Wikipedia:WikiProject Pittsburgh activity and membership

Wikipedia:WikiProject Pittsburgh is rolling out some new features (see our discussions at WT:PITTSBURGH). We are also trying to determine how many members are active, and interested in contributing to Pittsburgh content or coming to our real life meetups to discuss Wikipedia in general. I see you are listed in Category:WikiProject Pittsburgh members but you have not added yourself to our member listing. If you could go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Pittsburgh/Members and add your to the active or semi-active group (depending on your interest in Pittsburgh issue and overall activity) groups, this would be great. Hopefully in a near future you'll also receive our first newsletter with various information on what we have been doing, and what useful tools are available (note that this newsletter and many other Pittsburgh-related notices will be automated and send only to editors who have added themselves to our members page). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 20:24, 26 June 2011 (UTC) Also, you may want to update your wikiproject members list to your new account name, so that automated messages are not directed at the obsoleted page.

July 2011 Newsletter for WikiProject United States

The WikiProject United States Newsletter
July 2011

Scope and Mission of WikiProject United States

Welcome to WikiProject United States on the English Wikipedia! We are a project dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to the United States, with an emphasis on subjects with regional and national significance. This project was formed to coordinate the development of United States related articles and help maintain the United States Portal. Some project goals are to help list and categorize United States related articles, develop quality standards for articles and build templates that help users browse the articles that fall under this project. This project also provides a place for Wikipedians to share information and resources regarding improvements to United States related articles. Here, editors can ask for help with certain articles and bring otherwise overlooked articles and problems, to the attention of other editors. For more information of the role of WikiProjects, check out WikiProject guidelines.

Articles of note

This section highlights US related content that has been promoted to Featured Status in the last month:
Note:Articles pertain to one or more of the WikiProjects relating to United States topics but not necessarily WikiProject United States.

Current statistics

Golden Gate Bridge at night
Project news

Its been another very busy month and the momentum of the project continues to move us forward.

  • Two more projects have joined the group. WikiProject U.S. Presidents brings more than 350 key articles, approximately 34 of which being GA or better. WikiProject US State Legislatures also joined with 398 articles of which 10 are GA or better.
  • Discussions continue to include several more WikiProjects to the family of supported projects. Some of the current discussions are:
  1. WikiProject Asian Americans - This has been finalized and will be added to the Template and the family in the next few weeks
  2. WikiProject Franco-Americans - This has been finalized and will be added to the Template and the family in the next few weeks
  3. WikiProject American Old West - The discussion is located here.
  4. WikiProject South Carolina - The discussion is located here.
  5. WikiProject West Virginia - The discussion is located here.
  6. WikiProject FBI - The discussion is located here.
  7. WikiProject United States History - The discussion is located here. This has been open for a while and some members of the History project are opposed to it so this one probably will not be added to the supported projects list.
  8. WikiProject presidential elections - The discussion is located here. This has been open for a while and some members of the presidential elections project are opposed to it so this one probably will not be added to the supported projects list.
  • WikiProject Library of Congress was moved from its location on subpages under WikiProject United States to its own location to help increase its visibility. We also merged WikiProject Library of Congress country studies into WikiProject Library of Congress in order to better utilize the information on both projects. The country studies project is currently linked to the Library of Congress project but over the next few weeks the projects will be fully merged.
  • It has been suggested that WikiProject United States start using a B class assessment checklist to better identify which articles need what kind of work. That discussion can be found here
  • As of July 1 2011 WikiProject United States has Exceeded 100, 000 pieces of content. This includes 9 projects, 624+ Featured items, 61,000+ articles and 20+ portals.
Portals and portal related content
Collaboration
The collaboration for July 2011 is the United States dollar

Last month we had a very successful improvement to the United States Bill of Rights article. Although we didn't achieve our goal of getting the article to meet GA requirements we made a lot of improvements to the articles.

The goal for July is to improve the article for the United States dollar. This article needs a lot of work including expansion, citations, structure, grammar and general cleanup.

There are currently three collaboration candidates for August:

  1. Historiography of the United States (if not selected it will be removed for August so this is its last chance)
  2. Democratic Party (United States) - Currently has four votes so if things stay the way they are it will be the next collaboration.
  3. Hope Diamond - Currently only has 2 votes.

Some other possibilities for future collaborations are: Camp David, White House, The Star-Spangled Banner, Space Shuttle program, Charles Lindbergh, United States Postal Service, Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Great Depression in the United States.

If one of these sounds like a good candidate feel free to add it to the list of candidates.

Future improvements
  • Adding infoboxes to the articles that need them
  • Assessing the articles that need it
  • Adding the articles that are still missing
  • A major redesign of the newsletter which will make it easier to update, make it more attractive and leave a smaller footprint on the talk pages

If any of these sound interesting to you please feel free to help out.

Got a suggestion? A correction? Something you'd like to see included in a future issue? Drop a note at the Tip Line with your ideas!

To stop receiving this newsletter, or to receive it in a different format, please list yourself in the appropriate section here.

Question aboutu Geo Coordinates

Sorry to be a bother but I had a question about geo coordinates I was hoping you might be able to answer. I would like to add a category and parameter to the WikiProject United States banner for needing coordinates. Do you know how to do this or have an example of a project that does this? --Kumioko (talk) 23:37, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

I checked, and there is already one. - Presidentman talk·contribs Random Picture of the Day (Talkback) 00:45, 17 August 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for letting me know . found the category the other day. I thought you were busy and kept digging till I found it. Sorry I didn't let you know. I added a parameter to the WPUS banner for |needs-goecoord= and pointed it to that category. I also did this for all of the supported projects although I had to create a lot of the categories because they didn't already exist. --Kumioko (talk) 01:03, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

Naoto Kan

I reversed your move of my paragraph about Kan's resignation plans. You moved it into the paragraph before the final one, leaving a July development unrelated directly to the resignation as the final career paragraph. I think maintaining chronological order in a big section for such a significant event is important. Quick-update readers will scan to see if there's anything elaborating on the unfootnoted line in the introduction, way above. I in fact first thought you'd just removed my paragraph, and don't think I'd be alone in concluding July was the final event chronicled, the way you left it. I brought an earlier (Aug. 10) sentence, adding "2011" to it, down to start my (augmented, final) paragraph; and I added a link to the article covering the succession election to complete it. I hope you can concur but would be glad to hear a different rationale. Thanks and cheers. Swliv (talk) 23:10, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

I had just thought that it would make more sense to put your paragraph in with the other paragraph about pressure on Kan to resign, however, I see your reasoning and am inclined to agree. - Presidentman talk·contribs Random Picture of the Day (Talkback) 00:52, 28 August 2011 (UTC)

September 2011 Newsletter for WikiProject United States

The WikiProject United States Newsletter
September 2011

This section highlights US related content that has been promoted to Featured Status in the last 2 months:
Note:Articles pertain to one or more of the WikiProjects relating to United States topics but not necessarily WikiProject United States.

Project news

The months of July and August proved to be extremely busy months and we had several very important achievements. Although some projects have declined or don't wish to be supported by WikiProject United States we added about 25 more projects to the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States and will be using the United States banner. These projects include:

As well as the following State projects

We are continuing to talk with the other United States related WikiProjects to determine interest in being supported by the project and having a closer collaboration with our project. By the end of September we will have contacted nearly all of them to determine which ones are active or inactive and which ones want to be supported by the project.

Below are some interesting things that have taken place of the last couple months:

  • EdoDodo was kind enough to volunteer his bot, DodoBot to help with the assessment of the projects articles as well as tagging additional articles for the project. The bot has also been busy with replacing the supported projects banners and replacing it with the WikiProject United States/Supported projects banners.
  • Census boilerplate - There is a discussion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about using a standard boilerplate for Census infomormation in articles here
  • Project self assessment - The WMF has asked us if we would be willing to do a self assessment of the project to see the things we are doing good and bad here. I think this would be a good opportunity for us to look at what we have done the last year and help focus our efforts for the next year or more.
  • Wikipedia loves libraries - If you haven't noticed the large message flashing across the top of your watchlist there is an event coming up called Wikipedia Loves Libraries with scheduled meetups throughout the country. All Wikipedians are invited to attend.
  • NRHP Washington project - WikiProject National Register of Historic Places has a discussion about a project to "get a fully-illustrated list for List of RHPs in DC and get the red-links out by Wikimania-in-Washington next August". If this sounds interesting to you check out the discussion here.
  • As of September 1, 2011 WikiProject United States has Exceeded 140, 000 pieces of content. This includes 38 projects, 650+ Featured items, 71,000+ articles and over 25 portals.
  • We have made major modifications to the WikiProject template adding functionality to track articles needing infoboxes, references, images, maps and Geographical coordinates. Additionally we have added functionality to display to do lists and comments for articles as well as WikiProject to do lists.
  • We created a WikiProject to do list for each project supported. Some still need to be filled out though so any help in filling in these templates would be greatly appreciated.
  • We made sure all supported projects support the full range of Quality and importance categories. This required many, many categories to be created.
  • We made sure all supported projects had a Recognized content subpage. We still need to make sure they are updated correctly and visible on the project pages.
Portals and portal related content
  • The United States portal recently failed its attempt at featured portal status due to some missing anniversary information and some other minor issues. We are going to continue to improve the portal over the next couple months and resubmit.
  • Portal:Michigan Highways was promoted to Featured portal.
  • Portal:Supreme Court of the United States is undergoing a portal peer review here and looks to be doing very well
  • Portal:Houston is under Featured portal review here and after an almost complete overhaul by WhisperToMe it looks very likely that the portal will retain its Featured portal status.
Collaboration
The collaboration for September 2011 is the Chicago

Last month we saw some modest improvements to the Space Shuttle Program article but every little bit helps.

There are currently three collaboration candidates for August:

  1. Hope Diamond - Currently only has 2 votes.

Some other possibilities for future collaborations are: Camp David, White House, The Star-Spangled Banner, Charles Lindbergh, United States Postal Service, Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Great Depression in the United States.

In the near future several of the tasks for the Collaboration will be automated via a bot thanks to ErrantX. This will simplify the process of notifying editors and WikiProjects about collaboration candidates and selections that pertain to them.

  • Fill in To do tasks for all supported projects
  • Make sure that all projects have Article alerts, Recognized content, popular pages and Project Watchlists.
  • Recruit for the projects. There are lots of editors working on the articles already. We just need to get them interested in the projects again.

If any of these sound interesting to you please feel free to help out.

Texas A&M >>> SEC

Greetings, Presidentman.

I have just reverted your recent change to the Southeastern Conference, specifically your change to the membership timeline that shows Texas A&M as a current member of the conference. Texas A&M has applied to join the SEC, and the conference has approved its application to join conditionally, subject to the remaining members of the Big XII waiving any potential legal claims against A&M and the SEC. As I am sure you know already, Baylor and two or three other schools have not yet waived such claims and are holding A&M hostage to better leverage Texas and Oklahoma to stay in the Bog XII. Bottom line: A&M is not a current member of the SEC, and the condition of its acceptance as a member has not yet been satisfied. You will note that there is already a section within the article which discusses potential SEC expansion in 2012, including the politics of A&M's possible/probable membership in the SEC. Please do not edit the SEC article to again indicate that A&M is a current member unless and until there are reliable and verifiable sources for current membership that you can include in a footnote per WP:RS and WP:V. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a predictor of future events per WP:CRYSTAL. Thanks. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 17:36, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks, NRHP photos

Dear Prez,

Thanks for being the first to contribute to the NRHP photo contest. Perhaps the rules are not as clear as they should be, but I interpret "Photos must be taken and uploaded during the given time period" to mean "taken by you." I'll remove the one in DC and let Eyabe decide about Georgia. And if he disagrees with me, please let me know and I'll reconsider. Thanks for your understanding on this.

Sincerely,

Just a reminder

The Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/Fall 2011 Photo Contest closes in a few minutes. I was sorry not to see many people take up your challenges, but thanks for taking the time to pose the challenges. I'll ask that you tie up any loose ends over the next couple of days (perhaps a note on the contest page). Thanks again. Smallbones (talk) 04:41, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

Maine

Thanks for the win by default. I'm sorry I didn't take more pictures up there this summer—I was a bit disorganized. I'll try to do more legwork before going and pick up some more things from the Blue Hill peninsula next year. Choess (talk) 03:44, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

Just a note

When you're creating junction/exit lists, if you're using the colored lines generated by the |type= in the templates, you need to be using {{legendRJL}} instead of {{jctbtm}} at the bottom of the table. The reason is that legendRJL has the color key for the meanings behind the colors, that's required by MOS:RJL for junction lists. If the tables don't have any colors, jctbtm is the appropriate template to use. Imzadi 1979  01:13, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

I stumbled onto your Virtual drives page. You have a licensing problem with all of the Signmaker images on that page. Namely, you don't have permission to release them into the public domain. In fact, the "Legalese" section at SignMaker Central specifically says, and I quote: "SignMaker and TD71 are free for noncommercial use." That isn't exactly compatible with a release into the public domain, since there is the implied restriction that using files from the program for commercial purposes is not permitted. As a second concern, WP:NOTMYSPACE kind of limits what you can do in your user space, and I think the page fails that policy, so you probably should just tag the graphics for deletion on Commons, and tag the pages to be removed.

Project news

As with the previous few months, October and November have continued to see a lot of activity with the project. We have completed determining what US related projects are interested in collaboration and for the most part the projects now represented on the project page should be the last of them. From this point forward we should see much fewer projects being added although we continue to build relationships with other US related projects and look forward to those expanding further in the future. We are continuing to integrate and standardize some of the functionality of the supported projects and it may be another month or two before the process of setting up these projects is complete.

Events and meetups
  • In case you haven't noticed the big banner on the top of your watchlist you are invited to participate in the Wikimedia DC Fine Art Edit-a-Thon and GLAM-WIKI Meetup on Saturday, December 17, 2011 in Washington, D.C.!
  • There is another DC meetup scheduled for sometime in January TBD. If you are interested in attending the information can be found here.
  • In 2012, Wiki Loves Monuments will come to the United States. If you are interested in photography or in monuments this might be an interesting event for you. More information is available here.

  • Wikimania 2012 is coming fast. As some may have heard, Washington, D.C., was selected as the 2012 site for Wikimania, and we're down to about 215 days. If you are interested in attending, more information can be found here.
Portals and portal related content

The United States portal is getting very close to Featured portal status. With the new push to get a space on the main page for featured portals I would like to start devoting some time to getting this one built up. If anyone would like to help out with this leave a message on the talk page here.

In addition to Portal:United States Portal:Supreme Court of the United States was recently promoted to featured status as well. We have a lot of portals related to the United States that could be promoted relatively quickly and with minimal work. If you have any recommendations for a portal that you would like to get promoted please let the project know.

Collaboration
The collaboration for December 2011 is the Hope Diamond

The collaboration candidate for last month was 99 Percent Declaration with more than 500 edits.

There are currently three collaboration candidates for December: The Star-Spangled Banner, Great Depression in the United States and the United States Postal Service

Some other possibilities for future collaborations can be found on the collaborations talk page and are: Camp David, the White House, Charles Lindbergh and Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. If one of these sounds like a good candidate please add it to the list of candidates or add your own if you have some ideas about an article that would make a good collaboration.

Future improvements
  • Adding infoboxes to the articles that need them
  • Assessing the articles that need it
  • Adding the articles that are still missing
  • A major redesign of the newsletter which will make it easier to update, make it more attractive and leave a smaller footprint on the talk pages

USRD importance assessments

Not sure if you knew, but in general, here's how USRD articles are assessed for importance:

Top - Usually only the state lists, like "List of US Highways in X State"
High - Interstate, US Highways
Mid - State highways
Low - County highways
NA - anything that doesn't fall into the FA, A, GA, B, C, Start, Stub, List categories. The banner should do this for us.

Hope this helps! –Fredddie 18:14, 17 December 2011 (UTC)

Some writing tips for highway articles

In no particular order:

  • The word junction isn't a verb; it's a noun. Two roads may intersect at a junction, but they don't junction.
  • Roads don't have opinions, so they can't agree with each other. The verb concur means agree, so I think you want to say that two roads run concurrently. As a benefit to our readers, link it similar to [[concurrency (road)|runs concurrently]] so they can be click the link to our concurrency article.
  • If a highway designation has a space in it, like SR 135, you should use a non-breaking space, which is entered using the code  . That way, if the designation falls at the end of a line, the SR can't appear at the end of one line and the 135 is left hanging out alone at the start of the next line. The same thing goes for county roads (CR) and US Highways (US). Do this in prose and the junction list table.
  • The first time you mention a highway designation of each type, spell out the full name and add the abbreviation in parentheses afterwards so that readers understand that US 23 is an abbreviation for US Route 23. (Yes, I used a non-breaking space to join the word Route to the 23. For the same reasons as my last point.
  • In dealing with references, we have {{cite map}} for general map citations, which accepts a publisher and a cartography source. The GDOT functional classification maps are published by GDOT using cartography by the Office of Transportation Data. FHWA is a part of USDOT, and might have helped GDOT prepare them, but they didn't create or publish them. Even if they got credit, they aren't two separate things because FHWA is a part of USDOT.
  • Any time you're copying a title of a work, for a citation or even a mention in the prose, reduce ALLCAPS to Title Case or Sentence Case. FUNCTIONAL CLASSIFICATION MAP - BERRIEN COUNTY, GEORGIA then becomes Functional Classification Map: Berrien County, Georgia.
  • In the notes column, can you give directional indications for some things? Which terminus is it: the northern, southern, eastern or western? It's not necessary to mention the termini of the subject of the article.
  • Which end of the concurrency is it? Remember that except for one-way streets, roadways run in both directions, and it's purely arbitrary to write the articles west-to-east or south-to-north. Even on a north–south road like U.S. Route 41 in Michigan, the concurrency with M-28 (Michigan highway) runs east–west. The junction in Harvey, Michigan, would then be the "Eastern end of the M-28 concurrency", and the one in Covington, Michigan, would be the "Western end of the M-28 concurrency".
  • If you continue writing about highways, it's always helpful to give the reader some idea of what's around the roadway. Are these cities big or small? Does the road pass through forests, farms, desert, river valleys? If you use a reference to the satellite view in Google Maps for the overall highway (like the cites to Google for lengths I've seen you use) then you can add that detail. Look through the USRD FA-, A-. or GA-Class articles for ideas on what makes a good RD section for a roadway article.

I hope that you find these suggestions helpful. If you have questions, let me know. We appreciate efforts to improve the articles for Georgia and other states where we are lacking regular editors. Imzadi 1979  01:10, 14 December 2011 (UTC)

Something else I thought about after I wrote this, but can you spell out road names? Not all of our readers speak or read English as their first language, so some abbreviations can be confusing. For instance, Dr. is also short for doctor and St. is also used for Saint. In Italian, S. is the abbreviation for saint, which can also cause potential confusion. Yes, we abbreviate highway designations, but we also explicitly define what that abbreviation is in parentheses like I mentioned in my fourth bullet point above. The AP Stylebook only recommends abbreviating street names when giving full addresses, and spelling out the full name when talking about the road in general, which is a good practice. Hi. When you recently edited Virginia State Route 337, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Elizabeth River (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

DE 20

Hello, I've reverted your edits to DE 20 because the route does in fact end at DE 54. The road was officially truncated to DE 54 and the DelDOT log has not been updated to reflect this. Also, DE 14 no longer goes to Fenwick Island, this road became DE 1 years ago. Dough4872 19:33, 25 December 2011 (UTC)
