Bodak Yellow

Several(?) anonymous users have repeatedly updated Bodak Yellow over the past few days, apparently in response to social media reports that the song has gone triple platinum in the US. The RIAA source given in the article is dated Aug. 27, and still says "gold". People have repeatedly changed the Wiki article from "gold" to "platinum," but not updated the source cited. (The best I saw was someone posting Cardi B.'s instagram page as a source, which doesn't seem good enough.)

I googled a bit and didn't find anything that looked credible enough to use as a source. I think I'm also done caring about this minor issue, but it bothers me that the page essentially contains a rumor not supported by its citation at this point. Anyone else feel like dealing with this? Thank you. Jessicapierce (talk) 17:22, 18 November 2017 (UTC)

Disambiguation links on pages tagged by this wikiproject

Wikipedia has many thousands of wikilinks which point to disambiguation pages. It would be useful to readers if these links directed them to the specific pages of interest, rather than making them search through a list. Members of WikiProject Disambiguation have been working on this and the total number is now below 20,000 for the first time. Some of these links require specialist knowledge of the topics concerned and therefore it would be great if you could help in your area of expertise.

A list of the relevant links on pages which fall within the remit of this wikiproject can be found at http://69.142.160.183/~dispenser/cgi-bin/topic_points.py?banner=WikiProject_Hip_hop

Please take a few minutes to help make these more useful to our readers.— Rod talk 15:54, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:41, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Help needed to improve Dapper Dan (tailor)

I just created Dapper Dan (tailor) upon discovering the subject of the article. First, I can't believe he didn't have one already, so I created the bare bones of an article beyond stub point, but would like help expanding it so it can either reach Good Article status or Featured Article status. I don't care about promoting articles I've created, but I feel this subject is overdue for his place in the spotlight. I've sourced the hell out of it and there is a lot more than can be included from the content of the articles on him (the ref list is about one-third of the article length) and there are hopefully people more knowledgeable than I am who are interested in helping. So I'm reaching out to related WikiProjects, and I particularly need help integrating the article into Wikipedia with appropriate links into other articles. I'm also hoping to find copyright-free photos of either him, his store, or people wearing his clothes that can be used in the article. Thank you! МандичкаYO 😜 02:48, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

MC Pitman

I'm wondering if someone from WP:HH could take a look at this and assess it for notability. I came across the article becuase someone started a discussion at WP:BLPN#MC Pitman about it. The article has been around for awhile, but has pretty much been unsourced the enitre time. I tried to do a bit of WP:BEFORE, but I'm not finding any WP:SIGCOV in WP:RS which might show how he meets WP:BAND or even WP:BIO. Someone posted on the article's talk page that the subject is Wikipedia notable, but none of those things are really relevant to determining notability and the BBC article mentioned is more of an PR fluff type interview than critical coverage in a reliable source. Anyway, I'd figured I'd check here before starting an AfD just in case some is able to find any WP:NEXIST type of coverage. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:36, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

Article Soul Intent (group) was deleted

The article about Eminem's first band (Soul Intent) was deleted today. It was proposed for deletion eight days ago. Two users supported its deletion. One was the author of the deletion request. He has been involved in several publishing wars on the article in recent months. The other is a user who is mainly active on articles related to rock music. See here: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Soul Intent (group) .

As for me, I am not very involved on wikipedia in English because I'm not very comfortable with written English. I missed the deletion request and will neither introduce a Deletion review nor recreate and improve the article. However, I think this article was encyclopedic, notable and correctly sourced.Fleet ch (talk) 17:12, 28 April 2019 (UTC)

High Focus Records

Hi,

Any British hip hop fans in here? I created an article on High Focus Records which has been moved to the draft space. Another editor stated it doesn't have enough reputable sources and suggested they may not be notable either.

I feel strongly this is not the case. For those of you who don't know they are, High Focus are an established record label with a UK top 40 album from Ocean Wisdom, five notable members with their own established wiki pages, publicised television theme tune work and two album releases from the global Number 1 selling Rag'n'Bone Man.

Would anyone be willing to help me out with getting it published?

Thanks!

The Flying Spaghetti Monster! 14:03, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

Update: It's been published now, but if anyone wants to help expand it that would still be welcome. Although, sourcing may remain a problem.

Thanks!

As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Juice Wrld GAN

I got a reviewer for this last month, but they abandoned it due to IRL complications, and while I admit I have not been on much and made only one other edit in the last week, I was wondering if anyone was interested in helping me finish this review before the year is over. (I had exams to do for school)

I also have a question on a bunch of the original reviewer's comments - does MOS:QWQ really apply to ref titles? I thought those were to be added literally how the publication put it. I don't see anything saying that is a necessary part of being a GA. Maybe FA, but I think that's an excessive request for the green marker.

Edits for review please

I saw some recent edits on rap but I fear that some of them may be crap. This IP now has a one-year block and it smells like a suspected sock. An expert look at their work wouldn't hurt as some of them may need a quick revert. I'd be grateful if someone could cast an eye and restore what's lost or just DENY. Jonny Shipes

Hi. I submitted Draft:Jonny Shipes for review more than two months ago as a conflict of interest editor. (He's a friend of a friend.) It needs a history merge -- an editor submitted an article on Shipes that was hypey, unreferenced, and inappropriate in 2016 (and kept removing the decline templates) and Shipes was eventually created as a redirect to his label, Cinematic Music Group. He signed Nipsey Hussle, Joey Bada$$, Sean Kingston, Big K.R.I.T and others and there are a ton of references. Thanks. JSFarman2 (talk) 20:52, 20 April 2021 (UTC)

Please Help With The Six Elements of the Hip Hop Movement / Help Rebuild The Hip Hop Movement Page

There was a small article piece in Hip Hop that had been there for 6 years and a picture of former Zulu Nation Member Ron "Bee-Stinger" Savage who coin the term Six Elements Of The Hip Hop Movement all this info came out after the alleged story in 2016. Hip Hop Pioneer Busy Bee publicly confirmed the Six Elements of the Hip Hop Movement, as well Ronald Savage -aka-Bee-Stinger is the registered owner of the trademark/service mark Hip Hop Movement which is listed it also states the Six elements of the Hip Hop Movement. This one user came along after 6 years and deleted this small piece that stated:

"In 1990, while working with the rap pop group Snap!, Ronald "Bee-Stinger" Savage carved the term six elements of the hip hop movement. These six elements are: consciousness awareness, civil rights awareness, activism awareness, justice, political awareness, community awareness."

along with it's refs: Even had the Credible Book Author Eric Reese who wrote 51 books already. you can go on the internet and clearly see the Six Elements of the Hip Hop Movement, even Jay Z made ref's in an interview to it which is one of my refs,

These are the ref's and only 1 person PIOTR JR came long and said it doesn't belong in the lead, Then Robjwev stated He will put it back and He will leave it in place and PIOTR JR told him NO don't put it back it should have been deleted a long time ago and then PIOTR went over and just put hip hop movement up for deletion and used both his names isento is his redirect name to do it. He went to Ronald Savage page and started just deleting things without even looking at the refs, who I had to blow him up because he said this stuff was not in the daily news and the records he made were only on Amazon After I PROVIDED HIM WRONG about everything he said I put it back and he was like oh he didn't see it. This all seems personal and i think it's vaandalisms, I even was thinking maybe PIOTR knows this Ron "Bee-Stinger" Savage guy or maybe PIOTR may be from the Zulu Nation whatever it is for someone to go that hard on 1 man 3 pages is kinda strange and use both your names so it can look like more people.

So i wrote the Six Elements of Hip Hop over and added a little to it with the same refs, and it's funny how after i rewrote it PIOTR has not said a word only one person again, it makes me think is that PIOTR as well, it's only that one person that said something about the new one MrOllie:

In 1990, Ron "Bee-Stinger" Savage, a former member of the Zulu Nation, (Savage is known as the son of the Hip Hop Movement) while working with the hip hop group Snap is credited with coining the term "Six Elements of the Hip Hop Movement" being inspired by Public Enemy's rap conscious style recordings. In 2017 The Chief Rocker Busy Bee stated “Hip Hop Movement is a term that has been used throughout the past for several decades but it has never been used in an official capacity. Through our efforts, the term and its language will have new meaning" Busy Bee and Ron “Bee-Stinger” Savage that hip hop movement is trademarked now as well as the logo so this is going to be new to them as well as everyone else after so long of hip hop movement not having legal meaning and ownership. Busy Bee and Bee-Stinger stated "that Hip Hop and Rap are two different things and when artist are recording and talking about shooting guns, disrespecting women, and selling drugs in there records that is not a part of the hip hop movement or hip hop". The official “Six Elements of the Hip Hop Movement" are: Consciousness Awareness, Civil Rights Awareness, Activism Awareness, Justice, Political Awareness, and Community Awareness in music.

Want to see what you all think of the two different ones and you have the refs as well, I wanted to put it back at the end of the lead as it has been there the last 6 years and 11 refs. Street sting (talk) 02:22, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

———————————————————————————————————————————————→ I need advice on the draft hip hop movement page

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Hip_Hop_Movement

in the section - The Movement Was About The DJ's In The Early Days of The '70s of The Hip Hop Movement

I'm writing about three old school DJ's that helped build a movement in hip hop which everyone in hip hop knows these 3 DJ's, how long should I make the sentences of each DJ, and after I'm done with that in the same section is it a good idea to write something these or make a new section, what I'm trying to do is how this movement went from back in the days started with the DJ's who were the ones bring in the people to hear them chop up the records making everyone come to the jams to dance, and building it up to what it is today with the civil rights movement are intertwine with rap lyrics and rappers involved in politics and civil rights making the hip hop movement the new civil rights movement through rapping and having its own elements. because we all know hip hop culture and hip hop movement are two different things. Hip Hop Culture is something you live and the hip hop movement has become the new civil rights movement through rapping politically in your lyrics to make a change in the world like MC Common, Public Enemy, and so on.

Asian American hip hop

Is there a particular MOS that I should follow for Asian American hip hop? I'm not really sure if the page is intended for hip hop music or culture, but as of now, it's just a loose collection of summaries of notable Asian American hip hop artists. Saying that it's a musical genre seems kind of iffy because there is no throughline outside of their ethnic background (unless there is and I haven't found the right source yet) — BriefEdits (talk) 18:00, 4 March 2022 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Help Bringing a Page on the Awesome II to Community Standards

Hi Folks. Excited to have found this project. I recently wrote a book on the history of rap radio in New York (Duke UP, Fall 2022) based on my ph.d dissertation (Yale, 2019), and I'd like to publish a Wikipedia entry on two individuals who were critical in the early history of hip hop, the Awesome II. The Awesome II have hosted the longest running radio program in hip-hop history (1981-Present), and were instrumental in spreading the genre in and beyond NYC. I've submitted an article (now under request for undeletion) 3 times, only to be told that my research doesn't count as sufficient, and that my primary sources don't meet Wikipedia's criteria. This has been frustrating. The last time I asked why, I did not receive a response. I'm hoping that asking for clarification in this project will help me get this article up to publication standards. It's hard to overstate just how much the Awesome II contributed to hip hop.

I've pasted the question I previously posted before for reference:

"I'm asking for clarification as to why a submission (Awesome Two) isn't meeting the requirement for notability, and help getting it up to standard. I've included citations from numerous contemporary sources (Billboard, Village Voice, Vibe, and Black Radio Exclusive) that are more than passing mentions, as well as evidence of historical import from coverage in histories, documentaries, and mentions references in song lyrics and on album covers (should satisfy this criterion: 1.) Is frequently covered in publications devoted to a notable music sub-culture).

As producers, the duo has sufficient production credits in their name to satisfy these criteria, "Has composed a number of notable melodies, tunes or standards used in a notable music genre; The recording was in rotation nationally by a major radio or music television network."

Please advise on the status of these sources, and ways I can adjust the article to meet Wikipedia's standards.

One further question about sources: I wrote my Ph.D dissertation on the history of rap radio, and interviewed the Awesome II and their peers numerous times. I wrote a long chapter about their career and influence. I was told that my Ph.D dissertation does not count as a source (though this is Wikipedia's stance on the matter: Completed dissertations or theses written as part of the requirements for a PhD, and which are publicly available, are considered publications by scholars and are routinely cited in footnotes. They have been vetted by the scholarly community; most are available via interlibrary loan or from Proquest), and so removed the citation. I currently have a book on this history of rap radio in contract with Duke University Press with a full chapter devoted to the Awesome II. Do forthcoming works count as sources?

The Awesome II have made incalculable contribution to hip hop music. Please help me meet this communities guidelines." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jfklaess (talkcontribs) 20:53, 27 August 2021 (UTC)
