WikiCup 2013 March newsletter

We are halfway through round two. Pool A sees the strongest competition, with five out of eight of its competitors scoring over 100, and Pool H is lagging, with half of its competitors yet to score. WikiCup veterans lead overall; Pool A's   Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) (2010's winner) leads overall, with poolmate   Miyagawa (submissions) (a finalist in 2011 and 2012) not far behind. Pool F's   Casliber (submissions) (a finalist in 2010, 2011 and 2012) is in third. The top two scorers in each pool, as well as the next highest 16 scorers overall, will progress to round three at the end of April.

Today has seen a number of Easter-themed did you knows from WikiCup participants, and March has seen collaboration from contestants with WikiWomen's History Month. It's great to see the WikiCup being used as a locus of collaboration; if you know of any collaborative efforts going on, or want to start anything up, please feel free to use the WikiCup talk page to help find interested editors. As well as fostering collaboration, we're also seeing the Cup encouraging the improvement of high-importance articles through the bonus point system. Highlights from the last month include GAs on physicist Niels Bohr (  Hawkeye7 (submissions)), on the European hare (  Cwmhiraeth (submissions)), on the constellation Circinus (  Keilana (submissions) and   Casliber (submissions)) and on the Third Epistle of John (  Cerebellum (submissions)). All of these subjects were covered on at least 50 Wikipedias at the beginning of the year and, subsequently, each contribution was awarded at least three times as many points as normal.

Wikipedians who enjoy friendly competition may be interested in participating in April's wikification drive. While wikifying an article is typically not considered "significant work" such that it can be claimed for WikiCup points, such gnomish work is often invaluable in keeping articles in shape, and is typically very helpful for new writers who may not be familiar with formatting norms.

A quick reminder: now, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the review only. See your submissions' page for details. This will hopefully make updating submission pages a little less tedious. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sockpuppet investigation - CPVIO

Thanks for your message. Having now seen what was on that user page I can understand why it happened. Moreover, the person in question has behaved, shall we say, a little oddly; people are now alerted to the problems. This may be a case where advice alone may not be productive but we shall see. I would always be happy to assist in this sort of thing, especially where a user has chosen to involve me as this one did, so no harm done. --AJHingston (talk) 21:56, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

From the beginning I had the idea that it was in fact an attack on my work here on Wikipedia. Although CPVIO started with attacking an article that was not of my hand, I could shake of that feeling. Partly, because his user page had a long list of articles of my hand. In fact, 22 out of 30 files are from my hand. And indeed, I have clashed with OrenBochman before. First on several articles about Michelin starred restaurants, where he attacked my strange English (I use British English). Later when I AfD an article of his hand about his mother. I noticed that he was very unpolite and hard to work with. So now the whole CPYVIO-attack makes sense. It is really sad mr. Hingston was blamed for it at first, but I hope he can forgive us now the case is solved and the real culprit is caught. The Banner talk 00:18, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

Have you checked the Voyager companion? Dunno if that has the same level of production info quality that the TNG companion does, or if you've already used it.
At some point soon I'm hoping to get back to working on Star Trek Generations, and then that just leaves Insurrection, Nemesis and the two NuTrek articles below FA for the Star Trek films. Characters

List of minor recurring characters in Star Trek: The Next Generation is completely awash in fancruft, and almost totally lacking in sources. I see no real out-of-universe notability, but somehow everyone else thinks it's salvageable. BOTF

It'd be really neat if maybe you'd be interested in improving the page Star Trek: The Next Generation: Birth of the Federation?

There's probably a good number of secondary sources out there online and archived news articles and books, etc., that could be used as references to expand the page.

Then, it'd be a cool resource for future online researchers.

Whaddya think?

Non-free rationale for File:CleaverJetJPEG.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:CleaverJetJPEG.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. NtheP (talk) 19:00, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 April newsletter

We are a week into Round 3, but it is off to a flying start, with   Sven Manguard (submissions) claiming for the high-importance Portal:Sports and Portal:Geography (which are the first portals ever awarded bonus points in the WikiCup) and   Cwmhiraeth (submissions) claiming for a did you know of sea, the highest scoring individual did you know article ever submitted for the WikiCup. Round 2 saw very impressive scores at close; first place   Casliber (submissions) and second place   Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) both scored over 1000 points; a feat not seen in Round 2 since 2010. This, in part, has been made possible by the change in the bonus points rules, but is also testament to the quality of the competition this year. Pool C and Pool G were most competitive, with three quarters of participants making it to Round 3, while Pool D was the least, with only the top two scorers making it through. The lowest qualifying score was 123, significantly higher than last year's 65, 2011's 41 or even 2010's 100.

The next issue of The Signpost is due to include a brief update on the current WikiCup, comparing it to previous years' competitions. This may be of interest to current WikiCup followers, and may help bring some more new faces into the community. We would also like to note that this round includes an extra competitor to the 32 advertised, who has been added to a random pool. This extra inclusion seems to have been the fairest way to deal with a small mistake made before the beginning of this round, but should not affect the competition in a large way. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please feel free to contact one of the judges.

A rules clarification: content promoted between rounds can be claimed in the round after the break, but not the round before. The case in point is content promoted on 29/30 April, which may be claimed in this round. Good luck! Articles you might like to edit, from SuggestBot

We are currently running a study on the effects of adding additional information to SuggestBot's suggestions. Participation in the study is voluntary. Should you wish to not participate in the study, or have questions or concerns, you can find contact information on the SuggestBot study page.

IMPORTANT CHANGES: We have modified the selection of articles SuggestBot suggests and altered the design to incorporate more information about the articles, as described in this explanation.

Note: All columns in this table are sortable, allowing you to rearrange the table so the articles most interesting to you are shown at the top. All images have mouse-over popups with more information.

Changes to SuggestBot's suggestions

We have changed the number of suggested articles and which categories they are selected from. The number of stubs has been greatly reduced, the number of articles needing sources doubled, and two new categories added (orphans and unencyclopaedic articles). We have also modified the layout of the suggestions and added sortable columns with various types of information about each article. The first two columns are:

Views/Day
Daily average number of views an article's had over the past 14 days.
Quality
Predicted article quality on a 1- to 3-star scale. Placing your cursor over the stars should give you a pop-up describing the article's quality (Low/Medium/High), current assessment class, and predicted assessment class.

The method we use to predict article quality also allows us to assess whether an article might need specific types of work in order to improve its quality. The work needed might not correspond to cleanup tags added to the article, since our method is not based on those. We have added five columns reflecting this work assessment, where a red X indicates improvement is needed. Placing your cursor over an X should give you a pop-up with a short description of the work needed. The five columns seek to answer the following five questions:

Content
Is more content needed?
Headings
Does this article have an appropriate section structure?
Images
Is the number of illustrative images about right?
Links
Does this article link to enough other Wikipedia articles?
Sources
For its length, is there an appropriate number of citations to sources in this article?

SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. We appreciate that you have signed up to receive suggestions regularly, your contributions make Wikipedia better — thanks for helping!

If you have feedback on how to make SuggestBot better, please let us know on SuggestBot's talk page. Regards from Nettrom (talk), SuggestBot's caretaker. -- SuggestBot (talk) 23:38, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

Star Trek: Insurrection

Hi Miyagawa, I'm beginning the copy-edit you requested to the above article at the GOCE Request page. Please feel free to contact me, and to correct of revert my edits if I'm doing something I shouldn't. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 11:59, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

Done. I couldn't fully check the references in "Reception" because they are all referenced to Highbeam, which I don't have an account with, and I don't really have time to chase around for free versions. However they're fine for GA. You said you wanted to learn about the changes I made; you can check these by looking at the page's history here. Good luck with your GA nomination. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 03:36, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

WP:FOOD Needs You!

Hi there Miyagawa! I've noticed you have yourself listed as a member of the Food and Drink Wikiproject. Unfortunately it looks like the project has been slowly sliding into inactivity except for a couple of people. That makes me a sad potato, and nobody likes a sad potato amirite?

If you'd like to turn my frown upside down, can you do two small things?

First off, go here and add {{Tick}} ( Y) next to your name if you're still part of the project.

Second, go to the project talkpage and participate in a discussion about how to make the project more active, and how to go about making articles in our area of interest a lot better.

You don't want to make me cry, do you? Potatoes have a lot of eyes you know. So come on, join in! :)

How you can help

  1. I've reformatted Portal:Star Trek/Selected article so it only includes WP:GAs.
  2. If you want to pitch in, you can help out by filling in the rest of the slots at Portal:Star Trek/Selected article with WP:GAs from Portal:Star Trek/Quality content.
  3. Ideally, all slots at Portal:Star Trek/Selected article will have an associated and relevant image, which must be free-use from Wikimedia Commons.
  4. Oh and all portal blurbs should have no refs, no inline cites, those are included instead back in the article itself.
  5. The text is taken from the WP:LEAD intro sect of the articles themselves, and should be approximately all the same length for uniformity.

Thoughts? — Cirt (talk) 20:44, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

At least twenty (20), which is the number of blank slots I've added so far. Ideally, any WP:GAs are open for addition. The more of them there are, the more dynamic the portal will be upon refresh each time. — Cirt (talk) 20:48, 25 May 2013 (UTC)
Okay, thanks very much! — Cirt (talk) 21:01, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

Star Trek Portal

How're you coming along with this?

I've left some notes on the talk page at Portal talk:Star Trek, for ways to help filling in entries.

Are you going to be able to help with those?

If we get all those done, this could be ready for Featured Portal consideration quite soon, actually.

Keep me posted, — Cirt (talk) 18:14, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

Okay I archived all the stuff that was addressed, if you check back at Portal talk:Star Trek you should see the only stuff left to finish up. — Cirt (talk) 21:00, 3 June 2013 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for June 4

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Star Trek: The Next Generation (season 2), you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Cruise, Hans Beimler and Guinan (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

WP Dogs in the Signpost

The WikiProject Report would like to focus on WikiProject Dogs for a Signpost article. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Multiple editors will have an opportunity to respond to the interview questions, so be sure to sign your answers. If you know anyone else who would like to participate in the interview, please share this with them. Have a great day. –Mabeenot (talk) 22:56, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for your review of Template:Did you know nominations/Fortifications of Gibraltar (and I do intend to go for GA!) - could you possibly address the COI/promotional aspect as required by the current restrictions, otherwise the review won't be accepted by the queue builders. WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre

Hello! Now, some of you might have already received a similar message a little while ago regarding the Recruitment Centre, so if you have, there is no need to read the rest of this. This message is directed to users who have reviewed over 15 Good article nominations and are not part of WikiProject Good articles (the first message I sent out went to only WikiProject members).

So for those who haven't heard about the Recruitment Centre yet, you may be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around it (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers:

  • Recruiters: The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet this criteria. If we don't get at least 5-10 recruiters to start off with (at the time this message was sent out, 2 recruiters have volunteered), the Recruitment Centre will not open. If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read the process and add your name to the list of recruiters. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the process section is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available".
  • Co-Director: The current Director for the centre is me (Dom497). Another user that would be willing to help with some of the tasks would be helpful. Tasks include making sure recruiters are doing what they should be (teaching!), making sure all recruitments are archived correctly, updating pages as needed, answering any questions, and distributing the feedback form. If interested, please contact me (Dom497).
  • Nominators, please read this: If you are not interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still help. In some cases a nominator may have an issue with an "inexperienced" editor (the recruitee) reviewing one of their nominations. To minimize the chances of this happening, if you are fine with a recruitee reviewing one of your nominations under the supervision of the recruiter, please add your name to the list at the bottom of this page. By adding your name to this list, chances are that your nomination will be reviewed more quickly as the recruitee will be asked to choose a nomination from the list of nominators that are OK with them reviewing the article.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing this program bring new reviewers to the Good article community and all the positive things it will bring along.

A message will be sent out to all recruiters regarding the date when the Recruitment Centre will open when it is determined. The message will also contain some further details to clarify things that may be a bit confusing.--Dom497 (talk)
