Automatic calculations

The calculations I added for area and density are enabled if 'autocalc' is not null. It uses 'population', 'area land' (for sq. meters), 'area land km' (for sq. kilometers), and 'area land mi' (for sq. miles) to calculate density (in both sq. mi and sq. km). And it also uses 'area water', 'area water km', and 'area water mi' to calculate areas. Only one land and one water area needs to be specified. Examples:

• |autocalc=yes|area land km=1119.75|area water km=7.00|population=16745|

I tried to get it to work on your Beaufort example and I got a bunch of errors too. I think that in the future, I'll have my bot go though the 3,036 pages that transclude this template and standardize and format all the parameter names (and their values). I think that the bot is ready. What I am going to do is to edit the template to give the template better standardized parameter names (based on other templates). The bot will go through all the pages and change area to either area_total_sq_mi (if sq mi are present) or area_total_km2 (if only km² are present). It will make other similar changes. It will also go through and raw format the pop, density and area fields. This will make auto calc for all pages easily done from a central location—here. —MJCdetroit 03:44, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

I've got Detroiterbot going through the pages now. I've previewed about 50 pages and everything looks good. The formatting of the numbers will be fixed tomorrow. Sorry, I'm still a little confused. Which of these fields is mandatory? I mean, if I'm creating a new page, can't I just put in sq_mi and therefore the km2 will be filled in automatically, or vice versa?

Exactly. If there's a better way to word that then by all means please reword it.

For an example that has only English measurements see Jefferson County, New York; for a metric only example see Dallas County, Texas. However, the reality is that because of the way that the infobox was developed and has developed over time most infoboxes seem to be mixed with the areas entered in square miles and and the density per square kilometer. I was thinking that we just remove the overlapping parameters altogether. For instance, remove the English stuff from here, and the user can only input metric...then the page will display both. It probably doesn't matter, though — I'm pretty sure every US county is using this template (well, 95%+), so there probably won't be many pages where this template gets added. Actually, I found the cause of the error: the "|" was missing from this line: density_sq_mi = |. Is it possible that the BOT missed this stuff? The "good way" to do templates is to add pipes at the front of the line. This page had the pipe at the end — could this formatting style cause the error on several other pages? Courthouse Image

I'd like to propose the optional image of the County Courthouse as a variable within the template. It would serve to beautify the article and have a visual representation of the county. --Ichabod (talk) 03:05, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

I don't believe this is necessary or worthwhile, as not all counties have a good-looking courthouse. You can just add the image to the article right below the this infobox, it looks good there. Timneu22 (talk) 13:39, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

That's why it would be an optional part of the infobox. I realize many counties don't have attractive courthouses, but I believe in far many more the courthouse is almost a de facto symbol of the county itself, similar to a capitol building of a country. — Michael J 21:56, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

Louisiana and Alaska do not use counties. Calling flags "county flags" is inaccurate and a slightly irksome. I suggest changing the text to just "flag". ~~----

Map size parameter

Would it be possible to have a parameter that overrides the default map size? For counties like New Castle County, Delaware, the map is rather big, and it would be useful to be able to reduce its size. Replacing the 200px in the Image part with something like {{{map_size|200px}}} would work. Tompw (talk) (review) 11:25, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Was that map changed recently? I don't remember this issue from before. Almost all the maps fit at 200px; we decided not to allow the parameter for consistency: you could end up with Sussex County at one size and Kent County at another. Honestly, I haven't figured out why that map looks so awkward — Sussex County, New Jersey doesn't have this problem, but its state map is about the same. I'll look into it. "Founded" not applicable description for most counties

I asked about this once a while back. The term "founded" is really not applicable to most counties, which are administrative subdivisions of a state rather than settlements "founded" by some group of people. More typically counties were first "set off" while remaining attached to an existing county for administrative purposes and then at a later date county government was organized. Would it be possible to use less prescribed fields in this template, analogous to the generic "established_title" and "established_date" in {{Infobox Settlement}}? older ≠ wiser 11:57, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

I don't see a need to change the parameter, as this would require edits to all articles incorporating this template. I do agree that there's a purpose for an "established title" type thing to make the word "Founded" display as something else. Timneu22 (talk) 16:50, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Motto or Slogan

I think I would be a good idea to add a new section to the Infobox stating county's slogan or motto. For example, Miami-Dade County, Florida's slogan is Delivering Excellence Every Day It would be nice to put it in the Infobox.  iDosh!  talk? 18:16, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

I'm not sold on this one yet. This template was in use for a long time before someone said, "we need a county flag parameter". This one made sense, as many counties probably have a flag. Do alot of counties really have a motto? Is this common? Timneu22 (talk) 13:29, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

Seal Size

I have noticed that the size of the seal in these info boxes are proportionally small. In particular, the seal in Maui County, Hawaii caught my eye when I wasn't able to read the text in seal when it was in the box. Then I confirmed my suspicions in Orange County, California. The infobox implementation only allows a figure of the population density per square kilometre. I understand the reason for not entering the density per square mile as well; instead, it is automatically calculated. However, on counties with low population densities, the default behaviour of rounding the calculated value of pop/sq mi to the nearest integer results in a value of zero for this statistic (refer to Kenedy County, Texas.) Is there a way that will allow at least two significant figures in the calculated value?

Alternately, the infobox already contains entry for population and land area. How about just calculating these density figures automatically, for both sq mi and sq km, and have the code for the infobox to ignore any manual entry for either figure?

Need a bot for cleanup

I think we need a bot to do some cleanup. According to this, the following pages link to these non-existent census years:

1. Find any page that has the "census yr" parameter that is not divisble by 10 (i.e., one of the links above, and others)
2. Switch that parameter name (not value) to "census estimate yr"
3. If all the redirects listed above (and others) have zero pages pointing to them, delete the redirects.

Since the current layout, colors, font size, and appearance of Template:Infobox U.S. state is similar to Template:Infobox settlement, I would also prefer that Template:Infobox U.S. County also look sort of similar to those two. To me, it seems out of place that, for example, the appearance and colors of the infobox for Cook County, Illinois look very different than those of either Illinois or Chicago. Linking of common units

{{editprotect}} This template is causing common units such as square mile and square kilometre to be linked. This seems to me to be excessive. wp:link says:

Normally, we do not "fix" links to redirects that are not broken, especially on a template that is protected under "high-risk". Any change may not be seen on those thousands of article that use this template for several hours or days, due to the way the software caches articles (See Wikipedia:Purge#How it works). Alternate Infobox

Vermont is unique (relatively, if not absolutely) among US states in that it does not use the term county seat to identify that municipality which is the administrative center for that county. In fact, there is no county government in Vermont to speak of, except for a Superior Court and the Sheriff. Be that as it may, we call it shire town.

Thus, the use of the U.S. Counties infobox on Vermont Counties pages, forcing the use of the term "seat," is downright inaccurate.

Display issues with area

On my screen, infoboxes often display incorrectly when it comes to area because the total, land and water areas usually break over two lines (the square miles on the first line and the square kilometers on the second). There are therefore six lines in the right hand column. However, in the left hand column, the words "Total", "Land" and "Water" appear on the first three lines, meaning that the word "Land" appears next to the total area in kilometers and the word "Water" appears next to the land area in miles. This is happening when I look at Ottawa County, Ohio, for example. Is there a fix? --Lincolnite (talk) 18:21, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

I cannot reproduce this problem either, but I think I've seen something similar happen in older browsers. Request: SAME generally by county

Largest City?

I'm confused about the "largest city" parameter, both in terms of "largest" and "city". Does "largest" mean area or population? Does "city" mean "municipality" or does it only mean an actual city, say to the exclusion of a borough, town, township or village (at least where I come from in New Jersey)? And what about a place like New York State which has towns as an administrative division with villages inside of it, so that you have Hempstead in Nassau County, New York that has a population over 750,000, while all other cities are far smaller? I'm sure that in many cases the largest city is an actual city that has the most people and the largest area of any place in the county, but why not have parms for both? And why not include a value of population for most populous and a value for area for largest area, in addition to a link to the place? I left a request about nine months ago and nothing ever happened. Looking over the past years' worth of traffic on here, I get the impression that every thread which doesn't begin with {{editprotected}} is just being ignored. I didn't bother because I'm no big fan of pedantic bureaucracies, plus I've tended to regard {{editprotected}} as being for IP and/or new users. {{edit protected}} is used "to request an edit of the corresponding fully protected page", with certain conditions; since Template:Infobox U.S. county is fully-protected, {{edit protected}} would be appropriate for use by experienced registered users, as well as IPs/newbies. I suspect you're thinking of {{edit semi-protected}} which is used to request an edit that a non-autoconfirmed user cannot do. Your post at #Leader field needed? above doesn't have any specifics (so {{edit protected}} isn't appropriate for that) but appears to be more of an observation. This template talk page doesn't have many watchers, and some of those who are watching it, like myself, are just watching to see how their own posts fared, and have little or no interest in the posts of others. You might get a better response by posting at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject U.S. counties or Wikipedia talk:WikiProject United States. --Redrose64 (talk) 08:13, 9 June 2013 (UTC)

When I first left the request last year, I also checked the project talk page, only to see that it was similiarly devoid of life. When I checked back fairly recently, I noticed that this problem wasn't necessarily limited to my post, as other requests had been ignored, too. I still see a need for this, however. I assume there is also an equivalent in the borough presidents of New York City. That wouldn't apply here, since the county names redirect to the borough names, and they use {{Infobox settlement}}, but it still is evidence in my mind that counties or county-equivalents have notable leaders which should be included in an infobox. I do see the extra blank line: but all infoboxes have recently been converted to be based on Lua, and I strongly suspect that change to be the cause; unfortunately, I can't be sure, nor can I fix it, since the working of Lua templates is impenetrable (have a look at Module:Infobox). This isn't a Lua problem - this template doesn't even use {{infobox}}. There is a new line just before the code {| class="infobox geography vcard" style="width:23em;" at the top of the template. However, the {| code needs to be at the start of the line, or it will not display properly. You could fix this by using html tags like <table>, <tr>, <td> etc., or you could do the right thing and port it over to {{infobox}}. :) The {{infobox}} template also uses html tags so it would solve the problem, and it should make the code easier to read and the template faster to load. Geocoordinates: No seconds?

Why doesn't this template allow placement of seconds in the coordinates? We have degrees and minutes, but no seconds. I realize that this is small details, but it could be important. I'm not going to even pretend that I know how to add seconds to the template, so would someone familiar with this kind of stuff be able to add it, and then update the documentation? Thanks. IIRC, the decision to omit the seconds was based on WP:OPCOORD: "Generally, the larger the object being mapped, the less precise the coordinates should be". Previous consensus was that such small detail was not needed for the mapping of counties. Zzyzx11 (talk) 04:32, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

If you need more precise coordinates, I have gathered a complete list of the county coordinates here. The data is decimal degrees, down to 6 decimal places. That would translate to a fraction of a second. These are according to the U.S. Census Bureau's most recent reports. However, I do not know what criteria the Census Bureau uses to designate such a precise point, as the numbers have changed since the 2000 census, even though the geography of most counties is stable. For a handful of counties I checked, the data does not coincide with the geographic center, the county seat, or any other reasonable point. Therefore it is wiser to use a coarser unit.    → Michael J Ⓣ Ⓒ Ⓜ 06:50, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

If that point is something like the population center, it could lie anywhere in the county, including very near its border. Rounding to a coarser increment might result in a point that is actually outside the county, which would be undesirable. I don't think there's any substitute for manually looking at the minimum lat/lon span of the county, choosing a precision of approximately 1/10th that number, and then picking an approximate center point.

As far as the minutes-only, 1' is about 1600 m or 1 mi, which is appropriate precision for a county whose minimum lat or lon span is 10' (16 km; 10 mi) or larger. There are certainly some smaller counties than that. San Francisco County, California comes to mind, at 0.1 deg lat span, requiring 0.01 deg (36") or better precision. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 04:26, 21 July 2013 (UTC)

Dual time zones

Idaho County, Idaho has two time zones: Pacific north of Salmon River and Mountain south of it. Because {{Infobox U.S. county}} is locked, I created a copy of it ({{Infobox U.S. county 2TZ}} and a doc {{Infobox U.S. county 2TZ/doc}}) instead. It would probably be better just to modify this template to add the second (optional) time zone if I could get permission to edit it and the docs (or if someone else wanted to do it).

There is now code at Template:Infobox U.S. county/sandbox2 that works with testcases at Template:Infobox U.S. county/testcases2. Since the params were named differently, in order to be backward-compatible, the result actually supports three time zones.

There is one small cosmetic problem that I can't seem to solve, and that is (unfortunately) in the most common use case (see Template:Infobox U.S. county/testcases2#1 zone as TZ via 2TZ sandbox). There are a couple of extra lines present at the end of the Infobox that are coming either from the logic in the template or the {{TZ row}} transcluded template. If someone more familiar with that type of issue could have a look, I'd appreciate it. I wouldn't call it a show-stopper, though.

The code in Template:Infobox U.S. county/sandbox2 should replace the code in Template:Infobox U.S. county completely. Note that it now makes use of the new Template:Infobox U.S. county/TZ row. I don't know if you're seeing the same thing I am, but there are some issues with how it renders currently for me on Firefox 20:

1. At Template:Infobox U.S. county/testcases2 § 1 zone as TZ via 2TZ sandbox (#2) is the most common single-zone use case using my new template ({{Infobox U.S. county/sandbox2}}). Template:Infobox U.S. county/testcases2 § 1 zone as TZ via production (right below it) is the same case, using (your) production template ({{Infobox U.S. county}}). The label, zone name, and offsets are spread over four lines (there is an extra blank line between zone name and offsets) in your version. I'll note that my version has a problem with extra lines (as mentioned above). It also has the problem that it neglects to put "UTC" in front of the offsets when both the zone name and the individual offsets are mentioned, which I can go into more detail about later (it's not a simple issue, and depends on exactly how it's being used out there currently). It's been broken for a while, so it can be addressed after the merge.
2. At Template:Infobox U.S. county/testcases2 § 2 zones via 2TZ sandbox is the 2-zone test case using my template. Template:Infobox U.S. county/testcases2 § 2 zone as TZ1/2 via production is the same case using your template. There is an extra blank line between the "Time zones" label and the first zone name (Mountain...), as well as after each subsequent line (compare the spacing to the Area and Population sections above it). A minor issue is that there is just one label (less flexible) and no horizontal dividers between the zones, making it less clear to which zone the notes pertain.
3. Just to mention it, my version supported 3 time zones. While nobody has actually gone through and implemented the multi-zone feature for most counties where it applies (only 2 so far), I have a feeling that there are some border cases in the southwest that are going to need all three.

I believe I fixed the bug here. Are there still bugs? I can certainly add additional timezones, but which county has three timezones? Looking closer, thanks. I'm still seeing that "spread-out" (vertically) look in the 2-zone example, though. I've moved the two test cases to this template's sandbox at Template:Infobox U.S. county/testcases § Test case 6 and Test case 7. #7 shows the "spread-out" effect, which you can see is also happening to the Area section as well, though not as much. The distance between the horizontal lines for the Area section, encompassing four lines, is 77px. In the one produced by the new template, it is 87px. In the new template Time Zone section, 4 lines are taking 112px. (BTW, I noticed that sections with no data in them now disappear, which is nice). With regard to the three zones, as I said, it's just a feeling based on previous research, but I can't quite put my finger on it. It will be related to observance and non-observance of DST in one zone and also another zone. Heck, it might even need 4. We can certainly wait until I come across the use case. It was just a side effect of the "time zone / time zone 1" naming difference that caused me to support both of them (instead of having to use a bunch of ifs).

With regard to the time zone specifiers, there are a number of issues, though I think it now does what the old one did, which is fine I guess, but it would be nice to fix the easy ones if possible while we're at it. That is, as follows:

One issue is the failure to insert "UTC" in front of the {{{UTC offset}}} in cases 2–4 (i.e. when |time zone=a non-standard value). We need to see if such use cases have "UTC" prepended to their |UTC offset= values.

Another minor cosmetic issue is, in cases 3, 4, and possibly 1, where |DST offset= is not present, the "/" appears in the output anyway, which is ugly. This should be removed.

Another minor cosmetic issue is the use of hyphens instead of the proper "arithmetic minus" (U+2212). We should probably convert hyphens in the user-specified offsets to minuses, as well as use them in the looked-up values for the standard time zones.

Another issue is how the offsets are linked. I think they should link to the relevant article for that offset (e.g. Eastern: UTC−5/−4).

A more difficult issue is what happens in case 1, where all three params are specified. Currently, it ignores the user-specified offset(s) and just provides the normal offsets for the specified time zone. I don't know how many of the existing cases do this, and whether any of them contain offsets that are not the same as the default, and which is correct in those cases. It seems that I need to download all articles that use this template and parse them to find out.

I believe I at least partially addressed the line spacing issue. The problem with the old code was that it was using <br> tags to split the labels in the area and population sections, and then using <br> tags to split the data. This is very bad for accessibility, since a screen reader will parse the labels first, then the data, and the two will not be aligned. A side-effect of splitting these into separate table cells is that we are going to get some more vertical separation. I added a line-height parameter to reduce this separation, but it may need some adjusting. I moved the 2TZ sandbox to sandbox2 and the 2TZ testcases to testcases2 when I deleted the 2TZ template. I updated the discussion links here as well to make things less confusing. Hopefully this doesn't cause any problems. The timezone code could uses some improvements. By far the most compact way to specify timezones would be to simply give the UTC offsets, and let the template generate the text. I'm not entirely sure why we need to support complete free form input here. I would imagine we should know all the possible timezones for all the counties in the United States, and just need a switch statement to catch them all? reading Daylight saving time in the United States, it looks like we need some special timezone code for Arizona. this is handled in the timezone subtemplate by a check of |state=, but it seems that value is not passed to the template! given the special exceptions for native lands, we may want the ability to override this for some counties in Arizona? but, if we simply want to make sure we still have the functionality from before (see test case 8), we need to append |state={{{state}}} to list of parameters sent to {{infobox U.S. county/timezone}}. the Hawaii case is already handled since the only U.S. counties in that timezone do not observe DST. There are probably 10–20 counties that have special time zone cases related to DST observance and position near time zone borders. This was the use case for the 2TZ template, but nobody, (including me), got around to implementing it for those places. I think we need to see what the other hundreds of counties are doing (i.e. which params they are using and how) in order to decide what to do. If we were starting from scratch, most of them should be able to specify just a zone (Pacific, Mountain, etc.) and let the template produce the normal values. Then, there needs to be code for the exceptional cases that don't observe DST, span multiple zones, or have unusual zones (native reservations in Alaska near BC come to mind, as well as maybe island territories). Spaced hyphens should be spaced en dashes

The template generates spaced hyphens (" - "), which have no sensible typographic role, according to MOS:DASH. Probably spaced en dashes would make more sense. Hi. I learn something everyday: Flags of counties of the United States. Didn't even know there was such a thing. I also found that the template already puts a border around the county flags. The Wikipedia:Extended image syntax lets you put a border around images, but I don't see where there is a way to specify the thickness of the border. That "flag border no" seems good. I'd like to use this with "Kings County, California" as that county's flag is not quadrilateral-shaped. This one was trickier to implement than I thought it would be. I just finished making the change to this template, then I went looking for links to File:Flag of Kings County, California.png (see Special:WhatLinksHere/File:Flag of Kings County, California.png) to look for pages that might benefit from this change. I found that History of the flags of the United States#County flags uses

where the NoBorder parameter was added to {{Flag entry}} by this edit. It doesn't matter what value the NoBorder parameter is set to, just using the parameter at all turns off the border (I think). I don't know which technique is preferred, if either, or whether introducing an inconsistency in the way templates turn off image borders is a good idea. So I'll leave this open for at least another day, so that any other admins or template editors who might have an opinion can comment. Then I'll update {{Infobox settlement}} with the preferred solution so that Kings County, California is fixed for you. Can someone extend the template to include more than 3 congressional districts? This was discussed above, but it is not clear why it was not implemented. It is already included in the documentation, so I had already added several districts to Maricopa County here (Maricopa County includes all but one of Arizona's districts). So after the mess of editing this morning, the population field no longer shows up in the right place, and does not link to the Census pages. What's the purpose of the demonym field? Wouldn't everyone just be called and XYZ Countian? I'm not familiar with anyone using demonyms for counties in the same way as cities, states, or countries. Also, why does it need a type parameter? For Alaska and Louisiana, the full title including Parish/Borough is already displayed at the top. I don't see why this template needs to replicate the settlement box, since this is only being used on US county/parish/borough articles. There's no need to make it super-generic for other types of settlements. Congressional districts - Arkansas' vs Arkansas's

The proper usage is Arkansas's (due to the silent s), i.e., Arkansas's 1st congressional district. Currently, this template links to Arkansas' 1st congressional district, which is incorrect. You may want to change this:

It's actually not that important. The template only displays the district without any possessive. In fact, the articles for all states use the final s (Texas's 1st congressional district), so it doesn't really have anything to do with pronunciation. All the redirects exist to all the articles (I checked them myself a while ago). Should population be from decennial census, census estimate or both

CensusBot is changing articles for U.S. counties, replacing the decennial census data with the 2016 census estimate. The template forces a choice between the two values, by forcing a choice between the parameter "census yr" for the decennial census and "census estimate yr" for census estimate. Template:Infobox settlement allows population data to be entered for both. Given the inherent inaccuracy of the estimates, why should we be forced to choose between displaying either decennial census data or the latest census estimate, when we can make both available? As I've said in the past, "Template:Infobox U.S. county" needs to be modified to make population fields similar to "Template:Infobox settlement", in that both decennial and estimate should be 2 different fields so both can be displayed at the same time (same as "settlement" infobox used in city articles). New fields could be added to this template, then add logic to determine if old or new fields are being used. If new fields are being used ,then only use new fields, otherwise use old fields. I agree with Sbmeirow that the "Infobox settlement" template is better suited to handle this distinction today. For that template, CensusBot only adds the population_estimate numbers and leaves the decennial information alone if it's already present (the bot could also update the decennial numbers in the future, but that task only happens once every 10 years). In the absence of the new fields proposed, I would suggest displaying the population estimate. While they're not a full census count, the U.S. Census estimates incorporate births, deaths, Federal tax returns, medicare enrollment, and immigration. What does "largest city" mean?

What is the "largest city" supposed to include? As seen in this edit to the article for Cape May County, New Jersey, I have used the field to include both the largest by population and the largest by area, which may not be the same. I've included the largest by size / population for all municipalities in the county, while the other editor believes that it can only be a municipality incorporated as a city.

Sorry to tell you, whether it is specified or not, from what I've seen in all Kansas county articles, the LARGEST CITY means a city with the highest population at the last official decade census. I would say that all unincorporated communities are excluded. Though some township governments merge with city governments, I would say that if they are NOT the same, then the city name would be used instead of township name. If some type of complex merge, then would need to investigate: New Jersey state law definitions, U.S. Census boundaries of each, and U.S. Census population count of each would need to be investigated. U.S Census is the official source for all populations counts in Wikipedia. Incorporated communities are defined on page 9-6 of this document, in New Jersey the "largest city" field should only be a City, Town, Village, Borough places. When I see a form ask for city, state and ZIP Code, I put in my place of residence, which happens to be a township; I am not obligated to enter the name of a city. There is no evidence that the term "city" specified here is limited to only those places incorporated as cities. I'm not sure what "complex merge" is causing you such great anxiety, but every one of the 565 municipalities in New Jersey is incorporated as a municipality / minor civil division -- be it a city, town, borough, village or even a township -- and has its population and area tracked rather well by the United States Census Bureau. It should be an incorporated community with the largest population. The most populated place is more notable. The town with the largest land area in many counties may only have 10 people in it. I think the Census Bureau document probably made an error. There are only a handful of towns in New Jersey and most are smaller than townships. Fixed it for real, and yes, I should of course have used the 'box. Temporary lapse of judgment. I've been away for months, and am having to re-align my head a little. :-) Anyway, the feature added by the upgrade (now that it works) is |map_county=, which allows a variant county name to be specified for the map image when the WP name and the Commons name are not in agreement. Suggestion to re-write template to be based on Infobox Settlement

I got to looking and it may be possible to re-write this template to be based upon Template:Infobox Settlement, and allow this template to still maintain its unique features. It would help cut down on the redundant code between the two templates, and allow features like the display of both the decennial census and annual estimates.

For an example of a template that is based on the Settlement infobox is Template:Infobox U.S. metropolitan area. I am going to work on a draft of a rewritten U.S. county infobox written in the same manner and test it, so everyone can see how it works. @No1lakersfan: In the testcase page I can't see any information that is in the current infobox version but not in the sandbox. If that is true, then it could be switched. {{Infobox U.S. state}} also has been switched to use {{Infobox settlement}}. Census overhaul proposal

Since the 2020 census is getting closer, I would like to see the census section for the county template to get overhauled.

The downside of the current template is: 1) the "pop" field name is shared between the decade census and yearly estimate, 2) only one population count is shown, 3) there's no field for a reference.

For backwards compatibility, I propose that if old field names exist in an article then logic should use the old format, otherwise logic should use the new fields and new output format.

When given the name "Georgia", the flag template assumes the country, not the state, resulting in the flag of Georgia (country) being shown on all pages about counties in Georgia (U.S. state). city type should be changed to municipality type

In the template there is a "city type" variable used to differentiate the largest city of the county, which then shows under city. However, I think this should be renamed as "municipality type" to make it easier and simpler to understand. When we look at a county, we don't want to see the largest city or largest borough, we want to see the largest municipality. When it's selected, the variable should then show up as "Largest municipality" instead of "Largest city" in case of the county's largest municipality not being a city as is often the case in many states, especially PA and NJ. What's the problem with this template supporting the "settlement" density value of "auto"? I am new to the wikipedia ecosystem, but it seems like a wrapper should support all the features of the parent. That said, as a software engineer, I realize there are many reasons why this wouldn't automatically function; yet, this would still be a "nice" feature, especially if trivial to enable. New-Style Population fields added to documentation

This new style of population fields were added quite a while ago, but no one ever got around to documenting them. These new field names are based on similar fields in Template:Infobox settlement.

The following fields are now shown in the documentation:

I recommend all county articles be converted to this new style, because both the decennial (10-year) official census and the estimate census are displayed at the same time, along with each of their references too. If you are editing county infoboxes, please convert to these fields. Thanks!

Including Economic Information on the County

I think we should add some economic information to U.S. counties. Opportunity atlas has data on median household income in 2012-2016, median rent, as well as fraction of college graduates. They also have these variables they calculated themselves measuring opportunity, such as the median income for a child born to a low income family at the age of 35.

I propose we incorporate at least the median household income and median rent into the template, and I think including the "median income for a child born to a low income family at the age of 35" would be helpful as well. Sure, it might be a bit confusing at first, but I think it is very noteworthy information. There should probably also be a FIPS code section of the template.

I feel like since the data is already there, it should be possible to write a bot to add all of the information onto the county pages? I have never done something like that before, but I would be willing to give that a shot. AI coolTIM (talk) 01:55, 31 January 2022 (UTC)

County flower

Default type being "U.S. county"

The default type of this infobox should be "County" and not "U.S. county". The reason is that this infobox automatically adds the short description <type> in <state>, United States. However, editors clearly dislike the auto-generated description and override it with County in <state>, United States (examples: 1, 2, 3). This seems reasonable. I have removed "U.S." from the default value of |settlement_type= for the above reason and because it seems redundant. There are many other indications in this infobox that the place is in the United States, including "Location within the U.S. state of ...", "[state]'s location within the U.S.", and a prominent U.S. flag. Add census codes to info box

You list codes like Zips, Area Codes, and Congressional Districts (which may be represented by census codes). However, you do not list the Congressional Disctrict FIPS codes, nor do you list the County FIPS codes or GEOID codes. Since we live in a data world where much data across government agencies are released at a county level using census codes it only stands to reason to add them to this info box. Yes, there are county lists of FIPS codes. However, by keeping that separate, the user has to look in 2 places - the County articles for more information about the county and then find the page that lists the codes. Maybe I'm just misreading the template instructions, but it implies that you can put multiple leaders in the infobox without actually saying how to do it. For instance, if a county has a County Mayor and a Vice Mayor (or equivalent), it seems like you can only put one, in the template.
