Incomplete DYK nomination

Hello! Your submission of Template:Did you know nominations/Alexina Maude Wildman at the Did You Know nominations page is not complete; if you would like to continue, please link the nomination to the nominations page as described in step 3 of the nomination procedure. If you do not want to continue with the nomination, tag the nomination page with {{db-g7}}, or ask a DYK admin. Thank you. DYKHousekeepingBot (talk) 09:22, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

I always forget that needs to be a done if a hook is removed from a prep area and the nomination reopened. Fixed.--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 14:25, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

Well, as the scheduler said, you can't argue about a tricentenary ;) - I am almost prouder about our local music being pictured in the DYK section. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:11, 1 January 2019 (UTC)
@Gerda Arendt: Yeah, that is awesome!
Speaking of music-related stuff, that reminds me, I was planning on working on Night on Bald Mountain a bit over the break; I've been practicing the piece on piano, trying to work it up to speed (it's very difficult to play!) and the Wikipedia article could use a lot of improvement.--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 18:45, 1 January 2019 (UTC)
I had a similar experience when I saw Vespro della Beata Vergine, which will be our next project, and could profit from improvement. Monteverdi's operas are so much better developed. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:50, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

Editing PC Optimum

So, I've edited the other two unsourced claims you mentioned at the Teahouse for the PC Optimum article. Can I remove the maintenance template now? Also, thank you very much for cleaning up the links for those references for that guideline you mentioned. Clovermoss (talk) 17:35, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

@Clovermoss: No problem regarding the copy-edits. :-) I've removed the tag as it appears that the article's sourcing is sufficient now. Thanks again for the edits you made to the article and I hope you continue to make improvements like these!--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 18:53, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – January 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2018).

  Guideline and policy news

  1. G14 (new): Disambiguation pages that disambiguate only zero or one existing pages are now covered under the new G14 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-disambig}}; the text is unchanged and candidates may be found in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion as unnecessary disambiguation pages.
  2. R4 (new): Redirects in the file namespace (and no file links) that have the same name as a file or redirect at Commons are now covered under the new R4 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-redircom}}; the text is unchanged.
  3. G13 (expanded): Userspace drafts containing only the default Article Wizard text are now covered under G13 along with other drafts (discussion). Such blank drafts are now eligible after six months rather than one year, and taggers continue to use {{db-blankdraft}}.

  Technical news

  • Starting on December 13, the Wikimedia Foundation security team implemented new password policy and requirements. Privileged accounts (administrators, bureaucrats, checkusers, oversighters, interface administrators, bots, edit filter managers/helpers, template editors, et al.) must have a password at least 10 characters in length. All accounts must have a password:
  1. At least 8 characters in length
  2. Not in the 100,000 most popular passwords (defined by the Password Blacklist library)
  3. Different from their username
User accounts not meeting these requirements will be prompted to update their password accordingly. More information is available on MediaWiki.org.
  • Blocked administrators may now block the administrator that blocked them. This was done to mitigate the possibility that a compromised administrator account would block all other active administrators, complementing the removal of the ability to unblock oneself outside of self-imposed blocks. A request for comment is currently in progress to determine whether the blocking policy should be updated regarding this change.
  • {{Copyvio-revdel}} now has a link to open the history with the RevDel checkboxes already filled in.

  Arbitration

  Miscellaneous

  • Accounts continue to be compromised on a regular basis. Evidence shows this is entirely due to the accounts having the same password that was used on another website that suffered a data breach. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately.
  • Around 22% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 20% in June 2018. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless of whether you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

Question

I had another question about editing. There is something I want to try and do, but I'm not exactly sure how to do it. I have had five years of schooling where most of my schoolwork was in French... so, in general, I understand it quite well. I don't think I'm confident enough in my writing ability in French itself, but I would probably be really good at translating things into English. The problem is, I'm not sure if there's anything in particular that I have to do to do that. Or if I should just wait until I have more experience on Wikipedia for something like that. Do you have any advice? Clovermoss (talk) 14:59, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

P.S. I tried to do something with a French Wikipedia article in my sandbox, but I scrapped it because it didn't feel like I was actually going anywhere. Clovermoss (talk) 15:01, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

Also, I have started a draft article. There's still a lot I would like to do with it, but I had some questions related to that, too. 1. How do you reference books when citing? 2. I might not be able to find an exact date for when she was born. So far, all of my sources reference 1876 - but not an exact month or day. 3. How do I fill in infoboxes? I found a template that seems like it should work, but I'm not sure whether or not I'm using it correctly. I'm sorry for asking so many questions. I try to find the information I need before asking, but I'm not always sure where to look. Clovermoss (talk) 20:12, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi Clovermoss and thanks for reaching out! I'll try to answer your questions the best I can. For your first one, yeah, you can translate a page like that. This tells you pretty much everything you need to know, so I highly recommend you read through that, but I'll highlight the most important parts here. The first is that you must credit the source article. To do this, add Content in this edit is translated from the existing French Wikipedia article at [[:fr:Exact name of French article]]; see its history for attribution to your creation summary AND add the following coding to the talk page:
{{translated page|fr|[NAMEOFPAGEINFRENCH]|version=[The version identifier of the revision of the source page from which the translation was derived]|insertversion=[The version identifier of the revision of the target page into which the translation was placed]}}
See here for more details on how to find the last 2 parameters. Another important highlight is that you should not be overinfluenced by the style of the original article and if it contains unsourced material, nonsense, etc., it should be removed from the English version if possible. Again, the link I provided contains a lot more details.
Now, for your next post: 1. you can use {{cite book}}. 2. that's fine, not everyone does, just mention that she was born in 1876 in the infobox; the fact that the birth date is not known is not a reason to not create an article. :-) 3. the infobox you have looks fine to me. I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any more questions. I also have a couple of suggestions for your draft if you want me to edit it. Cheers, --SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 14:53, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
Okay, thank you! I'll make sure to look at that link for future reference if I ever try to do anything with French again. I think I'll focus on the draft article for now. What kind of suggestions were you thinking for the draft article? I don't mind if you want to help, in fact I would appreciate it. Clovermoss (talk) 15:16, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
@Clovermoss: I just made a few minor copy-edits to it, but here are some other suggestions I'd have:
  • Change the list format to running prose, as that's generally preferred on Wikipedia articles
  • Cite your references inline, so that each piece of information can be verified individually
  • Add her death date of 26 April 1925
Of course you may be working on these as you did say this is a work in progress. You could also expand this article a lot, as there's much information available online. If you'd like, I'd be happy to make more substantial edits to it, rather than just minor copy-edits. This article has a lot of potential and I am quite surprised Hughes never had an article already! Thank you for helping improve Wikipedia.--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 16:37, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
Thank you once again! The list thing was more of a temporary situation as I wasn't sure how (at least at the moment) I was going to create running pose. It was kind of an in-between step, I guess. And yes, I'm also surprised Katherine Hughes didn't already have an article. I took a look at your user page yesterday and wondered what the userbox that said "make women blue" meant, and it sure is an interesting wikiproject. I went to the Canada section under redlinks and picked a random red link to try and research for notability (which was Katherine Hughes). It seems that there is a well-known modern actress for the same name, so Google's results probably show the most information asked on them unless you clarify stuff like political activist or dates. Clovermoss (talk) 16:43, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
@Clovermoss: Yeah, I thought it may have been temporary but I didn't think it'd hurt to bring it up. :-) Yeah, feel free to join WP:WikiProject Women in Red by clicking here; it's always great to have more members! I've had the same Google issue before several times, particularly for Molly Morgan for which there was a modern actress with the same name, but yeah, clarifying some stuff in the search usually helps. Good luck with the article and please let me know if you need help with something.--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 16:56, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
Joined. Again, thanks for the help, even if I've repeated it so many times. I will let you know if I need help with anything else. Oh, and is it weird that I want to say sorry for cluttering up your talk page? Clovermoss (talk) 17:01, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
@Clovermoss: Cool, glad to have you helping out! Please don't worry; asking honest questions to me is not cluttering my talk page, regardless of the number.--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 17:28, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the reassurance, although I think it has more to do with my personal pet peeve against "walls of text" than being averse to asking questions. By the way, I'm trying to figure out how those inline citations work when citing the same source multiple times. I know that when I was editing the PC Optimum article, you were able to name them somehow, but I can't figure out how it works. Clovermoss (talk) 17:39, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
@Clovermoss: So basically, in most inline citations you use the coding <ref>Reference here</ref>, right? Well, when you want to use a reference multiple times you use the following coding for the first instance instead: <ref name="[nameofref]">Reference here</ref> and when you want to use that ref again, you'd use <ref name="[nameofref]"/>. Make sure you use that exact coding because sometimes including or not including a simple slash will completely change the results. Does that help? See WP:REFNAME for more details. Cheers, --SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 23:36, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

DYK for Whitespot ghost shark

On 8 January 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Whitespot ghost shark, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the whitespot ghost shark is known from only four specimens in the Galápagos Islands? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Whitespot ghost shark. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Whitespot ghost shark), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Oh, we're talking about a whole day...made breakfast, dropped kids off at school, went recycling, got stuff at Lowe's, got crazy food things at the international supermarket, worked on French drain, worked on chapter for book...picked up kids, sold Girl Scout cookies for two hours outside the Winn-Dixie...so yeah I had little time to find more proxies to drop childish nonsense about zombie birds. BTW [[Pinewood derby] needs a bit of work. Drmies (talk) 04:50, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
@Drmies: Yeah, I don't have kids so that probably buys me a lot more time. I know little about racing events and I don't think I've ever edited in that category (I usually do animal species, and sometimes historical women and geographical features), but I could try to take a look at Pinewood derby and see if anything obvious needs to be done.--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 14:22, 19 January 2019 (UTC)

Checking In/Draft Progress

Hi. I'm still having a bit of a hard time thinking of how to convert what I have of my draft into running prose that works. I remember you saying that you had some ideas. I don't want to force any work or anything on you, as you're probably pretty busy, but if you have any ideas for how the draft can be made better... maybe we can discuss them? Clovermoss (talk) 16:54, 28 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi Clovermoss. I'd be happy to see what I can do; I'm a bit more busy now that Christmas break is over but I'm sure I'd be able to find myself some time to work on this. For articles like this, it is difficult to just discuss every individual change, so a better idea may be for me to write a version of the page in my sandbox that's like yours but uses running prose instead, and then you can see what you think. How does that sound?--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 16:58, 28 January 2019 (UTC)
That sounds like an amazing idea! Thank you so much. Clovermoss (talk) 22:03, 28 January 2019 (UTC)

Photo Removal?

Hello, I am the inventor and owner of the product, Equicizer. I started a wiki page for this product and tried to add a photo in. I thought I took the correct steps to upload the photo and add it the wiki page. The photo got taken down with the following comment, "14:55, 1 January 2019‎ SkyGazer 512 (talk | contribs)‎ . . (5,482 bytes) -130‎ . . (Reverted good faith edits by Frankie Lovato: Not sure what you're trying to do here, the template is meant to be used for the "Account Creation Improvement Project to welcome and orient new users", it doesn't belong in a mainspace article. (TW)) (undo | thank) Tag: Undo"

I'm afraid I don't understand why the photo was taken down. I'm not extremely tech savy so any clarification would be appreciated.

Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Frankie Lovato (talkcontribs) 13:51, 29 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi Frankie Lovato, thanks for reaching out! I'd be happy to try to explain further. :)
So basically, you inserted the image format incorrectly. Because of the way you inserted it, it changed the whole page completely and made it look like a user page instead of a mainspace page. Compare the look of the page when you edited it to the current look. This is because instead of using the standard image format, you added the template {{new user bar}} with your file in the image parameter. We don't want that template; that's designated for userpages and shouldn't be placed in an article. I didn't realize you were trying to put an image in but used the wrong template instead or I would've corrected the image format instead of reverted your edit, so please accept my apologies for that error of mine.
Now, to get to the actual point, all you have to do to add the file is simply add [[File:Equicizer Mechanical Horse Riding Simulator.jpg|thumb|Equicizer Mechanical Horse Riding Simulator]] somewhere in the page, wherever you want it to display. No templates, no curly brackets (although of course normal brackets are still needed), no parameters, just that. It's a fairly straightforward change so I've already done it for you as you can see here. I've placed the image at the top of the page, but you can move it to wherever you would like.
There is something else to consider, based on what you said in your post. Because you are the inventor of Equicizer, you have a conflict of interest with the subject. This page explains in detail what a conflict of interest is, what to do if you have one, etc. In short, you should not edit a page that you have a conflict of interest with. Instead, propose edits on the talk page using {{request edit}}. This section of the page I linked contains more specific details on how to do this as well as other options.
I hope this helps you out some and please let me know if you have any questions. :)--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 15:03, 29 January 2019 (UTC)
SkyGazer 512 Ahhh that makes more sense. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain! I misstated in my original message, I did not create the page originally but have edited it in the past. I sincerely appreciate your reply and will propose edits on the talk page instead, moving forward. Have a great day!Frankie Lovato (talk) 15:20, 29 January 2019 (UTC)
No problem, Frankie Lovato. Thanks for clarifying that you didn't create it, because I was just about to ask you about that. One thing that I was going to mention in my original reply but neglected to, is that when requesting edits and making edits, especially ones where you have a conflict of interest, it's important to remember that all material must be supported by reliable sources. Knowing something from personal experience is not good enough; it can only be included in an article if the information can be found in a published, reliable source. That source should be cited in the article so that readers can verify the information. This page explains more details about this. Thanks and great day to you as well!  --SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 15:33, 29 January 2019 (UTC)

DYK for Alexina Maude Wildman

On 8 February 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Alexina Maude Wildman, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Alexina Maude Wildman's biting, sarcastic gossip column in The Bulletin was headed by the cartoon image of an old woman, disguising the fact that she was in her 20s? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Alexina Maude Wildman. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Alexina Maude Wildman), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Draft update and some other stuff

Hey. I had some ideas for converting some of my ideas into running prose like we discussed earlier, but I was wondering if there was anything you came up that I should consider first before expanding the Katherine Hughes draft. I also wanted to let you know that I started a draft on another article and I was kind of wondering if you could offer some general advice/comments about what you think. It isn't a biographical article, it's about a convention centre that I'm fairly certain would be considered notable. I think the state that draft article is in right now is kind of short, but I have some plans for how I might expand it. On top of all that, I posted a question in the Teahouse earlier (as I thought it was more of a general question that could be answered faster but it hasn't had an answer so far, so if you had any advice on that I would be incredibly grateful). Clovermoss (talk) 01:30, 13 February 2019 (UTC)

@Clovermoss: Honestly, I think that if you have ideas for the draft, you should just incorporate them and go for it, as there's really no reason you shouldn't. Users can always revise your ideas if needed and you can always revert them if needed. Also, it's a draft, so it's okay if you don't think it's well-written or well-sourced at a current point in time, as long as, of course, it isn't spam, a copyvio, or anything extreme like that. So I encourage you to go ahead and be bold, and if you'd like, I can take a look and make suggestions. If you need me to write a whole new article in my sandbox for it, I can do so; I know I had said I would do it a few weeks ago and I apologies for not getting to that yet. It may be better if I just help expand the draft itself; like I said, we can always revert back if needed (although I would suggest you do the prose convert first before I start making my own improvements).
I've taken a look at Draft:Scotiabank Convention Centre, it looks nice, but as far as notability goes, I'd suggest adding at least one more source that is clearly significant, reliable, and independent. It's certainly a good start and it is probably notable, but it would still be nice to have a bit more for sourcing (I admit to not having done a Google search yet). The first and second refs, although it's fine to have them in the article, can't really be used to establish notability because the first is not independent and the second is not significant. The third ref seems good for notability purposes. The fourth ref mostly talks about the Comic-con event. The fifth ref seems decent, but it has the same author as the third ref. Therefore, I think that just to ensure this definitely meets the notability guidelines, you should add another high-quality significant ref. Of course, you did mention that you would expand this, so you may plan on doing this already.
Does this help you out a bit? If you have any more questions, feel free to let me know.--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 04:49, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
Yes, this does help! I think part of my confusion with my own draft of the Scotiabank Convention Centre is that a lot of information about the place exists, but not all of it is relevant in summarizing an encyclopedia article (for example every event that has ever taken place). The search term "scotiabank centre niagara falls" gets back 596,000 results from Google (I'm not sure if that actually saves you any time, though). The main reason I wanted to create the article is that 1) I've been to the place in real life and anecdotally know that's it quite a big deal for Niagara Falls tourism and 2) The Scotiabank Centre article is about an entirely different convention centre in Nova Scotia. There's other stuff I'm trying to figure out as well. Scotiabank is well, a bank, in Canada - so there should be some source somewhere about its tie to the convention centre. Clovermoss (talk) 04:58, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
Also, I know I've been asking a lot of questions since I started editing. I was taking a look at the user who originally welcomed me to the site Nick Moyes and since I have a lot of questions and I'm interested in more longer-term editing, I think I might be interested in becoming an adoptee. I didn't think you were adopting any users, but do you have any thoughts on the process in general and whether or not I would benefit from it? Clovermoss (talk) 05:34, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
So I guess I'll start the improvements to running prose first. It might take a few days or longer to do. I actually do have a life (I'm a student) but classes keep getting cancelled because of the weather. Thanks for all the help you've been giving. Any chance you have any advice for my Teahouse thread? Clovermoss (talk) 05:05, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
@Clovermoss: That does happen quite a bit, where a topic appears in many reliable sources, but they mostly talk about events relating to that subject. Most of the time, in such instances, there is not significant coverage, which is usually required to meet the general notability guideline. Although Google results can be helpful, they are usually not a reliable way of determining what good coverage is available. It is fun to create or improve articles that you are familiar with in real life. (for example, I've been improving the Chinese alligator page, which is on exhibit at a zoo that is close to me and I frequently go to; I also chose to do a presentation about the Chinese alligator for a project).
Regarding your Teahouse question, it looks like you have gotten a reply. Yeah, if you think a redirect is harmful, you should list it at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion, carefully reading the instructions here. I've never really gotten involved with RfD, so I don't have that much advice, but WP:RGUIDE and WP:RFD#DELETE would probably be of some use to you. If you install Twinkle (not sure if you have or haven't yet, but it's extremely useful) in your preferences, you can nominate redirects for deletion much easier via redirects for discussion using the "XFD" option in the toolbar drop down menu. Now, as far as actual notability goes, many of the articles you linked about Pokemon Global Links at the Teahouse don't provide significant coverage or are not reliable, but there are a few good sources there. If you need any further clarification about any of this, I can clarify. Happy editing!--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 21:04, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for all the help! I wasn't pinged/notified for the Teahouse, so I had no idea the question got answered. Clovermoss (talk) 21:13, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
@Clovermoss: Btw, the correct coding for a successful ping is {{u|[USERHERE]}} or {{ping|[USERHERE}}}. Curly brackets, not straight ones.  --SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 23:42, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
@SkyGazer 512: Yep! I actually just recently figured that out on my own. I mean, technically I was just paying more attention to wikimarkup and figuring out what it does, but I think that should still count. Any advice about the adoption thing I mentioned earlier (I noticed I didn't ping you or @Nick Moyes: properly now that I know how exactly I was failing earlier). Clovermoss (talk) 23:53, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
@Clovermoss: Erm, sorry, I thought I had replied to you about the adoption part but apparently I hadn't. Anyways, I was planning on simply saying that I don't know much about the process and that it would be best to wait for Nick to reply, but now that the adoption has started you should be good to go with that for now. Cheers, --SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 02:24, 14 February 2019 (UTC)
@SkyGazer 512: You've been an amazing help to me the past few weeks. I really appreciate that and I wanted to say thank you for it. I may be adopted now, but I hope to (maybe) still see you around. Clovermoss (talk) 03:56, 14 February 2019 (UTC)

@Clovermoss: I'm happy to be able to help out; your praise is very much appreciated. I hope we will see each other around as well and good luck with your adoption.--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 04:06, 14 February 2019 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Mexican-style rice

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Mexican-style rice, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion, such as at Articles for deletion. When a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after a discussion, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Steel1943 (talk) 21:27, 15 February 2019 (UTC)

@Steel1943: Welp, I did not know that there was a previous RFD when I created the redirect. Quite a few Google Searches showed Mexican rice as a common alternative name for Spanish rice, I did not look deep enough to see that they were actually separate dishes. In that case, I apologize and thank you for tagging the page for deletion and letting me know about it. Cheers, --SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 22:15, 15 February 2019 (UTC)
Well, only the redirect you created was deleted. The other one in that discussion, Mexican rice, was kept. Steel1943 (talk) 22:17, 15 February 2019 (UTC)

Mexican-style rice listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect Mexican-style rice. Since you had some involvement with the Mexican-style rice redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion if you wish to do so. Steel1943 (talk) 22:38, 15 February 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for the review! You correctly placed the template in the special occasions holding area, but you also needed to erase it from the unapproved nominations page. Otherwise the bot will come along and automatically move it to the approved page under the date it was created. (I erased it from the unapproved nominations page.) Another alternative in future is to wait a few hours for the bot to move it to the approved page, and then you manually move it from the date of creation to the special occasion holding area. Can I have whatever she is having?

I am ultra impressed by the comprehensive GA evaluation you did for Morpeth. So if you aren't totally wiped out by the experience, may I persuade you do to the peer review on Milton Keynes? My aim is to get it to GA - I think it is almost there - but I don't want to use up good-will on a GA evaluation request without first at least making sure that all the basics are right. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 20:16, 2 March 2019 (UTC)

Hey John Maynard Friedman; thanks for letting me know. It looks like you've worked quite hard on that article... for years, too! I've been working on evaluating the sources and prose for Morpeth for a long time and I'm very close to done, so I think it would be better if I finish that GA review before doing a thorough review of this. Dreamy Jazz has been very patient with my taking so much time; I'm surprised he/she isn't constantly screaming at me to finish the review or looking for a new reviewer by now. :-) So yeah, I really need to finish that up before I start heavily reviewing another article in any way.
However, I was able to do a spot-check of the article. It's certainly not in bad shape, the comprehensiveness and the fact that nearly all material is sourced is great, but there are some issues I notice. The lead doesn't mention most of the info in the body; it mostly has information about the town's population, location, statistics, etc., and doesn't really summarize the article as a whole (sometimes doing so can be hard for such broad articles like these). Also, sentences like Milton Keynes also boasts several choirs should probably be worded to something more neutral like Milton Keynes also has several choirs. Overall, the whole prose probably needs to be read thoroughly, as there are easy-to-fix but noticeable errors such as a random "it" near the Arts and Literature section and some grammar errors. There is also the occasional occurrence of unsourced material, such as the section "Modern parishes, community councils and districts".
Again, I'll be able to look in more detail after I finish the Morpeth review, but this may help a little bit for what you need to look out for when proofreading the article. Thanks again for leaving me a message here and the work you have done to improve Milton Keynes, and best of luck with your current peer review and any future GA reviews! Cheers, --SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 23:54, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
Thank you very much for even this much, which will be immediately useful. I do work on other articles too :-) My big problem with this article is that I've been looking at it for so long that I can no longer see the wood for the trees. Another trap is wp:own! --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 10:32, 3 March 2019 (UTC)
No problem, John Maynard Friedman. I've had that same issue quite frequently; I've read and edited an article so many times that I can't look at it from an outside perspective anymore.--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 14:15, 3 March 2019 (UTC)
GA is a dream really. I see that Sheffield achieved it but it is a huge ask for broad overview articles like this. Getting to A class should be achievable, hopefully.
I'll be very pleased to accept whatever you have time to do. My big obstacle at the moment is to come up with a lead that is more than the sum of its parts. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 21:07, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
@John Maynard Friedman: GA isn't always difficult, but it can be tricky when you have a long article and/or it is not in good shape to begin with. I've only gotten one GA so far, Molly Morgan, but I am currently working on getting Chinese alligator there. One thing that keeps happening: as I keep re-reading the Chinese alligator page, I constantly find improvements that should be made to it; it seems this keeps occurring no matter how much I proofread it. There are some people who can bring several articles to FA status in a single month, but I honestly can't see how that is possible.--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 03:28, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
I can only guess that they must be professional writers and researchers. If you are the sort of person who runs 25km every weekend, it doesn't take much extra sweat to run a marathon! Bounded problems are also more do-able than open-ended ones where you can't ever say it is done or be confident that you have adequately covered the topic. For me, the biggest barrier to getting to GA, let alone FA, is "engaging writing". I know what it looks like but have no idea how to create it! (btw, how strange that nobody has ever created bounded problem, it should be a piece of cake, you just... well.... :-)
I know nothing about alligators, Chinese or otherwise, but I shall have a read to see if I can go someway towards returning the compliment. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 11:04, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
@John Maynard Friedman: Engaging writing is definitely one of my weaker points with content creation. Fortunately, GA does not require that; it only requires clear and concise prose and correct spelling and grammar. I think that one of the tricks with getting GAs and FAs quickly is to work efficiently; e.g. make sure that all content you add is very well-written when you add it so that you don't have to come back and copy-edit it a million times later. Your writing prompt hit the spot, I think. Milton Keynes has a new lead section. I've also found a demographic counterbalance for all the positive stuff, which I think improves the 'texture'. I would welcome your final comments before I request GA review. (How do I do that, by the way?). --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 19:09, 12 March 2019 (UTC)

Awesome work, John Maynard Friedman; the lead looks so much better now! Doing a very brief look over it, the prose and size look very nice. I'll take a closer look tomorrow or the next day and leave comments at the peer review. For now, I will say that I personally would not recommend using such a long quote at the end of the final paragraph; I suggest having a summarized paraphrase instead. Also, if you are going to keep the quote, that will still need to be cited even though it's in the lead and covered in the body; WP:LEADCITE says ... and direct quotations, should be supported by an inline citation. This is the main thing I noticed after my very brief overview, but again, I'll take a closer look tomorrow.
For how to nominate in article for GA status, see the Nominating section of WP:GAI. Basically, you place {{subst:GAN|subtopic=[SUBTOPICHERE]}} at the top of the article's talk page when ready to nominate, replacing [SUBTOPICHERE] with one of the 30 topics listed at the GAI page I just linked, or leave it blank if it does not fit any of the categories. In this case, you would likely place {{subst:GAN|subtopic=Places}}, as Places is the most relevant category here. The bot will do the rest. The instructions page I linked explains this in more detail and covers other aspects, such as what to do during the review, before, etc. I hope this helps you out! Cheers, --SkyGazer 512 My talk page 02:26, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
Thank you, I was completely blocked until your prompt. Like all good ideas it fell into the category of "why didn't I think of that???".
I didn't know about leadcite: I will fix as I believe that it should stay. I see it as concise and very well written and not one I could reuse without obvious wp:paraphrase. The longer quotation is nicely written too but I ought to be able to come up with some words. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 10:14, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
@John Maynard Friedman: I'm happy I could help! Thanks for adding the extra cite; there is no obligation to remove the quote, but it would just be my recommendation. Something like However, poverty is still an increasing issue in the town, despite having such a prosperous economy might could work, but it may still be too close of paraphrasing.--SkyGazer 512 My talk page 15:14, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
I can't improve on the direct quote, so am inclined to let it stand. I have asked at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Buckinghamshire for any contributions or comments, let's see if anyone else has an opinion on the quote. I'll put an explicit request at talk:Milton Keynes. Thank you again for your continuing interest and assistance. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 17:02, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
@John Maynard Friedman: That's understandable; certainly not a dealbreaker! That alone obviously would never be a reason to quick-fail an article for GA, so you could just leave it there and see if the GA reviewer says anything about it. Posting at WikiProjects is generally a good idea, although unfortunately it doesn't look like this one is particularly active. Cheers, --SkyGazer 512 My talk page 20:18, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

Abelmoschus Esculentus' User Scripts

Dear all. Recently, our community lost a dedicated user, Abelmoschus Esculentus (talk). Among their projects were a number of user scripts that they left behind. I (DannyS712) have copied the scripts, and have taken over maintaining them. You currently import one or more of Abelmoschus Esculentus' scripts, and I thought that you might want to import a maintained version. Links to each script are provided below.

DYK for Galápagos ghostshark

On 5 March 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Galápagos ghostshark, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the Galápagos ghostshark was scientifically named after John E. McCosker, who had discovered the species on his 50th birthday? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Galápagos ghostshark. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Galápagos ghostshark), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Chinese alligator

I have edited a couple of places that I thought were unclear and I may have clarified in the wrong direction! I hope you find them valid or at least useful editing prompts. As usual, please feel free to do a "what the President intended to say"! (btw, a common mistake but polygamy includes polygyny and polyadnry).--John Maynard Friedman (talk) 17:10, 6 March 2019 (UTC)

@John Maynard Friedman: Thanks a lot for taking the time to look over the article! All of your tweaks look great to me; in fact, some of your changes fixed places where I was not sure the best way to word something or its meaning. The only change of yours that I'm unsure about is that you changed "seldom reproduce in the wild" to "no longer reproduce in the wild". You say that the NYT source doesn't support what was there before; however, I see The alligators are even worse off than the tally suggests because few of them appear to be reproducing in the wild, he added and nothing about that they can't reproduce at all. Also, it contradicts other sources and other parts of the article that say that they are starting to breed quite well in the wild; it certainly doesn't seem like they're not breeding at all! It's entirely possible that I'm missing something and you're correct, but I want to make sure you didn't misunderstand something; I personally misunderstand sources all the time. It might be something worth looking back at. :-)
But yeah, besides that, your edits look great, so thanks again! Overall, do you think the article looks ok? I am definitely going to do several more checks before I nominate it for GA; e.g., rereading the second half of the article for the thousandth time, performing appropriate copy-edits, and doing the same with the sources. Cheers, --SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 00:43, 7 March 2019 (UTC)
I found the NYT article just a bit too vague. I accept that it doesn't really support my text either. When you have to distil journalese down to a single pithy sentence, that's when you realise how thin it really is. So I shall now tiptoe away quietly and leave you to clear up the mess!
I've never had an article subjected to GA analysis, let alone done one. But I have looked at a few GA articles to see what the MK article needs and certainly to my eye Chinese Alligator already makes the cut. The only suggestion I could make is that you check every wlink target to ensure that it says what you think it says - are there any more "everybody knows" like polygamy? --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 11:38, 7 March 2019 (UTC)
Thanks John Maynard Friedman! I still think "the alligators seldom reproduce in the wild" is more accurate of a paraphrase from the statement "few reproduce" than "they never reproduce" would be, but it could just be me. :-) Anyways, the NYT source is actually from 2001, and since then, multiple conservation actions have been successful with the species. Also, more recent sources say that they are now adapting well to the wild and breeding. Therefore, I've simply removed that sentence, as I think that would be the best thing to do. You definitely have to distill newspapers to a single sentence a lot when writing WP articles; often, newspapers will write paragraphs about a topic, but very little of that is actually useful for an encyclopedia article. I appreciate your taking the time to look over the article and for the suggestion. Cheers, --SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 15:24, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

Please participate to the talk pages consultation

Hello

Our team at the Wikimedia Foundation is working on a project to improve the ease-of-use and productivity of wiki talk pages. As a Teahouse host, I can imagine you’ve run into challenges explaining talk pages to first-time participants.

We want all contributors to be able to talk to each other on the wikis – to ask questions, to resolve differences, to organize projects and to make decisions. Communication is essential for the depth and quality of our content, and the health of our communities. We're currently leading a global consultation on how to improve talk pages, and we're looking for people that can report on their experiences using (or helping other people to use) wiki talk pages. We'd like to invite you to participate in the consultation, and invite new users to join too.

We thank you in advance for your participation and your help.

Hello SkyGazer 512, I saw your message on the "Requests for Permissions" page. I am sorry I screwed it up, I have pretty much no clue how to use Wikipedia. Also, thank you for the cookies! I believe someone with your stature on Wikipedia would be able to help me "move" a Wikipedia page or re title the page, I was reading something about being autoconfimed but I don't believe I have the qualifications for that. As you might've seen my try to do, I've been trying to rename the title for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KRFC, but am not able to do so. I am a volunteer with the radio station and was asked by our Executive Director to change the title. The radio station name was recently changed and we want to differentiate from another radio station that has similar call letters mentioned in the "talk" section of KRFC's page. That is all we need to be done. Thank you and I'll remove that listing from the "Requests for Permissions" page. Thank you again for the nice message and the cookies! P.S. I know nothing about code so sorry if I screwed up the code at the end of this message. --krfc-ryano

Hey there Krfc-ryano and thanks for leaving me a message. Please don't worry about not making the edit request at the proper place; newer editors don't know everything on their first edit and that's perfectly fine. :-) I'm typing up a reply to the rest of your questions right now; it may take a bit of time, because there's quite a bit to explain. Cheers, --SkyGazer 512 My talk page 02:46, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
Ok, Krfc-ryano, so here's the deal. Moving pages does require autoconfirmed status, which is automatically added to user accounts that have had an account for 4 days and made 10 edits. You just now reached that status, so you could technically move the page now. However, I would very strongly advise that you do not do so. If you volunteer for the radio station and were asked by your Executive Director to change the title, then you have what we call a conflict of interest with the subject. Therefore, you should not be making edits to the article or moving it yourself. This page describes what a conflict of interest is and what to do if you have one in detail. this section in particular would probably be useful for you, although the guide as a whole mostly talks about the process of requesting edits, not page moves. Also, note that if you ever edit for pay, you are required to disclose this on your user page.
Anyways, regarding the moving thing, moves that are obviously uncontroversial can be performed directly or listed at the technical requests page if there are technical restrictions preventing one from doing so. However, if a move is likely to be controversial, it has to go through the requested moves process. This page describes mostly everything you need to know about the requested moves process; how to do it, when to do it, etc. Because you have a conflict of interest with the subject, you should not move the article yourself, and I think that the best way to request a move would be via requested moves (often abbreviated RM), although there may be some other recommended way for editors with a conflict of interest to request a page move that I don't know about. I know little about this particular radio station and what the correct title would be, so apologies for that, but I would recommend you at least glance through this page, which is the policy page for what the title of articles should generally be. this section of the policy page may be particular useful for a case like this; pages are not always moved to their official title, but rather a common and recognizable title.
No problem regarding the welcome and the cookies; I'm glad it helped you out. Nope, you did not screw up the code at the end of your message; you signed correctly! I know I've just thrown a ton of information and policies at you, so if you need me to explain anything in particular, please let me know and I'd be happy to try to do so. I do hope this helps you out at least some.   Cheers, --SkyGazer 512 My talk page 03:01, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for all the information and the kind words! I will look into more information on this subject. Cheers! --krfc-ryano My talk page 22:46, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi Krfc-ryano! In my original post, I was trying to say that you are very strongly discouraged from moving the page yourself and that you should open a discussion via the requested moves process instead. I see that you've tried to directly move the page twice and were reverted both times. Now, an administrator has protected the page so that only administrators can move it. Therefore, your only option now is to discuss the move using the requested move process I was talking about. This link gives you all the details on how to open such a discussion. As this page points out, editors should not edit pages they have a conflict of interest with directly, which applies to moving too. :-) I hope you find this response helpful and feel free to let me know if you have any questions! Thanks, --SkyGazer 512 My talk page 15:07, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.17

Hello SkyGazer 512,

News
Discussions of interest
  • Two elements of CSD G6 have been split into their own criteria: R4 for redirects in the "File:" namespace with the same name as a file or redirect at Wikimedia Commons (Discussion), and G14 for disambiguation pages which disambiguate zero pages, or have "(disambiguation)" in the title but disambiguate a single page (Discussion).
  • {{db-blankdraft}} was merged into G13 (Discussion)
  • A discussion recently closed with no consensus on whether to create a subject-specific notability guideline for theatrical plays.
  • There is an ongoing discussion on a proposal to create subject-specific notability guidelines for chemicals and organism taxa.
Reminders
  • NPR is not a binary keep / delete process. In many cases a redirect may be appropriate. The deletion policy and its associated guideline clearly emphasise that not all unsuitable articles must be deleted. Redirects are not contentious. See a classic example of the templates to use. More templates are listed at the R template index. Reviewers who are not aware, do please take this into consideration before PROD, CSD, and especially AfD because not even all admins are aware of such policies, and many NAC do not have a full knowledge of them.
NPP Tools Report
  • Superlinks – allows you to check an article's history, logs, talk page, NPP flowchart (on unpatrolled pages) and more without navigating away from the article itself.
  • copyvio-check – automatically checks the copyvio percentage of new pages in the background and displays this info with a link to the report in the 'info' panel of the Page curation toolbar.
  • The NPP flowchart now has clickable hyperlinks.

I hope I didn't give the impression of nagging. If there was any negative undertone, it was jealousy! --John Maynard Friedman (talk)
@John Maynard Friedman: No worries; I didn't get the impression or a negative undertone at all. I hardly think that there's a reason to be jealous; Milton Keynes is a very tough one to get to GA considering, A. it's an extremely broad topic, B. before you started significantly improving it it was already long and there were major issues with it, and C. it's edited quite frequently so you may have people adding unsourced info or something similar every now and then that needs reverting. Cheers, --SkyGazer 512 My talk page 13:53, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
If other level 5 vital articles in England articles can do it, so can I. (I wrote 'we' but the other main contributors seem to have fallen by the wayside.) Candida blankii

FYI, I wrote it to defeat the delete; that whole kerfuffle started because one editor got irritated and retaliatory when I undid his deletion of a link to the article. A silly and petulant reason to start an AFD, IMO. 7&6=thirteen () 23:18, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

@7&6=thirteen: Yeah, I'm watching stalking your talk page, so I saw the discussion about it, which is where I even found the article. :P It's great that you were able to change an article that had nearly no content to such an interesting and substantial article. I agree with you that the rationale was not a valid reason to delete. However, I understand the reasoning behind the nomination considering how bad of shape the article was in before, despite disagreeing, and not doing a BEFORE search is an understandable mistake for someone who may not be very experienced with AfD. My first AfD nomination was actually for a notable village and ended up in a speedy keep as well. :-) Keep up the good work! Cheers, --SkyGazer 512 My talk page 02:44, 28 March 2019 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of The Crossing Dead

The article The Crossing Dead has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unremarkable subject, fails WP:GNG

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. -Liancetalk/contribs 02:38, 28 March 2019 (UTC)

@Liance: Oh gosh, I created that article a long time ago... before I was familiar enough with what exactly a reliable source is and the specifics of notability guidelines. Now that I've gotten more experience with such guidelines, I know it is definitely not notable. :-) I was actually going to G7 the page a few months ago but then I forgot about that, as usual. Anyways, I've searched quite a bit and I'm not able to find anything that is both reliable and significant, so I have gone ahead and G7d the article so that it can be speedy deleted. Thank you for noticing that the article was not notable and notifying me. Cheers, --SkyGazer 512 My talk page 02:50, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
