Hi. Thanks for picking up Port City Cricket League 2010. I had been wondering what to do about that (as you may have seen on the GOCE Drive's talk page) and I thought you made a good job of it. Best regards, --Stfg (talk) 21:05, 11 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Some tips to help you out!

Hi Vibhijain, I thought I'd drop a few notes on your talk page with some help on writing articles :o)

First of all, it may be best for you to do a bit of reading, starting with the Wikipedia manual of style, which will give you a lot of information about how Wikipedia prefers its articles to be written. It's not as hard to follow as it might look; quite a bit of the information there probably won't be vital for you at first.

Second, I recommend you make a user sandbox - which is just an area you can use to practise in, and to make notes in, and to get things ready in. If you click this red link: user:Vibhijain/Sandbox, that will let you create that page (it gives you an edit window to start work in). Anything, anywhere, on the help and information pages which gives you an example, try it out in your sandbox until you're familiar with it.

For your article, the next thing you want to do is start collecting as much information as you can about it. Google searches (particularly in Books and Scholar) will be your best friend for this! Once you've found the information, the next most important thing is to start writing up each fact in your own words (very important, this), and make a note at the same time of exactly where that information came from. Build in the references as you go along; I'm going to copy in, down below this, a whole heap of help on doing references, which was produced by one of our best teachers (Chzz).

Here's another place that you'll find incredibly useful - citation templates which you can copy and paste into your sandbox, between <ref></ref> tags; you just fill in the blanks from your sources into the template, and you'll end up with nicely formatted inline citations :o) It all helps. Remember to add a references section to your sandbox (make a new line, and put ==References== on it, and type {{reflist}} on the next line, so that you can see how your citations look as you do them. Remember to save your page often! You don't want to lose your work.

Hopefully this will give you a good start and make life easier for you.

One last thing to keep as a motto: "It's better to write one good, well-referenced, nicely-presented article than it is to create fifty unreferenced one-line stubs!" Pesky (talkstalk!) 13:42, 13 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

How references work

Simple references

These require two parts;

a)
Chzz is 98 years old.<ref> "The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref>

He likes tea. <ref> [http://www.nicecupofteaandasitdown.com Tea website] </ref>
b) A section called "References" with the special code "{{reflist}}";
== References ==
{{reflist}}

(an existing article is likely to already have one of these sections)

To see the result of that, please look at user:chzz/demo/simpleref. Edit it, and check the code; perhaps make a test page of your own, such as user:Vibhijain/reftest and try it out.

Named references

Chzz was born in 1837. <ref name=MyBook>
"The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009.
</ref>

Chzz lives in Footown.<ref name=MyBook/>

Note that the second usage has a / (and no closing ref tag). This needs a reference section as above; please see user:chzz/demo/namedref to see the result.

Citation templates

You can put anything you like between <ref> and </ref>, but using citation templates makes for a neat, consistent look;

Chzz has 37 Olympic medals. <ref> {{Citation
 | last = Smith
 | first = John
 | title = Olympic medal winners of the 20th century
 | publication-date = 2001
 | publisher = [[Cambridge University Press]]
 | page = 125
 | isbn = 0-521-37169-4
}}
</ref>

Please see user:chzz/demo/citeref to see the result.

For more help and tips on that subject, see user:chzz/help/refs.

Here's a little bit of magic which can save you an awful lot of time and effort!

You might want to consider using this tool - (tools:~dispenser/cgi-bin/webreflinks.py) - it makes your life a whole heap easier, by filling in complete citation templates for your links. All you do is install the script on Special:MyPage/common.js, or or Special:MyPage/vector.js, then paste the bare url (without [...] brackets) between your <ref></ref> tabs, and you'll find a clickable link called Reflinks in your toolbox section of the page (probably in the left hand column). Then click that tool. It does all the rest of the work (provided that you remember to save the page! It doesn't work for everything (particularly often not for pdf documents), but for pretty much anything ending in "htm" or "html" (and with a title) it will do really, really well all by itself. For those it can't do by itself, it gives you a pull-down (or up) menu of templates to choose from, which you can then fill in manually. Often the problem is "No title found" - sometimes the title is obvious (especially if it's a pdf), bit, if not, just open the page yourself and choose something appropriate if there's not already a clear title there. Happy editing! Pesky (talkstalk!) 13:42, 13 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Responding to RFCs

Remember that RFCs are part of Dispute Resolution and at times may take place in a heated environment. Please take a look at the relevant RFC page before responding and be sure that you are willing and able to enter that environment and contribute to making the discussion a calm and productive one focussed on the content issue at hand. See also Wikipedia:Requests for comment#Suggestions for responding.

Greetings! You have been randomly selected to receive an invitation to participate in the request for comment on Talk:Christiane Pflug. Should you wish to respond to the invitation, your contribution to this discussion will be very much appreciated! However, please note that your input will carry no greater weight than anyone else's: remember that an RFC aims to reach a reasoned consensus position, and is not a vote. A message from WikiProject Barnstar Awarding

Hello, I am writing from WikiProject Barnstar Awarding. As a member of the project, I thought you may be interested in one of our new feature - a live news feed. Formally, any project news was displayed on the project page and any important messages (like this one) had to be idividualy delivered. We now, however, have a new feature - a news feed. The way this works is by the project having a news page (which can be found [[WP:WikiProject Barnstar Awarding/News|here). Users then place the following on their talk page

{{Wikipedia:WikiProject Barnstar Awarding/News}}

News will then be updated on your talk page (or anywhere else you decided to place this template). Please note that the new messages template will not be shown as news is updated.
We hope that you will help support this new feature and will add the template to your user space. Now this feature is in place, messages adressed to the whole WikiProject will no longer be individualy delivered.

Schools

Hi. In general, although it is a guideline and not a policy, standard accepted procedure is to redirect clearly non notable schools to the article about their locality. This needs no discussion, relievs the backlog at AfD, avoids physical deletion, and leaves the subject open to become an article again if it can later be proven to be notable. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 07:33, 16 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Guild of Copy Editors November 2011 backlog elimination drive update

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors November 2011 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter.

Participation: We have had 46 people sign up for this drive so far, and 28 have copy edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't joined, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: We are making great progress in our goal of clearing out the oldest articles (April, May, and June 2010) from the queue. There are 122 articles left in those categories, which compares very favorably with the 281 that were present at the close of the September drive. We have reduced the 2010 backlog by 184 articles so far.

Coordinator elections: The term of our second tranche of coordinators will be running out at the end of the year, and we will be accepting nominations for new coordinators early in December. The election will likely run in the last two weeks of December. Please consider helping out by nominating yourself or someone else in the Guild as one of our coordinators. The commitment is for a six-month term. Thanks.

Eastern Railway Zone (India)

Hello! I recently reviewed an article that you copyedited. Although you did a good copyedit, I found a few things that you missed. You can see my changes at [1]. Remember to keep an eye out for proper comma placement (and especially make sure that, when a comma is used before an "and" in a list, that the practice is retained throughout the entire article) as well as standard date writing (day, month, year or month, day, year- keep it the same throughout the article). Also watch out for strange capitalization mistakes that are sometimes scattered in articles.--Slon02 (talk) 05:21, 23 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Non-free image in Karthi

Hi, you reviewed the article on Karthi and told the nominator to add an image. When no free image was found you told him to use a non-free image. You must have forgot, the Good article criteria require that "valid fair use rationales" are provided for images. For a non-free image of a living person like Karthi that is impossible, because it automatically fails WP:NFCC#1, the criterion that no free equivalent could reasonably be found or created. In fact, no article on a living person should have a non-free image for identification purposes because of this Wikipedia policy, and you will find that they don't. Please be more careful in the future. Thanks Hekerui (talk) 06:45, 23 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Your wikification

Hi there Vibhajain, I'm here to talk about a couple of articles you wikfied for the December Wikification drive today. I was asked to look over your work, and so I've checked up on what you've done so far. Your first article looks good, but there are a couple things about the second one you wikified that could be fixed. In the "On Campus" section, you linked the three schools that the blueprint is based off, but two of them (Franklin High School and Pleasant Grove High School) lead to disambiguation pages, so that doesn't really help much. Please make sure you follow your links, make sure they go where you want them to go, and use piped links ("[[Example page|Text that will be shown]]") if needed. In this case, its pretty easy to see that the correct links would be Franklin High School (Elk Grove, California) and Pleasant Grove High School (California), as both of these are also in the Elk Grove District.

Hans Andersag, your third article (diff here), has something else related to the link destinations. You linked Chloroquine and Resochin, which seems good, since they are technical-sounding terms. However, had you clicked them, you would have seen that Resochin is actually just a redirect to Chloroquine, and so a link is not needed. Furthermore, linking his wife's name (and even the name of the stadium in the other article) seems necessary.

I hope this helps, and that you take these tips to heart since you have the potential to be a great editor. Thanks, and don't hesitate to leave me a note if you have any other questions. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 00:37, 2 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the tips. They were pretty helpful and i will try my best to imply them while wikifying articles. Thanks again. :) ♛♚★Vaibhav Jain★♚♛ Talk Email 10:43, 2 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
I appreciate to accpeting my advice, but please, please, please use it. Here you wikified a school and linked the name of the principal and two assistants. Those aren't good to link anyway, since its almost certain that a school principal isn't notable enough for WP, but two of the links led to totally different people. Please make sure you take the extra five minutes to check your links, and if you'd prefer that I just help check each article after you and you maybe only take 1/2 credit for those, I'd be more then happy to. This makes it more likely that all nominations are reviewed in a timely manner. You may add your nomination before you undertake a review, but before it is approved, please review another editor's nomination and indicate at your nomination which you have reviewed, and (if you know how to do this) provide a link to the diff for your review. GOCE November 2011 Backlog elimination drive progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors November 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We would like to thank all who participated in this drive. Here is the end-of-drive report.

Participation

There were 48 editors who signed-up for this drive, of which 35 participated. Thank you to everyone who helped reduce the size of the backlog!

Progress report

During the drive, we reduced the backlog by 232 articles, or by about 6%. This is a two percent increase from our September drive, when we copy edited 4% of the backlog. We were successful in our primary goal of clearing the oldest three months—March, April, and May 2010—from the queue. Thanks to all who helped copy edit these difficult articles. Thus far we have reduced the copy edit backlog by 5086 articles, or by about 61%. End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here.

Coordinator election

The term of our second tranche of coordinators has run out, and we will be accepting nominations from December 5, 00:01 UTC to December 15, 23:59 UTC. If you or any other member of the Guild of Copy Editors wishes to be a coordinator, add your name to this page along with a statement describing why you believe you should be a coordinator for the Guild. You must be able to commit to a six month term. Thanks!

I trying to improve Ahalya to FA status and have started a PR Wikipedia:Peer_review/Ahalya/archive1. I request to give your valued comments to improve the article to FA status on the PR or the talk. Thanks a lot. --Redtigerxyz Talk 17:58, 12 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Works of Rambhadracharya

I closed the FLC as unsuccessful because it did not have enough consensus for promotion. The list had been at FLC for over two months, and in that time it gained one support, from Redtigerxyz. One editor giving support isn't going to be enough for a list to get a consensus for promotion, which is needed for an FLC to close successfully. As one of the closers, I tried my best to be patient and give the list time to be reviewed, but a list can't stay at FLC indefinitely, and unfortunately there wasn't enough support in the end to say the community favored promotion. My best advice is to ask The Rambling Man if his comments were adequately addressed; if so, feel free to renominate the list once your current FLC runs its course. Best of luck with the list.
