Wikipedia is not for writing about yourself

Welcome to Wikipedia, but it is not a place like LinkedIn or Facebook for people to write about themselves. It is a different sort of site, a project to build an encyclopedia, so it is selective about subjects for articles, and writing about oneself is strongly discouraged, for reasons explained at Wikipedia is not about YOU and Wikipedia:Autobiography. Advice and explanation

I am sorry to be late - I promised you more information yesterday, but somehow it dropped off my to-do list.

Although many people approach Wikipedia as another social-networking or "noticeboard" site like Myspace or Facebook, it is in fact quite different. It is a project to build an encyclopedia, and two of the consequences of that are:

• the Wikipedia:Verifiability policy, which says that: "any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be attributed to a reliable, published source."

• the Wikipedia:Notability criterion, which is how we decide what are suitable subjects for articles. That is not a matter of opinion but has to be demonstrated by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." The test is, have people not connected with the subject thought it important and significant enough to write substantial comment on? See WP:ANS for how that is interpreted.

Also, in order to maintain a WP:Neutral point of view, people are strongly discouraged from writing articles about themselves. The reasons for that are explained at Wikipedia:Autobiography. Note in particular that (unlike the Myspace/Facebook type of site) a Wikipedia article is not "owned" by anyone, not its first author and least of all its subject: others can and will edit it, and you may encounter Wikipedia's Law of Unintended Consequences.
