Välbe edit

Thanks for the information, Sam! Do you know if they both now have Estonian citizenship? If so, then, of course, she should stay listed as "Välbe". Otherwise, I don't know.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 18:24, 15 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Not being an expert on the subject of skiers, I'm going to leave this to you folks to sort out :) If you jointly decide that the article should be moved to Yelena Vyalbe (which is exact romanization from Russian) and need my help, just drop me a note, I'll take care of it.
As for the Kruglovs and "Buligine", I'm gonna straighten them up right now. Thanks again!—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 18:46, 15 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Spurt edit

Regarding the 2006-07 BWC edit: I admit I "shot from the hip" on this one, but I had a distinct feeling that the word is sometimes used to some extent like I "extrapolated" after all:

From The Collaborative International Dictionary of English v.0.48 :
    Spurt \Spurt\, v. i. [imp. & p. p. Spurted; p. pr. & vb. n. Spurting.]
To make a sudden and violent exertion, as in an emergency. [1913 Webster]

From WordNet (r) 2.0 :
    spurt
2: move or act with a sudden increase in speed or energy [syn: forge, spirt]

That clarification aside, your change to a more common English phrase might have been a Good Thing, I guess. (On the other hand, we should also use the whole of the language. Whatever...) :-) --Wernher 22:08, 18 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Follow-up to Sapporo edit

FYI. I just wanted to let you know I have a user who will be able to download images for fair use for the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2007. His name is User:Jared and he put in all of the action pictures for the article Cross country skiing at the 2006 Winter Olympics. He might be able to get them in. Also, I updated the Top 10 listing for the ski jumping part of the event, along with the cross country and nordic combined parts. Also, why did they award the Holmenkollen medal to King Harald V and Queen Sonja? That was a bit of a surprise if you ask me. I thought Simon Ammann of Switzerland or Odd-Bjørn Hjelmeset of Norway should have received it. Chris 00:40, 21 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I added Estil and Hjelmeset to the list as well. If the King and Queen are not winners of the award, then I will remove it ASAP. Thanks again. Chris 13:26, 21 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
That is fine. That means I won't have to make any more adjustments until one of the active skiers wins again at the Holmenkollen, the Worlds, or the Winter Olympics. Chris 13:39, 21 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

world cup edit

That last edit of yours seems to be contrary to the rules as stated in the article. The article states that D1 is Pakistan if it qualifies, and is otherwise whatever team replaces Pakistan; and that D2 is West Indies if it qualifies, and is otherwise whatever team replaces the West Indies. So Ireland should be D1 irrespective of who finished top of the group. Hesperian 11:46, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Oh, I see. Then you just need to finish the job by fixing the table at the top of 2007 Cricket World Cup#Super 8. Hesperian 11:59, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I see that you're not using Template:Limited overs international in the group stage and super 8 article, even though both looks the same. So thought that if you used this it would be easier. If not, just ignore this then.--Thugchildz 04:45, 28 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Nice to be home :) edit

Hi Sam! Nice to hear from you. it's very nice to be back around again. I have indeed been getting involved in some heavy duty vandalism-reverting (500 edits in two days, or near enough...), just to ease myself back into the swing of things. I have proved (to myself) that it is possible to do effective vandal-whacking using Special:Recentchanges even if a pronounced lack of admin tools doesn't make things easier. I can't even guess what multiball is, although I'll wager it's painful... Hope you're bearing up alright -- what have you been working on recently? Twenty20 "multiball" silliness edit

Please do not make sly jokes at the expense of wikipedians who are obsessive Cricket fans who have themselves had sly jokes made at their expense, as you did in Talk:Twenty20. It may be considered vandalism. Cricket is silly enough already...

And here's two good examples of this:

Check out Talk:Twenty20 for more.

David Stevens (cricketer) edit

Hi Sam. I've added to prod to this cricketer because he seems not to exist. On the What Links Here lists there are various links to your articles in your sandboxes for the 2005 cricket season, but I think in each case they refer to Darren Stevens (cricketer), not David. Biathlon at the 2006 Winter Olympics - Men's individual edit

Hey there. I know you contributed a lot to this article, and it looks very good. I would like to know if you could do me a favor. I'm trying to reformat it and I think it may eventually make GA status if we can increase the prose right. Anyway, you'll see that I redid the first table so that it contains all the data, so that 5 tables would not be necessary. I'd like to know if you had the time to transfer ranks from each of the tables below the main one into the corresponding open spots on the upper table. It may be a tedious job, but now that I have the formating right, it shouldn't be too bad. As well, do you think that it would look better if the Final time column and the Difference column were morphed like on the Russian version of the page? Give me your thoughts, and if you cannot do it, no sweat. Jaredt  22:30, 16 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

1997 World Athletics Championships edit

Sam, I notice that you have started to fix up the 1997 WC page! I had commenced this on my own, but now I see you have inserted the coding for the men's track, so I will let you continue. Unless you are not going to complete this? If you're not, let me know, otherwise I'll leave you to it.Canada Jack 03:26, 27 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Took a look at what you have done and looks good! I went to the IAAF site and double-checked the results and the only corrections needed was to add a few PBs, and clarifications of two records. The women's 4x100 gold was an AR, so I took out the NR and WL. Also, the men's 400 hurdles won by Diagana was erroneously listed as a NR, his time was a WL, but he had a faster time run several years earlier.
So, a grand total of one mistake, Sam. Pretty good I'd say! Thanks to you all the WC pages now look the same and we (finally) have actual marks set at the 1997 WC. Canada Jack 20:05, 27 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I took out the WL just because it was not so impressive. Setting a CR and an AR are both impressive feats, far more impressive than a WL (which, by definition, occurs at least once a year). I'd be inclined not to bother saying "WL" if a CR is set, or an AR. Maybe when a NR is set. With all those records, it starts to sound like that McWhirter quote when Bannister ran sub 4 for the mile, "Ladies and gentlemen, here is the result of event 9, the one-mile: 1st, No. 41, R.G. Bannister, Amateur Athletic Association and formerly of Exeter and Merton Colleges, Oxford, with a time which is a new meeting and track record, and which - subject to ratification - will be a new English Native, British National, All-Comers, European, British Empire, and World Record. The time was 3..."

Anyway, I thought the two records were sufficient but that was just my call. If you feel WL needs to be there, go ahead and put it back in. Canada Jack 20:25, 27 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Featured List of the Day Experiment edit

There have been a series of proposals to initiate a Featured List of the Day on the main page. Numerous proposals have been put forth. After the third one failed, I audited all WP:FL's in order to begin an experiment in my own user space that will hopefully get it going. Today, it commences at WP:LOTD. Afterwards I created my experimental page, a new proposal was set forth to do a featured list that is strikingly similar to my own which is to do a user page experimental featured list, but no format has been confirmed and mechanism set in place. I continue to be willing to do the experiment myself and with this posting it commences. Please submit any list that you would like to have considered for list of the day in the month of January 2008 by the end of this month to WP:LOTD and its subpages. You may submit multiple lists for consideration.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 15:26, 17 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Handball disambiguation edit

Sam, I agree with your idea of having the word "handball" resolve to the disamb page. That is most probably the right place that search engines like google or yahoo should send searchers to since there are so many different sports and interpretations. Within the wikipedia itself, where specific words are linked to a page, those should still work as originally intended if they pointed to their intended target, but shouldn't we leave it to the original authors to straighten those out? I did as you suggested - reading a few dozen of the pages that link to "handball" but it is nearly impossible to tell exactly which sport the author intended without taking some kind of bias towards one sport or another. For example, many of the pages I read are simply listing sports that are offered at a particular location (club, college, university, etc.), or sports that are played by individuals (as in biographies). If it requires knowledge that only the author would have to know which sport is intended, then the disamb page is the right place for it to go until the author clarifies. Until the author makes the edit, the reader of the article will be rightly sent to a page that clearly identifies the ambiguity of what the author has written. Does this make sense? I am always willing to learn, so teach me some more.

BTW, when I look up the word "handball" in Merriam-Webster, there are two entries: "handball" dated 1873 which refers to the game found here as "American Handball", and "team handball" added to the dictionary in 1970. I have not done an exhaustive search of other dictionaries to see how they deal with this, but just find it supports one view point. Note also that the "American Handball" page used to be titled just "Handball" in wikipedia until someone who wanted handball to resolve to "Team Handball" made a change.

Think about it: nobody in America refers to it by "American Handball"; it is just "Handball" here. Only in other countries where they have a game they call handball do they need a way to differentiate it. Why is it "Team Handball" instead of "Non-American Handball" or "Euro Handball"? Speedy deletion nomination of Template:Sri Lanka abbr edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Thank you for experimenting with Wikipedia. Your test worked, and the page that you created has been or soon will be deleted. Please use the sandbox for any other tests you want to do. Take a look at the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. IPA norske idrettsutøvere edit

Hei Sam!

Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity edit

Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in over one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, and that you have not been inactive for a three year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. Fair Play For Women notability concerns edit

Hello, I'm bringing to your attention the notability concerns with this article. As it stands it fully fails WP:NORG. That notability standard requires WP:SIGCOV in multiple secondary sources. Having members of the org be quoted in articles would not count towards this standard. I can tell you that if you didn't seem to be an experienced editor I would have just moved the article to draftspace for incubation. However, I figured I'd extend to you the benefit of a doubt. Cheers Sulfurboy (talk) 21:49, 22 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Fair Play For Women moved to draftspace edit

Per your comment on my talk page I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page.
