Why did I come up with this
editWhack! You've been whacked with a wet trout. Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know that you did something silly. |
You have been trouted for: Finally, another person has trouted you. The reason is for trouting yourself. How do you even trout yourself? Why am I talking about slapping Wikipedians with fish? Who knows. Anyways, when I get the opportunity, I might go an actually trout myself, to see how you do it. And why, when, how and where did this trouting thing start? It would be like slapping each other with potatoes. And why trout? Why not salmon? Why not sardines? And speaking of sardines, how do you slap anyone with a sardine? Why don't we start using land animals? We should definitely start elephanting each other. And now to the actual Wikipedia application, why are you trouting yourself anyways? Or "whaling" yourself? Better question: Why are you still reading this? There's a lot more things to do that are actually productive. And why am I still writing? Who knows. I don't. Now onto another topic, I guess. Would it be true that the more people do anti vandalism tasks, the less useful newer anti vandals are? Are cats actually disguised dogs? Can trouts walk? Actually, thinking about that question more closely, I have determined that trouts probably can't walk, answering my own question that I asked above. – AssumeGoodWraith (talk | contribs) 16:06, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
- @AssumeGoodWraith — lol finally. I’ve been waiting for someone other than myself to trout me, for realizing my silly mistakes before me.
- But anyway, here are some answers you shall see:
- 1 — Trout yourself using
{{trout}}
! It’s as easy as 1-2-3! - 2 — You talk about slapping Wikipedians with fish because you saw my self-trouts, and, during that moment, it was relevant to you.
- 3 — This trouting thing started in 1995, when IRC just got started. Read more at Wikipedia:Whacking with a wet trout#History. Trouting on Wikipedia, however, started around September 30, 2006 (see here).
- 4 — The trout was probably IRC’s optimal fish for slapping. I think salmon would be cooked too quickly, and sardines would be canned before you could say “fish”.
- 5 — To slap someone with a sardine, take a canned sardine, hold it by the tail, and brandish it across someone’s face like a whip.
- 6 — We don’t use land animals, as that is less gross. Aquatic animals give the benefit of a slimy feeling generated from being in the water.
- 7 — I trout myself for better visibility. The template
{{self-trout}}
or{{self-whale}}
doesn’t seem to get the message to me. - 8 — I read this, because, like answer #2, I think that, during this moment, it’s relevant.
- 9 — Some are discouraged, some are encouraged. Like some anti-vandals such as Serols and discospinster beat me to reverting vandalism continuously, but I still am not discouraged.
- 10 — Cats and dogs share the same ancestor, a microscopic speck. It lived in the bottom of the ocean and ate chemical soup being served hot and fresh made from gnarly space ingredients back when it was raining rocks or whatever.
- 11 — Trouts can’t walk, but there is a species of catfish that is a fish, and can walk.
- Hopefully, you do not mind these answers. — 3PPYB6 — TALK — CONTRIBS — 16:54, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

Child prodigy revision
editHello 3PPYB6! I've seen (if I understand the process corecctly) that you have approved of this revision of the Child prodigy article. While the resulting definition fits perfectly well to my understanding of English, I did not see it supported by that part of the sources I can see. Do you think otherwise? If not, I would like to undo that change because that definition has been controversial in the past and I would prefer to forestall a dispute. Thanks a lot for your input! Teahouse Host
editThank you for volunteering as a Host at the Teahouse. Wikipedia is a community of people working together to make knowledge free. You are an important part of that effort! By joining as a Host, and by following our expectations, you are helping new users to get started here at Wikipedia, and aiding more experienced users who just have a question about how something works. We appreciate your willingness to help!
Here are some links you may find helpful as a Host:
- Useful scripts you can install to make responding easier,
- templates to use and, of course:
- the question forum itself.
- @Nick Moyes — Firstly, sorry for the late reply. Secondly, I’m still not a fully experienced user, so I might have some questions other (senior) hosts will answer for me. Is it fine if I ask questions for hosts, and be a host at the same time, or is it one or the other? Thanks. — 3PPYB6 — TALK — CONTRIBS — 14:50, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
- Absolutely! I still ask the odd question at the Teahouse myself, too. (If we can't help one another, who can we help?) I don't think any one is ever a fully experienced user - I know I'm not. The key thing is knowing what your skills are and what your limits are, and only offering to answer someone's question if you can genuinely help them with the answer. Indeed, we expect people not to answer questions they can't answer! It would only serve to frustrate the questioner, whilst making those who might skim through the Teahouse pages think the issue had been addressed when it had not. Best wishes, Nick Moyes (talk) 15:54, 5 February 2022 (UTC)

2 things
editHello! I have 2 things to say to you, 1, why are you self-trouting yourself so much? 2, are you really on a wikibreak? Because the Wikibreak log on your userpage seems to be a joke (the view full log is a rick roll which is honestly the funniest rick roll I've experienced so far, and the "diff" link is to a really old revision of Jimbo Wales' userpage). Also, I noticed that you made an edit on your test account. Why didn't you use your main account for that? ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 00:43, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Blaze Wolf — Hello!
- So, for #1: It appears as though I notice my mistakes before anyone else does. :(
- For #2: I'm on a semi-wikibreak, I'm editing from a different device, but my primary one has a bug that does not let the Vector skin show up. The template is kind of humorous though, as because I have no proof, I resort to pseudo-legitimacy to make it look like there is proof.
- Finally, for #3: If nobody notices my request for confirmation, then I was prepared to make a lot of edits on that account so that it would become autoconfirmed in the worst-case scenario.
- And, congratulations on being my first rickroll. — 3PPYB6 — TALK — CONTRIBS — 00:50, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
- Glad I was your first rickroll (unfortunately I didn't get to hear the song because the page loaded slowly and I got an ad). You don't have to trout yourself for every mistake. To my knowledge I've only self-trouted myself once (and it was for a pretty silly mistake), every other trout has been from other users (mainly inappropriate trouts which has lead to me removing the trout button from my talk page). Also, your request for confirmation will eventually be noticed. I have an alt account myself (Blaze Fire Wolf which is technically older than my main account because I had initially created that one to edit Wikipedia, forgot about it, and then made this one) and I'm keeping it non-confirmed for the time being in case I need to test anything that being confirmed or extended-confirmed might prevent. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 00:55, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Blaze Wolf — So Fastily just noticed my request for rollback, so the test account is going to be confirmed very soon. Also, per your advice, I should probably just express a little remorse and then move on. — 3PPYB6 — TALK — CONTRIBS — 01:02, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

- I really don't want to block you, and I'm sorry that you've had TNT do it for you. I'd rather you accepted that you made a mistake, learnt from it, and became a better editor because of it, rather than running away from it. We all make mistakes.
- You're bouncing from one "solution" to this situation to another "solution" within minutes without taking the time to consider what you're doing. Advice
editHello, 3PPYB6,
You made a mistake, a big mistake. We all do that. But it was repaired. Now you have requested a self-imposed 6 month block.
If you change your mind about the block some time down the road, please use email to have a discussion about lifting the block. Do not create new accounts. Doing that will lead you into sockpuppetry which will be much harder to get yourself out of. I know it's difficult to face that you made a mistake (I have made a share of my own errors), but don't let it lead you into further behavior that will be much more difficult to undo.
Take a complete break from Wikipedia as you will be tempted to edit if you spend a lot of time here which would violate your block. You don't want one mistake lead to an even bigger mistake which you can not as easily come back from. Good luck with your break. Liz Read! Talk! 18:11, 2 March 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, and don't be so hard on yourself. Nothing was broken irreparably. It was all back to normal in like five minutes. Catfish Jim and the soapdish 18:22, 2 March 2022 (UTC)
Unblock discussion
editHi 3PPYB6, we received your UTRS request (#55475). I've re-enabled your talk page access, but I'm a little hesitant to unblock you just yet. Although this was a self-requested block, the disruption caused prior to it was heading in the direction of a "block for cause"—I'm not just talking about the mistake, but the aftermath too. Like many editors, I've failed to keep my cool plenty of times, but a certain amount of self-reflection really is required, and I don't want to be back in a similar situation a few months down the line. -- TNT (talk • she/her) 21:26, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

- @TheresNoTime — It was semi-block for cause, I agree… I had partially requested to be blocked because of what I had done. — 3PPYB6 — TALK — CONTRIBS — 21:27, 2 March 2022 (UTC)
- I had specifically stated for you to only unblock me if you wanted to. If you decide not to, I will simply wait and let the block expire. I’ve done too much on this project… — 3PPYB6 — TALK — CONTRIBS — 21:29, 2 March 2022 (UTC)
- I disagree, you were heading towards a block with the jumping between solutions—you definitely weren't at the point of needing a block. You're not the first to make a mistake like this, and you won't be the last! 🙂 What I need is for you to take a deep breath, relax, and listen to what we're saying. You're no longer in trouble, it took minutes to fix, but you can't really go running off every time you make a mistake -- TNT (talk • she/her) 21:33, 2 March 2022 (UTC)
- @TheresNoTime — What I had wished for was to be temporarily blocked because of “vandalism” or “disruptive editing”… after all, I did (unintentionally) vandalize about 100 pages… you do realize how crazy that is, right? — 3PPYB6 — TALK — CONTRIBS — 21:36, 2 March 2022 (UTC)
- And for clarification, the disruption itself (massRollback) did not merit a block, but the “vanishing, retiring, semi-retiring” thing was what would have escalated it. — 3PPYB6 — TALK — CONTRIBS — 21:37, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

- ( Peanut gallery comment) Y'know, the "rollback all"/"rollback selected" thing has always been a nightmare of mine. I selectively massrollbacked a checkuser a while ago to correct a mixup at SPI, because I knew he'd understand, but I was terrified I'd accidentally hit "rollback all" instead. One tip to make this less of a risk (and I realize this won't matter for you right now, but to keep in mind for a few months down the line perhaps) is that if, say, the edits you want to selectively rollback are all in the 10 most recent for that person, you can add
?limit=10
to the end of the URL (or&limit=10
if there's already a question mark in the URL). The script can't rollback any edits that aren't on the page, so the "worst-case scenario" would be it hitting all 10, instead of 50 or 100.Really, though... hey @Writ Keeper, old friend, could "RB ALL: " and "RB SELECTED: ", or something like those, perhaps be prepended to the strings in User:Writ_Keeper/Scripts/massRollback.js #L115 and #L121 respectively? -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she/they) 08:16, 3 March 2022 (UTC)- @Tamzin — So at least others have the same problem as me lol. I've never heard of this "massRollback" script, however I do agree that mass tools can indeed cause lots of damage. Why did you revert my sandbox edit?
editThe sandbox is for testing, and revision undos should not mostly be done. Why did you do that?--Kurisumasen (talk) 21:03, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Kurisumasen — Nothing on the sandbox remains indefinitely, and it is frequently cleared. Every hour your edit would have been cleared by a bot anyway. — 3PPYB6 — TALK — CONTRIBS — 21:12, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
- In other words, I was clearing the sandbox, making tests, and then reverting them. — 3PPYB6 — TALK — CONTRIBS — 21:15, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
- I concur. While you can make pretty much any edit to the sandbox (with certain exceptions), clearing the sandbox is perfectly allowed. Inexpiable (talk) 20:17, 4 March 2022 (UTC)Some unsolicited advice
editI didn't chip in in the original discussions because they already struck me as being fast-moving enough as they were, but since I've been pinged here a couple times, I figured I'd give you some thoughts about what happened on the 2nd.
We all make mistakes, including ones that seem stupid and easily avoidable in retrospect; as your edit count increases, the probability of not having messed up in one way or another approaches 0 very quickly. And that's fine. The great thing about wikis is that pretty much everything can be undone or changed by pretty much everyone at pretty much any point in time – that's what makes them work. What matters isn't so much whether we make mistakes, but how we react when we realise we've made one. The German language has a nice compound noun for that (as it does for many things): Fehlerkultur or "error culture" – the manner in which people and institutions manage mistakes. Looking over your talk page archives, your personal Fehlerkultur seems to revolve around trouting (or warning) yourself; while openly acknowledging mistakes is a good thing, I don't think the approach you're currently taking is the most conducive to preventing repeating the same mistakes in the future. When the mass-rollback blunder happened, you responded by trouting yourself, asking to be put in the village stocks, retiring, vanishing, unvanishing, unretiring, asking for – and receiving – a block, asking for – and receiving – an unblock, all within minutes, and while the effects of your test gone wrong hadn't been fully reversed yet. The time spent on litigating all that far exceeded the time it took to fix what was, in the grand scheme of things, a somewhat minor blunder.
In short: It seems like you spiraled pretty badly, and it seems to me that you were trying to punish yourself in some way. Believe me, I get it. I've accidentally mass-rollbacked things I shouldn't have, and I found it absolutely mortifying. But punishment isn't the answer; performing trout-shaped confession and seeking administrator-imposed repentance is rarely a good long-term solution. Here's my suggestion of what to do instead: Next time you mess up, don't add it to a running tally of mistakes; instead, take a breather, and figure out how to fix it, making sure that your solution won't make the issue worse; then fix it. If you can't rectify the issue on your own, ask for help. Once the issue is fixed, take another breather, and think about what caused it; maybe you rushed into something before you fully understood it; maybe you installed a tool you shouldn't have; maybe you got caught up in the heat of the moment and said something without thinking it through first; maybe you just slipped on your mouse and made an unavoidable misclick – it happens, and that's fine. Try to identify and address these causes, instead of beating yourself up over their effects. If your mistake truly was so bad that people want to trout you, or block you, or condemn you to the stocks, they will – you don't need to get ahead of them and do it yourself.
On a final note, and along the lines of my recommendation to not keep a running tally of anything you might have done wrong, I strongly recommend you U1/G7 User:3PPYB6/Bad first impressions; I think I know what you're trying to get at with that page, but it's ripe for being misinterpreted.
I hope you find at least some of this helpful. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need help with something. Take care and happy editing, --Blablubbs (talk) 11:00, 5 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Blablubbs — Alright, I know what you and I are getting at.
- But I'd like to notice something that you might have already: there is a spectrum between people. Like you said, people have "Fehlerkulturen" (sorry for my absolute n00b German). On one hand, you have those absolute narcissists who simply do not admit anything wrong, and have to "manually get slapped off their high horse". On the other side, though, you have people who admit everything wrong before people even notice. Eventually, others might be like "Oh, what was that?" while people like those continue to kill themselves. Long story short, their horses are "slouching, or possibly underground".
- Myself being on that spectrum, I am probably sitting at "for everyone else, perfectly average, but unnecessarily hard on himself".
- Like you said, I have an absolutely chronic habit of self-warning/trouting myself. I think TNT has a point — it makes me seem more disruptive than I actually might be.
- If I ABF (assumed bad faith) on anyone, it would be myself, save for obvious vandals, which might be flawed.
- This kind of self-hatred peppers into my normal editing habits as well. I rarely create articles other than ContentTranslation or via AfC, out of the fear that it would be A7d, PRODed, or AfD'd, I would be reported at ANI, and I would eventually get blocked. I don't even add any substantial content other than rough translations, rather, I fix and tweak minor errors in articles.
- Also, I'm having this weird belief that editing too much in the user talk space signifies that I'm NOTHERE. Do you think otherwise?
- Coming back at the former, I could have just used my alternative account to massRollback the massRollback, and it would have been done easier.
- Slightly different note, I'm on the fence of whether or not I'm in "community good standing", and I would like your input, considering you (and I) are members of the community.
- Respond at your convenience. — 3PPYB6 — TALK — CONTRIBS — 13:19, 5 March 2022 (UTC)
Block timing
editActually, our recent conversation about the ideal length of a first-time block reminded me of an idea I've had which I didn't remember that I had in time for this year's Community Wishlist Survey.
You correctly note that at the shorter end, some block times don't seem like they could really deter determined vandals/edit warriors if they use IPs. Blocked for 24? Wait out the day and jump in again. And maybe they'll similarly wait out 48 hours, a week, whatever ... sometimes they've not let months stop them from going right back at it (The idea of longer blocks, really, is that they'll find somewhere else online to make a pest of themselves and forget about what they did here).
But ... what if instead of blocking them for a set real-time period, we could block them in stop-time, or wiki-time? What if the block timer only ran when they were on Wikipedia? I.e., they would have to work through 24 hours or whatever of actually reading pages before the block expired?
I suppose you'd want to set things up so that they couldn't beat it just by leaving one tab open on the same page for the whole time, or some other things like that. And maybe see which pages they're reading so that they couldn't use a random script to run out the clock (although there might be privacy issues there).
In that case you wouldn't have to choose 24 hours ... maybe in increments of fives or tens.
Maybe we could get some more concrete ideas together before next year's Community Wishlist and see what people think. Daniel Case (talk) 07:38, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Daniel Case — That does seem like a good idea. However, we've still got one problem: shared IP addresses. Imagine if one decides to vandalize Wikipedia, and then get all of the users on that same IP to start reading Wikipedia to hack that "(time here)-length block that only runs on Wikipedia". It's very easy to call that sockpuppetry, because, in some twisted form, it is.
- Long story short, although your idea will always have loopholes built in, it is, ultimately, a better way to deter most IP vandals in the long run. — 3PPYB6 — TALK — CONTRIBS — 13:47, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
- Well, you could apply that to rangeblocks as well ... Daniel Case (talk) 20:32, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Daniel Case — I like that idea; then that will be much harder to override with "multiple computers/readers on the same IP". — 3PPYB6 — TALK — CONTRIBS — 21:09, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
- And during anonblocks, we need to make sure that uninvolved logged-in editors (example: If I'm logged in from a /64'd IPv6 address under anon. only) do not contribute to that timer. — 3PPYB6 — TALK — CONTRIBS — 21:13, 9 March 2022 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – April 2022
editNews and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2022).
- An RfC is open proposing a change to the minimum activity requirements for administrators.
- Access to Special:RevisionDelete has been expanded to include users who have the
deletelogentry

rights. This means that those in the Researcher user group and Checkusers who are not administrators can now access Special:RevisionDelete. The users able to view the special page after this change are the 3 users in the Researcher group, as there are currently no checkusers who are not already administrators. (T301928) - When viewing deleted revisions or diffs on Special:Undelete a back link to the undelete page for the associated page is now present. (T284114)
- Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Procedures § Opening of proceedings has been updated to reflect current practice following a motion.
- A arbitration case regarding Skepticism and coordinated editing has been closed.
- A arbitration case regarding WikiProject Tropical Cyclones has been opened.
- Voting for the Universal Code of Conduct Enforcement guidelines has closed, and the results were that 56.98% of voters supported the guidelines. The results of this vote mean the Wikimedia Foundation Board will now review the guidelines.
I have removed the content because Dangal 2 was launched on 2 April 2022 by all cable and dth and they shows newly programmes included Alif Laila, Kitani Mohabbat Hai, Rehna Hai Teri Palkon Ki Chhaon Mein, Pyaar Ki Luka Chuppi, Phir Laut Aayi Naagin, Baba Aiso Varr Dhoondo, Crime Alert, Basera. - @EpicPupper – Oh wow! I would have expected a stub rating considering how short it is. I don't trust myself to create any new articles directly, but do you think I should change that mentality? I might switch to userspace drafting and then moving it to mainspace on my own to reduce the workload on AfC reviewers. — 3PPYB6 — TALK — CONTRIBS — 13:04, 6 May 2022 (UTC)
- Hiya @3PPYB6! I loved reading through that article. I've re-asessed it as Start class; it was a bit on the high range of Start and the low range of C, and I wanted to stay on the safe side (so no angry elephants come stomping into my talk page ). The prose is top-notch; I would definitely encourage you to get into some more content creation work. It's a lot of fun! You don't need to run through AfC, particularly for submissions like this. Usually the only thing to keep mind of is referencing, and if you have 3 good references that are listed on WP:RSP, you're probably fine. I'm always up to giving feedback on submissions! The only particular thing I fixed on this one was the short description; generally they should be 40 characters or under. Cheers! 🐶 EpicPupper (he/him | talk) 01:14, 7 May 2022 (UTC)

Miklós Horthy Whitewashing
editHello. The removal of this sourced content is supporting the whitewashing by an IP who did not get consensus. The time standing content is directly related to Horthy and is cited evidence that he did infact know about the crimes against the Jewish population happening. Hungarian ultranationalists actively try to downplay and revise Horrhy’s complicity. In makes the article artificially whitewash the subjects image. The content is related to him. It mentions him directly and is sourced unlike what the IP claimed when they deleted sourced content. Why remove it? I hope you may just not have noticed the bigger picture. OyMosby (talk) 01:34, 2 June 2022 (UTC)
- @OyMosby – You are right. This was over 3 months ago, back when I had worse judgment. One small picture is one medium picture, where one big picture is actually just the small picture in another twisted way. Haste makes waste, but that is anti-vandalism work, unfortunately. I'll just say this: when reverting vandalism, I make very few mistakes, but it does happen. This is one of those cases. Now, since I've been completely inactive for the last few days and it has been WP:REVDEL'd as a copyvio, I have completely forgotten about this, as anti-vandalism is very fast. However, next time, I'll make sure to look closely before undoing my own reverts. Thank you. — 3PPYB6 — TALK — CONTRIBS — 01:16, 4 June 2022 (UTC)

- Several areas of improvement collated from community member votes have been identified in the Universal Code of Conduct Enforcement guidelines. The areas of improvement have been sent back for review and you are invited to provide input on these areas.
- Administrators using the mobile web interface can now access Special:Block directly from user pages. (T307341)
- The IP Info feature has been deployed to all wikis as a Beta Feature. Any autoconfirmed user may enable the feature using the "IP info" checkbox under Preferences → Beta features. Autoconfirmed users will be able to access basic information about an IP address that includes the country and connection method. Those with advanced privileges (admin, bureaucrat, checkuser) will have access to extra information that includes the Internet Service Provider and more specific location.
- Remedy 2 of the Rachel Marsden case has been rescinded following a motion. The remedy previously authorised administrators to delete or reduce to a stub, together with their talk pages, articles related to Rachel Marsden when they violate Wikipedia's biographies of living persons policy.
- An arbitration case regarding WikiProject Tropical Cyclones has been closed.
Modification to standard notification message format
editI'm not the user in question, just an IP address hop, but I feel compelled to point out that you don't seem to link to the actual edit in your message that you sent about a non-NPOV reversion. The link supplied just points to a disambiguation page.
Messages like the above would be more helpful if that information was included, to cover situations where one person made multiple edits to a single article.
I replied separately to the message itself as well. Not too familiar with this aspect of wiki.

New page reviewer granted
editHi 3PPYB6. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers
" user group. Please check back at WP:PERM in case your user right is time limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page. In addition, please remember:
- Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
- You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
- If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
- Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page. Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.
The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. Arbitrarily0 (talk) 05:50, 19 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Arbitrarily0 – Oh, OK! I was expecting a simple trial run, but then again, that was at your discretion. Still, if you believe I've misused or abused this tool in any way, feel free to revoke. Thanks! — 3PPYB6 — TALK — CONTRIBS — 22:34, 19 June 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter June 2022
editHello 3PPYB6/Archives,
- Backlog status
At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.
Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]
In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).
While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).
- Backlog drive
A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here. Barnstars will be awarded.
- TIP – New school articles
Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.
- Misc
There is a new template available, {{NPP backlog}}
, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:
Very high unreviewed pages backlog: 11925 articles, as of 10:00, 10 November 2024 (UTC), according to DatBot
There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.
- Reminders
- Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
- If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing
{{subst:NPR invite}}
on their talk page. - If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
- To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

Thanks
editI would like to say thank you for the advice you gave me on the teahouse the other day regarding citing legislation. Firstly, I never would have found out the procedure for this without your advice. Secondly, I had a look through your account and realized that you have a significant amount of contributions in short period of time, and personally think you should have a shot at an Rfa, and I would be happy to co-nominate you. If you don't want to, that's fine. But, I would still like some advice about how to get more experience Wikipedia editing.(ApatheticName (talk) 17:32, 9 July 2022 (UTC))
- @ApatheticName – Thanks for the kind words! I would probably not pass RfA though, because of this incident on 2 March, as an editor who had <6 months' worth of experience, along with other flaws that the !voters just don't like. To pass RfA you have to be a shining light—no flaws, no nothing bad to pass. That aside, I would be willing to claim you as my mentee or WP:ADOPT you, should you meet their criteria. I've got to polish up before doing so, though. Also, you may have to bear with a little bit of waiting as I'm travelling right now and will be fully back on 16 July. However, thanks! — 3PPYB6 — TALK — CONTRIBS — 02:53, 10 July 2022 (UTC)

- I think your standards for "late reply" are a little out of whack. Your reply is, to my standards, quite early. Over on Uncyclopedia, time constraints force me and another user to have discussions where messages are sent once per day. Though, that is a rather extreme example... ARandomPage (talk • contribs) 08:07, 31 July 2022 (UTC)
- Oh well. We live in a world where when you send a text message you expect a reply within five minutes. On Wikipedia typically I make fast responses (usually within 30 minutes, sometimes I respond right after the message is sent), but when I'm asleep I could send your response no less than 8 hours afterwards. 🤷♂️ — 3PPYB6 — TALK — CONTRIBS — 13:10, 31 July 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022
editHello 3PPYB6/Archives,
- Backlog status
After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.
Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.
- Coordination
- MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
- Open letter to the WMF
- The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
- TIP - Reviewing by subject
- Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.
- New reviewers
- The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.
- Reminders
- Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
- If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing
{{subst:NPR invite}}
on their talk page. - If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

Administrators' newsletter – October 2022
editNews and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2022).
- Following an RfC, consensus was found that if the rationale for a block depends on information that is not available to all administrators, that information should be sent to the Arbitration Committee, a checkuser or an oversighter for action (as applicable, per ArbCom's recent updated guidance) instead of the administrator making the block.
- Following an RfC, consensus has been found that, in the context of politics and science, the reliability of FoxNews.com is unclear and that additional considerations apply to its use.
- Community comment on the revised Universal Code of Conduct enforcement guidelines is requested until 8 October.
- The Articles for creation helper script now automatically recognises administrator accounts which means your name does not need to be listed at WP:AFCP to help out. If you wish to help out at AFC, enable AFCH by navigating to Preferences → Gadgets and checking the "Yet Another AfC Helper Script" box.
- Remedy 8.1 of the Muhammad images case will be rescinded 1 November following a motion.
- A modification to the deletion RfC remedy in the Conduct in deletion-related editing case has been made to reaffirm the independence of the RfC and allow the moderators to split the RfC in two.
- The second phase of the 2021-22 Discretionary Sanctions Review closes 3 October.
- An administrator's account was recently compromised. Administrators are encouraged to check that their passwords are secure, and reminded that ArbCom reserves the right to not restore adminship in cases of poor account security. You can also use two-factor authentication (2FA) to provide an extra level of security.
- Self-nominations for the electoral commission for the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections open 2 October and close 8 October.
- You are invited to comment on candidates in the 2022 CUOS appointments process.
- An RfC is open to discuss whether to make Vector 2022 the default skin on desktop.
- Tech tip: You can do a fuzzy search of all deleted page titles at Special:Undelete.
New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022
editHello 3PPYB6/Archives,
Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.
Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.
Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.
Suggestions:
- There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
- Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
- Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
- This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.
Backlog:
Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!
- Reminders
- Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.
- If you're interested in instant messaging and chat rooms, please join us on the New Page Patrol Discord, where you can ask for help and live chat with other patrollers.
- Please add the project discussion page to your watchlist.
- If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be a reviewer, please ask any admin to remove you from the group. If you want the tools back again, just ask at PERM.
- To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.
Early end of the backlog drive
editA few days ago, new page patrollers got the backlog to zero. Due to the unprecedented success of the backlog drive, it will be ending early—at the end of 24 October, or in approximately two hours.
Barnstars will be awarded as soon as the coords can tally the results. Streak awards will be allocated based on the first three weeks of the drive, with the last three days being counted as part of week three.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

to the end of an IP in Special:Contributions to see all of a subnet's edits, and consider blocking the whole subnet rather than an IP that may change within a minute.
