. Also, people are more than welcome to sign up for next year's competition on the signup page. Well done and thank you to everyone involved – the Cup has been a pleasure to run, and we, as judges, have been proud to be a part of it. We hope that next year, however the Cup is working, and whoever is running it, it will be back, stronger and more popular than ever. Until then, goodbye and happy editing! Starcraft titles up for Good Topic Removal

Hi, I saw that you were a primary contributor to the Starcraft titles good topic, so I thought I should tell you that it is now up for removal as Starcraft 2 is past its deadline to be GA'd. Topic removals are pretty flexible, so if the article gets pushed to GAN soon the topic removal will hang on until it passes/doesn't. --PresN 22:51, 2 December 2010 (UTC)

tagging of OED dictionary

Gary, it was not my quote, but I see no reason to presume it is wrong. In any case if your tagging was intended to be asking the very specific question about edition then I think the tag should have been more specific, like {{Full}}? Anyway, if it helps my OED says

A. adj. Of, pertaining to, or characteristic of Machiavelli, or his alleged principles; preferring expediency to morality; practicing duplicity, esp. in statecraft; astute, cunning, intriguiing 1579 B. sb. A follower of Machiavelli; one who adopts his principles in statecraft or in general conduct.

Main page appearance

Hello! This is a note to let the main editors of this article know that it will be appearing as the main page featured article on December 17, 2010. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/December 17, 2010. If you think it is necessary to change the main date, you can request it with the featured article director, Raul654 (talk · contribs). If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you might change it—following the instructions of the suggested formatting. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page so Wikipedia doesn't look bad. :D Thanks!
