Hillary Clinton

Unless you have a valid reason for disobeying Lead Citation policy please revert your vandalous removal of a "citation needed" tag on Hillary Clinton. To quote the guidline you are in direct violation of:

"The verifiability policy advises that material that is challenged or likely to be challenged, and direct quotations, should be supported by an inline citation. Any statements about living persons that are challenged or likely to be challenged must have an inline citation every time they are mentioned, including within the lead."

@MastCell:, a Wikipedia admin, has been pinged in order to encourage you to follow protocol, if you do not he will act on your vandalism as he sees fit. Chrononem  20:02, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

Jumping in here, hope you don't mind, Calidum. Chrononem, this is decidedly not vandalism. In the lead section of articles, citations are often omitted. You may disagree with the removal of the tag, but calling it vandalism is going way too far. Omnedon (talk) 20:06, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
I don't mind at all. :I undid your edit per WP:LEADCITE, which states " The necessity for citations in a lead should be determined on a case-by-case basis by editorial consensus." There is a clear consensus we don't need to cite that statement in the lead because it's cited elsewhere. Calidum T|C 20:10, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
The vandalism occured when Calidum saw that the item was beeing challenged as needing a citation, went to a page in the MOS stating that a challenged citation in the lead of a BLP article needs to have an inline citation included, and then removed the "citation needed" tag, using it to support the tag's removal. It indicates wanton disregard for policy Chrononem  20:12, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

Can you take another look? I don't see how you got "no consensus" from that. There was only one person to oppose the proposal compared to two support !votes, the proposer and a commenter whose comments are generally in favor of the merger. Also, the lone opposer's main reason was to allow time to finish writing an article he hasn't edited since January 24, 2015. While I understand that there's no deadlines around here, if finishing the article were so important as to prevent a potential merger, some more activity should have taken place in the last 6 months, even just a "I'm still working on it" type of message. Imzadi 1979  06:15, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

Sorry, but consensus isn't about counting votes and I didn't find the comments in support of the move to be particularly strong. The nomination, for example, was really a case of WP:OTHERSTUFFDOESNTEXIST. Calidum T|C 06:29, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

New England Patriots strategy

Hey; I made the original edit removing the attribution of the Patriots' no-huddle to Chip Kelly. I also undid that change stating that I would apply a new edit citing a better source. I thought I had submitted another edit with a different citation (not certain; my newborn was crying and I got distracted). Regardless, I saw you undid my undo and wanted to run this by you to make sure this would be okay.

The new citation would be "Patriots streamline play calling, speed up offense". from profootballtalk. I also intended to update the text to suggest that there was maybe some kind of influence Kelly possibly had on the Patriots' increased usage of the no-huddle offense (because even this new citation is not very explicit in stating that Chip Kelly had *any* influence; there's only mention of some "tips"). Notably, some of the claims of the original text are debunked by this new citation (specifically that "O'Brien introduced Belichick to Kelly in 2011"; Kelly knew Belichick from his days at UNH from 1999-2006). --Fauxsoup (talk) 20:05, 27 August 2015 (UTC)

British Empire

I don't see any redundancy with the phrase. I've reverted the edit because it was fine as it was before. Germany and the US eroded some of Britain's economic lead at the time but not fully eroded, so the part you deleted actually gives a better idea to what actually happened and saves the sentence from being too general instead of specific. Since Britain was still an economic leader at the time, it gives the sentence an incorrect meaning. And don't get me wrong if you are one of those staunchly patriots (whose edit was patriotic-oriented) but the truth was that Britain was still one of the big economic big-ones at the time and the sentence without the "some of" gives a deformed idea the sentence itself tries to imply. (N0n3up (talk) 03:09, 29 August 2015 (UTC))

I opened a discussion in the talk page of the article. (N0n3up (talk) 03:29, 29 August 2015 (UTC))
I didn't mean to vex you to the point that you had to take it to the notice board. But if you reffered to my actions and my summoning of other users.. I summoned Sitush and Twobells since Sitush was familiar with me in a previous discussion in the same article and Twobells just happened to be the last person to edit the talk page to get an outside opinion, not to "canvass" or use backup to my advantage as you accused of doing. And saying: And don't get me wrong if you are one of those staunchly patriots whose edit was patriotic-oriented is not a personal attack whatsoever, I was trying to give a figurative concept of someone who edits out of patriotic purpose and there is nothing of a personal attack in that, and notice the And don't get me wrong part which would make your claim of a personal attack more invalid than it already is. And also, I'm not denying that America was catching up to Britain economically, I simply stated that removing the some of part of the sentence would be too general, that's all. And to think it would all be a short talk. (N0n3up (talk) 05:39, 29 August 2015 (UTC))

Closure of forensic dentistry move

Hey Calidum, I was just wondering why you closed the discussion instead of just relisting it? I understand that there was no consensus but other RMs have been relisted more than once. It is not exactly a popular subject so it is understandable that it won't get much discussion. --Stabila711 (talk) 02:41, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

I considered it and would have relisted if there had been more participation on both sides. But I chose to close it because I concurred with the oppose comment that the nomination itself didn't contain enough information to gauge that the current title is not the primary topic. I opted to close it as "no consensus" as opposed to "not moved" because it would allow for a new, more detailed nomination in a shorter time frame. Calidum 03:00, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

Ronald Reagan

Hello,

You recently rolled back my edit clarifying the effect of Ronald Reagan's economic policies on inflation. This was misguided. Anyone with an introductory understanding of economics will agree that fiscal policy has a limited effect, if any, on inflation. Inflation is a monetary phenomenon. Accordingly, it makes no sense to say Ronald Reagan's policies lead to a decrease in inflation, which is the error I was correcting. To quote Milton Friedman "Inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon."

The finance and economics blog I cited, Calculated Risk, is well-known in economics/finance world. Please see the linked Wikipedia page below.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calculated_Risk

I would appreciate your understanding, and your allowing of my correction to stand. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Waltersjoe86 (talkcontribs) 22:55, 5 October 2015 (UTC)

You are being contacted because you contributed to a recent discussion of MOS:IDENTITY that closed with the recommendation that Wikipedia's policy on transgender individuals be revisited.

Two threads have been opened at the Village Pump:Policy. The second addresses how to instruct editors to refer to transgender people when they are mentioned in passing in other articles. Your participation is welcome. New York Mets

Just so you know, "Banner 17 LLC" by no means is a proper comparison, was that supposed to be a joke? Just the name alone tells you that it wasn't the name started at the time of formation. Furthermore, the name in no way reflects the actual team name put on the floor; the "Boston Celtics." Highlighted in the reference for the Mets mentions, "May 8, 1961 - New York's National League club announces that the team nickname will be "Mets," a natural shortening of the corporate name ("New York Metropolitan Baseball Club, Inc.")." [3] [4] [5] [6] Savvyjack23 (talk) 07:37, 25 October 2015 (UTC)

It's not a joke. The team is literally owned by Banner 17 LLC [7]. A better example may be the NFL. Should we call the New York NFC team the "New York Football Giants," the Denver club "PBD Sports," or the defending NFC champs "Football Northwest," because those are the teams' legal names? [8] Calidum 14:21, 25 October 2015 (UTC)

Please leave What A Time To Be Alive as a collaboratory MIXTAPE seeing as this is what it is. It was not released as an album and both artists have confirmed this. It would be greatly appreciated if you leave it as a mixtape, instead on constantly changing it. Thanks brother! Newsletter • October 2015

Hello there! Happy to be writing this newsletter once more. This month:

We did it!

In July, we launched five pilot WikiProjects: WikiProjects Cannabis, Evolutionary Biology, Ghana, Hampshire, and Women's Health. We also use the new design, named "WPX UI," on WikiProject Women in Technology, Women in Red, WikiProject Occupational Safety and Health. We are currently looking for projects for the next round of testing. If you are interested, please sign up on the Pilots page.

Shortly after our launch we presented at Wikimania 2015. Our slides are on Wikimedia Commons.

Then after all that work, we went through the process of figuring out whether we accomplished our goal. We reached out to participants on the redesigned WikiProjects, and we asked them to complete a survey. (If you filled out your survey—thank you!) While there are still some issues with the WikiProject tools and the new design, there appears to be general satisfaction (at least among those who responded). The results of the survey and more are documented in our grant report filed with the Wikimedia Foundation.

The work continues!

There is more work that needs to be done, so we have applied for a renewal of our grant. Comments on the proposal are welcome. We would like to improve what we have already started on the English Wikipedia and to also expand to Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. Why those? Because they are multilingual projects and because there needs to be better coordination across Wikimedia projects. More details are available in the renewal proposal.

How can the Wikimedia Foundation support WikiProjects?

The Wikimedia Developer Summit will be held in San Francisco in January 2016. The recently established Community Tech team at the Wikimedia Foundation is interested in investigating what technical support they can provide for WikiProjects, i.e., support beyond just templates and bots. I have plenty of opinions myself, but I want to hear what you think. The session is being planned on Phabricator, the Wikimedia bug tracker. If you are not familiar with Phabricator, you can log in with your Wikipedia username and password through the "Login or Register: MediaWiki" button on the login page. Your feedback can help make editing Wikipedia a better experience.

Until next time,

Charles "Buddy" Rogers

While I know consensus can change, don't you think it is worth getting the input of the people who initially !voted to change the article away from the name before closing? While I agree in closing a relisting when there appears to be consensus, I would disagree in the case that a rational reason was provided for the relist. I believe it is unwise to move a page back to a name that it was moved from under consensus without further input. True it was 2 years ago, and consensus can change. I do know that George Ho was the proposer in both cases, which carries weight but so do the others that previously voted. There is no harm in getting input from them as well... Tiggerjay (talk) 00:46, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

Sorry, I declined two out of three redirects you nominated for deletion (Indonesian Revolutionary War and Cuban Revolutionary War) since I think they serve a purpose (suggested by a search through Google Books). Sphilbrick, this is a matter we touched upon the other day and I thought it would be fair to ping you. Best, Drmies (talk) 19:21, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

No worries. Calidum T|C 19:29, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
@Drmies:

Thanks for pinging me.

Here's my thinking:

In the case of a decent article, four options occur to me:

  1. Delete the article
  2. Delete the article, but then restore it under the name of a different editor
  3. Delete the article, then rewrite from scratch
  4. Let it go

None of these options are ideal. The first deprives readers of a decent article — the better the article, the worse the loss.

The second is technically easy, deprives the banned editor of credit (which is the goal) but is a violation of copyright. I've included it mainly for completeness as I would never ever advocate doing this (but read on).

The third achieves the goal of keeping the content for our readers while depriving the editor of the recognition, but it's a very "expensive" option in terms of time. In some ways it is the ideal option but given that I'm not volunteering to do the rewrite I can't in good faith encourage it

The last option is the easiest, and one supported by many editors, with more support the better the article, but it doesn't help us with DENY.

However, when it comes to categories or redirects, the analysis may be different. The exact same four options are available, however, option two is no longer a copyright issue. "Indonesian Revolutionary War" Is too short to copyright. I'm sure we don't have a legal problem if we some other editor (presumably the one who does the deletion) simply re-create it, but we might debate whether we have an ethical problem. It would be rude if we did this to an established (and unbanned) editor, but I don't think the same applies to a banned editor. I don't see it as conceptually different than someone writing into Wikipedia and suggesting a useful redirect for category. While it is not all that common for someone to write in with a proposed redirect, people do write in with proposed edits; we enact them, and the credit goes to the person making the edit.

I also don't want to belabor this too much. I can't quite get into the head of someone who gets themselves banned and then tries to continue as an editor. What is their goal? It seems conceivable to me they'd like to be able to talk to outsiders and point to something in Wikipedia and demonstrate that they created it. I see this is plausible for articles but frankly, if someone did that with a redirect or category I'd urge them to get a life. That's another argument for adopting option 4.

I'm going on at length just in case you or Calidum think that option 2 is worth considering in this specific instance--S Philbrick(Talk) 20:13, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

  • Hmm, that's certainly an interesting thought. Tell you what, go for it, in this case--as a matter of fact, these two may not even point at the best target; they both point at a section and might as well point at the main page. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 03:25, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

Bot automation at Wikipedia:Today's articles for improvement

Greetings WikiProject TAFI members!

Over the past two weeks, there has been extensive discussion on introducing bot automation to assist with maintenance of the Today's Articles for Improvement project. A bot has now been approved for trial and will carry out the weekly duties. The bots first run will occur around 00:00, 22 November 2015 (UTC) (midnight on Sunday).

If you have been assisting any of the weekly maintenance tasks, please refrain from doing so this week. The bot needs to be tested and proven it can do the job, and it only gets one chance per week. The tasks will include:

Updating the accomplishments and archiving selections is still done manually, along with daily tasks such as adding approved entries to the articles for improvement page. These will become automated in the near future.

We hope the bot proves to serve well, and by carrying out the routine housekeeping tasks we can boost the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the project. MusikBot thanks you for your service in helping with the weekly tasks in the past, and for your cooperation during this trial period :)

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
