Immigration into Leeds

An IP has commented at Talk:History of Leeds on the fact that immigration isn't mentioned, and with the rich culture of carnival, synagogues, Irish club, etc it does seem surprising that we don't seem to have anything about the centuries of immigration into Leeds. There are plenty of WP:RS though perhaps mostly print rather than online: looking at the Thoresby Society Index under "I" for Irish showed another publication about Italians in Leeds, just as a sample. I'm away from my Leeds bookshelf at the moment but I'm sure there's scope to add a section, or a new article, or a historical expansion to Demography of Leeds. (If, on the other hand, this information is already in the encyclopedia, then it needs more links to make it visible - nothing in the "Leeds" template suggests where to find it, and History of Leeds could use a short section with a {{main}} link.) Monthly collaboration suggestion: Lendal Tower

I created the article on Lendal Tower about a year ago and think it has the potential to become a higher quality article than it is now (start-class). The sources I’ve already referenced contain a lot more information and if other editors read these they'll probably find things worth adding that I’ve missed (particularly to do with the architecture as I'm not great with the terminology and technical stuff), also they may be able to make improvements relating to grammar and Manual of Style guidelines. Notable People (Richmond, North Yorkshire)

Hi there, coming out of retirement trying to tackle this article as it's my hometown, going to make an attempt to bring it up to at least a "C" class using the WP:UKGEO settlement guidelines, so I may ask for help on more than one occasion. Firstly, the list of notable people seems quite messy and exhaustive here when compared to somewhere larger like Northallerton? I'm not sure where the guidelines sit really, if they have a Wikipedia article of their own, do they warrant making it onto a list of people from the town, or do we select the most notable few? Hi Cacolantern; given the size of the notable people, have you considered spinning it off into a separate list like List of people from Middlesbrough? If they are retained, then I would expect all to be cited as having that connection to Richmond. At least all have blue links, so their inclusion is warranted, but a list like this can be quite bloated. I would probably get the list in to shape here first and then spin off as one of the last operations on the page. There needs to be work on the ODNB references several have the link on the accessdate and several have no date information whatsoever. The last one also appears to be a dead DOI link. Keith D The date and accessdate are no longer parameters of the Template:Cite ODNB. I did ask the custodian/admin/template guru who had effected the changes back in 2019 (I think), and their response as to why the url/date/accessdate parameters are not required is here. The joy of all things The template has all the parameters of {{cite encyclopedia}}. There is nothing in the link to say that |date= is not required. Richmond, North Yorkshire Review

Hello again! I think I've got as far as I'm going to get in the meantime with the Richmond article, the history section has barely been touched by myself as I'm struggling to find any 20th century events, but if anyone else fancies a go then of course, go ahead! Notable people looks great, but I didn't want to do anything drastic like split it until we had a clear consensus! I'd appreciate an independent mind to review and re-classify the article now if that's okay? Hpefully it's climed out of "start" class. I will continue working on it when I gather more notable information and reliable sources.

It's comfortably a lot better than 'start' class! After mentioning the castle as a tourist attraction, it might be worth quantifying it by saying it brings c.40,000 visitors to the town every year. For 20th century history, the Richmond Sixteen surely need a mention along with the castle's use as a prison. This podcast episode on the topic is worth a listen. Bolton Abbey

I've never understood Bolton Abbey.

I only found out earlier this year/late last year that the ruins of the church was called Bolton Priory.

And today when visiting the page to find out what the post town of Bolton Abbey was (the answer is Skipton by the way), I noticed there was a separate stub article for Bolton Abbey (village).

Apparently Bolton Abbey (village) is smaller than Bolton Abbey the estate, but there doesn't seem to be anything explaining what the boundaries of either of them are, or any maps showing the boundaries of each.

Can Bolton Abbey be renamed to Bolton Abbey Estate?

And can some info and maps be added to each article explaining the boundaries?

Weekly clean-up listing

Hello all; the Tuesday run of the cleanupworklistbot has generated an extra 62 articles this week with the tags of Harv and SFN no-target errors. I did see this sometime last year when a test was run to see what it was like and it threw up lots of issues. I think the problem lies when either some has written a cite starting with {{sfn|...|...|...}} and then not had a link in the ref section (such as at West Tanfield, where it displays the Patent Rolls with an SFN citation, but nothing in the sources or bibliography), or, when a source has more than one author and needs it ref parameter changed from |ref=harv}} to show |ref= {{harvid|author1 surname|author2 surname|year}} }}.

Is this correct, or am I just muddying the waters. Thanks and regards. PS - 26% of the articles linked to Yorkshire have some sort of problem that needs attention, if we muck in, we can sort a lot of them! Thanks. The joy of all things (talk) 18:38, 23 June 2020 (UTC)

Probably the second one of multiple authors may be because the author parameter is set out wrong and not using |last= and |last2=. Another problem could be the year in the short form & long form do not match each other.

Hi,

I've recently got back into contributing to Wikipedia and I'm looking to help out with Sheffield-related articles as that's where my knowledge is.

Is there a to-do list of Sheffield/Yorkshire pages to be created? I was going to ask on the WikiProject Sheffield Talk page but that doesn't seem to be used any more (last post was 9 years ago!). I've been tidying up a few Sheffield articles up to now but keen to have my own 'project' as well :)

Eyes on requested

For the last few weeks I have been trying to assist a determined Paid CoI who registered two days before a net 5,300 byte change (with a sizeable deletion of sourced prose) to an article based on a business, Manor Property Group.

At my request, a CoI declaration was made, confirming that the business had contracted Chelgate Local, a subsidiary of Chelgate to "to ensure the factual accuracy of its Wikipedia entry", "review the current entry, fact check and correct any factual errors", and "to add new content to create a comprehensive entry and include more up to date information on the organisation and its projects."

After considerable Talk discussion, this new editor has submitted a revised proposed change at Talk:Manor Property Group#Draft under two new subheadings. As I am the only contributor to Talk, I am requesting comments to form a consensus, and also to avoid any suggestions of WP:OWNership on my part. Until seeing this CoI contribution, I had only edited a caption, and this is my first experience of a paid contributor.

One aspect includes the development of a free App for Android and iOS; I have no experience of such software hence unable to conclude if this constitutes WP:SPAM.

Whitesnake

Hello, the Whitesnake article was tagged for the project some time ago and has recently been nominated for good article status. The article at one stage had references to Middlesbrough but there are no references to Yorkshire any more. Is there something missing from the article, as it now stands, or was the previous mentions of Middlesbrough incorrect? Anyone got any insight on this? Keith D (talk) 18:39, 26 May 2021 (UTC)

David Coverdale was/is from Saltburn and did early gigs on Teesside. That's it. It's as pointless as stating that Queen are from Zanzibar because Freddie Mercury was born and brought up there. I would expect the article on David Coverdale to be tagged for Yorkshire, but not the one about Whitesnake, who formed in London. Another example; three of the current members of Marillion are from Yorkshire: the Boro, Whitby and Donny, but they formed in Aylesbury, so again, I would not expect the Marillion article to have a Yorkshire tag. Location maps

Please can somebody create location maps for Yorkshire and the historic ridings. I don’t know we’re to start never mind getting one to be in a module page, ready to be added to an article.

I think @Dr Greg: is the one I’ve seen as the creator for Cumberland and Westmorland maps. If You’re busy would you mind, I know they must take a lot of work. If not is there anybody else able to.

Newsletter suggestion

I think the newsletter is helpful and a good reminder to keep up to date with things, but I find it can notably increase the size of my talk page. Instead of having just the Yes/No choice on it being delivered could there be an option to have the delivery of just a short message to announce when there is a new issue and with a link to the copy of it on the wikiproject. The October 2021 issue of the Project Newsletter is now available.

As my understanding of how to put this together was mostly by trial and error there may be areas that could be improved on either technically or in terms of the appearance. It contains all the information from the original message (once the MediaWiki delivery notice has been added to the end) but I removed the top section to make it non-collapsible as I think this would no longer be necessary. Stretching boundaries

Howley Hall is in Morley, the editor who wrote it doesn't want to put it Morley in the article, "between Batley and Morley", ok sort of, but he wants it in the Batley article. I had removed it but apparently it belongs there. I also removed Joseph Priestley from Batley, twice, as he was born in Birstall but the same editor has removed the notice that said only people born in Batley should be added and re-added JP as he went to school there. I always assumed Wikipedia uses modern boundaries? Is Batley so devoid of history that the article needs to adopt people and places from the surrounding area? User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Hi Lucia,, I've only just seen this. If you are planning any more of these, I'd love to come and help out, if you think I could be useful? Please let me know on my talk page, though, because I might miss this page (too much on the watchlist). The major problem that my non-wiki friends have - for some reason - is uploading their images to Commons. They all seem to give up due to "time, effort and hassle", and that includes people profient in IT. Their main complaint seems to be that the upload wizard fails at some point. So that is something that I could help them with. (there's nothing wrong with Commons or the upload wizard - people just don't seem to know exactly what info to feed it with). Hello, I’ve joined this group as a denizen of Yorkshire trying to improve my Wikimedia skills.

Using the Wikidata query service I’ve run a few queries to list various Yorkshire entities and corresponding Wikipedia URLs where they exist. Not sure how useful people will find it, but here they are:

No we don't generally include things in defunct unit categories except for things like elections etc that are directly connected with the area. Crouch, Swale (talk) 16:17, 1 April 2023 (UTC)

I think we would change the standard text of "X is in the Ryedale district, in the county of North Yorkshire, England" to "X is in the North Yorkshire district, in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England". And in the "History" section put something like "From 1974 to 2023 it was in the Ryedale district. Crouch, Swale (talk) 21:58, 18 February 2023 (UTC)

@The joy of all things: It should be Easby (near Richmond) and Easby (near Great Ayton) as theses places aren't in the settlement of administrative units. Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. If you are creating, or contributing to the content of, Yorkshire articles, you may be interested to know that I have recently uploaded images to Commons from the pages of six of W.T. Pike's Contemporary Biographies, Two of these volumes are related to Yorkshire, i.e. North and East Ridings, and West Riding. I have photographed the indexes, and photographed and uploaded some of the portraits and biographies. Six of the volumes (Durham, Kent, Northumberland, Sussex, and 2 x Yorkshire) are in my possession, so if you spot something in the indexes which may be of use to you, please let me know on my talk page, and (so long as I am available) I would be happy to photograph the content that interests you, and upload it for you.

Sorry it's all old well-off white men and their big houses - but on the other hand, I have found some items which would definitely be of interest to our rail and tram enthusiasts. Photograph request - Middlesbrough transporter bridge

Can you get a better photograph of the bridge from this angle?

At Talk:North Yorkshire#Proposals so far we are discussing the collage images for that article's infobox. One of the suggestions has been to use the image to the right. Thematically it is on point, but photographically it could be better, so if there is anyone local who could get a (or anyone who knows of a suitably licensed) higher quality image from approximately that angle that would be very useful. The image must be portrait orientation and would ideally be in better weather (the other proposed images are all taken on sunny days). Thank you. Thryduulf (talk) 22:17, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

Judging by the cycle path in the foreground, this is taken from the County Durham side, so would have to be a morning shot due to the sun's position in the later day. Where I live it is very sunny and 26-28 degrees, but on Friday the Vale of York was very misty. I naively assumed as Middlesbrough is very close to the coast, it would not be affected..... The joy of all things (talk) 20:44, 9 September 2023 (UTC)

Removing North Yorkshire districts from settlement articles

Hello! Many of the articles on places in North Yorkshire have not been updated to reflect the abolition of the county's districts in April, so if anyone fancies browsing List of civil parishes in North Yorkshire and ticking a few off that would be fab. This typically means:

• Removing the mention of the former district in the lead.
• Removing the district field from the infobox.
• Updating any other mention of the district in the body.

If you can also update the North Yorkshire Council electoral division at the same time that would be helpful.

Keighley College: photo (and article) needed

This needs an article, given that its history goes back to the Mechanics Institute of 1825 and that it seems now to be once more branded as a stand-alone college, rather than a "campus" of Park Lane College and then Leeds City College. Could someone local please take a photo showing the current branding, which seems to have happened in 2017 - see https://keighleycollege.ac.uk/keighley-college-back/ - rather than this "Keighley Campus" image. I might have a go at putting an article together (I'm amazed there wasn't even a redirect to one of the past parent colleges, can't think how I missed that when doing some work on Park Lane myself a while back, but I can't see any history of any previous page or redirect), but someone with current local knowledge could probably do it better. Yes, I've fallen down today's rabbit-hole and created a solid little stub here, with logo and out-of-date photo, adding it to a couple of templates and lists, but it needs more content. In particular if anyone has good sources for its history, and various buildings etc: in 2016 there was a campaign to save its old building from demolition: did that happen? And so on. Defunct Sheffield Companies: Stephen Toulson & Sons

Hello! I'm looking for some help with regard to identifying references to meet notability criteria for a defunct Tinsley business which was a significant contributor to big regional infrastructure projects over several decades; Stephen Toulson & Sons. My submission on the subject was recently declined as the references I have used do not show that the subject qualifies for a wikipedia article. I have tried to use newspaper articles with more significant coverage of the business. I am not aware of any books that have been published with significant coverage of the company and would appreciate any guidance or advice from more experienced users, particularly those who have contributed to the Defunct Companies category.

Note, I have also declared a COI for transparency - I am the great great grandson of the founder. The business was sold before I was born and I have no other affiliation nor stand to gain in any way.

Useless artefacts

Hello all. In the services section of the Brighouse and Normanton railway station articles there are two artefacts unnecessary for the rendering of the table in that section. The offending items are a pipe and a dash (|-). Does anyone know how to get rid of them without disturbing the adjacent tables? I for the life of me cannot work out what is going on. Thanks. Proposed county infobox template change

A discussion is ongoing at Template talk:Infobox English county#Proposal: remove the ethnicity section which is likely of interest to this project. The original proposal is for straight removal of the ethnicity field from the template; the population field would remain. This and a modified proposal would have the same effect on Yorkshire. A result of the change, if consented to, is the restriction of demographics, other than population to the local authority administrative sections of the county infoboxes. It has no effect on editors placing reliably sourced statistics in the body of the article. 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 16:12, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
