Your recent edits edit

Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. If you can't type the tilde character, you should click on the signature button   located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Substituting basepagename with noincludes edit

I just tweaked placement of the basepagename in uw-ublock and the noincludes. If you place noincludes around just subst:, then on the template page it will display what it is going to do, and when you place it it will substitute the magic word. If you place it around the entire magic word template (<noinclude>{{subst:BASEPAGENAME}}</noinclude>) it will work exactly the same when the template is placed, but it will hide the display of the magic word functioning in the template because the magic word is no longer included. Your edit summary to my uploaded picture states that "see below has a purpose". I'm sorry, but when it comes to uploading images onto wikipedia, I am a noob. I added an FAL license to the image, but is there still something wrong with its current state? If so, then would you know what that fault with my picture is. I put the image on there for display purposes, as it is on a subpage of my main userpage. Thanks. Backtable Speak to meconcerning my deeds. 02:13, 9 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Just to clarify for you, this user was not blocked based on their ip address. They were blocked because their editing pattern strongly suggests that they are a sockpuppet of a banned user. Click here for more information on this type of block. If you want to see an active block log on a particular user, you can just open their contributions and there will be a notice at the top if they are blocked that should include a specific reason, in this case it was the result of a case at WP:SPI. Automated Issue edit

I noticed when you were tagging "Undoer" sockpuppets that you apparently tagged the main account as a sockpuppet of itself. I'm willing to bet that was semi-automated, so perhaps it could be modified to automatically recognize the sockpuppeteer instead and tag the rest as sockpuppets. mechamind90 03:39, 10 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Ah yes, this is related to a semi-automated script that i use for blocking. It supports "Suspected sockpuppet" and "Confirmed sockpuppet", but does not allow you to tag someone as a puppet master directly. Most times i end unblocking and tagging the puppet master manually, but in this case i blocked them all as sock puppets since i was still busy searching if there has been an undoer account without a number. I forgot to switch the template afterwards. But indeed, a "puppetmaster" option would be neat. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 08:49, 10 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Template:Uw-block edit

Wow! I told the User Warning Project elders I was just going to pilot the meta block template on a few block templates, but you've really picked up the ball and run with it. Thanks for all your support with this project. Also, I noticed the creation of Template:Unblock-hard. I hope it's temporary, and can be eventually folded into the metatemplate. The metatemplate should be able to accomodate all the block templates eventually, even for anonymous users, with some more coding. --Bsherr (talk) 18:04, 18 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi, mech. I think it's better to promote the single template Template:uw-block with the indef parameter in the documentation. All of the other specific issue block templates use the indef parameter, so I think it's actually more confusing that the generalized template, and only the generalized template, has a redirect for an indefinite block. The purpose of the parser functions is to reduce the need for multiple templates and redirects, so I think it's counterproductive to promote them. Thoughts? --Bsherr (talk) 04:29, 19 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Great. Sorry about the accidental transclusion. I used braces instead of brackets by mistake (I thought I was in a template for a moment), but you'll see from the history that I saw my error and corrected it right away. Actually, the colon only matters for categories. --Bsherr (talk) 04:36, 19 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

May I speedy G7 Template:uw-indefinite? I think it's an unlikely misnomer, since it doesn't have the word block in it. --Bsherr (talk) 04:50, 19 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • I did it so no bad faith would be assumed. I was actually wondering myself but also considered if others thought it would be useful. mechamind90 04:53, 19 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
    • Thanks. I do think indefblock is a good one. --Bsherr (talk) 05:03, 19 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Mecha, what's the purpose of separating the "one the block expires" portion, please? --Bsherr (talk) 21:45, 20 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Specifically so that the templates can be changed with only one edit as opposed to going into each template one-by-one. mechamind90 21:48, 20 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
    • Right, but why not keep it in uw-block? --Bsherr (talk) 21:50, 20 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
      • I did that too. Since I'm trying to preserve some of the wording used in individual templates, there are occasions where metaback is not possible. mechamind90 21:52, 20 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
        • I meant why transclude it into uw-block. Could you show me which template it doesn't work for? --Bsherr (talk) 21:55, 20 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
          • Oh, it works for all of the ones it's on. However, some of the block templates do not transclude the uw-block itself. mechamind90 21:58, 20 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
            • Ok. Fine for now, but let's see if we can get all the block templates on uw-block eventually. Calling multiple templates increases server load. Thanks for your work. --Bsherr (talk) 22:11, 20 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Copyright runs through the end of the year edit

In all countries I'm familiar with, copyright runs through the end of the year. The works of someone who died in 1940 will leave copyright in life+70 nations on January 1st, 2011.--Prosfilaes (talk) 06:50, 6 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

And it's not life+70 in the US; see United_States_copyright_law#Duration_of_copyright for all the gruesome details, but basically works published more than 95 years ago (again, rounded up to the end of the year) or prior to 1923 (out of copyright before the last extension) are out of copyright in the US.--Prosfilaes (talk) 07:00, 6 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
No, it's not life+70 in the US. Please read The US Copyright Office's circular on the duration of copyright or Cornell University's summary of the duration of US copyright. The only cases where it's life+70 is where the work was first published after 2002.--Prosfilaes (talk) 17:00, 6 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Block no talk edit

Hi Mecha. You're doing great stuff. Thanks for it. I'm concerned, however, that the block-no-talk template and parameter in the metatemplate will usually contravene the blocking policy. The blocking policy states, "editing of the user's talk page should only be disabled in the case of continued abuse of the talk page." Therefore, it's never permissible to disable talk page editing at the time the block is instituted. Doing so will always be subsequent action. I'm concerned that admins seeing the option in this template will be encouraged to enable it from the start. We should instead develop a new template designed to be used subsequent to one of our uw-block templates, similar to Template:Unblock talk-revoked, but without the unblock part. What do you think? --Bsherr (talk) 00:22, 20 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

I can only think of one situation when it might be appropriate to revoke the tp from the start. That's when the reason for the block in the first place is misconduct on the user's tp. We could design a template to address that. --Bsherr (talk) 00:30, 20 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes, that's exactly what I meant by the above. Before they're initially blocked. --Bsherr (talk) 00:33, 20 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Template:Defban edit

Hi Mechamind. I redirected Template:Defban because, as written, it misstates Wikipedia policy. Users who defame are blocked, not immediately banned. Cael Barrow edit

Hi. This article had a PROD, due to expire in two days time, on the ground that what it claimed could not be verified and was a probable hoax. You removed that PROD, and my PROD2, with edit summary "Clearing for BLP-prod." That seems a pointless exercise which will leave this nonsense up for another unnecessary eight days. I am minded to restore the original PROD; the rules say that may be done only if the removal was "clearly not an objection to deletion." So my question is, was your removal of this PROD an objection to deletion on the grounds stated - unverifiable, likely hoax? JohnCD (talk) 10:36, 13 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

On second thoughts, I have restored the original PROD. This would be improper only if your removal was "an objection to deletion" - if so, let me know, and I will dePROD again and probably AfD. JohnCD (talk) 11:29, 13 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

regarding this message you sent to my anon account (please see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:217.129.65.5#January_2011) - the IP is standard by the way, so i'm easily traceable - i'll say the following:

i'm growing ever so tired of vandalism and poor kids who have nothing better to do than ruin other people's work (no one forces me to edit at the site, that's true, i do it because i want to help and be occupied), so some of my summaries leave a lot to be desired (hysterics, aggressiveness, etc), have to work on those substantially, it's against site policy.

Copyright violation edit

This edit was particularly ill advised. I came across this why helping clearing out the copypaste categories and was a little shocked by this edit. Although I had the benefit of someone pointing out where it was copied from to me I can't imagine it would have been too hard to find given that the page was linked from in the article. I know this was some time ago (about a year) and you may not have acted in that way now but, as copyright violations are such a serious issue, I thought it worth dropping you a note, even after all this time, to point out that this was far from the ideal way to deal with a possible copyright violation. (I've now tagged the article as G12 so in case it's deleted before you read this an IP had replaced the text with "All content of padayani page was copied from other website. this was a violation of copy right act. Because the page was removed." and then you restored about 24Ks worth of copyvio text). Dpmuk (talk) 00:06, 9 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • Have you notified the IP of a way that any future edits could not be mistaken for vandalism? I do admit to it being my mistake, though. mechamind90 00:19, 9 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sorry if I came across as blaming you too much - I can struggle to write messages like that at times. Dpmuk (talk) 00:24, 9 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Image uploaded but not yet in full use edit

Hello

You have marked an image file that I have uploaded, File:CoverIssueChemicalScience.jpg, for speedy deletion as it is not yet in use. However, the image is being used on a friend's user page, as they are creating an article to upload. Can you please remove the speedy deletion tag, otherwise I will have to re-upload the file again in a few days when my friend finishes off her article and creates it live in WP? Thank you. 3JSHMerryPippin (talk) 20:07, 19 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image File:Naotlogophoto.png edit

Thanks for uploading File:Naotlogophoto.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Skier Dude2 (talk) 06:31, 2 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Filter 391 edit

I don't recall specifically why I set it to private to be honest. I'm not sure it's necessary; I don't think vandals would actually go and check to see which infobox fields the filter doesn't cover. (In fact, I was thinking of hockey and football players but one of the first edits to be caught was to a porn star's bio, IIRC.) Anyways, should I remove the private setting? Tarkett edit

You have undone an edit on the new Tarkett corporate site, reverting it back to a page previously posted. This page does no longer show actual data and must no longer be featured. The new Tarkett page has been posted on behalf of Tarkett S.A. in France. Please do no longer intervene on this page directly as it is from now on centrally managed from inside our Group. For any comments or suggestions please contact me via my talk page. Many thanks for your understanding and best regards, BBPMB

Calculator icon rename edit

I put your rename on hold for the moment. It looks to me like, in November 2009, Silvergoat uploaded a Windows 7 icon onto a Vista-titled file. This would technically be inappropriate. What I propose, then, is that 1. the File:Calculator_Vista_Icon.png be reverted to the April 2007 upload, 2. the Windows 7 icon be re-uploaded to the file name you suggested (Calculator Windows 7 Icon.png), and 3. the two Windows 7 uploads be tagged for deletion. The Calculator (Windows) article image link should be updated, and if no article requires the Vista icon anymore, the whole thing will be tagged {{db-f5}} as unused non-free. It doesn't make sense to me to move the whole history over to a Vista Icon.png file, because that would mean moving a Windows 7 icon to a Vista Icon file. What I outlined above should be rather simple to implement, and a {{rename}} isn't required. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 16:32, 11 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Category:Jaydan Vinayagan edit

It's not an empty category (well, it is now, because I removed the vandalism the category's creator added to the referenced page), it's a vandalistic template that now no longer contains content. But it was created, probably by the person of the same name, to promote them at the college they attend. 216.93.212.245 (talk) 05:49, 27 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Re: Your userpage edit

It appears to be blank, but the page history says the blank version is 141,816 bytes in size (and another blank one before that was 731,640 bytes)? I don't know what happened unless it's not actually blank when you look at it. If you really want it blank, it should be able to say "empty" for file size.

I also notice there's no banner up above saying "This page is 141 kilobytes long". This really confuses me. mechamind90 22:34, 19 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

It it filled with an invisible, zero-width Unicode control character.
Look at any long page you like, and you'll notice there is no "This page is X kilobytes long" on any of them. This is because the message was removed from MediaWiki eight months ago. Apparently, nobody here has noticed this yet. Gurch (talk) 08:04, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Copy-paste move edit

Back in March you copied the contents of the article Tarkett to User:BBPMB/Tarkett, with the edit summary "Move BBPMB version to userspace." That was a long while ago, and it may be that by now you know why that sort of thing can cause problems, but in case you don't I thought it better to tell you. The article has subsequently been deleted, and it seems likely that the userspace copy may soon be returned to mainspace as an article. Unfortunately, copying and pasting as a way of moving content is not acceptable, as it loses the editing history. The editing history needs to be kept for several reasons, including the need for copyright attribution of past edits. Also, if the userspace copy had been copied back to the article earlier, with the article still undeleted, it could have had the side effect of reverting constructive edits made in the meanwhile to the article. Worse still, sometimes when this sort of thing is done, both the original article and the copy of it are edited, and later the (now changed) copy is merged back to the original article. The article is then edited again. The end result of such a sequence of events can be a hopeless mess in which it is impossible to tell who made what edits, as what appears in the editing history to be an edit by a named editor is in fact a jump from one copy of the article to the other one, including changes which were not made by that editor at all. If an article is to be userfied with a view to being edited and later returned as an article then it should be done by using the "move page" facility, not by copying and pasting. On this occasion no significant problem has been created, as (1) luckily I managed to realise what had happened, an (2) little further editing took place to the article before it was deleted, and the userspace copy was not edited until after that deletion, so if the userfied copy is restored as an article it will not be too difficult to merge the relevant editing histories, but it could easily have been a different story. Images in user notices/warnings with suppressed image link edit

Hi,
I just noticed that you suppressed the image links of the icons in Huggle's and ClueBot NG's (and maybe others?) user notices a while back (e.g. diff).
While that is an improvement in principle, in my understanding suppressing the image link is a license violation if the image is not in the public domain. Could you please revisit those templates and either restore the link or, what I'd prefer, replace the image with one that is in the public domain? I believe the uw-* warnings use PD versions of those images, like File:Ambox warning pn.svg.
Thanks, Amalthea 12:31, 15 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • I won't be finding new images, so the links might as well be restored. mechamind90 17:05, 15 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open! edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:SMWYoshi.png edit

Thank you for uploading File:SMWYoshi.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 22:45, 7 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of File:Steve Smith RG Crop.JPG edit

The file File:Steve Smith RG Crop.JPG has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

orphaned image, low quality

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 01:01, 8 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
