You are invited to join the Brooklyn based Sure We Can community for our 2nd NYC COVID-19 themed Wikipedia Edit-a-thon / translate-a-thon - ONLINE - this Saturday, Nov 21st, 2020 11am - 1pm. The edit-a-thon is part of Sure We Can's work with NYC Health + Hospitals to stop the spread of Covid-19. We plan to continue to work on translating the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City article into the many languages spoken in New York City; as well as, work on other ideas about how wikipedia could slow the spread of Covid-19. We’ve compiled, with the help of translators, translations of the first four paragraphs of the COVID-19 in NYC article into Swahilli, Malagasy, Yoruba, Hebrew, Hindi, and Tagalog. September Drive: Our current backlog-elimination drive is open until 23:59 on 30 September (UTC) and is open to all copy editors. Sign up today! Election reminder: our end-of-year Election of Coordinators opens for nominations on 1 December. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here. Drive and Blitz reports
June Blitz: An uncorrected typo (even copy editors make copy editing mistakes!) led to an eight-day "leap blitz" from 14 to 21 June, focusing on requests and articles tagged in May. 19 participating editors claimed 54 copy edits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. July Drive: Over 750,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event, keeping pace with the previous three self-isolated drives. Of the 38 people who signed up, 30 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here. August Blitz: From 16 to 22 August, we copy edited articles tagged in June and July 2020 and requests. 12 participating editors completed 37 copy edits on the blitz. June election: Jonesey95 was chosen to continue as lead coordinator, assisted by Baffle gab1978, Tdslk, Twofingered Typist, and first-time coordinator Puddleglum2.0. Reidgreg took a break after serving for a couple years. Thanks to everyone who participated! Progress report: As of 01:33, 18 September 2020 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors had processed 532 requests since 1 January and there were 38 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog of articles tagged for copy-editing stood at 433 (see monthly progress graph above). Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you!  Wikipedia Day is always a big day for Wikimedia NYC. While we cannot meet in person, we still have something special planned. We will begin the event with the debut of a new video celebrating our community. This will be followed by a panel discussion with some of the people you'll see in the video talking about Wikipedia's 20th anniversary, Wikimedia New York City, and the amazing work they do on Wikimedia projects. The event will be broadcast live via YouTube. Feel free to ask questions for the panel through the chat! We will also have some NYC wiki trivia you can participate in, with confectionery prizes.

Election time: our end-of-year Election of Coordinators opened for nominations on 1 December and will close on 15 December at 23:59 (UTC). Voting opens at 00:01 the following day and will continue until 31 December at 23:59, just before Auld Lang Syne. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here. December Blitz: This will run from 13 to 19 December, and will target all Requests. Sign up now. Drive and Blitz reports
September Drive: 67 fewer articles had copy-edit templates by this month's close. Of the 27 editors who signed up, 15 copy-edited at least one article, and 124 articles were claimed for the drive. October Blitz: this ran from 18 to 24 October, and focused on articles tagged for copy-edit in July and August 2020, and all Requests. Of the 13 who signed up, 11 editors copy-edited at least one article. 21 articles were claimed for the blitz. November Drive: Of the 18 editors who signed up, 15 copy-edited at least one article, and together claimed 134 articles. At the close of the drive, 67 fewer articles were in the backlog and we had dealt with 39 requests. Other news
Progress report: As of 09:05, 3 December 2020 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors had processed 663 requests (18 from 2019) since 1 January and there were 52 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog of articles tagged for copy-editing stood at 494 (see monthly progress graph above). Annual Report for 2020: this roundup of the year's activity at the Guild is planned for publication in late January or early February. Election time: Voting in our mid-year Election of Coordinators opened on 16 June and will conclude at the end of the month. GOCE coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Have your say and show support here. June Blitz: Our June copy-editing blitz is underway and will conclude on 26 June. Drive and blitz reports
January Drive: 28 editors completed 324 copy edits totalling 714,902 words. At the end of the drive, the backlog had reached a record low of 52 articles. (full results) February Blitz: 15 editors completed 48 copy edits totalling 142,788 words. (full results) March Drive: 29 editors completed 215 copy edits totalling 407,736 words. Progress report: as of 26 June, GOCE participants had completed 343 Requests since 1 January. Hi. I'm just curious, why is the category Category:Top-importance Batman articles shown as empty? Does anyone know why? the article Batman at least should clearly be showing up there. right?

- Please don't use the {{help me}} template in two places to ask the same question. You've identified the correct template to investigate at Talk:Batman#question re Category:Top-importance Batman articles. Comics articles importance ratings
Hi, I reverted your changes to some Batman-related articles. You placed them all in "Top" importance, which may be their importance within the Batman universe (though even their some are debatable), but which is not their actual importance for the Comics project in general (which is what your edits actually achieved). Articles like Alfred Pennyworth or Batman's utility belt are very far removed from being Top importance for the Comics project. The intention is to keep "Top" for about 50 articles only: at the moment, there are 56 ones listed at Category:Top-importance Comics articles, of which only a handful can really be debated (I'll reassess Hobbes (Calvin and Hobbes) and take a look at some others). Batman is correctly one of them, but subtopics of the Batman universe should not be in this category. Fram (talk) 15:29, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

I've never paid any attention to user pages; I suppose it is useful not only for learning more about a particular editor but also in judging their competence and credibility. I honestly don't remember when I started editing Wikipedia, although a year ago sounds right. As for my date of birth, it is October 26, 1952, and I live in Mexico (although I'm a U.S. citizen, which largely explains my interest in U.S. history and politics). Over the past few days, I have made several suggestions on how you could proceed. Once again, I think it would be useful if you created a new talk page (possibly in your own user space) where you could list what you think are the project's current shortcomings and how you think these could be overcome. - OK. Thanks for the explanation. I started to reply to it but then found it was no longer there and went back to history to find it again. Anyway, I'm glad to see you are going to follow up on my suggestion. I still think one of the important areas to work on is assessment. As you have probably noticed, there are already several types of assessment report including by changes (recently updated here but not yet incorporated), by page watchers, by Category:Defunct WikiProjects, Inactive WikiProjects and Semi-active WikiProjects and, interestingly, those featured on Signpost. What is not measured is the number of article talk pages tagged by WikiProject over time (e.g. over the past month or by year). This could be a useful way of finding out which WikiProjects are considered interesting by those creating new articles but I don't know if it would be easy to implement. Once you have developed your new talk page, I would be happy to contribute.--Ipigott (talk) 08:11, 21 January 2020 (UTC)

- Oh, for something like that, you'd probably use {{collapse}}. {{collapse top}} or, where you want to indicate that a discussion is over and done with, {{Hidden archive top}}. Just avoid doing that in article space.

What are the standards for inclusion in year links?

- @Doug Weller: thanks for your note. well, as far as notability in year articles, I think, the standards for that are no different than the standards for WP:Notability in general. If you want my own feelings on that, the simplest answer is that I am absolutely an inclusionist. absolutely. that is why I like working on current year articles. if a fact is out there, let's grab it!!! snag that puppy before it goes by!!! put it in a timeline article, where the fact collerctors at Wikipedia can add it to their collection, put it under glass, and enjoy it for years to come!! <ahem> lol!!
. well, that's my own personal outlook on this. so who are some of these poets who have red links? were they published? were they notable? was their work published, either in books, or else perhaps in major publications? Please feel free to let me know. if so, let's get them in!! I'd be happy to work with you on this. let me know.
- by the way, it is a pleasure to hear from you on this. I am currently in the midst of a major reworking and revamping of Wikipedia:WikiProject History. but after that, I hope to move on slowly to revamping other WikiProjects over the course of time. - I agree with the concept of inclusion, particularly in years projects. I would even go a step further, and I would like to see a revision of the policy regarding "notable deaths" because it tends to exclude non-Anglos and runs contrary to the priority of "diversity." Most contributors to English-Wikipedia are either North Americans or British, so articles about events or people tend to come from these areas. When writing about people or things that happened twenty or more years ago, it is probably best to simply add the information without creating red links. I appreciate your great points above. as far as notability for earthquakes, they fall in the category of natural events, not manamde disasters. therefore, as such the standard of notability depends on the intensity or magnitude of such an event, not any measure of the impact of humans or society. on that basis, that earthquake is definitely notable, and is definitely suitable for inclusion.
