Guideline and policy news

• There are a number of new or changed speedy deletion criteria, each previously part of WP:CSD#G6:

1. G14 (new): Disambiguation pages that disambiguate only zero or one existing pages are now covered under the new G14 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-disambig}}; the text is unchanged and candidates may be found in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion as unnecessary disambiguation pages.
2. R4 (new): Redirects in the file namespace (and no file links) that have the same name as a file or redirect at Commons are now covered under the new R4 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-redircom}}; the text is unchanged.
3. G13 (expanded): Userspace drafts containing only the default Article Wizard text are now covered under G13 along with other drafts (discussion). Such blank drafts are now eligible after six months rather than one year, and taggers continue to use {{db-blankdraft}}.

• The Wikimedia Foundation now requires all interface administrators to enable two-factor authentication.
• Members of the Bot Approvals Group (BAG) are now subject to an activity requirement. After two years without any bot-related activity (e.g. operating a bot, posting on a bot-related talk page), BAG members will be retired from BAG following a one-week notice.

Technical news

• Starting on December 13, the Wikimedia Foundation security team implemented new password policy and requirements. Privileged accounts (administrators, bureaucrats, checkusers, oversighters, interface administrators, bots, edit filter managers/helpers, template editors, et al.) must have a password at least 10 characters in length. All accounts must have a password:

1. At least 8 characters in length
2. Not in the 100,000 most popular passwords (defined by the Password Blacklist library)
3. Different from their username

User accounts not meeting these requirements will be prompted to update their password accordingly. More information is available on MediaWiki.org.

• Blocked administrators may now block the administrator that blocked them. This was done to mitigate the possibility that a compromised administrator account would block all other active administrators, complementing the removal of the ability to unblock oneself outside of self-imposed blocks. A request for comment is currently in progress to determine whether the blocking policy should be updated regarding this change.
• {{Copyvio-revdel}} now has a link to open the history with the RevDel checkboxes already filled in.

• Following the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: AGK, Courcelles, GorillaWarfare, Joe Roe, Mkdw, SilkTork.

Miscellaneous

• Accounts continue to be compromised on a regular basis. Evidence shows this is entirely due to the accounts having the same password that was used on another website that suffered a data breach. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately.
• Around 22% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 20% in June 2018. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless of whether you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

Question

I had another question about editing. There is something I want to try and do, but I'm not exactly sure how to do it. I have had five years of schooling where most of my schoolwork was in French... so, in general, I understand it quite well. I don't think I'm confident enough in my writing ability in French itself, but I would probably be really good at translating things into English. The problem is, I'm not sure if there's anything in particular that I have to do to do that. Or if I should just wait until I have more experience on Wikipedia for something like that. Also, I have started a draft article. There's still a lot I would like to do with it, but I had some questions related to that, too. 1. How do you reference books when citing? 2. I might not be able to find an exact date for when she was born. So far, all of my sources reference 1876 - but not an exact month or day. 3. How do I fill in infoboxes? I found a template that seems like it should work, but I'm not sure whether or not I'm using it correctly. I'm sorry for asking so many questions. Hi Clovermoss and thanks for reaching out! I'll try to answer your questions the best I can. For your first one, yeah, you can translate a page like that. This tells you pretty much everything you need to know, so I highly recommend you read through that, but I'll highlight the most important parts here. The first is that you must credit the source article. To do this, add Content in this edit is translated from the existing French Wikipedia article at [[:fr:Exact name of French article]]; see its history for attribution to your creation summary AND add the following coding to the talk page:

{{translated page|fr|[NAMEOFPAGEINFRENCH]|version=[The version identifier of the revision of the source page from which the translation was derived]|insertversion=[The version identifier of the revision of the target page into which the translation was placed]}}

See here for more details on how to find the last 2 parameters. Another important highlight is that you should not be overinfluenced by the style of the original article and if it contains unsourced material, nonsense, etc., it should be removed from the English version if possible. Again, the link I provided contains a lot more details.

Now, for your next post: 1. you can use {{cite book}}. 2. that's fine, not everyone does, just mention that she was born in 1876 in the infobox; the fact that the birth date is not known is not a reason to not create an article. :-) 3. the infobox you have looks fine to me. @Clovermoss: I just made a few minor copy-edits to it, but here are some other suggestions I'd have:

• Change the list format to running prose, as that's generally preferred on Wikipedia articles
• Cite your references inline, so that each piece of information can be verified individually
• Add her death date of 26 April 1925

Of course you may be working on these as you did say this is a work in progress. You could also expand this article a lot, as there's much information available online. If you'd like, I'd be happy to make more substantial edits to it, rather than just minor copy-edits. This article has a lot of potential and I am quite surprised Hughes never had an article already! Thank you once again! The list thing was more of a temporary situation as I wasn't sure how (at least at the moment) I was going to create running pose. It was kind of an in-between step, I guess. And yes, I'm also surprised Katherine Hughes didn't already have an article. I took a look at your user page yesterday and wondered what the userbox that said "make women blue" meant, and it sure is an interesting wikiproject. I went to the Canada section under redlinks and picked a random red link to try and research for notability (which was Katherine Hughes). It seems that there is a well-known modern actress for the same name, so Google's results probably show the most information asked on them unless you clarify stuff like political activist or dates. By the way, I'm trying to figure out how those inline citations work when citing the same source multiple times. @Clovermoss: So basically, in most inline citations you use the coding <ref>Reference here</ref>, right? Well, when you want to use a reference multiple times you use the following coding for the first instance instead: <ref name="[nameofref]">Reference here</ref> and when you want to use that ref again, you'd use <ref name="[nameofref]"/>. Make sure you use that exact coding because sometimes including or not including a simple slash will completely change the results. Does that help? See WP:REFNAME for more details. Hi Clovermoss. I'd be happy to see what I can do; I'm a bit more busy now that Christmas break is over but I'm sure I'd be able to find myself some time to work on this. For articles like this, it is difficult to just discuss every individual change, so a better idea may be for me to write a version of the page in my sandbox that's like yours but uses running prose instead, and then you can see what you think. Photo Removal?

Hello, I am the inventor and owner of the product, Equicizer. I started a wiki page for this product and tried to add a photo in. I thought I took the correct steps to upload the photo and add it the wiki page. The photo got taken down with the following comment, "14:55, 1 January 2019‎ SkyGazer 512 (talk | contribs)‎ . . (5,482 bytes) -130‎ . . (Reverted good faith edits by Frankie Lovato: Not sure what you're trying to do here, the template is meant to be used for the "Account Creation Improvement Project to welcome and orient new users", it doesn't belong in a mainspace article. I'm afraid I don't understand why the photo was taken down. I'm not extremely tech savy so any clarification would be appreciated.

Hi Frankie Lovato, thanks for reaching out! I'd be happy to try to explain further. :)

So basically, you inserted the image format incorrectly. Because of the way you inserted it, it changed the whole page completely and made it look like a user page instead of a mainspace page. Compare the look of the page when you edited it to the current look. This is because instead of using the standard image format, you added the template {{new user bar}} with your file in the image parameter. We don't want that template; that's designated for userpages and shouldn't be placed in an article. I didn't realize you were trying to put an image in but used the wrong template instead or I would've corrected the image format instead of reverted your edit, so please accept my apologies for that error of mine.

Now, to get to the actual point, all you have to do to add the file is simply add [[File:Equicizer Mechanical Horse Riding Simulator.jpg|thumb|Equicizer Mechanical Horse Riding Simulator]] somewhere in the page, wherever you want it to display. No templates, no curly brackets (although of course normal brackets are still needed), no parameters, just that. It's a fairly straightforward change so I've already done it for you as you can see here. I've placed the image at the top of the page, but you can move it to wherever you would like.

There is something else to consider, based on what you said in your post. Because you are the inventor of Equicizer, you have a conflict of interest with the subject. This page explains in detail what a conflict of interest is, what to do if you have one, etc. In short, you should not edit a page that you have a conflict of interest with. Instead, propose edits on the talk page using {{request edit}}. This section of the page I linked contains more specific details on how to do this as well as other options.

One thing that I was going to mention in my original reply but neglected to, is that when requesting edits and making edits, especially ones where you have a conflict of interest, it's important to remember that all material must be supported by reliable sources. Knowing something from personal experience is not good enough; it can only be included in an article if the information can be found in a published, reliable source. That source should be cited in the article so that readers can verify the information. This page explains more details about this. • A request for comment is currently open to reevaluate the activity requirements for administrators.
• Administrators who are blocked have the technical ability to block the administrator who blocked their own account. A recent request for comment has amended the blocking policy to clarify that this ability should only be used in exceptional circumstances, such as account compromises, where there is a clear and immediate need.
• A request for comment closed with a consensus in favor of deprecating The Sun as a permissible reference, and creating an edit filter to warn users who attempt to cite it.

Technical news

• A discussion regarding an overhaul of the format and appearance of Wikipedia:Requests for page protection is in progress (permalink). The proposed changes will make it easier to create requests for those who are not using Twinkle. The workflow for administrators at this venue will largely be unchanged. Additionally, there are plans to archive requests similar to how it is done at WP:PERM, where historical records are kept so that prior requests can more easily be searched for.

Miscellaneous

• Voting in the 2019 Steward elections will begin on 08 February 2019, 14:00 (UTC) and end on 28 February 2019, 13:59 (UTC). The confirmation process of current stewards is being held in parallel. You can automatically check your eligibility to vote.

Draft update and some other stuff

Hey. I had some ideas for converting some of my ideas into running prose like we discussed earlier, but I was wondering if there was anything you came up that I should consider first before expanding the Katherine Hughes draft. I also wanted to let you know that I started a draft on another article and I was kind of wondering if you could offer some general advice/comments about what you think. It isn't a biographical article, it's about a convention centre that I'm fairly certain would be considered notable. I think the state that draft article is in right now is kind of short, but I have some plans for how I might expand it. On top of all that, I posted a question in the Teahouse earlier (as I thought it was more of a general question that could be answered faster but it hasn't had an answer so far, so if you had any advice on that I would be incredibly grateful). @Clovermoss: Honestly, I think that if you have ideas for the draft, you should just incorporate them and go for it, as there's really no reason you shouldn't. Users can always revise your ideas if needed and you can always revert them if needed. Also, it's a draft, so it's okay if you don't think it's well-written or well-sourced at a current point in time, as long as, of course, it isn't spam, a copyvio, or anything extreme like that. So I encourage you to go ahead and be bold, and if you'd like, I can take a look and make suggestions. If you need me to write a whole new article in my sandbox for it, I can do so; I know I had said I would do it a few weeks ago and I apologies for not getting to that yet. It may be better if I just help expand the draft itself; like I said, we can always revert back if needed (although I would suggest you do the prose convert first before I start making my own improvements).

I've taken a look at Draft:Scotiabank Convention Centre, it looks nice, but as far as notability goes, I'd suggest adding at least one more source that is clearly significant, reliable, and independent. It's certainly a good start and it is probably notable, but it would still be nice to have a bit more for sourcing (I admit to not having done a Google search yet). The first and second refs, although it's fine to have them in the article, can't really be used to establish notability because the first is not independent and the second is not significant. The third ref seems good for notability purposes. The fourth ref mostly talks about the Comic-con event. The fifth ref seems decent, but it has the same author as the third ref. Therefore, I think that just to ensure this definitely meets the notability guidelines, you should add another high-quality significant ref. Of course, you did mention that you would expand this, so you may plan on doing this already.

Yes, this does help! I think part of my confusion with my own draft of the Scotiabank Convention Centre is that a lot of information about the place exists, but not all of it is relevant in summarizing an encyclopedia article (for example every event that has ever taken place). The search term "scotiabank centre niagara falls" gets back 596,000 results from Google (I'm not sure if that actually saves you any time, though). The main reason I wanted to create the article is that 1) I've been to the place in real life and anecdotally know that's it quite a big deal for Niagara Falls tourism and 2) The Scotiabank Centre article is about an entirely different convention centre in Nova Scotia. There's other stuff I'm trying to figure out as well. Scotiabank is well, a bank, in Canada - so there should be some source somewhere about its tie to the convention centre. I was taking a look at the user who originally welcomed me to the site Nick Moyes and since I have a lot of questions and I'm interested in more longer-term editing, I think I might be interested in becoming an adoptee. @Clovermoss: That does happen quite a bit, where a topic appears in many reliable sources, but they mostly talk about events relating to that subject. Most of the time, in such instances, there is not significant coverage, which is usually required to meet the general notability guideline. Although Google results can be helpful, they are usually not a reliable way of determining what good coverage is available. It is fun to create or improve articles that you are familiar with in real life. (for example, I've been improving the Chinese alligator page, which is on exhibit at a zoo that is close to me and I frequently go to; I also chose to do a presentation about the Chinese alligator for a project).

Regarding your Teahouse question, it looks like you have gotten a reply. Yeah, if you think a redirect is harmful, you should list it at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion, carefully reading the instructions here. I've never really gotten involved with RfD, so I don't have that much advice, but WP:RGUIDE and WP:RFD#DELETE would probably be of some use to you. If you install Twinkle (not sure if you have or haven't yet, but it's extremely useful) in your preferences, you can nominate redirects for deletion much easier via redirects for discussion using the "XFD" option in the toolbar drop down menu. Now, as far as actual notability goes, many of the articles you linked about Pokemon Global Links at the Teahouse don't provide significant coverage or are not reliable, but there are a few good sources there. Thanks for the review! You correctly placed the template in the special occasions holding area, but you also needed to erase it from the unapproved nominations page. Otherwise the bot will come along and automatically move it to the approved page under the date it was created. (I erased it from the unapproved nominations page.) Another alternative in future is to wait a few hours for the bot to move it to the approved page, and then you manually move it from the date of creation to the special occasion holding area. I am ultra impressed by the comprehensive GA evaluation you did for Morpeth. So if you aren't totally wiped out by the experience, may I persuade you do to the peer review on Milton Keynes? My aim is to get it to GA - I think it is almost there - but I don't want to use up good-will on a GA evaluation request without first at least making sure that all the basics are right. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 20:16, 2 March 2019 (UTC)

Hey John Maynard Friedman; thanks for letting me know. It looks like you've worked quite hard on that article... for years, too! I've been working on evaluating the sources and prose for Morpeth for a long time and I'm very close to done, so I think it would be better if I finish that GA review before doing a thorough review of this. Dreamy Jazz has been very patient with my taking so much time; I'm surprised he/she isn't constantly screaming at me to finish the review or looking for a new reviewer by now. :-) So yeah, I really need to finish that up before I start heavily reviewing another article in any way.

However, I was able to do a spot-check of the article. It's certainly not in bad shape, the comprehensiveness and the fact that nearly all material is sourced is great, but there are some issues I notice. The lead doesn't mention most of the info in the body; it mostly has information about the town's population, location, statistics, etc., and doesn't really summarize the article as a whole (sometimes doing so can be hard for such broad articles like these). I've only gotten one GA so far, Molly Morgan, but I am currently working on getting Chinese alligator there. One thing that keeps happening: as I keep re-reading the Chinese alligator page, I constantly find improvements that should be made to it; it seems this keeps occurring no matter how much I proofread it. I can only guess that they must be professional writers and researchers.If you are the sort of person who runs 25km every weekend, it doesn't take much extra sweat to run a marathon! Bounded problems are also more do-able than open-ended ones where you can't ever say it is done or be confident that you have adequately covered the topic. For me, the biggest barrier to getting to GA, let alone FA, is "engaging writing". I know what it looks like but have no idea how to create it! (btw, how strange that nobody has ever created bounded problem, it should be a piece of cake, you just... well.... :-)

@John Maynard Friedman: Engaging writing is definitely one of my weaker points with content creation. Fortunately, GA does not require that; it only requires clear and concise prose and correct spelling and grammar. I think that one of the tricks with getting GAs and FAs quickly is to work efficiently; e.g. make sure that all content you add is very well-written when you add it so that you don't have to come back and copy-edit it a million times later. Awesome work, John Maynard Friedman; the lead looks so much better now! Doing a very brief look over it, the prose and size look very nice. I'll take a closer look tomorrow or the next day and leave comments at the peer review. For now, I will say that I personally would not recommend using such a long quote at the end of the final paragraph; I suggest having a summarized paraphrase instead. Also, if you are going to keep the quote, that will still need to be cited even though it's in the lead and covered in the body; WP:LEADCITE says ... and direct quotations, should be supported by an inline citation. This is the main thing I noticed after my very brief overview, but again, I'll take a closer look tomorrow.

For how to nominate in article for GA status, see the Nominating section of WP:GAI. Basically, you place {{subst:GAN|subtopic=[SUBTOPICHERE]}} at the top of the article's talk page when ready to nominate, replacing [SUBTOPICHERE] with one of the 30 topics listed at the GAI page I just linked, or leave it blank if it does not fit any of the categories. In this case, you would likely place {{subst:GAN|subtopic=Places}}, as Places is the most relevant category here. The bot will do the rest. The instructions page I linked explains this in more detail and covers other aspects, such as what to do during the review, before, etc. I hope this helps you out! @John Maynard Friedman: Thanks a lot for taking the time to look over the article! All of your tweaks look great to me; in fact, some of your changes fixed places where I was not sure the best way to word something or its meaning. The only change of yours that I'm unsure about is that you changed "seldom reproduce in the wild" to "no longer reproduce in the wild". You say that the NYT source doesn't support what was there before; however, I see The alligators are even worse off than the tally suggests because few of them appear to be reproducing in the wild, he added and nothing about that they can't reproduce at all. Also, it contradicts other sources and other parts of the article that say that they are starting to breed quite well in the wild; it certainly doesn't seem like they're not breeding at all! It's entirely possible that I'm missing something and you're correct, but I want to make sure you didn't misunderstand something; I personally misunderstand sources all the time. It might be something worth looking back at. :-)

But yeah, besides that, your edits look great, so thanks again! Overall, do you think the article looks ok? I am definitely going to do several more checks before I nominate it for GA; e.g., rereading the second half of the article for the thousandth time, performing appropriate copy-edits, and doing the same with the sources. I found the NYT article just a bit too vague. I accept that it doesn't really support my text either. When you have to distil journalese down to a single pithy sentence, that's when you realise how thin it really is. So I shall now tiptoe away quietly and leave you to clear up the mess!

I've never had an article subjected to GA analysis, let alone done one. But I have looked at a few GA articles to see what the MK article needs and certainly to my eye Chinese Alligator already makes the cut. Thanks John Maynard Friedman! I still think "the alligators seldom reproduce in the wild" is more accurate of a paraphrase from the statement "few reproduce" than "they never reproduce" would be, but it could just be me. :-) Anyways, the NYT source is actually from 2001, and since then, multiple conservation actions have been successful with the species. Also, more recent sources say that they are now adapting well to the wild and breeding. Therefore, I've simply removed that sentence, as I think that would be the best thing to do. You definitely have to distill newspapers to a single sentence a lot when writing WP articles; often, newspapers will write paragraphs about a topic, but very little of that is actually useful for an encyclopedia article. Hello SkyGazer 512, I saw your message on the "Requests for Permissions" page. I am sorry I screwed it up, I have pretty much no clue how to use Wikipedia. Also, thank you for the cookies! I believe someone with your stature on Wikipedia would be able to help me "move" a Wikipedia page or re title the page, I was reading something about being autoconfimed but I don't believe I have the qualifications for that. As you might've seen my try to do, I've been trying to rename the title for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KRFC, but am not able to do so. I am a volunteer with the radio station and was asked by our Executive Director to change the title. The radio station name was recently changed and we want to differentiate from another radio station that has similar call letters mentioned in the "talk" section of KRFC's page. Ok, Krfc-ryano, so here's the deal. Moving pages does require autoconfirmed status, which is automatically added to user accounts that have had an account for 4 days and made 10 edits. You just now reached that status, so you could technically move the page now. However, I would very strongly advise that you do not do so. If you volunteer for the radio station and were asked by your Executive Director to change the title, then you have what we call a conflict of interest with the subject. Therefore, you should not be making edits to the article or moving it yourself. This page describes what a conflict of interest is and what to do if you have one in detail. this section in particular would probably be useful for you, although the guide as a whole mostly talks about the process of requesting edits, not page moves. Also, note that if you ever edit for pay, you are required to disclose this on your user page.

Anyways, regarding the moving thing, moves that are obviously uncontroversial can be performed directly or listed at the technical requests page if there are technical restrictions preventing one from doing so. However, if a move is likely to be controversial, it has to go through the requested moves process. This page describes mostly everything you need to know about the requested moves process; how to do it, when to do it, etc. Because you have a conflict of interest with the subject, you should not move the article yourself, and I think that the best way to request a move would be via requested moves (often abbreviated RM), although there may be some other recommended way for editors with a conflict of interest to request a page move that I don't know about. I know little about this particular radio station and what the correct title would be, so apologies for that, but I would recommend you at least glance through this page, which is the policy page for what the title of articles should generally be. this section of the policy page may be particular useful for a case like this; pages are not always moved to their official title, but rather a common and recognizable title.

Hi Krfc-ryano! In my original post, I was trying to say that you are very strongly discouraged from moving the page yourself and that you should open a discussion via the requested moves process instead. I see that you've tried to directly move the page twice and were reverted both times. Now, an administrator has protected the page so that only administrators can move it. Therefore, your only option now is to discuss the move using the requested move process I was talking about. This link gives you all the details on how to open such a discussion. As this page points out, editors should not edit pages they have a conflict of interest with directly, which applies to moving too. :-) I hope you find this response helpful and feel free to let me know if you have any questions! • Two elements of CSD G6 have been split into their own criteria: R4 for redirects in the "File:" namespace with the same name as a file or redirect at Wikimedia Commons (Discussion), and G14 for disambiguation pages which disambiguate zero pages, or have "(disambiguation)" in the title but disambiguate a single page (Discussion).
• {{db-blankdraft}} was merged into G13 (Discussion)
• A discussion recently closed with no consensus on whether to create a subject-specific notability guideline for theatrical plays.

Reminders

• NPR is not a binary keep / delete process. In many cases a redirect may be appropriate. The deletion policy and its associated guideline clearly emphasise that not all unsuitable articles must be deleted. Redirects are not contentious. See a classic example of the templates to use. More templates are listed at the R template index. Reviewers who are not aware, do please take this into consideration before PROD, CSD, and especially AfD because not even all admins are aware of such policies, and many NAC do not have a full knowledge of them.

FYI, I wrote it to defeat the delete; that whole kerfuffle started because one editor got irritated and retaliatory when I undid his deletion of a link to the article. A silly and petulant reason to start an AFD, IMO. 7&6=thirteen (☎) 23:18, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

@7&6=thirteen: Yeah, I'm watching stalking your talk page, so I saw the discussion about it, which is where I even found the article. :P It's great that you were able to change an article that had nearly no content to such an interesting and substantial article. I agree with you that the rationale was not a valid reason to delete. However, I understand the reasoning behind the nomination considering how bad of shape the article was in before, despite disagreeing, and not doing a BEFORE search is an understandable mistake for someone who may not be very experienced with AfD. @Liance: Oh gosh, I created that article a long time ago... before I was familiar enough with what exactly a reliable source is and the specifics of notability guidelines. Now that I've gotten more experience with such guidelines, I know it is definitely not notable. :-) I was actually going to G7 the page a few months ago but then I forgot about that, as usual. Anyways, I've searched quite a bit and I'm not able to find anything that is both reliable and significant, so I have gone ahead and G7d the article so that it can be speedy deleted.
