Question about page deletion

You deleted my page 'Molly Bennett' and I do not understand why? It was none of your concern. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SexWithStyles (talkcontribs) 23:05, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Read the explanation I put on your talk page. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a gossip site, so it is is selective about subjects for articles. Being "an aspiring website designer" and being "in a committed relationship" with an actor are not enough to meet the Wikipedia:Notability requirement. JohnCD (talk) 10:01, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

Sasuke stages

Everything looks to be in order, although I don't usually look over the page. I do have an interest in the show, but the community involved with the show usually uses our own Wikia website due to the constant vandalism, it's just that someone was looking to also update the article for those not aware of our site (which we usually don't talk about to prevent vandals and spammers from coming over, since we have our own). I thank you for looking out, though. Rollinman (talk) 23:20, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Image on Reform and criticism section on United Nations

File:Tractors. Jan 2009 displacement in the Vanni.jpg "Civilians are being displaced in Northern Sri Lanka during the final months of the war. A review of UN action criticized the UN leadership, UN Security Council and top UN officials in Sri Lanka."

I have re-added the above image which is removed by User:Rich Farmbrough without edit summary on the Reform and criticism section on United Nations; since the image depicts one of the worst human tragedies human kind ever faced and reviewed by the UN itself its fault and found guilty.Sudar123 (talk) 02:17, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

This is a content dispute, where admins have no special authority. Read WP:BRD - you should discuss this on the article talk page and try to reach a WP:Consensus; failing that, use WP:Dispute resolution. JohnCD (talk) 10:05, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

Artpop mess

Hey John!

I need your help. User:193ra continues to create innapropriate articles, on the upcoming Lady Gaga album "Artpop" - despite consensus against it. S/he has been moving certain Article incubator project pages on the album to mainspace Artpop articles - I have reverted them - s/he has tried a different way - I have tried reverting that too, however now I have become totally confused in this loophole of moving. I'm dead set confused. Please take a look at their edits. If I revert further, I'll only be making the mess bigger than it is! Thank you, -- MSTR (Happy New Year!) 11:07, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

I can't get to this for four or five hours. I'll look at it then, if no-one else has. JohnCD (talk) 11:13, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
Okay, sorry if you find it confusing (doubt it, not everyone is like me -.-!) oh I need a holiday from WP... -- MSTR (Happy New Year!) 11:16, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
Problem has been solved. JamesBWatson came to the rescue. Whilst some of us go worrying around like a headless chicken, you lot are very calm - a real gem to the project! Thank you!   -- MSTR (Happy New Year!) 12:14, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, James. Actually, admins do get quite agitated sometimes, but James is one of the calmer ones. Any general calmness is probably due to a weary seen-it-all-before feeling. The really messy move-sequences are where somebody writes his autobiography/CV on his user page, and then moves "User:MrHopeful" to "Wikipedia:MrHopeful" and then to "Template:Mr Hopeful" and on to "MrHopeful", his user talk page going with it while more messages arrive on his original talk page... On occasion I have found it simplest to delete the whole mess and compose a new series of explanations and warnings for the original user talk page. JohnCD (talk) 16:04, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
Deleting and starting over would be the good way to go about it, because that many redirects is absolutely ridiculous. If people like us, are having trouble understanding where the redirects lead to - how are the people who created them, supposed to remember the paths also - esp., newbies? If only they had a better understanding of how moving - or editing in general, works. Oh isn't Wikipedia a beautiful place? -- MSTR (Happy New Year!) 02:43, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Khandadhar Falls/ Khandadhar Fall

Thanks for setting Khandadhar Falls in order. While that was being done Harichandan kar was busy creating a new article Khandadhar Fall. Please see and decide what should be done. - Chandan Guha (talk) 16:26, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

The new article has some more information and pictures, so I don't think it should be deleted per WP:CSD#A10, but it is in too tourist-guide style. It should be merged into the existing Khandadhar Falls, and I have put "mergefrom" and "mergeto" templates on the articles, but I do not have time actually to get involved in the merge. I will add a note at WT:IN and hope some other editors can help. JohnCD (talk) 16:58, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Sorry, but Wikipedia is not for what you want to do. You want to advertise H & I Limos, but Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and one of the most important rules is that it is not for advertising or promotion of any kind. JohnCD (talk) 10:40, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

Why were my wikipedia pages deleted.

Hello Mr. John. I am messaging you on behalf of my WIKI Pages, staic gamez and Conner Gladden. I just would like to know why you deleted them. I made them so people could have information on Static Gamez, the development team, and information on Conner Gladden, the founder of it. I can surely say that Im not the only one to do this. I guarntee nintendo and ubisoft and berthesda all have wiki pages to inform people about them and i guarantee there is a wiki page on there founder. How come my pages were deleted when they are the same as those basically. Fireato (talk) 15:39, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

Quinnie Cody

Hello i am Messaging you in regards to the Quinnie Cody Wikipedia page. It has come to my attention that this page has been deleted. I had recently made changes to the Quinnie Cody Wikipedia page because upon visiting it, i learned that someone had put up false pictures, and also placed blame on him for a car accident that never occurred. This is what I had modified. While some of the "source input" may have not been correct for the photos etc. I would like to ask that you restore this page and possibly fix any errors i made in the "source input" that way it is not again deleted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.192.125.228 (talk) 18:46, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

The article was deleted because it had no references, but looking at the history I see that it did once have one, which was lost during later edits. Those later edits also introduced a good deal of unsourced material, some of it derogatory, so I have restored the article but gone back to the earlier, basic version. You are welcome to add to it, but first read Wikipedia's verifiability policy, and the important policy on WP:Biographies of living persons, which includes:

"Contentious material about living persons... that is unsourced or poorly sourced—whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable—should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion."

Additional references are also desirable to establish WP:Notability. JohnCD (talk) 21:02, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Raptocleidus

Hi JohnCD. Yes I'm new to Wikipedia, and don't understand the criteria fully, but I do understand the rules of zoological nomenclature. The placing of the genus name Raptocleidus on wikipedia risks it becoming a nomen nudum if others start to use it. Seeing as I coined the name in my phD thesis, perhaps I should have used the copyright tag in my request for speedy deletion. The user who created this page is either naive of the rules of zoological nomenclature (Raptocleidus is currently not a valid name as it has not been published in line with the ICZN) or they are being vexacious, and are out to cause me trouble. Thank you for redirecting the page to the pliosauroidea, BTW. Leictg (talk) 11:05, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

The redirection was done by user J. Spencer (talk · contribs), not me. From his contribution record, he is experienced in this area, so I have left a note on his talk page at User talk:J. Spencer#Raptocleidus asking for advice on what would be best to do. Please comment there. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 23:08, 11 January 2013 (UTC)
Hi, JohnCD;
I usually convert an article to a redirect if there might be some cause for concern (i.e., if it is in an embargoed publication but happened to slip out, or if, as in this case, it is from a thesis). In my experience, users don't generally question or investigate redirects. However, we could put it to an administrator versed in paleontology and familiar with nomenclatural issues (someone like Firsfron or Casliber), and see what they think about deleting it. Hiding an article through a redirect has the advantage of keeping the information handy, so that when the name is published, we don't have to build it from scratch. The major problem in this case is the fact that the article has been around for several months, so it is no longer hidden to the Internet. J. Spencer (talk) 01:00, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

Oops!

Hello, JohnCD! I think I may have made a slight error when I requested deletion here[1] - I probably should have moved the page to preserve the edit history. Is there any way to remedy this and get the editing history of my deleted subpage onto the LTA report by moving it? Sorry for any inconvenience I caused by this! Cheers :> Doc talk 11:54, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

Done - histories merged, no problem. JohnCD (talk) 12:31, 11 January 2013 (UTC)
Thank you very much! I did the same thing to User:Doc9871/Voice Cast Vandal awhile back, transferring it to LTA - so stupid of me not to think about moving it rather than copypasting it. I've learned my lesson for sure! Is there any way you could work your magic on that page as well to rescue the edit history? I appreciate your assistance in this matter a lot, and thanks again! Page move complexity

Hi. You helped me move a page recently: Ely and Littleport riots 1816 to Ely and Littleport riots of 1816. Thank you. Prior to the move, I had started a peer review at Wikipedia:Peer review/Ely and Littleport riots 1816/archive2. I noticed today that Piotrus (talk · contribs) has commented at Wikipedia:Peer review/Ely and Littleport riots of 1816/archive2 either from the peer review project page or more likely from the article talk page peer review hat. Now this is far too complex for me to fix. I did have a quick look at {{Peer review}} but could not see from there how to fix it. Are you able to help? --Senra (talk) 22:23, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

Too complicated for tonight, I'll fix it tomorrow. JohnCD (talk) 22:53, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
Fixed. I copied Piotrus' comment to the old page so that it's all in one place, and then moved the whole thing to the new title at Wikipedia:Peer review/Ely and Littleport riots of 1816/archive2, leaving a redirect. I told Piotrus what I have done. I don't see any need to move the "Archive1" page. JohnCD (talk) 11:59, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
Much appreciated. Thank you for your help --Senra (talk) 12:04, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

User:Doc9871/Hanoi Vandal

What's so "implausible" with this redirect? If the page had been moved properly a couple days ago, that redirect would be there. I created so wherever there is the link User:Doc9871/Hanoi Vandal (like on my talk page for example) it would take you to the correct page. --RacerX11 Talk to meStalk me 00:20, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi there, I saw your message on talk page of User:Khanshoaib2000 where you stated not to use personal information but the user has re-created an article about himself. Here is that article (currently on speedy nomination). Could you please delete the article and also give warning/block if it's needed. Thanks. Torreslfchero (talk) 14:23, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

I looked at this yesterday and saw it had already been deleted; but today it's back again, so I have deleted it again and given {{uw-create3}}. Thanks. JohnCD (talk) 10:13, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks but the user is back again. He is pasting his article into other articles as in this one. Torreslfchero (talk) 10:30, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
Blocked. He has had enough explanations and warnings - a case of WP:IDHT. Well spotted that his last try was hijacking someone else's article - I might well have zapped it. JohnCD (talk) 10:36, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi John, could you please help me in merging these two articles: Jilla(2013 film) and Jilla (2013 film), both have almost same content. However, I believe its better to merge into the later one. I'm quite clueless in merging. Thanks. Torreslfchero (talk) 21:10, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

Avinash_Agarwal

Hello JohnCD,

I have read what you mentioned in Whydeleted page. I would like to make a point in notice about the page. This page is meant for giving the information regarding a person who is about to expose the reality of "Infinity" which is a very importance topic in mathematics.

I've attended his seminars in India. He has really done a great work. I wanted to make his work publicly. I think it doesn't violate wikipedia's policies. I have also concerned him for the same and he allowed me to do so. It was just a formal start. I didn't mentioned much in the page.

I visited page today to add some other information, but I found page deleted. Please do inform me if you need any added information to re-active the page.

Best Regards Avinash

Imp: Don't get confuse with same name. We are having the same name. Aviag3087 (talk) 20:35, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

Even when Agarwal is ready to publish his theories, Wikipedia is not the place to do that. Read the policy WP:No original research, which includes: "If no reliable third-party sources can be found on a topic, Wikipedia should not have an article about it. If you discover something new, Wikipedia is not the place to announce such a discovery."
The test that decides whether there should be an article about Agarwal is called Wikipedia:Notability, and is not a matter of opinion but has to be demonstrated by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." Your article did not give any references, and I have looked but not found any. It sounds as though he is still in the "up and coming" stage of his career.
So I'm afraid it is too soon for an article. After he has published his theories, and they have been the subject of substantial comment in independent reliable sources, will be the time to think about writing one. JohnCD (talk) 21:59, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

Sanjana Sanghi

Hi. There are mentions online in some film blogs about her having a minor role in this film, so I'm not sure it can be speedied G3 as a blatant hoax. It's a possible hoax though, and if not, then the article certainly wouldn't survive an AFD on notability. Thanks, Altered Walter (talk) 11:51, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

Ah I see you've posted at Talk:Sanjana Sanghi about this, so I've posted there too: you might prefer to reply there. Thanks, Altered Walter (talk) 11:59, 14 January 2013 (UTC)
(edit conflict)We'll see what another admin thinks. I wanted a second pair of eyes, so I didn't zap it directly my self, but I think the absence from the official cast lists is fairly convincing. The online mentions are all Facebook and blogs and the like, nothing reliable, and many of them are copied from the WP film article, where the name was inserted by an SPA IP in March 12 and lingered for some time. JohnCD (talk) 12:07, 14 January 2013 (UTC)
Agreed. Well caught on the IP editor, by the way. Altered Walter (talk) 12:09, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

Dynamic Steady State Universe Theory

a copy for johncd

deletion of DSSU

hello Salih I understand if conrad ranzan's theory is considered too fringe to be included. Im not sure of the actual guidelines,i just wonder if the piece ive done could be considered for inclusion to "Non-standard cosmology" Is it worthwhile me doing something on Dissident science. I have no axe to grind.im not trying to convince anyone I merely state that the theory exists. --Harryflatters (talk) 19:07, 13 January 2013 (UTC) wow its gone already you guys must have to wade through a lot of stuff i cant believe how brutal you are LOL. ive been reading other peoples deletion notifications. Very blunt, maybe you guys could state at the outset how articles are most likely to be rapidly deleted. Less people would get this far I got invited in, now i feel like ive been slapped around a bit LOL regards shaun--Harryflatters (talk) 19:32, 13 January 2013 (UTC) --Harryflatters (talk) 19:39, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

The article has not been deleted - it's at Dynamic Steady State Universe Theory. Deletion has been proposed, and there is a discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dynamic Steady State Universe Theory. You are welcome to contribute there, but read WP:DISCUSSAFD first. The discussion will run for seven days, anyone can contribute, and after that an uninvolved administrator will decide what to do, based on the strength of the arguments put forward in terms of Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, not on a count of heads. The point at issue will be whether the theory is WP:Notable in Wikipedia's terms, which is not a matter of opinion but requires showing references to "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." The question is, have other people, besides Ranzan, taken his theory seriously enough to write substantial comment about it? This links to Wikipedia's policy of publishing WP:No original research, which includes: "If no reliable third-party sources can be found on a topic, Wikipedia should not have an article about it. If you discover something new, Wikipedia is not the place to announce such a discovery." JohnCD (talk) 21:25, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

ok

sounds reasonable, thanks this is where ive been trying to get to. I have seen mention of the theory in other publications such as google books etc. My intention has always been to see if it qualifies for inclusion anywhere, (in any form). I never started out to make it a pet project.Part of me wishes i never started, however its been interesting to see the process. I feel maybe it could be made clearer at the outset that the process can be a bit grueling, whether intended or not some comments can feel hostile and can come across as personal attacks regards shaun--Harryflatters (talk) 23:38, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

You have a point. Wikipedia is so anxious to encourage everyone to come and edit that it is reluctant to make people read anything before signing up, for fear of frightening them off. I think myself that a lot of wasted effort and disappointment would be saved if at sign-up time there was a message on the lines of "This is a project to build an encyclopedia. If you would like to help with that, welcome; but if you have come here to write about yourself, your band, your company, or generally in order to promote anything, this is probably not the site for you", with links to a page or so of more detail about what Wikipedia is not for. That would save people a vast amount of work writing spam and non-notable articles about garage bands and ambitious students, and it would save new page patrollers and admins a lot of work filtering them out and deleting them. It wouldn't have helped you, though, and it's hard to imagine the initial guidance that would have warned you it might be tough without frightening off potential contributors. I can only hope you got enough out of it not to be discouraged, so that you will try again. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 19:01, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

Roger Gardner, the Mysterious Mobster

John,

Someone had written on 'List of Irish American mobsters by era' which had Roger Gardner (d. 1992) was the key link between the Magaddino and Gambino crime families. I researched him, and could find nothing. I thought it was a hoax, but it turns out he was a real person, but no information.

You saw my post on there which asked you wrote it but with no reply and I've searched for three or four years now with no luck.

Do you know who wrote that in 2008 or 2009 on 'List of Irish American mobsters by era'?

I would like to ask them where they got the information, they have to be a contributor who writes articles.

All the best, Corey — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lonewolfcg (talkcontribs) 18:08, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

I did reply, on your talk page, four days ago.
If you see an orange bar across the screen saying "You have a new message", click the link "Talk" at the top of the screen just beside your username: that will take you to your user talk page User talk: Lonewolfcg, where new messages are normlly at the bottom. See the section headed "Roger Gardner - your talk page questions".
My message was bad news: Gardner's name was added to the list in Jan 2009 by user Claddaugh (talk · contribs), but that is the only edit that user ever made. You can see it by clicking "contribs" beside the name, and then "diff" in the entry on the contributions screen. So I'm afraid there is no way to follow that up, and if you can find no other information about Gardner, it will not be possible to make an article that will satisfy the WP:Verifiability and WP:Notability requirements. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 21:24, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

Scarborough Arts

Hello,

I created the page on behalf of User: Faizaarts to the article space. Inorder to reduce confusion, could you move the deleted article to his userspace and leave a note?

TheOriginalSoni (talk) 19:01, 18 January 2013 (UTC)

If it's copyright infringement, it can't be moved to the userspace. I'm assuming by the name of the user that they might own the copyright or have permission. I think the article read a bit promotional, so it would be better for them to start from scratch, but they could be explained the donating materials process. @JohnCD, sorry for not noticing the copyvio earlier, I saw the cut and paste move and stopped checking. @TheOriginalSoni, you can see some problems with cut and paste moves in the lead of Wikipedia:How to fix cut-and-paste moves. Particularly that it violates the CC-BY-SA license since the article is incorrectly attributed. Ryan Vesey 19:07, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, I was called to supper, hastily finished a message here, pressed "Save page", and didn't stay to see the "Edit conflict" response. My message said: No, sorry, it's a copyright violation from the organization's website (as might have been guessed from its tone), so I have also deleted copies from the user's user page and sandbox. I am about to write an explanation of the copyright issue, and also that (as Jayron32 said on the Teahouse Q&A page) "the article gives no indication it meets Wikipedia's minimum standards for inclusion, and the tone is wholly inappropriate for an encyclopedia", so that, though they could probably organize a release via WP:DCM, there would be no point. I have written an essay, User:JohnCD/Not a noticeboard, which covers some of the issues for this type of new user. JohnCD (talk) 19:57, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
Did the topic appear to you like it would be notable enough for inclusion if it was written correctly? I would consider writing it if it wasn't one that would take an immense amount of effort to establish notability. Ryan Vesey 20:00, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
With that sort of worthy local organization, it's hard to tell without doing the research. As WP:Avoid mission statements says, the trouble with them is that they all sound the same, and that's true of most of the websites of that kind of outfit. I can't say I read it with close attention - I smelt copyvio, put four or five random sentences into Google and they all came up as copies. I will explain notability etc to the user later today, and you could follow up with an offer to help, if they can find the sources. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 20:12, 18 January 2013 (UTC)

Absorption coefficient

Hi John, Thanks for getting back to me.

My problem is that I cannot make changes to "Absorption coefficient" because when I try to access that page I am automatically sent to "Attenuation coefficient". Polyamorph seems to have tried to change the name of "Attenuation coefficient" to "Absorption coefficient" but failed. Meanwhile an entry for Absorption Coefficient (with a capital C) exists and has been redirected to "Opacity (optics)"!

My point is that attenuation and absorption are different, although it seems that in the medical profession they are used interchangeably. In physics, engineering, and spectroscopy "absorption" involves transfer of energy to the medium. "Attenuation" is just loss of signal strength. Is it possible for you to make "Absorption coefficient" editable and to redirect "Absorption Coefficient" to "Absorption coefficient".

In the Bold, Revert, Discuss scenario it is not possible for me to Revert the merge, prior to a Discuss phase.

Cheers, Alastair A B McDonald (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 12:13, 18 January 2013 (UTC)

Pages which have been redirected can still be edited by anyone. If, for instance, ABC has been redirected to XYZ, clicking on ABC takes you to XYZ (or maybe to a subsection within XYZ); but if you then scroll up to the top of the XYZ page, just beneath the title you will see "Redirected from ABC". Now click on that "ABC" and you will be taken to the redirect page, and its history is available to you through the "View history" tab. So you can edit the redirect to point somewhere else, or replace it with new material, or go back to a previous version in the history.
The one case where admin assistance is needed is where it is required to move an existing page with a history to a different title which is already occupied. It is important not to do that by cutting and pasting, as that would lose the attribution history, which we are required by the license terms to maintain.
But in this case, I suggest making a draft proposal for how these articles should be organized, and getting some views from other users at WT:WikiProject Physics, before you go ahead. JohnCD (talk) 13:48, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply. Now I know that pages can be un-redirected I have now been able to make plans for a reorganisation. But it is a monstrous job and as I am busy with other things I will probably let it drop. Moreover, not only am I not an expert on attenuation, it seems doctors are not either using the term attenuation where the correct term is absorption. So what may be correct from a meteorological perspective is wrong from a medical perspective. I think it better not to step in where angels fear to tread :-) A B McDonald (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 11:12, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

Your deletion of my Workpage

John, you deleted my workpage!...

I placed a {{Db-u1}} template on the associated User page. Should I have placed a {{G8-exempt}} template on my workpage? If you'll recover it for me, I will be glad to add that exempt template to it. Thank you very much! – Paine (Climax!)  20:15, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

Restored! The talk page is normally deleted automatically with any page except a main user page. I don't think you should have any trouble now because it is an orphaned talk page. I've never seen {{G8-exempt}} before - it would do no harm to add it or, if you do find the talk page gets tagged with G8, you could always put something nominal into the corresponding user sub-page. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 20:27, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

Restored. Sorry about that - two of us moved it at the same time, so it ended up pointing to itself. The move has made a lot of double-redirects, but a bot should fix them in a few hours; I will check that it has, and do them manually if not. JohnCD (talk) 12:26, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

Doubletree Resort Lodge & Spa Fallsview

Hello. I am looking through the articles which have been tagged for notability for 5 years, and came across this, which you nominated as {db-spam}. It was removed. If you still feel it should be deleted, you might want to consider taking it to prod or AfD. Best wishes, Boleyn (talk) 09:44, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks. I'll think about it. Nearly five years on, I wouldn't now think it bad enough for {{db-spam}}, but I don't see any notability. JohnCD (talk) 12:09, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for editing and admin. You deleted page Talk:Lee Wan-yong. I don't know whether talks exist or not. Restore Talk:Lee Wan-yong if some talks existed. Sawol (talk) 11:49, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

Usernames

Just checked. It says "sometimes acceptable"; what I want to know is, is my eMail address of "sales002k@suttonlea.org" (SALES IS MY SURNAME) acceptable?--90.217.236.85 (talk) 19:07, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

I strongly advise against it. Your name is unfortunate, from this point of view. Wikipedia fights a constant battle against spammers and people who want to use it to promote something, and you would have continual trouble from people who assumed that you were a sales department. Even the "suttonlea.org" bit is undesirable, as implying that you are editing on behalf of that organization. Wikipedia accounts are only for individual volunteers, who are personally responsible for them, and your username should not raise any doubts about that. Sorry, JohnCD (talk) 19:53, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
Because of the conflicting opinions, I've put up a request for comment: Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/User_names#sales002k.40suttonlea.org. Your comments are welcome.--90.217.236.85 (talk) 11:56, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

No, I will not repost it, because Wikipedia is a serious encyclopedia, not a place for hoax articles or things made up one day for school projects; but I have emailed a copy to the email address registered with your account.
If you were told by your school to make a Wikipedia article as a project, please ask your instructor to read this, and also to look at Wikipedia:School and university projects. JohnCD (talk) 16:53, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

i just need to have the format and print it, thats all. i DONT need to keep it up. That was my instructors directions. So i would appreciate it if it wasnt deleted. Thank you for the copy and i will be reposting it and the printing the format. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JayKim16 (talkcontribs) 17:04, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

Please don't repost it as an article; instead, you can repost it in your user sandbox, which is: User:JayKim16/sandbox. Once you've printed it and done whatever you need, then put {{db-u1}} at the top of it. Writ Keeper 17:09, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
(He put it on his user page). JayKim, please, as WritKeeper says, put {{db-u1}} at the top when you've printed it (two curly brackets each side). I shall delete it after a day anyway, because that's not what user pages are for. I will put some suggestions on your talk page of sites where you could post it and it might be allowed to stay. Discography

I like your interpretation of A9 there... I was just coming back to it to see what I could do with it, and you'd done it. Ta. Peridon (talk) 16:23, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

I don't think that's a particularly creative use of A9: "discography" is a fine, pretentious word, but it's still an "article about a musical recording... " JohnCD (talk) 16:49, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

Have you never been on youtube? Igata and Scorpula are up and coming internet stars. So what you are saying is that: if a person is famous for making videos or taking part in a youtube phenomenon, they are not REAL people? Look it up on YouTube, it's right there. How about I question if YOU are real. Do YOU have a youtube page you can link me to? Do YOU have hours of video and 100's of pages of back and forth content that you can show me to PROVE that you are real? This is absolutely ridiculous. As ^ he said, do some research before you click your omnipotent "rejection" button. I would hate to see what happens when someone posts about a news event that you disagree with. Is that not acceptable either? This is a place for FREE and OPEN knowledge, not what knowledge JOHNCD thinks is REAL or not REAL. — Preceding unsigned comment added by RossLikeSauce (talkcontribs) 18:04, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

(comment from visitor) Wikipedia isn't for the 'up-and-coming'. It's for the arrived (and the past-it who were notable). We only cover very notable news stories - this is an encyclopaedia, not WikiNews or social media where you can post what you like. Provide reliable independent references - your YouTube thing is not independent. Peridon (talk) 18:13, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
(edit conflict)I said "if he is a real person" because it wasn't at all clear what your article was about, and to introduce the WP:BLP policy. I look at your Youtube link and I see "131 views" - that doesn't look like "famous" to me, and Wikipedia doesn't do WP:UPANDCOMING. Read WP:Your first article and WP:ENTERTAINER to see what an article needs if it is to be kept. JohnCD (talk) 18:18, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

I can't say this any other way that to be blunt: you seriously restored a deleted article three years after the PROD because an IP gave the word "reasoning" as reason to restore? I'm going ot AfD it, but to me, the whole scenario is ridiculous. MSJapan (talk) 05:54, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

No reason is required to contest a PROD. WP:DEL#Proposed deletion: "Even after the page is deleted, any editor can have the page restored by any administrator simply by asking." Copyvios or attack pages would not be restored, but otherwise it's automatic. JohnCD (talk) 10:03, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

Doubt !

Sir, I am having a Doubt that can anybody put an article for deletion who is not in any group like administrator, reviewer, rollbacker etc? Whitetararaj (talk) 16:53, 27 January 2013.

Only an administrator can actually delete an article, but any user, even an unregistered IP, can suggest that an article should be deleted. There are different ways to do that, described in WP:Deletion policy. JohnCD (talk) 20:49, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

The problem is Porsha Stewart is a famous tv personality and she should have a page on Wikipedia. She already has a social network following. Balutologic Information

As far as I know, the Buddha, as little as anyone else touched by the Balit, care about the outest form of the balit anymore than in its exact relation to its depth.

The everpresent power of Balut, further and more, claims its creation and ranging from the slowest to the fastest popping Balits, it surrender its knowing.

The right and whats left, join hands in the taste of balut.

Zoroaster tried in so many ways to find new ways of dropping the Balit, in his treeness, in his fire, he devoted his life to the making, and remaking of the flow of the Balutative, a trying beyond trying, a dance, of the balutative, where his being was totally devoured.

Leaving Newton as the only possible (in my humble opinion) point of doubt, and there I can nothing but apologize for the machinations of the slave-machine leading generations of people to the appeltree in search of their guit, and the surrendering of the beautiful to sin.

If we see through the appearance of Balit, can we come to anything else than the apreciation and devotedness to Balit.

It was deleted because it did not explain why he was important enough to have an article in an encyclopedia. Wikipedia is not a listing directory like LinkedIn. That's an awkward one, rather marginal. There have been quite a lot of other edits, but at a quick look they mostly seem trivial. I would have to do a more careful check before I would be happy to G7. From his edit summary it seems he is unhappy that others have been editing it. I will explain to him (tomorrow) that that is how Wikipedia works, and see if I can persuade him he doesn't want it deleted. JohnCD (talk) 21:32, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

Requesting content of deleted page

What was on User:Cooper1903? I'm having trouble answering to this request. Thank you! --Vincent Liu (something to say?) 13:06, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

Funny, I remembered that one and thought I had deleted it, but actually Athaenara (talk) did. It was a long, chatty history of this company, the sort of thing that might appear on their website (to my surprise it isn't actually copied from there). Athaenara's edit summary linked WP:UPNOT and WP:SOAP, but they may well not have seen that. So the first thing to tell them is that user pages are for the volunteers to say something about their Wikipedia work, not for pseudo-articles, see WP:UPNOT. (That's a common misunderstanding, because Myspace and the like do use user pages that way).
As an encyclopedia article, its tone was too informal: "Will Cooper was the first to work in the framing shop, which was owned and managed by a local preacher. However, after a scandal involving his choir soprano... " and promotional: "This intimate venue provides an inexpensive alternative... " and it gave none of the independent references required for notability.
Guitar Center is not a user page and (though they are pretty thin) it does have some independent refs. Let me know if you need any more help dealing with them. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 15:54, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

Question on Policy

Hello JohnCD, In a situation where a user repeatedly recreates content which has been CSD'd at want point would we consider reporting them for a temporary block (if at all)? Where about would we request such an admin action if appropriate? Just as an example, currently User:Thelifeindark is creating and recreating articles which (I assume) relate to his/her band and album they intend to produce. It has been speedied a few times and they continue to recreate. Usually I've found that after a few times the editor gives up anyway but I was wondering if there's a particular policy or course of action that is more effective?

Popping up here since I got a request on my talkpage to offer my opinion: repeatedly creating inappropriate articles without discussion (especially in the face of repeated warnings and deletions) constitutes disruptive editing, and is grounds for a block. I've left Thelifeindark a final warning, and will block them if they carry on. Yunshui  14:08, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, Yunshui. Cabe, the right warnings to give are the uw-create sequence, say {{uw-create3}} when the inappropriate article has been created three times, perhaps with an extra explanation of why it's inappropriate, e.g. link to WP:MUSICBIO or WP:AUTO, then {{uw-create4}}, then if created yet again report to WP:AIV. JohnCD (talk) 14:26, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for the responses guys, exactly what I was looking for. Very helpful. Cabe6403 (TalkSign) 14:31, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Wikipedia page deletion

Dear Wikipedia Team,

I am Srilatha writing to you from Bodhtree (www.bodhtree.com ), recently I have created Wikipedia page, I have updated the valid company information fulfilling the basic criteria and guidelines. I found today that our wiki page (Bodhtree) has been deleted. Please guide me to recreate the page, in case I have missed following certain guidelines, you may help me to follow your rules and any other criteria to update our company information.

I hope we will be able to create our Wiki page at the earliest.

I will be glad to receive an early replay from you.

Regards, Srilatha — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.195.185.66 (talk) 11:09, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

I presume that you are user Bodhtreebt (talk · contribs), whose account I blocked because Wikipedia accounts must be for individals only, and we do not permit accounts whose names are names of groups or companies. One reason is that company accounts are always here to promote themselves, but Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and is not to be used as a platform for advertising or promotion of any kind.
I have looked at the history of the article, and I see that until a few days ago there was a reasonable short article, but then IP 182.72.66.222 (registered to Bodhtree) and User:Bodhtreebt began to edit it, and made it so promotional that it was deleted. Their version was written in the first person: "Our singular focus is measurable success... We achieve this mission... " etc, and listed all the company's products and "solutions" like a marketing brochure. It was the company talking to potential customers; but that is an advertisement, not an encyclopedia article, and anything like that is deleted from Wikipedia at sight.
I have restored the article as it was before it was spammed up. If it is re-spammed, it will be deleted again. If you wish to edit again, you should set up an account for yourself as an individual, and you should read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and Wikipedia:Best practices for editors with conflicts of interest. Please understand that this is not a place for your company to tell the world about itself, it is not "your Wiki page" - it is Wikipedia's article about your company. You should not edit it directly, but may make suggestions on the article talk page. JohnCD (talk) 16:54, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Deletion of Kimmetting

Hi JohnCD, I saw that you closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kimmetting four days early, citing WP:BLP, WP:NEO and WP:NFT. As far as I know, none of those constitute grounds for early closing of an AfD—unless you were going for a sneaky WP:SNOW... or am I missing something? I'm trying to learn as much as I can about deletion etc so I'd be really grateful to know why speedy was an appropriate close in this case :) —Noiratsi (talk) 18:02, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

That's a good question. There has never been consensus for a "Blatantly WP:NFT" speedy; they are sometimes deleted as WP:CSD#G3 hoax or vandalism (if so silly that nobody could reasonably have supposed they improved the encyclopedia), and I actually put G3 on the deletion form for this; but what made it a definite speedy-delete was the BLP aspect. It was nominally about this newly-invented word, but it described two named, male, persons and how cutely they were in love. WP:BLP includes the important instruction:

"Contentious material about living persons... that is unsourced or poorly sourced – whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable – should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion."

and I quoted that on the article author's talk page to explain the deletion. JohnCD (talk) 18:33, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
That makes sense; thanks very much for the reply. —Noiratsi (talk) 13:49, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Notification of discussion

A few months ago, you participated in a discussion on Wikipedia talk:Did you know about Gibraltar-related DYKs on the Main Page. I am proposing that the temporary restrictions on such DYKs, which were imposed in September 2012, should be lifted and have set out a case for doing so at Wikipedia talk:Did you know/Gibraltar-related DYKs. If you have a view on this, please comment at that page. Prioryman (talk) 21:48, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Didn't fully understand the message from you

Hello Sir, I received a message from you but I did not understand it completely. I have recently started editing on Wikipedia and still not very used to it. Am I making any gross mistakes? Thanks and regards, (AppaBalwant (talk) 15:18, 14 February 2013 (UTC))

No, you are not doing anything wrong! I saw in the recent changes list that your talk page was a "redlink", which meant that you had never had any messages, so I gave you a message to welcome you to Wikipedia and give links to some pages that may be useful to you - that's all. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 21:21, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Oh, ok ... Thanks a ton for dropping by... I think this the spirit that is keeps Wikipedia growing ... Will certainly go through the pages suggested by you. Regards — Preceding unsigned comment added by AppaBalwant (talkcontribs) 07:31, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi you delted my page even after i cahnged it you guys really need to give more information on exactly what is infringing your advert rules as if a simple history and about a company is worng then you need to look at some more of the GSP market wikis that are on here as they have the same style of content as i had as i used them as a guidline on what i could and couldnot put

more information on why it was deleted before i got chance to properly edit it would be good please — Preceding unsigned comment added by Reaper021 (talkcontribs) 14:12, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

ok so wiki says i was advertising great so i guess rules dont apply to others then? like this one for example has a web site link to their site it is promoting services and it is in same context as mine which i was still editing yet when i went to preview it was deleted http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiplay_UK

i think a little press coverege on this will be good as it seems like a situation of 1 rule for 1 and another for another unless i get clear answers im afriad i have no choice but to goto the press on this and actully let people know whats is going on on the big wiki sites

so please let me know why i have been removed instantly yet this company have had trheres up for ages

Wikipedia's rules about advertising are simple: don't. Don't write about yourself, don't write about your own company. That's not what an encyclopedia is for. Read WP:Conflict of interest and WP:Best practices for editors with conflicts of interest.
What you wrote was an announcement from your company, in the first person, designed to say how wonderful it is: "We appreciate our clients business needs... Our precise reputation... With the knowledge of our team and the power and speed of our top-spec servers... our knowledgeable and friendly staff... " That is not an encyclopedia article, it is an advertisement, and anything like that is deleted at sight.
I will not restore what you wrote because nothing remotely like that is acceptable. Later today, I will give you advice on your talk page designed to save you wasting a lot of time and effort. You can start by reading WP:Your first article and the WP:FAQ/Organizations. JohnCD (talk) 14:40, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

ok so in response toy uor message why is this company allowed to do same thing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiplay_UK They have named persons , have content stating " are one of the leading GSP’s in the world" , "also host high availability and high scalability platforms for websites and games","They have achieved mass exposure as the producers of the UK’s largest Games Festival" and also link their website on the wiki. This is my argument with you you are allowing another person to do as i have done yet they stay on i get deleted please answer me this question WHY??? Toby Turner page

Hi, I noticed you deleted and creation-protected the Toby Turner page back in July last year. I have subsequently produced a new version of the page behind closed doors and would like to have this protection lifted so the page can be published. The subject in question is now notable, starring in a mainstream network television show and other web series (see Jack Douglass and Ray William Johnson, for reference), and I have several external, independent references to back up his life and career. Let me know how we proceed from here please, so we can get the ball rolling. Cheers! Andre666 (talk) 18:34, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

This is a not uncommon case of someone who tried, or his supporters tried, to get an article too soon and too often. Articles about him have been deleted at least a dozen times, and there have been two deletion discussions at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Toby Turner and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tobuscus. Maybe he has now done enough to achieve notability; you have done the right thing to make a draft, and what you should do is go to WP:Deletion review - where it has already been once, see Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2012 October 27 - and link to your draft article. Let me know if you need any help navigating the DRV listing procedure. JohnCD (talk) 22:47, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
Haha yeah, a lot of his fans are very young and... what's the best word?... keen, so it's no surprise you've had to protect it in the past! I will go through the deletion review process imminently; I want to improve on my draft first. Thanks for the help! Andre666 (talk) 22:57, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

MfD for no longer stale draft

Hello, John. Thanks for letting me know about the situation at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Ktfield/Mark Wilkinson. I have, naturally, withdrawn my nomination. And, of course, you are not the only admin who sometimes deletes a page, then looks at the talk page, and thinks "oops!" JamesBWatson (talk) 09:01, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

Deleting of the page "Josh London"

This article should not be speedily deleted for lack of asserted importance because... I randomly hit articles on english version of Wikipedia and came across a page about some music industry of some kind. There they had list a couple of singers, all with links to it's main page, without this guy "Josh London". I google'd him and came across that he's a singer and have his own serious website, released an EP in 2010 etc. I then started to build a wikipedia page, as I always do, when there's obviously a missing page. I also wrote an article about his EP that he released in 2010, Josh London E.P.. I love to contribute to Wikipedia, and can't see why this page shall be removed when all my others articles, both on swedish wikipedia and english wikipedia has been appricieated. --Psemmler (talk) 15:57, 20 February 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Psemmler (talkcontribs)

See WP:MUSICBIO for what a musical performer needs to have achieved before having a Wikipedia article. Having his own website and releasing an EP is not enough. For the EP, see WP:NALBUMS. JohnCD (talk) 16:03, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
Are we talking about John London here? There doesn't seem to be a Josh around   Basket Feudalist 16:18, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

Never knew such an exemption right existed, that will make things easier in the future. :) One more request; can you revdel/oversight/whatever all of that? Not keen about plastering info into viewable spaces, I hate that the template requires it. Tarc (talk) 17:08, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

Global Security (.org)

Hello John, My name is elaine, and I noticed on the Wiki pages wanted the GlobalSecurity.org page. Since you are the deleting administrator I wanted to ask you before starting one, and find out what the previous page was like, and just basically get some background on it. I thought this would be a good fit for me since I'm interested in Security. However I did peruse the site, and join the forums and it looks like a "soldier' for hire kind of place maybe. I'll have to look at it when I have more time and check into some references unless you already have?

Regards ~elaine. --Eossipov (talk) 13:27, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

Actually, what I deleted was Globalsecurity.org (small s) which was just a redirect to the main article GlobalSecurity.org which was deleted by MBisanz (talk) after WP:Articles for deletion/GlobalSecurity.org. As you will see, the concern was absence of significant coverage in reliable independent sources; but if you can find references to supply that need, you could certainly have a go. The article was not particularly spammy, and if you like I will userfy it for you (undelete it and move it into a subpage in your user space, where you can work on it). Before making it live, you should check first with MBisanz, who may tell you to go to WP:Deletion review. JohnCD (talk) 21:51, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

Please stop the move of "List of longest ruling non-royal national leaders since 1870" to "List of longest ruling non-royal national leaders since 20th century"

1.) Porfirio Díaz, who is on this list, governed during the 19th -and- 20th centuries. 2.) "Since 20th century" is grammatically incorrect in English. – Jwkozak91 (talk) 19:36, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

The move went the other way: the article is now at List of longest ruling non-royal national leaders since 1870, where it has been since you moved it there last December, and I do not see any proposal to move it back. All that I did today was move the talk page to catch up with the article. JohnCD (talk) 20:23, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

chess.com

I believe the chess.com article should be re-instated, if merely as a stub to begin with, that cites its significance as follows:

It's close to being in the top 2000 sites worldwide (and top 1500 for the US): http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/chess.com#

It's the number 1 chess site in the world: http://www.alexa.com/topsites/category/Top/Games/Board_Games/Abstract/Battle_Games/Chess

What say? I've not written a wikipedia article yet, and would like to give this one a try. I am not affiliated with chess.com (in fact I have my share of run-ins with them ;) and am positive I could be objective. Whether it stays that way after it is begun, is of course the question -- however I would also claim that, rather than deleting if things get out of hand, things could always get rolled back to a very minimal stub again, merely citing alexa.com statistics.

Thanks for your consideration Jemptymethod (talk) 01:27, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

You are welcome to try, but be aware that the article was deleted after a deletion discussion at WP:Articles for deletion/Chess.com, and that deletion was challenged but endorsed at Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2013 February 9. The problem is that although people in these discussions say the site is important, what Wikipedia goes by is not opinions like that but published sources, "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject", see the WP:GNG and WP:ANS. If you can find sources, I will "userfy" the article for you (move it into a subpage in your user space where you can work on it). Before making it live, you would need to convince me that you have overcome the problems that cause deletion at the AfD; if I'm not persuaded, you could take it back to DRV. But find the published sources to establish notability first. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 11:14, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

Hello!

Hiya John

Could you please take a look at this edit on my talk page and see if there's anything else you can advise to get the IP to listen to reason?

I came across this IP when he vandalised ClueBot's talk page. I must admit I very nearly blocked the IP for going back to the same disruptive editing as yesterday as it is only one page (Michael McIntyre) that he has an issue with and because ClueBot had started the warning process again. The IP was editing against consensus by changing Michael McIntyre's occupation from comedian to Britain's Got Talent judge, from what I can see it is because he doesn't think Michael McIntyre is funny. I've now put pending changes protection on Michael McIntyre's page because I've taken his edits as both vandalism and content dispute so the article is taken care of, however the IP is coming across as very aggressive. If you look, on my talk page they are disputing that their edit to ClueBot's talk page is vandalism, and apparently I don't know what I'm doing so they're suggesting I resign! If you look on their talk page history you will see that they have been quite aggressive to other editors.

The warning I placed on their talk page simply warned them against vandalism and I pointed out as they were editing Michael McIntyre in the same fashion as they did yesterday then they were running the risk of being blocked for longer. You have more admin experience than me, is there anything you can think to add to my talk page to get the IP to see the error of their ways?--5 albert square (talk) 00:03, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

I have left a note about WP:BRD, WP:CIVIL and WP:AGF on the IP's talk page, but I am not optimistic about their prospects. Their unblock request could be a textbook example of how not to do it. JohnCD (talk) 12:42, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks! Neither am I, I thought their unblock request was very rude and they now seem to be repeating the same sort of edits that they were doing to Michael McIntyre's page on the Bebo page. I've no doubt they will be blocked again before long.
By the way, do you know why ClueBot wouldn't have gone to AIV regarding that IP? Looking at the page the bot warned the IP only a few hours after the block expired. Surely that should have been reported straight to AIV instead of the warning process again as the IP had literally just come off the block?--5 albert square (talk) 20:34, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
No, I think Cluebot might at least have started higher up the warning scale. You could ask its owner about how it handles recent blocks. JohnCD (talk) 00:35, 25 February 2013 (UTC)

hoax advice

I just came across your userpage following a edit you made elsewhere. I'm virtually a wiki-baby and so new to this game and just finding my way around, but I have nominated a page or two for deletion due to my suspicion that they were fabrications, so it is an area I'm very interested in. I'd be grateful for any advice you can offer on how to get started on this sort of work and is there a project page or anything that is particularly relevant? --nonsense ferret 18:07, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Interesting question. Immediate ideas: WP:CSD#G3 blatant hoax should be used only for really obvious cases, because the world is odder than you might think (would you believe a festival to celebrate the culture of people of mixed Croatian-Maori descent? Check out Tarara Day!). The template {{hoax}} is a useful one to put on an article you have doubts about: it puts it into CAT:HOAX where other people may pick it up and look into it. Conversely, CAT:HOAX is a place to look for things to investigate. I'll answer in more detail on your talk page in a day or two when I've thought about it. JohnCD (talk) 00:30, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
Very helpful, much appreciated. I'm finding at times that some articles are on the face of it supported by newspaper articles, and I think that it sounds improbable, but is difficult to know how much could and should be done to identify inconsistencies without possibly straying into the category of original research. I really get the impression that there is very little in the way of fact checking that goes on in a lot of publications these days which doesn't help our job much :) I look forward to anything you might be able to add in due course. --nonsense ferret 00:38, 25 February 2013 (UTC)

You've twice protected this page. The second time after I re-requested page-protection on your talk page here (bottom of page). NGO Committee on the Status of Women, Geneva

Dear JohnCD,

I just noticed you deleted the page I created this morning, because of "copyright infrigement"!

I am the Secretary of this Consortium of NGOs, that has existed since 1973, and I am also the webmaster of the website of this committee. Hence the Copy and Paste from the introduction. Why should I reformulate differently the explanation on this Commitee? I apologize for this maybe stupid question, but this is the first article I created!

We (the Bureau of this Committee) decided to create an article on Wikipedia after seeing that our sister committee in New York, the NGO Committee on teh Status of Women, New York, has an article on wikipidia, and decided to have a similar page.

Please explain what is wrong in doing so!?! And how can I restore this page?

With many thanks in advance and best regards,

Valerie Bichelmeier, alias japonismus (to check wether I am the secretary / webmaster of the NGO CSW Geneva, may I suggest that you use the contact form of our website: www.ngocsw-geneva.ch and I'll answer you per EMail?) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Japonismus (talkcontribs) 16:45, 25 February 2013 (UTC)

Short answer: Wikipedia is not a place for people or organizations to write about themselves. Long answer: I have already explained in detail on your user talk page at User talk:Japonismus. JohnCD (talk) 16:58, 25 February 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the quick answer! But 1) the reason given for "speedy deletion" is "Coyright Infringement", which is not the case; and 2) I do not write about myself & I am not paid to write an article on the NGO CSW Geneva, and not paid either to be the secretary and the webmaster of this committee: I do 100% volunteer work! I am wondering WHO wrote all the articles on NGOs???? Thanks for your help! Japonismus (talk) 18:13, 25 February 2013 (UTC)

1) A substantial part was copied from a page labelled "© NGO Committee for the Status of Women, Geneva - 2011". For legal reasons, we have to be extremely careful about copyright, and someone on the end of a wire saying it's OK is not enough. 2} I too am a volunteer, like everyone at Wikipedia, but the fact that you are the secretary of the organization still gives you, in our terms, a conflict of interest in writing about it. I will give more advice on your talk page, but maybe not until tomorrow. Meanwhile, you could read User:JohnCD/Not a noticeboard and the General Notability Guideline. JohnCD (talk) 18:41, 25 February 2013 (UTC)

I am not understanding your close of this. As the author has not edited recently, where are you getting the WP:CSD#U1 from, please? Warden (talk) 20:42, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Although he hasn't edited recently, he was evidently watching. It is no longer visible in his contributions because the page was deleted, but the deleted page history shows:
19:06, 24 February 2013 . . B137 (talk | contribs | block) (2,809 bytes) (Requesting speedy deletion (CSD U1). (TW))

User:Raymarcbadz/Andrei Kazak

User:Raymarcbadz has now, for a third time, done a cut&paste move. This time back out of user space into article space. So once again the history is no longer with the article. Since you did the move to user space, I don't want to wheel war with you over this, but IMHO the history cannot remain separate from the article. - TexasAndroid (talk) 16:56, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

Just to be clearer, my inclination is to (for a third time) fix the messed up history trail caused by his cut&paste move, and issue him a sterner warning to stop the cut&paste moves. But you moved it to user space in the first place, so I don't want to step on your toes in the matter. - TexasAndroid (talk) 17:00, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

No, I didn't do the move to userspace, he did. I declined his G7 speedy with this message (which he has blanked), he replaced the speedy, I undid that and protected the page but he did the move to userspace just before.
See latest remarks on his talk page, which I don't understand. Do you know what all this is about? The history seems to start on 8 Feb with him posting the article and immediately db-G7-ing it, but that is presumably a continuation of some previous row. I emailed RHaworth to ask what's going on, but I don't think he's online.
Yes, the history ought to be brought back together but (depending on the background) I am wondering whether it might be better to IAR this one and let it be, while telling him he can't behave like this again. There isn't a serious attribution problem because all the content is from him, the rest of the history is silliness. JohnCD (talk) 17:13, 28 February 2013 (UTC)
Addendum: now I understand, having worked through his talk page archive. He has a thing about the "Help improve this article" message that the Article Feedback Tool v5 puts on a random percentage of new articles, and if an article he posts gets one he G7s it and tries again. I will explain to him that the message is not a criticism of the article, just part of the background, and that the WMF will probably increase the frequency towards 100% so his strategy will become unworkable. As a matter of IAR, I do not think the encyclopedia would be improved by re-attaching that ridiculous history, so unless you disagree I will explain it all in simple terms, and tell him that more cut and paste moves will not be tolerated, but leave this article as it is. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 18:16, 28 February 2013 (UTC)
Ok. Not ideal, but you appear to have a better grasp on the whole situation than I did. So I'll bow out and let you handle things going forward. Sorry for missing that it was him who did both the move to user space *and* the cut&paste back. Sheesh. What a mess. - TexasAndroid (talk) 18:33, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

Deleted my page, wasn't even submitted?

Hello John! I was redirect here after seeing that I was attempting to make a page, but you deleted it. However, I do not recall even saving the page, I was not even nearly done. I left my computer idling for quite a bit of time when I came back, I was unable to edit, because it says I did not have permissions. Why has this happened? I was not even a fifth of my way into finishing the page. Would be nice if you could respond as soon as possible, thank you :). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tester1000 (talkcontribs) 03:00, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

What page was it? You have no deleted contributions, in fact this message to me is the only edit this account has made since September 2011. Probably the system timed you out, so that when you came back you were not logged-in. You can't create a page unless you are logged in, so that would account for a message saying you did not have permission; but what was the message you got that said I deleted something? He'd just copy-pasted Adolf Hitler over his talk page. I've reverted it. Two amusing aspects: (a) that IP is registered to the US Navy, and (b) when Adolf was added, the bot tagged it "possible self-promotion in user space." JohnCD (talk) 14:39, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

Deletion of edits and of an upload

Hi There,

I left my wiki logged in on my work PC and some had made edits to

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_(ethology)

as well as uploading

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Brett_Gillard_-_Alpha.jpg

both I have tried my best to correct, but id love to not have a history of vandalizing pages!

Thanks very much for any help

Fixed. The edit to Alpha (ethology) was immediately self-reverted. I have deleted the image by WP:CSD#G7 author requests deletion, as it was uploaded from your account. Never, ever leave a logged-in terminal unattended. "Someone else used my account" usually means an immediate, permanent block, see WP:GOTHACKED. JohnCD (talk) 16:42, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

Thank you very much, my PC was actually locked at the time, as I work in IT, my colleague has access to my account..

Frasier Crane/version 2

Should User:George Ho/Frasier Crane (version 2) be Frasier Crane/version 2 instead without namespaces? --George Ho (talk) 09:32, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

Actually, after that, I'll redirect it to Frasier Crane. --George Ho (talk) 09:34, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
Sub-pages made by "/" don't work in the main space - that would make a parallel article entitled "Frasier Crane/version2" on the same level as "Frasier Crane", and that's not a good idea. JohnCD (talk) 09:38, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for your feedback. I have not added the same link to multiple articles, rather I have added eight different links to seven articles, so only one link was repeated twice. As I said, I made some very pertinent contributions to these articles and enriched the knowledge further. I do not consider it as 'promotional'. It will be nice if you can help in bringing back the contributions.

Nomination of Steven Crowder for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Steven Crowder is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Steven Crowder (3rd nomination) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article.

I figured I would post this on your talk page because you made an insightful comment on this article's deletion review, the first time it was deleted. Rogerthat94 (talk) 09:36, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

Done - as a contested proposed deletion, the article has been restored on request, though it seems to me that it comes under WP:NOTMANUAL. It certainly needs a reference, to comply with WP:Verifiability. JohnCD (talk) 10:57, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

I have added a reference and double checked the article against the reference. Is this sufficient?Tony1athome (talk) 20:50, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

I presume you are user Dempseydrewq (talk). The reasons are explained on your talk page: (a) Wikipedia is not a business listing dirctory and there is no indication that this is notable enough to have an article, and (b) Wikipedia is not a place for people to write about themselves or their own companies, because of the conflict of interest involved. Why did you delete my article too?

Hi JohnCD I am a newbie on here and I saw you too deleted my article and gave no explanation for it. What is happening, noone is explaining anything? (Ladytwentytwo (talk) 21:03, 12 March 2013 (UTC))

Your draft article hasn't been deleted, but it has been moved from Wikipedia:Articles for creation/Bad Tune Men to Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Bad Tune Men - note the talk after Wikipedia - and that's where you should work on it. For technical reasons these draft articles have to be at a "Wikipedia talk" address. User Hasteur (talk) explained that on your talk page - see the message at the bottom of it. JohnCD (talk) 21:16, 12 March 2013 (UTC)
Thanks JohnCD now I understand, I didn't know that before. I also didn't understand Hasteur's actions, I understand now from what you said, thanks for your help. What does CDSing mean?(Ladytwentytwo (talk) 21:21, 12 March 2013 (UTC))
"CSD" is code for speedy deletion. He meant putting a tag like {{db-author}} on it to ask for it to be deleted, as a matter of tidying up; but don't worry, I've done that. JohnCD (talk) 21:27, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

List of Districts of England by Population Density

What would the correct procedure for this be? It certainly doesn't belong here, it's implausible!--Launchballer 22:16, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

You could nominate it at WP:Redirects for deletion, but check the section WP:RFD#When should we delete a redirect? first. JohnCD (talk) 22:21, 12 March 2013 (UTC)
Oh yes there is. Typing in the URL into http://www.bing.com brings up three results, one of which is the article, and the other two link to http://www.factbites.com; clicking those links reveal no actual links to the article. At the very least the redirect page should be List of districts in England by population density.--Launchballer 22:36, 12 March 2013 (UTC)
Well, take it to WP:RFD if you like, but I doubt if you'll get any traction. JohnCD (talk) 22:42, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks!

Hi John, I just wanted to say thanks for your time and patience in cleaning up the talk page of Julia Görges. I had been following the drama last night and again this morning and couldn't believe the actions of the main party involved. We've all been there, when something on Wikipedia, namely a WP:RM doesn't go your way, but that wasn't the right way to behave and the block(s) were all well deserved. So thanks for helping out on that one, I appreciate your actions. Have a nice afternoon! Jared Preston (talk) 14:16, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

No worries! An interesting morning. It's surprising how completely off the rails people can go over a trivial issue. List of songs whose title does not appear in the lyrics

Hi JohnCD! I discovered that you restored and moved List of songs whose title does not appear in the lyrics a few yars ago. I cannot find it in your user space, what happened to it? I would like to add it to my collection of similar articles that were deleted. I believe that I started this short-lived song list craze back then because I created unrelated songs with identical titles in response to a mass-nomination of lots of List articles in 2004. — Timwi (talk) 15:45, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

Not any time soon, after that extraordinary explosion. I have not come across them before, but looking at the talk page I agree it seems quite out of character, enough to make me wonder whether this is a case of a compromised account - not that that would help, per WP:COMPROMISED. Restore my article please

Hello, could you please restored my page about Derrion Tolanski? Thank you! Danicek06 (talk) 10:22, 19 March 2013 (UTC)danicek06

No, see the answer to your request at WP:REFUND#Derrion Tolanski. To have an article, you would need to show notability by giving references to "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." See WP:42 for what that means, and WP:MUSICBIO for the standard for musical performers. Being on Youtube is not enough. If you assure me that you can find independent references like that, I will restore the article into a user sub-page for you to work on; but if not, you will be wasting your time, and if you just keep posting it under different titles you may be blocked from editing. Wikipedia is not a place for Tolanski to pursue his aim of "using the Internet to independently promote his own music". JohnCD (talk) 10:50, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi

Hello! I really dont understand why you keep deleting the article about Derrion Tolanski! Almost everyone knows him in Canada so I think you should keep it alive! Tell me what I have to do to not delete it please!! Danicek06 (talk) 10:50, 19 March 2013 (UTC)danicek06

Read the reply just above. Can you find references to significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources? JohnCD (talk) 10:55, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

RE

Ok so you deleted my article only for this "Tolanski is known for using the Internet to independently promote his own music" however I just found this on Lisa Lavie's article "Lavie is known for using the Internet to independently promote her own music and concerts." and her article is not deleted! It was my firt article and I would love to have it here please! Danicek06 (talk) 10:57, 19 March 2013 (UTC)danicek06

No, I did not delete it because of that line. For about the fifth time, I deleted it because it gave no indication that he is notable enough to have an article here. Just read all the advice you have been given, and now put up or shut up: yes or no, can you find significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources - references that show people independent of Tolanski consider him important enough to write substantial comment about, and that he meets the standard of WP:MUSICBIO? JohnCD (talk) 11:07, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

Question

Can I ask which kind od article I could create to keep it visible? Thank you! Or Wikipedia is only for big celebrities? Danicek06 (talk) 14:10, 19 March 2013 (UTC)danicek06

Wikipedia is for people (and things) that are notable. The test of notability is whether other people, independent of them, have thought them important and significant enough to write substantial content about. Being in Wikipedia is not a way to get famous: first someone gets famous, then other people write about them, then there can be a Wikipedia article based on those independent sources. Read:

Dear JohnCD,

Would you please kindly explain to me, why you deleted that article ?

User dietger — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dietger (talkcontribs) 18:22, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

The article as you created it had a "template" at the bottom implying that it was intended as a submission to WP:Articles for creation. Another user helpfully moved it to Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Marguerite Müller-Yao which is the right place to put it in the AfC queue, and left you a note on your user talk page at User talk:Dietger. The article is still there: all that I deleted was the redirect left behind by the move. Clicking on the "redlink" Marguerite Müller-Yao shows you the deletion log's record of what happened. I didn't notice that in the history. You were quite right, pages that have survived AfD shouldn't normally be speedied, but in this case the keep result seems to have been on the basis that some of the bundled nomination might be notable, and as you point out this article wasn't actually among those listed. If anybody objects, I'll relist it, but it seems an absolutely clear A7 to me. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 17:09, 21 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the discussion on my talk page

I think I may understand what is happening. Its occurred to me that there may be a simple misunderstanding by many editors that are confusing the definition of "Conflict of interest" with our policies on a COI. The off Wiki definition is: "A conflict of interest (COI) occurs when an individual or organization is involved in multiple interests, one of which could possibly corrupt the motivation for an act in another." While our definition of a "COI editor" is: "When advancing outside interests is more important to an editor than advancing the aims of Wikipedia." The distinction is important on a number of levels. First, we must remember that this is indeed an encyclopedia that anyone may edit. As long as any editor is conforming to the spirit of Wikipedia as well as the policies, guidelines and procedures they are encouraged to continue. As an editor retention issue we don't wish to chase off editors that are participating with best practices.

As a conflict resolution issue we must be able to understand this policy as it is written and as community consensus has established. I think the recent issue on Jimbo's talk page has shown that many editor simply do not grasp our behavioral guideline on this issue and that perhaps we may need a community wide discussion to better write that page or, even redefine it if needed. The challenges we face here are not insurmountable nor are the differences, but it is vital that this policy be understood better or re-written to conform to the community standard, whatever that may be. I have a great deal of experience with COI editors. We have a number of fan bases that have clearly shown that their goals conflict with the goals of the encyclopedia. Combating this COI has been daunting for me and I have been the subject of a number of off wiki attacks over it. But I am clear about this. If an editor is editing the article in order to promote their fan site, their POV and their original research, they are in conflict with or policies and are a COI editor. What are your thoughts on this?--Amadscientist (talk) 01:47, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

This needs a considered response - watch this space! JohnCD (talk) 14:39, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

BattleTech Collectible Card Game

Please restore this; I didn't realize it was prodded until it was deleted - I'd have removed the prod and tried to address the concerns. I'll try to do so tomorrow once I have access to the article. Thanks, --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 17:10, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

Done - as a contested proposed deletion, the article has been restored on request. I will notify Some guy (talk), who PRODded it, but tell him you plan to improve it. Are you also interested in Military Organization (BattleTech), which I deleted at the same time? JohnCD (talk) 18:04, 23 March 2013 (UTC)
Well, those fiction entries are difficult to find sources for, and are probably already better covered at BattleTech wiki. I stopped trying to defend them a while ago, so thanks, but I won't challenge that one :) --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 02:24, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
