Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation COI updates

Someone working for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation has been trying to update the page to the museum's latest mission statement and brand identity, using copyrighted copy-pastes from http://www.guggenheim.org/guggenheim-foundation. After a couple copyvio warnings, they enlisted a sockpuppet or meat puppet for the same copyvio edits.

The article is probably out of date and should be updated, but with non-copyright violating text, and with third party citations. Anyone care to help? --Dennis Bratland (talk) 00:04, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Philadelphia Doll Museum

I've created an article about the Philadelphia Doll Museum, which is the only museum in the United States that emphasizes the preservation of black dolls. Reading the guideline, I didnt see anything specific which seemed *wrong*, but it's also not something I'd be overly worried about enforcing. It seems like someone's nice attempt to provide a point in time list of good ideas about making articles about museums better. I dont believe there was any consensus found when it was first written, since very very few people contributed and my comment asking whether it should be in a users sandbox rather than the project page remains effectively unanswered, except for some mild agreement from random editors who trip across this. If an editor wants to be bold and edit this draft, I dont see why they should not. dm (talk) 03:47, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

I think there might have been some earlier discussion, perhaps in the archive here? I don't think it can be enforced since not all museum articles can fit a prescribed structure so I wouldn't worry about diverting from it. StarM 01:54, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

Ataria

Would anyone here be willing to have a look-see at Ataria? It was deleted at AfD for lack of notability and was very close to a complete copyvio. I did some work on it prior to restoring it to mainspace but it's still somewhat lacking. I wondered if anyone might know of some more local sources that might not come up via Google or a good starting point? I've also posted this to the Spain WikiProject. Thanks! Commas in DAB Titles

(I'll crosspost this to WP:India, as well)) Coming from Category:Science_museums_in_India, but present elsewhere, I'm sure is a little confusion. When disambiguating between the various Science City Museums, should there be a comma before the city name? I see it both ways. I also see one instance where the city name is before "Science City" and two where it's listed after. I don't have a particular preference, but I think it should be consistent. WikiProject Conservation and Collection Care Proposal

I have recently submitted a new WikiProject proposal that ties-in very closely with WikiProject Museums. The proposed project is WikiProject Conservation and Collection Care which, if approved, will aim to create new articles, as well as to gather existing articles, concerning conservation and collection care at museums, libraries, historic locations, archives, and other relevant sites into a collaborative project. While, technically this group could be considered a subcategory of both WikiProject Museums and WikiProject Libraries, many of the relevant pages are not specific to one group or the other. For example, historic landmarks and houses are not necessarily included in either group. I am therefore writing to your group to inform you of my decision to request a seperate group, as well as to inquire if a collaboration might be an option. Given the obvious close connection between the two projects, and my own inexperience with starting a WikiProject, I am open to suggestions, collaborations, and advice from a well-established group such as your own. Image Use

I am currently editing the page for the Currier Museum of Art. I have been in contact with their librarian, who has been extremely helpful in getting information that isn't available online. However, one current issue is that, as I no longer live in the area, I can't take good pictures of the museum proper. There are not many images of this museum in the public domain and what is uploaded to Wikimedia is okay, but doesn't highlight the most interesting points of the museum. The librarian told me to use their Flickr pictures, taken by a staff member, but I know that violates a lot of policies for image upload. However, I do know there is a way to upload pictures at the request of the owner. I would like to do this, but I don't really know how or even if I can. I am fairly new and I do not have a firm grasp on how to upload images or make sure that they work. Any help would be appreciated, thank you! DebraHardy (talk) 19:38, 23 September 2012 (UTC)

Untagged museums (redux)

back to working on last year's massive list of museums that are in a museum cat but aren't tagged for the project. The initial list was a bot generated list and since then a few of us have gone through it removing things that don't belong (objects in museums, works of art, etc) and sorting the list by those that should be tagged. I figure I'll ping BOTREQ for those that definitely should be tagged - but would love some extra eyes/opinions on those that need more discussion. Thoughts? Wikipedian in Residence: Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums

Hi all,

Just to let you know that the Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums are advertising for a Wikipedian in Residence (announcement). It's a funded post, part-time through spring and early summer, based in Newcastle (so may well suit a student). Applications are open until 4th March. They're particularly interested in the prospect of someone wanting to work with the shipbuilding & industrial history collections, and digitising some of the material they have in their archives.

which infobox

I have been dabbling with some of the abbeys and have noticed that their are two distinctly different infoboxes in use, infobox historic site and monastery. Which is preferred? can there be a consensus reached on which to use? It has always bothered me when there are "inconsistecies". speednat (talk) 18:39, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

'monastery. I'd think because monastery is more specific it would be the preferred box for things that fit into its category, but then again, I wrote most of SA-500D which uses the NRHP infobox instead of the rocket infobox because elements of its history (location, dates, etc.) are more relevant than the vehicle's specs which can be found on Saturn V. ---- ke4roh (talk) 19:27, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

Image Copyright

The copyright status for images of art and/or objects from museums is proving a bit difficult for me to get my head around. I have access to a huge range of photographs from the Golden Dragon Museum I am however finding it difficult to upload these due to copyright. I sent an email to Wikimedia that had a signed letter with permission from the museum director. I haven't heard back though and I want to know the precedent from other pictures from other museums around the world. Artist articles external links

When choosing external links for bio articles, I think as many artworks as possible should be a few clicks away. Often a combination of known museums is a good choice, as they have both high quality images and intelligent databases. See what links I added at Jean Duvet, in whose case, Artcyclopedia had virtually all links broken, and Web Gallery of Art, only two works. Now I think this can be standardized by creating a template to link to the different museums databases, even thogh some links are technically to search pages. It could be collapsed like a navigation template, titled e.g. "Jean Duvet major collections". The closest thing in use now afaik is the album reviews and ratings thing. I deferred on on Feb 21. --any G13 afc should be deferred if there is any reason to think that an article is possible, especially if there's a chance someone is interested. I was uncertain whether or not it would be possible, so I deferred it as the safer course. That's fairly rare--about 80 to 90% of what's up for G13 is not conceivably likely to ever yield an article. (And, fwiw, not only can anyone at all defer a g13, anyone who would be prepared to defend the article at AfD can accept one. Certainly the topic is notable - these are a highly important set, among the most famous Chinese ceramics, that the world's top collections have divided between themselves. They are covered in detail, with pictures, in the standard surveys: Sickman L & Soper A, The Art and Architecture of China, Pelican History of Art, 3rd ed 1971, Penguin (now Yale History of Art), LOC 70-125675, pp. 200-201, and Rawson, Jessica (ed). The British Museum Book of Chinese Art, 2007 (2nd edn), British Museum Press, ISBN 9780714124469, pp. 158-160. The article may not yet make that clear, but these . But the article would be better repurposed to cover the whole set. I never know how to extract articles from the hellish AFC process. Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

the afc guideline for acceptance is deliberately nonspecific, because afc is just a preliminary screen. The accepted practice is that an article should be accepted if it has a reasonable chance of surviving AfD, and has no really gross errors. If it 's dubious, the way to decide is to accept it and nominate it for AfD--that way the community gets to decide, not the single person who happens to review. (The interpretation of "reasonable chance" varies a little--50% has been considered sufficient, but some of us, including myself, use a somewhat higher standard, of 60 to 70%. At this time, I think none of the about 500 hundred I accepted have been deleted at afd--though I have a few times had one deleted because I missed a copyvio or a duplication. I would strongly object to anyone who insists ob meeting GA, tho some people did this at first, just as I would object to someone accepting articles liable to A7. Thanks for the background DGG. I meant the technical side of it, but Revent dropped me a note after handing it his/herself. I got lost in template hell, but it's a decent article. For a museum in development, it has gotten a fair bit of attention. Eastmain, WP:ORG loosely applies here as far as I'm concerned. While things are a little loosy goosy for projects in development, this seemed a clear pass to me. Greek museuems tagged for notability

There are a large number of articles, such as Hellenic Cosmos, which have been tagged for notability for over six years. Many of these are in Category:Museums in Athens. As these don't have Greek-language articles and are hard to verify, I'm concerned that they could end up wrongly prodded. If anyone could help, please look through the category, or CAT:NN for 2008. Museum of Art - Deland

Hello,

I am an intern for the Museum of Art - Deland and have been tasked with editing the Wikipedia page to reflect the museum's new scope and additions. Right now I have access to a lot of information, both institutional and in files. The problem is properly citing it all and getting it on the page in a manner that is up to Wikipedia standards. I'm open to any suggestions and help, I'd like the page to be a reflection of bigger art museums but also reflective of the museum's small scale.

Visitor attractions and non-accredited museums in the UK

Have non-accredited museums been discussed by this project? There are a number of places that may be called a museum but are actually commercial visitor attractions. Generally speaking, these are not accredited as museums in the UK. There are also many museums which are non-accredited, often because they are small, local or new. I think this distinction should be made clear so that readers may clearly understand if a place is an attraction or a museum. One option would be to add a section about accreditation to Museum. But is this distinction clear in fact? Who is "accrediting"? The Museums Association, the main UK body, only claims 600 intstitutional members. The Arts Council scheme was only established in 1988, and claims 1,700 members (all-UK). I doubt that not being a member can really be held against institutions. Hi John, thank you for responding. You have clarified the point I had attempted to make and added some very useful statistics. There are, of course, no clear boundaries between museum, heritage attraction and visitor attraction. My specific query was about places that call themselves a museum but are better described as a visitor attraction. A good example of clarity can be found with London Dungeon, which is open and honest about being a tourist attraction rather than a museum. The attraction that inspired my query, describes itself as a museum but is better described as a visitor attraction. Which name to use, local or English-ized?

I've noticed that a lot of articles (not just museums actually) use one name in the title and another in the text or infobox. For example, Denis Diderot House of Enlightenment; the actual name of the museum is 'La Maison des Lumières Denis Diderot'. The infobox has the French name and the article has both the French name and 'House of Enlightenment, Denis Diderot'. I've seen lots of variations in other articles. It seems that the name of the museum in its home country is the name that should be used in the article, and a translation could be given in the text and/or infobox. I took another look at MOS:Article titles, and it says to use the name that predominates in English language reliable sources if possible. Otherwise, "follow the conventions of the language appropriate to the subject". So, smaller museums that are not widely written about outside of their home country would generally have local names, I guess. Leschnei (talk) 01:57, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

Sort of! The trouble is a google search will typically throw up lots of tourist guides, often locally written and poorly-translated, whereas an English name used by sources in specialist sources may be missed entirely. The size and importance of the museum is one factor, but the difficulty (for Anglophones) of the language may be another - it will be more often appropriate to use English for Hungarian museums than French or Italian ones for example - Hungarian National Museum (National Museum of Hungary redirecting), rather than Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum, and Museum of Fine Arts (Budapest) not Szépművészeti Múzeum for the main gallery of paintings (in typical Hungarian style, the Hungarian National Gallery is something else entirely). Generally I think we should lean towards English for large museums, and the local language for really small ones, unless they are very simply translated, as in "Footown Museum". The untypical Diderot name is an interesting example; I would be inclined to go for the French. Johnbod (talk) 13:48, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

There's also an issue that the common name in English isn't necessarily the name the institution themselves use in English-language materials, and even the institutions themselves can't always make up their minds what the official translation of their name is. To take a couple of high-profile examples, the Musée d'Orsay can't make up their mind whether their English-language name is "Musée d'Orsay" or "Orsay Museum", while the Hermitage Museum have spent the last century flipping between "The Hermitage", "Hermitage Museum" and "The State Hermitage Museum" (you'll find all three in both their publications and on their English-language website). Plus, as Johnbod says a Google search will be misleading, since it will bring up lots of tourist guides which generally use whatever the local name is (as they're aimed at people trying to navigate there on public transport, for whom which bus stop to get off at and which sign to look out for are the main considerations). ‑ Iridescent 14:18, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

On one hand, I could expand it with reviews of major exhibitions, but on the other, I haven't seen another museum article to have a similar section. "Glenstone" vs "Glenstone Museum"

Hi -- I'm working on the article for Glenstone, a private museum in Maryland, United States. I originally titled the article "Glenstone" but another editor recently changed it to "Glenstone Museum". The reason I originally omitted "Museum" is because in all my sources (such as this one), and in the museum's own website, I only see "Glenstone" without "Museum". I have also been modeling this article somewhat off the article for The Broad, which does not have "Museum" in its title.
