Bagram Airfield vs. Bagram Air Base

I have lived on BAF for the last year. I think I know what the place is named. Do you live and work here? Why is my changing the page from the incorrect "Air Base" to the correct "Airfield" an issue with you? Alexif (talk) 15:01, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

edit

Even my exams got over today (28th March) at last. I can't describe how relieved i am. How were your exams? These one month long exams and 11 papers killed me. I missed wikipedia a lot. I am completely ready for collaborating. What are you interested in? I wanna go for some article which is major and popular and has many sources (coz then its easier to work on it and can be got to GA or even FA). SO any suggestions? I am open to any suggestions. Reply awaited dude! Indianescence (talk) 09:22, 28 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I doubt i will be able to take up the glossary as my main article for editing. But i can surely help you with that. Right now i am cleaning up all my article which were badly vandalized in my absence. I was thinking that we could gor for Geyser if you don't mind because this article is very important as well as this article was once Featured and now it is in a very bad condition. You can frankly tell me what you feel. No pressure. And yes, how were your exams? Reply awaited. Indianescence (talk) 10:43, 30 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oh no no...I edited music articles just for time pass. I was not fully into wikipedia at that time (as i am quite young on wikipedia). I edited those article because my sister wanted me to (funny..i know). I like Geogo too and i myself wanted to get into them. I thought before that for editing scientific article, you need to know it perfectly. But now i know that wikipedia works plainly on sources. So now i have the confidence to edit those articles. My exams went well though they were tough too (compared to last year). I am hoping for good results now. If you don't mind, can i take up Numbers and Distribution,Misnamed Geysers and Geysers on Triton. You can go for the rest. Feel free to express what you feel. Indianescence (talk) 07:59, 31 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
I am into it. Here we go! Indianescence (talk) 08:05, 31 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oh yes, the info is kool. But do you think that the images are free? They will be awesome in the article. Indianescence (talk) 08:12, 31 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Awesome, wanted that image more than others. Its really informative. Indianescence (talk) 08:25, 31 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

[outdent]Just wanted to inform you that i have archived my talk page. Indianescence (talk) 08:54, 31 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I checked me mail. I didn't see any mail with your name. Can you be more clear? Or is it April fool? Indianescence (talk) 14:45, 1 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Can you come online on yahoo messenger. You give me your id, i will add you soon. Indianescence (talk) 15:08, 1 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Are you okay? You sound more hilarious than serious. These questions are damn odd and i don't feel its of any importance to me like you had mentioned. These questions just threat my neutrality on the internet.i would not like to answer them if you don't mind. Indianescence (talk) 15:17, 1 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
It's okay. But i would like to know, if you don't mind, why is it important for you to know? Indianescence (talk) 15:22, 1 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Movie??WHAT!! Nothing goes in my head. Tell me, are you okay, or you are still sticking to some April Fool trick? Indianescence (talk) 15:26, 1 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
It seems to me that this movie/documentary has had a deep impact on you. Feel the message but don't let it get on you. Take the movie lightly and chill out in life. There are many negatives in life, we should adjust and live with them rather than sitting and blaming them. Indianescence (talk) 15:36, 1 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

[outdent]There are many things in life which are negative and unknown dude. But when we come to know them, we should not let them upset us to an extent that it makes you feel miserable. Everything can't be perfect in life. It is good to be aware but not MAD! We should think of moving ahead in life and that you can do when you learn to adjust. A real winner in life is that person who becmoes successful in life by emerging over these negatives/problems. Don't let this get heavy on you. Live your life to the fullest and make you own little world happy. Don't let the things spoil you life. Just get over it now. You can't do anything about it. Indianescence (talk) 15:45, 1 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Please delete that message. What you are doing is called canvassing. If you are caught doing it, people can accuse you. It means that you cannot ask people for views on anything. It has to be thier view. Delete it before people discover it. Even i had done it months ago. It can be controversial. Indianescence (talk) 15:50, 1 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
It's okay. You didn't ruin anything. I think there are more important things in life. And do delete that message about that Wikporject thing before anyone discovers it. Indianescence (talk) 15:53, 1 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
No no..not those messages, the message about the wikiproject. You messages are fine. YOu are not allowed on wikipedia to ask people to express their support/oppose on anything. Indianescence (talk) 15:55, 1 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, now that fine. I was talking about WP:canvassing Indianescence (talk) 15:58, 1 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
All you need to do is to just appreciate the good things in life. Feel thankful for whatever you have. Cheers and i hope to see you back on track in life and see you on Geyser. Hehe. Indianescence (talk) 16:01, 1 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

[outdent]That's an awesome link. This is what i like about the topic Geyser. It has so much info on the net. Now it is on us to choose the best and present it nicely. We'll have to scrutinize the links and choose the text. It's way easier than working on music articles. Indianescence (talk) 09:28, 2 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oh no. Never. I did it coz i feel it looks good. Of course we will make it go through GA first. But i feel it still needs a lot of work. Geyser is a vast topic and it should be atleast 35,000 bits long for GA. For FA i think it should be 50,000. And yes, i had 2 questions. 1)Should we have to write a new section on "Geothermal Energy"? and 2)Can you suggest a better name for "Misnamed Geysers"? Indianescence (talk) 14:35, 2 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
We can't club the two sections together as the so-called geysers in the "Misnamed geysers" section are not geysers only. They can't be put under "types of Geysers" coz they are not geysers in true sense. I still doubt whether we should call it Hydrothermal energy. If you see the article Geothermal Energy, it talks about geysers majorly. Do give it a look. Indianescence (talk) 07:48, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yes, i was trying to empasise on the use of geysers by human to produce enery. That is, Geothermal energy. I was indeed talking about Commercial use. I have left a note of Talk:Geyser. Do have a look. Indianescence (talk) 08:01, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
To explain why misnamed geysers are false geysers, we have to explain how they function and that is quite a long info. Compressing it would result in omission of important info. If we club them, it would become a huge section and we will be asked by other editors (during GAC,FAC) to break it up. Indianescence (talk) 08:09, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
You don't need to ask me. I have myself suggested on the talk page the need of more sections. Go ahead. Keep up the good work. Indianescence (talk) 08:19, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
And yes, i felt that we need a map of the world showing the geyser locations in the world. Something similar to this. [1] I am not very good with images. If you could do a favour and arrange for one such world map for the Numbers and Distribution section, i would be grateful. I will try my best too. Thanks. Indianescence (talk) 08:24, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

[outdent] That was so kind. Not anything for now, but i would let you know if am in need. Thanks. If you need anything from me, feel free. You new section is really nice. Indianescence (talk) 08:39, 3 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Why will i? Its not a strict rule that we can't edit each other's sections. My work in that section will continue for a longer time. It seems major geysers and their distribution is a very vast topic. Indianescence (talk) 08:43, 4 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I see. That is why i have put that temporary map. I hope we get the new map soon. Indianescence (talk) 08:36, 6 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I think you should go ahead. I just wanted to inform you(as you are a part of geyser work), i have raised an issue on Talk:Triton (moon) about geysers. You may have alook on it. And yes, that work on images in AWESOME. TO be honest, i am highly impressed. I suck at images! Indianescence (talk) 13:30, 6 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I am feeling quite embarrased to say this, but i am not able to understand at all the discussion on Triton's talk page. Can you tell me the final desicion after it is made in simple language on my talk page. Thanks. Indianescence (talk) 13:52, 7 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yup..Downloading songs :)) Indianescence (talk) 18:12, 7 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

No,no. I don't mind. So what planned after 10th? How much do you expect in 10th? Indianescence (talk) 18:19, 7 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I seriously have no idea. I am not a topper too, but a Top 5 (only coz others don't study). I am expecting in late 80's maybe. I may enter 90's(by mistake). I am thinking of AIEEE, BITSAT and MHT-CET (Maharashtra Exam). To study for all these, i have to study for IIT (though i am not aiming for IIT). My classes start on 16th April. So i may again become semi-active on wikipedia. You seem to have quite different ambition. Technical Drawing Applications. Tiring but interesting. This year ICSE papers came quite tough. Last year they were a cakewalk. ICSE is damn unexpectable. I was is CBSE from class 1 to 4. I had to leave it. You have an advantage of knowing CBSE MAths. It will help u a lot in future. Indianescence (talk) 18:43, 7 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
After my classes start, i will hardly be there at home. I think i will end up making small contributions here and there. I can surely help you with that. I hope to get geyser at GA before the end of this month at least. Indianescence (talk) 04:25, 8 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Its ok. I wanted that section on Uses of Geysers because as far as my experience goes, we should be ready with any circumstance. If they (i.e GA reviewer) ask us for a section on that during GAC, then the article will fail. As far as medical use is concerned, i think it will suit Hot springs more than geysers (No man sits in a geyser for heat therapy or for taking up minerals!). Whenever you feel that the article is ready for GAC, go ahead and nominate. Currently i am indulged in a horrific EDIT WAR. It is getting on my nerve. I have to solve the matter there immediately. Thanks Indianescence (talk) 05:43, 9 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

[outdent] WP:Edit war. Edit war is something in which one editor makes an edit and the other keeps on undoing them thinking that they are incorrect. This editing and undoing keeps on going on. It is also accompanied sometimes by abuses. This is currently happening with genres of my articles. Why don't we toegether start the section as we have almost made our sections to a decent level. Let's start then. Indianescence (talk) 06:22, 9 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Can you suggest a name? Commercial Usage of Geysers or Uses of Geysers or something else? Indianescence (talk) 06:27, 9 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
That section on uses is awesome! I give green signal from my side. But let us review the article one more time (for spellings and sentence formation) before you nominate. I will do my review, then you can do yours. When i am done with my review, i will inform you. Indianescence (talk) 13:15, 9 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
That geyser template is mind blowing. I had done a clean up of the article, but my net went off and i couldn't save my edits. I will review the article again. Indianescence (talk) 18:11, 9 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Done I have finished my clean up. I never used "&nbsp" anywhere in my sections. So when you check the article, can you see where are they needed in my sections. Thanks a lot. As on my part, i feel the article is ready for GAC. Indianescence (talk) 18:48, 9 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

No no. I don't mind. Now lets wait and watch. Fingers crossed. and yes, i hope there is no objection on the map!! Indianescence (talk) 08:00, 10 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
The article has undergone a GA review. Its on hold. Do have a look. I have tried my best to address the issues raised. Lets see what happens. Indianescence (talk) 05:40, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
It's ok. It must be paining badly. You take care of yourself. This GA nomination seems to be very confusing. I never knew dashes and spaces mattered so much! Lets wait and watch. Indianescence (talk) 15:20, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Just a very informal note. This VanTucky seems to be a very strict guy. Look on his user page. He has failed many GA articles. I hope he doesn't read this. hehe. Indianescence (talk) 15:26, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
At least he liked the prose. But i would really feel bad if the article fails because of dashes and spaces. Honestly, it sounds very kiddish to me. It seems i am in a very frank mood. I am blurting out everything i feel in the corner of my heart. ;)Indianescence (talk) 15:32, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
I feel he is sensible enough to put logic above anger. I have given a slight hint about it in my new comment on the talk page. I think you would like to answer that survey on the talk page. Dank seems to be enthusiastic about the replies. Indianescence (talk) 15:39, 13 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

You are absolutely correct that volcanoes make geysers work. What i was asking was, How? I know there already are some lines about it, but i don't know why, i am getting a feeling that there is something more about the sychronization in the working of Volcano and Geyser together. If there is nothing much about it, then i seriously don't mind its absence in the article as a section. I just gave it thaught. Indianescence (talk) 16:50, 17 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
For Tourism in New Zealand (Rotorua) see [2]. Rotorua is most famous for geyser tourism in New Zealand.
For Geyser Tourism in Iceland see [3]
And for Geyser Tourism in Yellowstone, see [4] You can pick many statistical data from these sites too. For searching, i typed, "geyser place name tourism" in google search. Cheers! Indianescence (talk) 15:16, 18 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ok, so thats the case. But i feel that the Iceland source is not a Tour Company site. Its a guide for tourists in Iceland. I think guides will be allowed as they don't advertise tour packages. Indianescence (talk) 07:22, 19 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
WP:Verifiability states, that readers should be able to check that material added to Wikipedia has already been published by a reliable source. I feel that the iceland source is reliable as it is not a blog site. Its a travel guide, not an advertisement! Indianescence (talk) 16:46, 19 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

[outdent] Hey Sushant. I hope you are doing well. Well, recently i worked on Running (No Doubt song), and got it to GA, and then now on "Rock Steady to Featured Topic Candidate". I was quite occupied at it. I hope Rock Steady becomes Featured topic soon. Well, i have a kinda bad news. My classes start from 25th April, and my dad is getting my T.V and Net cut. As a result, unfortunately and sadly, i wont be able to work on wikipedia till August 2010. I felt bad, but i know its for my own good. I might be able to come on wikipedia very rarely, maybe i will come to just talk to you. It was extremely great and fun working with you on Geyser. I will be leaving wikipedia on 28th April. I hope you enjoy your time here, Himachal Pradesh needs you. hehe. Take care. Bye. Indianescence (talk) 10:59, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Even i am waiting for Rock Steady to become Featured Topic [5]. It was User:17Drew's dream. I am waiting for it to pass. Drew could not make Running (No Doubt song) a GA, so his dream was left unfulfilled. i did that and i hope his dream comes true, though he is not on wikipedia since December. Indianescence (talk) 17:54, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Actually Drew was the guy whom i met first on wikipedia. I made very silly edits initially. Anyone else would have kicked me out. But he kept on telling me the right way to edit and encouraged me. Everyone knows how good he was in editing and how high-class he was, yet he spoke to me. He helped me a lot, so it was my time to return it. Thats what i did. I hope one day he returns and sees my gift for him. Indianescence (talk) 18:01, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Himachal Pradesh

Hi Sushant, how are you? I made some edits (mostly structural edits) in Himachal Pradesh, more will follow. I went though the FAC of the article, and also read large parts of the article. Several MoS issues need to be solved. Hope those could be fixed easily. After I do some more edits (may need a few days), how about a peer review?--Dwaipayan (talk) 17:28, 31 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I know about the article Economic development in India. You did tell about it when it was being developed.
Anyway. let's see how the HP article goes. Probably the "culture" section would need additional content.--Dwaipayan (talk) 03:21, 1 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the barnstar. As for Weber-Stephen Products Co., I knew it was a long shot to pass WP:GA, but I figured I'd give it a shot anyway, and at least get some constructive feedback on the article on ways to improve. Re: Arad, Israel GA

edit

Hi, thanks for your comments. Initially I thought that you were just out to auto-fail the article for trivial reasons, but now I see that you're a genuine reviwer. I am working on improving the article in accordance with your comments. However, I have a few concerns:

  • The images in the history section - it's a browser issue, I guess related to web standards compliance. It works just fine on IE. I'll try to fix it somehow, maybe with a gallery, but moving the images to the left is not a good solution.
  • About images - this is actually something that really bothers me in many other articles, especially GAs and FAs - not enough images. Redirecting the reader to a commons category doesn't help anyone, and I'm saying this from vast experience as both an editor and reader on Wikipedia. As long as there's no policy or guideline prohibiting the use of images as they are used/placed in the article on Arad, I don't think anything should be changed.

You'll also be glad to know that I fixed most of the other issues you raised (the small ones).

Cheers, Ynhockey (Talk) 17:03, 10 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Just to elaborate on the reason why I thought your initial review was unfair off-hand: notice that the article's subject is a very small town in the middle of nowhere, which isn't really that notable - I think in India for example, which has a billion people, it would probably not be considered notable enough to even mention. Even so, the article is very long (over 40 kB), includes a wealth of sourced information which most GAs even on big cities do not include (see Ashdod for example), images from all over town, including a couple original ones from the 1990s (!!!), as well as three original maps, including a full street map (I haven't really seen another article on all of Wikipedia which has this, including FAs). In light of all these merits, the only real issues you found were some citation needed tags and a short lead. It's kind of hard for me to understand how that's fair, although as I said in my previous comment, I am working to improve the article as we speak. -- Ynhockey (Talk) 17:19, 10 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Very well, I'll try to do something with the images. It's very difficult for me to know about formatting issues on other systems, and a screenshot would really help. On my 17" monitor, the formatting looks perfect and very in-place. -- Ynhockey (Talk) 17:20, 10 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for withdrawing the complaint, although I'd still like a screenshot, if possible, of what it looks like on your system. In that case, I'll make an effort to format the images better for wide-screen monitors. I admit that thinking about it now, some sections' formatting must looks horrible on wide-screen, because the heights were very specifically chosen on many images. -- Ynhockey (Talk) 17:41, 10 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have already addressed the citation needed issue. Please see Talk:Arad, Israel and the article itself. Good night! -- Ynhockey (Talk) 18:54, 10 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the pass of this article. Flymeoutofhere (talk) 19:38, 10 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
BTW - I just thought - would you consider doing a GA review of Haifa for me. Its had 2 failed GAC's - the comments from the second one were almost fully addressed, but I had no reply from the reviewer despite asking him whether its ok. Itd be great if you could do that. Thanks. Flymeoutofhere (talk) 19:51, 10 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ummm... First off, the lead for a short article shouldn't be very long. Second, band's that are reletavly underground don't really require images. Did you read the article?!? "The band started touring and gained a position on the second stage of Ozzfest, but were kicked off the tour because the stage was sponsored by Jägermeister, due to the fact some of the band members were under the legal drinking age. Although the band were no longer appearing on the second stage, Black Tide was able to be the opening act on the main stage in some areas, opening for Lordi, Static-X, Lamb of God, and Ozzy Osbourne.[2] After Ozzfest, the band toured with Avenged Sevenfold and All That Remains.[3][4]" Burningclean [speak] 03:26, 11 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

GA reviews

edit

Hi! I've noticed that you've been doing some GA reviews. When reviewing articles, please make sure that everything you put onto the talk page regarding the GA review is placed within one section header only, and that you link to it from the {{ArticleHistory}} template. I've noticed that several of your reviews have the review itself under one section header, and the pass/fail under a separate one, which is not correct -- it's not a good idea to separate this. Thanks! Dr. Cash (talk) 05:52, 14 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Excuse me? When you called me "reviewing a portal for the first time", that's personal attack. My review experience is 10 times more than you, to be honest. I'm a featured portal co-director (see Wikipedia:Featured portal candidates/Co-directors) and I am one of the most experienced reviewer in the community that they trusted me to be a GA Sweeps participant (see Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/Project quality task force/Sweeps). For your question on why I raise concerns in installments, the reason is because I was on exam last week (don't get me started, I got 4 exams in 5 days). I won't have time to use an hour to review every aspect of the portal. Plus I even helped you to clean up some stuff in the portal while I was in my exam week. Thanks for the reply. To answer your question: if a user has received sufficient warnings and a final warning, and if you're intention is to protect the encyclopedia (and/or certain users), then it is certainly not a bad practice to request a block. Be it via WP:AIV or a specific admin. But I just wanted to say that WP:AIV is the prefered way. Keep vandal-hunting because you're help is appreciated! Cheers, Face 20:09, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Evolutionary history of life

edit

Hi, Sushant. I'm impressed that you started Evolutionary history of life as a 16-year-old - at that age I woudn't have known where to begin - and I've been keen on the subject since I was about 11. I have every intention of improving it as much as possible. The old version (e.g at end-July 2008) was far too focussed on molecular biology, and virtually ignored other perspectives (especially geology & paleontology) and important stages in the story (e.g microbial mats, which owned the biosphere for over 2000 M years and arguably still do). A buddy and I are the active members of WP:CEX, and hopefully have wide enough background knowledge to provide reasonable coverage. We'll go for GA when we think the article covers the subject decently - huge gaps in coverage were why it was demoted from GA to C-class. If you think we're in danger of missing something, please either mention it at Talk:Evolutionary history of life or add it, with WP:RS of course. -- Philcha (talk) 13:27, 1 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I'll do the lead when I'm happy with the main content. I'll probably have to revise the content a few times, as it's such a huge topic - right now I'm trying to find the best way to summarise multicellularity, which is very complex on its own. -- Philcha (talk) 10:37, 3 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, Sushant, I'll have to undo your grouping of the diversification of eucaryotes section with three domain system. I know where I'm going with the article. The problem is that it's such a huge topic that there's little room for background material. You should regard anythng below the sections I've produced as obsolete, retained only so I can cannibalise them. I'm sorry if that sound harsh, but I've had to be equally harsh with my own writing - User:Philcha/Sandbox/LUCA contains big section I wrote then removed becuase it's too big and does not stick closely to the main subject - "evolutionary history" = history (narrative, mainly the big events) from an evolutionary point of view.
The whole thing is so complex that for now it's best if it's controlled by one person. The "GA" version was poorly structured and looked like a horse designed by a committee - a camel (old UK joke, I don't know if it's well-known among Indians).
On the other hand if you want to comment at Talk:Evolutionary history of life, I'd be happy know your opinions and ideas. -- Philcha (talk) 12:23, 3 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
To give you an example of how much the article needs to be compressed, compare the recent section "Earliest evidence for life on Earth" with the older section "Early signs of life". The newer section is more accurate and up-to-date as well, as it's written by 2 people who have done quite a lot of work on Cambrian and pre-Cambrian paleontology subjects (see (WP:CEX) -- Philcha (talk) 12:33, 3 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hi, Sushant, I just looked at the last version of the article before I started editing and found no section called "Geology". There was a section "Major geological extinction events", which started with a huge mistake - its first subsection was "Cambrian explosion", which was certainly not an extinction.
Re geology generally, rhere's now a timeline at the top which I will complete by adding important events, and I'll probably add at least one more to cover in more detail events from the Ediacaran to the present. -- Philcha (talk) 15:32, 5 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

File Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Photo 77.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

Orphaned non-free media (File:Vlcsnap-5984376.png)

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Vlcsnap-5984376.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:18, 31 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

GA Sweeps invitation

edit

Hello, I hope you are doing well. I am sending you this message since you are a member of the GA WikiProject. I would like to invite you to consider helping with the GA sweeps process. Sweeps helps to ensure that the oldest GAs still meet the criteria, and improve the quality of GAs overall. Unfortunately, last month only two articles were reviewed. This is definitely a low point after our peak at the beginning of the process when 163 articles were reviewed in September 2007. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. All exempt and previously reviewed articles have already been removed from the list. Instead of reviewing by topic, you can consider picking and choosing whichever articles interest you.

We are always looking for new members to assist with the remaining articles, so if you are interested or know of anybody that can assist, please visit the GA sweeps page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. If only 14 editors achieve this feat starting now, we would be done with Sweeps! Of course, having more people reviewing less articles would be better for all involved, so please consider asking others to help out. Feel free to stop by and only review a few articles, something's better than nothing! Take a look at the list, and see what articles interest you. Let's work to complete Sweeps so that efforts can be fully focused on the backlog at GAN. If you have any questions about the process, reviewing, or need help with a particular article, please contact me or OhanaUnited and we'll be happy to help. --Happy editing! Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

WikiProject India Newsletter Volume V, Issue no. 1 - (June 2010)

edit
Project News

WP:IND Newsletter is back! It's been nearly a year since the last edition, but we hope to bring out issues on a more regular basis now. The India Wikiproject was set up to increasing coverage of India-related topics on Wikipedia, and over the past few months the focus has been on improving article quality. A number of the project's featured articles underwent featured article reviews over the past year. Of these, Darjeeling and Flag of India survived the review process, while the rest were demoted. During the same period, Gangtok, Harbhajan Singh, Darjeeling and Mysore were featured on the main page respectively on August 20, September 17, November 6 and December 29, 2009. Meanwhile, articles on topics as diverse as Political history of Mysore and Coorg (1565–1760), Marwari horse and Iravan were promoted as featured articles, and respectively appeared on the main page on March 25, May 17 and May 28, 2010. Consequently, the number of FA-class articles under the project's scope dropped from 67 in August 2009 to 63 in June 2010. The number of good articles, however, saw a more than 40% increase, from 91 to 130 during the same period, while the number of featured lists saw a 33% increase from 12 to 16.

Due to the recent policy changes regarding unreferenced Biographies of Living People (BLPs), an effort was started in January 2010 to source all unreferenced BLPs coming under Wikiproject India. 1200 such articles were identified initially and more were added to the list later. Due to the sourcing effort, the number of Indian unreferenced BLPs is down to 565 currently. During February-April 2010, There was a large scale disruption of Kerala related articles by a Thrissur based IP vandal. Editing from a dynamic IP BSNL connection, the vandal changed dates of birth, death and ages of a number of Malayalam and Tamil film actors. Later he added a few international biographies to his list. He also marked some living people like Arvind Swamy as dead. A month long range block was imposed on his IP range two times and each time he came back to vandalise dates once the block expired. Currently the range has been blocked for three months till September 11, 2010.

WikiProject India Newsletter Volume V, Issue no. 2 - November 2010

edit
English WikiProject News

After a missed issue, the WP:IND newsletter is back on track to being a regular bimonthly feature. The Indian WikiProject has seen plenty of online and off-line action, both in English as well as other Indian languages, and we now have a bigger, better format that intends to feature content and news from the English as well as other Indian language Wikipedias.

Reaching out to Indians has been the theme of the Indian Wikiproject over the past couple of months, aiming to involve a greater number of Indians in editing both the English and Indian language Wikipedias. To this end, efforts to set up the Indian chapter of Wikimedia have moved into their final stages, and registration of the society is currently pending. An effort is underway to push for "WikiMarathons" at meetups, where attendees will be encouraged to edit the English and/or Indian language Wikipedias. This is intended to popularise Wikipedia editing among the general public. In addition, a bot to post DYK's from the Indian Wikiproject to Twitter was created and launched by User:Logicwiki.

What's New?

Regrettably, the number of Featured Articles has dropped from 63 in June to 58 at the end of October 2010. Several FAs came up for review and were delisted, while Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles and Fundamental Duties of India was saved. Meanwhile, Chalukya Dynasty appeared on the main page on July 9, 2010. Hearteningly, the number of Good Articles increased from 130 to 136 during the same period, while the number of Featured Lists remained constant at 16.

The source code for the Article Alert Bot is now available and the bot itself is expected to be up and running very shortly. This means that article alerts for the Indian Wikiproject will again be available, enabling editors to easily keep track of developments in respect of reviews, nominations, deletions etc.

The date change vandal mentioned briefly in the previous issue made a reappearance when the range block on his IP range expired in September. Consequently the block was extended till September 2011.

In October there was a heated discussion in the India project noticeboard regarding the copyright status of the Indian party symbols. The discussion was triggered by the deletion of Wiki San Roze's party symbol images by Hammersoft as copyright violations. No resolution was reached, partly because of our inability to explain to Hammersoft how election symbols in India differ from party logos. Comments are requested from anyone with a background in Indian copyright law to clarify this issue.

WikiProject Space reorganization

edit

Hello WikiProject Space member! A discussion has been started regarding the future of WikiProject Space here; any comments you might have would be welcome! There are mainly two competing ideas:

  1. Centralize all the Space-related WikiProjects, such as Astronomy and Spaceflight, and merge them into WikiProject Space, or
  2. Separate the Astronomy and Spaceflight "sides" of WikiProject, and remove WikiProject Space.

If you can think of other options, that's great too. Your contribution to the discussion would be much appreciated. Thanks! :)

WikiProject India Tag & Assess 2012 Contest

edit

Hello friends, we are a number of editors from WikiProject India have got together to assess the many thousands of articles under the stewardship of the project, and we'd love to have you, a fellow member, join us. These articles require assessment, that is, the addition of a WikiProject template to the talk page of an article, assessing it for quality and importance and adding a few extra parameters to it.

As of March 11, 2012, 07:00 UTC, WikiProject India has 95,998 articles under its stewardship. Of these 13,980 articles are completely unassessed (both for class and importance) and another 42,415 articles are unassessed for importance only. Accordingly, a Tag & Assess 2012 drive-cum-contest has begun from March 01, 2012 to last till May 31, 2012.

If you are new to assessment, you can learn the minimum about how to evaluate from Part One of the Assessment Guide. Part Two of the Guide will help you learn to employ the full functionality of the talk page template, should you choose to do so.

You can sign up on the Tag & Assess page. There are a number of awards to be given in recognition of your efforts. Come & join us to take part in this exciting new venture. You'll learn more about India in this way.

File permission problem with File:Himachali in traditional dress.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Himachali in traditional dress.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Magog the Ogre (talk) 20:38, 23 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject Good articles (Participant Clean-Up)

edit

Hello, you are receiving this message because you are currently a participant of WikiProject Good articles. Since the creation of the WikiProject, over 200 user's have joined to help review good article nominations and contribute to other sections of the WikiProject. Over the years, several of these users have stopped reviewing articles and/or have become inactive with the project but are still listed as participates. In order to improve communications with other participants and get newsletters sent out faster (newsletters will begin to be sent out monthly starting in October) all participants that are no longer active with the WikiProject will be removed from the participants list.

If you are still interested in being a participant for this WikiProject, please sign your user name here and please help review some articles so we can reduce the size of the backlog. If you are no longer interested, you do not need to sign your name anywhere and your name will be removed from the participants list after the deadline. Remember that even if you are not interested at this time, you can always re-add your name to the list whenever you want. The deadline to sign your name on the page above will be November 1, 2012. WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre

edit

Hello! Now, some of you might be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers:
  • Recruiters: The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet this criteria. If we don't get at least 5-10 recruiters to start off with, the Recruitment Centre will not open. If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read the process and add your name to the list of recruiters. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the process section is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available".
  • Co-Director: The current Director for the centre is me (Dom497). Another user that would be willing to help with some of the tasks would be helpful. Tasks include making sure recruiters are doing what they should be (teaching!), making sure all recruitments are archived correctly, updating pages as needed, answering any questions, and distributing the feedback form. If interested, please contact me (Dom497).
  • Nominators, please read this: If you are not interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still help. In some cases a nominator may have an issue with an "inexperienced" editor (the recruitee) reviewing one of their nominations. To minimize the chances of this happening, if you are fine with a recruitee reviewing one of your nominations under the supervision of the recruiter, please add your name to the list at the bottom of this page. By adding your name to this list, chances are that your nomination will be reviewed more quickly as the recruitee will be asked to choose a nomination from the list of nominators that are OK with them reviewing the article.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing this program bring new reviewers to the Good article community and all the positive things it will bring along.

A message will be sent out to all recruiters regarding the date when the Recruitment Centre will open when it is determined. The message will also contain some further details to clarify things that may be a bit confusing.--Dom497 (talk)

GAN December 2013 Backlog Drive

edit

Hello! A GAN Backlog Drive will begin in less than 4 days!

In past Backlog Drives, the goal was to reduce the backlog of Good article nominations. In the upcoming drive, another goal will be added - raising as much money as we can for the Wikimedia Foundation. How will this work? Well, its pretty simple. Any user interested in donating can submit a pledge at the Backlog Drive page (linked above). The pledge should mention the amount of money the user is willing to donate per review. For example, if a user pledges 5 cents per review and 100 nominations are reviewed, the total donation amount is $5.00.

At the time this message was sent out, two users have submitted pledges for a total of 8 cents per review. All pledges, no matter how much money, are greatly appreciated. Also, in no way is this saying you must make a pledge.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or leave a message on the Backlog Drive talk page. And remember, there are less than 4 days before the drive starts!--EdwardsBot (talk) 03:14, 27 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

March 2014 GAN Backlog Drive

edit

It's that time again! Starting on March 1, there will be another GAN Backlog Drive! There will be several changes compared to previous drives:

  • This drive will introduce a new component to it; a point system. In a nutshell, older nominations are worth more points than newer nominations. The top 3 participants who have the points will be awarded the Golden, Silver, or Bronze Wikipedia Puzzle Piece Trophy, respectively.
  • Unlike the December 2013 Backlog Drive, earning an additional barnstar if you reached your goal has been removed.
  • The allowance to have insufficient reviews has been lowered to 2 before being disqualified.
  • An exception to the rule that all reviews must be completed before the deadline has been created.

Also, something that I thought I would share with all of you is that we raised $20.88 (USD) for the WMF in the December 2013 drive. It may not sound like a lot but considering that that was raised just because we reviewed articles, I would say that's pretty good! With that success, pledges can be made for the upcoming drive if you wish.

More info regarding the drive and full descriptions regarding the changes to this drive can be found on the the drive page. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a message on the drive talk page.

I look forward to your participation and hope that because of it, some day the backlog will be gone!

WikiProject Good articles Future GAN Backlog Drive

edit

Hello everyone! Hope you've all been having a great summer!

TheQ Editor recently proposed the idea of having another Backlog Drive in either September/October or November/December of this year. For those of you who have participated in the past two drives you know I was the one who organized them, however, come September, this will be my most important year in school so I will not be able to coordinate this drive (if it happens). TheQ Editor has volunteered to be a coordinator for the drive. If any of you would like to co-coordinator, please notify TheQ Editor on his talk page.

If you would be interested in participating in a Backlog Drive sometime before the end of this year, please notify TheQ Editor. Also, make sure to specify what month(s) work best for you.

At the time this message was sent out, the backlog was at 520 nominations. Since May, the backlog has been steadily increasing and we are currently near an all time high. Even though the backlog will not disappear over one drive, this drive can lead to several others which will (hopefully) lead to the day where there is no longer a backlog.

As always, the more participants, the better, and everyone is encouraged to participate!

GA Cup

edit

Hello everyone! We hope you have all been having a great summer!

As we all know, the recent GAN Backlog Drives have not had any big impact on the backlog. Because of that, me (Dom497), Figureskatingfan, and TheQ Editor have worked on an idea that could possibly finally put a dent into the massive backlog. Now, I will admit, the idea isn't entirely ours as we have took the general idea of the WikiCup and brought it over to WikiProject Good Articles. But anyways, here's what we have in mind:

For all of you that do not know what the WikiCup is, it is an annual competition between several editors to see who can get the most Good Articles, Featured Article's, Did You Know's, etc. Based of this, we propose to you the GA Cup. This competition will only focus on reviewing Good articles.

For more info on the proposal, click here. As a FYI, the proposal page is not what the final product will look like (if you do go ahead with this idea). It will look very similar to WikiCup's page(s).

The discussion for the proposal will take place here. Please let us know if you are interested, have any concerns, things to consider, etc.

WikiProject Good Articles - GA Cup

edit

WikiProject Good articles is holding a new competition, the GA Cup, from October 1, 2014 - March 28, 2015. The Cup will be based on reviewing Good article nominations; for each review, points will be awarded with bonuses for older nominations, longer articles and comprehensive reviews. All participants will start off in one group and the highest scoring participants will go through to the second round. At the moment six rounds are planned, but this may change based on participant numbers.

Some of you may ask: what is the purpose for a competition of this type? Currently, there is a backlog of about 500 unreviewed Good article nominations, almost an all time high. It is our hope that we can decrease the backlog in a fun way, through friendly competition.

Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors! Sign-ups will be open until October 15, 2014 so sign-up now!

If you have any questions, take a look at the FAQ page and/or contact one of the four judges.

Cheers from NickGibson3900, Dom497, TheQ Editor and Figureskatingfan.

ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Possible removal of AWB access due to inactivity

edit

Hello! There is currently a request for approval of a bot to manage the AutoWikiBrowser CheckPage by removing inactive users, among other tasks. You are being contacted because you may qualify as an inactive user of AWB. First, if you have any input on the proposed bot task, please feel free to comment at the BRFA. Should the bot task be approved, your access to AWB may be uncontroversially removed if you do not resume editing within a week's time. This is purely for routine maintenance of the CheckPage, and is not indicative of wrongdoing on your part. You will be able regain access at any time by simply requesting it at WP:PERM/AWB. Thank you! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 23:36, 8 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
